Efficient Distance Sensitivity Oracles for Real-World Graph DataabstractA distance sensitivity oracle is a data structure answering queries that ask the shortest distance from a node to another in a network expecting node/edge failures. It has been mainly studied in theory literature, but all the existing oracles for a directed graph suffer from prohibitive preprocessing time and space. Motivated by this, we develop two practical distance sensitivity oracles for directed graphs as variants of Transit Node Routing. The first oracle consists of a novel fault-tolerant index structure, which is used to construct a solution path and to detect and localize the impact of network failures, and an efficient query algorithm for it. The second oracle is made by applying the A* heuristics to the first oracle, which exploits lower bound distances to effectively reduce search space. In addition, we propose additional speed-up techniques to make our oracles faster with a slight loss of accuracy. We conduct extensive experiments with real-life datasets, which demonstrate that our oracles greatly outperform all of competitors in most cases. To the best of our knowledge, our oracles are the first distance sensitivity oracles that handle real-world graph data with million-level nodes. Jong-Ryul Lee, Chin-Wan Chung

Enumerating Trillion Subgraphs On Distributed SystemsabstractHow can we find patterns from an enormous graph with billions of vertices and edges? The subgraph enumeration, which is to find patterns from a graph, is an important task for graph data analysis with many applications, including analyzing the social network evolution, measuring the significance of motifs in biological networks, observing the dynamics of Internet, and so on. Especially, the triangle enumeration, a special case of the subgraph enumeration, where the pattern is a triangle, has many applications such as identifying suspicious users in social networks, detecting web spams, and finding communities. However, recent networks are so large that most of the previous algorithms fail to process them. Recently, several MapReduce algorithms have been proposed to address such large networks; however, they suffer from the massive shuffled data resulting in a very long processing time. In this article, we propose scalable methods for enumerating trillion subgraphs on distributed systems. We first propose PTE ( Pre-partitioned Triangle Enumeration ), a new distributed algorithm for enumerating triangles in enormous graphs by resolving the structural inefficiency of the previous MapReduce algorithms. PTE enumerates trillions of triangles in a billion scale graph by decreasing three factors: the amount of shuffled data, total work, and network read. We also propose PSE ( Pre-partitioned Subgraph Enumeration ), a generalized version of PTE for enumerating subgraphs that match an arbitrary query graph. Experimental results show that PTE provides 79 times faster performance than recent distributed algorithms on real-world graphs, and succeeds in enumerating more than 3 trillion triangles on the ClueWeb12 graph with 6.3 billion vertices and 72 billion edges. Furthermore, PSE successfully enumerates 265 trillion clique subgraphs with 4 vertices from a subdomain hyperlink network, showing 47 times faster performance than the state of the art distributed subgraph enumeration algorithm. | 2015 | A Large-Scale Study of User Image Search Behavior on the WebabstractIn this study, we analyze user image search behavior from a large-scale Yahoo! Image Search query log, based on the hypothesis that behavior is dependent on query type. We categorize queries using two orthogonal taxonomies (subject-based and facet-based) and identify important query types at the intersection of these taxonomies. We study user search behavior on a large-scale set of search sessions for each query type, examining characteristics of sessions, query reformulation patterns, click patterns, and page view patterns. We identify important behavioral differences across query types, in particular showing that some query types are more exploratory, while others correspond to focused search. We also supplement our study with a survey to link the behavioral differences to users' intent. Our findings shed light on the importance of considering query categories to better understand user behavior on image search platforms. | 2015 | Nearest neighborhood search in spatial databasesabstractThis paper proposes a group version of the nearest neighbor (NN) query, called the nearest neighborhood (NNH) query, which aims to find the nearest group of points, instead of one nearest point. Given a set O of points, a query point q, and a ρ-radius circle C, the NNH query returns the nearest placement of C to q such that there are at least k points enclosed by C. We present a fast algorithm for processing the NNH query based on the incremental retrieval of nearest neighbors using the R-tree structure on O. Our solution includes several techniques, to efficiently maintain sets of retrieved nearest points and identify their validities in terms of the closeness constraint of their points. These techniques are devised from the unique characteristics of the NNH search problem. As a side product, we solve a new geometric problem, called the nearest enclosing circle (NEC) problem, which is of independent interest. We present a linear expected-time algorithm solving the NEC problem using the properties of the NEC similar to those of the smallest enclosing circle. We provide extensive experimental results, which show that our techniques can significantly improve the query performance. Dong-Wan Choi, Chin-Wan Chung

