| 2026 | DIGEST: Dynamic Graph Refinement with Dual Contrastive Semantic Transfer for Multimodal RecommendationabstractMultimodal recommendation benefits from leveraging rich content signals such as images and texts to alleviate interaction sparsity, yet existing graph-based approaches are still hindered by (i) noisy user—item edges that are treated as static during training and (ii) inconsistent representation spaces across interaction-driven and modality-induced graph views. To address these issues, we propose DIGEST, a multi-graph framework that propagates trainable ID embeddings on a denoised user—item graph and a fused modality-induced item—item graph, and interleaves message passing with dynamic graph refinement that iteratively reweights existing edges to suppress noisy connections. To enable reliable semantic transfer across views, DIGEST further introduces a dual contrastive alignment that (i) aligns the collaborative and semantic item views and (ii) constrains the semantic graph representations to projected multimodal features, together with a lightweight dimension decorrelation regularizer and adaptive gated fusion to reduce redundancy and stabilize multi-view learning. Extensive experiments on three Amazon benchmark datasets demonstrate that DIGEST consistently outperforms state-of-the-art multimodal recommenders, achieving up to 8.43% relative improvement on NDCG@20 and 7.66% on Recall@20 over the strongest baselines. | 2026 | NicheDeSig: niche-aware deconvolution and adaptive signature analysis for spatial transcriptomicsabstractMOTIVATION: For spot-based spatial transcriptomics (ST), accurate cell-type deconvolution is essential for downstream analysis since each spot captures mixtures of multiple cell types. Meanwhile, spatial niches define distinct micro-environmental contexts, also salient for biological interpretation. However, existing deconvolution methods usually rely on fixed reference signatures or mapping single cells onto ST spots, without incorporating niche priors or modeling niche-dependent shifts. Consequently, existing methods remain focused on spot-level proportion estimation, with limited ability to support functional analysis of niche-associated molecular programs. RESULTS: We present NicheDeSig for niche-aware deconvolution. NicheDeSig models each cell type through adaptive signatures, enabling spot deconvolution under context-dependent signatures and supporting niche-aware analysis of cell-state variation across spatial micro-environments. Our method achieves strong deconvolution performance across the simulated benchmark datasets and improves spatial fidelity in the simulated colon dataset. The learned signatures recover laminar and white-matter-associated programs in the human dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), domain-stratified tumor microenvironment patterns in breast cancer (BRCA), and region-associated signatures in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma sample A (PDAC-A) and colorectal liver metastasis analyses. | 2026 | Deep Underwater Image Quality Assessment via Progressive Physics-Aware Multi-Prior CollaborationabstractUnderwater image quality assessment (UIQA) is a critical research area, challenged by underwater environments such as wavelength-dependent light attenuation, scattering, and non-uniform illumination. Existing deep learning-based UIQA methods often address these degradations in isolation, neglecting their complex interplay with human perception and lacking explicit modeling of underwater optical phenomena. To address this, we propose PhysIQ-Net, a novel framework that integrates physics-driven principles with progressive multi-prior interaction modeling through three key innovations: First, introduce dual physics-based decomposition that separates images into Backscatter, Transmission, Reflectance, and Illuminance components to capture distinct degradation mechanisms; Second, propose prior-guided dynamic filtering that adapts convolutional kernels to image-specific content using physical priors; and Third, propose physic-informed Cross-Domain Feature Interaction that enables bidirectional collaboration between color-aware and structure-aware representations to model their perceptual inter-dependencies. Extensive experiments across multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate that PhysIQ-Net significantly outperforms existing methods, with ablation studies validating each component’s contribution, providing a robust solution for UIQA. | 2025 | Zero-Shot Low-Light Image Enhancement via Latent Diffusion ModelsabstractLow-light image enhancement (LLIE) aims to improve visibility and signal-to-noise ratio in images captured under poor lighting conditions. While deep learning has shown promise in this domain, current approaches require extensive paired training data, limiting their practical utility. We present a novel framework that reformulates low-light image enhancement as a zero-shot inference problem using pre-trained latent diffusion models (LDMs), eliminating the need for task-specific training data. Our key insight is that the rich natural image priors encoded in LDMs can be leveraged to recover well-lit images through a carefully designed optimization process. To address the ill-posed nature of low-light degradation and the complexity of latent space optimization, our framework introduces an exposure-aware degradation module that adaptively models illumination variations and a principled latent regularization scheme with adaptive guidance that ensures both enhancement quality and natural image statistics. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework outperforms existing zero-shot methods across diverse real-world scenarios. | 2025 | Self-Correcting Robot Manipulation via Gaussian-Splatted ForesightabstractLanguage-conditioned robotic manipulation in unstructured environments presents significant challenges for intelligent robotic systems. However, due to partial observation or imprecise action prediction, failure may be unavoidable for learned policies. Moreover, operational failures can lead to the robotic arm entering an untrained state, potentially causing destructive results. Consequently, the ability to detect and self-correct failures is crucial for the development of practical robotic systems. To address this challenge, we propose a foresight-driven failure detection and self-correction module for robot manipulation. By leveraging 3D Gaussian Splatting, we represent the current scene with multiple Gaussians. Subsequently, we train a prediction network to forecast the Gaussian representation of future scenes conditioned on planned actions. Failure is detected when the predicted future significantly deviates from the real observation after action execution. In such cases, the end-effector rolls back to the previous action to avoid an untrained state. Integrating this approach with the PerACT framework, we develop a self-correcting robot manipulation policy. Evaluations on ten RLBench tasks with 166 variations demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method, which outperforms state-of-the-art methods by 12.0% success rate on average. | 2025 | RetouchGPT: LLM-based Interactive High-Fidelity Face Retouching via Imperfection PromptingabstractFace retouching aims to remove facial imperfections from image and videos while at the same time preserving face attributes. The existing methods are designed to perform non-interactive end-to-end retouching, while the ability to interact with users is highly demanded in downstream applications. In this paper, we propose RetouchGPT, a novel framework that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to guide the interactive retouching process. Towards this end, we design an instruction-driven imperfection prediction module to accurately identify imperfections by integrating textual and visual features. To learn imperfection prompts, we further incorporate a LLM-based embedding module to fuse multi-modal conditioning information. The prompt-based feature modification is performed in each transformer block, such that the imperfection features are suppressed and replaced with the features of normal skin progressively. Extensive experiments have been performed to verify effectiveness of our design elements and demonstrate that RetouchGPT is a useful tool for interactive face retouching and achieves superior performance over state-of-the-arts. | 2025 | LogiGraph: Logical Reasoning with Contrastive Learning and Lightweight Graph NetworksabstractLogical reasoning is a crucial factor in machine reading comprehension tasks (MRC). Existing methods suffer from the balance between semantic and explicit logical relation representations, in which some emphasize contextual semantics, while others pay more attention to explicit logical features. Additionally, previous methods utilize graph convolutional networks (GCN) for node updates, still exhibiting some shortcomings. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a logical reasoning method with contrastive learning and lightweight graph networks (LogiGraph). Our method focuses on the lightweight aspect of the GCN, which greatly improves the shortcomings of the GCN, and employs conjunction and punctuation marks as two types of edges to construct a dual graph. Besides, we combine contrastive learning with graph reasoning, which changes the logical expression’s content as the negative sample of the original context, enabling the model to capture negative logical relationships and improving generalization ability. We conduct extensive experiments on two public datasets, ReClor and LogiQA. Experimental results demonstrate that LogiGraph can achieve state-of-the-art performance on both datasets. | 2025 | IP-KGQA: Intent-Aware Prompt Learning for Knowledge Graph Question AnsweringabstractKnowledge Graph Question Answering (KGQA) addresses natural language questions by leveraging structured information stored in knowledge graphs. However, existing KGQA methods are overly concerned with improving the quality of responses by retrieving information, neglecting to identify which type of knowledge is truly useful to optimize the performance of the KGQA system, resulting in redundant retrieval. At the same time, these methods have limitations in aligning user intent and insufficient semantic richness in responses. In this work, we propose IP-KGQA, which introduce a intent-aware prompt learning scheme for KGQA framework. A Selection-Driven Efficient Retrieval (SER) module is incorporated in the framework, which classifies user questions to ensure that only long-tail questions are directed to the knowledge graph retrieval to enhance system efficiency. To filter and select the most relevant triplets, aligning retrieved information more closely with user intent, we introduce the User Intent-aware Filtering (UIF) module, where Monte Carlo sampling is applied to obtain the optimal triplets. The Domain-specific Context Prompt Extension (DCPE) module is utilized in collaboration with a fine-tuned large language model (LLM) to integrate domain-specific knowledge into the responses, ensuring that the answers are enriched in terms of semantic quality. Extensive experiments have been conducted on the CommonSenseQA and TriviaQA datasets, which demonstrate that IP-KGQA outperforms the existing methods in terms of retrieval efficiency, answer accuracy and user intent alignment. | 2025 | InpaintFormer: Prompt-guided High-Quality Face Inpainting with Mask-Aware Self-AttentionabstractFace image inpainting, especially with user-controllable customization, aims to restore degraded facial regions while adhering to user-provided instructions. Traditional inpainting methods often focus solely on restoring visual fidelity, lacking the ability to incorporate user prompts or semantic guidance. In this work, we present InpaintFormer, a novel framework for user-controlled face image inpainting guided by textual prompts. Specifically, we propose a Prompt-guided Feature Modulation (PGFM) module to align visual features with user instructions by utilizing a pre-trained CLIP model to extract text and image embeddings. These embeddings are fused to modulate the encoded image features, ensuring semantic consistency with the prompt. Additionally, a Degradation Mask Predictor (DMP) is introduced to identify degraded regions requiring inpainting, while a Mask-Aware Self-Attention (MASA) mechanism within the Transformer refines the inpainting process by selectively attending to non-degraded regions for generating realistic results. By