Image retrieval with query-adaptive hashingabstractHashing-based approximate nearest-neighbor search may well realize scalable content-based image retrieval. The existing semantic-preserving hashing methods leverage the labeled data to learn a fixed set of semantic-aware hash functions. However, a fixed hash function set is unable to well encode all semantic information simultaneously, and ignores the specific user's search intention conveyed by the query. In this article, we propose a query-adaptive hashing method which is able to generate the most appropriate binary codes for different queries. Specifically, a set of semantic-biased discriminant projection matrices are first learnt for each of the semantic concepts, through which a semantic-adaptable hash function set is learnt via a joint sparsity variable selection model. At query time, we further use the sparsity representation procedure to select the most appropriate hash function subset that is informative to the semantic information conveyed by the query. Extensive experiments over three benchmark image datasets well demonstrate the superiority of our proposed query-adaptive hashing method over the state-of-the-art ones in terms of retrieval accuracy. | 2011 | Towards Optimal Discriminating Order for Multiclass ClassificationabstractIn this paper, we investigate how to design an optimized discriminating order for boosting multiclass classification. The main idea is to optimize a binary tree architecture, referred to as Sequential Discriminating Tree (SDT), that performs the multiclass classification through a hierarchical sequence of coarse-to-fine binary classifiers. To infer such a tree architecture, we employ the constrained large margin clustering procedure which enforces samples belonging to the same class to locate at the same side of the hyper plane while maximizing the margin between these two partitioned class subsets. The proposed SDT algorithm has a theoretic error bound which is shown experimentally to effectively guarantee the generalization performance. Experiment results indicate that SDT clearly beats the state-of-the-art multiclass classification algorithms. | 2011 | Next photo please: towards visually consistent sequential photo browsingabstractSequential photo browsing has become the most important function in the desktop and online image repository management systems, where existing systems typically display the photos in default orders such as the lexicographic order of the photo filename or the chronological order of the photo taken time. However, these browsing orders, especially when the browsing speed is fast, ignore the vision persistency characteristic of human visual systems, which results in inconsistent visual experience for photo viewers. To address this issue, we construct a photo relationship graph based on various kinds of visual features that complementarily reflect human visual perception. Then the seeking of visually consistent photo browsing sequence is cast into a traveling salesman problem which seeks an optimal path with minimum visual distance within the graph structure. Experiment results on sequential browsing of Flickr photo groups indicate that the proposed method clearly beats the other sequential photo browsing methods in terms of visual consistency. | 2011 | Semantic point detectorabstractLocal features are the building blocks of many visual systems, and local point detector is usually the first component for local feature extraction. Existing local point detector are designed with target for matching and it may not perform well when applied in image content representation. Actually many existing studies demonstrate that the simple dense sampling strategy can achieve better performance than many local point detection methods in image classification tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel point detector named semantic point detector, which detects a set of semantically meaningful patches from each image and yields more compact and complete image representation. It is learned from an set of images with concepts from a large ontology. We conduct extensive experiments based on the proposed detector, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. | 2011 | Assemble New Object Detector With Few ExamplesabstractLearning a satisfactory object detector generally requires sufficient training data to cover the most variations of the object. In this paper, we show that the performance of object detector is severely degraded when training examples are limited. We propose an approach to handle this issue by exploring a set of pretrained auxiliary detectors for other categories. By mining the global and local relationships between the target object category and auxiliary objects, a robust detector can be learned with very few training examples. We adopt the deformable part model proposed by Felzenszwalb and simultaneously explore the root and part filters in the auxiliary object detectors under the guidance of the few training examples from the target object category. An iterative solution is introduced for such a process. The extensive experiments on the PASCAL VOC 2007 challenge data set show the encouraging performance of the new detector assembled from those related auxiliary detectors. | 2011 | Semi-Automatic Tagging of Photo Albums via Exemplar Selection and Tag InferenceabstractAs one of the emerging Web 2.0 activities, tagging becomes a popular approach to manage personal media data, such as photo albums. A dilemma in tagging behavior is the users' manual efforts and the tagging accuracy: exhaustively tagging all photos in an album is labor-intensive and time-consuming, and simply entering tags for the whole album leads to unsatisfying results. In this paper, we propose a semi-automatic tagging scheme that aims to facilitate users in photo album tagging. The scheme is able to achieve a good trade-off between manual efforts and tagging accuracy as well as to adjust tagging performance according to the user's customization. For a given album, it first selects a set of representative exemplars for manual tagging via a temporally consistent affinity propagation algorithm, and the tags of the rest of the photos are automatically inferred. Then a constrained affinity propagation algorithm is applied to select a new set of exemplars for manual tagging in an incremental manner, based on which the performance of the tag inference in the previous round can be estimated. If the results are not satisfying enough, a further round of exemplar selection and tag inference will be implemented. This process repeats until satisfactory tagging results are achieved, and users can also stop the process at any time. Experimental results on real-world Flickr photo albums have demonstrated the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed scheme. Dong Liu 0001, Meng Wang 0001, Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Image Retagging Using Collaborative Tag PropagationabstractPhoto sharing websites such as Flickr host a massive amount of social images with user-provided tags. However, these tags are often imprecise and incomplete, which essentially limits tag-based image indexing and related applications. To tackle this issue, we propose an image retagging scheme that aims at refining the quality of the tags. The retagging process is formulated as a multiple graph-based multi-label learning problem, which simultaneously explores the visual content of the images, semantic correlation of the tags as well as the prior information provided by users. Different from classical single graph-based multi-label learning algorithms, the proposed algorithm propagates the information of each tag along an individual tag-specific similarity graph, which reflects the particular relationship among the images with respect to the specific tag and at the same time the propagations of different tags interact with each other in a collaborative way with an extra tag similarity graph. In particular, we present a robust tag-specific visual sub-vocabulary learning algorithm for the construction of those tag-specific graphs. Experimental results on two benchmark Flickr image datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed image retagging scheme. We also show the remarkable performance improvements brought by retagging in the task of image ranking. Dong Liu 0001, Shuicheng Yan, Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Tag Tagging: Towards More Descriptive Keywords of Image ContentabstractTags have been demonstrated to be effective and efficient for organizing and searching social image content. However, these human-provided keywords are far from a comprehensive description of the image content, which limits their effectiveness in tag-based image search. In this paper, we propose an automatic scheme called tag tagging to supplement semantic image descriptions by associating a group of property tags with each existing tag. For example, an initial tag “tiger” may be further tagged with “white”, “stripes”, and “bottom-right” along three tag properties: color, texture, and location, respectively. In this way, the descriptive ability of the existing tags can be greatly enhanced. In the proposed scheme, a lazy learning approach is first applied to estimate the corresponding image regions of each initial tag, and then a set of property tags that correspond to six properties, including location, color, texture, size, shape, and dominance, are derived for each initial tag. These tag properties enable much more precise image search especially when certain tag properties are included in the query. The results of the empirical evaluation show that tag properties remarkably boost the performance of social image retrieval. Kuiyuan Yang, Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, Meng Wang 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Large-scale robust visual codebook constructionabstractThe web-scale image retrieval system demands a large-scale visual codebook, which is difficult to be generated by the commonly adopted K-means vector quantization due to the applicability issue. While approximate K-means is proposed to scale up the visual codebook construction it needs to employ a high-precision approximate nearest neighbor search in the assignment step and is difficult to converge, which limits its scalability. In this paper, we propose an improved approximate K-means, by leveraging the assignment information in the history, namely the previous iterations, to improve the assignment precision. By further randomizing the employed approximate nearest neighbor search in each iteration, the proposed algorithm can improve the assignment precision conceptually similarly as the randomized k-d trees, while nearly no additional cost is introduced. The algorithm can be proved to be convergent and we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm improves the quality of the generated visual codebook as well as the scalability experimentally and analytically. | 2010 | Image retaggingabstractOnline social media repositories such as Flickr and Zooomr allow users to manually annotate their images with freely-chosen tags, which are then used as indexing keywords to facilitate image search and other applications. However, these tags are frequently imprecise and incomplete, though they are provided by human beings, and many of them are almost only meaningful for the image owners (such as the name of a dog). Thus there is still a gap between these tags and the actual content of the images, and this significantly limits tag-based applications, such as search and browsing. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a social image "retagging" scheme that aims at assigning images with better content descriptors. The refining process, including denoising and enriching, is formulated as an optimization framework based on the consistency between "visual similarity" and "semantic similarity" in social images, that is, the visually similar images tend to have similar semantic descriptors, and vice versa. An effective iterative bound optimization algorithm is applied to learn the improved tag assignment. In addition, as many tags are intrinsically not closely-related to the visual content of the images, we employ knowledge based method to differentiate visual content related tags from unrelated ones and then constrain the tagging vocabulary of our automatic algorithm within the content related tags. Finally, to improve the coverage of the tags, we further enrich the tag set with appropriate synonyms and hypernyms based on an external knowledge base. Experimental results on a Flickr image collection demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach. We will also show the remarkable performance improvements brought by retagging via two applications, i.e., tag-based search and automatic annotation. | 2010 | Unified tag analysis with multi-edge graphabstractImage tags have become a key intermediate vehicle to organize, index and search the massive online image repositories. Extensive research has been conducted on different yet related tag analysis tasks, e.g., tag refinement, tag-to-region assignment, and automatic tagging. In this paper, we propose a new concept of multi-edge graph, through which a unified solution is derived for the different tag analysis tasks. Specifically, each vertex of the graph is first characterized by a unique image. Then each image is encoded as a region bag with multiple image segmentations, and the thresholding of the pairwise similarities between regions naturally constructs the multiple edges between each vertex pair. The unified tag analysis is then generally described as the tag propagation between a vertex and its edges, as well as between all edges cross the entire image repository. We develop a core vertex-vs-edge tag equation unique for multi-edge graph to unify the image/vertex tag(s) and region-pair/edge tag(s). Finally, unified tag analysis is formulated as a constrained optimization problem, where the objective function characterizing the cross-patch tag consistency is constrained by the core equations for all vertex pairs, and the cutting plane method is used for efficient optimization. Extensive experiments on various tag analysis tasks over three widely used benchmark datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed unified solution. | 2010 | Tagging tagsabstractSocial image sharing websites like Flickr have successfully motivated users around the world to annotate images with tags, which greatly facilitate search and organization of social image content. These tag properties enable much more precise image search especially when certain tag properties are included in the query. | 2010 | Image Classification With Kernelized Spatial-ContextabstractThe goal of image classification is to classify a collection of unlabeled images into a set of semantic classes. Many methods have been proposed to approach this goal by leveraging visual appearances of local patches in images. However, the spatial context between these local patches also provides significant information to improve the classification accuracy. Traditional spatial contextual models, such as two-dimensional hidden Markov model, attempt to construct one common model for each image category to depict the spatial structures of the images in this class. However due to large intra-class variances in an image category, one single model has difficulties in representing various spatial contexts in different images. In contrast, we propose to construct a prototype set of spatial contextual models by leveraging the kernel methods rather than only one model. Such an algorithm combines the advantages of rich representation ability of spatial contextual models as well as the powerful classification ability of kernel method. In particular, we propose a new distance measure between different spatial contextual models by integrating joint appearance-spatial image features. Such a distance measure can be efficiently computed in a recursive formulation that scales well to image size. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches. Guo-Jun Qi, Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, Yong Rui, Jinhui Tang 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Towards a Relevant and Diverse Search of Social ImagesabstractRecent years have witnessed the great success of social media websites. Tag-based image search is an important approach to accessing the image content on these websites. However, the existing ranking methods for tag-based image search frequently return results that are irrelevant or not diverse. This paper proposes a diverse relevance ranking scheme that is able to take relevance and diversity into account by exploring the content of images and their associated tags. First, it estimates the relevance scores of images with respect to the query term based on both the visual information of images and the semantic information of associated tags. Then, we estimate the semantic similarities of social images based on their tags. Based on the relevance scores and the similarities, the ranking list is generated by a greedy ordering algorithm which optimizes average diverse precision, a novel measure that is extended from the conventional average precision. Comprehensive experiments and user studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. We also apply the scheme for web image search reranking, and it is shown that the diversity of search results can be enhanced while maintaining a comparable level of relevance. | 2009 | Multiplicative nonnegative graph embeddingabstractIn this paper, we study the problem of nonnegative graph embedding, originally investigated in [14] for reaping the benefits from both nonnegative data factorization and the specific purpose characterized by the intrinsic and penalty graphs [13]. Our contributions are two-fold. On the one hand, we present a multiplicative iterative procedure for nonnegative graph embedding, which significantly reduces the computational cost compared with the iterative procedure in [14] involving the matrix inverse calculation of an M-matrix. On the other hand, the nonnegative graph embedding framework is expressed in a more general way by encoding each datum as a tensor of arbitrary order, which brings a group of byproducts, e.g., nonnegative discriminative tensor factorization algorithm, with admissible time and memory cost. Extensive experiments compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms on nonnegative data factorization, graph embedding, and tensor representation demonstrate the algorithmic properties in computation speed, sparsity, discriminating power, and robustness to realistic image occlusions. | 2009 | Multi-label sparse coding for automatic image annotationabstractIn this paper, we present a multi-label sparse coding framework for feature extraction and classification within the context of automatic image annotation. First, each image is encoded into a so-called supervector, derived from the universal Gaussian Mixture Models on orderless image patches. Then, a label sparse coding based subspace learning algorithm is derived to effectively harness multi-label information for dimensionality reduction. Finally, the sparse coding method for multi-label data is proposed to propagate the multi-labels of the training images to the query image with the sparse ℓ1reconstruction coefficients. Extensive image annotation experiments on the Corel5k and Corel30k databases both show the superior performance of the proposed multi-label sparse coding framework over the state-of-the-art algorithms. | 2009 | Large scale natural image classification by sparsity explorationabstractWe consider in this paper the problem of large scale natural image classification. As the explosion and popularity of images in the Internet, there are increasing attentions to utilize millions of or even billions of these images for helping image related research. Beyond the opportunities brought by unlimited data, a great challenge is how to design more effective classification methods under these large scale scenarios. Most of existing attempts are based on k-nearest-neighbor method. However, in spite of the optimistic performance in some tasks, this strategy still suffers from that, one single fixed global parameter k is not robust for different object classes from different semantic levels. In this paper, we propose an alternative method, called ℓ1-nearest-neighbor, based on a sparse representation computed by ℓ1-minimization. We first treat a testing sample as a sparse linear combination of all training samples, and then consider the related samples as the nearest neighbors of the testing sample. Finally, we classify the testing sample based on the majority of these neighbors' classes. We conduct extensive experiments on a 1.6 million natural image database on different semantic levels defined based on WordNet, which demonstrate that the proposed ℓ1-nearest-neighbor algorithm outperforms k-nearest-neighbor in two aspects: 1) the robustness of parameter selection for different semantic levels, and 2) the discriminative capability for large scale image classification task. | 2009 | Boost search relevance for tag-based social image retrievalabstractSocial media sharing Web sites like Flickr allow users to annotate images with free tags, which greatly facilitate social image search and browsing. However, currently tag-based image search on Flickr does not provide the option of relevance-based ranking, i.e., the search results cannot be ranked according to their relevance levels with respect to the query tag, and this has limited the effectiveness of tagbased search. In this paper, we propose a relevance-based ranking scheme for social image search, aiming to automatically rank images according to their relevance to the query tag. It integrates both the visual consistency between images and the semantic correlation between tags in a unified optimization framework. We propose an iterative method to solve the optimization problem, and the relevance-based ranking can thus be accomplished. | 2009 | Tag quality improvement for social imagesabstractOnline social media sharing Web sites like Flickr allow users to manually annotate images with tags, which can facilitate image search and organization. However, the tags provided by users are often imprecise and incomplete, which severely limits the application of tags to image search and browse. In this paper, we propose a scheme to improve poorly annotated tags associated with social images. Two properties are exploited and integrated in an unified optimization framework: (1) consistency between visual and semantic similarities, where the semantic similarity is estimated using tags; (2) compatibility of tags before and after improvement, since the initial user provided tags carry valuable information. An iterative bound optimization method is derived to solve the optimization problem. Experimental results on Flickr dataset show that the proposed method can significantly improve the quality of tags. Dong Liu 0001, Meng Wang 0001, Linjun Yang, Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Active tagging for image indexingabstractConcept labeling and ontology-free tagging are the two typical manners of image annotation. Despite extensive research efforts have been dedicated to labeling, currently automatic image labeling algorithms are still far from satisfactory, and meanwhile manual labeling is rather labor-intensive. In contrast with labeling, tagging works in a free way and therefore it has better user experience for annotators. In this paper, we introduce an active tagging scheme that combines human and computer to assign tags to images. The scheme works in an iterative way. In each round, the most informative images are selected for manual tagging, and the remained images can be annotated by a tag prediction component. We have integrated multiple criteria for sample selection, including ambiguity, citation, and diversity. Experiments are conducted on different datasets and empirical results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Kuiyuan Yang, Meng Wang 0001, HongJiang Zhang

