Pseudo Multi-view K-means ClusteringabstractClustering with k-means is well-established and efficient, but often struggles with complex data distributions because the clustering performance hinges on how well the centroids capture the data distribution, and conventional k-means usually fails to produce representative centroids under such conditions. To address this limitation, we propose Pseudo Multi-view K-means Clustering (PMKC), a novel framework that simulates a multi-view learning paradigm within a single-view setting by generating multiple soft k-means decompositions. Each decomposition can be treated as an individual view and investigates a distinct perspective of the data. Specifically, to encourage complementary structure, we impose an independence constraint among cluster centers, and to integrate these diverse clusterings, we model the soft assignment matrices as a third-order tensor and apply low-rank regularization to extract a shared latent structure. This design not only enhances clustering robustness but also improves the stability and consistency of the final results. Experimental results on several benchmark datasets demonstrate that PMKC achieves superior clustering performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. | 2026 | Point-SRA: Self-Representation Alignment for 3D Representation LearningabstractMasked autoencoders (MAE) have become a dominant paradigm in 3D representation learning, setting new performance benchmarks across various downstream tasks. Existing methods with fixed mask ratios neglect multi-level representational correlations and intrinsic geometric structures, while relying on point-wise reconstruction assumptions that conflict with the diversity of point cloud. To address these issues, we propose a 3D representation learning method, termed Point-SRA, which aligns representations through self-distillation and probabilistic modeling. Specifically, we assign different masking ratios to the MAE to capture complementary geometric and semantic information, while the MeanFlow Transformer (MFT) leverages cross-modal conditional embeddings to enable diverse probabilistic reconstruction. Our analysis further reveals that representations at different time steps in MFT also exhibit complementarity. Therefore, a Dual Self-Representation Alignment mechanism is proposed at both the MAE and MFT levels. Finally, we design a Flow-Conditioned Fine-Tuning Architecture to fully exploit the point cloud distribution learned via MeanFlow. Point-SRA outperforms Point-MAE by 5.37% on ScanObjectNN. On intracranial aneurysm segmentation, it reaches 96.07% mean IoU for arteries and 86.87% for aneurysms. For 3D object detection, Point-SRA achieves 47.3% AP@50, surpassing MaskPoint by 5.12%. | 2026 | Toward Real-Time UAV Tracking With Adaptive and Background-Aware Vision TransformersabstractIn Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) tracking, discriminative correlation filters (DCF) are popular for their speed, making them ideal for real-time use with limited resources. Recently, lightweight convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have offered a new approach. Through filter pruning, these CNNs maintain high accuracy and efficiency, making them a strong alternative, especially for greater precision. Despite these advancements, the potential of pure vision transformers (ViTs) in UAV tracking remains largely untapped, especially based on the paradigm of conditional computation. In this work, we introduce an adaptive and background-aware Vision Transformer (Aba-ViT) and leverage it to develop a real-time UAV tracking framework called Aba-ViTrack. The proposed Aba-ViT exploits an adaptive and background-aware token computation method to reduce inference time. This approach adaptively discards tokens based on learned halting probabilities, which a priori are higher for background tokens than target ones. To further improve efficiency, this paper proposes a novel classroom-style learning (CSL) approach, where robustness knowledge is transmitted vertically from teacher to students, and generalization capability is enhanced through horizontal mutual learning among students. This method is used to compress Aba-ViTrack, resulting in Aba-ViTrack++. The upgraded version achieves a better balance between accuracy and efficiency in real-time UAV tracking. This version achieves a better balance between accuracy and efficiency for real-time UAV tracking. Extensive experiments on six UAV tracking benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in UAV tracking. | 2026 | Point-RMAE: Reinforcement Masked Autoencoder for 3D Representation LearningabstractThe Mainstream 3D masked point modeling representation learning community typically employs predefined, fixed-ratio random or block masking strategies, aiming to obtain optimal representations and achieve high downstream performance. However, these empirical designs overlook the significant geometric information and structural importance differences that are inherent among different 3D points, leading to a suboptimal trade-off between the representation capture capabilities and reconstruction difficulty of such masking strategies. To address this issue, we are the first to present this decision-making problem to a reinforcement learning agent and propose a Reinforcement Masked Autoencoder for 3D representation learning, named Point-RMAE. Guided by geometric features as state factor, this method leverages the Masking Strategy Analyzer and the Dynamic Masking Generator to adaptively decide and apply the masking strategy during pretraining. The Masking Ratio Scheduling module dynamically adjusts the masking ratio based on the optimal strategy. Subsequently, the analyzer is updated by multiscale rewards derived from reconstruction quality level, distribution-aware feedback, and policy exploration. Notably, to enrich the Reward Function with distribution-aware signals and avoid decision collapse issue, we propose a Flow Matching Point Cloud Fast Generator that guides the selected masking decisions. Our method achieves outstanding performance across downstream tasks such as shape classification, medical diagnosis, object detection, action recognition, denoising and multiscale scene segmentation on ten popular 3D and 4D datasets. More importantly, Point-RMAE pioneers the application of reinforcement learning in 3D self-supervised representation learning. | 2026 | GLU-Net: Global-Local Fusion Network for Event-Based Monocular Depth Estimation via Uncertainty OptimizationabstractEvent-based monocular depth estimation is crucial for applications such as autonomous driving, obstacle avoidance, and navigation under high-speed scenarios. Events exhibit a unique and irregular modality. To adapt them to neural networks, some studies convert event streams into event voxels or other frame-like representations. However, these approaches tend to lose the temporal characteristics of events. In this study, we propose a network that aggregates global voxel and per-channel temporal local features of event voxels across the temporal dimension, explicitly extracting events’ temporal information. Furthermore, as noise in events can interfere with the training process and is more difficult to predict than that in images, we utilize the uncertainty estimation module to mitigate the impact of uncertain factors and enhance the robustness of the model. Additionally, we employ multi-level depth features for supervisory training, which improves prediction performance compared to methods relying solely on ground-truth depth supervision. Experiments on open source datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Our code can be found at https://github.com/WuShangjie/GLUNET . | 2025 | Boundary-Aware Temporal Dynamic Pseudo-Supervision Pairs Generation for Zero-Shot Natural Language Video LocalizationabstractZero-shot Natural Language Video Localization (NLVL) aims to automatically generate moments and corresponding pseudo queries from raw videos for the training of the localization model without any manual annotations. Existing approaches typically produce pseudo queries as simple words, which overlook the complexity of queries in real-world scenarios. Considering the powerful text modeling capabilities of large language models (LLMs), leveraging LLMs to generate complete queries that are closer to human descriptions is a potential solution. However, directly integrating LLMs into existing approaches introduces several issues, including insensitivity, isolation, and lack of regulation, which prevent the full exploitation of LLMs to enhance zero-shot NLVL performance. To address these issues, we propose BTDP, an innovative framework for Boundary-aware Temporal Dynamic Pseudo-supervision pairs generation. Our method contains two crucial operations: 1) Boundary Segmentation that identifies both visual boundaries and semantic boundaries to generate the atomic segments and activity descriptions, tackling the issue of insensitivity. 2) Context Aggregation that employs the LLMs with a self-evaluation process to aggregate and summarize global video information for optimized pseudo moment-query pairs, tackling the issue of isolation and lack of regulation. Comprehensive experimental results on the Charades-STA and ActivityNet Captions datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our BTDP method. | 2025 | SYKI-SVC: Advancing Singing Voice Conversion with Post-Processing Innovations and an Open-Source Professional TestsetabstractSinging voice conversion aims to transform a source singing voice into that of a target singer while preserving the original lyrics, melody, and various vocal techniques. In this paper, we propose a high-fidelity singing voice conversion system. Our system builds upon the SVCC T02 framework and consists of three key components: a feature extractor, a voice converter, and a post-processor. The feature extractor utilizes the ContentVec and Whisper models to derive F0 contours and extract speaker-independent linguistic features from the input singing voice. The voice converter then integrates the extracted timbre, F0, and linguistic content to synthesize the target speaker’s waveform. The post-processor augments high-frequency information directly from the source through simple and effective signal processing to enhance audio quality. Due to the lack of a standardized professional dataset for evaluating expressive singing conversion systems, we have created and made publicly available a specialized test set. Comparative evaluations demonstrate that our system achieves a remarkably high level of naturalness, and further analysis confirms the efficacy of our proposed system design. | 2025 | AVENet: Disentangling Features by Approximating Average Features for Voice ConversionabstractVoice conversion (VC) has made progress in feature disentanglement, but it is still difficult to balance timbre and content information. This paper evaluates the pre-trained model features commonly used in voice conversion, and proposes an innovative method for disentangling speech feature representations. Specifically, we first propose an ideal content feature, referred to as the average feature, which is calculated by averaging the features within frame-level aligned parallel speech (FAPS) data. For generating FAPS data, we utilize a technique that involves freezing the duration predictor in a Text-to-Speech system and manipulating speaker embedding. To fit the average feature on traditional VC datasets, we then design the AVENet to take features as input and generate closely matching average features. Experiments are conducted on the performance of AVENet-extracted features within a VC system. The experimental results demonstrate its superiority over multiple current speech feature disentangling methods. These findings affirm the effectiveness of our disentanglement approach. | 2025 | Multiple Rotation Averaging with Constrained Reweighting Deep Matrix FactorizationabstractMultiple rotation averaging