| 2026 | Object-centric process management: A research manifestoabstractBusiness process management employs process models and event logs to represent the behavior of the information systems under study. Traditional case-centric notions consider the order of activities and events in isolated process instances. The emerging field of object-centric processes challenges this assumption by putting objects in the center. Object-centric process mining and modeling approaches identify the structure of co-evolving data objects that influence the behavior of an information system to provide a comprehensive view of the system behavior. Object-centricity has been investigated independently in process modeling and in process mining, which resulted in the coexistence of seemingly contradictory assumptions and definitions. As a community effort, this research manifesto relates and aligns existing terminologies, definitions, and perspectives to provide a common ground for current and future research in object-centric business process management. Based on the current state of research, we propose a conceptualization that sets process models and event logs in relation to the information system’s behavior and the execution data it generates. The conceptualization aims at aligning different terminologies and, thus, providing a basis to model and analyze behavioral characteristics. Building on this common ground, we identify open research challenges along the most relevant research areas in object-centric process management. For each research area, its current status is investigated and an outline of the most relevant research challenges is presented. | 2025 | Resource allocation in business process executions - A systematic literature studyabstractTo achieve their goals, organizations execute business processes, which require effective allocation of resources to process activities. This results in the decision-making problem: Which resources should be allocated to which process activities? This problem significantly impacts both process efficiency and effectiveness. Over the past decades, various system-initiated (largely automated) resource allocation approaches have been developed. This study presents a comprehensive overview of this field by analyzing 61 primary studies identified through a rigorous, structured literature review covering publications from 1995 to 2023. We investigate resource allocation goals and cardinalities and describe how process models, execution data, and task attributes, as well as resource attributes, are used to specify the resource allocation problem. Additionally, the type of algorithmic solution and evaluation methods are discussed. This study shows that most approaches support 1-to-1 allocation cardinalities only, specify process-oriented goals, focus on process models, and utilize rule-based methods. Based on the results, we call for future research to define common terminology, support evidence-oriented resource allocation and adaptability, and improve reproducibility and comparability by performing benchmarking studies. | 2023 | Model-based decision support for knowledge-intensive processesabstractAbstract Process-aware information systems guide participants through the execution of processes. However, existing systems have limited support for knowledge-intensive processes, which are multi-variant and shaped by informed decisions of knowledge workers. Yet, making such decisions causes high cognitive load, as the effect of the decision on the future process execution must be considered. This may cause errors and/or slow down the process execution. We present an approach based on fragment-based Case Management. It supports the iterative decision making by (i) enabling knowledge workers to define goals and (ii) by giving recommendations on which decision outcomes align with the goals and which do not. For that, we use information from the process model and the running process instance. We show the technical feasibility with a proof-of-concept implementation and the value for knowledge workers in a preliminary user study. Anjo Seidel, Stephan Haarmann, Mathias Weske |

| 2021 | Seamless conceptual modeling of processes with transactional and analytical dataabstractIn the field of Business Process Management (BPM), modeling business processes and related data is a critical issue since process activities need to manage data stored in databases. The connection between processes and data is usually handled at the implementation level, even if modeling both processes and data at the conceptual level should help designers in improving business process models and identifying requirements for implementation. Especially in data- and decision-intensive contexts, business process activities need to access data stored both in databases and data warehouses. In this paper, we complete our approach for defining a novel conceptual view that bridges process activities and data. The proposed approach allows the designer to model the connection between business processes and database models and define the operations to perform, providing interesting insights on the overall connected perspective and hints for identifying activities that are crucial for decision support. | 2014 | Optimizing Event Pattern Matching Using Business Process ModelsabstractA growing number of enterprises use complex event processing for monitoring and controlling their operations, while business process models are used to document working procedures. In this work, we propose a comprehensive method for complex event processing optimization using business process models. Our proposed method is based on the extraction of behaviorial constraints that are used, in turn, to rewrite patterns for event detection, and select and transform execution plans. We offer a set of rewriting rules that is shown to be complete with respect to the$all$,$seq$, and$any$patterns. The effectiveness of our method is demonstrated in an experimental evaluation with a large number of processes from an insurance company. We illustrate that the proposed optimization leads to significant savings in query processing. By integrating the optimization in state-of-the-art systems for event pattern matching, we demonstrate that these savings materialize in different technical infrastructures and can be combined with existing optimization techniques.