An efficient sparse metric learning in high-dimensional space via l1-penalized log-determinant regularizationabstractThis paper proposes an efficient sparse metric learning algorithm in high dimensional space via an l1-penalized log-determinant regularization. Compare to the most existing distance metric learning algorithms, the proposed algorithm exploits the sparsity nature underlying the intrinsic high dimensional feature space. This sparsity prior of learning distance metric serves to regularize the complexity of the distance model especially in the "less example number p and high dimension d" setting. Theoretically, by analogy to the covariance estimation problem, we find the proposed distance learning algorithm has a consistent result at rate O (√m2 log d)/n) to the target distance matrix with at most m nonzeros per row. Moreover, from the implementation perspective, this l1-penalized log-determinant formulation can be efficiently optimized in a block coordinate descent fashion which is much faster than the standard semi-definite programming which has been widely adopted in many other advanced distance learning algorithms. We compare this algorithm with other state-of-the-art ones on various datasets and competitive results are obtained. Guo-Jun Qi, Jinhui Tang 0001, Zhengjun Zha, Tat-Seng Chua, HongJiang Zhang

Smart batch tagging of photo albumsabstractAs one of the emerging Web 2.0 activities, tagging becomes a popular approach to manage personal media data, such as photo albums. However, exhaustively tagging all photos in an album is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task, and simply entering tags for the whole album will significantly degrade the tagging accuracy. In this paper, we propose a smart batch tagging scheme that aims at facilitating users in album tagging. For a given album, it selects a set of representative exemplars for manual tagging, where the number of exemplars is dependent on the content of the photos. Then the tags of the rest photos are automatically inferred. In this way, the number of tagged photos is significantly reduced and we will show that high tagging accuracy can still be maintained. Therefore, a good trade-off between manual efforts and tagging performance can be achieved. Experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed approach. | 2009 | Learning semantic distance from community-tagged media collectionabstractThis paper proposes a novel semantic-aware distance met-ric for images by mining multimedia data on the Internet, in particular, web images and their associated tags. As well known, a proper distance metric between images is a key ingredient in many realistic web image retrieval engines, as well many image understanding techniques. In this pa-per, we attempt to mine a novel distance metric from the web images by integrating their visual content as well as the associated user tags. Different from many existing dis-tance metric learning algorithms which utilize the dissimilar or similar information between images pixels or features in signal level, the proposed scheme also takes the associated user-input tags into consideration. The visual content of images is also leveraged to respect an intuitive assumption that the visual similar images ought to have a smaller dis-tance. A semi-definite programming is formulated to encode the above two aspects of criteria to learn the distance met-ric and we show such an optimization problem can be effi-ciently solved with a closed-form solution. We evaluate the proposed algorithm on two datasets. One is the benchmark Corel dataset and the other is a real-world dataset crawled from the image sharing website Flickr. By comparison with other existing distance learning algorithms, competitive re-sults are obtained by the proposed algorithm in experiments. Guo-Jun Qi, Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Unsupervised Learning of Probabilistic Object Models (POMs) for Object Classification, Segmentation, and Recognition Using Knowledge PropagationabstractWe present a method to learn probabilistic object models (POMs) with minimal supervision, which exploit different visual cues and perform tasks such as classification, segmentation, and recognition. We formulate this as a structure induction and learning task and our strategy is to learn and combine elementary POMs that make use of complementary image cues. We describe a novel structure induction procedure, which uses knowledge propagation to enable POMs to provide information to other POMs and "teach them" (which greatly reduces the amount of supervision required for training and speeds up the inference). In particular, we learn a POM-IP defined on Interest Points using weak supervision [1], [2] and use this to train a POM-mask, defined on regional features, which yields a combined POM that performs segmentation/localization. This combined model can be used to train POM-edgelets, defined on edgelets, which gives a full POM with improved performance on classification. We give detailed experimental analysis on large data sets for classification and segmentation with comparison to other methods. Inference takes five seconds while learning takes approximately four hours. In addition, we show that the full POM is invariant to scale and rotation of the object (for learning and inference) and can learn hybrid objects classes (i.e., when there are several objects and the identity of the object in each image is unknown). Finally, we show that POMs can be used to match between different objects of the same category, and hence, enable objects recognition. Yuanhao Chen, Long Zhu, Alan L. Yuille, HongJiang Zhang

Two-Dimensional Multilabel Active Learning with an Efficient Online Adaptation Model for Image ClassificationabstractConventional active learning dynamically constructs the training set only along the sample dimension. While this is the right strategy in binary classification, it is suboptimal for multilabel image classification. We argue that for each selected sample, only some effective labels need to be annotated while others can be inferred by exploring the label correlations. The reason is that the contributions of different labels to minimizing the classification error are different due to the inherent label correlations. To this end, we propose to select sample-label pairs, rather than only samples, to minimize a multilabel Bayesian classification error bound. We call it two-dimensional active learning because it considers both the sample dimension and the label dimension. Furthermore, as the number of training samples increases rapidly over time due to active learning, it becomes intractable for the offline learner to retrain a new model on the whole training set. So we develop an efficient online learner to adapt the existing model with the new one by minimizing their model distance under a set of multilabel constraints. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method are evaluated on two benchmark data sets and a realistic image collection from a real-world image sharing Web site-Corbis. | 2008 | Unsupervised learning of probabilistic object models (POMs) for object classification, segmentation and recognitionabstractWe present a new unsupervised method to learn unified probabilistic object models (POMs) which can be applied to classification, segmentation, and recognition. We formulate this as a structure learning task and our strategy is to learn and combine basic POM's that make use of complementary image cues. Each POM has algorithms for inference and parameter learning, but: (i) the structure of each POM is unknown, and (ii) the inference and parameter learning algorithm for a POM may be impractical without additional information. We address these problems by a novel structure induction procedure which uses knowledge propagation to enable POM's to provide information to other POM's and "teach them" (which greatly reduced the amount of supervision required for training). In particular, we learn a POM-IP defined on interest points using weak supervision [1, 2] and use this to train a POM- mask, defined on regional features, which yields a combined POM which performs segmentation/localization. This combined model can be used to train POM-edgelets, defined on edgelets, which gives a full POM with improved performance on classification. We give detailed experimental analysis on large datasets which show that the full POM is invariant to scale and rotation of the object (for learning and inference) and performs inference rapidly. In addition, we show that we can apply POM's to learn objects classes (i.e. when there are several objects and the identity of the object in each image is unknown). | 2008 | Two-Dimensional Active Learning for image classificationabstractIn this paper, we propose a two-dimensional active learning scheme and show its application in image classification. Traditional active learning methods select samples only along the sample dimension. While this is the right strategy in binary classification, it is sub-optimal for multi-label classification. In multi-label classification, we argue that, for each selected sample, only a part of more effective labels are necessary to be annotated while others can be inferred by exploring the correlations among the labels. The reason is that the contributions of different labels to minimizing the classification error are different due to the inherent label correlations. To this end, we propose to select sample-label pairs, rather than only samples, to minimize a multi-label Bayesian classification error bound. This new active learning strategy not only considers the sample dimension but also the label dimension, and we call it Two-Dimensional Active Learning (2DAL). We also show that the traditional active learning formulation is a special case of 2DAL when there is only one label. Extensive experiments conducted on two real-world applications show that the 2DAL significantly outperforms the best existing approaches which did not take label correlation into account. | 2008 | A joint appearance-spatial distance for kernel-based image categorizationabstractThe goal of image categorization is to classify a collection of unlabeled images into a set of predefined classes to support semantic-level image retrieval. The distance measures used in most existing approaches either ignored the spatial structures or used them in a separate step. As a result, these distance measures achieved only limited success. To address these difficulties, in this paper, we propose a new distance measure that integrates joint appearance-spatial image features. Such a distance measure is computed as an upper bound of an information-theoretic discrimination, and can be computed efficiently in a recursive formulation that scales well to image size. In addition, the upper bound approximation can be further tightened via adaption learning from a universal reference model. Extensive experiments on two widely-used data sets show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches. | 2008 | Learning to reduce the semantic gap in web image retrieval and annotationabstractWe study in this paper the problem of bridging the semantic gap between low-level image features and high-level semantic concepts, which is the key hindrance in content-based image retrieval. Piloted by the rich textual information of Web images, the proposed framework tries to learn a new distance measure in the visual space, which can be used to retrieve more semantically relevant images for any unseen query image. The framework differentiates with traditional distance metric learning methods in the following ways. 1) A ranking-based distance metric learning method is proposed for image retrieval problem, by optimizing the leave-one-out retrieval performance on the training data. 2) To be scalable, millions of images together with rich textual information have been crawled from the Web to learn the similarity measure, and the learning framework particularly considers the indexing problem to ensure the retrieval efficiency. 3) To alleviate the noises in the unbalanced labels of images and fully utilize the textual information, a Latent Dirichlet Allocation based topic-level text model is introduced to define pairwise semantic similarity between any two images. The learnt distance measure can be directly applied to applications such as content-based image retrieval and search-based image annotation. Experimental results on the two applications in a two million Web image database show both the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework. Changhu Wang, Lei Zhang 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Reconstruction and Recognition of Tensor-Based Objects With Concurrent Subspaces AnalysisabstractPrincipal Components Analysis (PCA) has traditionally been utilized with data expressed in the form of 1-D vectors, but there exists much data such as gray-level images, video sequences, Gabor-filtered images and so on, that are intrinsically in the form of second or higher order tensors. For representations of image objects in their intrinsic form and order rather than concatenating all the object data into a single vector, we propose in this paper a new optimal object reconstruction criterion with which the information of a high-dimensional tensor is represented as a much lower dimensional tensor computed from projections to multiple concurrent subspaces. In each of these subspaces, correlations with respect to one of the tensor dimensions are reduced, enabling better object reconstruction performance. Concurrent subspaces analysis (CSA) is presented to efficiently learn these subspaces in an iterative manner. In contrast to techniques such as PCA which vectorize tensor data, CSA's direct use of data in tensor form brings an enhanced ability to learn a representative subspace and an increased number of available projection directions. These properties enable CSA to outperform traditional algorithms in the common case of small sample sizes, where CSA can be effective even with only a single sample per class. Extensive experiments on images of faces and digital numbers encoded as second or third order tensors demonstrate that the proposed CSA outperforms PCA-based algorithms in object reconstruction and object recognition. | 2008 | Correlative multilabel video annotation with temporal kernelsabstractAutomatic video annotation is an important ingredient for semantic-level video browsing, search and navigation. Much attention has been paid to this topic in recent years. These researches have evolved through two paradigms. In the first paradigm, each concept is individually annotated by a pre-trained binary classifier. However, this method ignores the rich information between the video concepts and only achieves limited success. Evolved from the first paradigm, the methods in the second paradigm add an extra step on the top of the first individual classifiers to fuse the multiple detections of the concepts. However, the performance of these methods can be degraded by the error propagation incurred in the first step to the second fusion one. In this article, another paradigm of the video annotation method is proposed to address these problems. It simultaneously annotates the concepts as well as model correlations between them in one step by the proposed Correlative Multilabel (CML) method, which benefits from the compensation of complementary information between different labels. Furthermore, since the video clips are composed by temporally ordered frame sequences, we extend the proposed method to exploit the rich temporal information in the videos. Specifically, a temporal-kernel is incorporated into the CML method based on the discriminative information between Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) that are learned from the videos. We compare the performance between the proposed approach and the state-of-the-art approaches in the first and second paradigms on the widely used TRECVID data set. | 2007 | Learning query-biased web page summarizationabstractQuery-biased Web page summarization is the summarization of a Web page reflecting the relevance of it to a specific query. It plays an important role in search results representation of Web search engines. In this paper, we propose a learning-based query-biased Web page summarization method. The summarization problem is solved within the typical sentence selection framework. Different from existing Web page summarization methods that use page content or link context alone, both of them are considered as the sources of sentences in this work. Most of existing learning-based summarization methods treat summarization as a sentence classification problem and train a classifier to discriminate between extracted sentences and non-extracted sentences of all training documents. The basic assumption of these methods is that sentences from different documents are comparable with respect to the class information. In contrast to the classification scheme, a ranking scheme is introduced to rank extracted sentences higher than non-extracted sentences of each training document. The underlying assumption that sentences within a document are comparable is weaker and more reasonable than the assumption of classification-based scheme. Extensive results using intrinsic evaluation metrics gauge many aspects of the proposed method. Changhu Wang, Lei Zhang 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Concurrent Multiple Instance Learning for Image CategorizationabstractWe propose a new multiple instance learning (MIL) algorithm to learn image categories. Unlike existing MIL algorithms, in which the individual instances in a bag are assumed to be independent with each other, we develop concurrent tensors to explicitly model the inter-dependency between the instances to better capture image's inherent semantics. Rank-1 tensor factorization is then applied to obtain the label of each instance. Furthermore, we formulate the classification problem in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) to extend instance label prediction to the whole feature space. | 2007 | Content-Based Image Annotation RefinementabstractAutomatic image annotation has been an active research topic due to its great importance in image retrieval and management. However, results of the state-of-the-art image annotation methods are often unsatisfactory. Despite continuous efforts in inventing new annotation algorithms, it would be advantageous to develop a dedicated approach that could refine imprecise annotations. In this paper, a novel approach to automatically refining the original annotations of images is proposed. For a query image, an existing image annotation method is first employed to obtain a set of candidate annotations. Then, the candidate annotations are re-ranked and only the top ones are reserved as the final annotations. By formulating the annotation refinement process as a Markov process and defining the candidate annotations as the states of a Markov chain, a content-based image annotation refinement (CIAR) algorithm is proposed to re-rank the candidate annotations. It leverages both corpus information and the content feature of a query image. Experimental results on a typical Corel dataset show not only the validity of the refinement, but also the superiority of the proposed algorithm over existing ones. | 2007 | Transductive Inference with Hierarchical Clustering for Video AnnotationabstractIn this paper, we present a novel framework for video semantic detection based on transductive inference and hierarchical clustering, which directly focuses on predicting the available samples in a current unlabeled pool, instead of trying to build a classifier workable for any unavailable data. In this framework, a number of hierarchical clustering results are constructed from theentire video datasetcontaining both labeled and unlabeled examples. We aim to make the clusters aspureas possible, i.e., samples in a same cluster mostly have a same label. To furtherpurifythese hierarchical clustering results, an EM based cluster-tuning algorithm is iteratively employed. Based on these clustering results, several hypotheses are generated byprobability votingamong labeled samples in the obtained clusters. From these hypotheses, one of them is chosen according to theVapnik combined bound, and it is then applied to predict the labels of unlabeled samples. This selected transductive hypothesis, which is only interested in predicting the available unlabeled samples in test set rather than producing a general classifier like inductive inference learning, exploits the structure and distribution of the unlabeled pool to achieve a minimal test error bound. Thus it can have better generalization ability for video annotation both theoretically and experimentally. This is also shown by our experiment results. | 2007 | Correlative multi-label video annotationabstractAutomatically annotating concepts for video is a key to semantic-level video browsing, search and navigation. The research on this topic evolved through two paradigms. The first paradigm used binary classification to detect each individual concept in a concept set. It achieved only limited success, as it did not model the inherent correlation between concepts, e.g., urban and building. The second paradigm added a second step on top of the individual concept detectors to fuse multiple concepts. However, its performance varies because the errors incurred in the first detection step can propagate to the second fusion step and therefore degrade the overall performance. To address the above issues, we propose a third paradigm which simultaneously classifies concepts and models correlations between them in a single step by using a novel Correlative Multi-Label (CML) framework. We compare the performance between our proposed approach and the state-of-the-art approaches in the first and second paradigms on the widely used TRECVID data set. | 2007 | Graph Embedding and Extensions: A General Framework for Dimensionality ReductionabstractA large family of algorithms - supervised or unsupervised; stemming from statistics or geometry theory - has been designed to provide different solutions to the problem of dimensionality reduction. Despite the different motivations of these algorithms, we present in this paper a general formulation known as graph embedding to unify them within a common framework. In graph embedding, each algorithm can be considered as the direct graph embedding or its linear/kernel/tensor extension of a specific intrinsic graph that describes certain desired statistical or geometric properties of a data set, with constraints from scale normalization or a penalty graph that characterizes a statistical or geometric property that should be avoided. Furthermore, the graph embedding framework can be used as a general platform for developing new dimensionality reduction algorithms. By utilizing this framework as a tool, we propose a new supervised dimensionality reduction algorithm called marginal Fisher analysis in which the intrinsic graph characterizes the intraclass compactness and connects each data point with its neighboring points of the same class, while the penalty graph connects the marginal points and characterizes the interclass separability. We show that MFA effectively overcomes the limitations of the traditional linear discriminant analysis algorithm due to data distribution assumptions and available projection directions. | 2007 | Nonlinear Discriminant Analysis on Embedded ManifoldabstractTraditional manifold learning algorithms, such as ISOMAP, LLE, and Laplacian Eigenmap, mainly focus on uncovering the latent low-dimensional geometry structure of the training samples in an unsupervised manner where useful class information is ignored. Therefore, the derived low-dimensional representations are not necessarily optimal in discriminative capability. In this paper, we study the discriminant analysis problem by considering the nonlinear manifold structure of data space. To this end, firstly, a new clustering algorithm, called Intra-Cluster Balanced K-Means (ICBKM), is proposed to partition the samples into multiple clusters while ensure that there are balanced samples for the classes within each cluster; approximately, each cluster can be considered as a local patch on the embedded manifold. Then, the local discriminative projections for different clusters are simultaneously calculated by optimizing the global Fisher Criterion based on the cluster weighted data representation. Compared with traditional linear/kernel discriminant analysis (KDA) algorithms, our proposed algorithm has the following characteristics: 1) it essentially is a KDA algorithm with specific geometry-adaptive-kernel tailored to the specific data structure, in contrast to traditional KDA in which the kernel is fixed and independent to the data set; 2) it is approximately a locally linear while globally nonlinear discriminant analyzer; 3) it does not need to store the original samples for computing the low-dimensional representation of a new data; and 4) it is computationally efficient compared with traditional KDA when the sample number is large. The toy problem on artificial data demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm in deriving discriminative representations for problems with nonlinear classification hyperplane. The face recognition experiments on YALE and CMU PIE databases show that our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms linear discriminant analysis (LDA) as well as Mixture LDA, and has higher accuracy than KDA with traditional kernels Shuicheng Yan, Yuxiao Hu 0001, Dong Xu 0001, HongJiang Zhang, Benyu Zhang