plays a crucial role in computer vision and robotics domains. The conventional optimization-based methods optimize a nonlinear cost function based on certain noise assumptions, while most previous learning-based methods require ground truth labels in the supervised training process. Recognizing the handcrafted noise assumption may not be reasonable in all real-world scenarios, this paper proposes an effective rotation averaging method for mining data patterns in a learning manner while avoiding the requirement of labels. Specifically, we apply deep matrix factorization to directly solve the multiple rotation averaging problem in free linear space. For deep matrix factorization, we design a neural network model, which is explicitly low-rank and symmetric to better suit the background of multiple rotation averaging. Meanwhile, we utilize a spanning tree-based edge filtering to suppress the influence of rotation outliers. What's more, we also adopt a reweighting scheme and dynamic depth selection strategy to further improve the robustness. Our method synthesizes the merit of both optimization-based and learning-based methods. Experimental results on various datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed method. | 2025 | FACE: A Dual-Template and Adaptive Curriculum Framework for Unsupervised Text-Based Person SearchabstractText-Based Person Search, which aims to retrieve target pedestrian images using natural language descriptions, has garnered significant attention in multimedia research due to its potential in suspect retrieval and missing person identification. While supervised and weakly supervised methods rely on costly annotated training data, unsupervised TBPS eliminates the need for textual descriptions or identity annotations, presenting a more practical paradigm. Current unsupervised TBPS approaches face two primary challenges: 1) Predefined attribute templates for caption generation limit linguistic diversity and real-world adaptability, and 2) Threshold-based sample selection using pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs) introduces noisy pairs due to inadequate pedestrian-specific representation. To address these limitations, we propose FACE, a unified framework featuring Dual-template Caption Generation (DCG) and Adaptive Curriculum Training (ACT). The DCG module generates high-quality captions through complementary flexible-style (natural language) and fixed-style (attribute-enumerated) templates, enhanced by LLM-based noise filtering. The ACT framework progressively refines training through a self-improving loop: initial high-confidence sample selection using VLMs bootstraps the model, while evolving feature representations enable dynamic incorporation of harder samples through curriculum learning. This dual strategy achieves mutual reinforcement between caption quality and model discriminability. Extensive experiments on CUHK-PEDES, ICFG-PEDES and RSTPReid datasets under unsupervised settings demonstrate that our framework achieves the state-of-the-art performance. | 2025 | Graph Variational Multi-View ClusteringabstractMulti-view clustering (MVC) aims to extract consensus information from multi-source data and has developed rapidly. While generative model-based methods perform well by leveraging predefined priors, they often overlook inter-instance relationships, which are essential for high-quality clustering. To address this issue, we propose Graph Variational Multi-view Clustering (GVMVC), which integrates graph information into the generative process. Specifically, we treat both the original multi-view features and graph information from each view as observed data, guiding the learning of latent representations. The key principles of this approach are: 1) enhancing discriminative feature learning through graph integration, and 2) ensuring consistent multi-view learning via graph-based constraints. Extensive experiments show that GVMVC outperforms state-of-the-art methods across various datasets and metrics. Code is available at https://github.com/WenB777/GVMVC.git. | 2025 | Fusion of Explainable Deep Learning Features Using Fuzzy Integral in Computer VisionabstractFuzzy integral fusion has been shown as an effective tool for enhancing classification accuracy while also achieving explainability. With the deep learning boom in the past decade, many researchers have investigated the advantages of fusing various deep neural networks (DNNs) with fuzzy integral techniques in computer vision. However, recent studies focus on only the explainable fusion process. Thus, features learned by each DNN are difficult to understand. Moreover, DNNs are usually trained on the ImageNet dataset, whereas the effectiveness of applying the fuzzy integral methods to this dataset is yet to be investigated. This is the gap that motivates our research study. To address this issue, we explore fuzzy integral fusion classification models that make both the fusion process and extracted features explainable. Specifically, we use two well-known fuzzy integral fusion methods [i.e., Sugeno integral (SI) and Choquet integral (ChI)] to combine three explainable deep learning features (i.e., shape, texture, and color) in a manner that mimics the human visual recognition process. The originality of our work includes the emphasis on complete explainability in the classification process, the investigation of applying fuzzy integral methods to the ImageNet dataset, and extensive experimental validation of the effectiveness of fuzzy integral. Computational experiments show that fuzzy integral fusion can improve classification accuracy by 14.6% compared with an individual DNN on subsets derived from the ImageNet dataset. Furthermore, fuzzy integral fusion helps understand contributions, relationships, and interactions among the three features (shape, texture, and color) for each class, providing convincing evidence for the final classification result. Consequently, the proposed models not only achieve impressive performance, but also provide a thorough understanding of how these models work. Witold Pedrycz, Hisao Ishibuchi, Jihua Zhu

Causal Label EnhancementabstractLabel enhancement (LE) is still a challenging task to mitigate the dilemma of the lack of label distribution. Existing LE work typically focuses on primarily formulating a projection between feature space and label distribution space from discriminative model perspective, which preserves the relevance consistency that the sign of recovered label distribution should be consistent with the logical label. Different from previous algorithms, we formulate this problem from a causal perspective and present a novel LE method via the structured causal model (LESCM). Specifically, the proposed LESCM deliberates establishing the causal graph with assuming that label distribution is a cause of feature and logical label, which naturally satisfies the definition of label distribution learning (LDL). With capturing the underlying causal relationships, we can significantly boost the interpretability and identifiability of label enhancement. Meanwhile, except for the relevance consistency, LESCM are encouraged to sustain the order consistency that assigns higher description degree of the recovered label distribution to the positive labels, as compared with the negative labels. Empirically, sufficient experiments on several label distribution learning data sets validate the effectiveness of LESCM. Xinyuan Liu 0001, Jihua Zhu, Qinghai Zheng, Zhongyu Li 0002, Mingchen Zhu

A Novel Hierarchical Cross-Stream Aggregation Neural Network for Semantic Segmentation of 3-D Dental Surface ModelsabstractAccurate teeth delineation on 3-D dental models is essential for individualized orthodontic treatment planning. Pioneering works like PointNet suggest a promising direction to conduct efficient and accurate 3-D dental model analyses in end-to-end learnable fashions. Recent studies further imply that multistream architectures to concurrently learn geometric representations from different inputs/views (e.g., coordinates and normals) are beneficial for segmenting teeth with varying conditions. However, such multistream networks typically adopt simple late-fusion strategies to combine features captured from raw inputs that encode complementary but fundamentally different geometric information, potentially hampering their accuracy in end-to-end semantic segmentation. This article presents a hierarchical cross-stream aggregation (HiCA) network to learn more discriminative point/cell-wise representations from multiview inputs for fine-grained 3-D semantic segmentation. Specifically, based upon our multistream backbone with input-tailored feature extractors, we first design a contextual cross-steam aggregation (CA) module conditioned on interstream consistency to boost each view's contextual representation learning jointly. Then, before the late fusion of different streams' outputs for segmentation, we further deploy a discriminative cross-stream aggregation (DA) module to concurrently update all views' discriminative representation learning by leveraging a specific graph attention strategy induced by multiview prototype learning. On both public and in-house datasets of real-patient dental models, our method significantly outperformed state-of-the-art (SOTA) deep learning methods for teeth semantic segmentation. In addition, extended experimental results suggest the applicability of HiCA to other general 3-D shape segmentation tasks. The code is available at https://github.com/ladderlab-xjtu/HiCA. | 2025 | Neighbor-Based Completion for Addressing Incomplete Multiview ClusteringabstractDriven by the complementarity and consistency inherent in multiview data, multiview clustering (MVC) has garnered widespread attention in various domains. Real-world data often encounters the issue of missing information, leading to a surge of interest in the domain of incomplete MVC (IMVC). Despite existing approaches having made significant progress in addressing IMVC, two significant challenges persist: 1) many alignment-based methodologies tend to overlook the topological relationships among instances and 2) the view representations based on completion lack reconstructive properties, casting doubt on their alignment with the actual view representations. In response, we present a novel approach termed neighbor-based completion for addressing IMVC (NBIMVC), which capitalizes on the topological information among instances and the consistent information across views. Specifically, our method uses autoencoders to learn feature representations for each view and leverages nearest-neighbor relationships between unique and complete instances to complete missing features in missing views. Subsequently, we enforce hard negative alignment constraints on complete paired instances in the feature space. Finally, we ensure the consistency of views in the semantic space by employing cluster information and a shared clustering network, which facilitates the final multiview categories output and effectively resolves the IMVC problem. Extensive experimental evaluations validate the efficacy of our proposed method, showcasing comparable or superior performance to existing approaches. | 2024 | Watch Your Head: Assembling Projection Heads to Save the Reliability of Federated ModelsabstractFederated learning encounters substantial challenges with heterogeneous data, leading to performance degradation and convergence issues. While considerable progress has been achieved in mitigating such an impact, the reliability aspect of federated models has been largely disregarded. In this study, we conduct extensive experiments to investigate the reliability of both generic and personalized federated models. Our exploration uncovers a significant finding: federated models exhibit unreliability when faced with heterogeneous data, demonstrating poor calibration on in-distribution test data and low uncertainty levels on out-of-distribution data. This unreliability is primarily attributed to the presence of biased projection heads, which introduce miscalibration into the federated models. Inspired by this observation, we propose the "Assembled Projection Heads" (APH) method for enhancing the reliability of federated models. By treating the existing projection head parameters as priors, APH randomly samples multiple initialized parameters of projection heads from the prior and further performs targeted fine-tuning on locally available data under varying learning rates. Such a head ensemble introduces parameter diversity into the deterministic model, eliminating the bias and producing reliable predictions via head averaging. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed APH method across three prominent federated benchmarks. Experimental results validate the efficacy of APH in model calibration and uncertainty estimation. Notably, APH can be seamlessly integrated into various federated approaches but only requires less than 30% additional computation cost for 100x inferences within large models. | 2024 | Hyperbolic Image-and-Pointcloud Contrastive Learning for 3D Classificationabstract3D contrastive representation learning has exhibited remarkable efficacy across various downstream tasks. However, existing contrastive learning paradigms based on cosine similarity fail to deeply explore the potential intra-modal hierarchical and cross-modal semantic correlations about multi-modal data in Euclidean space. In response, we seek solutions in hyperbolic space and propose a hyperbolic image-and-pointcloud contrastive learning method (HyperIPC). For the intra-modal branch, we rely on the intrinsic geometric structure to explore the hyperbolic embedding representation of point cloud to capture invariant features. For the cross-modal branch, we leverage images to guide the point cloud in establishing strong semantic hierarchical correlations. Empirical experiments underscore the outstanding classification performance of HyperIPC. Notably, HyperIPC enhances object classification results by 2.8% and few-shot classification outcomes by 5.9% on ScanObjectNN compared to the baseline. Furthermore, ablation studies and confirmatory testing validate the rationality of HyperIPC’s parameter settings and the effectiveness of its submodules. Naiwen Hu, Haozhe Cheng, Jihua Zhu

Revisiting Unsupervised Temporal Action Localization: The Primacy of High-Quality Actionness and PseudolabelsabstractRecently, temporal action localization (TAL) methods, especially the weakly-supervised and unsupervised ones, have become a hot research topic. Existing unsupervised methods follow an iterative ''clustering and training'' strategy with diverse model designs during training stage, while they often overlook maintaining consistency between these stages, which is crucial: more accurate clustering results can reduce the noises of pseudolabels and thus enhance model training, while more robust training can in turn enrich clustering feature representation. We identify two critical challenges in unsupervised scenarios: 1. What features should the model generate for clustering? 2. Which pseudolabeled instances from clustering should be chosen for model training? After extensive explorations, we proposed a novel yet simple framework called Consistency-Oriented Progressive high actionness Learning to address these issues. For feature generation, our framework adopts a High Actionness snippet Selection (HAS) module to generate more discriminative global video features for clustering from the enhanced actionness features obtained from a designed Inner-Outer Consistency Network (IOCNet). For pseudolabel selection, we introduces a Progressive Learning With Representative Instances (PLRI) strategy to identify the most reliable and informative instances within each cluster for model training. These three modules, HAS, IOCNet, and PLRI, synergistically improve consistency in model training and clustering performance. Extensive experiments on THUMOS'14 and ActivityNet v1.2 datasets under both unsupervised and weakly-supervised settings demonstrate that our framework achieves the state-of-the-art results. Mandarin Stuttering Event Detection (MSED) aims to detect instances of stuttering events in Mandarin speech. We propose a detailed acoustic analysis method to improve the accuracy of stutter detection by capturing subtle nuances that previous Stuttering Event Detection (SED) techniques have overlooked. To this end, we introduce the Fine-Grained Contrastive Learning (FGCL) framework for MSED. | 2024 | 3DMNDT: 3D Multi-View Registration Method Based on the Normal Distributions TransformabstractThe normal distributions transform (NDT) is an effective paradigm for point set registration. This method was initially designed for pair-wise registration and suffers from the accumulated error problem when directly applied to multi-view registration. Under the framework of point-to-cluster correspondence, this paper proposes a novel multi-view registration method named 3D multi-view registration based on the normal distributions transform (3DMNDT), which integrates the k-means clustering and Lie algebra optimizer to achieve multi-view registration. More specifically, the multi-view registration is cast into the maximum likelihood estimation problem. Firstly, k-means clustering is utilized to divide all data points into different clusters, where one normal distribution is computed to locally model the probability of measuring a data point in each cluster. Subsequently, the multi-view registration problem is formulated by the NDT-based likelihood function. To maximize this likelihood function, the Lie algebra optimizer is introduced and developed to optimize each rigid transformation sequentially. 3DMNDT implements data point clustering, NDT computing, and rigid transformation optimization alternately until the desired registration results are obtained. Experimental results tested on benchmark data sets illustrate that 3DMNDT can achieve state-of-the-art performance for multi-view registration. Note to Practitioners—This paper is motivated by solving the problem of registering multiple point sets. The normal distributions transform (NDT) is a well-known pair-wise registration method widely applied in the robotic domain. This paper extends the original NDT and proposes a novel registration method to simultaneously align more than two point sets. The multi-view registration is cast into the maximum likelihood estimation problem. Subsequently, the k-means clustering and Lie algebra optimizer are integrated to estimate registration parameters. Experimental results demonstrate its superior performance on the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness for multi-view registration of point sets. | 2024 | PTM: Torus Masking for 3D Representation Learning Guided by Robust and Trusted Teachersabstract3D Masked Point Modeling (MPM) typically involves randomly or blockly discarding points or patches and then reconstructing them, offering a promising avenue for exploring geometric representation. By surveying current masking strategies, we have found that random-masked regions are provided with excessive context, reducing modeling difficulty but impeding knowledge transfer. While, block-masked regions lack sufficient guidance, resulting in significant generated noise. To address these issues, we propose PTM, a novel Transformer-style 3D MPM method employing a torus masking strategy. Specifically, a high-density area is chosen as the masked region, forming a torus by retaining small-radius neighborhoods around the center point. To mitigate torus modeling noise, the designed robust teacher model captures density scale to construct noise embedding, utilizing a reverse fit function for reconstruction assistance. Furthermore, the proposed trusted teacher model defines the multi-modal global descriptor as subjective evidence. On a semantic level, we form semi-subjective trusted evidence to guide reconstruction by evaluating the contribution of each subjective evidence to 3D representation. Downstream fine-tuning tasks validate the state-of-the-art performance of PTM in multi-scale point cloud classification and segmentation. | 2024 | Ultrasound Nodule Segmentation Using Asymmetric Learning With Simple Clinical AnnotationabstractRecent advances in deep learning have greatly facilitated the automated segmentation of ultrasound images, which is essential for nodule morphological analysis. Nevertheless, most existing methods depend on extensive and precise annotations by domain experts, which are labor-intensive and time-consuming. In this study, we suggest using simple aspect ratio annotations directly from ultrasound clinical diagnoses for automated nodule segmentation. Especially, an asymmetric learning framework is developed by extending the aspect ratio annotations with two types of pseudo labels, i.e., conservative labels and radical labels, to train two asymmetric segmentation networks simultaneously. Subsequently, a conservative-radical-balance strategy (CRBS) strategy is proposed to complementally combine radical and conservative labels. An inconsistency-aware dynamically mixed pseudo-labels supervision (IDMPS) module is introduced to address the challenges of over-segmentation and under-segmentation caused by the two types of labels. To further leverage the spatial prior knowledge provided by clinical annotations, we also present a novel loss function namely the clinical anatomy prior loss. Extensive experiments on two clinically collected ultrasound datasets (thyroid and breast) demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed method, which can achieve comparable and even better performance than fully supervised methods using ground truth annotations. | 2024 | HECPG: Hyperbolic Embedding and Confident Patch-Guided Network for Point Cloud MatchingabstractAs a fundamental problem in photogrammetry and remote sensing, terrestrial laser scanner point cloud matching aims to seek a correspondence set that can match two partially overlapping point clouds. However, existing methods suffer from poor performance when dealing with low overlapping scenarios, and they also lack the ability to effectively utilize cross-space information. In this paper, we propose a novel Hyperbolic Embedding and Confident Patch-Guided network (HECPG) for point cloud matching. Our method leverages hyperbolic information to enhance feature representations and suppresses the effects of non-overlapping regions through confidence guidance. Specifically, we first introduce the hyperbolic attention, which effectively incorporates hyperbolic information into point cloud matching by leveraging the inherent hierarchical structure of point clouds. Additionally, we propose a confident patch search module that assigns a confidence score to each patch point. This helps to suppress outlier correspondences that may arise in non-overlapping regions. Once we have obtained a set of high-precision point correspondences, we use the RANSAC algorithm to estimate the alignment transform for rigid point cloud registration. Extensive experiments on indoor, outdoor, and synthetic benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of our HECPG. Code will be available at https://github.com/IvanXie416/HECPG. | 2024 | Semi-Supervised Thyroid Nodule Detection in Ultrasound VideosabstractDeep learning techniques have been investigated for the computer-aided diagnosis of thyroid nodules in ultrasound images. However, most existing thyroid nodule detection methods were simply based on static ultrasound images, which cannot well explore spatial and temporal information following the clinical examination process. In this paper, we propose a novel video-based semi-supervised framework for ultrasound thyroid nodule detection. Especially, considering clinical examinations that need to detect thyroid nodules at the ultrasonic probe positions, we first construct an adjacent frame guided detection backbone network by using adjacent supporting