| 2026 | The 5th ACM International Workshop on Multimedia AI against Disinformation (MAD'26)abstractVerifying the authenticity of media has become an increasingly challenging task. Rapid advances in AI-generated content, spanning modalities like text, images, video, audio have significantly blurred the line between genuine and synthetic information. Nowadays, powerful foundation models can easily be leveraged to create, amplify and disseminate information at scale, enabling disinformation campaigns, defamation, or impersonation. This results in the erosion of trust in online information, which poses a great threat to society. The MAD’26 workshop seeks to address this problem by bringing together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines, united by the goal of combating disinformation through AI-driven approaches. Now in its fifth edition, the workshop aims to cultivate a collaborative environment that encourages the exchange of ideas, methodologies, and practical experiences. The workshop focuses on key research directions, including the detection of AI-generated and manipulated content, the analysis of disinformation propagation, and the examination of its broader societal impact. | 2020 | System Fusion with Deep EnsemblesabstractDeep neural networks (DNNs) are universal estimators that have achieved state-of-the-art performance in a broad spectrum of classification tasks, opening new perspectives for many applications. One of them is addressing ensemble learning. In this paper, we introduce a set of deep learning techniques for ensemble learning with dense, attention, and convolutional neural network layers. Our approach automatically discovers patterns and correlations between the decisions of individual classifiers, therefore, alleviating the difficulty of building such architectures. To assess its robustness, we evaluate our approach on two complex data sets that target different perspectives of predicting the user perception of multimedia data, i.e., interestingness and violence. The proposed approach outperforms the existing state-of-the-art algorithms by a large margin. Liviu-Daniel Stefan, Mihai Gabriel Constantin, Bogdan Ionescu |

| 2018 | Audio-visual encoding of multimedia content for enhancing movie recommendationsabstractWe propose a multi-modal content-based movie recommender system that replaces human-generated metadata with content descriptions automatically extracted from the visual and audio channels of a video. Content descriptors improve over traditional metadata in terms of both richness (it is possible to extract hundreds of meaningful features covering various modalities) and quality (content features are consistent across different systems and immune to human errors). Our recommender system integrates state-of-the-art aesthetic and deep visual features as well as block-level and i-vector audio features. For fusing the different modalities, we propose a rank aggregation strategy extending the Borda count approach. | 2017 | Simple, Efficient and Effective Encodings of Local Deep Features for Video Action RecognitionabstractFor an action recognition system a decisive component is represented by the feature encoding part which builds the final representation that serves as input to a classifier. One of the shortcomings of the existing encoding approaches is the fact that they are built around hand-crafted features and they are not also highly competitive on encoding the current deep features, necessary in many practical scenarios. In this work we propose two solutions specifically designed for encoding local deep features, taking advantage of the nature of deep networks, focusing on capturing the highest feature response of the convolutional maps. The proposed approaches for deep feature encoding provide a solution to encapsulate the features extracted with a convolutional neural network over the entire video. In terms of accuracy our encodings outperform by a large margin the current most widely used and powerful encoding approaches, while being extremely efficient for the computational cost. Evaluated in the context of action recognition tasks, our pipeline obtains state-of-the-art results on three challenging datasets: HMDB51, UCF50 and UCF101. I. C. | 2014 | Mobile Music Genius: Reggae at the Beach, Metal on a Friday Night?abstractThe amount of music consumed while on the move has been spiraling during the past couple of years, which requests for intelligent music recommendation techniques. In this demo paper, we introduce a context-aware mobile music player named "Mobile Music Genius" (MMG), which seamlessly adapts the music playlist on the fly, according to the user context. It makes use of a comprehensive set of features derived from sensor data, spatiotemporal information, and user interaction to learn which kind of music a listeners prefers in which context. We describe the automatic creation and adaptation of playlists and present results of a study that investigates the capabilities of the gathered user context features to predict the listener's music preference. | 2013 | A naive mid-level concept-based fusion approach to violence detection in Hollywood moviesabstractIn this paper we approach the issue of violence detection in typical Hollywood productions. Given the high variability in appearance of violent scenes in movies, training a classifier to predict violent frames directly from visual or/and auditory features seems rather difficult. Instead, we propose a different perspective that relies on fusing mid-level concept predictions that are inferred from low-level features. This is achieved by employing a bank of multi-layer perceptron classifiers featuring a dropout training scheme. Experimental validation conducted in the context of the Violent Scenes Detection task of the MediaEval 2012 Multimedia Benchmark Evaluation show the potential of this approach that ranked first among 34 other submissions in terms of precision and F1-score. | 2013 | Fisher kernel based relevance feedback for multimodal video retrievalabstractThis paper proposes a novel approach to relevance feedback based on the Fisher Kernel representation in the context of multimodal video retrieval. The Fisher Kernel representation describes a set of features as the derivative with respect to the log-likelihood of the generative probability distribution that models the feature distribution. In the context of relevance feedback, instead of learning the generative probability distribution over all features of the data, we learn it only over the top retrieved results. Hence during relevance feedback we create a new Fisher Kernel representation based on the most relevant examples. In addition, we propose to use the Fisher Kernel to capture temporal information by cutting up a video in smaller segments, extract a feature vector from each segment, and represent the resulting feature set using the Fisher Kernel representation. We evaluate our method on the MediaEval 2012 Video Genre Tagging Task, a large dataset, which contains 26 categories in 15.000 videos totalling up to 2.000 hours of footage. Results show that our method significantly improves results over existing state-of-the-art relevance feedback techniques. Furthermore, we show significant improvements by using the Fisher Kernel to capture temporal information, and we demonstrate that Fisher kernels are well suited for this task. | 2011 | A color-action perceptual approach to the classification of animated moviesabstractWe address a particular case of video genre classification, namely the classification of animated movies. This task is achieved using two categories of content descriptors, temporal and color based, which are adapted to this particular content. Temporal descriptors, like rhythm or action, are quantifying the perception of the action content at different levels. Color descriptors are determined using color perception which is quantified in terms of statistics of color distribution, elementary hues, color properties (e.g. amount of light colors, cold colors, etc.) and color relationship. The potential of the proposed descriptors to the classification task has been proved through experimental tests conducted on more than 159 hours of video footage. Despite the high diversity of the video material, the proposed descriptors achieve an average precision and recall ratios up to 90% and 92%, respectively, and a global correct detection ratio up to 92%. | 2007 | Data fusion for the management of multimedia documentsabstractMultimedia documents are increasingly numerous. Their efficient management requires tools to provide services that measure up to users' expectations, based on the contents of these voluminous document databases. This implies a number of challenges. Although we can extract highly symbolic concepts from texts, a wide semantic gap appears when processing images and sound. Thus, we propose using data fusion to capture the semantic field of the elements extracted from these media. On the other hand, if creating ontology makes it possible to manage the concept of "trade" in texts, additional data can be exploited from document contents. In the first instance, we suggest bringing together concepts and words through data fusion. Françoise Deloule, Patrick Lambert, Daniel Beauchêne, Bogdan Ionescu |