Marginal Fisher Analysis and Its Variants for Human Gait Recognition and Content- Based Image RetrievalabstractDimensionality reduction algorithms, which aim to select a small set of efficient and discriminant features, have attracted great attention for human gait recognition and content-based image retrieval (CBIR). In this paper, we present extensions of our recently proposed marginal Fisher analysis (MFA) to address these problems. For human gait recognition, we first present a direct application of MFA, then inspired by recent advances in matrix and tensor-based dimensionality reduction algorithms, we present matrix-based MFA for directly handling 2-D input in the form of gray-level averaged images. For CBIR, we deal with the relevance feedback problem by extending MFA to marginal biased analysis, in which within-class compactness is characterized only by the distances between each positive sample and its neighboring positive samples. In addition, we present a new technique to acquire a direct optimal solution for MFA without resorting to objective function modification as done in many previous algorithms. We conduct comprehensive experiments on the USF HumanID gait database and the Corel image retrieval database. | 2007 | Multilinear Discriminant Analysis for Face RecognitionabstractThere is a growing interest in subspace learning techniques for face recognition; however, the excessive dimension of the data space often brings the algorithms into the curse of dimensionality dilemma. In this paper, we present a novel approach to solve the supervised dimensionality reduction problem by encoding an image object as a general tensor of second or even higher order. First, we propose a discriminant tensor criterion, whereby multiple interrelated lower dimensional discriminative subspaces are derived for feature extraction. Then, a novel approach, called k-mode optimization, is presented to iteratively learn these subspaces by unfolding the tensor along different tensor directions. We call this algorithm multilinear discriminant analysis (MDA), which has the following characteristics: 1) multiple interrelated subspaces can collaborate to discriminate different classes, 2) for classification problems involving higher order tensors, the MDA algorithm can avoid the curse of dimensionality dilemma and alleviate the small sample size problem, and 3) the computational cost in the learning stage is reduced to a large extent owing to the reduced data dimensions in k-mode optimization. We provide extensive experiments on ORL, CMU PIE, and FERET databases by encoding face images as second- or third-order tensors to demonstrate that the proposed MDA algorithm based on higher order tensors has the potential to outperform the traditional vector-based subspace learning algorithms, especially in the cases with small sample sizes. | 2007 | A Wonderful Three Years abstractThree years ago the author years ago was honored to take over the responsibility of Editor-In-Chief (EiC) of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. That was at a time that the Transactions, after seven years into running and under the leadership of three EiCs, had begun to emerge as a primary venue for multimedia professionals to publish high quality research works. Quickly and quietly, three years passed; the Transactions has established itself as the high impact forum of archival value in the multimedia community and in IEEE, in particular, with improved quality, increased readership and submissions, and expanded impact. The Transactions has indeed become the top choice among researchers, professors, graduate students and practitioners to read and publish the state of the art and high impact works. After a brief review of the accomplishments over the last three years the outgoing EiC welcomes the new Editor-in-Chief, Sheila Hemami (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Cornell University), whom he notes as a strong activist and seasoned researcher in our community. | 2007 | Clustering and searching WWW images using link and page layout analysisabstractDue to the rapid growth of the number of digital images on the Web, there is an increasing demand for an effective and efficient method for organizing and retrieving the available images. This article describes iFind, a system for clustering and searching WWW images. By using a vision-based page segmentation algorithm, a Web page is partitioned into blocks, and the textual and link information of an image can be accurately extracted from the block containing that image. The textual information is used for image indexing. By extracting the page-to-block, block-to-image, block-to-page relationships through link structure and page layout analysis, we construct an image graph. Our method is less sensitive to noisy links than previous methods like PageRank, HITS, and PicASHOW, and hence the image graph can better reflect the semantic relationship between images. Using the notion of Markov Chain, we can compute the limiting probability distributions of the images, ImageRanks, which characterize the importance of the images. The ImageRanks are combined with the relevance scores to produce the final ranking for image search. With the graph models, we can also use techniques from spectral graph theory for image clustering and embedding, or 2-D visualization. Some experimental results on 11.6 million images downloaded from the Web are provided in the article. Xiaofei He 0001, Deng Cai 0001, Ji-Rong Wen, Wei-Ying Ma, HongJiang Zhang

Semi-Supervised Kernel RegressionabstractInsufficiency of training data is a major obstacle in machine learning and data mining applications. Many different semi-supervised learning algorithms have been proposed to tackle this difficulty by leveraging a large amount of unlabeled data. However, most of them focus on semi-supervised classification. In this paper we propose a semi-supervised regression algorithm named semi-supervised kernel regression (SSKR). While classical kernel regression is only based on labeled examples, our approach extends it to all observed examples using a weighting factor to modulate the effect of unlabeled examples. Experimental results prove that SSKR significantly outperforms traditional kernel regression and graph-based semi-supervised regression methods. | 2006 | Image annotation refinement using random walk with restartsabstractImage annotation plays an important role in image retrieval and management. However, the results of the state-of-the-art image annotation methods are often unsatisfactory. Therefore, it is necessary to refine the imprecise annotations obtained by existing annotation methods. In this paper, a novel approach to automatically refine the original annotations of images is proposed. On the one hand, for Web images, textual information, e.g. file name and surrounding text, is used to retrieve a set of candidate annotations. On the other hand, for non-Web images that are lack of textual information, a relevance model-based algorithm using visual information is used to decide the candidate annotations. Then, candidate annotations are re-ranked and only the top ones are reserved as the final annotations. To re-rank the annotations, an algorithm using Random Walk with Restarts (RWR) is proposed to leverage both the corpus information and the original confidence information of the annotations. Experimental results on both non-Web images of Corel dataset and Web images of photo forum sites demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Changhu Wang, Lei Zhang 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Automatic video annotation by semi-supervised learning with kernel density estimationabstractInsufficiency of labeled training data is a major obstacle for automatically annotating large-scale video databases with semantic concepts. Existing semi-supervised learning algorithms based on parametric models try to tackle this issue by incorporating the information in a large amount of unlabeled data. However, they are based on a assumption that the assumed generative model is correct, which usually cannot be satisfied in automatic video annotation due to the large variations of video semantic concepts. In this paper, we propose a novel semi-supervised learning algorithm, named Semi Supervised Learning by Kernel Density Estimation (SSLKDE), which is based on a non-parametric method, and therefore the assumption is avoided. While only labeled data are utilized in the classical Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) approach, in SSLKDE both labeled and unlabeled data are leveraged to estimate class conditional probability densities based on an extended form of KDE. We also investigate the connection between SSLKDE and existing graph-based semi-supervised learning algorithms. Experiments prove that SSLKDE significantly outperforms existing supervised methods for video annotation. | 2006 | A flexible framework for key audio effects detection and auditory context inferenceabstractKey audio effects are those special effects that play critical roles in human's perception of an auditory context in audiovisual materials. Based on key audio effects, high-level semantic inference can be carried out to facilitate various content-based analysis applications, such as highlight extraction and video summarization. In this paper, a flexible framework is proposed for key audio effect detection in a continuous audio stream, as well as for the semantic inference of an auditory context. In the proposed framework, key audio effects and the background sounds are comprehensively modeled with hidden Markov models, and a Grammar Network is proposed to connect various models to fully explore the transitions among them. Moreover, a set of new spectral features are employed to improve the representation of each audio effect and the discrimination among various effects. The framework is convenient to add or remove target audio effects in various applications. Based on the obtained key effect sequence, a Bayesian network-based approach is proposed to further discover the high-level semantics of an auditory context by integrating prior knowledge and statistical learning. Evaluations on 12 h of audio data indicate that the proposed framework can achieve satisfying results, both on key audio effect detection and auditory context inference. | 2006 | Automatic mood detection and tracking of music audio signalsabstractMusic mood describes the inherent emotional expression of a music clip. It is helpful in music understanding, music retrieval, and some other music-related applications. In this paper, a hierarchical framework is presented to automate the task of mood detection from acoustic music data, by following some music psychological theories in western cultures. The hierarchical framework has the advantage of emphasizing the most suitable features in different detection tasks. Three feature sets, including intensity, timbre, and rhythm are extracted to represent the characteristics of a music clip. The intensity feature set is represented by the energy in each subband, the timbre feature set is composed of the spectral shape features and spectral contrast features, and the rhythm feature set indicates three aspects that are closely related with an individual's mood response, including rhythm strength, rhythm regularity, and tempo. Furthermore, since mood is usually changeable in an entire piece of classical music, the approach to mood detection is extended to mood tracking for a music piece, by dividing the music into several independent segments, each of which contains a homogeneous emotional expression. Preliminary evaluations indicate that the proposed algorithms produce satisfactory results. On our testing database composed of 800 representative music clips, the average accuracy of mood detection achieves up to 86.3%. We can also on average recall 84.1% of the mood boundaries from nine testing music pieces. Lie Lu, Dan Liu 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Without the full semantic understanding of image content, the model formulates the attention objects as a Markov random field (MRF) by integrating computational visual attention mechanisms with attention object growing techniques. Furthermore, we describe the MRF by a Gibbs random field with an energy function. The minimization of the energy function provides a practical way to obtain attention objects. | 2006 | Photo2Video - A System for Automatically Converting Photographic Series Into VideoabstractA novel method for browsing and sharing a single and series of photographs is presented, which can be regarded as a system exploring a new medium type between photograph and video. The scheme exploits the rich content embedded in a single photograph, as well as in a photographic series. Based on studying the typical process of a viewer's attention to variations on objects or regions in an image, a photograph can be converted into a motion clip by simulating camera motions on it. For a selected photographic series, an appropriate set of key-frames are determined for each photograph based on content analyses. And then camera motion pattern is selected for each photograph to generate a corresponding motion photograph clip. Finally, the final output video is rendered by connecting a series of motion photograph clips with specific transitions based on the content of the images on either side of the transition. Also, each motion photograph clip is aligned with the selected incidental music based on music content analysis. As the system, named Photo2Video, generates motion photographs in a fully automatic or semi-automatic manner, it can be used for increasing efficiency in many applications, such as automatic walkthroughs of photograph galleries, motion photographs on website, electronic greeting cards, and personalized Karaoke Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, Lie Lu, HongJiang Zhang |

Human Gait Recognition With Matrix RepresentationabstractHuman gait is an important biometric feature. It can be perceived from a great distance and has recently attracted greater attention in video-surveillance-related applications, such as closed-circuit television. We explore gait recognition based on a matrix representation in this paper. First, binary silhouettes over one gait cycle are averaged. As a result, each gait video sequence, containing a number of gait cycles, is represented by a series of gray-level averaged images. Then, a matrix-based unsupervised algorithm, namely coupled subspace analysis (CSA), is employed as a preprocessing step to remove noise and retain the most representative information. Finally, a supervised algorithm, namely discriminant analysis with tensor representation, is applied to further improve classification ability. This matrix-based scheme demonstrates a much better gait recognition performance than state-of-the-art algorithms on the standard USF HumanID Gait database. | 2006 | Orthogonal Laplacianfaces for Face RecognitionabstractFollowing the intuition that the naturally occurring face data may be generated by sampling a probability distribution that has support on or near a submanifold of ambient space, we propose an appearance-based face recognition method, called orthogonal Laplacianface. Our algorithm is based on the locality preserving projection (LPP) algorithm, which aims at finding a linear approximation to the eigenfunctions of the Laplace Beltrami operator on the face manifold. However, LPP is nonorthogonal, and this makes it difficult to reconstruct the data. The orthogonal locality preserving projection (OLPP) method produces orthogonal basis functions and can have more locality preserving power than LPP. Since the locality preserving power is potentially related to the discriminating power, the OLPP is expected to have more discriminating power than LPP. Experimental results on three face databases demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm. Deng Cai 0001, Xiaofei He 0001, Jiawei Han 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Generalized Manifold-Ranking-Based Image RetrievalabstractIn this paper, we propose a general transductive learning framework named generalized manifold-ranking-based image retrieval (gMRBIR) for image retrieval. Comparing with an existing transductive learning method named MRBIR [12], our method could work well whether or not the query image is in the database; thus, it is more applicable for real applications. Given a query image, gMRBIR first initializes a pseudo seed vector based on neighborhood relationship and then spread its scores via manifold ranking to all the unlabeled images in the database. Furthermore, in gMRBIR, we also make use of relevance feedback and active learning to refine the retrieval result so that it converges to the query concept as fast as possible. Systematic experiments on a general-purpose image database consisting of 5,000 Corel images demonstrate the superiority of gMRBIR over state-of-the-art techniques. | 2005 | Mapping Low-Level Features to High-Level Semantic Concepts in Region-Based Image RetrievalabstractIn this paper, a novel offline supervised learning method is proposed to map low-level visual features to high-level semantic concepts for region-based image retrieval. The contributions of this paper lie in three folds. (1) For each semantic concept, a set of low-level tokens are extracted from the segmented regions of training images. Those tokens capture the representative information for describing the semantic meaning of that concept; (2) a set of posteriors are generated based on the low-level tokens through pairwise classification, which denote the probabilities of images belonging to the semantic concepts. The posteriors are treated as high-level features that connect images with high-level semantic concepts. Long-term relevance feedback learning is incorporated to provide the supervisory information needed in the above offline learning process, including the concept information and the relevant training set for each concept; (3) an integrated algorithm is implemented to combine two kinds of information for retrieval: the information from the offline feature-to-concept mapping process and the high-level semantic information from the long-term learned memory. Experimental evaluation on 10,000 images proves the effectiveness of our method. Kap Luk Chan, Mingjing Li, HongJiang Zhang