reference frames. To further reduce the labour-intensive thyroid nodule annotation in ultrasound videos, we extend the video-based detection in a semi-supervised manner by using both labeled and unlabeled videos. Based on the detection consistency in sequential neighbouring frames, a pseudo label adaptation strategy is proposed for the refinement of unpredicted frames. The proposed framework is validated on 996 transverse viewed and 1088 longitudinal viewed ultrasound videos. | 2023 | 3D-TOGO: Towards Text-Guided Cross-Category 3D Object GenerationabstractText-guided 3D object generation aims to generate 3D objects described by user-defined captions, which paves a flexible way to visualize what we imagined. Although some works have been devoted to solving this challenging task, these works either utilize some explicit 3D representations (e.g., mesh), which lack texture and require post-processing for rendering photo-realistic views; or require individual time-consuming optimization for every single case. Here, we make the first attempt to achieve generic text-guided cross-category 3D object generation via a new 3D-TOGO model, which integrates a text-to-views generation module and a views-to-3D generation module. The text-to-views generation module is designed to generate different views of the target 3D object given an input caption. prior-guidance, caption-guidance and view contrastive learning are proposed for achieving better view-consistency and caption similarity. Meanwhile, a pixelNeRF model is adopted for the views-to-3D generation module to obtain the implicit 3D neural representation from the previously-generated views. Our 3D-TOGO model generates 3D objects in the form of the neural radiance field with good texture and requires no time-cost optimization for every single caption. Besides, 3D-TOGO can control the category, color and shape of generated 3D objects with the input caption. Extensive experiments on the largest 3D object dataset (i.e., ABO) are conducted to verify that 3D-TOGO can better generate high-quality 3D objects according to the input captions across 98 different categories, in terms of PSNR, SSIM, LPIPS and CLIP-score, compared with text-NeRF and Dreamfields. | 2023 | VITS-Based Singing Voice Conversion System with DSPGAN Post-Processing for SVCC2023abstractThis paper presents the T02 team’s system for the Singing Voice Conversion Challenge 2023 (SVCC2023). Our system entails a VITS-based SVC model, incorporating three modules: a feature extractor, a voice converter, and a postprocessor. Specifically, the feature extractor provides F0 contours and extracts speaker-independent linguistic content from the input singing voice by leveraging a HuBERT model. The voice converter is employed to recompose the speaker timbre, F0, and linguistic content to generate the waveform of the target speaker. Besides, to further improve the audio quality, a fine-tuned DSPGAN vocoder is introduced to resynthesise the waveform. Given the limited target speaker data, we utilize a two-stage training strategy to adapt the base model to the target speaker. During model adaptation, several tricks, such as data augmentation and joint training with auxiliary singer data, are involved. Official challenge results show that our system achieves superior performance, especially in the cross-domain task, ranking 1st and 2nd in naturalness and similarity, respectively. Further ablation justifies the effectiveness of our system design. Yiquan Zhou, Jihua Zhu, Weifeng Zhao

Label Information Bottleneck for Label EnhancementabstractIn this work, we focus on the challenging problem of Label Enhancement (LE), which aims to exactly recover label distributions from logical labels, and present a novel Label Information Bottleneck (LIB) method for LE. For the recovery process of label distributions, the label irrelevant information contained in the dataset may lead to unsatisfactory recovery performance. To address this limitation, we make efforts to excavate the essential label relevant information to improve the recovery performance. Our method formulates the LE problem as the following two joint processes: 1) learning the representation with the essential label relevant information, 2) recovering label distributions based on the learned representation. The label relevant information can be excavated based on the “bottleneck” formed by the learned representation. Significantly, both the label relevant information about the label assignments and the label relevant information about the label gaps can be explored in our method. Evaluation experiments conducted on several benchmark label distribution learning datasets verify the effectiveness and competitiveness of LIB. | 2023 | Contrastive Label EnhancementabstractLabel distribution learning (LDL) is a new machine learning paradigm for solving label ambiguity. Since it is difficult to directly obtain label distributions, many studies are focusing on how to recover label distributions from logical labels, dubbed label enhancement (LE). Existing LE methods estimate label distributions by simply building a mapping relationship between features and label distributions under the supervision of logical labels. They typically overlook the fact that both features and logical labels are descriptions of the instance from different views. Therefore, we propose a novel method called Contrastive Label Enhancement (ConLE) which integrates features and logical labels into the unified projection space to generate high-level features by contrastive learning strategy. In this approach, features and logical labels belonging to the same sample are pulled closer, while those of different samples are projected farther away from each other in the projection space. Subsequently, we leverage the obtained high-level features to gain label distributions through a well-designed training strategy that considers the consistency of label attributes. | 2023 | Towards Fast and Stable Federated Learning: Confronting Heterogeneity via Knowledge AnchorabstractFederated learning encounters a critical challenge of data heterogeneity, adversely affecting the performance and convergence of the federated model. Various approaches have been proposed to address this issue, yet their effectiveness is still limited. Recent studies have revealed that the federated model suffers severe forgetting in local training, leading to global forgetting and performance degradation. Although the analysis provides valuable insights, a comprehensive understanding of the vulnerable classes and their impact factors is yet to be established. In this paper, we aim to bridge this gap by systematically analyzing the forgetting degree of each class during local training across different communication rounds. Our observations are: (1) Both missing and non-dominant classes suffer similar severe forgetting during local training, while dominant classes show improvement in performance. (2) When dynamically reducing the sample size of a dominant class, catastrophic forgetting occurs abruptly when the proportion of its samples is below a certain threshold, indicating that the local model struggles to leverage a few samples of a specific class effectively to prevent forgetting. Motivated by these findings, we propose a novel and straightforward algorithm called Federated Knowledge Anchor (FedKA). Assuming that all clients have a single shared sample for each class, the knowledge anchor is constructed before each local training stage by extracting shared samples for missing classes and randomly selecting one sample per class for non-dominant classes. The knowledge anchor is then utilized to correct the gradient of each mini-batch towards the direction of preserving the knowledge of the missing and non-dominant classes. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed FedKA achieves fast and stable convergence, significantly improving accuracy on popular benchmarks. | 2023 | Graph-Guided Unsupervised Multiview Representation LearningabstractWithout the valuable label information to guide the learning process, it is demanding to fully excavate and integrate the underlying information from different views to learn the unified multi-view representation. This paper focuses on this challenge and presents a novel method, termed Graph-guided Unsupervised Multi-view Representation Learning (GUMRL), taking full advantage of multi-view graph information during the learning process. To be specific, GUMRL jointly conducts the view-specific feature representation learning, which is under the guidance of graph information, and the unified feature representation learning, which fuses the underlying graph information of different views to learn the desired unified multi-view feature representation. Regarding downstream tasks, such as clustering and classification, the classic single-view algorithms can be directly performed on the learned unified multi-view representation. The designed objective function is effectively optimized based on an alternating direction minimization method, and experiments conducted on six real-world multi-view datasets show the effectiveness and competitiveness of our GUMRL, compared to several state-of-the-art methods. | 2023 | Dynamic Slimmable Denoising NetworkabstractRecently, tremendous human-designed and automatically searched neural networks have been applied to image denoising. However, previous works intend to handle all noisy images in a pre-defined static network architecture, which inevitably leads to high computational complexity for good denoising quality. Here, we present a dynamic slimmable denoising network (DDS-Net), a general method to achieve good denoising quality with less computational complexity, via dynamically adjusting the channel configurations of networks at test time with respect to different noisy images. Our DDS-Net is empowered with the ability of dynamic inference by a dynamic gate, which can predictively adjust the channel configuration of networks with negligible extra computation cost. To ensure the performance of each candidate sub-network and the fairness of the dynamic gate, we propose a three-stage optimization scheme. In the first stage, we train a weight-shared slimmable super network. In the second stage, we evaluate the trained slimmable super network in an iterative way and progressively tailor the channel numbers of each layer with minimal denoising quality drop. By a single pass, we can obtain several sub-networks with good performance under different channel configurations. In the last stage, we identify easy and hard samples in an online way and train a dynamic gate to predictively select the corresponding sub-network with respect to different noisy images. Extensive experiments demonstrate our DDS-Net consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art individually trained static denoising networks. | 2023 | Label Distribution Learning by Maintaining Label Ranking RelationabstractLabel distribution learning (LDL) is a novel machine learning paradigm that can be seen as an extension of multi-label learning (MLL). Compared with MLL, the advantages of LDL are reflected in the following perspectives: (1) the label distribution gives the relevance description of each label to unknown instances in quantitative terms; (2) the distribution implicitly gives the relevance intensities relation of different labels to a particular instance in qualitative terms, i.e., the label ranking relation. All existing LDL models aim to fit the ground-truth label distribution by quantitatively minimizing the distance between distributions or maximizing the similarity between distributions, which only uses the first advantage of the label distribution but ignores the label ranking relation, which may lose some useful semantic information implied in the label distribution, thus reducing the performance of LDL. Therefore, we propose a novel algorithm to solve this problem by introducing the ranking loss function to LDL. In addition, in order to evaluate the LDL algorithms more comprehensively and verify that the ranking loss is beneficial for keeping the label ranking relation, we also introduce two popular ranking evaluation metrics for LDL. | 2023 | Generalized Label Enhancement With Sample CorrelationsabstractRecently, label distribution learning (LDL) has drawn much attention in machine learning, where LDL model is learned from labelel instances. Different from single-label and multi-label annotations, label distributions describe the instance by multiple labels with different intensities and accommodate to more general scenes. Since most existing machine learning datasets merely provide logical labels, label distributions are unavailable in many real-world applications. To handle this problem, we propose two novel label enhancement methods, i.e., Label Enhancement with Sample Correlations (LESC) and generalized Label Enhancement with Sample Correlations (gLESC). More specifically, LESC employs a low-rank representation of samples in the feature space, and gLESC leverages a tensor multi-rank minimization to further investigate the sample correlations in both the feature space and label space. Benefitting from the sample correlations, the proposed methods can boost the performance of label enhancement. | 2023 | What You Like, What I Am: Online Dating Recommendation via Matching Individual Preferences With FeaturesabstractDating recommendation becomes a critical task since the rapid development of online dating sites and it is beneficial for users to find their ideal relationships from a large number of registered members. Different users usually have different tastes when choosing their dating partners. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish the users personal features and preferences in dating recommendation methods. However, present approaches dont capture enough user preferences from social graph and attribute data. They also ignore user attributes, which is the complementary and consistent side information of user social graphs. In this paper, we propose a Matching Individual Preferences with Features (MIPF) model to recommend dating partners jointly using user attributes and social graphs. We aim to model user features and preferences to identify what the user has and what the user likes. We also distinguish user preferences into explicit preferences and implicit preferences. The implicit preferences are mined from social graphs, while the explicit preferences are captured from the social links. Additionally, convolutional neural networks are used to extract the latent non-linear information in user attributes. | 2023 | Joint Reason Generation and Rating Prediction for Explainable RecommendationabstractMost recommendation systems focus on predicting rating or finding aspect information in reviews to understand user preferences and item properties. However, these methods ignore the effectiveness and persuasiveness of recommendation results. Consequently, explainable recommendation, namely providing recommendation results with recommendation reasons at the same time, has attracted increasing attention of researchers due to its ability in fostering transparency and trust. It is lucky that some E-commerce websites provide a kind of new interaction box called Tips and users can express their comments on items with a simple sentence. This brings us an opportunity to realize explainable recommendation. Under the supervision of two explicit feedback, namely rating and textual tips, we can implement a multi-task learning model which can provide recommendation results and generate recommendation reasons at the same time. In this paper, we propose an Encoder-Decoder and Multi-Layer Perception (MLP) based Explainable Recommendation model named EMER to simultaneously implement reason generation and rating prediction. Items title contains significant product-related information and plays an important role in grabbing users attention, so we fuse it in our model to generate recommendation reasons. | 2023 | Toward Source-Free Cross Tissues Histopathological Cell Segmentation via Target-Specific FinetuningabstractRecognition and quantitative analytics of histopathological cells are the golden standard for diagnosing multiple cancers. Despite recent advances in deep learning techniques that have been widely investigated for the automated segmentation of various types of histopathological cells, the heavy dependency on specific histopathological image types with sufficient supervised annotations, as well as the limited access to clinical data in hospitals, still pose significant challenges in the application of computer-aided diagnosis in pathology. In this paper, we focus on the model generalization of cell segmentation towards cross-tissue histopathological images. Remarkably, a novel target-specific finetuning-based self-supervised domain adaptation framework is proposed to transfer the cell segmentation model to unlabeled target datasets, without access to source datasets and annotations. When performed on the target unlabeled histopathological image set, the proposed method only needs to tune very few parameters of the pre-trained model in a self-supervised manner. Considering the morphological properties of pathological cells, we introduce two constraint terms at both local and global levels into this framework to access more reliable predictions. The proposed cross-domain framework is validated on three different types of histopathological tissues, showing promising performance in self-supervised cell segmentation. Additionally, the whole framework can be further applied to clinical tools in pathology without accessing the original training image data. | 2023 | AnyoneNet: Synchronized Speech and Talking Head Generation for Arbitrary PersonsabstractAutomatically generating videos in which synthesized speech is synchronized with lip movements in a talking head has great potential in many human-computer interaction scenarios. In this paper, we present an automatic method to generate synchronized speech and talking-head videos on the basis of text and a single face image of an arbitrary person as input. In contrast to previous text-driven talking head generation methods, which can only synthesize the voice of a specific person, the proposed method is capable of synthesizing speech for any person. Specifically, the proposed method decomposes the generation of synchronized speech and talking head videos into two stages, i.e., a text-to-speech (TTS) stage and a speech-driven talking head generation stage. The proposed TTS module is a face-conditioned multi-speaker TTS model that gets the speaker identity information from face images instead of speech, which allows us to synthesize a personalized voice on the basis of the input face image. To generate the talking head videos from the face images, a facial landmark-based method that can predict both lip movements and head rotations is proposed. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is able to generate synchronized speech and talking head videos for arbitrary persons, in which the timbre of the synthesized voice is in harmony with the input face, and the proposed landmark-based talking head method outperforms the state-of-the-art landmark-based method on generating natural talking head videos. | 2022 | Coarse-to-Fine Generative Modeling for Graphic LayoutsabstractEven though graphic layout generation has attracted growing attention recently, it is still challenging to synthesis realistic and diverse layouts, due to the complicated element relationships and varied element arrangements. In this work, we seek to improve the performance of layout generation by incorporating the concept of regions, which consist of a smaller number of elements and appears like a simple layout, into the generation process. Specifically, we leverage Variational Autoencoder (VAE) as the overall architecture and decompose the decoding process into two stages. The first stage predicts representations for regions, and the second stage fills in the detailed position for each element within the region based on the predicted region representation. Compared to prior studies that merely abstract the layout into a list of elements and generate all the element positions in one go, our approach has at least two advantages. First, by the two-stage decoding, our approach decouples the complex layout generation task into several simple layout generation tasks, which reduces the problem difficulty. Second, the predicted regions can help the model roughly know what the graphic layout looks like and serve as global context to improve the generation of detailed element positions. Qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms the existing methods, especially on the complex graphic layouts. | 2022 | C-CAM: Causal CAM for Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation on Medical ImageabstractRecently, many excellent weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) works are proposed based on class activation mapping (CAM). However, there are few works that consider the characteristics of medical images. In this paper, we find that there are mainly two challenges of medical images in WSSS: i) the boundary of object foreground and background is not clear; ii) the co-occurrence phenomenon is very severe in training stage. We thus propose a Causal CAM (C-CAM) method to overcome the above challenges. Our method is motivated by two cause-effect chains including category-causality chain and anatomy-causality chain. The category-causality chain represents the image content (cause) affects the category (effect). The anatomy-causality chain represents the anatomical structure (cause) affects the organ segmentation (effect). Extensive experiments were conducted on three public medical image data sets. Our C-CAM generates the best pseudo masks with the DSC of 77.26%, 80.34% and 78.15% on ProMRI, ACDC and CHAOS compared with other CAM-like methods. The pseudo masks of C-CAM are further used to improve the segmentation performance for organ segmentation tasks. Our C-CAM achieves DSC of 83.83% on ProMRI and DSC of 87.54% on ACDC, which outperforms state-of-the-art WSSS methods. Our code is available at https://github.com/Tian-lab/C-CAM. | 2022 | Collaborative Unsupervised Multi-View Representation LearningabstractIn this paper, we delve into the challenging problem in multi-view learning, namely unsupervised multi-view representation learning, the goal of which is to effectively integrate information from multiple views and learn the unified feature representation with comprehensive information in an unsupervised manner. Despite the progress attained in recent years, it is still a challenging issue since the correlations across multiple views are complex and difficult to model during the learning process, especially in the absence of label information. To address this problem, we introduce a novel method, termed Collaborative Unsupervised Multi-view Representation Learning (CUMRL), which benefits from the high-order view correlations of multi-view data by introducing a collaborative learning strategy. Specifically, the low-rank tensor constraint is employed and plays the role of a bridge, which links the view-specific compact learning and unified representation learning in CUMRL. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and competitiveness of the multi-view representation achieved by the proposed method for different learning tasks, compared to several state-of-the-art methods. | 2022 | Caption Generation From Road Images for Traffic Scene ModelingabstractIn this traffic-scene-modeling study, we propose an image-captioning network which incorporates element attention into an encoder-decoder mechanism to generate more reasonable scene captions. A visual-relationship-detecting network is also developed to detect the relative positions of object pairs. Firstly, the traffic scene elements are detected and segmented according to their clustered locations. Then, the image-captioning network is applied to generate the corresponding description of each traffic scene element. The visual-relationship-detecting network is utilized to detect the position relations of all object pairs in the subregion. The static and dynamic traffic elements are appropriately selected and organized to construct a 3D model according to the captions and the position relations. The reconstructed 3D traffic scenes can be utilized for the offline test of unmanned vehicles. The evaluations and comparisons based on the TSD-max, KITTI and Microsoft’s COCO datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Yaochen Li, Yuehu Liu, Jihua Zhu