Finding a Friendly Community in Social Networks Considering Bad RelationshipsabstractCommunity detection in social networks is one of the most active problems with lots of applications. Most of the existing works on the problem have focused on detecting the community considering only the closeness between community members. In the real world, however, it is also important to consider bad relationships between members. In this paper, we propose a new variant of the community detection problem, called friendly community search. In the proposed problem, for a given graph, we aim to not only find a densely connected subgraph that contains a given set of query nodes but also minimizes the number of nodes involved in bad relationships in the subgraph. We prove that is Non-deterministic Polynomial-time hard (NP-hard), and develop two novel algorithms, called Greedy and SteinerSwap that return the near optimal solutions. Experimental results show that two proposed algorithms outperform the algorithm adapted from an existing algorithm for the optimal quasi-clique problem. Dong-Wan Choi, Chin-Wan Chung

A Query Approach for Influence Maximization on Specific Users in Social NetworksabstractInfluence maximization is introduced to maximize the profit of viral marketing in social networks. The weakness of influence maximization is that it does not distinguish specific users from others, even if some items can be only useful for the specific users. For such items, it is a better strategy to focus on maximizing the influence on the specific users. In this paper, we formulate an influence maximization problem as query processing to distinguish specific users from others. We show that the query processing problem is NP-hard and its objective function is submodular. We propose an expectation model for the value of the objective function and a fast greedy-based approximation method using the expectation model. For the expectation model, we investigate a relationship of paths between users. For the greedy method, we work out an efficient incremental updating of the marginal gain to our objective function. We conduct experiments to evaluate the proposed method with real-life datasets, and compare the results with those of existing methods that are adapted to the problem. From our experimental results, the proposed method is at least an order of magnitude faster than the existing methods in most cases while achieving high accuracy. Jong-Ryul Lee, Chin-Wan Chung

Efficient Iceberg Query Processing in Sensor NetworksabstractThe iceberg query finds data whose aggregate values exceed a pre-specified threshold. To process an iceberg query in sensor networks, all sensor data have to be aggregated and then sensor data whose aggregate values are smaller than the threshold are eliminated. Whether a certain sensor datum is in the query result depends on the other sensor data values. Since sensor nodes are distributed, communications between sensor nodes are required to know the sensor data from the other sensor nodes. However, sensor nodes have limited energy resources and communication is a primary source of the energy consumption. Thus, reducing the communication overhead is the most critical issue in sensor networks. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient iceberg query processing technique in sensor networks. To compactly represent the data transmitted, a lossless sensor data compression method based on the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic is devised. To reduce the energy consumption caused by the number of data transmitted, a filtering-based query processing method is devised. Using the temporal correlation of sensor data and the semantics of an iceberg query, a prediction model is proposed. Based on the predicted future query result, sensor nodes effectively filter out unnecessary transmissions. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our approach. | 2014 | SEDRIS Transmittal Storing and Retrieval System using Relational DatabasesabstractModeling and simulation (M&S) are widely used for design, analysis, and optimization of complex systems and natural phenomena in various areas such as the defense industry and the weather system. In many cases, the environment is a key part of complex systems and natural phenomena. It includes physical aspects of the real world which provide the context for a specific simulation. Recently, several simulation systems are integrated to work together when they have needs for exchanging information. Interoperability of heterogeneous simulations depends heavily on sharing complex environmental data in a consistent and complete manner. SEDRIS (Synthetic Environmental Data Representation and Interchange Specification) is an ISO standard for representation and interchange of environmental data and widely adopted in M&S area. As the size of the simulation increases, the size of the environmental data which should be exchanged between simulations increases. Therefore, an efficient management of