A practical and effective sampling selection strategy for large scale deduplicationabstractRecord deduplication aims at identifying entities that are potentially the same in a data repository. A set of pairs that is manually labeled is generally used to tune the deduplication process, as each dataset has a particular dirtiness pattern. However, producing an informative set of pairs is a very costly task, especially in very large datasets (even for expert users). We propose a new sampling strategy that is able to select a very small and informative set of pairs from large datasets. Our results show that our approach reduces user effort substantially while achieving a competitive or superior matching quality. | 2015 | A Practical and Effective Sampling Selection Strategy for Large Scale DeduplicationabstractThe data deduplication task has attracted a considerable amount of attention from the research community in order to provide effective and efficient solutions. The information provided by the user to tune the deduplication process is usually represented by a set of manually labeled pairs. In very large datasets, producing this kind of labeled set is a daunting task since it requires an expert to select and label a large number of informative pairs. In this article, we propose a two-stage sampling selection strategy (T3S) that selects a reduced set of pairs to tune the deduplication process in large datasets. T3S selects the most representative pairs by following two stages. In the first stage, we propose a strategy to produce balanced subsets of candidate pairs for labeling. In the second stage, an active selection is incrementally invoked to remove the redundant pairs in the subsets created in the first stage in order to produce an even smaller and more informative training set. This training set is effectively used both to identify where the most ambiguous pairs lie and to configure the classification approaches. Our evaluation shows that T3S is able to reduce the labeling effort substantially while achieving a competitive or superior matching quality when compared with state-of-the-art deduplication methods in large datasets. | 2014 | ARCTIC: metadata extraction from scientific papers in pdf using two-layer CRFabstractMost scientific articles are available in PDF format. The PDF standard allows the generation of metadata that is included within the document. However, many authors do not define this information, making this feature unreliable or incomplete. This fact has been motivating research which aims to extract metadata automatically. Automatic metadata extraction has been identified as one of the most challenging tasks in document engineering. This work proposes Artic, a method for metadata extraction from scientific papers which employs a two-layer probabilistic framework based on Conditional Random Fields. The first layer aims at identifying the main sections with metadata information, and the second layer finds, for each section, the corresponding metadata. Given a PDF file containing a scientific paper, Artic extracts the title, author names, emails, affiliations, and venue information. We report on experiments using 100 real papers from a variety of publishers. Our results outperformed the state-of-the-art system used as the baseline, achieving a precision of over 99%. | 2013 | Tuning large scale deduplication with reduced effortabstractDeduplication is the task of identifying which objects are potentially the same in a data repository. It usually demands user intervention in several steps of the process, mainly to identify some pairs representing matchings and non-matchings. This information is then used to help in identifying other potentially duplicated records. When deduplication is applied to very large datasets, the performance and matching quality depends on expert users to configure the most important steps of the process (e.g., blocking and classification). In this paper, we propose a new framework called FS-Dedup able to help tuning the deduplication process on large datasets with a reduced effort from the user, who is only required to label a small, automatically selected, subset of pairs. FS-Dedup exploits Signature-Based Deduplication (Sig-Dedup) algorithms in its deduplication core. Sig-Dedup is characterized by high efficiency and scalability in large datasets but requires an expert user to tune several parameters. FS-Dedup helps in solving this drawback by providing a framework that does not demand specialized user knowledge about the dataset or thresholds to produce high effectiveness. Our evaluation over large real and synthetic datasets (containing millions of records) shows that FS-Dedup is able to reach or even surpass the maximal matching quality obtained by Sig-Dedup techniques with a reduced manual effort from the user. | 2013 | Prequery Discovery of Domain-Specific Query Forms: A SurveyabstractThe discovery of HTML query forms is one of the main challenges in Deep Web crawling. Automatic solutions for this problem perform two main tasks. The first is locating HTML forms on the Web, which is done through the use of traditional/focused crawlers. The second is identifying which of these forms are indeed meant for querying, which also typically involves determining a domain for the underlying data source (and thus for the form as well). This problem has attracted a great deal of interest, resulting in a long list of algorithms and techniques. Some methods submit requests through the forms and then analyze the data retrieved in response, typically requiring a great deal of knowledge about the domain as well as semantic processing. Others do not employ form submission, to avoid such difficulties, although some techniques rely to some extent on semantics and domain knowledge. This survey gives an up-to-date review of methods for the discovery of domain-specific query forms that do not involve form submission. We detail these methods and discuss how form discovery has become increasingly more automated over time. We conclude with a forecast of what we believe are the immediate next steps in this trend. | 2010 | Indexing relations on the webabstractThere has been a substantial increase in the volume of (semi) structured data on the Web. This opens new opportunities for exploring and querying these data that goes beyond the keyword-based queries traditionally used on the Web. But supporting queries over a very large number of apparently disconnected Web sources is challenging. In this paper we propose index methods that capture both the structure of the sources and connections between them. The indexes are designed for data that is represented as relations, such as HTML tables, and support queries with predicates. We show how associations between overlapping sources are discovered, captured in the indexes, and used to derive query rewritings that join multiple sources. We demonstrate, through an experimental evaluation, that our approach scales to a large number of sources. Sérgio Luis Sardi Mergen, Juliana Freire, Carlos Alberto Heuser