Multi-Level Query Interaction for Temporal Language GroundingabstractUnderstanding what is happening in the surveillance video is important for human-machine interface in transportation systems, where temporal language grounding is one of the key tasks, targeting at localizing the desired moment in an untrimmed video with a given sentence query that is relevant to the moment. This task is challenging due to the following reasons: 1) the requirement of understanding the video contents and query semantics comprehensively, and 2) building the bridge between the cross-modal semantics. To tackle these problems, early methods first sample video clips and then match them with the sentence to find the most relevant one. To reduce the computational complexity associated with video clip sampling, recent methods directly predict the temporal boundaries of the desired moment on the fused features of the sentence and the video frames. However, all the previous methods often learn the word-level or phrase-level features of the sentence, or directly generates the global sentence representation by attention mechanisms or graph network. However, we argue that applying only word-level or phrase-level semantic information and cross-modal interactions is not enough to fully capture the correspondence between the video and the query. To this end, we proposed a novel Multi-level Query Exploration and Interaction (MQEI) model, which explores the semantics in both the word- and phrase-level and captures the multi-level interactions between the video and the query through an attention module. Extensive experiments on two public benchmark datasets ActivityNet Captions and Charades-STA demonstrate that the proposed model can outperform all the state-of-the-art methods consistently. | 2022 | Frame-Wise Cross-Modal Matching for Video Moment RetrievalabstractVideo moment retrieval targets at retrieving a golden moment in a video for a given natural language query. The main challenges of this task include 1) the requirement of accurately localizing (i.e., the start time and the end time of) the relevant moment in an untrimmed video stream, and 2) bridging the semantic gap between textual query and video contents. To tackle those problems, early approaches adopt the sliding window or uniform sampling to collect video clips first and then match each clip with the query to identify relevant clips. Obviously, these strategies are time-consuming and often lead to unsatisfied accuracy in localization due to the unpredictable length of the golden moment. To avoid the limitations, researchers recently attempt to directly predict the relevant moment boundaries without the requirement to generate video clips first. One mainstream approach is to generate a multimodal feature vector for the target query and video frames (e.g., concatenation) and then use a regression approach upon the multimodal feature vector for boundary detection. Although some progress has been achieved by this approach, we argue that those methods have not well captured the cross-modal interactions between the query and video frames. In this paper, we propose an Attentive Cross-modal Relevance Matching (ACRM) model which predicts the temporal boundaries based on an interaction modeling between two modalities. In addition, an attention module is introduced to automatically assign higher weights to query words with richer semantic cues, which are considered to be more important for finding relevant video contents. Another contribution is that we propose an additional predictor to utilize the internal frames in the model training to improve the localization accuracy. Extensive experiments on two public datasets TACoS and Charades-STA demonstrate the superiority of our method over several state-of-the-art methods. Ablation studies have been also conducted to examine the effectiveness of different modules in our ACRM model. Haoyu Tang 0002, Jihua Zhu, Meng Liu 0006, Zan Gao 0001, Zhiyong Cheng 0001

Unsupervised Fuzzy Neural Network for Image ClusteringabstractFuzzy systems have proven to be an effective tool for classification and regression. However, they have been mainly applied to supervised tasks. In this paper, we extend fuzzy systems to tackle unsupervised problems based on the manifold regularization framework and convolution/pooling technologies. The proposed fuzzy system, referred to as the unsupervised fuzzy neural network, can extract features from raw images accurately and perform well on image clustering. The main structure of the proposed approach is divided into three parts: fuzzy mapping, unsupervised feature extraction and manifold representation. We adopt K-means to perform clustering in the low-dimensional manifold space. Experimental results on image datasets demonstrate that our approach is competitive with classical and state-of-the-art algorithms. | 2021 | Robust Motion Averaging under Maximum Correntropy CriterionabstractRecently, the motion averaging method has been introduced as an effective means to solve the multi-view registration problem. This method aims to recover global motions from a set of relative motions, where the original method is sensitive to outliers due to using the Frobenius norm error in the optimization. Accordingly, this paper proposes a novel robust motion averaging method based on the maximum correntropy criterion (MCC). Specifically, the correntropy measure is used instead of utilizing Frobenius norm error to improve the robustness of motion averaging against outliers. According to the half-quadratic technique, the correntropy measure based optimization problem can be solved by the alternating minimization procedure, which includes operations of weight assignment and weighted motion averaging. Further, we design a selection strategy of adaptive kernel width to take advantage of correntropy. Experimental results on benchmark data sets illustrate that our method has superior performance on accuracy and robustness for multi-view registration. What’s more, it can be applied to robot mapping. Jihua Zhu, Huimin Lu 0001, Badong Chen, Zhongyu Li 0002, Yaochen Li

Learning Fine-Grained Semantics in Spoken Language Using Visual GroundingabstractIn the case of unwritten languages, acoustic models cannot be trained in the standard way, i.e., using speech and textual transcriptions. Recently, several methods have been proposed to learn speech representations using images, i.e., using visual grounding. Existing studies have focused on scene images. Here, we investigate whether fine-grained semantic information, reflecting the relationship between attributes and objects, can be learned from spoken language. To this end, a Fine-grained Semantic Embedding Network (FSEN) for learning semantic representations of spoken language grounded by fine-grained images is proposed. For training, we propose an efficient objective function, which includes a matching constraint, an adversarial objective, and a classification constraint. The learned speech representations are evaluated using two tasks, i.e., speech-image cross-modal retrieval and speech-to-image generation. On the retrieval task, FSEN outperforms other state-of-the-art methods on both a scene image dataset and two fine-grained datasets. The image generation task shows that the learned speech representations can be used to generate high-quality and semantic-consistent fine-grained images. Learning fine-grained semantics from spoken language via visual grounding is thus possible. Jihua Zhu, Odette Scharenborg

Synthesizing Spoken Descriptions of ImagesabstractImage captioning technology has great potential in many scenarios. However, current text-based image captioning methods cannot be applied to approximately half of the world's languages due to these languages lack of a written form. To solve this problem, recently the image-to-speech task was proposed, which generates spoken descriptions of images bypassing any text via an intermediate representation consisting of phonemes (image-to-phoneme). Here, we present a comprehensive study on the image-to-speech task in which, 1) several representative image-to-text generation methods are implemented for the image-to-phoneme task, 2) objective metrics are sought to evaluate the image-to-phoneme task, and 3) an end-to-end image-to-speech model that is able to synthesize spoken descriptions of images bypassing both text and phonemes is proposed. Extensive experiments are conducted on the public benchmark database Flickr8k. Results of our experiments demonstrate that 1) State-of-the-art image-to-text models can perform well on the image-to-phoneme task, and 2) several evaluation metrics, including BLEU3, BLEU4, BLEU5, and ROUGE-L can be used to evaluate image-to-phoneme performance. | 2021 | Generating Images From Spoken DescriptionsabstractText-based technologies, such as text translation from one language to another, and image captioning, are gaining popularity. However, approximately half of the world's languages are estimated to be lacking a commonly used written form. Consequently, these languages cannot benefit from text-based technologies. This paper presents 1) a new speech technology task, i.e., a speech-to-image generation (S2IG) framework which translates speech descriptions to photo-realistic images 2) without using any text information, thus allowing unwritten languages to potentially benefit from this technology. The proposed speech-to-image framework, referred to as S2IGAN, consists of a speech embedding network and a relation-supervised densely-stacked generative model. The speech embedding network learns speech embeddings with the supervision of corresponding visual information from images. The relation-supervised densely-stacked generative model synthesizes images, conditioned on the speech embeddings produced by the speech embedding network, that are semantically consistent with the corresponding spoken descriptions. Extensive experiments are conducted on four public benchmark databases: two databases that are commonly used in text-to-image generation tasks, i.e., CUB-200 and Oxford-102 for which we created synthesized speech descriptions, and two databases with natural speech descriptions which are often used in the field of cross-modal learning of speech and images, i.e., Flickr8k and Places. Results on these databases demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed S2IGAN on synthesizing high-quality and semantically-consistent images from the speech signal, yielding a good performance and a solid baseline for the S2IG task. | 2021 | Merging Grid Maps in Diverse Resolutions by the Context-based DescriptorabstractBuilding an accurate map is essential for autonomous robot navigation in the environment without GPS. Compared with single-robot, the multiple-robot system has much better performance in terms of accuracy, efficiency and robustness for the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). As a critical component of multiple-robot SLAM, the problem of map merging still remains a challenge. To this end, this article casts it into point set registration problem and proposes an effective map merging method based on the context-based descriptors and correspondence expansion. It first extracts interest points from grid maps by the Harris corner detector. By exploiting neighborhood information of interest points, it