the environmental data is very important. In this paper, the authors propose storing and retrieval methods of SEDRIS transmittals using a relational database system in order to be able to retrieve data efficiently in the environmental data server cooperating with many heterogeneous distributed simulations. By analyzing the structure and the content of SEDRIS transmittals, relational database schemas are designed. To reduce query processing time of SEDRIS transmittals, direct storing and retrieval methods which do not require the type conversion of SEDRIS transmittals are proposed. Experimental analyses are conducted to show the efficiency of the proposed approach. The results confirm that the proposed approach greatly reduces the storing time and retrieval time compared to comparison approaches. Yongkwon Kim, Heejung Yang, Chin-Wan Chung

Compression Schemes with Data Reordering for Ordered DataabstractAlthough there have been many compression schemes for reducing data effectively, most schemes do not consider the reordering of data. In the case of unordered data, if the users change the data order in a given data set, the compression ratio may be improved compared to the original compression before reordering data. However, in the case of ordered data, the users need a mapping table that maps the original position to the changed position in order to recover the original order. Therefore, reordering ordered data may be disadvantageous in terms of space. In this paper, the authors consider two compression schemes, run-length encoding and bucketing scheme as bases for showing the impact of data reordering in compression schemes. Also, the authors propose various optimization techniques related to data reordering. Finally, the authors show that the compression schemes with data reordering are better than the original compression schemes in terms of the compression ratio. Chun-Hee Lee, Chin-Wan Chung

Range Aggregation With Set SelectionabstractIn the classic range aggregation problem, we have a set S of objects such that, given an interval I, a query counts how many objects of S are covered by I. Besides COUNT, the problem can also be defined with other aggregate functions, e.g., SUM, MIN, MAX and AVERAGE. This paper studies a novel variant of range aggregation, where an object can belong to multiple sets. A query (at runtime) picks any two sets, and aggregates on their intersection. More formally, let S1,...,Smbe m sets of objects. Given distinct set ids i, j and an interval I, a query reports how many objects in Si∩ Sjare covered by I. We call this problem range aggregation with set selection (RASS). Its hardness lies in that the pair (i, j) can have (2m) choices, rendering effective indexing a non-trivial task. 2 The RASS problem can also be defined with other aggregate functions, and generalized so that a query chooses more than 2 sets. We develop a system called RASS to power this type of queries. Our system has excellent efficiency in both theory and practice. Theoretically, it consumes linear space, and achieves nearly-optimal query time. Practically, it outperforms existing solutions on real datasets by a factor up to an order of magnitude. The paper also features a rigorous theoretical analysis on the hardness of the RASS problem, which reveals invaluable insight into its characteristics. | 2014 | Maximizing Range Sum in External MemoryabstractThis article studies the MaxRS problem in spatial databases. Given a set O of weighted points and a rectangle r of a given size, the goal of the MaxRS problem is to find a location of r such that the sum of the weights of all the points covered by r is maximized. This problem is useful in many location-based services such as finding the best place for a new franchise store with a limited delivery range and finding the hotspot with the largest number of nearby attractions for a tourist with a limited reachable range. However, the problem has been studied mainly in the theoretical perspective, particularly in computational geometry. The existing algorithms from the computational geometry community are in-memory algorithms that do not guarantee the scalability. In this article, we propose a scalable external-memory algorithm ( ExactMaxRS ) for the MaxRS problem that is optimal in terms of the I/O complexity. In addition, we propose an approximation algorithm ( ApproxMaxCRS ) for the MaxCRS problem that is a circle version of the MaxRS problem. We prove the correctness and optimality of the ExactMaxRS algorithm along with the approximation bound of the ApproxMaxCRS algorithm. Furthermore, motivated by the fact that all the existing solutions simply assume that there is no tied area for the best location, we extend the MaxRS problem to a more fundamental problem, namely AllMaxRS , so that all the locations with the same best score can be retrieved. We first prove that the AllMaxRS problem cannot be trivially solved by applying the techniques for the MaxRS problem. Then we propose an output-sensitive external-memory algorithm ( TwoPhaseMaxRS ) that gives the exact solution for the AllMaxRS problem through two phases. Also, we prove both the soundness and completeness of the result returned from TwoPhaseMaxRS. From extensive experimental results, we show that ExactMaxRS and ApproxMaxCRS are several orders of magnitude faster than