combining PGFM, DMP, and MASA, InpaintFormer enables controllable face image inpainting with high fidelity and semantic alignment. Extensive experiments demonstrate that InpaintFormer outperforms state-of-the-art inpainting methods in terms of controllability and naturalness. | 2025 | Rethinking 3D Robotic Perception: Elastic Voxel Representation with Splatting DistillationabstractLanguage-guided robotic manipulation is advancing rapidly with Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, yet faces fundamental challenges in 3D perception. This paper addresses two critical challenges: the scale elasticity requirement for simultaneously processing coarse environmental context and fine manipulation details, and the scarcity of action-annotated training data. We present Splat-Actor, a novel robotic manipulation framework that introduces two key innovations. First, we develop an elastic voxel encoder that combines multi-scale processing with selective tokenization, enabling efficient 3D spatial reasoning while adaptively focusing on informative regions. Second, we propose a depth-constrained feature distillation framework that leverages Gaussian Splatting to bridge 2D and 3D representations, transferring rich semantic features from pre-trained vision models to enhance 3D understanding. Extensive experiments across 10 manipulation tasks with 166 variations demonstrate that Splat-Actor achieves a 6.8% improvement over state-of-the-art methods while maintaining the computational efficiency. | 2025 | Text to Trajectory: Enhancing and Evaluating LLMs for Embodied Task PlanningabstractThe increasing demand for effective human-machine interaction highlights the importance of integrating natural language processing with robotics technology. This paper addresses the challenges of using Large Language Models (LLMs) for embodied task planning in complex environments. We propose a comprehensive framework that combines environmental-aware LLM fine-tuning with a novel Stepwise Beam Search (SBS) strategy. In conjunction with the environmentally enhanced LLM, the SBS strategy facilitates comprehensive exploration of both token-level and step-level search spaces, overcoming the limitations of conventional greedy search methods. Additionally, to evaluate the effectiveness of embodied task planning, we introduce the Trajectory Match Score (TMS), a robust evaluation metric that leverages state-based simulation to assess plan success. Through extensive experiments on standard benchmarks, our framework demonstrates substantial improvements in both plan generation quality and task success rates, advancing the state-of-the-art in embodied task planning. | 2025 | SemanticLoom: Category-aware Dynamic Fusion for Multi-class Few-shot Image SynthesisabstractFew-shot text-to-image (T2I) generation seeks to efficiently integrate new semantics into existing pre-trained models while preserving their capacity to generate diverse, high-quality images. However, existing methods often suffer from inefficiency and poor scalability due to the need for separate training processes for each new concept. These challenges hinder their practical application in multi-class few-shot scenarios. To overcome these issues, we propose SemanticLoom that dynamically incorporates novel concepts into pre-trained diffusion models through category-aware dynamic feature fusion. Our approach introduces a lightweight semantic expander that captures fine-grained semantics, guided by learnable identifier to ensure precise semantic integration. By dynamically adjusting feature fusion coefficients based on category diversity and training progress, our method harmonizes the integration of new semantic features with the original model’s capabilities, ensuring consistency and generalization. Experiments demonstrate that our method successfully integrates new semantics without compromising the generative diversity and versatility of the pre-trained model. | 2025 | Adaptive Illumination Transfer Network for Shadow RemovalabstractShadow removal aims to harmonize illumination between shadow and non-shadow regions. However, existing methods often struggle to achieve this goal due to inadequate modeling of illumination relationships between these two regions. Moreover, the prevalent reliance on binary shadow masks hinders their capability to address non-uniform shadows. To address these limitations, we propose an adaptive illumination transfer network (AITNet), which incorporates two complementary shadow enhancement strategies. First, a global illumination transfer strategy is designed to model the illumination relationship between shadow and non-shadow regions, enabling the holistic enhancement of shadow regions. Second, an illumination-adaptive strategy is developed to estimate an illumination degradation map, which guides the adaptive enhancement of shadow regions. Furthermore, to preserve the original structural details, the enhancement process is applied exclusively to the illumination map obtained after Retinex decomposition. Extensive experiments have demonstrated the superiority of our method over existing approaches on public datasets. Si Wu 0002, Yong Xu 0007, Yan Huang 0031, Patrick Le Callet |

| 2025 | SmellDetector: Multi-Label Code Smell Detection and Refactoring with Large Language ModelsabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive capabilities in many tasks such as code generation and automated program repair. However, code LLMs have ignored another important task in programmers’ daily development work, which is to improve the maintainability, readability, and scalability of the program. All of these characteristics are related to code smells and we study how to improve them by detecting and removing code smells. Most works on code smells still rely on using measures formulated by experts as features, but lack of use of the rich prior knowledge contained in code LLMs. In this paper, we propose SmellDetector, a comprehensive model for both code smell detection and refactoring opportunities detection in Java. We train the model with the designed prompt which contains both code smells of class-level and method-level in the same code snippet, including more than 20 types. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on the code smell detection task and change the basic paradigm of code smell detection from binary classification problem to multi-label classification. Finally, it has been verified through experiments that good code smell detection helps to detect refactoring opportunities. | 2025 | Repository-Level Code Smell Detection Based on Multi-Scale Code Information and LLM AssistanceabstractIn software engineering, code smell detection has always been an important research task because it affects the readability and maintainability of programs. Traditional code smell detection work mostly focuses on a single file, and the study of repo-level code smell caused by the interaction of multiple files is still relatively lacking, although it is more practical in reality. Although large language models (LLMs) have recently achieved remarkable success in the field of code generation, simply copying the fine-tuning method based on LLM is not good enough in this task because it is difficult to model the logical relationship between multiple files. In this paper, we propose a repo-level code smell detection model(RSD), which divides the levels according to the distance between the rest class and the problem class, uses cross attention and CNN to model global and local information, and uses LLM to generate teacher vectors in the same scenario for assistance. Finally, the detection performance surpasses the fine-tuning baseline method based on multiple code LLMs and has achieved the state-of-the-art. Finally, we also contribute the BenchMark used in this article to help researchers in the repo-level smell detection task. | 2025 | Ground and Reconstruct: Entity-Region Bidirectional Alignment Pre-Training for Low-Resource GMNERabstractGrounded Multimodal Named Entity Recognition (GMNER) extends Multimodal Named Entity Recognition (MNER) by identifying named entities, their types, and corresponding image regions. Fine-grained MNER and Grounding (FMNERG) further refines entity categorization. However, existing methods struggle with scarce annotated data, particularly in low-resource scenarios, and often fail to generalize to unseen entities. While vision-language pre-training (VLP) leverages unlabeled image-caption pairs, it primarily learns generic visual-linguistic representations, overlooking fine-grained entity-region alignment crucial for entity-related tasks. To address these challenges, we propose a unified VLP framework for GMNER and FMNERG, introducing two task-specific pre-training objectives: Entity-to-Region Alignment (ETRA) for entity grounding and Region-to-Entity Alignment (RTEA) for entity reconstruction. These tasks jointly optimize fine-grained entity-region alignment. To compensate for the lack of fine-grained multimodal pre-training data, we develop an automatic labeling method that distills entity-oriented knowledge from large-scale unlabeled image-text pairs, enhancing generalization to unseen entities. Extensive experiments on GMNER and FMNERG benchmarks demonstrate that our framework outperforms existing low-resource learning approaches and achieves competitive performance in full-supervision, underscoring its effectiveness across diverse data conditions. | 2025 | Prior-Free Augmentation for Cloth-Changing Person Re-IdentificationabstractCloth-changing Person Re-Identification (CCReID) aims to recognize individuals across clothing variations by learning clothing-invariant representations. However, obtaining sufficient samples of the same person in diverse outfits is often impractical. While synthesizing realistic person images provides an effective solution, existing augmentation methods require labeled data and external priors (e.g., pose skeletons, semantic maps), resulting in high costs and limited generalization. To this end, we propose a Prior-Free Augmentation method for Cloth-changing person re-identification (PFAC), which leverages text guidance to synthesize images with clothing variations while maintaining identity consistency. Our approach features: (1) a truncated diffusion model that preserves clothing-invariant structural cues from intermediate noisy images, (2) a dual-branch denoising network that decouples text-guided clothing synthesis from identity consistency via cross-modal alignment, and (3) a joint optimization strategy with identity-focused losses and image filtering to enhance realism and discriminability. Experimental results on PRCC, LTCC, and Celeb-reID datasets demonstrate that PFAC achieves state-of-the-art CCReID performance, effectively generating high-fidelity, identity-consistent images for robust augmentation without external priors. | 2025 | LoRATv2: Enabling Low-Cost Temporal Modeling in One-Stream TrackersabstractTransformer-based algorithms, such as LoRAT, have significantly enhanced object-tracking performance. However, these approaches rely on a standard attention mechanism, which incurs quadratic token complexity, making real-time inference computationally expensive. In this paper, we introduce LoRATv2, a novel tracking framework that addresses these limitations with three main contributions.
First, LoRATv2 integrates frame-wise causal attention, which ensures full self-attention within each frame while enabling causal dependencies across frames, significantly reducing computational overhead. Moreover, key-value (KV) caching is employed to efficiently reuse past embeddings for further speedup.
Second, building on LoRAT's parameter-efficient fine-tuning, we propose Stream-Specific LoRA Adapters (SSLA). As frame-wise causal attention introduces asymmetry in how streams access temporal information, SSLA assigns dedicated LoRA modules to the template and each search stream, with the main ViT backbone remaining frozen. This allows specialized adaptation for each stream's role in temporal tracking.
Third, we introduce a two-phase progressive training strategy, which first trains a single-search-frame tracker and then gradually extends it to multi-search-frame inputs by introducing additional LoRA modules. This curriculum-based learning paradigm improves long-term tracking while maintaining training efficiency.
In extensive experiments on multiple benchmarks, LoRATv2 achieves state-of-the-art performance, substantially improved efficiency, and a superior performance-to-FLOPs ratio over state-of-the-art trackers.

