| 2026 | From chat to process: A conversational agent framework for social business process managementabstract• This article proposes a new framework for social BPM supported by conversational agents. • The framework combines social interaction, intent detection, and process memory for collaborative process management. • Four specialized agents are defined to handle the process lifecycle. • This approach demonstrates how AI-based conversations improve participation, flexibility, and transparency in BPM. • A call for tenders use case illustrates the feasibility and benefits of the proposed framework. | 2025 | Accessibility in conceptual modeling - A systematic literature review, a keyboard-only UML modeling tool, and a research roadmapabstractThe reports on Disability by the World Health Organization show that the number of people with disabilities is increasing. Consequently, accessibility should play an essential role in information systems engineering research. While there is an increasingly rich set of available web accessibility guidelines, testing frameworks, and generally accessibility features in modern web-based software systems, software development frameworks, and Integrated Development Environments, this paper shows, based on a systematic review of the literature and current modeling tools, that accessibility is, so far, only scarcely focused in conceptual modeling research. With this paper, we assess the state of the art of accessibility in conceptual modeling, we identify current research gaps, and we delineate a vision toward more accessible conceptual modeling methods and tools. As a concrete step forward toward this vision, we present a generic concept of a keyboard-only modeling tool interaction that is implemented as a new module for the Graphical Language Server Platform (GLSP) framework. We show—using a currently developed UML modeling tool—how efficiently this module allows GLSP-based tool developers to introduce accessibility features into their modeling tools, thereby engaging physically disabled users in conceptual modeling. • A Systematic Review of Accessibility in Conceptual Modeling Literature. • A Systematic Review of Accessibility in Conceptual Modeling Tools. • A Research Roadmap toward Accessible Conceptual Modeling. • A Generic Keyboard-only Modeling Tool Interaction Concept and Implementation. | 2023 | An extended taxonomy of advanced information visualization and interaction in conceptual modelingabstractConceptual modeling is integral to computer science research and is widely adopted in industrial practices, e.g., business process and enterprise architecture management. Providing adequate and usable modeling tools is necessary to adopt modeling languages efficiently. Meta-modeling platforms provide a rich and mature set of functionalities for realizing state-of-the-art modeling tools. These tools, albeit their stability and rich set of features, often lack a modern look and feel considering (i) how they visualize the models, and (ii) how modelers interact with the models. Current web technologies enable much richer, advanced opportunities for visualizing and interacting with conceptual models. However, a structured and comprehensive overview of possible information visualization and interaction techniques linked to conceptual models and modeling tools must be established. This paper aims to fill this gap by presenting an extended taxonomy of advanced information visualization and interaction in conceptual modeling. We present a generic taxonomy that is afterward contextualized within the specific domain of conceptual modeling. The taxonomy serves orientation in the vast developing field of information visualization and interaction and hopefully sparks innovation if future modeling tool development. | 2020 | Systems Analysis and Design Toolkit Based on Work System Theory and Its ExtensionsabstractThis article describes proposed content of an online toolkit for users of the work system modeling method (WSMM), an extension of the work system method (WSM), which was developed to help business professionals understand IT-reliant systems and collaborate with IT professionals. A summary of work system theory (WST) and WSM provides a background. A two-dimensional design space for modeling methods illustrates WSMM's context. Two limitations of WSMM imply the need for a toolkit that overcomes those limitations. An auto rental example is used to illustrate a series of modeling, analysis, and design modules related to different stakeholder purposes. Most of the modules reflect components of Word documents used as outlines to produce over 700 management briefings, mostly by MBA and Executive MBA students, between 2003 and 2017. A concluding section summarizes the main ideas, explains how the use of different modules based on the work system metaphor flexibly supports systems analysis and design, and identifies challenges for future research. | 2015 | Preserving Multi-view Consistency in Diagrammatic Knowledge RepresentationabstractMulti-view conceptual modeling provides means for representing, with diagrammatic means, the knowledge describing a “system under study” whose complexity cannot be captured in a single comprehensible representation. Typical examples are available in the field of enterprise modeling, where models are inherently layered or partitioned, a feature that must be enabled at meta-modeling level by means of abstraction and decomposition. Multi-view modeling must provide means for coping with the complexity of enterprise knowledge representations through consistency preservation techniques across multiple, interrelated views. The paper at hand formulates the conceptual functions fulfilled by multi-view modeling and provides a demonstrative implementation in the context of the Semantic Object Model enterprise modeling method.
