2004 A declarative approach to optimize bulk loading into databases
abstract
Applications, such as warehouse maintenance, need to load large data volumes regularly. The efficiency of loading depends on the resources that are available at the source and at the target systems. Our work aims to understand the performance criteria that are involved in bulk loading data into a database and to devise tailored optimization strategies.Unlike commercial systems and previous research on the same topic, our approach follows the fundamental database principle of physical-logical independence. A loading program is represented as a sequence of algebraic expressions. This abstraction enables the use of appropriate algebraic rewritings to optimize a loading program and of a cost model that takes into consideration efficiency criteria such as the processing times at the source and target systems and the bandwidth between them. A slow-loading program may be preferable if it does not slow down other applications by consuming too much memory. Thus, we view the problem of optimizing a loading program as finding a compromise between several efficiency criteria. The ability to represent loading programs in an algebra and performance criteria in a cost model has two very desirable properties: reusability and efficiency. Database programmers do not have to write loading programs by hand. In addition, tuning loading programs becomes easier since programmers have a better control on the performance criteria specified in the cost model. The algebra captures data transformations that would have been otherwise hardcoded in loading programs. Consequently, richer optimizations can be explored. Finally, our optimization techniques are not specific to one particular system. They can be used for loading data and from to any structured store (e.g., relational, structured files). We implemented our ideas in a complete environment for migrating ODBC-compliant databases into the O2object-oriented database system. This prototype provides a declarative view language to specify loading, an interface to specify directives, such as desired database physical organization and constraints on several criteria, such as resource and bandwidth consumption, an algebraic optimizer, a code generator, and an execution environment to control failures and guarantee incremental loading. Our experiments show that a tailored optimization is necessary when loading large data volumes into a database.

2000 On Wrapping Query Languages and Efficient XML Integration
abstract
Modern applications (Web portals, digital libraries, etc.) require integrated access to various information sources (from traditional DBMS to semistructured Web repositories), fast deployment and low maintenance cost in a rapidly evolving environment. Because of its flexibility, there is an increasing interest in using XML as a middleware model for such applications. XML enables fast wrapping and declarative integration. However, query processing in XML-based integration systems is still penalized by the lack of an algebra with adequate optimization properties and the difficulty to understand source query capabilities. In this paper, we propose an algebraic approach to support efficient XML query evaluation. We define a general purpose algebra suitable for semistructured on XML query languages. We show how this algebra can be used, with appropriate type information, to also wrap more structured query languages such as OQL or SQL. Finally, we develop new optimization techniques for XML-based integration systems.

1999 Using LDAP Directory Caches
abstract
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) directories have recently proliferated with the growth of the Internet, and are being used in a wide variety of network-based applications to store data such as personal profiles, address books, and network and service policies. These systems provide a means for managing heterogeneity in a way far superior to what conventional relational or object-oriented databases can offer. To achieve fast performance for declarative query answering, it is desirable to use client caching based on semantic information (instead of individual directory entries). We formally consider the problem of reusing cached LDAP directory entries for answering declarative LDAP queries. A semantic LDAP directory cache contains directory entries, which are semantically described by a set of query templates. We show that, for conjunctive queries and LDAP directory caches with positive templates, the complexity of cache-answerability is NP-complete in the size of the query....

1998 Your Mediators Need Data Conversion!
abstract
Due to the development of the World Wide Web, the integration of heterogeneous data sources has become a major concern of the database community. Appropriate architectures and query languages have been proposed. Yet, the problem of data conversion which is essential for the development of mediators/wrappers architectures has remained largely unexplored.

1996 Evaluating Queries with Generalized Path Expressions
abstract
In the past few years, query languages featuring generalized path expressions have been proposed. These languages allow the interrogation of both data and structure. They are powerful and essential for a number of applications. However, until now, their evaluation has relied on a rather naive and inefficient algorithm. In this paper, we extend an object algebra with two new operators and present some interesting rewriting techniques for queries featuring generalized path expressions. We also show how a query optimizer can integrate the new techniques.

1995 A Database Interface for File Updates
abstract
Database systems are concerned with structured data. Unfortunately, data is still often available in an unstructured manner (e.g., in files) even when it does have a strong internal structure (e.g., electronic documents or programs). In a previous paper [2], we focussed on the use of high-level query languages to access such files and developed optimization techniques to do so. In this paper, we consider how structured data stored in files can be updated using database update languages.

1994 From Structured Documents to Novel Query Facilities
abstract
Structured documents (e.g., SGML) can benefit a lot from database support and more specifically from object-oriented database (OODB) management systems. This paper describes a natural mapping from SGML documents into OODB's and a formal extension of two OODB query languages (one SQL-like and the other calculus) in order to deal with SGML document retrieval.

1992 A General Framework for the Optimization of Object-Oriented Queries
abstract
The goal of this work is to integrate in a general framework the different query optimization techniques that have been proposed in the object-oriented context. As a first step, we focus essentially on the logical aspect of query optimization. In this paper, we propose a formalism (i) that unifies different rewriting formalisms, (ii) that allows easy and exhaustive factorization of duplicated subqueries, and (iii) that supports heuristics in order to reduce the optimization rewriting phase.