A Unified Optimization Based Learning Method for Image RetrievalabstractIn this paper, an optimization based learning method is proposed for image retrieval from graph model point of view. Firstly, image retrieval is formulated as a regularized optimization problem, which simultaneously considers the constraints from low-level feature, online relevance feedback and offline semantic information. Then, the global optimal solution is developed in both closed form and iterative form, providing that the latter converges to the former. The proposed method is unified in the senses that 1) it makes use of the information from various aspects in a global optimization manner so that the retrieval performance might be maximally improved; 2) it provides a natural way to support two typical query scenarios in image retrieval. The proposed method has a solid mathematical ground. Systematic experimental results on a general-purpose image database demonstrate that it achieves significant improvements over existing methods. | 2005 | Concurrent Subspaces AnalysisabstractA representative subspace is significant for image analysis, while the corresponding techniques often suffer from the curse of dimensionality dilemma. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm, called concurrent subspaces analysis (CSA), to derive representative subspaces by encoding image objects as 2/sup nd/ or even higher order tensors. In CSA, an original higher dimensional tensor is transformed into a lower dimensional one using multiple concurrent subspaces that characterize the most representative information of different dimensions, respectively. Moreover, an efficient procedure is provided to learn these subspaces in an iterative manner. As analyzed in this paper, each sub-step of CSA takes the column vectors of the matrices, which are acquired from the k-mode unfolding of the tensors, as the new objects to be analyzed, thus the curse of dimensionality dilemma can be effectively avoided. The extensive experiments on the 3/sup rd/ order tensor data, simulated video sequences and Gabor filtered digital number image database show that CSA outperforms principal component analysis in terms of both reconstruction and classification capability. | 2005 | Discriminant Analysis with Tensor RepresentationabstractIn this paper, we present a novel approach to solving the supervised dimensionality reduction problem by encoding an image object as a general tensor of 2nd or higher order. First, we propose a discriminant tensor criterion (DTC), whereby multiple interrelated lower-dimensional discriminative subspaces are derived for feature selection. Then, a novel approach called k-mode cluster-based discriminant analysis is presented to iteratively learn these subspaces by unfolding the tensor along different tensor dimensions. We call this algorithm discriminant analysis with tensor representation (DATER), which has the following characteristics: 1) multiple interrelated subspaces can collaborate to discriminate different classes; 2) for classification problems involving higher-order tensors, the DATER algorithm can avoid the curse of dimensionality dilemma and overcome the small sample size problem; and 3) the computational cost in the learning stage is reduced to a large extent owing to the reduced data dimensions in generalized eigenvalue decomposition. We provide extensive experiments by encoding face images as 2nd or 3rd order tensors to demonstrate that the proposed DATER algorithm based on higher order tensors has the potential to outperform the traditional subspace learning algorithms, especially in the small sample size cases. | 2005 | Graph Embedding: A General Framework for Dimensionality ReductionabstractIn the last decades, a large family of algorithms - supervised or unsupervised; stemming from statistic or geometry theory - have been proposed to provide different solutions to the problem of dimensionality reduction. In this paper, beyond the different motivations of these algorithms, we propose a general framework, graph embedding along with its linearization and kernelization, which in theory reveals the underlying objective shared by most previous algorithms. It presents a unified perspective to understand these algorithms; that is, each algorithm can be considered as the direct graph embedding or its linear/kernel extension of some specific graph characterizing certain statistic or geometry property of a data set. Furthermore, this framework is a general platform to develop new algorithm for dimensionality reduction. To this end, we propose a new supervised algorithm, Marginal Fisher Analysis (MFA), for dimensionality reduction by designing two graphs that characterize the intra-class compactness and inter-class separability, respectively. MFA measures the intra-class compactness with the distance between each data point and its neighboring points of the same class, and measures the inter-class separability with the class margins; thus it overcomes the limitations of traditional Linear Discriminant Analysis algorithm in terms of data distribution assumptions and available projection directions. The toy problem on artificial data and the real face recognition experiments both show the superiority of our proposed MFA in comparison to LDA. | 2005 | Coupled Kernel-Based Subspace LearningabstractIt was prescriptive that an image matrix was transformed into a vector before the kernel-based subspace learning. In this paper, we take the kernel discriminant analysis (KDA) algorithm as an example to perform kernel analysis on 2D image matrices directly. First, each image matrix is decomposed as the product of two orthogonal matrices and a diagonal one by using singular value decomposition; then an image matrix is expanded to be of higher or even infinite dimensions by applying the kernel trick on the column vectors of the two orthogonal matrices; finally, two coupled discriminative kernel subspaces are iteratively learned for dimensionality reduction by optimizing the Fisher criterion measured by Frobenius norm. The derived algorithm, called coupled kernel discriminant analysis (CKDA), effectively utilizes the underlying spatial structure of objects and the discriminating information is encoded in two coupled kernel subspaces respectively. The experiments on real face databases compared with KDA and Fisherface validate the effectiveness of CKDA. Shuicheng Yan, Dong Xu 0001, Lei Zhang 0001, Benyu Zhang, HongJiang Zhang

Neighborhood Preserving EmbeddingabstractRecently there has been a lot of interest in geometrically motivated approaches to data analysis in high dimensional spaces. We consider the case where data is drawn from sampling a probability distribution that has support on or near a submanifold of Euclidean space. In this paper, we propose a novel subspace learning algorithm called neighborhood preserving embedding (NPE). Different from principal component analysis (PCA) which aims at preserving the global Euclidean structure, NPE aims at preserving the local neighborhood structure on the data manifold. Therefore, NPE is less sensitive to outliers than PCA. Also, comparing to the recently proposed manifold learning algorithms such as Isomap and locally linear embedding, NPE is defined everywhere, rather than only on the training data points. Furthermore, NPE may be conducted in the original space or in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space into which data points are mapped. This gives rise to kernel NPE. Several experiments on face database demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. Xiaofei He 0001, Deng Cai 0001, Shuicheng Yan, HongJiang Zhang

A Probabilistic Semantic Model for Image Annotation and Multi-Modal Image RetrievaabstractThis paper addresses automatic image annotation problem and its application to multi-modal image retrieval. The contribution of our work is three-fold. (1) We propose a probabilistic semantic model in which the visual features and the textual words are connected via a hidden layer which constitutes the semantic concepts to be discovered to explicitly exploit the synergy among the modalities. (2) The association of visual features and textual words is determined in a Bayesian framework such that the confidence of the association can be provided. (3) Extensive evaluation on a large-scale, visually and semantically diverse image collection crawled from Web is reported to evaluate the prototype system based on the model. In the proposed probabilistic model, a hidden concept layer which connects the visual feature and the word layer is discovered by fitting a generative model to the training image and annotation words through an Expectation-Maximization (EM) based iterative learning procedure. The evaluation of the prototype system on 17,000 images and 7,736 automatically extracted annotation words from crawled Web pages for multi-modal image retrieval has indicated that the proposed semantic model and the developed Bayesian framework are superior to a state-of-the-art peer system in the literature. In this paper, we present an efficient approach to video mosaicing based on motion analysis with investigating two important issues that significantly affect the performance of mosaicing. First, given a video shot, a method based on motion entropy analysis is introduced to determine whether the visual content in a shot or video segment is suited to be represented by a mosaic. The second is to decide which subset of frames in the shot is the best to be selected for efficient and effective mosaicing by constructing a global motion path. Based on mosaic, sports video is mined by the method with prior knowledge and without prior knowledge. | 2005 | Subspace Clustering and Label Propagation for Active Feedback in Image RetrievalabstractIn recent years, relevance feedback has been studied extensively as a way to improve performance of content-based image retrieval (CBIR). However, since users are usually unwilling to provide many feedbacks, the insufficiency of the training samples limited the success of relevance feedback. To tackle this problem, we propose two coupled algorithms: (i) overlapped subspace clustering to select representative images for user’s feedback; and (ii) multi-subspace label propagation to include unlabeled data in the training process. As these two algorithms are both working on sub feature spaces of the image database, they can not only deal with the insufficient training samples but also well capture the user’s attention during the retrieval process. Experimental results on a large database of general-purposed images demonstrated the high effectiveness of our proposed algorithms. | 2005 | Learning No-Reference Quality Metric by ExamplesabstractIn this paper, a novel learning based method is proposed for No-Reference image quality assessment. Instead of examining the exact prior knowledge for the given type of distortion and finding a suitable way to represent it, our method aims to directly get the quality metric by means of learning. At first, some training examples are prepared for both high-quality and low-quality classes; then a binary classifier is built on the training set; finally the quality metric of an un-labeled example is denoted by the extent to which it belongs to these two classes. Different schemes to acquire examples from a given image, to build the binary classifier and to model the quality metric are proposed and investigated. While most existing methods are tailored for some specific distortion type, the proposed method might provide a general solution for No-Reference image quality assessment. Experimental results on JPEG and JPEG2000 compressed images validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Hanghang Tong, Mingjing Li, HongJiang Zhang, Changshui Zhang, Jingrui He, Wei-Ying Ma

A Generic Framework for Semantic Sports Video Analysis Using Dynamic Bayesian NetworksabstractAutomatic detection of semantic events in sport videos is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a multimodal multilayer statistical inference framework for semantic sports video analysis using Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBNs). Based on this framework, three instances including factorial hierarchical hidden Markov model (FHHMM), coupled hierarchical hidden Markov model (CHHMM), and product hierarchical hidden Markov model (PHHMM), are constructed and compared. Play-break detection in soccer videos is used as a testbed with hierarchical hidden Markov model (HHMM) as a baseline. Experimental results indicate the superior capability of the PHHMM, because it not only effectively models dynamic interactions between different modalities, but also sufficiently utilizes context constraints in multilayer structures. | 2005 | Realistic 3D Face Modeling by Fusing Multiple 2D ImagesabstractIn this paper, we propose a fully automatic and efficient algorithm for realistic 3D face reconstruction by fusing multiple 2D face images. Firstly, an efficient multi-view 2D face alignment algorithm is utilized to localize the facial points of the face images; and then the intrinsic shape and texture models are inferred by the proposed Syncretized Shape Model (SSM) and Syncretized Texture Model (STM), respectively. Compared with other related works, our proposed algorithm has the following characteristics: 1) the inferred shape and texture are more realistic owing to the constraints and co-enhancement among the multiple images; 2) it is fully automatic, without any user interaction; and 3) the shape and pose parameter estimation is efficient via EM approach and unit quaternion based pose representation, and is also robust as a result of the dynamic correspondence approach. | 2005 | Parallel Image Matrix Compression for Face RecognitionabstractThe canonical face recognition algorithm Eigenface and Fisherface are both based on one dimensional vector representation. However, with the high feature dimensions and the small training data, face recognition often suffers from the curse of dimension and the small sample problem. Recent research [4] shows that face recognition based on direct 2D matrix representation, i.e. 2DPCA, obtains better performance than that based on traditional vector representation. However, there are three questions left unresolved in the 2DPCA algorithm: I ) what is the meaning of the eigenvalue and eigenvector of the covariance matrix in 2DPCA; 2) why 2DPCA can outperform Eigenface; and 3) how to reduce the dimension after 2DPCA directly. In this paper, we analyze 2DPCA in a different view and proof that is 2DPCA actually a "localized" PCA with each row vector of an image as object. With this explanation, we discover the intrinsic reason that 2DPCA can outperform Eigenface is because fewer feature dimensions and more samples are used in 2DPCA when compared with Eigenface. To further reduce the dimension after 2DPCA, a two-stage strategy, namely parallel image matrix compression (PIMC), is proposed to compress the image matrix redundancy, which exists among row vectors and column vectors. The exhaustive experiment results demonstrate that PIMC is superior to 2DPCA and Eigenface, and PIMC+LDA outperforms 2DPC+LDA and Fisherface. | 2005 | Face Recognition Using LaplacianfacesabstractWe propose an appearance-based face recognition method called the Laplacianface approach. By using Locality Preserving Projections (LPP), the face images are mapped into a face subspace for analysis. Different from Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) which effectively see only the Euclidean structure of face space, LPP finds an embedding that preserves local information, and obtains a face subspace that best detects the essential face manifold structure. The Laplacianfaces are the optimal linear approximations to the eigenfunctions of the Laplace Beltrami operator on the face manifold. In this way, the unwanted variations resulting from changes in lighting, facial expression, and pose may be eliminated or reduced. Theoretical analysis shows that PCA, LDA, and LPP can be obtained from different graph models. We compare the proposed Laplacianface approach with Eigenface and Fisherface methods on three different face data sets. Experimental results suggest that the proposed Laplacianface approach provides a better representation and achieves lower error rates in face recognition. | 2005 | Video summarization and scene detection by graph modelingabstractWe propose a unified approach for video summarization based on the analysis of video structures and video highlights. Two major components in our approach are scene modeling and highlight detection. Scene modeling is achieved by normalized cut algorithm and temporal graph analysis, while highlight detection is accomplished by motion attention modeling. In our proposed approach, a video is represented as a complete undirected graph and the normalized cut algorithm is carried out to globally and optimally partition the graph into video clusters. The resulting clusters form a directed temporal graph and a shortest path algorithm is proposed to efficiently detect video scenes. The attention values are then computed and attached to the scenes, clusters, shots, and subshots in a temporal graph. As a result, the temporal graph can inherently describe the evolution and perceptual importance of a video. In our application, video summaries that emphasize both content balance and perceptual quality can be generated directly from a temporal graph that embeds both the structure and attention information. | 2005 | An HMM-based framework for video semantic analysisabstractVideo semantic analysis is essential in video indexing and structuring. However, due to the lack of robust and generic algorithms, most of the existing works on semantic analysis are limited to specific domains. In this paper, we present a novel hidden Markove model (HMM)-based framework as a general solution to video semantic analysis. In the proposed framework, semantics in different granularities are mapped to a hierarchical model space, which is composed of detectors and connectors. In this manner, our model decomposes a complex analysis problem into simpler subproblems during the training process and automatically integrates those subproblems for recognition. The proposed framework is not only suitable for a broad range of applications, but also capable of modeling semantics in different semantic granularities. Additionally, we also present a new motion representation scheme, which is robust to different motion vector sources. The applications of the proposed framework in basketball event detection, soccer shot classification, and volleyball sequence analysis have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed framework on video semantic analysis. | 2005 | A memory learning framework for effective image retrievalabstractMost current content-based image retrieval systems are still incapable of providing users with their desired results. The major difficulty lies in the gap between low-level image features and high-level image semantics. To address the problem, this study reports a framework for effective image retrieval by employing a novel idea of memory learning. It forms a knowledge memory model to store the semantic information by simply accumulating user-provided interactions. A learning strategy is then applied to predict the semantic relationships among images according to the memorized knowledge. Image queries are finally performed based on a seamless combination of low-level features and learned semantics. One important advantage of our framework is its ability to efficiently annotate images and also propagate the keyword annotation from the labeled images to unlabeled images. The presented algorithm has been integrated into a practical image retrieval system. Experiments on a collection of 10,000 general-purpose images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Junwei Han 0001, King Ngi Ngan, Mingjing Li, HongJiang Zhang