automatically calculates the maximum response radius as scale information to compute the context-based descriptor, which includes eigenvalues and normals computed from local structures of each interest point. Then, it effectively establishes origin matches with low precision by applying the nearest neighbor search on the context-based descriptor. Further, it designs a scale-based corresponding expansion strategy to expand each origin match into a set of feature matches, where one similarity transformation between two grid maps can be estimated by the Random Sample Consensus algorithm. Subsequently, a measure function formulated from the trimmed mean square error is utilized to confirm the best similarity transformation and accomplish the coarse map merging. Finally, it utilizes the scaling trimmed iterative closest point algorithm to refine initial similarity transformation so as to achieve accurate merging. As the proposed method considers scale information in the context-based descriptor, it is able to merge grid maps in diverse resolutions. | 2021 | Multitask TSK Fuzzy System Modeling by Jointly Reducing Rules and Consequent ParametersabstractExisting multitask Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy modeling methods always produce high complex fuzzy models with numerous redundant rules and consequent parameters. To this end, we propose a novel multitask TSK fuzzy modeling method called mtSparseTSK, which learns a compact set of fuzzy rules and shared consequent parameters across tasks in a unified procedure. Specifically, we consider the fuzzy rule reduction and consequent parameter selection across tasks by devising novel group sparsity regularizations in the learning criterion of the model. We also integrate the intertask relations in the proposed TSK model for multitask learning. We fully utilize the block structure in the TSK fuzzy models in formulating a joint block sparse optimization problem and develop a procedure for alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMMs) to find the optimal solution of the problem. | 2020 | Semantic Gated Network for Efficient News RepresentationabstractLearning an efficient news representation is a fundamental yet important problem for many tasks. Most existing news-relevant methods only take the textual information while abandoning the visual clues from the illustrations. We argue that the textual title and tags together with the visual illustrations form the main force of a piece of news and are more efficient to express the news content. In this paper, we develop a novel framework, namely Semantic Gated Network (SGN), to integrate the news title, tags and visual illustrations to obtain an efficient joint textual-visual feature for the news, by which we can directly measure the relevance between two pieces of news. Particularly, we first harvest the tag embeddings by the proposed self-supervised classification model. Besides, news title is fed into a sentence encoder pretrained by two semantically relevant news to learn efficient contextualized word vectors. Then the feature of the news title is extracted based on the learned vectors and we combine it with features of tags to obtain textual feature. Finally, we design a novel mechanism named semantic gate to adaptively fuse the textual feature and the image feature. | 2020 | Spatial-Content Image Search in Complex ScenesabstractAlthough the topic of image search has been heavily studied in the last two decades, many works have focused on either instance-level retrieval or semantic-level retrieval. In this work, we develop a novel visually similar spatial-semantic method, namely spatial-content image search, to search images that not only share the same spatial-semantics but also enjoy visual consistency as the query image in complex scenes. We achieve the goal by capturing spatial-semantic concepts as well as the visual representation of each concept contained in an image. Specifically, we first generate a set of bounding boxes and their category labels representing spatial-semantic constraints with YOLOV3, and then obtain visual content of each bounding box with deep features extracted from a convolutional neural network. After that, we customize a similarity computation method that evaluates the relevance between dataset images and input queries according to the developed image representations. Experimental results on two large-scale benchmark retrieval datasets with images consisting of multiple objects demonstrate that our method provides an effective way to query image databases. | 2020 | Self-Weighting and Hypergraph Regularization for Multi-view Spectral ClusteringabstractLeveraging the consensus and complementary principle to find a common representation for different views is an essential problem of multi-view clustering. To address the problem, many Low-Rank Representation (LRR) based methods have been proposed. However, existing LRR based methods have two common limitations: 1) they adopt graph regularization that only considers simple pairwise similarities among data points, and 2) they do not generally characterize the importance of each view. In this letter, we correspondingly utilize hypergraph regularization and a self-weighting strategy to handle the limitations with an LRR based model. Specifically, in our model, we construct hypergraph Laplacian matrices of each view that explicitly contain high order relations among data points, to improve the usage of complementary information. Meanwhile, the self-weighting strategy that preserves view specific information and assigns adaptive weights to each view is leveraged to take full advantage of multi-view consensus information. Based on the Augmented Lagrangian Multiplier (ALM) scheme, we design an effective alternating iterative strategy to optimize the model. | 2020 | Skeleton Filter: A Self-Symmetric Filter for Skeletonization in Noisy Text ImagesabstractRobustly computing the skeletons of objects in natural images is difficult due to the large variations in shape boundaries and the large amount of noise in the images. Inspired by recent findings in neuroscience, we propose the Skeleton Filter, which is a novel model for skeleton extraction from natural images. The Skeleton Filter consists of a pair of oppositely oriented Gabor-like filters; by applying the Skeleton Filter in various orientations to an image at multiple resolutions and fusing the results, our system can robustly extract the skeleton even under highly noisy conditions. We evaluate the performance of our approach using challenging noisy text datasets and demonstrate that our pipeline realizes state-of-the-art performance for extracting the text skeleton. Moreover, the presence of Gabor filters in the human visual system and the simple architecture of the Skeleton Filter can help explain the strong capabilities of humans in perceiving skeletons of objects, even under dramatically noisy conditions. | 2020 | Registration of Multi-View Point Sets Under the Perspective of Expectation-MaximizationabstractMulti-view registration plays a critical role in 3D model reconstruction. To solve this problem, most previous methods align point sets by either partially exploring available information or blindly utilizing unnecessary information, which may lead to undesired results or extra computation complexity. Accordingly, we propose a novel solution for the multi-view registration under the perspective of Expectation-Maximization (EM). The proposed method assumes that each data point is generated from one unique Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), where its corresponding points in other point sets are regarded as Gaussian centroids with equal covariance and membership probabilities. As it is difficult to obtain real corresponding points in the registration problem, they are approximated by the nearest neighbor in each other aligned point sets. Based on this assumption, it is reasonable to define the likelihood function including all rigid transformations, which require to be estimated for multi-view registration. Subsequently, the EM algorithm is derived to estimate rigid transformations with one Gaussian covariance by maximizing the likelihood function. Since the GMM component number is automatically determined by the number of point sets, there is no trade-off between registration accuracy and efficiency in the proposed method. Finally, the proposed method is tested on several benchmark data sets and compared with state-of-the-art algorithms. Experimental results demonstrate its superior performance on the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness for multi-view registration. Jihua Zhu, Zhongyu Li 0002, Shanmin Pang

A Multi-model Ensemble Method Using CNN and Maximum Correntropy Criterion for Basal Cell Carcinoma and Seborrheic Keratoses ClassificationabstractBasal cell carcinoma is very similar to the clinical traits of seborrheic keratosis, which is still a difficult problem in medical image analysis. To accurately classify it, this paper proposes a multi-model ensemble method based on the maximum correntropy criterion (MCC) and convolutional neural network (CNN). First of all, it is well known that the CNN single models like ResNet, Xception, DensNet, etc. have a good effect on the classification, but the accuracy is still limited, so the multi-model ensemble method is presented to improve the accuracy. Secondly, the traditional multi-model ensemble methods, such as voting and linear regression, can improve the accuracy of the model, but it means that the weight computation of each model does not consider the noise, and could not obtain good results. Therefore, we propose the MCC for the model ensemble, which overcomes the noise in the data and effectively improves the classification accuracy. Finally, our proposed multi-model ensemble algorithm based on the MCC achieved an accuracy of 97.07% in the basal cell carcinoma and seborrheic keratosis classification experiments, surpassing the CNN single model and traditional multi-model ensemble method. | 2019 | Multi-view registration based on weighted LRS matrix decomposition of motionsabstractRecently, the low‐rank and sparse (LRS) matrix decomposition has been introduced as an effective mean to solve the multi‐view registration. It views each available relative motion as a block element to reconstruct one sparse matrix, which then is used to approximate the low‐rank matrix, where global motions can be recovered for multi‐view registration. However, this approach is sensitive to the sparsity of the reconstructed matrix and it treats all block elements equally in spite of their varied reliabilities. Therefore, this study proposes an effective approach for multi‐view registration by weighted LRS matrix decomposition. On the basis of the inverse symmetry property of relative motions, it first proposes a completion method to reduce the sparsity of the reconstructed matrix. The reduced sparsity of the reconstructed matrix can improve the robustness and efficiency of LRS matrix decomposition. Then, it proposes the weighted LRS matrix decomposition, where each block element is assigned with one estimated weight to denote its reliability. By introducing the weight, more accurate registration results can be efficiently recovered from the estimated low‐rank matrix. Experimental results tested on public datasets illustrate the superiority of the proposed approach over the state‐of‐the‐art approaches on robustness, accuracy and efficiency. | 2019 | Unifying Sum and Weighted Aggregations for Efficient Yet Effective Image Representation ComputationabstractEmbedding and aggregating a set of local descriptors (e.g. SIFT) into a single vector is normally used to represent images in image search. Standard aggregation operations include sum and weighted aggregations. While showing high efficiency, sum aggregation lacks discriminative power. In contrast, weighted aggregation shows promising retrieval performance but suffers extremely high time cost. In this