| 2025 | Collaborative Diffusion Models for RecommendationabstractRecently, recommendation models based on collaborative filtering have increasingly leveraged not only primary user-item interactions but also auxiliary information such as implicit relational structures (e.g., user-user or item-item graphs) and multimodal content (e.g., images and textual descriptions) to enhance recommendation performance. A key challenge in this context lies in effectively integrating auxiliary features derived from semantic structures or modality representations into user-item modeling, in a way that enhance performance without incurring detrimental effects. Furthermore, since these features often originate from heterogeneous semantic or modal spaces, they may include redundant or task-irrelevant information that can hinder the learning process. To address these issues, we propose the Collaborative Diffusion Models for Recommendation (CoDMR). CoDMR employs diffusion models in latent feature spaces to filter out task-irrelevant noise embedded in auxiliary features. It introduces task-relevant collaborative signals as conditional guidance during the denoising process, facilitating the generation of auxiliary representations aligned with the recommendation task. These refined features are then incorporated into user-item interaction modeling, resulting in enhanced representations for both users and items. Extensive experiments on three public datasets consistently demonstrate that our CoDMR method outperforms various competitive baselines. | 2025 | MixRec: Heterogeneous Graph Collaborative FilteringabstractFor modern recommender systems, the use of low-dimensional latent representations to embed users and items based on their observed interactions has become commonplace. However, many existing recommendation models are primarily designed for coarse-grained and homogeneous interactions, which limits their effectiveness in two critical dimensions. Firstly, these models fail to leverage the relational dependencies that exist across different types of user behaviors, such as page views, collects, comments, and purchases. Secondly, they struggle to capture the fine-grained latent factors that drive user interaction patterns. To address these limitations, we present a heterogeneous graph collaborative filtering model MixRec that excels at disentangling users' multi-behavior interaction patterns and uncovering the latent intent factors behind each behavior. Our model achieves this by incorporating intent disentanglement and multi-behavior modeling, facilitated by a parameterized heterogeneous hypergraph architecture. Furthermore, we introduce a novel contrastive learning paradigm that adaptively explores the advantages of self-supervised data augmentation, thereby enhancing the model's resilience against data sparsity and expressiveness with relation heterogeneity. To validate the efficacy of MixRec, we conducted extensive experiments on three public datasets. The results clearly demonstrate its superior performance, significantly outperforming various state-of-the-art baselines. Our model is open-sourced and available at: https://github.com/HKUDS/MixRec. | 2025 | Detail-Preserving Diffusion Models for Low-Light Image EnhancementabstractExisting diffusion models for low-light image enhancement typically incrementally remove noise introduced during the forward diffusion process using a denoising loss, with the process being conditioned on input low-light images. While these models demonstrate remarkable abilities in generating realistic high-frequency details, they often struggle to restore fine details that are faithful to the input. To address this, we present a novel detail-preserving diffusion model for realistic and faithful low-light image enhancement. Our approach integrates a size-agnostic diffusion process with a reverse process reconstruction loss, significantly enhancing the fidelity of enhanced images to their low-light counterparts and enabling more accurate recovery of fine details. To ensure the preservation of region- and content-aware details, we employ an efficient noise estimation network with a simplified channel-spatial attention mechanism. Additionally, we propose a multiscale ensemble scheme to maintain detail fidelity across diverse illumination regions. Comprehensive experiments on eight benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art results compared to over twenty existing methods in terms of both perceptual quality (LPIPS) and distortion metrics (PSNR and SSIM). | 2025 | Deep Code Search with Naming-Agnostic Contrastive Multi-View LearningabstractSoftware development is a repetitive task, as developers usually reuse or get inspiration from existing implementations. Code search, which refers to the retrieval of relevant code snippets from a codebase according to the developer’s intent that has been expressed as a query, has become increasingly important in the software development process. Due to the success of deep learning in various applications, a great number of deep learning-based code search approaches have sprung up and achieved promising results. However, developers may not follow the same naming conventions and the same variable may have different variable names in different implementations, bringing a challenge to deep learning-based code search methods that rely on explicit variable correspondences to understand source code. To overcome this challenge, we propose a Naming-Agnostic Code Search (NACS) method based on contrastive multi-view code representation learning. NACS strips information bound to variable names from Abstract Syntax Tree (AST), the representation of the abstract syntactic structure of source code, and focuses on capturing intrinsic properties solely from AST structures. We use semantic-level and syntax-level augmentation techniques to prepare realistically rational data and adopt contrastive learning to design a graph-view modeling component in NACS to enhance the understanding of code snippets. We further model ASTs in a path view to strengthen the graph-view modeling component through multi-view learning. Extensive experiments show that NACS provides superior code search performance compared to baselines and NACS can be adapted to help existing code search methods overcome the impact of different naming conventions. | 2025 | Enhancing CNN-Based Blind Image Quality Assessment via Deep Cross-Layer Pattern EncodingabstractEvaluating image quality without reference images, known as blind image quality assessment (BIQA), is crucial for image communication. Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged as a prominent BIQA approach due to their feature learning power. Usually, both high-level semantic information and low-level details significantly impact perceived visual quality. However, most existing CNN-based methods focus on high-level semantic information via aggregating features on top of the last convolutional layer into a global descriptor, neglecting the importance of shallow, low-level cues. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a novel approach that exploits local encoding and histogram-based pyramid pooling on crosslayer features produced by a CNN, achieving a joint local and global analysis. Specifically, we introduce a cross-layer pattern encoding model that characterizes features generated along convolutional layers via a soft histogram of local 3D binary patterns. This leads to a highly informative yet compact descriptor for score regression. By building this module into a ResNet backbone, we present an effective BIQA model demonstrating state-ofthe-art performance in extensive experiments on synthetic and authentic datasets. | 2024 | PU-SDF: Arbitrary-Scale Uniformly Upsampling Point Clouds via Signed Distance FunctionsabstractPoint cloud upsampling is a crucial technique for improving the performance of 3D data understanding, enabling the creation of dense and uniform point clouds from raw and sparse input data. However, most existing methods exhibit limitations in dealing with different scaling factors, either requiring multiple networks or producing unevenly distributed points. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a deep learning method called PU-SDF, which consists of a local-feature-based signed distance function network (LSDF-network) and a 3D-grid query points generation module (GPGM). The proposed LSDF-network can perform point cloud upsampling at arbitrary rates and can be easily adapted to handle unseen datasets. Additionally, we propose the GPGM that generates uniform and unlimited query points in sparse voxel space with arbitrary resolution. | 2024 | AlphaFin: Benchmarking Financial Analysis with Retrieval-Augmented Stock-Chain FrameworkabstractThe task of financial analysis primarily encompasses two key areas: stock trend prediction and the corresponding financial question answering. Currently, machine learning and deep learning algorithms (ML&DL) have been widely applied for stock trend predictions, leading to significant progress. However, these methods fail to provide reasons for predictions, lacking interpretability and reasoning processes. Also, they can not integrate textual information such as financial news or reports. Meanwhile, large language models (LLM) have remarkable textual understanding and generation ability. But due to the scarcity of financial training datasets and limited integration with real-time knowledge, LLM still suffer from hallucinations and unable to keep up with the latest information. To tackle these challenges, we first release AlphaFin datasets, combining traditional research datasets, real-time financial data, and handwritten chain-of-thought (CoT) data. It has positive impact on training LLM for completing financial analysis. We then use AlphaFin datasets to benchmark a state-of-the-art method, called Stock-Chain, for effectively tackling the financial analysis task, which integrates retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques. | 2024 | Multi-behavior Enhanced Self-supervised Graph Learning for Social RecommendationabstractSocial recommendation (SR) achieves better recommendation performance by incorporating social relations among users. Recently, with the emergence of graph neural networks (GNNs), many efforts have been devoted to developing GNN- based SR systems. However, two important challenges have not been effectively addressed yet: (i) Most existing SR methods are only designed for one target behavior while ignoring other auxiliary behaviors. (ii) Although there exist noisy connections in both user-item interaction graphs (interaction domain) and user-user social graphs (social domain), the robustness of SR models has been less explored. To tackle the above challenges, we innovatively propose a Multi-behavior enhanced Self-supervised graph learning framework for Social Recommendation (MSSR). Specifically, we first utilize a GNN-based module to learn the representations of users and items, which carefully distinguishes the strength of different behaviors. In addition, we design a selfsupervised module that generates different contrastive views by adding in-distribution perturbations to the representation space and improves the robustness of MSSR with cross-view contrastive learning. Finally, the above two modules are jointly optimized. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of MSSR over various state-of-the-art methods. Yong Xu 0007 |

| 2024 | Text-Conditional Attribute Alignment Across Latent Spaces for 3D Controllable Face Image SynthesisabstractWith the advent of generative models and vision-language pre-training, significant improvement has been made in text-driven face manipulation. The text embedding can be used as target supervision for expression control. However, it is non-trivial to associate with its 3D attributes, i.e., pose and illumination. To address these issues, we propose a Text-conditional Attribute aLignment approach for 3D controllable face image synthesis, and our model is referred to as TcALign. Specifically, since the 3D rendered image can be precisely controlled with the 3D face representation, we first propose a Text-conditional 3D Editor to produce the target face representation to realize text-driven manipulation in the 3D space. An attribute embedding space spanned by the target-related attributes embeddings is also introduced to infer the disentangled task-specific direction. Next, we train a cross-modal latent mapping network conditioned on the derived difference of 3D representation to infer a correct vector in the latent space of Style-GAN. This correction vector learning design can accurately transfer the attribute manipulation on 3D images to 2D images. We show that the proposed method delivers more precise text-driven multi-attribute manipulation for 3D controllable face image synthesis. | 2024 | VRetouchEr: Learning Cross-Frame Feature Interdependence with Imperfection Flow for Face Retouching in VideosabstractFace Video Retouching is a complex task that often requires labor-intensive manual editing. Conventional image retouching methods perform less satisfactorily in terms of generalization performance and stability when applied to videos without exploiting the correlation among frames. To address this issue, we propose a Video Retouching transformEr to remove facial imperfections in videos, which is referred to as VRetouchEr. Specifically, we estimate the apparent motion of imperfections between two consecutive