1996 A Noice Whitening approach to Multiple-Access Noise Rejection - Part II: Implementation Issues
abstract
Several practical methods are proposed for the implementation of linear filters that reject multiple-access noise in direct sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) receivers. These methods rely on taking advantage of variations in the received chip spectrum, and do not require locking and despreading multiple signals. The resulting structures are simple, and some can operate at a high chip rate. Adaptive structures are also proposed. It is shown that a close relationship exists between noise whitening and chip-equalization for a DS-CDMA receiver. System issues affecting the choice of the chip spectrum, and thus the applicability of these methods, are described.

1995 Open-Loop Power Control Error in a Land Mobile Satellite System
abstract
In order to combat large scale shadowing and distance losses in a land mobile satellite system, an adaptive power control (APC) scheme is essential. Such a scheme, implemented on the uplink ensures that all users' signals arrive at the base station with equal average power as they move within the satellite spot beam-an important requirement in a CDMA system. Because of the lengthy round-trip delay on a satellite link, closed-loop power control systems are only of marginal benefit. Therefore, an open-loop APC scheme is proposed to counteract the effects of shadowing and distance loss. A fairly general channel model, consisting of log-normal shadowing and Rician fading, is assumed. This can be applied to a specific two-state land mobile satellite channel model, involving shadowed intervals with Rayleigh fading and unshadowed intervals with Rician fading. It is found that the power control error can be approximated by a log-normally distributed random variable. To quantify the performance of the APC, the standard deviation of the power control error in decibels is analyzed as a function of the specular power-to-scatter power ratio, the measurement time and the vehicle velocity. To illustrate the usefulness of the results, we analyze the effect of the power control error on the system capacity of a CDMA mobile satellite link.>

1994 A noise-whitening approach to multiple access noise rejection .I. Theory and background
abstract
Minimum probability of bit error is difficult to achieve in a DS-CDMA receiver. Since multiple-access noise is the sum of many independent random processes, it is reasonable to approximate it by a Gaussian process of the same power spectral density. This leads to the criterion of maximizing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, receivers that maximize SNR in a particular DS-CDMA system model under various constraints are proposed and analyzed. The method proposed here does not require locking and despreading multiple arriving CDMA signals. The maximization of SNR is compared with the minimization of probability of error, when the receiver is constrained to operate bit-by-bit, in the absence of knowledge of the other users' spreading codes, timing, and phase.>