methods adapted from existing algorithms, the approximation bound in practice is much better than the theoretical bound of ApproxMaxCRS, and TwoPhaseMaxRS is not only much faster but also more robust than the straightforward extension of ExactMaxRS. | 2014 | I/O-Efficient Algorithms on Triangle Listing and CountingabstractThis article studies I/O-efficient algorithms for the triangle listing problem and the triangle counting problem , whose solutions are basic operators in dealing with many other graph problems. In the former problem, given an undirected graph G , the objective is to find all the cliques involving 3 vertices in G . In the latter problem, the objective is to report just the number of such cliques without having to enumerate them. Both problems have been well studied in internal memory, but still remain as difficult challenges when G does not fit in memory, thus making it crucial to minimize the number of disk I/Os performed. Although previous research has attempted to tackle these challenges, the state-of-the-art solutions rely on a set of crippling assumptions to guarantee good performance. Motivated by this, we develop a new algorithm that is provably I/O and CPU efficient at the same time, without making any assumption on the input G at all. The algorithm uses ideas drastically different from all the previous approaches, and outperforms the existing competitors by a factor of over an order of magnitude in our extensive experimentation. | 2013 | An efficient MapReduce algorithm for counting triangles in a very large graphabstractTriangle counting problem is one of the fundamental problem in various domains. The problem can be utilized for computation of clustering coefficient, transitivity, trianglular connectivity, trusses, etc. The problem have been extensively studied in internal memory but the algorithms are not scalable for enormous graphs. In recent years, the MapReduce has emerged as a de facto standard framework for processing large data through parallel computing. A MapReduce algorithm was proposed for the problem based on graph partitioning. However, the algorithm redundantly generates a large number of intermediate data that cause network overload and prolong the processing time. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm based on graph partitioning with a novel idea of triangle classification to count the number of triangles in a graph. The algorithm substantially reduces the duplication by classifying triangles into three types and processing each triangle differently according to its type. In the experiments, we compare the proposed algorithm with recent existing algorithms using both synthetic datasets and real-world datasets that are composed of millions of nodes and billions of edges. The proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms in most cases. Especially, for a twitter dataset, the proposed algorithm is more than twice as fast as existing MapReduce algorithms. Moreover, the performance gap increases as the graph becomes larger and denser. Ha-Myung Park, Chin-Wan Chung

Massive graph triangulationabstractThis paper studies I/O-efficient algorithms for settling the classic triangle listing problem, whose solution is a basic operator in dealing with many other graph problems. Specifically, given an undirected graph G, the objective of triangle listing is to find all the cliques involving 3 vertices in G. The problem has been well studied in internal memory, but remains an urgent difficult challenge when G does not fit in memory, rendering any algorithm to entail frequent I/O accesses. Although previous research has attempted to tackle the challenge, the state-of-the-art solutions rely on a set of crippling assumptions to guarantee good performance. Motivated by this, we develop a new algorithm that is provably I/O and CPU efficient at the same time, without making any assumption on the input G at all. | 2013 | Approximate MaxRS in Spatial DatabasesabstractIn the maximizing range sum (MaxRS) problem, given (i) a setPof 2D points each of which is associated with a positive weight, and (ii) a rectanglerof specific extents, we need to decide where to placerin order to maximize the covered weight ofr- that is, the total weight of the data points covered byr. Algorithms solving the problem exactly entail expensive CPU or I/O cost. In practice, exact answers are often not compulsory in a MaxRS application, where slight imprecision can often be comfortably tolerated, provided that approximate answers can be computed considerably faster. Motivated by this, the present paper studies the (1 - ε)-approximate MaxRS problem, which admits the same inputs as MaxRS, but aims instead to return a rectangle whose covered weight is at least (1-ε)m*, wherem* is the optimal covered weight, and ε can be an arbitrarily small constant between 0 and 1. We present fast algorithms that settle this problem with strong theoretical guarantees. Yufei Tao 0001, Xiaocheng Hu, Dong-Wan Choi, Chin-Wan Chung