frames, and the resulting displacement vectors are used to refine the imperfection map, which is synthesized from the current frame together with the corresponding encoder features. The flow-based imperfection refinement is critical for precise and stable retouching across frames. To leverage the temporal contextual information, we inject the refined imperfection map into each transformer block for multi-frame masked attention computation, such that we can capture the interdependence between the current frame and multiple reference frames. As a result, the imperfection regions can be replaced with normal skin with high fidelity, while at the same time keeping the other regions unchanged. | 2024 | UrbanGPT: Spatio-Temporal Large Language ModelsabstractSpatio-temporal prediction aims to forecast and gain insights into the ever-changing dynamics of urban environments across both time and space. Its purpose is to anticipate future patterns, trends, and events in diverse facets of urban life, including transportation, population movement, and crime rates. Although numerous efforts have been dedicated to developing neural network techniques for accurate predictions on spatio-temporal data, it is important to note that many of these methods heavily depend on having sufficient labeled data to generate precise spatio-temporal representations. | 2024 | Enhancing Underwater Images via Asymmetric Multi-Scale Invertible NetworksabstractUnderwater images, often plagued by complex degradation, pose significant challenges for image enhancement. To address these challenges, the paper redefines underwater image enhancement as an image decomposition problem and proposes a deep invertible neural network (INN) that accurately predicts both the latent image and the degradation effects. Instead of using an explicit formation model to describe the degradation process, the INN adheres to the constraints of the image decomposition model, providing necessary regularization for model training, particularly in the absence of supervision on degradation effects. Taking into account the diverse scales of degradation factors, the INN is structured on a multi-scale basis to effectively manage the varied scales of degradation factors. Moreover, the INN incorporates several asymmetric design elements that are specifically optimized for the decomposition model and the unique physics of underwater imaging. | 2024 | Enhancing texture representation with deep tracing pattern encodingabstractTexture representation is a challenging problem due to the complex underlying physics of texture as well as the variations caused by changes in viewpoint. Recent progress in texture analysis has been made by the power of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in feature learning . However, most current methods aggregate the features from the last convolutional layer of the CNN to obtain a global feature vector, which fails to leverage shallow low-level visual cues and cross-layer feature patterns, limiting their performance. In this paper, we propose to trace the features generated along the convolutional layers via a histogram of local 3D invariant binary patterns, called deep tracing patterns. This leads to a highly discriminative yet robust global feature representation module. Building such a module into a CNN backbone, we develop an effective approach for texture recognition. Extensive experiments on six benchmark datasets show that the proposed approach provides a discriminative and robust texture descriptor , with state-of-the-art performance achieved. | 2024 | Image Smoothing via Multiscale Global PerceptionabstractImage smoothing provides a fundamental operation for image processing, with a broad spectrum of applications. It is a challenging task which requires global analysis on image patterns with scale awareness. Existing deep models for image smoothing are insufficiently efficient in global perception and multi-scale processing. This paper proposes a deep model with an efficient multi-scale fusion architecture and a series of global processing blocks. | 2024 | Spatial Adaptive Filter Network With Scale-Sharing Convolution for Image DemoiréingabstractRemoving moiré patterns is a challenging task as it is a spatially varying degradation that varies in shape, color and scale. Existing image restoration models often rely on static convolutional neural networks (CNNs)-based architectures, and hence potentially suboptimal for addressing the diverse manifestations of moiré patterns across different images and spatial positions. To this end, we propose a spatially adaptive neural network for image demoiréing. This network introduces a dual-branch filter prediction module engineered to predict pixel-wise adaptive filters that can process moiré patterns of varying orientations and color-shift issues. To further tackle the challenge presented by scale variability, a scale-sharing convolution module is proposed, utilizing pixel-wise adaptive filters with multiple dilations to handle moiré patterns of different sizes but similar shapes effectively. | 2024 | Deep Blind Image Quality Assessment Using Dynamic Neural Model With Dual-Order StatisticsabstractDeep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have increasingly become a prominent method for blind image quality assessment (BIQA). The process of quality assessment typically involves feature extraction, average-based pooling, and quality regression. Based on this process, as well as the consensus that the visual quality of an image mainly relies on its content and distortions, this work improves CNNs for BIQA in two ways. First, considering the content-awareness of visual quality perception, we incorporate content-awareness via a dynamic filtering module to extract content-adaptive features and a dynamic regression module to learn content-adaptive perception rules based on local content and global semantics. Second, considering distortion-sensitivity in visual quality perception, we introduce second-order global variance pooling and combine it with global average pooling (GAP). First-order pooling methods like GAP are limited in distinguishing complex distortions that cause local degradation while preserving global features. Thus, pooling with dual-order statistics enables a more distortion-sensitive and discriminative global representation. These two improvements result in a content-adaptive BIQA model with a dual-order global pooling mechanism, improving generalization on diverse images with varying contents and distortion types. Extensive experiments on synthetic and authentic distortion datasets demonstrate state-of-the-art performance of the proposed approach. | 2024 | Multi-Behavior Graph Neural Networks for Recommender SystemabstractRecommender systems have been demonstrated to be effective to meet user's personalized interests for many online services (e.g., E-commerce and online advertising platforms). Recent years have witnessed the emerging success of many deep-learning-based recommendation models for augmenting collaborative filtering (CF) architectures with various neural network architectures, such as multilayer perceptron and autoencoder. However, the majority of them model the user-item relationship with single type of interaction, while overlooking the diversity of user behaviors on interacting with items, which can be click, add-to-cart, tag-as-favorite, and purchase. Such various types of interaction behaviors have great potential in providing rich information for understanding the user preferences. In this article, we pay special attention on user-item relationships with the exploration of multityped user behaviors. Technically, we contribute a new multi-behavior graph neural network (MBRec), which specially accounts for diverse interaction patterns and the underlying cross-type behavior interdependencies. In the MBRec framework, we develop a graph-structured learning framework to perform expressive modeling of high-order connectivity in behavior-aware user-item interaction graph. After that, a mutual relationship encoder is proposed to adaptively uncover complex relational structures and make aggregations across layer-specific behavior representations. Through comprehensive evaluation on real-world datasets, the advantages of our MBRec method have been validated under different experimental settings. Further analysis verifies the positive effects of incorporating the multi-behavioral context into the recommendation paradigm. In addition, the conducted case studies offer insights into the interpretability of user multi-behavior representations. We release our model implementation at https://github.com/akaxlh/MBRec. | 2023 | Coherent Event Guided Low-Light Video EnhancementabstractWith frame-based cameras, capturing fast-moving scenes without suffering from blur often comes at the cost of low SNR and low contrast. Worse still, the photometric constancy that enhancement techniques heavily relied on is fragile for frames with short exposure. Event cameras can record brightness changes at an extremely high temporal resolution. For low-light videos, event data are not only suitable to help capture temporal correspondences but also provide alternative observations in the form of intensity ratios between consecutive frames and exposure-invariant information. Motivated by this, we propose a low-light video enhancement method with hybrid inputs of events and frames. Specifically, a neural network is trained to establish spatiotemporal coherence between visual signals with different modalities and resolutions by constructing correlation volume across space and time. | 2023 | Disentangled Graph Social RecommendationabstractSocial recommender systems have drawn a lot of attention in many online web services, because of the incorporation of social information between users in improving recommendation results. Despite the significant progress made by existing solutions, we argue that current methods fall short in two limitations: (1) Existing social-aware recommendation models only consider collaborative similarity between items, how to incorporate item-wise semantic relatedness is less explored in current recommendation paradigms. (2) Current social recommender systems neglect the entanglement of the latent factors over heterogeneous relations (e.g., social connections, user-item interactions). Learning the disentangled representations with relation heterogeneity poses great challenge for social recommendation. In this work, we design a Disentangled Graph Neural Network (DGNN) with the integration of latent memory units, which empowers DGNN to maintain factorized representations for heterogeneous types of user and item connections. Additionally, we devise new memory-augmented message propagation and aggregation schemes under the graph neural architecture, allowing us to recursively distill semantic relatedness into the representations of users and items in a fully automatic manner. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets verify the effectiveness of our model by achieving great improvement over state-of-the-art recommendation techniques. | 2023 | RefBERT: A Two-Stage Pre-trained Framework for Automatic Rename RefactoringabstractRefactoring is an indispensable practice of improving the quality and maintainability of source code in software evolution. Rename refactoring is the most frequently performed refactoring that suggests a new name for an identifier to enhance readability when the identifier is poorly named. However, most existing works only identify renaming activities between two versions of source code, while few works express concern about how to suggest a new name. In this paper, we study automatic rename refactoring on variable names, which is considered more challenging than other rename refactoring activities. We first point out the connections between rename refactoring and various prevalent learning paradigms and the difference between rename refactoring and general text generation in natural language processing. Based on our observations, we propose RefBERT, a two-stage pre-trained framework for rename refactoring on variable names. RefBERT first predicts the number of sub-tokens in the new name and then generates sub-tokens accordingly. Several techniques, including constrained masked language modeling, contrastive learning, and the bag-of-tokens loss, are incorporated into RefBERT to tailor it for automatic rename refactoring on variable names. Through extensive experiments on our constructed refactoring datasets, we show that the generated variable names of RefBERT are more accurate and meaningful than those produced by the existing method. | 2023 | EALink: An Efficient and Accurate Pre-Trained Framework for Issue-Commit Link RecoveryabstractIssue-commit links, as a type of software traceability links, play a vital role in various software development and maintenance tasks. However, they are typically deficient, as developers often forget or fail to create tags when making commits. Existing studies have deployed deep learning techniques, including pretrained models, to improve automatic issue-commit link recovery. Despite their promising performance, we argue that previous approaches have four main problems, hindering them from recovering links in large software projects. To overcome these problems, we propose an efficient and accurate pre-trained framework called EALink for issue-commit link recovery. EALink requires much fewer model parameters than existing