Deduplicating Large Volumes of Data from Natural and Legal Entities in the Governmental FieldabstractRecord Deduplication (RD) aims to identify instances that represent the same real-world entity in data repositories. In the government environment, the RD process facilitates the identification of irregularities and reduces the consumption of computing resources in data integration tasks. In this context, we propose a scalable, effective and efficient platform, called DedupeGov, for integrating large data repositories (i.e., with large volumes of data, in the order of millions of records) to unify duplicate entities from multiple and different sources. Our experimental results indicate a 21.8% of reduction in the number of records of the original repository with 99% of precision and 95% of recall when identifying duplicate records. In addition, our platform was capable of building more complete records, eliminating at least 32% of records with null attributes. Furthermore, our solution is very efficient and scalable for large volumes of data, deduplicating a repository of almost 400 million records in around one hour, besides being easy to generalize to different types of entity. | 2019 | Characterizing knowledge-transfer relationships in dynamic attributed networksabstractCharacterizing dynamic interactions is currently an important issue when analyzing complex social networks. In this paper, we reinforce the importance of social concepts as the strategic positioning of an actor in a social structure, thus bringing new insights to the analysis of complex networks. Specifically, we propose a new method to characterize relationships based on temporal node-attributes that captures how knowledge is transferred across the network. As a result, we unveil the differences of social relationships in different academic social networks and Q&A communities. We also validate our social definitions in terms of the importance of the edges as assessed by the betweenness centrality metric and compare our results with those of two existing methods. Finally, we apply our method to a ranking task in order to measure the academic importance of researchers. Thiago H. P. Silva, Alberto H. F. Laender, Pedro O. S. Vaz de Melo

Dynamic Prediction of ICU Mortality Risk Using Domain AdaptationabstractEarly recognition of risky trajectories during an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay is one of the key steps towards improving patient survival. Learning trajectories from physiological signals continuously measured during an ICU stay requires learning time-series features that are robust and discriminative across diverse patient populations. Patients within different ICU populations (referred here as domains) vary by age, conditions and interventions. Thus, mortality prediction models using patient data from a particular ICU population may perform suboptimally in other populations because the features used to train such models have different distributions across the groups. In this paper, we explore domain adaptation strategies in order to learn mortality prediction models that extract and transfer complex temporal features from multivariate time-series ICU data. Features are extracted in a way that the state of the patient in a certain time depends on the previous state. This enables dynamic predictions and creates a mortality risk space that describes the risk of a patient at a particular time. Experiments based on cross-ICU populations reveals that our model outperforms all considered baselines. Gains in terms of AUC range from 4% to 8% for early predictions when compared with a recent state-of-the-art representative for ICU mortality prediction. In particular, models for the Cardiac ICU population achieve AUC numbers as high as 0.88, showing excellent clinical utility for early mortality prediction. Finally, we present an explanation of factors contributing to the possible ICU outcomes, so that our models can be used to complement clinical reasoning. Tiago Alves 0002, Alberto H. F. | 2018 | Social-Based Classification of Multiple Interactions in Dynamic Attributed NetworksabstractHow to classify the dynamic interactions in social networks? We address this task by exploring the behavior and the dynamics of the actors in a social network. Specifically, we reinforce the importance of social concepts to capture the social meaning of relationships. Then, we propose a new strategy to classify nodes and dynamic edges based on node-attribute relationships. We apply our proposal to two attribute scenarios: tokens associated with edges and social ties associated with communities. As a result, we unveil the differences of social relationships in different academic social network scenarios. Our method differs from an existing one by defining more elaborated classes in terms of social concepts and performing 7.7 times faster than it. Finally, we validate our social definitions in terms of the best positioned nodes according to network metrics, as well as investigate the robustness of our method . Thiago H. P. Silva, Alberto H. F. | 2017 | Incremental author name disambiguation by exploiting domain-specific heuristicsabstractThe vast majority of the current author name disambiguation solutions are designed to disambiguate a whole digital library (DL) at once considering the entire repository. However, these solutions besides being very expensive and having scalability problems, also may not benefit from eventual manual corrections, as they may be lost whenever the process of disambiguating the entire repository is required. In the real world, in which repositories are updated on a daily basis, incremental solutions that disambiguate only the newly introduced citation records, are likely to produce improved results in the long run. However, the problem of