QUBE: a quick algorithm for updating betweenness centralityabstractThe betweenness centrality of a vertex in a graph is a measure for the participation of the vertex in the shortest paths in the graph. The Betweenness centrality is widely used in network analyses. Especially in a social network, the recursive computation of the betweenness centralities of vertices is performed for the community detection and finding the influential user in the network. Since a social network graph is frequently updated, it is necessary to update the betweenness centrality efficiently. When a graph is changed, the betweenness centralities of all the vertices should be recomputed from scratch using all the vertices in the graph. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that proposes an efficient algorithm which handles the update of the betweenness centralities of vertices in a graph. In this paper, we propose a method that efficiently reduces the search space by finding a candidate set of vertices whose betweenness centralities can be updated and computes their betweenness centeralities using candidate vertices only. As the cost of calculating the betweenness centrality mainly depends on the number of vertices to be considered, the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the cost of calculation. The proposed algorithm allows the transformation of an existing algorithm which does not consider the graph update. Experimental results on large real datasets show that the proposed algorithm speeds up the existing algorithm 2 to 2418 times depending on the dataset. Min-Joong Lee, Jaimie Yejean Park, Ryan H. | 2012 | A Scalable Algorithm for Maximizing Range Sum in Spatial DatabasesabstractThis paper investigates the MaxRS problem in spatial databases. Given a set O of weighted points and a rectangular region r of a given size, the goal of the MaxRS problem is to find a location of r such that the sum of the weights of all the points covered by r is maximized. This problem is useful in many location-based applications such as finding the best place for a new franchise store with a limited delivery range and finding the most attractive place for a tourist with a limited reachable range. However, the problem has been studied mainly in theory, particularly, in computational geometry. The existing algorithms from the computational geometry community are in-memory algorithms which do not guarantee the scalability. In this paper, we propose a scalable external-memory algorithm ( ExactMaxRS ) for the MaxRS problem, which is optimal in terms of the I/O complexity. Furthermore, we propose an approximation algorithm ( ApproxMaxCRS ) for the MaxCRS problem that is a circle version of the MaxRS problem. We prove the correctness and optimality of the ExactMaxRS algorithm along with the approximation bound of the ApproxMaxCRS algorithm. From extensive experimental results, we show that the ExactMaxRS algorithm is two orders of magnitude faster than methods adapted from existing algorithms, and the approximation bound in practice is much better than the theoretical bound of the ApproxMaxCRS algorithm. | 2011 | RFID Data Processing in Supply Chain Management Using a Path Encoding SchemeabstractRFID technology can be applied to a broad range of areas. In particular, RFID is very useful in the area of business, such as supply chain management. However, the amount of RFID data in such an environment is huge. Therefore, much time is needed to extract valuable information from RFID data for supply chain management. In this paper, we present an efficient method to process a massive amount of RFID data for supply chain management. We first define query templates to analyze the supply chain. We then propose an effective path encoding scheme that encodes the flows of products. However, if the flows are long, the numbers in the path encoding scheme that correspond to the flows will be very large. We solve this by providing a method that divides flows. To retrieve the time information for products efficiently, we utilize a numbering scheme for the XML area. Based on the path encoding scheme and the numbering scheme, we devise a storage scheme that can process tracking queries and path oriented queries efficiently on an RDBMS. Finally, we propose a method that translates the queries to SQL queries. Experimental results show that our approach can process the queries efficiently. Chun-Hee Lee, Chin-Wan Chung

In order to effectively retrieve the most relevant top-k resources, we propose a novel ranking model. To do this, we devise a measure to determine the weight of the semantic relationship. In addition, we consider the number of meaningful semantic relationships between a resource and keywords, the coverage of keywords, and the distinguishability of keywords. Through experiments using real datasets, we observe that our ranking model provides more accurate semantic search results compared to existing ranking models. Jun-Ki Min, Chin-Wan Chung |