work, we present a general mixed aggregation method that unifies sum and weighted aggregation methods. Owing to its general formulation, our method is able to balance the trade-off between retrieval quality and image representation efficiency. Additionally, to improve query performance, we propose computing multiple weighting coefficients rather than one for each to be aggregated vector by partitioning them into several components with negligible computational cost. Extensive experimental results on standard public image retrieval benchmarks demonstrate that our aggregation method achieves state-of-the-art performance while showing over ten times speedup over baselines. | 2019 | Deep Feature Aggregation and Image Re-Ranking With Heat Diffusion for Image RetrievalabstractImage retrieval based on deep convolutional features has demonstrated state-of-the-art performance in popular benchmarks. In this paper, we present a unified solution to address deep convolutional feature aggregation and image re-ranking by simulating the dynamics of heat diffusion. A distinctive problem in image retrieval is that repetitive or bursty features tend to dominate final image representations, resulting in representations less distinguishable. We show that by considering each deep feature as a heat source, our unsupervised aggregation method is able to avoid over-representation of bursty features. We additionally provide a practical solution for the proposed aggregation method and further show the efficiency of our method in experimental evaluation. Inspired by the aforementioned deep feature aggregation method, we also propose a method to re-rank a number of top ranked images for a given query image by considering the query as the heat source. Finally, we extensively evaluate the proposed approach with pre-trained and fine-tuned deep networks on common public benchmarks and show superior performance compared to previous work. | 2019 | Improving Object Retrieval Quality by Integration of Similarity Propagation and Query ExpansionabstractRe-ranking is an essential step for accurate image retrieval, due to its well-known power in performance improvement. Although numerous works have been proposed for re-ranking, many of them are only customized for a certain image representation model. In contrast to most existing techniques, we develop generalized re-ranking algorithms that are applicable to different kinds of image encodings in this paper. We first employ a quite successful theory of similarity propagation to reconstruct vectors of a query and its top ranked images and, subsequently, get a re-ranked list by comparing the new image vectors. Furthermore, considering that the just mentioned strategy is directly compatible with query expansion and, thus, in order to leverage advantages of this milestone, we then propose integrating them into a unified framework for maximizing re-ranking benefits. Our re-ranking algorithms are memory and computation efficient, and experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate that they compare favorably with the state of the art. | 2018 | A Novel Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy System Modeling Method with Joint Feature Selection and Rule ReductionabstractTraditional Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system modeling methods always yield a large number of fuzzy rules. Besides, they also include almost all the original features in the final model. These two factors make the final model sophisticated. In this paper, we propose a novel T-S fuzzy system modeling method called GS-FIS (Group Sparse Fuzzy Inference Systems), which performs fuzzy rule reduction and feature selection simultaneously in a unified framework. Considering the group structure information in the T-S fuzzy system and common features among fuzzy rules, we cast the fuzzy system modeling into a joint group sparse optimization problem and further develop an alternating direction method of multipliers procedure to derive the optimum solution to the problem. Experimental results on the synthetic dataset and several real-world datasets show that the proposed method can not only obtain a satisfactory generalization performance but also reduce the number of fuzzy rules and features effectively. | 2018 | Adaptive Co-Weighting Deep Convolutional Features for Object RetrievalabstractAggregating deep convolutional features into a global image vector has attracted sustained attention in image retrieval. In this paper, we propose an efficient unsupervised aggregation method that uses an adaptive Gaussian filter and an element-value sensitive vector to co-weight deep features. Specifically, the Gaussian filter assigns large weights to features of region-of-interests (RoI) by adaptively determining the RoI's center, while the element-value sensitive channel vector suppresses burstiness phenomenon by assigning small weights to feature maps with large sum values of all locations. Experimental results on benchmark datasets validate the proposed two weighting schemes both effectively improve the discrimination power of image vectors. Furthermore, with the same experimental setting, our method outperforms other very recent aggregation approaches by a considerable margin. | 2017 | FPFH-based graph matching for 3D point cloud registrationabstractCorrespondence detection is a vital step in point cloud registration and it can help getting a reliable initial alignment. In this paper, we put forward an advanced point feature-based graph matching algorithm to solve the initial alignment problem of rigid 3D point cloud registration with partial overlap. Specifically, Fast Point Feature Histograms are used to determine the initial possible correspondences firstly. Next, a new objective function is provided to make the graph matching more suitable for partially overlapping point cloud. The objective function is optimized by the simulated annealing algorithm for final group of correct correspondences. Finally, we present a novel set partitioning method which can transform the NP-hard optimization problem into a O(n3)-solvable one. Experiments on the Stanford and UWA public data sets indicates that our method can obtain better result in terms of both accuracy and time cost compared with other point cloud registration methods. | 2016 | Registration of Point Clouds Based on the Ratio of Bidirectional DistancesabstractDespite the fact that original Iterative Closest Point(ICP) algorithm has been widely used for registration, itcannot tackle the problem when two point clouds are par-tially overlapping. Accordingly, this paper proposes a ro-bust approach for the registration of partially overlappingpoint clouds. Given two initially posed clouds, it firstlybuilds up bilateral correspondence and computes bidirec-tional distances for each point in the data shape. Based onthe ratio of bidirectional distances, the exponential functionis selected and utilized to calculate the probability value, which can indicate whether the point pair belongs to theoverlapping part or not. Subsequently, the probability val-ue can be embedded into the least square function for reg-istration of partially overlapping point clouds and a novelvariant of ICP algorithm is presented to obtain the optimalrigid transformation. The proposed approach can achievegood registration of point clouds, even when their overlappercentage is low. | 2015 | Efficient Sampling-Based Motion Planning for On-Road Autonomous DrivingabstractThis paper introduces an efficient motion planning method for on-road driving of the autonomous vehicles, which is based on the rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) algorithm. RRT is an incremental sampling-based algorithm and is widely used to solve the planning problem of mobile robots. However, due to the meandering path, the inaccurate terminal state, and the slow exploration, it is often inefficient in many applications such as autonomous vehicles. To address these issues and considering the realistic context of on-road autonomous driving, we propose a fast RRT algorithm that introduces a rule-template set based on the traffic scenes and an aggressive extension strategy of search tree. Both improvements lead to a faster and more accurate RRT toward the goal state compared with the basic RRT algorithm. Meanwhile, a model-based prediction postprocess approach is adopted, by which the generated trajectory can be further smoothed and a feasible control sequence for the vehicle would be obtained. Furthermore, in the environments with dynamic obstacles, an integrated approach of the fast RRT algorithm and the configuration-time space can be used to improve the quality of the planned trajectory and the replanning. A large number of experimental results illustrate that our method is fast and efficient in solving planning queries of on-road autonomous driving and demonstrate its superior performances over previous approaches. | 2014 | Improved Techniques for Multi-view Registration with Motion AveragingabstractRecently, motion averaging has been introduced as an effective means to solve multi-view registration problem. This approach utilizes the Lie-algebras to implement the averaging of many relative motions, each of which corresponds to the registration result of the scan pair involved in multi-view registration. Accordingly, a key question is how to obtain accurate registration between two partially overlapping scans. This paper presents a method to estimate the overlapping percentage between each scan pair involved in multi-view registration. What's more, it applies the trimmed iterative closest point (TrICP) algorithm to obtain accurate relative motions for the scan pairs including high overlapping percentage. Besides, it introduces the parallel computation to increase the efficiency of multi-view registration. | 2014 | Robust registration of partially overlapping point sets via genetic algorithm with growth operatorabstractRecently, genetic algorithm (GA) has been introduced as an effective method to solve the registration problem. It maintains a population of candidate solutions for the problem and evolves by iteratively applying a set of stochastic operators. Accordingly, a key question is how to reduce the population size. In this study, the authors present two techniques for reducing the population size in the GA for registration of partially overlapping point sets. Based on the trimmed iterative closest point algorithm, they introduce a growth operator into the GA. The growth operator, which is also inspired by the biological evolution, can improve the GA efficiency for registration. Furthermore, they present a technique called centre alignment to confirm the value range of all the registration parameters, which can reduce the search space and allow the well‐designed GA to directly solve the registration problem. Experimental results carried out with the m ‐dimensional point sets illustrate its advantages over previous approaches. Jihua Zhu, Deyu Meng, Zhongyu Li 0002, Shaoyi Du, Zejian Yuan

Fast and robust isotropic scaling iterative closest point algorithmabstractThe iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm is an accurate approach for the registration between two point sets on the same scale. However, it can not handle the case with different scales. This paper proposes a fast and robust ICP algorithm for isotropic scaling point sets registration (FRISICP). In order to accurately and directly estimate the scale factor without any constraints, we introduce a bidirection distance measurement method into the least square (LS) problem. Then to keep computational efficiency when the number of points in the set increasing, we further introduce a sparse-to-dense hierarchical model in ICP algorithm to speed up the isotropic scaling point set matching process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed FRISICP method outperforms other algorithms on both 2D and 3D point sets. Ce Li 0001, Jianru Xue, Nanning Zheng 0001, Shaoyi Du, Jihua Zhu