A unified framework for image retrieval using keyword and visual featuresabstractIn this paper, a unified image retrieval framework based on both keyword annotations and visual features is proposed. In this framework, a set of statistical models are built based on visual features of a small set of manually labeled images to represent semantic concepts and used to propagate keywords to other unlabeled images. These models are updated periodically when more images implicitly labeled by users become available through relevance feedback. In this sense, the keyword models serve the function of accumulation and memorization of knowledge learned from user-provided relevance feedback. Furthermore, two sets of effective and efficient similarity measures and relevance feedback schemes are proposed for query by keyword scenario and query by image example scenario, respectively. Keyword models are combined with visual features in these schemes. In particular, a new, entropy-based active learning strategy is introduced to improve the efficiency of relevance feedback for query by keyword. Furthermore, a new algorithm is proposed to estimate the keyword features of the search concept for query by image example. It is shown to be more appropriate than two existing relevance feedback algorithms. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. | 2005 | A generic framework of user attention model and its application in video summarizationabstractDue to the information redundancy of video, automatically extracting essential video content is one of key techniques for accessing and managing large video library. In this paper, we present a generic framework of a user attention model, which estimates the attentions viewers may pay to video contents. As human attention is an effective and efficient mechanism for information prioritizing and filtering, user attention model provides an effective approach to video indexing based on importance ranking. In particular, we define viewer attention through multiple sensory perceptions, i.e. visual and aural stimulus as well as partly semantic understanding. Also, a set of modeling methods for visual and aural attentions are proposed. As one of important applications of user attention model, a feasible solution of video summarization, without fully semantic understanding of video content as well as complex heuristic rules, is implemented to demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness, and generality of the user attention model. The promising results from the user study on video summarization indicate that the user attention model is an alternative way to video understanding. | 2004 | Towards unsupervised attention object extraction by integrating visual attention and object growingabstractContent-related functionalities of image/video applications call for efficient tools that can automatically extract meaningful objects from images. However, traditional methods generally fail to capture objects of user interest because they totally neglect human visual attention perception. Aiming to address this problem, this study proposes a generic model for unsupervised extraction of viewer's attention objects from color images. We formulate the attention objects as a Markov random field (MRF). Then, the MRF is expressed in the form of a Gibbs random field with an energy function. The energy minimization that integrates visual attention and object growing provides a practical way to obtain attention objects. Due to the limited understanding of the human vision system, most of the existing methods focus on measuring to what extent the image has been distorted. Although most of the cameras have the red-eye reduction mode, the result reality is that no on-camera system is completely effective. In this paper, we propose a fully automatic approach to detecting and correcting red-eyes in digital images. In order to detect red-eyes in a picture, a heuristic yet efficient algorithm is first adopted to detect a group of candidate red regions and then an eye classifier is utilized to confirm whether each candidate region is a human eye. Thereafter, for each detected redeye, we can correct it by the correction algorithm. In case that a red-eye cannot be detected automatically, another algorithm is also provided to detect red-eyes manually with the user's interaction by clicking on an eye. | 2004 | Manifold-ranking based image retrievalabstractIn this paper, we propose a novel transductive learning framework named manifold-ranking based image retrieval (MRBIR). Given a query image, MRBIR first makes use of a manifold ranking algorithm to explore the relationship among all the data points in the feature space, and then measures relevance between the query and all the images in the database accordingly, which is different from traditional similarity metrics based on pair-wise distance. In relevance feedback, if only positive examples are available, they are added to the query set to improve the retrieval result; if examples of both labels can be obtained, MRBIR discriminately spreads the ranking scores of positive and negative examples, considering the asymmetry between these two types of images. Furthermore, three active learning methods are incorporated into MRBIR, which select images in each round of relevance feedback according to different principles, aiming to maximally improve the ranking result. | 2004 | Learning an image manifold for retrievalabstractWe consider the problem of learning a mapping function from low-level feature space to high-level semantic space. Under the assumption that the data lie on a submanifold embedded in a high dimensional Euclidean space, we propose a relevance feedback scheme which is naturally conducted only on the image manifold in question rather than the total ambient space. While images are typically represented by feature vectors in Rn, the natural distance is often different from the distance induced by the ambient space Rn. The geodesic distances on manifold are used to measure the similarities between images. However, when the number of data points is small, it is hard to discover the intrinsic manifold structure. Based on user interactions in a relevance feedback driven query-by-example system, the intrinsic similarities between images can be accurately estimated. We then develop an algorithmic framework to approximate the optimal mapping function by a Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network. The semantics of a new image can be inferred by the RBF neural network. Experimental results show that our approach is effective in improving the performance of content-based image retrieval systems. | 2004 | Efficient propagation for face annotation in family albumsabstractIn this paper, we propose and investigate a new user scenario for face annotation, in which users are allowed to multi-select a group of photographs and assign names to these photographs. The system will then attempt to propagate names from photograph level to face level, i.e. to infer the correspondence between name and face. Given the face similarity measure which combines methodologies from face recognition and content-based image retrieval, we formulate name propagation as an optimization problem. We define the objective function as the sum of similarities between each pair of faces of the same individual in different photographs, and propose an iterative optimization algorithm to infer the optimal correspondence. To make the propagation result reliable, a reject scheme is adopted to reject those with low confidence scores. | 2004 | Adaptive Content Delivery on Mobile Internet across Multiple Form FactorabstractSummary form only given. In the PC+ era, a variety of new mobile devices, such as Web-enabled watch, Smartphone, Pocket PC, Tablet PC, etc, are making a population boom. As most of current documents and multimedia contents are designed for applications on desktop PC, we are facing a big challenge - the problem of multiple form factors resulted from the diverse set of emerging new devices. For example, browsing conventional Web pages on Pocket PC is a pain. Browsing a large picture on Smartphone (e.g. picture messaging application) is no different to a thumbnail view, even though the users are now able to capture high-resolution pictures on the latest models of camera-equipped cell phones. Furthermore, enterprise software applications have been aiming to take the advantage of ubiquitous network connection by mobile Internet to increase the productivity of information workers. As the current document-related applications are highly desktop-PC focused, to unleash the power of mobile Internet in the PC+ era, we need to innovate more aggressively and develop a new generation of document and content technologies to cope with the problem of multiple form factors. In this paper, we briefly review the past research and development on adapting multimedia content for heterogeneous device capability, user context and network environment, including the MPEG-7 standard. Then, we focus on the challenge of limited display and input capability in mobile devices, we believe that in order to successfully tackle this challenge, we need to (a) develop new content representation which is scalable and adaptable, (b) develop content analysis techniques to structure content for the new representation, (c) develop corresponding rendering algorithms and innovative user interfaces to maximize the information throughput of the content on small devices, and (d) make content adaptation service part of mobile Internet architecture. We also introduce some specific research works that we have been conducting towards this direction in Microsoft Research Asia. These works include Scalable Web Document which is a new Web content representation for various display sizes, Smart Picture which uses image attention model to facilitate the browsing of large pictures on mobile devices, and Media Companion which uses proxy augmentation on the edge of mobile Internet to construct a content service overlay for dynamic adaptation and value-added services. | 2004 | Audio textures: theory and applicationsabstractIn this paper, we introduce a new audio medium, called audio texture, as a means of synthesizing long audio stream according to a given short example audio clip. The example clip is first analyzed to extract its basic building patterns. An audio stream of arbitrary length is then synthesized using a sequence of extracted building patterns. The patterns can be varied in the synthesis process to add variations to the generated sound to avoid simple repetition. Audio textures are useful in applications such as background music, lullabies, game music, and screen saver sounds. We also extend this idea to audio texture restoration, or constrained audio texture synthesis for restoring the missing part in an audio clip. It is also useful in many applications such as error concealment for audio/music delivery with packets loss on the Internet. Novel methods are proposed for unconstrained and constrained audio texture synthesis. Preliminary results are provided for evaluation. Lie Lu, Wenyin Liu, HongJiang Zhang

Optimization-based automated home video editing systemabstractIn this paper, we present an optimization-based system that automates home video editing. This system automatically selects suitable or desirable highlight segments from a set of raw home videos and aligns them with a given piece of incidental music to create an edited video segment to a desired length based on the content of the video and incidental music. We developed an approach for extracting temporal structure and determining the importance of a video segment in order to facilitate the selection of highlight segments. Additionally we extract a temporal structure, beats, and tempos from the incidental music. In order to create more professional-looking results, the selected highlight segments satisfy a set of editing rules and are matched to the content of the incidental music. This task is formulated as a nonlinear 0-1 programming problem and the rules, which are adjustable and increasable, are embedded as constraints. The output video is rendered by connecting the selected highlight video segments with transition effects and the incidental music. Under this framework, we can choose the best-matched music for a given video and support different output styles. Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, Lie Lu, HongJiang Zhang

An automatic performance evaluation protocol for video text detection algorithmsabstractText presented in videos provides important supplemental information for video indexing and retrieval. Many efforts have been made for text detection in videos. However, there is still a lack of performance evaluation protocols for video text detection. In this paper, we propose an objective and comprehensive performance evaluation protocol for video text detection algorithms. The protocol includes a positive set and a negative set of indices at the textbox level, which evaluate the detection quality in terms of both location accuracy and fragmentation of the detected textboxes. In the protocol, we assign a detection difficulty (DD) level to each ground truth textbox. The performance indices can then be normalized with respect to the textbox DD level and are therefore tolerant to different ground-truth difficulties to a certain degree. We also assign a detectability index (DI) value to each ground-truth textbox. The overall detection rate is the DI-weighted average of the detection qualities of all ground-truth textboxes, which makes the detection rate more accurate to reveal the real performance. The automatic performance evaluation scheme has been applied to performance evaluation of a text detection approach to determine the best thresholds that can yield the best detection results. The protocol has also been employed to compare the performances of several text detection systems. Hence, we believe that the proposed protocol can be used to compare the performance of different video/image text detection algorithms/systems and can even help improve, select, and design new text detection methods. | 2004 | Relevance feedback in region-based image retrievalabstractRelevance feedback and region-based representations are two effective ways to improve the accuracy of content-based image retrieval systems. Although these two techniques have been successfully investigated and developed in the last few years, little attention has been paid to combining them together. We argue that integrating these two approaches and allowing them to benefit from each other will yield better performance than using either of them alone. To do that, on the one hand, two relevance feedback algorithms are proposed based on region representations. One is inspired from the query point movement method. By assembling all of the segmented regions of positive examples together and reweighting the regions to emphasize the latest ones, a pseudo image is formed as the new query. An incremental clustering technique is also considered to improve the retrieval efficiency. The other is the introduction of existing support vector machine-based algorithms. A new kernel is proposed so as to enable the algorithms to be applicable to region-based representations. On the other hand, a rational region weighting scheme based on users' feedback information is proposed. The region weights that somewhat coincide with human perception not only can be used in a query session, but can also be memorized and accumulated for future queries. Experimental results on a database of 10 000 general-purpose images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Mingjing Li, HongJiang Zhang, Bo Zhang 0010

Robust multipose face detection in imagesabstractAutomatic human face detection from images in surveillance and biometric applications is a challenging task due to variations in image background, view, illumination, articulation, and facial expression. We propose a novel three-step face detection approach to addressing this problem. The approach adopts a simple-to-complex strategy. First, a linear-filtering algorithm is applied to enhance detection performance by removing most nonface-like candidates rapidly. Second, a boosting chain algorithm is adopted to combine the boosting classifiers into a hierarchical "chain" structure. By utilizing the inter-layer discriminative information, this algorithm reveals a higher efficiency than traditional approaches. Last, a postfiltering algorithm, consisting of image preprocessing; support vector machine-filter and color-filter, is applied to refine the final prediction. As only a few candidate windows remain in the final stage, this algorithm greatly improves detection accuracy with small computation cost. Compared with conventional approaches, this three-step approach is shown to be more effective and capable of handling more pose variations. Moreover, together with a two-level hierarchy in-plane pose estimator, a rapid multiview face detector is built. Experimental results demonstrate a significant performance improvement for the proposed approach over others. Mingjing Li, HongJiang Zhang

Bayesian shape localization for face recognition using global and local texturesabstractWe present a fully automatic system for face recognition in databases, with only a small number of samples (even a single sample) for each individual. The shape localization problem is formulated in the Bayesian framework. In the learning stage, the RankBoost approach is introduced to model the likelihood of local features associated with the fiducial point, while preserving the prior ranking order between the ground truth position and its neighbors; in the inferring stage, a simple efficient iterative algorithm is proposed to uncover the MAP shape by locally modeling the likelihood distribution around each fiducial point. Based on the accurately located fiducial points, two popular mutual enhancing texture features for human face representation are automatically extracted and integrated: global texture features, which are the normalized shape-free gray-level values enclosed in the mean shape: local texture features, which are represented by Gabor wavelets extracted at the fiducial points (eye corners, mouth, etc.). Global texture mainly encodes the low-frequency information of a face, while local texture encodes the local high-frequency components. Extensive experiments illustrate that our proposed shape localization approach significantly improves the shape location accuracy, robustness, and face recognition rate; moreover, experiments conducted on the FERET and Yale databases show that our algorithm outperforms the classical eigenfaces and fisherfaces, as well as other approaches utilizing shape and global and local textures. | 2004 | An efficient and effective region-based image retrieval frameworkabstractAn image retrieval framework that integrates efficient region-based representation in terms of storage and complexity and effective on-line learning capability is proposed. The framework consists of methods for region-based image representation and comparison, indexing using modified inverted files, relevance feedback, and learning region weighting. By exploiting a vector quantization method, both compact and sparse (vector) region-based image representations are achieved. Using the compact representation, an indexing scheme similar to the inverted file technology and an image similarity measure based on Earth Mover's Distance are presented. Moreover, the vector representation facilitates a weighted query point movement algorithm and the compact representation enables a classification-based algorithm for relevance feedback. Based on users' feedback information, a region weighting strategy is also introduced to optimally weight the regions and enable the system to self-improve. Experimental results on a database of 10,000 general-purposed images demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed framework. Mingjing Li, HongJiang Zhang, Bo Zhang 0010

Bayesian Tangent Shape Model: Estimating Shape and Pose Parameters via Bayesian InferenceabstractIn this paper we study the problem of shape analysis and its application in locating facial feature points on frontal faces. We propose a Bayesian inference solution based on tangent shape approximation called Bayesian tangent shape model (BTSM). Similarity transform coefficients and the shape parameters in BTSM are determined through MAP estimation. Tangent shape vector is treated as the hidden state of the model, and accordingly, an EM based searching algorithm is proposed to implement the MAP procedure. The major results of our algorithm are: 1) tangent shape is updated by a weighted average of two shape vectors, the projection of the observed shape onto tangent space, and the reconstruction of shape parameters. 2) Shape parameters are regularized by multiplying a ratio of the noise variations, which is a continuous function instead of a truncated function. We discussed the advantages conveyed by these results, and demonstrate the accuracy and the stability of the algorithm by extensive experiments. Lie Gu, HongJiang Zhang