pre-trained methods, bringing efficient training and recovery. Moreover, we design various techniques to improve the recovery accuracy of EALink. We construct a large-scale dataset and conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate the power of EALink. Results show that EALink outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by a large margin (15.23%-408.65%) on various evaluation metrics. Meanwhile, its training and inference overhead is orders of magnitude lower than existing methods. We provide our implementation and data at https://github.com/KDEGroup/EALink. | 2023 | GPT-ST: Generative Pre-Training of Spatio-Temporal Graph Neural NetworksabstractIn recent years, there has been a rapid development of spatio-temporal prediction techniques in response to the increasing demands of traffic management and travel planning. While advanced end-to-end models have achieved notable success in improving predictive performance, their integration and expansion pose significant challenges. This work aims to address these challenges by introducing a spatio-temporal pre-training framework that seamlessly integrates with downstream baselines and enhances their performance. The framework is built upon two key designs: (i) We propose a spatio-temporal mask autoencoder as a pre-training model for learning spatio-temporal dependencies. The model incorporates customized parameter learners and hierarchical spatial pattern encoding networks. These modules are specifically designed to capture spatio-temporal customized representations and intra- and inter-cluster region semantic relationships, which have often been neglected in existing approaches. (ii) We introduce an adaptive mask strategy as part of the pre-training mechanism. This strategy guides the mask autoencoder in learning robust spatio-temporal representations and facilitates the modeling of different relationships, ranging from intra-cluster to inter-cluster, in an easy-to-hard training manner. Extensive experiments conducted on representative benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. | 2023 | Graph Transformer for RecommendationabstractThis paper presents a novel approach to representation learning in recommender systems by integrating generative self-supervised learning with graph transformer architecture. We highlight the importance of high-quality data augmentation with relevant self-supervised pretext tasks for improving performance. Towards this end, we propose a new approach that automates the self-supervision augmentation process through a rationale-aware generative SSL that distills informative user-item interaction patterns. The proposed recommender with Graph Transformer (GFormer) that offers parameterized collaborative rationale discovery for selective augmentation while preserving global-aware user-item relationships. | 2023 | Heterogeneous Graph Contrastive Learning for RecommendationabstractGraph Neural Networks (GNNs) have become powerful tools in modeling graph-structured data in recommender systems. However, real-life recommendation scenarios usually involve heterogeneous relationships (e.g., social-aware user influence, knowledge-aware item dependency) which contains fruitful information to enhance the user preference learning. In this paper, we study the problem of heterogeneous graph-enhanced relational learning for recommendation. Recently, contrastive self-supervised learning has become successful in recommendation. In light of this, we propose a Heterogeneous Graph Contrastive Learning (HGCL), which is able to incorporate heterogeneous relational semantics into the user-item interaction modeling with contrastive learning-enhanced knowledge transfer across different views. However, the influence of heterogeneous side information on interactions may vary by users and items. To move this idea forward, we enhance our heterogeneous graph contrastive learning with meta networks to allow the personalized knowledge transformer with adaptive contrastive augmentation. The experimental results on three real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of HGCL over state-of-the-art recommendation methods. Through ablation study, key components in HGCL method are validated to benefit the recommendation performance improvement. | 2023 | Graph-less Collaborative FilteringabstractGraph neural networks (GNNs) have shown the power in representation learning over graph-structured user-item interaction data for collaborative filtering (CF) task. However, with their inherently recursive message propagation among neighboring nodes, existing GNN-based CF models may generate indistinguishable and inaccurate user (item) representations due to the over-smoothing and noise effect with low-pass Laplacian smoothing operators. In addition, the recursive information propagation with the stacked aggregators in the entire graph structures may result in poor scalability in practical applications. Motivated by these limitations, we propose a simple and effective collaborative filtering model (SimRec) that marries the power of knowledge distillation and contrastive learning. In SimRec, adaptive transferring knowledge is enabled between the teacher GNN model and a lightweight student network, to not only preserve the global collaborative signals, but also address the over-smoothing issue with representation recalibration. Empirical results on public datasets show that SimRec archives better efficiency while maintaining superior recommendation performance compared with various strong baselines. | 2023 | Self-Supervised Blind Image Deconvolution via Deep Generative Ensemble LearningabstractBlind image deconvolution (BID) is about recovering a latent image with sharp details from its blurred observation generated by the convolution with an unknown smoothing kernel. Recently, deep generative priors from untrained neural networks (NNs) have emerged as a promising deep learning approach for BID, with the benefit of being free of external training samples. However, existing untrained-NN-based BID methods may suffer from under-deblurring or overfitting. In this paper, we propose an ensemble approach to better exploit the priors from untrained NNs for BID, which aggregates the deblurring results of multiple untrained NNs for improvement. To enjoy both the effectiveness and computational efficiency in ensemble learning, the untrained NNs are designed with a specific shared-base and multi-head architecture. In addition, a kernel-centering layer is proposed for handling the shift ambiguity among different predictions during ensemble, which also improves the robustness of kernel prediction to the setting of the kernel size parameter. Extensive experiments show that the proposed approach noticeably outperforms both exiting dataset-free methods and dataset-based methods. Mingqin Chen, Yuhui Quan, Yong Xu 0007, Hui Ji 0002 |

| 2023 | Image Desnowing via Deep Invertible SeparationabstractImages taken on snowy days often suffer from severe negative visual effects caused by snowflakes. The task of removing snowflakes from a snowy image is known as image desnowing, which is challenging as image details are easily mistakenly treated and thus may be significantly lost during snowflake removal. Leveraging invertible neural networks (INNs), this paper presents a deep learning-based method for single image desnowing, which can remove snowflakes accurately while preserving image details well. Interpreting desnowing as an image decomposition problem, we propose an INN composed of two asymmetric interactive paths for predicting a latent image and a snowflake layer respectively. Such an INN is able to progressively refine the features of both latent images and snowflake layers for disentanglement, while retaining all information possibly relevant to latent image reconstruction. In addition, an attentive coupling layer supervised by snowflake masks is introduced to enhance feature dismantlement and a coupling-in-coupling structure is developed for further improvement. Extensive experiments show that, the proposed method outperforms existing ones on three benchmark datasets of synthetic and real-world images, and meanwhile it also shows advantages in terms of model size and computational efficiency. | 2023 | Multi-Behavior Sequential Recommendation With Temporal Graph TransformerabstractModeling time-evolving preferences of users with their sequential item interactions, has attracted increasing attention in many online applications. Hence, sequential recommender systems have been developed to learn the dynamic user interests from the historical interactions for suggesting items. However, the interaction pattern encoding functions in most existing sequential recommender systems have thus far focused on singular type of user-item interactions. In practice, user-item interactive behaviors are often multi-typed (e.g., browse, add-to-favorite, purchase) with complex cross-type behavior inter-dependencies. Learning from informative representations of users and items based on their multi-typed interaction data, is of great importance to accurately characterize the time-evolving user preference. This work tackles the dynamic user-item relation learning with the awareness of multi-behavior interactive patterns. Towards this end, we propose a Temporal Graph-Structured Transformer (TGST) to jointly capture dynamic short-term and long-range user-item interactive patterns, by exploring the evolving structural dependency across different types of behaviors. This new TGST framework endows the sequential recommendation architecture to distill dedicated knowledge for type-specific behavior relational context. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets indicate that our method consistently outperforms various state-of-the-art baselines. Further experimental studies show that TGST can offer insights of interpretable explanations by capturing multi-behavioral patterns in a dynamic environment. | 2022 | SphericGAN: Semi-supervised Hyper-spherical Generative Adversarial Networks for Fine-grained Image SynthesisabstractGenerative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based models have greatly facilitated image synthesis. However, the model performance may be degraded when applied to finegrained data, due to limited training samples and subtle distinction among categories. Different from generic GAN-s, we address the issue from a new perspective of discovering and utilizing the underlying structure of real data to explicitly regularize the spatial organization of latent space. To reduce the dependence of generative models on labeled data, we propose a semi-supervised hyper-spherical GAN for class-conditional fine-grained image generation, and our model is referred to as SphericGAN. By projecting random vectors drawn from a prior distribution onto a hyper-sphere, we can model more complex distributions, while at the same time the similarity between the resulting latent vectors depends only on the angle, but not on their magnitudes. On the other hand, we also incorporate a mapping network to map real images onto the hyper-sphere, and match latent vectors with the underlying structure of real data via real-fake cluster alignment. As a result, we obtain a spatially organized latent space, which is useful for capturing class-independent variation factors. The experi-mental results suggest that our SphericGAN achieves state-of-the-art performance in synthesizing high-fidelity images with precise class semantics. | 2022 | Fine-Grained Object Classification via Self-Supervised Pose AlignmentabstractSemantic patterns offine-grained objects are determined by subtle appearance difference of local parts, which thus inspires a number of part-based methods. However, due to uncontrollable object poses in images, distinctive de-tails carried by local regions can be spatially distributed or even self-occluded, leading to a large variation on ob-ject representation. For discounting pose variations, this paper proposes to learn a novel graph based object rep-resentation to reveal a global configuration of local parts for self-supervised pose alignment across classes, which is employed as an auxiliary feature regularization on a deep representation learning network. Moreover, a coarse-to-fine supervision together with the proposed pose-insensitive constraint on shallow-to-deep sub-networks encourages discriminative features in a curriculum learning manner. | 2022 | Spatial-Temporal Hypergraph Self-Supervised Learning for Crime PredictionabstractCrime has become a major concern in many cities, which calls for the rising demand for timely predicting citywide crime occurrence. Accurate crime prediction results are vital for the beforehand decision-making of government to alleviate the increasing concern about the public safety. While many efforts have been devoted to proposing various spatial-temporal forecasting techniques to explore dependence across locations and time periods, most of them follow a supervised learning manner, which limits their spatial-temporal representation ability on sparse crime data. Inspired by the recent success in self-supervised learning, this work proposes a Spatial-Temporal Self-Supervised Hypergraph Learning framework (ST-HSL) to tackle the label scarcity issue in crime prediction. Specifically, we propose the cross-region hypergraph structure learning to encode region-wise crime dependency under the entire urban space. Furthermore, we design the dual-stage self-supervised