| 2025 | Study on the Behavioral Motives of Algorithmic Avoidance in Intelligent Recommendation SystemsabstractThrough an exploration of the underlying mechanisms driving users' algorithmic avoidance in intelligent recommendation systems, this study aims to facilitate a positive interaction between users and technology, providing theoretical guidance for the efficient operations of enterprises using intelligent recommendation systems. The research integrates the theories of information ecology and psychological resistance, establishing a model of influencing factors on users' algorithmic avoidance in intelligent recommendation systems. Utilizing a structural equation model, the study conducts analysis and validation on data collected from 506 questionnaires. The findings reveal that algorithmic transparency and perceived manipulation significantly impact the users' algorithmic avoidance in intelligent recommendation systems. The sense of being manipulated emerges as a crucial psychological factor leading to algorithmic avoidance, playing a complete mediating role in the influence of information quality, homogeneous recommendation, and algorithmic transparency on algorithmic avoidance. | 2023 | A Review of the State of the Art of Data Quality in HealthcareabstractEffective implementation of strategic data-driven health analysis initiatives is heavily dependent on the quality of the electronic medical records that serve as the foundation from which to improve clinical decisions and, in turn, the quality of care. Although there is a large body of research on the quality of healthcare data, a systematical understanding of the methods used to address the issues of data quality is missing. This study analyzes research articles in health information systems/healthcare informatics on data quality to derive a set of dimensions for understanding data quality. Issues related to each dimension are identified and methods used to address them summarized. The issues and methods can inform healthcare professionals of how to improve data practices. | 2023 | Valuing Your Patient's Opinion: Online Patient Reviews and Power DistanceabstractOnline reviews have a continuing impact across all industries. Even industries with highly skilled workers are affected by online reviews, despite large gaps in experience and skill between reviewers and reviewees. The authors conducted a study amongst physicians in Nevada and China to measure the perception of online patient reviews from the perspective of healthcare providers to explore whether this skill gap affected the perception of online reviews. The authors distributed and collected survey responses from over 200 physicians and used structural equation modeling techniques to evaluate the relationships. These findings show that physician perception of online patient reviews is partially mediated by power distance, direct effects exist between the relationships identified in our model, and that cross-cultural effects are present between physician responses across Nevada and China. This study expands the existing work in the field of review evaluations by operationalizing social-psychological distance into the construct of power distance within the context of healthcare. | 2022 | Critical Obstacles Affecting Adoption of Industrial Big Data Solutions in Smart Factories: An Empirical Study in ChinaabstractIndustrial big data is the key to realize the vision of smart factories. This research aims to identify and explore potential barriers that prevent organizations from deploying industrial big data solutions in the development of smart factories through a socio-technical perspective. The research follows an inductive qualitative approach. Twenty-seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with the CEO, smart factory manager, IT managers, departmental heads, and IS consultants in the selected case company. The interview data were analyzed using a thematic analysis method. Derived from a thematic analysis, six sets of barriers including technical, data, technical support, organization, individual, and social issues were identified, as well as the relationships between them. An empirical framework was developed to highlight the relationship between these barriers. This study contributes to the knowledge of industrial big data in general and provides constructive insight into industrial big data implementation in smart factory development particularly. | 2021 | An Investigation to the Industry 4.0 Readiness of Manufacturing Enterprises: The Ongoing Problems of Information Systems Strategic MisalignmentabstractThe visions of what constitutes Industry 4.0 is an industry based on gains in efficiency and productivity enhancements supported by integrated, smart information systems. This has caused information systems strategic misalignment that present a severe barrier to national and organizational aspirations. This paper studies the readiness of manufacturing companies for Industry 4.0 by using a case study of Chinese multinational enterprise in the aluminum production sector. The research design follows a rigorous grounded theory approach, which consisted of 41 semi-structured interviews in 7 different company branches. Based on this case study, the paper proposes an IS strategic misalignment model that identifies three levels of misalignment that need to be resolved before the vision of the smart industry can be realized. Six main categories of causes and five main categories of consequences of IS strategic misalignment are presented. This study contributes to the IS alignment literature and provides important implications for the achievement of Industry 4.0 in practice. Guo Chao Peng, Caihua Liu |

| 2021 | Investigating the Usage of IoT-Based Smart Parking Services in the Borough of WestminsterabstractSmart Parking schemes cannot succeed without the engagement and support of the drivers who may benefit from their use. This study investigates engagement with a Smart Parking service in the London Borough of Westminster. Factors likely to influence the use of Smart Parking services were identified from a literature review and incorporated into an explanatory model comprising 9 factors connected by 16 hypotheses. To test the model, residents of Westminster and visitors to the area were surveyed, resulting in a total of 212 valid responses. The responses were used to test a structural equation model, using confirmatory factor analysis. The results of the analysis indicated that Awareness of the scheme; Perceived Ease of Use; Perceived Usefulness; Cost saving; Perceived Privacy and Perceived Security all had a direct impact on Usage, with Awareness being the most influential factor. The results also highlighted the fact that, despite efforts by Westminster Council to publicise the scheme, 74% of respondents had little awareness of it, suggesting the need for improved publicity. | 2021 | Mobile Applications in China's Smart Cities: State-of-the-Art and Lessons LearnedabstractAligned with the global trend of smartness, China has invested heavily in over 700 smart city projects across over 500 cities. Hundreds of smart city apps, initiated by local authorities, have so emerged in the daily lives of Chinese citizens, but anecdotal evidence showed that these official apps have many problems and deficiencies. This study captures a snapshot of current development and problems of official smart city apps in China. A total of 333 such apps, together with 15754 comments, were collected, reviewed and analyzed. The results showed that China’s smart city apps fall into three application areas, i.e. smart transportation, smart healthcare, and smart livelihood, of which each provides some promising features and services. However, a range of functional, interface, design, usage and service-related problems were found in these apps. This paper concluded that further to the very efforts on infrastructure and hardware, local authorities in China and worldwide need to pay more attention to smart apps, in order to maximize potential return of their smart city investments. | 2021 | One-Stop Smart Urban Apps and Determinants of Their Continuance Usage: An Empirical Investigation Based on CSCMabstractThis study aimed to explore factors affecting continual usage of one-stop smart urban apps, which is the key to realise the vision of smart cities. A questionnaire (involved a total of 578 users/citizens) was carried out to test the research model, which was established based on existing user behavioural theories and recent literature on smart cities. The results, derived from confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling, confirmed that lower costs (measured by cognitive effort and perceived risks), as well as higher “smartness” (measured by output usefulness, output velocity, and the quality of offline services), would lead to better user satisfaction. Moreover, system quality has indirect influence on user satisfaction (i.e. citizens only feel dissatisfied when system pitfalls affect output usefulness and output velocity of smart urban apps), which together with social influence will determine citizens’ continuance usage intention of smart urban apps. | 2014 | Cloud Erp: A New Dilemma to Modern Organisations?abstractFor almost two decades, on-premise ERP has been adopted very prevalently in the industry. Accompanied with the emergence of cloud computing technologies in the late 2000s, there is an increasing trend for companies to migrate their hitherto internal ERP applications and databases into the cloud. Such ERP resources re-migration, which can offer a range of opportunities to user companies, is also associated with new challenges. The study reported in this paper aimed to explore potential benefits and barriers associated with the adoption of cloud ERPs. A set of in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 ERP and cloud consultants. The findings, derived from a thematic analysis, identified that whilst the economic and technical benefits promised by cloud vendors are attractive, the success of cloud ERP adoption can be affected by critical challenges related to diverse organisational factors as well as with current legal and technical complexity in the cloud environment.