A people similarity based approach to video indexingabstractThis paper presents a new approach to people-based video indexing. In this approach, we define a people-based similarity measure according to both clothing similarity and speaking voice similarity. Such similarity depicts how perceptually similar two people appearing in different scenes are and if they belong to an identical person. Instead of computing in feature space, the proposed people-based similarity is computed in distance space. The extended support vector machines (SVM) are employed to map a serial of low-level feature distances to a perceived people similarity. In order to build people-based video indexing, a novel unsupervised clustering algorithm is also proposed, which can more correctly identify an individual person according to mutual people similarities between two people. | 2003 | UBM-based real-time speaker segmentation for broadcasting newsabstractThis paper addresses the problem of real-time speaker change detection in broadcast news, in which no prior knowledge on speakers is assumed. Our speaker segmentation is a "coarse to refine" process, which consists of two stages: pre-segmentation and refinement. In the pre-segmentation stage, a new approach based on Gaussian mixture model-universal background model (GMM-UBM) is proposed to categorize feature vectors into three sets, i.e. reliable speaker-related set, doubtful speaker-related set and unreliable speaker-related set, in order to enhance the effect of the reliable speaker-related feature vectors. Then potential speaker change boundaries are detected based on a novel distance measure. In the refinement stage, incremental speaker adaptation (ISA), which is suitable for real-time requirement, is proposed to obtain considerably precise speaker models so that the potential speaker change boundaries can be confirmed and refined. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach yields satisfactory performance. Ting-Yao Wu, Lie Lu, Ke Chen 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Learning a Locality Preserving Subspace for Visual RecognitionabstractWe have demonstrated that the face recognition performance can be improved significantly in low dimensional linear subspaces. Conventionally, principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) are considered effective in deriving such a face subspace. However, both of them effectively see only the Euclidean structure of face space. We propose a new approach to mapping face images into a subspace obtained by locality preserving projections (LPP) for face analysis. We call this Laplacianface approach. Different from PCA and LDA, LPP finds an embedding that preserves local information, and obtains a face space that best detects the essential manifold structure. In this way, the unwanted variations resulting from changes in lighting, facial expression, and pose may be eliminated or reduced. We compare the proposed Laplacianface approach with eigenface and fisherface methods on three test datasets. Experimental results show that the proposed Laplacianface approach provides a better representation and achieves lower error rates in face recognition. | 2003 | Automatic Video Summarization by Graph ModelingabstractWe propose a unified approach for summarization based on the analysis of video structures and video highlights. Our approach emphasizes both the content balance and perceptual quality of a summary. Normalized cut algorithm is employed to globally and optimally partition a video into clusters. A motion attention model based on human perception is employed to compute the perceptual quality of shots and clusters. The clusters, together with the computed attention values, form a temporal graph similar to Markov chain that inherently describes the evolution and perceptual importance of video clusters. In our application, the flow of a temporal graph is utilized to group similar clusters into scenes, while the attention values are used as guidelines to select appropriate subshots in scenes for summarization. In this framework, a "chain" structure is introduced to integrate historical knowledge into successive boosting learning. Moreover, a linear optimization scheme is proposed to address the problems of redundancy in boosting learning and threshold adjusting in cascade coupling. By this means, the resulting classifier consists of fewer weak classifiers yet achieves lower error rates than boosting cascade in both training and test. Experimental comparisons of boosting chain and boosting cascade are provided through a face detection problem. The promising results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness made by boosting chain. | 2003 | Ranking Prior Likelihood Distributions for Bayesian Shape Localization FrameworkabstractWe formulate the shape localization problem in the Bayesian framework. In the learning stage, we propose the Constrained Rank-Boost approach to model the likelihood of local features associated with the key points of an object, like face, while preserve the prior ranking order between the ground truth position of a key point and its neighbors; in the inferring stage, a simple efficient iterative algorithm is proposed to uncover the MAP shape by locally modeling the likelihood distribution around each key point via our proposed variational locally weighted learning (VLWL) method. Our proposed framework has the following benefits: 1) compared to the classical PCA models, the likelihood presented by the ranking prior likelihood model has more discriminating power as to the optimal position and its neighbors, especially in the problem with ambiguity between the optimal positions and their neighbors; 2) the VLWL method guarantees that the posterior probability of the derived shape increases monotonously; and 3) the above two methods are both based on accurate probability formulation, which spontaneously leads to a robust confidence measure for the discovered shape. Moreover, we present a theoretical analysis for the convergence of the Constrained Rank-Boost. Extensive experiments compared with the active shape models demonstrate the accuracy, robustness, and stability of our proposed framework. Shuicheng Yan, Mingjing Li, HongJiang Zhang

Photo time-stamp detection and recognitionabstractThis paper addresses the problem of photo time-stamp detection and recognition, which determines the time a photo was taken. Since the time-stamp is exposed together with the scene, the main challenge comes from complex background and saturation of the time-stamp. An MAP (maximum a posterior probability) based template matching method is proposed to detect and recognize the time-stamp simultaneously from a photo. A key step of this method is a skeleton-matching algorithm for individual digits, which supports partial matching and deals with complex background and saturation. Practically, to avoid exhaustive search, a saliency map is obtained by applying a set of morphologic operators on a photo. Proposals can be generated from the saliency map and the proposed method calculates the probability for each proposal. An application with strong prior knowledge is also given in which the proposed method achieves high accuracy in almost real time. HongJiang Zhang

Automatic attention object extraction from imagesabstractWith the development of content-based multimedia systems, there is a need for automatic extraction of objects from natural images. However, the objects extracted by most existing approaches are often inconsistent with human perception since these approaches totally neglect the viewer's attentions. To address this issue, a method is presented in this paper to automatically extract the viewer's attended objects from an image. From the memorized knowledge, it then learns some hidden semantic information of images. In this paper, a systemic framework is proposed for camera motion analysis, which is robust to low quality home videos. At the bottom layer of this framework, event HMMs output basic hypotheses based on low-level features. The upper layers are composed of composition HMMs, which add constraints on those hypotheses of the lower layer. Instead of isolated event recognition, the hypotheses at different layers are optimized in a bottom-up manner and the optimal semantics are determined by top-down process. | 2003 | An efficient memorization scheme for relevance feedback in image retrievalabstractWe propose a novel approach to memorizing content relevance information accumulated in relevance feedback sessions (historical relevance feedback) in image retrieval. | 2003 | AVE: automated home video editingabstractIn this paper, we present a system that automates home video editing. This system automatically extracts a set of highlight segments from a set of raw home videos and aligns them with user supplied incidental music based on the content of the video and incidental music. We developed an approach for extracting temporal structure and determining the importance of a video segment in order to facilitate the selection of highlight segments. Additionally we extract temporal structure, beats and tempos from the incidental music. In order to create more professional-looking results, the selected highlight segments satisfy a set of editing rules and are matched to the content of the incidental music. This task is formulated as a non-linear 0-1 programming problem and the rules are embedded as constraints. The output video is rendered by connecting the selected highlight video segments with transition effects and the incidental music. Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, Lie Lu, HongJiang Zhang

Photo2VideoabstractTo exploit rich content embedded in a single photograph, a system named Photo2Video was developed to automatically convert a photographic series into a video by simulating camera motions, set to incidental music of the user's choice. For a chosen photographic series, an appropriate camera motion pattern is selected for each photograph to generate a corresponding motion photograph clip. Then, the final output video is rendered by connecting a series of motion photograph clips with specific transitions, and aligning with the selected incidental music. Photo2Video provides a novel way to browse a series of images and can be regarded as a system exploring the new medium between photograph and video. Xian-Sheng Hua 0001, Lie Lu, HongJiang Zhang

Automatic browsing of large pictures on mobile devicesabstractPictures have become increasingly common and popular in mobile communications. However, due to the limitation of mobile devices, there is a need to develop new technologies to facilitate the browsing of large pictures on the small screen. In this paper, we propose a novel approach which is able to automate the scrolling and navigation of a large picture with a minimal amount of user interaction on mobile devices. An image attention model is employed to illustrate the information structure within an image. An optimal image browsing path is then calculated based on the image attention model to simulate the human browsing behaviors. Experimental evaluations of the proposed mechanism indicate that our approach is an effective way for viewing large images on small displays. | 2003 | Automated extraction of music snippetsabstractSimilar to image and video thumbnail, music snippet is defined as the most representative or highlight excerpt of a music clip, and can be used efficiently for fast browsing large number of music files. Music snippet is usually a part of the repeated melody, main theme or chorus. In this paper, we present an approach to extracting music snippet automatically. In our approach, the most salient segment of the music is firstly detected based on its occurrence frequency and energy information. Meanwhile, the boundaries of musical phrases are also detected based on the estimated phrase length and phrase boundary confidence of each frame. These boundaries are used to ensure that an extracted snippet does not break musical phrases. Finally, the musical phrases including the most salient segment are extracted as music snippet. User study indicates that the proposed algorithm works very well on our music database. Lie Lu, HongJiang Zhang

Contrast-based image attention analysis by using fuzzy growingabstractVisual attention analysis provides an alternative methodology to semantic image understanding in many applications such as adaptive content delivery and region-based image retrieval. In this paper, we propose a feasible and fast approach to attention area detection in images based on contrast analysis. The main contributions are threefold: 1) a new saliency map generation method based on local contrast analysis is proposed; 2) by simulating human perception, a fuzzy growing method is used to extract attended areas or objects from the saliency map; and 3) a practicable framework for image attention analysis is presented, which provides three-level attention analysis, i.e., attended view, attended areas and attended points. This framework facilitates visual analysis tools or vision systems to automatically extract attentions from images in a manner like human perception. | 2003 | Video summarization based on user log enhanced link analysisabstractEfficient video data management calls for intelligent video summarization tools that automatically generate concise video summaries for fast skimming and browsing. Traditional video summarization techniques are based on low-level feature analysis, which generally fails to capture the semantics of video content. Our vision is that users unintentionally embed their understanding of the video content in their interaction with computers. This valuable knowledge, which is difficult for computers to learn autonomously, can be utilized for video summarization process. In this paper, we present an intelligent video browsing and summarization system that utilizes previous viewers' browsing log to facilitate future viewers. Specifically, a novel ShotRank notion is proposed as a measure of the subjective interestingness and importance of each video shot. A ShotRank computation framework is constructed to seamlessly unify low-level video analysis and user browsing log mining. The resulting ShotRank is used to organize the presentation of video shots and generate video skims. Experimental results from user studies have strongly confirmed that ShotRank indeed represents the subjective notion of interestingness and importance of each video shot, and it significantly improves future viewers' browsing experience. | 2003 | Knowing a tree from the forest: art image retrieval using a society of profilesabstractThis paper aims to address the problem of art image retrieval (AIR), which aims to help users find their favorite painting images. AIR is of great interests to us because of its application potentials and interesting research challenges---the retrieval is not only based on painting contents or styles, but also heavily based on user preference profiles. This paper describes the collaborative ensemble learning, a novel statistical learning approach to this task. It at first applies probabilistic support vector machines (SVMs) to model each individual user's profile based on given examples, i.e. liked or disliked paintings. Due to the high complexity of profile modelling, the SVMs can be rather weak in predicting preferences for new paintings. To overcome this problem, we combine a society of users' profiles, represented by their respective SVM models, to predict a given user's preferences for painting images. We demonstrate that the combination scheme is embedded in a Bayesian framework and retains intuitive interpretations---like-minded users are likely to share similar preferences. We report extensive empirical studies based on two experimental settings. The first one includes some controlled simulations performed on 4533 painting images. In the second setting, we report evaluations based on user preferences collected through an online web-based survey. Both experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves excellent performance in terms of capturing a user's diverse preferences. | 2003 | Automated annotation of human faces in family albumsabstractAutomatic annotation of photographs is one of the most desirable needs in family photograph management systems. In this paper, we present a learning framework to automate the face annotation in family photograph albums. Firstly, methodologies of content-based image retrieval and face recognition are seamlessly integrated to achieve automated annotation. Secondly, face annotation is formulated in a Bayesian framework, in which the face similarity measure is defined as maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation. Thirdly, to deal with the missing features, marginal probability is used so that samples which have missing features are compared with those having the full feature set to ensure a non-biased decision. The experimental evaluation has been conducted within a family album of few thousands of photographs and the results show that the proposed approach is effective and efficient in automated face annotation in family albums. However, the same techniques, when applied directly to small web search such as intranet and site search, cannot achieve the same performance because their link structures are different from the global Web. | 2003 | Detecting web page structure for adaptive viewing on small form factor devicesabstractMobile devices have already been widely used to access the Web. However, because most available web pages are designed for desktop PC in mind, it is inconvenient to browse these large web pages on a mobile device with a small screen. In this paper, we propose a new browsing convention to facilitate navigation and reading on a small-form-factor device. A web page is organized into a two level hierarchy with a thumbnail representation at the top level for providing a global view and index to a set of sub-pages at the bottom level for detail information. A page adaptation technique is also developed to analyze the structure of an existing web page and split it into small and logically related units that fit into the screen of a mobile device. For a web page not suitable for splitting, auto-positioning or scrolling-by-block is used to assist the browsing as an alterative. Our experimental results show that our proposed browsing convention and developed page adaptation scheme greatly improve the user's browsing experiences on a device with a small display. | 2003 | A novel video key-frame-extraction algorithm based on perceived motion energy modelabstractThe key frame is a simple yet effective form of summarizing a long video sequence. The number of key frames used to abstract a shot should be compliant to visual content complexity within the shot and the placement of key frames should represent most salient visual content. Motion is the more salient feature in presenting actions or events in video and, thus, should be the feature to determine key frames. We propose a triangle model of perceived motion energy (PME) to model motion patterns in video and a scheme to extract key frames based on this model. The frames at the turning point of the motion acceleration and motion deceleration are selected as key frames. The key-frame selection process is threshold free and fast and the extracted key frames are representative. Tianming Liu 0001, HongJiang Zhang, Feihu Qi

Motion analysis and segmentation through spatio-temporal slices processingabstractThis paper presents new approaches in characterizing and segmenting the content of video. These approaches are developed based upon the pattern analysis of spatio-temporal slices. While traditional approaches to motion sequence analysis tend to formulate computational methodologies on two or three adjacent frames, spatio-temporal slices provide rich visual patterns along a larger temporal scale. We first describe a motion computation method based on a structure tensor formulation. This method encodes visual patterns of spatio-temporal slices in a tensor histogram, on one hand, characterizing the temporal changes of motion over time, on the other hand, describing the motion trajectories of different moving objects. By analyzing the tensor histogram of an image sequence, we can temporally segment the sequence into several motion coherent subunits, in addition, spatially segment the sequence into various motion layers. The temporal segmentation of image sequences expeditiously facilitates the motion annotation and content representation of a video, while the spatial decomposition of image sequences leads to a prominent way of reconstructing background panoramic images and computing foreground objects. | 2003 | Relevance feedback in content-based image retrieval: Bayesian framework, feature subspaces, and progressive learningabstractResearch has been devoted in the past few years to relevance feedback as an effective solution to improve performance of content-based image retrieval (CBIR). In this paper, we propose a new feedback approach with progressive learning capability combined with a novel method for the feature subspace extraction. The proposed approach is based on a Bayesian classifier and treats positive and negative feedback examples with different strategies. Positive examples are used to estimate a Gaussian distribution that represents the desired images for a given query; while the negative examples are used to modify the ranking of the retrieved candidates. In addition, feature subspace is extracted and updated during the feedback process using a principal component analysis (PCA) technique and based on user's feedback. That is, in addition to reducing the dimensionality of feature spaces, a proper subspace for each type of features is obtained in the feedback process to further improve the retrieval accuracy. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method increases the retrieval speed, reduces the required memory and improves the retrieval accuracy significantly. Zhong Su, HongJiang Zhang, Stan Z. | 2003 | Joint semantics and feature based image retrieval using relevance feedbackabstractRelevance feedback is a powerful technique for image retrieval and has been an active research direction for the past few years. Various ad hoc parameter estimation techniques have been proposed for relevance feedback. In addition, methods that perform optimization on multilevel image content model have been formulated. However, these methods only perform relevance feedback on low-level image features and fail to address the images' semantic content. In this paper, we propose a relevance feedback framework to take advantage of the semantic contents of images in addition to low-level features. By forming a semantic network on top of the keyword association on the images, we are able to accurately deduce and utilize the images' semantic contents for retrieval purposes. We also propose a ranking measure that is suitable for our framework. The accuracy and effectiveness of our method is demonstrated with experimental results on real-world image collections. | 2002 | Learning region weighting from relevance feedback in image retrievalabstractThe region-based approach to image retrieval has emerged as one of the most active research directions in the past few years. There are two crucial problems in the region-based systems: the weighting of regions and the use of relevance feedback. The former plays an important role in computing the region-based similarity of two images, while the latter can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of any CBIR system, if properly employed. In this paper, we propose Key-Region, a novel region weighting scheme that is based on the user's relevance feedback information. The region weight that coincides with human perception can not only be used in a query session, but also be memorized and accumulated for future queries. | 2002 | Efficient video text recognition using multiple frame integrationabstractText superimposed on the video frames provides supplemental but important information for video indexing and retrieval. Many efforts have been made for videotext detection and recognition (video OCR). The main difficulties of video OCR are the low resolution and the background complexity. We present efficient schemes to deal with the second difficulty by sufficiently utilizing multiple frames that contain the same text to get every clear word from these frames. Firstly, we use multiple frame verification to reduce text detection false alarms. We then choose those frames where the text is most likely clear, thus it is more possible to be correctly recognized. We then detect and joint every clear text block from those frames to form a clearer "man-made" frame. Later we apply a block-based adaptive thresholding procedure on these "man-made" frames. Finally, the binarized frames are sent to an OCR engine for recognition. Experiments show that the word recognition rate has been increased over 28% by these methods. In this paper, the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is applied to represent the distribution of positive images in relevance feedback, and a novel method is proposed to estimate the parameters of the GMM. Both positive and negative examples are used to estimate the number of Gaussian components. Furthermore, due to the lack of training samples, unlabeled data are also incorporated to estimate the covariance matrices. | 2002 | FloatBoost Learning for ClassificationabstractAdaBoost [3] minimizes an upper error bound which is an exponential function of the margin on the training set [14]. However, the ultimate goal in applications of pattern classification is always minimum error rate. On the other hand, AdaBoost needs an effective procedure for learning weak classifiers, which by itself is difficult especially for high dimensional data. In this paper, we present a novel procedure, called FloatBoost, for learning a better boosted classifier. FloatBoost uses a backtrack mechanism after each iteration of AdaBoost to remove weak classifiers which cause higher error rates. The resulting float-boosted classifier consists of fewer weak classifiers yet achieves lower error rates than AdaBoost in both training and test. We also propose a statistical model for learning weak classifiers, based on a stagewise approximation of the posterior using an overcomplete set of scalar features. Experi- mental comparisons of FloatBoost and AdaBoost are provided through a difficult classification problem, face detection, where the goal is to learn from training examples a highly nonlinear classifier to differentiate be- tween face and nonface patterns in a high dimensional space. The results clearly demonstrate the promises made by FloatBoost over AdaBoost. Stan Z. Li, ZhenQiu Zhang, Harry Shum, HongJiang Zhang