However, the amount of RFID data in supply chain management is huge. Therefore, it requires much time to extract valuable information from RFID data for supply chain management. In this paper, we define query templates for tracking queries and path oriented queries to analyze the supply chain. | 2006 | A compressor for effective archiving, retrieval, and updating of XML documentsabstractLike HTML, many XML documents are resident on native file systems. Since XML data is irregular and verbose, the disk space and the network bandwidth are wasted. To overcome the verbosity problem, research on compressors for XML data has been conducted. Some XML compressors do not support querying compressed data, while other XML compressors which support querying compressed data blindly encode tags and data values using predefined encoding methods. Existing XML compressors do not provide the facility for updates on compressed XML data.In this article, we propose XPRESS, an XML compressor which supports direct updates and efficient evaluations of queries on compressed XML data. XPRESS adopts a novel encoding method called reverse arithmetic encoding , which encodes label paths of XML data and applies diverse encoding methods depending on the types of data values. Experimental results with real-life data sets show that XPRESS achieves significant improvements on query performance for compressed XML data and reasonable compression ratios. On average, the query performance of XPRESS is 2.13 times better than that of an existing XML compressor, and the compression ratio of XPRESS is about 71%. Additionally, we demonstrate the efficiency of the updates performed directly on compressed XML data. Jun-Ki Min, Myung-Jae Park, Chin-Wan Chung |

Qcluster: Relevance Feedback Using Adaptive Clustering for Content-Based Image RetrievalabstractThe learning-enhanced relevance feedback has been one of the most active research areas in content-based image retrieval in recent years. However, few methods using the relevance feedback are currently available to process relatively complex queries on large image databases. In the case of complex image queries, the feature space and the distance function of the user's perception are usually different from those of the system. This difference leads to the representation of a query with multiple clusters (i.e., regions) in the feature space. Therefore, it is necessary to handle disjunctive queries in the feature space. In this paper, we propose a new content-based image retrieval method using adaptive classification and cluster-merging to find multiple clusters of a complex image query. When the measures of a retrieval method are invariant under linear transformations, the method can achieve the same retrieval quality regardless of the shapes of clusters of a query. Our method achieves the same high retrieval quality regardless of the shapes of clusters of a query since it uses such measures. Extensive experiments show that the result of our method converges to the user's true information need fast, and the retrieval quality of our method is about 22% in recall and 20% in precision better than that of the query expansion approach, and about 34% in recall and about 33% in precision better than that of the query point movement approach, in MARS. | 2002 | Selectivity estimation for spatio-temporal queries to moving objectsabstractA query optimizer requires selectivity estimation of a query to choose the most efficient access plan. An effective method of selectivity estimation for the future locations of moving objects has not yet been proposed. Existing methods for spatial selectivity estimation do not accurately estimate the selectivity of a query to moving objects, because they do not consider the future locations of moving objects, which change continuously as time passes. In this paper, we propose an effective method for spatio-temporal selectivity estimation to solve this problem. We present analytical formulas which accurately calculate the selectivity of a spatio-temporal query as a function of spatio-temporal information. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed method accurately estimates the selectivity over various queries to spatio-temporal data combining real-life spatial data and synthetic temporal data. When Tiger/lines is used as real-life spatial data, the application of an existing method for spatial selectivity estimation to the estimation of the selectivity of a query to moving objects has the average error ratio from 14% to 85%, whereas our method for spatio-temporal selectivity estimation has the average error ratio from 9% to 23%. | 2002 | APEX: an adaptive path index for XML dataabstractThe emergence of the Web has increased interests in XML data. XML query languages such as XQuery and XPath use label paths to traverse the irregularly structured data. Without a structural summary and efficient indexes, query processing can be quite inefficient due to an exhaustive traversal on XML data. To overcome the inefficiency, several path indexes have been proposed in the research community. Traditional indexes generally record all label paths from the root element in XML data. Such path indexes may result in performance degradation due to large sizes and exhaustive navigations for partial matching path queries start with the self-or-descendent axis("//").In this paper, we propose APEX, an adaptive path index for XML data. APEX does not keep all paths starting from the root and utilizes frequently used paths to improve the query performance. APEX also has a nice property that it can be updated incrementally according to the changes of query workloads. Experimental results with synthetic and real-life data sets clearly confirm that APEX improves query processing cost typically 2 to 54 times better than the existing indexes, with the performance gap increasing with the irregularity of XML data. | 2002 | The GC-tree: a high-dimensional index structure for similarity search in image databasesabstractWe propose a new dynamic index