Research illuminating women’s experience working in information technology (IT) in different parts of the world is vital if we are to address the gender gap in IT. Based on a survey of women from 36 countries, we examine the factors that influence women’s intention to leave the IT profession by adopting the job demands–resources model and the individual differences theory of gender and IT to compare their experiences. We present a model that identifies how these factors affect women’s experience in the profession based on environmental, identity, and individual differences. Our findings can inform the design of targeted interventions that address the underrepresentation of women in IT.

Work exhaustion has become one of the main job stressors that leads to dissatisfaction and worker turnover. To retain IT talent, managers seek ways to reduce stress, such as lowering workload or increasing monetary compensation. In this paper, we explore work exhaustion in a developing country to examine antecedents and mitigating factors for work exhaustion. Using a survey of 289 IT professionals in Vietnam, a developing country with high turnover rates and limited IT resources devoted to talent retention, we test how job demands and workplace preferences impact work exhaustion. The findings show that a preference for strong workplace structure suppresses workers’ perceptions of work overload and work/home conflict. Additionally, preference for strong workplace autonomy surprisingly amplifies perceived work overload and has no impact on work/home conflict. Our findings suggest the importance of workplace characteristics as well as IT occupational culture in mitigating work exhaustion for IT employees.

Batching yields significant savings in access costs in sequential, tree structured, and random files. A direct and simple expression is developed for computing the average number of records/pages accessed to satisfy a batched query of a sequential tile. The advantages of batching for sequential and random files are discussed. A direct equation is provided for the number of nodes accessed in unhatched queries of hierarchical files. An exact recursive expression is developed for node accesses in batched queries of hierarchical files. In addition to the recursive relationship, good, closed-form upper- and lower-bound approximations are provided for the case of batched queries of hierarchical files.