Improving Encarta Search Engine Performance by Mining User LogsabstractWe propose a data-mining approach that produces generalized query patterns (with generalized keywords) from the raw user logs of the Microsoft Encarta search engine (). Those query patterns can act as cache of the search engine, improving its performance. The cache of the generalized query patterns is more advantageous than the cache of the most frequent user queries since our patterns are generalized, covering more queries and future queries — even those not previously asked. Our method is unique since query patterns discovered reflect the actual dynamic usage and user feedbacks of the search engine, rather than the syntactic linkage structure of web pages (as Google does). Simulation shows that such generalized query patterns improve search engine's overall speed considerably. The generalized query patterns, when viewed with a graphical user interface, are also helpful to web editors, who can easily discover topics in which users are mostly interested. | 2002 | Content analysis for audio classification and segmentationabstractWe present our study of audio content analysis for classification and segmentation, in which an audio stream is segmented according to audio type or speaker identity. We propose a robust approach that is capable of classifying and segmenting an audio stream into speech, music, environment sound, and silence. Audio classification is processed in two steps, which makes it suitable for different applications. The first step of the classification is speech and nonspeech discrimination. In this step, a novel algorithm based on K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) and linear spectral pairs-vector quantization (LSP-VQ) is developed. The second step further divides nonspeech class into music, environment sounds, and silence with a rule-based classification scheme. A set of new features such as the noise frame ratio and band periodicity are introduced and discussed in detail. We also develop an unsupervised speaker segmentation algorithm using a novel scheme based on quasi-GMM and LSP correlation analysis. Without a priori knowledge, this algorithm can support the open-set speaker, online speaker modeling and real time segmentation. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithms can produce very satisfactory results. Lie Lu, HongJiang Zhang, Hao Jiang 0007

Automatic image orientation detectionabstractWe present an algorithm for automatic image orientation estimation using a Bayesian learning framework. We demonstrate that a small codebook (the optimal size of codebook is selected using a modified MDL criterion) extracted from a learning vector quantizer (LVQ) can be used to estimate the class-conditional densities of the observed features needed for the Bayesian methodology. We further show how principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) can be used as a feature extraction mechanism to remove redundancies in the high-dimensional feature vectors used for classification. The proposed method is compared with four different commonly used classifiers, namely k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine (SVM), a mixture of Gaussians, and hierarchical discriminating regression (HDR) tree. Experiments on a database of 16 344 images have shown that our proposed algorithm achieves an accuracy of approximately 98% on the training set and over 97% on an independent test set. A slight improvement in classification accuracy is achieved by employing classifier combination techniques. Aditya Vailaya, HongJiang Zhang, Changjiang Yang, Feng-I Liu, Anil K. Jain 0001

On clustering and retrieval of video shots through temporal slices analysisabstractBased on the analysis of temporal slices, we propose novel approaches for clustering and retrieval of video shots. Temporal slices are a set of two-dimensional (2-D) images extracted along the time dimension of an image volume. They encode rich set of visual patterns for similarity measure. In this paper, we first demonstrate that tensor histogram features extracted from temporal slices are suitable for motion retrieval. Subsequently, we integrate both tensor and color histograms for constructing a two-level hierarchical clustering structure. Each cluster in the top level contains shots with similar color while each cluster in bottom level consists of shots with similar motion. The constructed structure is then used for the cluster-based retrieval. The proposed approaches are found to be useful particularly for sports games, where motion and color are important visual cues when searching and browsing the desired video shots. | 2002 | Learning similarity measure for natural image retrieval with relevance feedbackabstractA new scheme of learning similarity measure is proposed for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). It learns a boundary that separates the images in the database into two clusters. Images inside the boundary are ranked by their Euclidean distances to the query. The scheme is called constrained similarity measure (CSM), which not only takes into consideration the perceptual similarity between images, but also significantly improves the retrieval performance of the Euclidean distance measure. Two techniques, support vector machine (SVM) and AdaBoost from machine learning, are utilized to learn the boundary. They are compared to see their differences in boundary learning. The positive and negative examples used to learn the boundary are provided by the user with relevance feedback. The CSM metric is evaluated in a large database of 10009 natural images with an accurate ground truth. | 2002 | Query clustering using user logsabstractQuery clustering is a process used to discover frequently asked questions or most popular topics on a search engine. This process is crucial for search engines based on question-answering. Because of the short lengths of queries, approaches based on keywords are not suitable for query clustering. This paper describes a new query clustering method that makes use of user logs which allow us to identify the documents the users have selected for a query. The similarity between two queries may be deduced from the common documents the users selected for them. Our experiments show that a combination of both keywords and user logs is better than using either method alone. Ji-Rong Wen, Jian-Yun Nie, HongJiang Zhang

Learning Representative Local Features for Face DetectionabstractThis paper describes a face detection approach via learning local features. The key idea is that local features, being manifested by a collection of pixels in a local region, are learnt from the training set instead of arbitrarily defined. The learning procedure consists of two steps. First, a modified version of NMF (non-negative matrix factorization), namely local NMF (LNMF), is applied to obtain an overcomplete set of local features. Second, a learning algorithm based on AdaBoost is used to select a small number of local features and yields extremely efficient classifiers. Experiments are presented which show that face detection performance is comparable to state-of-the-art face detection systems. Lie Gu, Stan Z. Li, HongJiang Zhang

Learning Probabilistic Distribution Model for Multi-View Face DetectionabstractModeling subspaces of a distribution of interest in high dimensional spaces is a challenging problem in pattern analysis. In this paper, we present a novel framework for pose invariant face detection through. multi-view face distribution modeling. The approach is aimed to learn a set of low-dimensional subspaces from an originally nonlinear distribution by using the mixtures of probabilistic PCA. From the experiments, we found the learned PPCA models are of low dimensionality and exhibit high local linearity, and consequently offer an efficient representation for visual recognition. The model is then used to extract features and select "representative" negative training samples. Multi-view face detection is performed in the derived feature space by classifying each face into one of the view classes or into the nonface class, by using a multi-class SVM array classifier. The classification results from each view are fused together and yields the final classification results. The experimental results demonstrate the performance superiority of our proposed framework while performing multi-view face detection. Lie Gu, Stan Z. Li, HongJiang Zhang

Learning Similarity Measure for Natural Image Retrieval with Relevance FeedbackabstractA new scheme of learning similarity measure is proposed for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). It learns a boundary that separates the images in the database into two parts. Images on the positive side of the boundary are ranked by their Euclidean distances to the query. The scheme is called restricted similarity measure (RSM), which not only takes into consideration the perceptual similarity between images, but also significantly improves the retrieval performance based on the Euclidean distance measure. Two techniques, support vector machine and AdaBoost, are utilized to learn the boundary, and compared with respect to their performance in boundary learning. The positive and negative examples used to learn the boundary are provided by the user with relevance feedback. | 2001 | Direct Appearance ModelsabstractActive appearance model (AAM), which makes ingenious use of both shape and texture constraints, is a powerful tool for face modeling, alignment and facial feature extraction under shape deformations and texture variations. However, as we show through our analysis and experiments, there exist admissible appearances that are not modeled by AAM and hence cannot be reached by AAM search; also the mapping from the texture subspace to the shape subspace is many-to-one and therefore a shape should be determined entirely by the texture in it. We propose a new appearance model, called direct appearance model (DAM), without combining from shape and texture as in AAM. The DAM model uses texture information directly in the prediction of the shape and in the estimation of position and appearance (hence the name DAM). In addition, DAM predicts the new face position and appearance based on principal components of texture difference vectors, instead of the raw vectors themselves as in AAM. These lead to the following advantages over AAM: (1) DAM subspaces include admissible appearances previously unseen in AAM, (2) convergence and accuracy are improved, and (3) memory requirement is cut down to a large extent. The advantages are substantiated by comparative experimental results. Xinwen Hou, Stan Z. Li, HongJiang Zhang

Learning Spatially Localized, Parts-Based RepresentationabstractIn this paper, we propose a novel method, called local non-negative matrix factorization (LNMF), for learning spatially localized, parts-based subspace representation of visual patterns. An objective function is defined to impose a localization constraint, in addition to the non-negativity constraint in the standard NMF. This gives a set of bases which not only allows a non-subtractive (part-based) representation of images but also manifests localized features. An algorithm is presented for the learning of such basic components. Experimental results are presented to compare LNMF with the NMF and PCA methods for face representation and recognition, which demonstrates advantages of LNMF. Stan Z. | 2001 | Distance-from-boundary as a metric for texture image retrievalabstractA new metric is proposed for texture image retrieval, which is based on the signed distance of the images in the database to a boundary chosen by the query. This novel metric has three advantages: (1) the boundary distance measures are relatively insensitive to the sample distributions; (2) the same retrieval results can be obtained with respect to different (but visually similar) queries; (3) retrieval performance can be improved. The boundaries are obtained by using a statistical learning algorithm called support vector machine (SVM), and hence the boundaries can be simply represented by some vectors and their combination coefficients. Experimental results on the Brodatz texture database indicate that a significantly better retrieval performance can be achieved as compared to the traditional Euclidean distance-based approach. This technique can be further developed to learn pattern similarities among different texture classes and used in relevance feedback. Guodong Guo, HongJiang Zhang, Stan Z. Li

Learning topographic representation for multi-view image patternsabstractIn 3D object detection and recognition, the object of interest in an image is subject to changes in view-point as well as illumination. It is benefit for the detection and recognition if a representation can be derived to account for view and illumination changes in an effective and meaningful way. In this paper, we propose a method for learning such a representation from a set of un-labeled images containing the appearances of the object viewed from various poses and in various illuminations. Topographic Independent Component Analysis (TICA) is applied for the unsupervised learning to produce an emergent result, that is a topographic map of basis components. The map is topographic in the following sense: the basis components as the units of the map are ordered in the 2D map such that components of similar viewing angle are group in one axis and changes in illumination are accounted for in the other axis. This provides a meaningful set of basis vectors that may be used to construct view subspaces for appearance based multi-view object detection and recognition. Stan Z. | 2001 | Content-based retrieval of video shot using the-improved nearest feature line methodabstractShot-based classification and retrieval is very important for video database organization and access. We present a new approach: 'nearest feature line - NFL' used in shot retrieval. We look at key-frames in a shot as feature points to represent the shot in feature space. Lines connecting the feature points are further used to approximate the variations in the whole shot. The similarity between the query image and the shots in video database are measured by calculating the distance between the query image and the feature lines in feature space. To make it more suited to video data, we improved the original NFL method by adding constraints on the feature lines. Experimental results show that our improved NFL method is better than the traditional classification methods such as nearest neighbor (NN) and nearest center (NC). Li Zhao 0006, Stan Z. | 2001 | Pairwise Face RecognitionabstractWe develop a pairwise classification framework for face recognition, in which a C class face recognition problem is divided into a set of C(C-1)/2 two class problems. Such a problem decomposition not only leads to a set of simpler classification problems to be solved, thereby increasing overall classification accuracy, but also provides a framework for independent feature selection for each pair of classes. A simple feature ranking strategy is used to select a small subset of the features for each pair of classes. Furthermore, we evaluate two classification methods under the pairwise comparison framework: the Bayes classifier and the AdaBoost. Experiments on a large face database with 1079 face images of 137 individuals indicate that 20 features are enough to achieve a relatively high recognition accuracy, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the pairwise recognition framework. | 2001 | Kernel Machine Based Learning for Multi-View Face Detection and Pose EstimationabstractFace images are subject to changes in view and illumination. Such changes cause data distribution to be highly nonlinear and complex in the image space. It is desirable to learn a nonlinear mapping from the image space to a low dimensional space such that the distribution becomes simpler tighter and therefore more predictable for better modeling effaces. In this paper we present a kernel machine based approach for learning such nonlinear mappings. The aim is to provide an effective view-based representation for multi-view face detection and pose estimation. Assuming that the view is partitioned into a number of distinct ranges, one nonlinear view-subspace is learned for each (range of) view from a set of example face images of that view (range), by using kernel principal component analysis (KPCA). Projections of the data onto the view-subspaces are then computed as view-based nonlinear features. Multi-view face detection and pose estimation are performed by classifying a face into one of the facial views or into the nonface class, by using a multi-class kernel support vector classifier (KSVC). Experimental results show that fusion of evidences from multi-views can produce better results than using the result from a single view; and that our approach yields high detection and low false alarm rates in face detection and good accuracy in pose estimation, in comparison with the linear counterpart composed of linear principal component analysis (PCA) feature extraction and Fisher linear discriminant based classification (FLDC). | 2001 | View-Based Clustering of Object Appearances Based on Independent Subspace AnalysisabstractIn 3D object detection and recognition, an object of interest is subject to changes in view as well as in illumination and shape. For image classification purpose, it is desirable to derive a representation in which intrinsic characteristics of the object are captured in a low dimensional space while effects due to artifacts are reduced. In this paper, we propose a method for view-based unsupervised learning of object appearances. First, view-subspaces are learned from a view-unlabeled data set of multi-view appearances, using independent subspace analysis (ISA). A learned view-subspace provides a representation of appearances at that view, regardless of illumination effect. A measure, called view-subspace activity, is calculated thereby to provide a metric for view-based classification. View-based clustering is then performed by using maximum view-subspace activity (MVSA) criterion. | 2001 | Automatic Performance Evaluation for Video Text DetectionabstractWe propose an objective, comprehensive and difficulty-independent performance evaluation protocol for video text detection algorithms. The protocol includes a positive set and a negative set of indices at textbox level, which evaluate the detection quality in terms of both location accuracy and fragmentation of the detected textboxes. In the protocol, we assign a detection difficulty (DD) level to each ground truth textbox. The performance indices can then be normalized with respect to the textbox DD level and are therefore independent of the ground truth difficulty. We also assign a detection importance (DI) level to each ground truth textbox. The overall detection rate is the DI-weighted average of the detection qualities of all ground truth textboxes, which makes the detection rate more accurate to reveal the real performance. The automatic performance evaluation scheme has been applied on a text detection approach to determine the best parameters that can yield the best detection results. | 2001 | HTML Page Analysis Based on Visual CuesabstractWe present an approach to automatically analyzing semantic structure of HTML pages based on detecting visual similarities of content objects on Web pages. The approach is developed based on the observation that in most Web pages, layout styles of subtitles or records of the same content category are consistent and there are apparent separation boundaries between different categories. Thus these subtitles should have similar appearances if they are rendered in visual browsers and different categories can be separated clearly In our approach we first measure visual similarities of HTML content objects. Then we apply a pattern detection algorithm to detect frequent patterns of visual similarity and use a number of heuristics to choose the most possible patterns. By grouping items according to these patterns, we finally build a hierarchical representation (tree) of an HTML document with "visual consistency" inferred semantics. | 2001 | Integrating color and spatial features for content-based video retrievalabstractWe present a novel scheme for content-based video retrieval by exploring the spatio-temporal information. A shot with significant content changes can be segmented into several subshots that are of coherent content, and a shot similarity measure for video retrieval can be computed from the similarity between corresponding subshots. To characterize the temporal content variations in one shot, we developed two descriptors: dominant color histograms (DCH) and spatial structure histograms (SSH). By fusing temporal information into color content, DCHs for a "group of frames" (GoF) are trying to capture the dominant colors with long durations, which would be the colors of the focused objects or background. SSH is a set of features extracted from color-blob maps to describe spatial information for one individual frame. Experimental results on real-world sports videos prove that our proposed approach achieves the best performance on the average recall (AR) and average normalized modified retrieval rank (ANMRR) for video shot retrievals. | 2001 | A Content-Aware Rate Controller For Streamed Delivery Of MPEG-4 Fgs VideoabstractA content-aware rate controller (CRC) for MPEG-4 FGS stored video streaming over the Internet is proposed. The CRC optimally uses available bandwidth and client buffer to produce smooth video quality and provide protection to video segments with important content. The FGS video stream is forward-shifted to client buffer by actively dropping high enhancement layers. When bandwidth decreases sharply, the FS buffer is used as bandwidth so that the sharp bandwidth drop is hidden from the decoder. The active dropping and forward-shifting process is restarted when bandwidth recovers. Thus, higher layers of less importance content are dropped and lower layers of more importance are protected. A priori information about the stream content is used in the CRC such that video segments with important content are protected by allocating them more bandwidth. | 2001 | On clustering and retrieval of video shotsabstractClustering of video data is an important issue in video abstraction, browsing and retrieval. In this paper, we propose a two-level hierarchical clustering approach by aggregating shots with similar motion and color features. Motion features are computed directly from 2D tensor histograms, while color features are represented by 3D color histograms. Cluster validity analysis is further applied to automatically determine the number of clusters at each level. Video retrieval can then be done directly based on the result of clustering. The proposed approach is found to be useful particularly for sports games, where motion and color are important visual cues when searching and browsing the desired video shots. Since most games involve two teams, clsssification and retrieval of teams becomes an interesting topic. To achieve these goals, nevertheless, an initial as well as critical step is to isolate team players from background regions. | 2001 | Web mining for Web image retrievalabstractAbstract The popularity of digital images is rapidly increasing due to improving digital imaging technologies and convenient availability facilitated by the Internet. However, how to find user‐intended images from the Internet is nontrivial. The main reason is that the Web images are usually not annotated using semantic descriptors. In this article, we present an effective approach to and a prototype system for image retrieval from the Internet using Web mining. The system can also serve as a Web image search engine. One of the key ideas in the approach is to extract the text information on the Web pages to semantically describe the images. The text description is then combined with other low‐level image features in the image similarity assessment. Another main contribution of this work is that we apply data mining on the log of users' feedback to improve image retrieval performance in three aspects. First, the accuracy of the document space model of image representation obtained from the Web pages is improved by removing clutter and irrelevant text information. Second, to construct the user space model of users' representation of images, which is then combined with the document space model to eliminate mismatch between the page author's expression and the user's understanding and expectation. Third, to discover the relationship between low‐level and high‐level features, which is extremely useful for assigning the low‐level features' weights in similarity assessment. | 2001 | A media agent for automatically building a personalized semantic index of Web media objectsabstractAbstract A novel idea of media agent is briefly presented, which can automatically build a personalized semantic index of Web media objects for each particular user. Because the Web is a rich source of multimedia data and the text content on the Web pages is usually semantically related to those media objects on the same pages, the media agent can automatically collect the URLs and related text, and then build the index of the multimedia data, on behalf of the user whenever and wherever she accesses these multimedia data or their container Web pages. Moreover, the media agent can also use an off‐line crawler to build the index for those multimedia objects that are relevant to the user's favorites but have not accessed by the user yet. When the user wants to find these multimedia data once again, the semantic index facilitates text‐based search for her. Wenyin Liu, Zheng Chen 0001, Mingjing Li, HongJiang Zhang