Matching XML documents in highly dynamic applicationsabstractHighly dynamic applications like the Web and peer-to-peer systems require a great deal of effort in document management. Documents from different sources may contain parts that, although having different structure or different contents, may be considered as representing the same conceptual information. One essential task in this scenario is the identification of complementary or overlapping documents that need to be integrated. In this paper, we deal specifically with documents represented in the XML format. XML document integration is an important process in highly dynamic applications, for the volume of data available in this format is constantly growing. XML integration is also a challenging task, due to the flexible nature of XML, which may lead to structure divergences and content conflicts between the documents. In this work, we present a novel approach to the matching problem, i.e., the problem of defining which parts of two documents contain the same information. Matching is usually the first step of an integration process. Our approach is novel in the sense it combines similarity information from the content of the elements with information from the structure of the documents. This feature, as our experiments confirm, makes our approach capable of dealing with content as well as structural divergences. Adrovane M. Kade, Carlos Alberto Heuser

Querying structured information sources on the webabstractTo provide access to distributed and heterogeneous sources, information integration systems have traditionally relied on the availability of a mediated schema, along with mappings between this schema and the schema of the information sources. Queries posed to the mediated schema are then reformulated in terms of the source schemas. On the Web, where sources are plentiful, autonomous and extremely volatile, a system based on the existence of a pre-defined mediated schema and mapping information presents several drawbacks. Notably, the cost of keeping the mappings up to date as new sources are found or existing sources change can be prohibitively high. In this paper, we propose a new querying mechanism for integrating a large number of sources that requires neither a mediated schema nor source mappings. In the absence of a mediated schema, the user formulates queries based on what she expects to find. These queries are rewritten using a best-effort approach: the rewriting component compares a user query against the source schemas and produces a set of rewritings based on the matches found. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach by providing a query interface for integrating hundreds of (real) structured Web information sources. We also discuss experimental results which indicate that our query rewriting algorithm can be effective. Sérgio Luis Sardi Mergen, Juliana Freire, Carlos Alberto Heuser

A strategy for allowing meaningful and comparable scores in approximate matchingabstractThe goal of approximate data matching is to assess whether two distinct data instances represent the same real world object. This is usually achieved through the use of a similarity function, which returns a score that defines how similar two data instances are. If this score surpasses a given threshold, both data instances are considered as representing the same real world object. The score values returned by a similarity function depend on the algorithm that implements the function and have no meaning to the user (apart from the fact that a higher similarity value means that two data instances are more similar). In this paper, we propose that instead of defining the threshold in terms of the scores returned by a similarity function, the user specifies the precision that is expected from the matching process. Precision is a well known quality measure and has a clear interpretation from the user's point of view. Our approach relies on mapping between similarity scores and precision values based on a training data set. Experimental results show the training may be executed against a representative data set, and reused for other databases from the same domain. Carina F. | 2007 | A Two Layered Approach for Querying Integrated XML SourcesabstractThe problem of data integration (query decomposition, data fragmentation) has been widely studied in literature, but the inherent hierarchical nature of XML data presents problems that are specific to this data model. Each many-to-many conceptual relationship must be mapped to a specific hierarchical structure in XML. Different XML sources may implement the same many-to-many conceptual relationship in different ways. In our approach the problem of integration of XML data sources is decomposed in two problems: (1) that of fragmentation of a global graph-like model (e.g., an ER model) into several local graph-like models conceptually representing data sources and (2) that of mapping the local graph-like model into an XML tree-like schema. This paper presents a set of fragmentation operators specifically designed for our approach, as well as a query decomposition mechanism that allows a query stated at the conceptual level to be decomposed into an XQuery statement at the XML level. As the query language at the conceptual level, we adopt CXPath (conceptual XPath) a query language we have defined in previous work. Felipe Victolla Silveira, Carlos Alberto Heuser

| 2006 | PATAXÓ: A framework to allow updates through XML viewsabstractXML has become an important medium for data exchange, and is frequently used as an interface to (i.e., a view of) a relational database. Although a lot of work has been done on querying relational databases through XML views, the problem of updating relational databases through XML views has not received much attention. In this work, we map XML views expressed using a subset of XQuery to a corresponding set of relational views. Thus, we transform the problem of updating relational databases through XML views into a classical problem of updating relational databases through relational views. We then show how updates on the XML view are mapped to updates on the corresponding relational views. Existing work on updating relational views can then be leveraged to determine whether or not the relational views are updatable with respect to the relational updates, and if so, to translate the updates to the underlying relational database.
