2025 Novel Digital Biomarkers for Fine Motor Skills Assessment in Psoriatic Arthritis: The DaktylAct Touch-Based Serious Game Approach
abstract
Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) is a chronic, inflammatory disease affecting joints, substantially impacting patients' quality of life, with European guidelines for managing PsA emphasizing the importance of assessing hand function. Here, we present a set of novel digital biomarkers (dBMs) derived from a touchscreen-based serious game approach, DaktylAct, intended as a proxy, gamified, objective assessment of hand impairment, with emphasis on fine motor skills, caused by PsA. This is achieved by its design, where the user controls a cannon to aim at and hit targets using two finger pinch-in/out and wrist rotation gestures. In-game metrics (targets hit and score) and statistical features (mean, standard deviation) of gameplay actions (duration of gestures, applied pressure, and wrist rotation angle) produced during gameplay serve as informative dBMs. DaktylAct was tested on a cohort comprising 16 clinically verified PsA patients and nine healthy controls (HC). Correlation analysis demonstrated a positive correlation between average pinch-in duration and disease activity (DA) and a negative correlation between standard deviation of applied pressure during wrist rotation and joint inflammation. Logistic regression models achieved 83% and 91% classification performance discriminating HC from PsA patients with low DA (LDA) and PsA patients with and without joint inflammation, respectively. Results presented here are promising and create a proof-of-concept, paving the way for further validation in larger cohorts.

2021 AIoTES: Setting the principles for semantic interoperable and modern IoT-enabled reference architecture for Active and Healthy Ageing ecosystems
abstract
The average life expectancy of the world’s population is increasing and the healthcare systems sooner than later will be compromised by its reduced capacity and its highly economic cost; in addition, the age distribution of the population is leading towards the older spectrum. This trend will lead to immeasurable and unexpected economic problems and social changes. In order to face up this challenge and complex economic and social problem, it is necessary to rely on the appropriate digital tools and technological infrastructures for ensuring that the elderly are properly cared in their everyday living environments and they can live independently for longer. This article presents ACTIVAGE IoT Ecosystem Suite (AIoTES), a concrete reference architecture and its implementation process that addresses these issues and that was designed within the first European Large Scale Pilot, ACTIVAGE, a H2020 funded project by the European Commission with the objective of creating sustainable ecosystems for Active and Healthy Ageing (AHA) based on Internet of Things and big data technologies. AIoTES offers platform level semantic interoperability, with security and privacy, as well as Big Data and Ecosystem tools. AIoTES enables and promotes the creation, exchange and adoption of cross-platform services and applications for AHA. The number of existing AHA services and solutions are quite large, especially when state-of-the-art technology is introduced, however a concrete architecture such as AIoTES gains more importance and relevance by providing a vision for establishing a complete ecosystem, that looks for supporting a larger variety of AHA services, rather than claiming to be a unique solution for all the AHA domain problems. AIoTES has been successfully validated by testing all of its components, individually, integrated, and in real-world environments with 4345 direct users. Each validation is contextualized in 11 Deployment Sites (DS) with 13 Validation Scenarios covering the heterogeneity of the AHA-IoT needs. These results also show a clear path for improvement, as well as the importance for standardization efforts in the ever-evolving AHA-IoT domain.

2016 The Tomaco Hybrid Matching Framework for SAWSDL Semantic Web Services
abstract
This work aims to advance Web Service retrieval, also known as Matching, in two directions. First, it introduces a matching algorithm for SAWSDL, which adapts and extends known concepts with novel strategies. Effective logic-based and syntactic strategies are introduced and combined in a novel hybrid strategy, targeting an envisioned well-defined, real-world scenario for matching. The algorithm is evaluated in a universal environment for matching algorithms, SME2, in an objective, reproducible manner. Evaluation ranks Tomaco high amongst state of the art, especially for early recall levels (first in macro-averaging precision, up to 0.7 recall). Secondly, this work introduces the Tomaco web application, which aims to promote wide-spread adoption of Semantic Web Services while targeting the lack of user-friendly applications in this field, by integrating a variety of configurable matching algorithms proposed in this paper. It, finally, allows discovery of both existing and user-contributed service collections and ontologies, serving also as a service registry.

2015 Supporting Cognitive Skills of People Suffering from Dementia through a Sensor-Based System
abstract
Cognitive Rehabilitation aims to enable people with cognitive impairments to optimize their cognitive functioning in the everyday context, in order to prevent or reduce excess disability, and thus improve quality of life and well-being. This paper presents the main elements of a sensor-based system to support cognitive skills of people suffering from Alzheimer disease (AD) and dementia. The system monitors the patients at their homes during the performance of daily activities. Different types of sensors are used for monitoring the patients, while a graphical user interface a) enables the clinicians to access and visualize the results and b) supports the patients through specific interventions. The sensor data is semantically integrated and analyzed using knowledge-driven interpretation techniques based on Semantic Web technologies. Overall, this paper presents a) the system, b) cognitive rehabilitation scenarios and c) the relevant evaluation methods.

2010 3-D Model Search and Retrieval From Range Images Using Salient Features
abstract
This paper presents a novel framework for partial matching and retrieval of 3-D models based on a query-by-range-image approach. Initially, salient features are extracted for both the query range image and the 3-D target model. The concept behind the proposed algorithm is that, for a 3-D object and a corresponding query range image, there should be a virtual camera with such intrinsic and extrinsic parameters that would generate an optimum range image, in terms of minimizing an error function that takes into account the salient features of the objects, when compared to other parameter sets or other target 3-D models. In the context of the developed framework, a novel method is also proposed to hierarchically search in the parameter space for the optimum solution. Experimental results illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach even in the presence of noise or occlusion.