learning paradigm, to not only jointly capture local- and global-level spatial-temporal crime patterns, but also supplement the sparse crime representation by augmenting region self-discrimination. We perform extensive experiments on two real-life crime datasets. Evaluation results show that our ST-HSL significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines. | 2022 | Deep Blind Image Quality Assessment Using Dual-Order StatisticsabstractDeep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become a promising approach to blind image quality assessment (BIQA). Existing CNN-based BIQA methods often employ global average pooling (GAP) to aggregate feature maps into a fixed-size representation for regression, so as to handle input images with varying sizes. However, GAP is only capable of extracting the first-order statistics of feature distributions, which is ineffective for distinguishing complex distortions that cause local degradation or preserve global features. To tackle this problem, we introduce the second-order global covariance pooling (GCP) for aggregating feature maps, leading to a more distortion-sensitive and more discriminative global representation. By incorporating GCP and GAP into a ResNet backbone, we propose an effective deep model for BIQA. The experimental results on five BIQA benchmark datasets, including both the synthetic and authentic ones, have demon-strated the excellent performance of the proposed method. | 2022 | No-Reference Image Quality Assessment Using Dynamic Complex-Valued Neural ModelabstractDeep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become a promising approach to no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA). This paper aims at improving the power of CNNs for NR-IQA in two aspects. Firstly, motivated by the deep connection between complex-valued transforms and human visual perception, we introduce complex-valued convolutions and phase-aware activations beyond traditional real-valued CNNs, which improves the accuracy of NR-IQA without bringing noticeable additional computational costs. Secondly, considering the content-awareness of visual quality perception, we include a dynamic filtering module for better extracting content-aware features, which predicts features based on both local content and global semantics. These two improvements lead to a complex-valued content-aware neural NR-IQA model with good generalization. | 2022 | SwinTrack: A Simple and Strong Baseline for Transformer TrackingabstractRecently Transformer has been largely explored in tracking and shown state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. However, existing efforts mainly focus on fusing and enhancing features generated by convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The potential of Transformer in representation learning remains under-explored. In this paper, we aim to further unleash the power of Transformer by proposing a simple yet efficient fully-attentional tracker, dubbed SwinTrack, within classic Siamese framework. In particular, both representation learning and feature fusion in SwinTrack leverage the Transformer architecture, enabling better feature interactions for tracking than pure CNN or hybrid CNN-Transformer frameworks. Besides, to further enhance robustness, we present a novel motion token that embeds historical target trajectory to improve tracking by providing temporal context. Our motion token is lightweight with negligible computation but brings clear gains. In our thorough experiments, SwinTrack exceeds existing approaches on multiple benchmarks. Particularly, on the challenging LaSOT, SwinTrack sets a new record with 0.713 SUC score. It also achieves SOTA results on other benchmarks. | 2022 | Hypergraph Contrastive Collaborative FilteringabstractCollaborative Filtering (CF) has emerged as fundamental paradigms for parameterizing users and items into latent representation space, with their correlative patterns from interaction data. Among various CF techniques, the development of GNN-based recommender systems, e.g., PinSage and LightGCN, has offered the state-of-the-art performance. However, two key challenges have not been well explored in existing solutions: i) The over-smoothing effect with deeper graph-based CF architecture, may cause the indistinguishable user representations and degradation of recommendation results. ii) The supervision signals (i.e., user-item interactions) are usually scarce and skewed distributed in reality, which limits the representation power of CF paradigms. To tackle these challenges, we propose a new self-supervised recommendation framework Hypergraph Contrastive Collaborative Filtering (HCCF) to jointly capture local and global collaborative relations with a hypergraph-enhanced cross-view contrastive learning architecture. In particular, the designed hypergraph structure learning enhances the discrimination ability of GNN-based CF paradigm, in comprehensively capturing the complex high-order dependencies among users. Additionally, our HCCF model effectively integrates the hypergraph structure encoding with self-supervised learning to reinforce the representation quality of recommender systems, based on the hypergraph self-discrimination. | 2022 | Contrastive Meta Learning with Behavior Multiplicity for RecommendationabstractA well-informed recommendation framework could not only help users identify their interested items, but also benefit the revenue of various online platforms (e.g., e-commerce, social media). Traditional recommendation models usually assume that only a single type of interaction exists between user and item, and fail to model the multiplex user-item relationships from multi-typed user behavior data, such as page view, add-to-favourite and purchase. While some recent studies propose to capture the dependencies across different types of behaviors, two important challenges have been less explored: i) Dealing with the sparse supervision signal under target behaviors (e.g., purchase). ii) Capturing the personalized multi-behavior patterns with customized dependency modeling. To tackle the above challenges, we devise a new model CML, Contrastive Meta Learning (CML), to maintain dedicated cross-type behavior dependency for different users. In particular, we propose a multi-behavior contrastive learning framework to distill transferable knowledge across different types of behaviors via the constructed contrastive loss. In addition, to capture the diverse multi-behavior patterns, we design a contrastive meta network to encode the customized behavior heterogeneity for different users. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets indicate that our method consistently outperforms various state-of-the-art recommendation methods. | 2022 | Self-Supervised Low-Light Image Enhancement Using Discrepant Untrained Network PriorsabstractThis paper proposes a deep learning method for low-light image enhancement, which exploits the generation capability of Neural Networks (NNs) while requiring no training samples except the input image itself. Based on the Retinex decomposition model, the reflectance and illumination of a low-light image are parameterized by two untrained NNs. The ambiguity between the two layers is resolved by the discrepancy between the two NNs in terms of architecture and capacity, while the complex noise with spatially-varying characteristics is handled by an illumination-adaptive self-supervised denoising module. The enhancement is done by jointly optimizing the Retinex decomposition and the illumination adjustment. | 2022 | Unsupervised Deep Background Matting Using Deep Matte PriorabstractBackground matting is a recently developed image matting approach, with applications to image and video editing. It refers to estimating both the alpha matte and foreground from a pair of images with and without foreground objects. Recent work has applied deep learning to background matting, with very promising performance achieved. However, existing deep models are supervised which require a large dataset with ground truth alpha mattes for training. To avoid the cost of data collection and possible bias in training data, this paper proposes a dataset-free unsupervised deep learning-based approach for background matting. Observing that the local smoothness of alpha matte can be well characterized by the untrained network prior called deep matte prior, we model the foreground and alpha matte using the priors encoded by two generative convolutional neural networks. To avoid possible overfitting during unsupervised learning, a two-stage learning scheme is developed which contains projection-based training and Bayesian post refinement. An alpha-matte-driven initialization scheme is also developed for performance boost. Even without calling external training data, the proposed approach provides competitive performance to recent supervised learning-based methods in the experiments. | 2022 | PDE Learning of Filtering and Propagation for Task-Aware Facial Intrinsic Image AnalysisabstractFiltering and propagation are two basic operations in image analysis and rendering, and they are also widely used in computer graphics and machine learning. However, the models of filtering and propagation were based on diverse mathematical formulations, which have not been fully understood. This article aims to explore the properties of both filtering and propagation models from a partial differential equation (PDE) learning perspective. We propose a unified PDE learning framework based on nonlinear reaction-diffusion with a guided map, graph Laplacian, and reaction weight. It reveals that: 1) the guided map and reaction weight determines whether the PDE produces filtering or propagation diffusion and 2) the kernel of graph Laplacian controls the diffusion pattern. Based on the proposed PDE framework, we derive the mathematical relations between different models, including learning to diffusion (LTD) model, label propagation, edit propagation, and edge-aware filter. In practical verification, we apply the PDE framework to design diffusion operations with the adaptive kernel to tackle the ill-posed problem of facial intrinsic image analysis (FIIA). A flexible task-aware FIIA system is built to achieve various facial rendering effects, such as face image relighting and delighting, artistic illumination transfer, illumination-aware face swapping, or transfiguring. Qualitative and quantitative experiments show the effectiveness and flexibility of task-aware FIIA and provide new insights on PDE learning for visual analysis and rendering. | 2022 | Semantic Regularized Class-Conditional GANs for Semi-Supervised Fine-Grained Image SynthesisabstractLearning effective generative models for natural image synthesis is a promising way to reduce the dependence of deep models on massive training data. This work focuses on Fine-Grained Image Synthesis (FGIS) in the semi-supervised setting where a small number of training instances are labeled. Different from generic image synthesis tasks, the available fine-grained data may be inadequate, and the differences among the object categories are typically subtle. To address these issues, we propose a Semantic Regularized class-conditional Generative Adversarial Network, which is referred to as SReGAN. We incorporate an additional discriminator and classifier into the generator-discriminator minimax game. Competing with two discriminators enforces the generator to model both marginal and class-conditional data distributions, which alleviates the problem of limited training data and labels. However, the discriminators may overlook the class separability. To induce the generator to discover the distinctions between classes, we construct semantically congruent and incongruent pairs in the generation process, and further regularize the generator by encouraging high similarities of congruent pairs, while penalizing that of incongruent ones in the classifier's feature space. We have conducted extensive experiments to verify the capability of SReGAN in generating high-fidelity images on a variety of FGIS benchmarks. Si Wu 0002, Xuhui Yang, Yong Xu 0007, Hau-San Wong |

