2025 Dynamic Region Ownership for Concurrency Safety
abstract
The ways in which the components of a program interact with each other in a concurrent setting can be considerably more complex than in a sequential setting. The core problem is unrestricted shared mutable state. An alternative to unrestricted shared mutable state is to restrict the sharing using Ownership. Ownership can turn what would have been a race into a deterministic failure that can be explained to the programmer. However, Ownership has predominantly taken place in statically typed languages. In this paper, we explore retrofitting an existing dynamically typed programming language with an ownership model based on regions. Our core aim is to provide safe concurrency, that is, the ownership model should provide deterministic dynamic failures of ownership that can be explained to the programmer. We present a dynamic model of ownership that provides ownership of groups objects called regions. We provide dynamic enforcement of our region discipline, which we have implemented in a simple interpreter that provides a Pythonlike syntax and semantics, and report on our first steps into integrating it into an existing language, Python.

2020 Dynamic pattern matching with Python
abstract
Pattern matching allows programs both to extract specific information from complex data types, as well as to branch on the structure of data and thus apply specialized actions to different forms of data. Originally designed for strongly typed functional languages with algebraic data types, pattern matching has since been adapted for object-oriented and even dynamic languages. This paper discusses how pattern matching can be included in the dynamically typed language Python in line with existing features that support extracting values from sequential data structures.

1993 Structured Multimedia Authoring
abstract
We present the user interface to the CMIF authoring environment for constructing and playing multimedia presentations. The CMIF authoring environment supports a rich hypermedia document model allowing structure-based composition of multimedia presentations and the specification of synchronization constraints between constituent media items. An author constructs a multimedia presentation in terms of its structure and additional synchronization constraints, from which the CMIF player derives the precise timing information for the presentation. We discuss the advantages of a structured approach to authoring multimedia, and describe the facilities in the CMIF authoring environment for supporting this approach. The authoring environment presents three main views of a multimedia presentation: the hierarchy view is used for manipulating and viewing a presentation's hierarchical structure; the channel view is used for managing logical resources and specifying and viewing precise timing constraints; and the player for playing the presentation. We present the authoring environment in terms of a short example: constructing a walking tour of Amsterdam.