incremental author name disambiguation has been largely neglected in the literature. In this article we present a new author name disambiguation method, specially designed for the incremental scenario. In our experiments, our new method largely outperforms recent incremental proposals reported in the literature as well as the current state‐of‐the‐art non‐incremental method. | 2016 | The LExR Collection for Expertise Retrieval in AcademiaabstractExpertise retrieval has been the subject of intense research over the past decade, particularly with the public availability of benchmark test collections for expertise retrieval in enterprises. Another domain which has seen comparatively less research on expertise retrieval is academic search. In this paper, we describe the Lattes Expertise Retrieval (LExR) test collection for research on academic expertise retrieval. LExR has been designed to provide a large-scale benchmark for two complementary expertise retrieval tasks, namely, expert profiling and expert finding. Unlike currently available test collections, which fully support only one of these tasks, LExR provides graded relevance judgments performed by expert judges separately for each task. In addition, LExR is both cross-organization and cross-area, encompassing candidate experts from all areas of knowledge working in research institutions all over Brazil. As a result, it constitutes a valuable resource for fostering new research directions on expertise retrieval in an academic setting. Vítor Mangaravite, Rodrygo L. T. Santos, Isac S. | 2015 | On Tag Recommendation for Expertise Profiling: A Case Study in the Scientific DomainabstractBuilding expertise profiles is a crucial step towards identifying experts in different knowledge areas. However, summarizing the topics of expertise of a given individual is a challenging task, primarily due to the semi-structured and heterogeneous nature of the documentary evidence available for this task. In this paper, we investigate the suitability of tag recommendation as a mechanism to produce effective expertise profiles. In particular, we perform a large-scale user study with academic experts from different knowledge areas to assess the effectiveness of multiple supervised and unsupervised tag recommendation approaches as well as multiple sources of textual evidence. Our analysis reveals that traditional content-based tag recommenders perform well at identifying expertise-oriented tags, with article keywords being a particularly effective source of evidence across profiles in different knowledge areas and with various levels of sparsity. Moreover, by combining multiple recommenders and sources of evidence as learning signals, we further demonstrate the effectiveness of tag recommendation for expertise profiling. Isac S. | 2014 | Self-training author name disambiguation for information scarce scenariosabstractWe present a novel 3‐step self‐training method for author name disambiguation—SAND (self‐training associative name disambiguator)—which requires no manual labeling, no parameterization (in real‐world scenarios) and is particularly suitable for the common situation in which only the most basic information about a citation record is available (i.e., author names, and work and venue titles). During the first step, real‐world heuristics on coauthors are able to produce highly pure (although fragmented) clusters. The most representative of these clusters are then selected to serve as training data for the third supervised author assignment step. The third step exploits a state‐of‐the‐art transductive disambiguation method capable of detecting unseen authors not included in any training example and incorporating reliable predictions to the training data. Experiments conducted with standard public collections, using the minimum set of attributes present in a citation, demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms all representative unsupervised author grouping disambiguation methods and is very competitive with fully supervised author assignment methods. Thus, different from other bootstrapping methods that explore privileged, hard to obtain information such as self‐citations and personal information, our proposed method produces topnotch performance with no (manual) training data or parameterization and in the presence of scarce information. | 2012 | A Genetic Programming Approach to Record DeduplicationabstractSeveral systems that rely on consistent data to offer high-quality services, such as digital libraries and e-commerce brokers, may be affected by the existence of duplicates, quasi replicas, or near-duplicate entries in their repositories. Because of that, there have been significant investments from private and government organizations for developing methods for removing replicas from its data repositories. This is due to the fact that clean and replica-free repositories not only allow the retrieval of higher quality information but also lead to more concise data and to potential savings in computational time and resources to process this data. In this paper, we propose a genetic programming approach to record deduplication that combines several different pieces of evidence extracted from the data content to find a deduplication function that is able to identify whether two entries in a repository are replicas or not. As shown by our experiments, our approach outperforms an existing state-of-the-art method found in the literature. Moreover, the suggested functions are computationally less demanding since they use fewer evidence. In addition, our genetic programming approach is capable of automatically adapting these functions to a given fixed replica identification boundary, freeing the user from the burden of having to choose and tune this parameter. | 2011 | Joint unsupervised