| 2020 | Analysing installation scenarios of Debian packagesabstractAbstract The Debian distribution includes more than 28 thousand maintainer scripts, almost all of them are written in Posix shell. These scripts are executed with root privileges at installation, update, and removal of a package, which make them critical for system maintenance. While Debian policy provides guidance for package maintainers producing the scripts, few tools exist to check the compliance of a script to it. We report on the application of a formal verification approach based on symbolic execution to find violations of some non-trivial properties required by Debian policy in maintainer scripts. We present our methodology and give an overview of our toolchain. We obtained promising results: our toolchain is effective in analysing a large set of Debian maintainer scripts and it pointed out over 150 policy violations that lead to reports (more than half already fixed) on the Debian Bug Tracking system. | 2018 | Morbig: a static parser for POSIX shellabstractThe POSIX shell language defies conventional wisdom of compiler construction on several levels: The shell language was not designed for static parsing, but with an intertwining of syntactic analysis and execution by expansion in mind. Token recognition cannot be specified by regular expressions, lexical analysis depends on the parsing context and the evaluation context, and the shell grammar given in the specification is ambiguous. Besides, the unorthodox design choices of the shell language fit badly in the usual specification languages used to describe other programming languages. This makes the standard usage of LEX and YACC as a pipeline inadequate for the implementation of a parser for POSIX shell. Yann Régis-Gianas, Nicolas Jeannerod, Ralf Treinen |

| 2015 | Mining Component Repositories for Installability IssuesabstractComponent repositories play an increasingly relevant role in software life-cycle management, from software distribution to end-user, to deployment and upgrade management. Software components shipped via such repositories are equipped with rich metadata that describe their relationship (e.g., Dependencies and conflicts) with other components. In this practice paper we show how to use a tool, distcheck, that uses component metadata to identify all the components in a repository that cannot be installed (e.g., Due to unsatisfiable dependencies), provides detailed information to help developers understanding the cause of the problem, and fix it in the repository. We report about detailed analyses of several repositories: the Debian distribution, the OPAM package collection, and Drupal modules. In each case, distcheck is able to efficiently identify not installable components and provide valuable explanations of the issues. Our experience provides solid ground for generalizing the use of distcheck to other component repositories. | 2014 | Automated synthesis and deployment of cloud applicationsabstractComplex networked applications are assembled by connecting software components distributed across multiple machines. Building and deploying such systems is a challenging problem which requires a significant amount of expertise: the system architect must ensure that all component dependencies are satisfied, avoid conflicting components, and add the right amount of component replicas to account for quality of service and fault-tolerance. In a cloud environment, one also needs to minimize the virtual resources provisioned upfront, to reduce the cost of operation. Once the full architecture is designed, it is necessary to correctly orchestrate the deployment phase, to ensure all components are started and connected in the right order. | 2012 | Why do software packages conflict?abstractDetermining whether two or more packages cannot be installed together is an important issue in the quality assurance process of package-based distributions. Unfortunately, the sheer number of different configurations to test makes this task particularly challenging, and hundreds of such incompatibilities go undetected by the normal testing and distribution process until they are later reported by a user as bugs that we call “conflict defects”. We performed an extensive case study of conflict defects extracted from the bug tracking systems of Debian and Red Hat. According to our results, conflict defects can be grouped into five main categories. We show that with more detailed package meta-data, about 30 % of all conflict defects could be prevented relatively easily, while another 30 % could be found by targeted testing of packages that share common resources or characteristics. These results allow us to make precise suggestions on how to prevent and detect conflict defects in the future. Cyrille Artho, Kuniyasu Suzaki, Roberto Di Cosmo, Ralf Treinen, Stefano Zacchiroli |

| 2006 | Managing the Complexity of Large Free and Open Source Package-Based Software DistributionsabstractThe widespread adoption of free and open source software (FOSS) in many strategic contexts of the information technology society has drawn the attention on the issues regarding how to handle the complexity of assembling and managing a huge number of (packaged) components in a consistent and effective way. FOSS distributions (and in particular GNU/Linux-based ones) have always provided tools for managing the tasks of installing, removing and upgrading the (packaged) components they were made of While these tools provide a (not always effective) way to handle these tasks on the client side, there is still a lack of tools that could help the distribution editors to maintain, on the server side, large and high-quality distributions. In this paper we present our research whose main goal is to fill this gap: we show our approach, the tools we have developed and their application with experimental results. Our contribution provides an effective and automatic way to support distribution editors in handling those issues that were, until now, mostly addressed using ad-hoc tools and manual techniques Fabio Mancinelli, Jaap Boender, Roberto Di Cosmo, Jérôme Vouillon, Berke Durak, Xavier Leroy, Ralf Treinen |

| 2002 | The first-order theory of subtyping constraintsabstractWe investigate the first-order of subtyping constraints. We show that the first-order theory of non-structural subtyping is undecidable, and we show that in the case where all constructors are either unary or nullary, the first-order theory is decidable for both structural and non-structural subtyping. The decidability results are shown by reduction to a decision problem on tree automata. This work is a step towards resolving long-standing open problems of the decidability of entailment for non-structural subtyping. | 1998 | The First-Order Theory of Ordering Constraints over Feature TreesabstractThe system FT/sub /spl les// of ordering constraints over feature trees has been introduced as an extension of the system FT of equality constraints over feature trees. We investigate the first-order theory of FT/sub /spl les// and its fragments, both over finite trees and over possibly infinite trees. We prove that the first-order theory of FT/sub /spl les// is undecidable, in contrast to the first-order theory of FT which is well-known to be decidable. We determine the complexity of the entailment problem of FT/sub /spl les// with existential quantification to be PSPACE-complete, by proving its equivalence to the inclusion problem of non-deterministic finite automata. Our reduction from the entailment problem to the inclusion problem is based on a new algorithm that, given an existential formula of FT/sub /spl les//, computes a finite automaton which accepts all its logic consequences.