| 2022 | Recurrent Exposure Generation for Low-Light Face DetectionabstractFace detection from low-light images is challenging due to limited photons and inevitable noise, which, to make the task even harder, are often spatially unevenly distributed. A natural solution is to borrow the idea frommulti-exposure, which captures multiple shots to obtain well-exposed images under challenging conditions. High-quality implementation/approximation of multi-exposure from a single image is however nontrivial. Fortunately, as shown in this paper, neither is such high-quality necessary since our task isface detectionrather thanimage enhancement. Specifically, we propose a novelRecurrent Exposure Generation (REG)module and couple it seamlessly with aMulti-Exposure Detection (MED)module, and thus significantly improve face detection performance by effectively inhibiting non-uniform illumination and noise issues. REG produces progressively and efficiently intermediate images corresponding to various exposure settings, and such pseudo-exposures are then fused by MED to detect faces across different lighting conditions. The proposed method, namedREGDet, is the first ‘detection-with-enhancement’ framework for low-light face detection. It not only encourages rich interaction and feature fusion across different illumination levels, but also enables effective end-to-end learning of the REG component to be better tailored for face detection. Moreover, as clearly shown in our experiments, REG can be flexibly coupled with different face detectors without extra low/normal-light image pairs for training. We tested REGDet on the DARK FACE low-light face benchmark with thorough ablation study, where REGDet outperforms previous state-of-the-arts by a significant margin, with only negligible extra parameters. | 2022 | Unreliable-to-Reliable Instance Translation for Semi-Supervised Pedestrian DetectionabstractGenerating realistic pedestrian instances in a semi-supervised setting is promising but challenging due to the limited labeled data. We propose an unreliable-to-reliable instance translation model (Un2Reliab) conditioned on unreliable instances which poorly align with pedestrians. Un2Reliab mainly consists of an encoder-decoder-like generative network and a discriminative network, which are jointly trained in a minimax game. We adopt regularization to ensure that the synthesized instances are semantically similar to the corresponding ground truth. Furthermore, to preserve the identities of persons, we propose another regularization to ensure that the synthesized instances associated with the same person should be consistent in appearance. As a result, Un2Reliab learns to restore the missing parts of the original instances. As a side benefit, the synthesized instances are brought into better alignment. Inclusion of the synthesized data improves both the diversity and quality of training data, which eventually leads to better generalization performance. Extensive experiments indicate that Un2Reliab is able to synthesize high-fidelity pedestrian instances and improve the previous state-of-the-art results on multiple semi-supervised pedestrian detection benchmarks. | 2022 | Nonblind Image Deblurring via Deep Learning in Complex FieldabstractNonblind image deblurring is about recovering the latent clear image from a blurry one generated by a known blur kernel, which is an often-seen yet challenging inverse problem in imaging. Its key is how to robustly suppress noise magnification during the inversion process. Recent approaches made a breakthrough by exploiting convolutional neural network (CNN)-based denoising priors in the image domain or the gradient domain, which allows using a CNN for noise suppression. The performance of these approaches is highly dependent on the effectiveness of the denoising CNN in removing magnified noise whose distribution is unknown and varies at different iterations of the deblurring process for different images. In this article, we introduce a CNN-based image prior defined in the Gabor domain. The prior not only utilizes the optimal space-frequency resolution and strong orientation selectivity of the Gabor transform but also enables using complex-valued (CV) representations in intermediate processing for better denoising. A CV CNN is developed to exploit the benefits of the CV representations, with better generalization to handle unknown noises over the real-valued ones. Combining our Gabor-domain CV CNN-based prior with an unrolling scheme, we propose a deep-learning-based approach to nonblind image deblurring. Extensive experiments have demonstrated the superior performance of the proposed approach over the state-of-the-art ones. Yuhui Quan, Peikang Lin, Yong Xu 0007, Yuesong Nan, Hui Ji 0002 |

| 2022 | Collaborative Reflection-Augmented Autoencoder Network for Recommender SystemsabstractAs the deep learning techniques have expanded to real-world recommendation tasks, many deep neural network based Collaborative Filtering (CF) models have been developed to project user-item interactions into latent feature space, based on various neural architectures, such as multi-layer perceptron, autoencoder, and graph neural networks. However, the majority of existing collaborative filtering systems are not well designed to handle missing data. Particularly, in order to inject the negative signals in the training phase, these solutions largely rely on negative sampling from unobserved user-item interactions and simply treating them as negative instances, which brings the recommendation performance degradation. To address the issues, we develop a C ollaborative R eflection-Augmented A utoencoder N etwork (CRANet), that is capable of exploring transferable knowledge from observed and unobserved user-item interactions. The network architecture of CRANet is formed of an integrative structure with a reflective receptor network and an information fusion autoencoder module, which endows our recommendation framework with the ability of encoding implicit user’s pairwise preference on both interacted and non-interacted items. Additionally, a parametric regularization-based tied-weight scheme is designed to perform robust joint training of the two-stage CRANetmodel. We finally experimentally validate CRANeton four diverse benchmark datasets corresponding to two recommendation tasks, to show that debiasing the negative signals of user-item interactions improves the performance as compared to various state-of-the-art recommendation techniques. | 2021 | Graph-Enhanced Multi-Task Learning of Multi-Level Transition Dynamics for Session-based RecommendationabstractSession-based recommendation plays a central role in a wide spectrum of online applications, ranging from e-commerce to online advertising services. However, the majority of existing session-based recommendation techniques (e.g., attention-based recurrent network or graph neural network) are not well-designed for capturing the complex transition dynamics exhibited with temporally-ordered and multi-level interdependent relation structures. These methods largely overlook the relation hierarchy of item transitional patterns. In this paper, we propose a multi-task learning framework with Multi-level Transition Dynamics (MTD), which enables the jointly learning of intra- and inter-session item transition dynamics in automatic and hierarchical manner. Towards this end, we first develop a position-aware attention mechanism to learn item transitional regularities within individual session. Then, a graph-structured hierarchical relation encoder is proposed to explicitly capture the cross-session item transitions in the form of high-order connectivities by performing embedding propagation with the global graph context. The learning process of intra- and inter-session transition dynamics are integrated, to preserve the underlying low- and high-level item relationships in a common latent space. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of MTD as compared to state-of-the-art baselines. | 2021 | Knowledge-aware Coupled Graph Neural Network for Social RecommendationabstractSocial recommendation task aims to predict users' preferences over items with the incorporation of social connections among users, so as to alleviate the sparse issue of collaborative filtering. While many recent efforts show the effectiveness of neural network-based social recommender systems, several important challenges have not been well addressed yet: (i) The majority of models only consider users’ social connections, while ignoring the inter-dependent knowledge across items; (ii) Most of existing solutions are designed for singular type of user-item interactions, making them infeasible to capture the interaction heterogeneity; (iii) The dynamic nature of user-item interactions has been less explored in many social-aware recommendation techniques. To tackle the above challenges, this work proposes a Knowledge-aware Coupled Graph Neural Network (KCGN) that jointly injects the inter-dependent knowledge across items and users into the recommendation framework. KCGN enables the high-order user- and item-wise relation encoding by exploiting the mutual information for global graph structure awareness. Additionally, we further augment KCGN with the capability of capturing dynamic multi-typed user-item interactive patterns. | 2021 | Knowledge-Enhanced Hierarchical Graph Transformer Network for Multi-Behavior RecommendationabstractAccurate user and item embedding learning is crucial for modern recommender systems. However, most existing recommendation techniques have thus far focused on modeling users' preferences over singular type of user-item interactions. Many practical recommendation scenarios involve multi-typed user interactive behaviors (e.g., page view, add-to-favorite and purchase), which presents unique challenges that cannot be handled by current recommendation solutions. In particular: i) complex inter-dependencies across different types of user behaviors; ii) the incorporation of knowledge-aware item relations into the multi-behavior recommendation framework; iii) dynamic characteristics of multi-typed user-item interactions. To tackle these challenges, this work proposes a Knowledge-Enhanced Hierarchical Graph Transformer Network (KHGT), to investigate multi-typed interactive patterns between users and items in recommender systems. Specifically, KHGT is build upon a graph-structured neural architecture to i) capture type-specific behavior semantics; ii) explicitly discriminate which types of user-item interactions are more important in assisting the forecasting task on the target behavior. Additionally, we further integrate the multi-modal graph attention layer with temporal encoding strategy, to empower the learned embeddings be reflective of both dedicated multiplex user-item and item-item collaborative relations, as well as the underlying interaction dynamics. | 2021 | Traffic Flow Forecasting with Spatial-Temporal Graph Diffusion NetworkabstractAccurate forecasting of citywide traffic flow has been playing critical role in a variety of spatial-temporal mining applications, such as intelligent traffic control and public risk assessment. While previous work has made significant efforts to learn traffic temporal dynamics and spatial dependencies, two key limitations exist in current models. First, only the neighboring spatial correlations among adjacent regions are considered in most existing methods, and the global interregion dependency is ignored. Additionally, these methods fail to encode the complex traffic transition regularities exhibited with time-dependent and multi-resolution in nature. To tackle these challenges, we develop a new traffic prediction framework–Spatial-Temporal Graph Diffusion Network (ST-GDN). In particular, ST-GDN is a hierarchically structured graph neural architecture which learns not only the local region-wise geographical dependencies, but also the spatial semantics from a global perspective. Furthermore, a multi-scale attention network is developed to empower ST-GDN with the capability of capturing multi-level temporal dynamics. Experiments on four real-life traffic datasets demonstrate that ST-GDN outperforms different types of state-of-the-art baselines. | 2021 | Social Recommendation with Self-Supervised Metagraph Informax NetworkabstractIn recent years, researchers attempt to utilize online social information to alleviate data sparsity for collaborative filtering, based on the rationale that social networks offers the insights to understand the behavioral patterns. However, due to the overlook of inter-dependent knowledge across items (e.g., knowledge graph dependencies between products), existing social recommender systems are insufficient to distill the heterogeneous collaborative signals from both user and item side. In this work, we propose Self- Supervised Metagraph Informax Network (SMIN) which investigates the potential of jointly incorporating social- and knowledge-aware relational structures into the user preference representation framework. To model relation heterogeneity, we design a metapath-guided heterogeneous graph neural network to aggregate feature embeddings from different types of meta-relations across users and items, empowering SMIN to maintain dedicated representations for multifaceted user- and item-wise dependencies. Additionally, to inject high-order collaborative signals into recommendation, we generalize the mutual information learning paradigm from vector space to a self-supervised graph-based collaborative filtering. This endows the expressive modeling of user-item interactive patterns, by exploring global-level collaborative relations and underlying isomorphic transformation property of graph topology. Experimental results on several real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model over various state-of-the-art recommendation methods. | 2021 | Deep Texture Recognition via Exploiting Cross-Layer Statistical Self-SimilarityabstractIn recent years, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become a prominent tool for texture recognition. The key of existing CNN-based approaches is aggregating the convolutional features into a robust yet discriminative description. This paper presents a novel feature aggregation module called CLASS (Cross-Layer Aggregation of Statistical Self-similarity) for texture recognition. We model the CNN feature maps across different layers, as a dynamic process which carries the statistical self-similarity (SSS), one well-known property of texture, from input image along the network depth dimension. The CLASS module characterizes the cross-layer SSS using a soft histogram of local differential box-counting dimensions of cross-layer features. The resulting descriptor encodes both cross-layer dynamics and local SSS of input