structure discovery and information extractionabstractIn this paper we present JUDIE (Joint Unsupervised Structure Discovery and Information Extraction), a new method for automatically extracting semi-structured data records in the form of continuous text (e.g., bibliographic citations, postal addresses, classified ads, etc.) and having no explicit delimiters between them. While in state-of-the-art Information Extraction methods the structure of the data records is manually supplied the by user as a training step, JUDIE is capable of detecting the structure of each individual record being extracted without any user assistance. This is accomplished by a novel Structure Discovery algorithm that, given a sequence of labels representing attributes assigned to potential values, groups these labels into individual records by looking for frequent patterns of label repetitions among the given sequence. We also show how to integrate this algorithm in the information extraction process by means of successive refinement steps that alternate information extraction and structure discovery. Through an extensively experimental evaluation with different datasets in distinct domains, we compare JUDIE with state-of-the-art information extraction methods and conclude that, even without any user intervention, it is able to achieve high quality results on the tasks of discovering the structure of the records and extracting information from them. | 2011 | A generic Web-based entity resolution frameworkabstractWeb data repositories usually contain references to thousands of real-world entities from multiple sources. It is not uncommon that multiple entities share the same label (polysemes) and that distinct label variations are associated with the same entity (synonyms), which frequently leads to ambiguous interpretations. Further, spelling variants, acronyms, abbreviated forms, and misspellings compound to worsen the problem. Solving this problem requires identifying which labels correspond to the same real-world entity, a process known as entity resolution. One approach to solve the entity resolution problem is to associate an authority identifier and a list of variant forms with each entity—a data structure known as an authority file. In this work, we propose a generic framework for implementing a method for generating authority files. Our method uses information from the Web to improve the quality of the authority file and, because of that, is referred to as WER—Web-based Entity Resolution. Our contribution here is threefold: (a) we discuss how to implement the WER framework, which is flexible and easy to adapt to new domains; (b) we run extended experimentation with our WER framework to show that it outperforms selected baselines; and (c) we compare the results of a specialized solution for author name resolution with those produced by the generic WER framework, and show that the WER results remain competitive. | 2010 | Active Learning Genetic programming for record deduplicationabstractThe great majority of genetic programming (GP) algorithms that deal with the classification problem follow a supervised approach, i.e., they consider that all fitness cases available to evaluate their models are labeled. However, in certain application domains, a lot of human effort is required to label training data, and methods following a semi-supervised approach might be more appropriate. This is because they significantly reduce the time required for data labeling while maintaining acceptable accuracy rates. This paper presents the Active Learning GP (AGP), a semi-supervised GP, and instantiates it for the data deduplication problem. AGP uses an active learning approach in which a committee of multi-attribute functions votes for classifying record pairs as duplicates or not. When the committee majority voting is not enough to predict the class of the data pairs, a user is called to solve the conflict. The method was applied to three datasets and compared to two other deduplication methods. Results show that AGP guarantees the quality of the deduplication while reducing the number of labeled examples needed. Junio de Freitas, Gisele L. | 2010 | An unsupervised heuristic-based hierarchical method for name disambiguation in bibliographic citationsabstractAbstract Name ambiguity in the context of bibliographic citations is a difficult problem which, despite the many efforts from the research community, still has a lot of room for improvement. In this article, we present a heuristic‐based hierarchical clustering method to deal with this problem. The method successively fuses clusters of citations of similar author names based on several heuristics and similarity measures on the components of the citations (e.g., coauthor names, work title, and publication venue title). During the disambiguation task, the information about fused clusters is aggregated providing more information for the next round of fusion. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we ran a series of experiments in two different collections extracted from real‐world digital libraries and compared it, under two metrics, with four representative methods described in the literature. We present comparisons of results using each considered attribute separately (i.e., coauthor names, work title, and publication venue title) with the author name attribute and using all attributes together. These results show that our unsupervised method, when using all attributes, performs competitively against all other methods, under both metrics, loosing only in one case against a supervised method, whose result was very close to ours. Moreover, such results are achieved without the burden of any training and without using any privileged information such as knowing a priori the correct number of clusters. Ricardo