2006 Securing the Borealis Data Stream Engine
abstract
As data stream management systems (DSMSs) become more and more popular, there is an increasing need to protect such systems from adversaries. In this paper we present an approach to secure DSMSs. We propose a general security framework and an access control model to secure DSMSs. We implement our framework into an existing data stream management system and show that our approach not only works, by protecting the system from major security threats, but also has little impact on the overall system performance

2006 Operator Allocation in Borealis with Integrated Sensor Network Query Processors
abstract
Today, Sensor Network Query Processors (SNQPs) are being integrated with Data Stream Management Systems (DSMSs). Due to the query capabilities of SNQPs, query processing can be extended from the DSMS into the sensor network. The problem then is to decide which operators should be allocated to the SNQP rather than being processed in the DSMS. This paper presents a first solution to this problem. Operators are classified as movable or not movable. Next, a QoS-based rating model, a two-stage neighborhood function browsing through the set of possible operator allocations, and an optimization algorithm using heuristics are introduced. Finally, it is shown how the operator allocation process fits into the Borealis optimization.

2006 Data Stream Query Optimization Across System Boundaries of Server and Sensor Network
abstract
One of the most important input providers for data stream management systems (DSMSs) is a sensor network. Such a network can have query functionality offered as a sensor network query processor (SNQP). Then some of the data stream operators can be executed in the DSMS as well as in the SNQP. This paper addresses the problem of finding the optimal solution. It shows first steps like the moving of operators and the modification of the epoch duration. The primary goal is to prolong the lifetime of the sensor network. A QoS-based goal function is introduced, and the optimization process is explained. It has been implemented with Borealis and TinyDB. Some preliminary results from the ongoing evaluation are given.

2000 Enabling Hypermedia Videos in Multimedia Database Systems Coupled with Realtime Media Servers
abstract
The integrated management of standard structured data and time-dependent data is still too complex to be covered by a single system. So, there will be distinct systems such as multimedia DBMS and media servers for e.g., video data, each doing only what it can do best. However, some functions desired by users and applications necessarily involve both systems. A prime candidate for this is the use of hypermedia link anchors in continuous media. The idea behind this approach is to enhance the client software to improve the interplay between structured data in the database (hypermedia structures and metadata) and the video stream. On initiating the playout of the video, the client receives a list of anchors from the MMDBS and organizes them in local structures. It also receives a handle for the video to be played out and uses it to contact the media server. The overall architecture and the role of the different kinds of systems are shown. Query and update processing are distributed over the different kinds of servers.
