| 2021 | Discovering business process simulation models in the presence of multitasking and availability constraintsabstractBusiness process simulation is a versatile technique for quantitative analysis of business processes. A well-known limitation of process simulation is that the accuracy of the simulation results is limited by the faithfulness of the process model and simulation parameters given as input to the simulator. To tackle this limitation, various authors have proposed to discover simulation models from process execution logs, so that the resulting simulation models more closely match reality. However, existing techniques in this field make certain assumptions about resource behavior that do not typically hold in practice, including: (i) that each resource performs one task at a time; and (ii) that resources are continuously available (24/7). In reality, resources may engage in multitasking behavior and they work only during certain periods of the day or the week. This article proposes an approach to discover process simulation models from execution logs in the presence of multitasking and availability constraints. To account for multitasking, we adjust the processing times of tasks in such a way that executing the multitasked tasks sequentially with the adjusted times is equivalent to executing them concurrently with the original times. Meanwhile, to account for availability constraints, we use an algorithm for discovering calendar expressions from collections of time-points to infer resource timetables from an execution log. We then adjust the parameters of this algorithm to maximize the similarity between the simulated log and the original one. We evaluate the approach using real-life and synthetic datasets. The results show that the approach improves the accuracy of simulation models discovered from execution logs both in the presence of multitasking and availability constraints Bedilia Estrada-Torres, Manuel Camargo 0001, Marlon Dumas, Luciano García-Bañuelos, Ibrahim Mahdy, Maksym Yerokhin |

| 2020 | An Entropic Relevance Measure for Stochastic Conformance Checking in Process MiningabstractGiven an event log as a collection of recorded real-world process traces, process mining aims to automatically construct a process model that is both simple and provides a useful explanation of the traces. Conformance checking techniques are then employed to characterize and quantify commonalities and discrepancies between the log’s traces and the candidate models. Recent approaches to conformance checking acknowledge that the elements being compared are inherently stochastic – for example, some traces occur frequently and others infrequently – and seek to incorporate this knowledge in their analyses. Here we present an entropic relevance measure for stochastic conformance checking, computed as the average number of bits required to compress each of the log’s traces, based on the structure and information about relative likelihoods provided by the model. The measure penalizes traces from the event log not captured by the model and traces described by the model but absent in the event log, thus addressing both precision and recall quality criteria at the same time. We further show that entropic relevance is computable in time linear in the size of the log, and provide evaluation outcomes that demonstrate the feasibility of using the new approach in industrial settings. | 2019 | Variability in business processes: Automatically obtaining a generic specificationabstractThe existence of different process variants is inevitable in many modern organizations. However, variability in business process support has proven to be a challenge as it requires a flexible business process specification that supports the required process variants, while at the same time being compliant with policies and regulations. Declarative approaches could support variability, by providing rules constraining process behavior and thereby allowing different variants. However, manual specification of these rules is complicated and error-prone. As such, tools are required to ensure that duplication and overlap of rules is avoided as much as possible, while retaining maintainability. In this paper, we present an approach to represent different process variants in a single compound prime event structure, and provide a method to subsequently derive variability rules from this compound prime event structure. The approach is evaluated by conducting an exploratory evaluation on different sets of real-life business process variants, including a real-life case from the Dutch eGovernment, to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the approach. | 2011 | Fast fully dynamic landmark-based estimation of shortest path distances in very large graphsabstractComputing the shortest path between a pair of vertices in a graph is a fundamental primitive in graph algorithmics. Classical exact methods for this problem do not scale up to contemporary, rapidly evolving social networks with hundreds of millions of users and billions of connections. A number of approximate methods have been proposed, including several landmark-based methods that have been shown to scale up to very large graphs with acceptable accuracy. This paper presents two improvements to existing landmark-based shortest path estimation methods. The first improvement relates to the use of shortest-path trees (SPTs). Together with appropriate short-cutting heuristics, the use of SPTs allows to achieve higher accuracy with acceptable time and memory overhead. Furthermore, SPTs can be maintained incrementally under edge insertions and deletions, which allows for a fully-dynamic algorithm. The second improvement is a new landmark selection strategy that seeks to maximize the coverage of all shortest paths by the selected landmarks. The improved method is evaluated on the DBLP, Orkut, Twitter and Skype social networks. Konstantin Tretyakov, Abel Armas-Cervantes, Luciano García-Bañuelos, Jaak Vilo, Marlon Dumas |