G. | 2009 | A geographical analysis of knowledge production in computer scienceabstractWe analyze knowledge production in Computer Science by means of coauthorship networks. For this, we consider 30 graduate programs of different regions of the world, being 8 programs in Brazil, 16 in North America (3 in Canada and 13 in the United States), and 6 in Europe (2 in France, 1 in Switzerland and 3 in the United Kingdom). We use a dataset that consists of 176,537 authors and 352,766 publication entries distributed among 2,176 publication venues. The results obtained for different metrics of collaboration social networks indicate the process of knowledge creation has changed differently for each region. Research is increasingly done in teams across different fields of Computer Science. The size of the giant component indicates the existence of isolated collaboration groups in the European network, contrasting to the degree of connectivity found in the Brazilian and North-American counterparts. We also analyzed the temporal evolution of the social networks representing the three regions. The number of authors per paper experienced an increase in a time span of 12 years. We observe that the number of collaborations between authors grows faster than the number of authors, benefiting from the existing network structure. The temporal evolution shows differences between well-established fields, such as Databases and Computer Architecture, and emerging fields, like Bioinformatics and Geoinformatics. The patterns of collaboration analyzed in this paper contribute to an overall understanding of Computer Science research in different geographical regions that could not be achieved without the use of complex networks and a large publication database. | 2008 | Keeping a digital library clean: new solutions to old problemsabstractDigital Libraries are complex information systems that involve rich sets of digital objects and their respective metadata, along with multiple organizational structures and services (e.g., searching, browsing, and personalization), and are normally built having a target community of users with specific interests. Central to the success of this type of system is the quality of their services and content. In the context of DLs of scientific literature, among the many problems faced to sustain their information quality, two specific ones, related to information consistency, have taken a lot of attention from the research community: name disambiguation and lack of information to access the full-text of cataloged documents. In this paper, we examine these two problems and describe the solutions we have proposed to solve them. Alberto H. F. Laender, Marcos André Gonçalves, Ricardo G. Cota, Anderson A. | 2006 | Categorization-driven cross-language retrieval of medical informationabstractAbstract The Web has become a large repository of documents (or pages) written in many different languages. In this context, traditional information retrieval (IR) techniques cannot be used whenever the user query and the documents being retrieved are in different languages. To address this problem, new cross‐language information retrieval (CLIR) techniques have been proposed. In this work, we describe a method for cross‐language retrieval of medical information. This method combines query terms and related medical concepts obtained automatically through a categorization procedure. The medical concepts are used to create a linguistic abstraction that allows retrieval of information in a language‐independent way, minimizing linguistic problems such as polysemy. To evaluate our method, we carried out experiments using the OHSUMED test collection, whose documents are written in English, with queries expressed in Portuguese, Spanish, and French. The results indicate that our cross‐language retrieval method is as effective as a standard vector space model algorithm operating on queries and documents in the same language. Further, our results are better than previous results in the literature. Hermes R. Freitas-Junior, Berthier A. Ribeiro-Neto, Rodrigo de Freitas Vale, Alberto H. F. Laender, Luciano R. S. de Lima

Automatic web news extraction using tree edit distanceabstractThe Web poses itself as the largest data repository ever available in the history of humankind. Major efforts have been made in order to provide efficient access to relevant information within this huge repository of data. Although several techniques have been developed to the problem of Web data extraction, their use is still not spread, mostly because of the need for high human intervention and the low quality of the extraction results. In this paper, we present a domain-oriented approach to Web data extraction and discuss its application to automatically extracting news from Web sites. Our approach is based on a highly efficient tree structure analysis that produces very effective results. We have tested our approach with several important Brazilian on-line news sites and achieved very precise results, correctly extracting 87.71% of the news in a set of 4088 pages distributed among 35 different sites. | 2002 | Web-DL: an experience in building digital libraries from the webabstractThe Web contains a huge volume of information, almost all unstructured and, therefore, difficult to manage. In Digital Libraries, however, information is explicitly organized, described, and managed. In this paper, we propose an architecture that allows the construction of digital libraries from the Web, using standard protocols and archival technologies, and incorporating powerful digital library and data extraction tools, thus benefiting from the breadth of the Web contents, but supporting services and organization available in digital libraries. The proposed architecture was applied to