structure called the GC-tree (or the grid cell tree) for efficient similarity search in image databases. The GC-tree is based on a special subspace partitioning strategy which is optimized for a clustered high-dimensional image dataset. The basic ideas are threefold: 1) we adaptively partition the data space based on a density function that identifies dense and sparse regions in a data space; 2) we concentrate the partition on the dense regions, and the objects in the sparse regions of a certain partition level are treated as if they lie within a single region; and 3) we dynamically construct an index structure that corresponds to the space partition hierarchy. The resultant index structure adapts well to the strongly clustered distribution of high-dimensional image datasets. To demonstrate the practical effectiveness of the GC-tree, we experimentally compared the GC-tree with the IQ-tree, LPC-file, VA-file, and linear scan. The result of our experiments shows that the GC-tree outperforms all other methods. Guang-Ho Cha, Chin-Wan Chung

An efficient indexing method for nearest neighbor searches in high-dirnensional image databasesabstractNearest neighbor (NN) search is emerging as an important search paradigm in a variety of applications in which objects are represented as vectors of d numeric features. However, despite decades of efforts, except for the filtering approach such as the VA-file, the current solutions to find exact kNNs are far from satisfactory for large d. The filtering approach represents vectors as compact approximations and by first scanning these smaller approximations, only a small fraction of the real vectors are visited. In this paper, we introduce the local polar coordinate file (LPC-file) using the filtering approach for nearest-neighbor searches in high-dimensional image databases. The basic idea is to partition the vector space into rectangular cells and then to approximate vectors by polar coordinates on the partitioned local cells. The LPC information significantly enhances the discriminatory power of the approximation. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the LPC-file, we conducted extensive experiments and compared the performance with the VA-file and the sequential scan by using synthetic and real data sets. The experimental results demonstrate that the LPC-file outperforms both of the VA-file and the sequential scan in total elapsed time and in the number of disk accesses and that the LPC-file is robust in both "good" distributions (such as random) and "bad" distributions (such as skewed and clustered). However, the distance learning is often impeded by the lack of effective methods to retrieve specific parts of a lecture by contents. This paper introduces a new approach to realize the content-based lecture retrieval on the Web. The approach involves: (1) The XML(eXtensible Markup Language)-based semistructured model not only to represent lecture contents but also to exchange them on the Web; (2) The technique to build structural summaries, i.e., schemas, of XML lecture databases. The structural summaries are useful for browsing and querying the database, building indexes, and enabling query optimization; (3) Index structures to speed up the search to find appropriate lecture contents. | 2000 | Similarity Search for Multidimensional Data SequencesabstractTime series data, which are a series of one dimensional real numbers, have been studied in various database applications. We extend the traditional similarity search methods on time series data to support a multidimensional data sequence, such as a video stream. We investigate the problem of retrieving similar multidimensional data sequences from a large database. To prune irrelevant sequences in a database, we introduce correct and efficient similarity functions. Both data sequences and query sequences are partitioned into subsequences, and each of them is represented by a Minimum Bounding Rectangle (MBR). The query processing is based upon these MBRs, instead of scanning data elements of entire sequences. Our method is designed: (1) to select candidate sequences in a database, and (2) to find the subsequences of a selected sequence, each of which falls under the given threshold. The latter is of special importance in the case of retrieving subsequences from large and complex sequences such as video. By using it, we do not need to browse the whole of the selected video stream, but just browse the sub-streams to find a scene we want. We have performed an extensive experiment on synthetic, as well as real data sequences (a collection of TV news, dramas, and documentary videos) to evaluate our proposed method. The experiment demonstrates that 73-94 percent of irrelevant sequences are pruned using the proposed method, resulting in 16-28 times faster response time compared with that of the sequential search. | 1999 | Early Separation of Filter and Refinement Steps in Spatial Query OptimizationabstractThe spatial query has been processed in two steps, the filter step and the refinement step, due to the large volume and high complexity of the spatial data. However, this approach has been considered only in the query execution phase after completion of the query optimization phase. This paper presents query optimization strategies which take the characteristics of spatial databases