Image classification for content-based indexingabstractGrouping images into (semantically) meaningful categories using low-level visual features is a challenging and important problem in content-based image retrieval. Using binary Bayesian classifiers, we attempt to capture high-level concepts from low-level image features under the constraint that the test image does belong to one of the classes. Specifically, we consider the hierarchical classification of vacation images; at the highest level, images are classified as indoor or outdoor; outdoor images are further classified as city or landscape; finally, a subset of landscape images is classified into sunset, forest, and mountain classes. We demonstrate that a small vector quantizer (whose optimal size is selected using a modified MDL criterion) can be used to model the class-conditional densities of the features, required by the Bayesian methodology. The classifiers have been designed and evaluated on a database of 6931 vacation photographs. Our system achieved a classification accuracy of 90.5% for indoor/outdoor, 95.3% for city/landscape, 96.6% for sunset/forest and mountain, and 96% for forest/mountain classification problems. We further develop a learning method to incrementally train the classifiers as additional data become available. We also show preliminary results for feature reduction using clustering techniques. Our goal is to combine multiple two-class classifiers into a single hierarchical classifier. Aditya Vailaya, Mário A. T. Figueiredo, Anil K. Jain 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Pose Invariant Face RecognitionabstractWe describe a novel neural network architecture, which can recognize human faces with any view in a certain viewing angle range (from left 30 degrees to right 30 degrees out of plane rotation). View-specific eigenface analysis is used as the front-end of the system to extract features, and the neural network ensemble is used for recognition. Experimental results show that the recognition accuracy of our network ensemble is higher than conventional methods such as using a single neural network to recognize faces of a specific view. | 2000 | A Hierarchical Characterization Scheme for Image RetrievalabstractIn this paper, we present a study of hierarchically characterizing image content from coarse level to fine level conducted using a series of shape features as a case in point. In this work, we have empirically proved that this hierarchical characterization is effective and necessary. We have used this hierarchical multimedia content characterization scheme in our shape retrieval experiments and see that the hierarchical method obtains similar performance in the retrieval of similar shapes to that of the simultaneous method (calculating similarity based on all features at a time), while the efficiency has been increased significantly. | 2000 | Integrating Visual, Audio and Text Analysis for News VideoabstractWe present a system developed for content-based broadcast news video browsing for home users. There are three main factors that distinguish our work from other similar ones. First, we have integrated the image and audio analysis results in identifying news segments. Second, we use the video OCR technology to detect text from frames, which provides a good source of textual information for story classification when transcripts and close captions are not available. Finally, natural language processing (NLP) technologies are used to perform automated categorization of news stories based on the texts obtained from close caption or video OCR process. Based on these video structure and content analysis technologies, we have developed two advanced video browsers for home users: intelligent highlight player and HTML-based video browser. | 2000 | Automatic Video Scene Extraction by Shot GroupingabstractFor more efficient organizing, browsing, and retrieving digital video content, it is important to extract video structure information at both scene and shot levels. The paper presents an effective approach to video scene segmentation based on a pseudo-object-based shot correlation analysis. A measure of the semantic correlation of consecutive shots based on dominant color grouping and tracking is proposed. A shot grouping method called expanding window is designed to cluster correlated consecutive shots into one scene. Evaluations based on real-world sports video programs validate the efficiency and effectiveness of our shot correlation measure and scene structure construction. Tong Lin 0002, HongJiang Zhang

Motion-Based Video Representation for Scene Change DetectionabstractWe present a scheme for automatically partitioning videos into scenes. A scene is generally referred to as a group of shots taken at the same site. We first propose a motion annotation algorithm based on the analysis of spatiotemporal image volumes. The algorithm characterizes the motions within shots by extracting and analyzing the motion trajectories encoded in the temporal slices of image volumes. A motion-based keyframe computing and selection strategy is thus proposed to compactly represent the content of shots. With these techniques, we further present a scene change detection algorithm by measuring the similarity of the representative keyframes in shots. Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Roland T. | 2000 | Using Bayesian classifier in relevant feedback of image retrievalabstractRelevance feedback is a powerful technique in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) and has been an active research area for the past few years. In this paper, we propose a new relevance feedback approach based on a Bayesian classifier, and it treats positive and negative feedback examples with different strategies. For positive examples, a Bayesian classifier is used to determine the distribution of the query space. A 'dibbling' process is applied to penalize images that are near the negative examples in the query and retrieval refinement process. The proposed algorithm also has a progressive learning capability that utilizes past feedback information to help the current query. Experimental results show that our algorithm is effective. | 2000 | A confidence measure based moving object extraction system built for compressed domainabstractAs the proliferation of compressed video sequences in MPEG formats continues, the ability to perform video analysis directly in the compressed domain becomes increasingly attractive. The availability of motion vectors and pixel values in coded forms can indirectly provide motion and intensity information for object analysis, avoiding the need to re-perform motion estimation. Albeit that the embedded motion field is contaminated with matching modeling errors and measurement errors, we will illustrate several motion field filtering and correction techniques to combat with noisy motion fields. We strive to reconstruct smooth true motion fields with a minimal amount of decoding, reducing computational resource and time requirement. In this paper, we describe the whole moving object extraction system with the general framework and component designs and show their effectiveness with two test sequences. | 2000 | A unified framework for semantics and feature based relevance feedback in image retrieval systemsabstractThe relevance feedback approach to image retrieval is a powerful technique and has been an active research direction for the past few years. Various ad hoc parameter estimation techniques have been proposed for relevance feedback. In addition, methods that perform optimization on multi-level image content model have been formulated. However, these methods only perform relevance feedback on the low-level image features and fail to address the images' semantic content. In this paper, we propose a relevance feedback technique, iFind, to take advantage of the semantic contents of the images in addition to the low-level features. By forming a semantic network on top of the keyword association on the images, we are able to accurately deduce and utilize the images' semantic contents for retrieval purposes. The accuracy and effectiveness of our method is demonstrated with experimental results on real-world image collections. Chunhui Hu, Xingquan Zhu 0001, HongJiang Zhang, Qiang Yang 0001

A prediction system for multimedia pre-fetching in InternetabstractThe rapid development of Internet has resulted in more and more multimedia in Web content. However, due to the limitation in the bandwidth and huge size of the multimedia data, users always suffer from long time waiting. On the other hand, if we can predict the web object or page that the user most likely will view next while the user is viewing the current page, and pre-fetch the content, then the perceived network latency can be significantly reduced. In this paper, we present an n-gram based model to utilize path profiles of users from very large web log to predict the users' future requests. Our model is based on a simple extension of existing point-based models for such predictions, but our results show that by sacrificing the applicability somewhat one can gain a great deal in prediction precision. Also we present an efficient method to compress the prediction model size so that it can be fitted into the main memory. Our result can potentially be applied to a wide range of applications on the web, including pro-fetching, enhancement of recommendation systems as well as web caching policies. The experiments based on three realistic web logs have proved the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Zhong Su, Qiang Yang 0001, HongJiang Zhang

Synthesized virtual view-based eigenspace for face recognitionabstractThis paper presents a new face recognition method using virtual view-based eigenspace. This method provides a possible way to recognize human face of different views even when samples of a view are not available. To achieve this, we have developed a virtual human face generation technique that synthesizes human face of arbitrary views. By using a frontal and profile images of a specific subject, a deformation technique allows automatic alignment of features in the 3-D generic graphic face model with the features of the pre-provided images of the specific subject. The deformation result is a 3-D face model of the specific human face. It reflects accurately the correspondence geometric features and texture features of the specific subject. In the recognition step, we use an extended nearest-neighbor rule based on an Euclidean distance measure as the recognition classifier. This work shows the feasibility of applying 3-D modeling techniques onto face recognition problems. HongJiang Zhang

| 2000 | WhatNext: A Prediction System for Web Requests Using N-gram Sequence ModelsabstractAs an increasing number of users access information on the Web, there is a great opportunity to learn from the server logs to learn about the users' probable actions in the future. We present an n-gram based model to utilize path profiles of users from very large data sets to predict the users' future requests. Since this is a prediction system, we cannot measure the recall in a traditional sense. We, therefore, present the notion of applicability to give a measure of the ability to predict the next document. Our model is based on a simple extension of existing point-based models for such predictions, but our results show for n-gram based prediction when n is greater than three, we can increase precision by 20% or more for two realistic Web logs. Also we present an efficient method that can compress our model to 30% of its original size so that the model can be loaded in main memory. Our result can potentially be applied to a wide range of applications on the Web, including pre-sending, pre-fetching, enhancement of recommendation systems as well as Web caching policies. Our tests are based on three realistic Web logs. Our algorithm is implemented in a prediction system called WhatNext, which shows a marked improvement in precision and applicability over previous approaches. | 2000 | Automatic Caption Localization in Compressed VideoabstractWe present a method to automatically localize captions in JPEG compressed images and the I-frames of MPEG compressed videos. Caption text regions are segmented from background images using their distinguishing texture characteristics. Unlike previously published methods which fully decompress the video sequence before extracting the text regions, this method locates candidate caption text regions directly in the DCT compressed domain using the intensity variation information encoded in the DCT domain. Therefore, only a very small amount of decoding is required. The proposed algorithm takes about 0.006 second to process a 240/spl times/350 image and achieves a recall rate of 99.17 percent while falsely accepting about 1.87 percent nontext DCT blocks on a variety of MPEG compressed videos containing more than 2,300 I-frames. | 1999 | Blur Determination in the Compressed Domain Using DTC InformationabstractThe paper presents a simple yet robust measure of image quality in terms of global (camera) blur. It is based on histogram computation of non-zero DCT coefficients. The technique is directly applicable to images and video frames in compressed (MPEG or JPEG) domain and to all types of MPEG frames (I-, P- or B-frames). The resulting quality measure is proved to be in concordance with subjective testing and is therefore suitable for quick qualitative characterization of images and video frames. | 1999 | Automatic Image Orientation DetectionabstractWe present an algorithm for automatic image orientation estimation using a Bayesian learning framework. We demonstrate that a small codebook (the optimal size of codebook is selected using a modified MDL criterion) extracted from a vector quantizer can be used to estimate the class-conditional densities of the observed features needed for the Bayesian methodology. We further show how feature clustering can be used as a feature selection mechanism to remove redundancies in the high-dimensional feature vectors used for classification. Experiments on a database of 17,901 images have shown that our proposed algorithm achieves an accuracy of approximately 97% on the training set and over 89% on an independent test set. | 1999 | A Pre-Analysis Method for Robust Global Motion EstimationabstractIn this paper, we present a new approach for robust global motion estimation based on pre-analysis of the video content. The novel idea is to do pre-analysis of scene content based on the STGS (spatial temporal gradient scale) images derived from original image sequences. Different motion models and estimation are applied to different classes of image sequences. As a result, outliers can be removed from the dominant motion estimation, overcoming the problem of inaccurate initial descending direction estimation associated with the classical global motion estimation methods. | 1999 | An integrated scheme for automated video abstraction based on unsupervised cluster-validity analysisabstractKey frames and previews are two forms of a video abstract, widely used for various applications in video browsing and retrieval systems. We propose in this paper a novel method for generating these two abstract forms for an arbitrary video sequence. The underlying principle of the proposed method is the removal of the visual-content redundancy among video frames. This is done by first applying multiple partitional clustering to all frames of a video sequence and then selecting the most suitable clustering option(s) using an unsupervised procedure for cluster-validity analysis. In the last step, key frames are selected as centroids of obtained optimal clusters. Video shots, to which key frames belong, are concatenated to form the preview sequence. | 1997 | Content-Based Video Retrieval and Compression: A Unified SolutionabstractVideo compression and retrieval have been treated as separate problems in the past. We present an object-based video representation that facilitates both compression and retrieval. Typically in retrieval applications, a video sequence is subdivided in time into a set of shorter segments each of which contains similar content. These segments are represented by 2-D representative images called "key-frames" that greatly reduce amount of data that is searched. However, key-frames do not describe the motions and actions of objects within the segment. We propose a representation that extends the ideas of the key-frame to further include what we define as "key-objects". These key-objects consist of regions within a key-frame that move with similar motion. Thus our key-objects allow a retrieval system to more efficiently present information to users and assist them in browsing and retrieving relevant video content. HongJiang Zhang, John Y. A.