the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, providing an important first step toward rapid construction of large DLs from the Web, as well as a large-scale solution for interoperability between independent digital libraries. | 2002 | Searching web databases by structuring keyword-based queriesabstractOn-line information services have become widespread in the Web nowadays. However, Web users are non-specialized and have a great variety of interests. Thus, interfaces for Web databases must be simple and uniform. In this paper we present an approach, based on Bayesian networks, for querying Web databases using keywords only. According to this approach, the user inputs a query through a simple search-box interface. From the input query, one or more plausible structured queries are derived and submitted to Web databases. The results are then retrieved and presented to the user as ranked answers. Our approach reduces the complexity of existing on-line interfaces and offers a solution to the problem of querying several distinct Web databases with a single interface. The applicability of the proposed approach was demonstrated by experimental results with 3 databases, obtained with a prototype search system that implements it. We have found that from 77% to 95% of the time, one of the top three resulting structured queries is the proper one. Further, when the user selects one of these three top queries for processing, the ranked answers present average precision figures from 60% to about 100%. | 2001 | Bootstrapping for Example-Based Data ExtractionabstractThe effortless generation of wrappers for Web data sources is a crucial task if proper access to the huge amount of semi-structured data on the Web is to be granted. In particular, the development of strategies for wrapper generation based on user-given examples is currently one of the most promising research directions in Web data extraction. In this paper we show how to use a pre-existing data repository to automatically generate examples and allow full automated example-based data extraction. To demonstrate the feasibility of our approach we provide a number of results obtained from experiments we carried out and discuss how our ideas can be used to improve extraction rates and for providing resilience and adaptiveness for example-based generated wrappers. | 2001 | Storing Semistructured Data in Relational DatabasesabstractThis paper presents an approach to storing semistructured data in relational databases. We focus on semistructured data as extracted from Web pages by a tool called DEBYE (Data Extraction By Example), and organized according to its data model, the DEByE Object Model (DEByEOM). The approach presented here consists in representing the structure of the objects extracted by DEByE by a relational schema and populating the corresponding database accordingly. We also show how to retrieve such objects by automatically transforming high-level query specifications (query patterns) into SQL queries that are executed over the relational database. Experiments results carried out to evaluate our approach are also described. Karine V. Magalhães, Alberto H. F. Laender, Altigran S. da Silva

An experimental study in automatically categorizing medical documentsabstractIn this article, we evaluate the retrieval performance of an algorithm that automatically categorizes medical documents. The categorization, which consists in assigning an International Code of Disease (ICD) to the medical document under examination, is based on well-known information retrieval techniques. The algorithm, which we proposed, operates in a fully automatic mode and requires no supervision or training data. Using a database of 20,569 documents, we verify that the algorithm attains levels of average precision in the 70–80% range for category coding and in the 60–70% range for subcategory coding. We also carefully analyze the case of those documents whose categorization is not in accordance with the one provided by the human specialists. The vast majority of them represent cases that can only be fully categorized with the assistance of a human subject (because, for instance, they require specific knowledge of a given pathology). For a slim fraction of all documents (0.77% for category coding and 1.4% for subcategory coding), the algorithm makes assignments that are clearly incorrect. However, this fraction corresponds to only one-fourth of the mistakes made by the human specialists. Berthier A. Ribeiro-Neto, Alberto H. F. Laender, Luciano R. S. de Lima

| 2000 | A Knowledge-Based Approach to Cooperative Relational Database QueryingabstractWe present in this paper an approach to providing cooperativeness in database querying using artificial intelligence techniques. The main focus is a cooperative interface that assists nonexperienced and casual users in extracting useful answers from a relational database. Our approach relies on an architecture that comprises two knowledge bases which store rules that describe the application domain and guide the process of query formulation and answering. A subset of SQL is used for expressing queries, and the cooperative interface relieves the user from knowing its full syntax and the structure of the database. José Luís Braga, Alberto H. F. | 1999 | Extracting Semi-Structured Data Through ExamplesabstractIn this paper, we describe an innovative approach to extracting semi-structured data from Web sources. The idea is to collect a couple of example objects from the user and to use this information to extract new objects from new pages or texts. To perform the extraction of new objects, we introduce a bottom-up extration strategy and, through experimentation, demonstrate that it works quite effectively with distinct Web sources, even if only a few examples are provided by the user.