into account. The first strategy is the separation of filter and refinement steps not in the query execution phase but in the query optimization phase. As the second strategy, several refinement operations can be combined in processing a complex query, and as the third strategy several filter operations can also be combined. We call the optimization technique utilizing these strategies the early separated filter and refinement (ESFAR). This paper also presents a rule-based optimization technique for ESFAR. | 1999 | Multi-dimensional Selectivity Estimation Using Compressed Histogram InformationabstractThe database query optimizer requires the estimation of the query selectivity to find the most efficient access plan. For queries referencing multiple attributes from the same relation, we need a multi-dimensional selectivity estimation technique when the attributes are dependent each other because the selectivity is determined by the joint data distribution of the attributes. Additionally, for multimedia databases, there are intrinsic requirements for the multi-dimensional selectivity estimation because feature vectors are stored in multi-dimensional indexing trees. In the 1-dimensional case, a histogram is practically the most preferable. In the multi-dimensional case, however, a histogram is not adequate because of high storage overhead and high error rates. | 1999 | Knowledge and Object-Oriented Approach for Interoperability of Heterogeneous Information Management SystemsabstractFor the interoperability of heterogeneous information management systems, schema mapping approaches have been used to build a unified view. The schema mapping approach offers full transparencies and is very powerful from the user’s point of view. However, the traditional mapping approach needs to be strengthened for information management systems that have non-traditional data types, no schema, or incompatible schemas. We have incorporated numerous concepts and constructs associated with the knowledge and object-oriented paradigm such as abstract views with a set of procedures, encapsulation, inheritance and class composition hierarchies to resolve the above problem. This extension also accommodates the ability to determine and explicitly represent the semantics in the schema. Additionally, we have outlined a query processing method using the unified view. We are currently developing a prototype to support seamless access to structured data and unstructured data managed by different information management systems.Request access from your librarian to read this article's full text. | 1996 | Spatial Query Processing Using Object Decomposition MethodabstractWe propose a new object decomposition method, called DMBRs, to improve the performance of spatial query processing. This method is suitable for complex spatial objects in real-world geographic applications. The basic idea is that a polygon is recursively divided into two subpolygons by splitting its MBR until a given constraint is satisfied. To increase the efficiency of the DMBRs method, an extension of an existing spatial indexing structure is presented. Since this new structure can prune a number of false hits quickly, the performance of spatial query processing can be improved. The proposed method is compared with traditional decomposition methods by an analytical study. This comparison shows that our decomposition method outperforms the traditional decomposition methods. 1 Introduction Queries in spatial databases are usually concerned with massive volumes of data and complex spatial objects. | 1993 | Access to Indexed Hierarchical Databases Using a Relational Query LanguageabstractAn efficient means of accessing indexed hierarchical databases using a relational query language is presented. The purpose is to achieve an effective sharing of heterogeneous distributed databases. Translation of hierarchical data to an equivalent relational data definition, translation of a relational query language statement to an equivalent program that can be processed by a hierarchical database management system, and automatic selection of secondary indexes of hierarchical databases are investigated. A major portion of the result has been implemented, and the performance of the implemented system is analyzed. The performance of the system is satisfactory for a wide range of test data and test queries. It is shown that the utilization of the secondary index significantly enhances the efficiency in accessing hierarchical databases.> Chin-Wan Chung, Kenneth E. McCloskey

Design and Implementation of a Heterogeneous Distributed Database Management SystemabstractThe architectural design is presented of DATAPLEX, a heterogeneous distributed database management system, and a prototype DATAPLEX. The objective of DATAPLEX is to integrate existing diverse databases as well as emerging new databases within an organization for organization-wide date sharing and data consistency. The architecture of DATAPLEX is based on the relational data model as a common data model and the structured query language (SQL) as a standard query language. A method to decompose distributed queries in this architecture is developed. The prototype system interfaces an IMS hierarchical database management system (DBMS) on IBM/MVS and an INGRES relational DBMS on DEC/VMS.> Chin-Wan Chung
