| 2011 | Metamaterial-Inspired Engineering of AntennasabstractA variety of antennas have been engineered with metamaterials (MTMs) and metamaterial-inspired constructs to improve their performance characteristics. Examples include electrically small, near-field resonant parasitic (NFRP) antennas that require no matching network and have high radiation efficiencies. Experimental verification of their predicted behaviors has been obtained. Recent developments with this NFRP electrically small paradigm will be reviewed. They include considerations of increased bandwidths, as well as multiband and multifunctional extensions. Richard W. Ziolkowski, Chia-Ching Lin |

| 2005 | Time-to-Collision Estimation from Motion Based on Primate Visual ProcessingabstractA population coded algorithm, built on established models of motion processing in the primate visual system, computes the time-to-collision of a mobile robot to real-world environmental objects from video imagery. A set of four transformations starts with motion energy, a spatiotemporal frequency based computation of motion features. The following processing stages extract image velocity features similar to, but distinct from, optic flow; "translation" features, which account for velocity errors including those resulting from the aperture problem; and finally, estimate the time-to-collision. Biologically motivated population coding distinguishes this approach from previous methods based on optic flow. A comparison of the population coded approach with the popular optic flow algorithm of Lucas and Kanade against three types of approaching objects shows that the proposed method produces more robust time-to-collision information from a real world input stimulus in the presence of the aperture problem and other noise sources. The improved performance comes with increased computational cost, which would ideally be mitigated by special purpose hardware architectures. John M. Galbraith, Garrett T. Kenyon, Richard W. | 2005 | Resolution Enhancement of Multilook Imagery for the Multispectral Thermal ImagerabstractThis paper studies the feasibility of enhancing the spatial resolution of multilook Multispectral Thermal Imager (MTI) imagery using an iterative resolution enhancement algorithm known as Projection Onto Convex Sets (POCS). A multiangle satellite image modeling tool is implemented, and simulated multilook MTI imagery is formed to test the resolution enhancement algorithm. Experiments are done to determine the optimal configuration and number of multiangle low-resolution images needed for a quantitative improvement in the spatial resolution of the high-resolution estimate. The issues of atmospheric path radiance and directional reflectance variations are explored to determine their effect on the resolution enhancement performance. Amy E. | 1991 | Localized wave representations of acoustic and electromagnetic radiationabstractNovel space-time solutions to general classes of wave equations and their properties are reviewed. The localized-wave (LW) solutions, in contrast to their continuous-wave (CW) or monochromatic counterparts, exhibit enhanced localization and energy fluence characteristics. This has led to the analysis and construction of pulse-driven, independently addressable arrays to investigate nonstandard methods of wave energy transmission based upon these LW solutions. Such arrays allow different signals to be transmitted from different locations in the array, thus allowing shading of the spectral features as well as the amplitudes seen by the array. It has been shown experimentally that the beams transmitted by these LW pulse-driven arrays outperform conventional CW driven arrays.> Richard W. Ziolkowski, Ioannis M. Besieris, Amr M. Shaarawi |