image, providing additional discrimination over the often-used global average pooling. Integrating CLASS into a ResNet backbone, we develop CLASSNet, an effective deep model for texture recognition, which shows state-of-the-art performance in the experiments. | 2021 | Semi-Supervised Single-Stage Controllable GANs for Conditional Fine-Grained Image GenerationabstractPrevious state-of-the-art deep generative models improve fine-grained image generation quality by designing hierarchical model structures and synthesizing images across multiple stages. The learning process is typically performed without any supervision in object categories. To address this issue, while at the same time to alleviate the level of complexity of both model design and training, we propose a Single-Stage Controllable GAN (SSCGAN) for conditional fine-grained image synthesis in a semi-supervised setting. Considering the fact that fine-grained object categories may have subtle distinctions and shared attributes, we take into account three factors of variation for generative modeling: class-independent content, cross-class attributes and class semantics, and associate them with different variables. To ensure disentanglement among the variables, we maximize mutual information between the class-independent variable and synthesized images, map real data to the latent space of a generator to perform consistency regularization of cross-class attributes, and incorporate class semantic-based regularization into a discriminator’s feature space. We show that the proposed approach delivers a single-stage controllable generator and high-fidelity synthesized images of fine-grained categories. | 2021 | Hypergraph Neural Networks for Hypergraph MatchingabstractHypergraph matching is a useful tool to find feature correspondence by considering higher-order structural information. Recently, the employment of deep learning has made great progress in the matching of graphs, suggesting its potential for hypergraphs. Hence, in this paper, we present the first, to our best knowledge, unified hypergraph neural network (HNN) solution for hypergraph matching. Specifically, given two hypergraphs to be matched, we first construct an association hypergraph over them and convert the hypergraph matching problem into a node classification problem on the association hypergraph. Then, we design a novel hypergraph neural network to effectively solve the node classification problem. Being end-to-end trainable, our proposed method, named HNN-HM, jointly learns all its components with improved optimization. | 2021 | Multi-Behavior Enhanced Recommendation with Cross-Interaction Collaborative Relation ModelingabstractMany previous studies aim to augment collaborative filtering with deep neural network techniques, so as to achieve better recommendation performance. However, most existing deep learning-based recommender systems are designed for modeling singular type of user-item interaction behavior, which can hardly distill the heterogeneous relations between user and item. In practical recommendation scenarios, there exist multi-typed user behaviors, such as browse and purchase. Due to the overlook of user's multi-behavioral patterns over different items, existing recommendation methods are insufficient to capture heterogeneous collaborative signals from user multi-behavior data. Inspired by the strength of graph neural networks for structured data modeling, this work proposes a Graph Neural Multi-Behavior Enhanced Recommendation (GNMR) framework which explicitly models the dependencies between different types of user-item interactions under a graph-based message passing architecture. GNMR devises a relation aggregation network to model interaction heterogeneity, and recursively performs embedding propagation between neighboring nodes over the user-item interaction graph. | 2021 | Spatial-Temporal Sequential Hypergraph Network for Crime Prediction with Dynamic Multiplex Relation LearningabstractCrime prediction is crucial for public safety and resource optimization, yet is very challenging due to two aspects: i) the dynamics of criminal patterns across time and space, crime events are distributed unevenly on both spatial and temporal domains; ii) time-evolving dependencies between different types of crimes (e.g., Theft, Robbery, Assault, Damage) which reveal fine-grained semantics of crimes. To tackle these challenges, we propose Spatial-Temporal Sequential Hypergraph Network (ST-SHN) to collectively encode complex crime spatial-temporal patterns as well as the underlying category-wise crime semantic relationships. In specific, to handle spatial-temporal dynamics under the long-range and global context, we design a graph-structured message passing architecture with the integration of the hypergraph learning paradigm. To capture category-wise crime heterogeneous relations in a dynamic environment, we introduce a multi-channel routing mechanism to learn the time-evolving structural dependency across crime types. | 2021 | Discovering Density-Preserving Latent Space Walks in GANs for Semantic Image TransformationsabstractGenerative adversarial network (GAN)-based models possess superior capability of high-fidelity image synthesis. There are a wide range of semantically meaningful directions in the latent representation space of well-trained GANs, and the corresponding latent space walks are meaningful for semantic controllability in the synthesized images. To explore the underlying organization of a latent space, we propose an unsupervised Density-Preserving Latent Semantics Exploration model (DP-LaSE). The important latent directions are determined by maximizing the variations in intermediate features, while the correlation between the directions is minimized. Considering that latent codes are sampled from a prior distribution, we adopt a density-preserving regularization approach to ensure latent space walks are maintained in iso-density regions, since moving to a higher/lower density region tends to cause unexpected transformations. To further refine semantics-specific transformations, we perform subspace learning over intermediate feature channels, such that the transformations are limited to the most relevant subspaces. Extensive experiments on a variety of benchmark datasets demonstrate that DP-LaSE is able to discover interpretable latent space walks, and specific properties of synthesized images can thus be precisely controlled. | 2021 | Encoding Spatial Distribution of Convolutional Features for Texture RepresentationabstractExisting convolutional neural networks (CNNs) often use global average pooling (GAP) to aggregate feature maps into a single representation. However, GAP cannot well characterize complex distributive patterns of spatial features while such patterns play an important role in texture-oriented applications, e.g., material recognition and ground terrain classification. In the context of texture representation, this paper addressed the issue by proposing Fractal Encoding (FE), a feature encoding module grounded by multi-fractal geometry. Considering a CNN feature map as a union of level sets of points lying in the 2D space, FE characterizes their spatial layout via a local-global hierarchical fractal analysis which examines the multi-scale power behavior on each level set. This enables a CNN to encode the regularity on the spatial arrangement of image features, leading to a robust yet discriminative spectrum descriptor. In addition, FE has trainable parameters for data adaptivity and can be easily incorporated into existing CNNs for end-to-end training. We applied FE to ResNet-based texture classification and retrieval, and demonstrated its effectiveness on several benchmark datasets. Yong Xu 0007, Zhile Chen, Jinxiu Liang, Yuhui Quan |

| 2021 | Graph Meta Network for Multi-Behavior RecommendationabstractModern recommender systems often embed users and items into low-dimensional latent representations, based on their observed interactions. In practical recommendation scenarios, users often exhibit various intents which drive them to interact with items with multiple behavior types (e.g., click, tag-as-favorite, purchase). However, the diversity of user behaviors is ignored in most of existing approaches, which makes them difficult to capture heterogeneous relational structures across different types of interactive behaviors. Exploring multi-typed behavior patterns is of great importance to recommendation systems, yet is very challenging because of two aspects: i) The complex dependencies across different types of user-item interactions; ii) Diversity of such multi-behavior patterns may vary by users due to their personalized preference. To tackle the above challenges, we propose a Multi-Behavior recommendation framework with Graph Meta Network to incorporate the multi-behavior pattern modeling into a meta-learning paradigm. Our developed MB-GMN empowers the user-item interaction learning with the capability of uncovering type-dependent behavior representations, which automatically distills the behavior heterogeneity and interaction diversity for recommendations. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets show the effectiveness of MB-GMN by significantly boosting the recommendation performance as compared to various state-of-the-art baselines. | 2021 | Structure-Texture Image Decomposition Using Discriminative Patch RecurrenceabstractMorphology component analysis provides an effective framework for structure-texture image decomposition, which characterizes the structure and texture components by sparsifying them with certain transforms respectively. Due to the complexity and randomness of texture, it is challenging to design effective sparsifying transforms for texture components. This paper aims at exploiting the recurrence of texture patterns, one important property of texture, to develop a nonlocal transform for texture component sparsification. Since the plain patch recurrence holds for both cartoon contours and texture regions, the nonlocal sparsifying transform constructed based on such patch recurrence sparsifies both the structure and texture components well. As a result, cartoon contours could be wrongly assigned to the texture component, yielding ambiguity in decomposition. To address this issue, we introduce a discriminative prior on patch recurrence, that the spatial arrangement of recurrent patches in texture regions exhibits isotropic structure which differs from that of cartoon contours. Based on the prior, a nonlocal transform is constructed which only sparsifies texture regions well. Incorporating the constructed transform into morphology component analysis, we propose an effective approach for structure-texture decomposition. | 2021 | Multi-View 3D Shape Recognition via Correspondence-Aware Deep LearningabstractIn recent years, multi-view learning has emerged as a promising approach for 3D shape recognition, which identifies a 3D shape based on its 2D views taken from different viewpoints. Usually, the correspondences inside a view or across different views encode the spatial arrangement of object parts and the symmetry of the object, which provide useful geometric cues for recognition. However, such view correspondences have not been explicitly and fully exploited in existing work. In this paper, we propose a correspondence-aware representation (CAR) module, which explicitly finds potential intra-view correspondences and cross-view correspondences via k NN search in semantic space and then aggregates the shape features from the correspondences via learned transforms. Particularly, the spatial relations of correspondences in terms of their viewpoint positions and intra-view locations are taken into account for learning correspondence-aware features. Incorporating the CAR module into a ResNet-18 backbone, we propose an effective deep model called CAR-Net for 3D shape classification and retrieval. | 2021 | Factorized Tensor Dictionary Learning for Visual Tensor Data CompletionabstractThis paper aims at developing a dictionary-learning-based method for completing the visual tensor data with missing elements. Traditional dictionary learning approaches suffer from very high computational costs when processing high-dimensional tensor data. Some existing approaches for acceleration impose orthogonality constraints or rank-one decompositions on dictionary atoms; however, the expressibility of the resulting dictionary is rather limited. To address such issues, we propose a convolutional analysis model for tensor dictionary learning, where the update of sparse coefficients during dictionary learning is simple and fast. Furthermore, we propose an orthogonality-constrained convolutional factorization scheme for dictionary construction, in which each tensor dictionary atom is factorized by the convolution of two atoms selected from two orthogonal factor dictionaries respectively. This factorization scheme enables us to efficiently learn an expressive dictionary with over-completeness and non-rank-one atoms. Based on our convolutional analysis model and factorization scheme, an effective yet efficient dictionary learning method is proposed for visual tensor completion. Extensive experiments show that, our method not only outperforms existing dictionary-based approaches with relatively-low time cost, but also outperforms recent low-rank approaches. | 2020 | Spatial-Temporal Convolutional Graph Attention Networks for Citywide Traffic Flow ForecastingabstractTraffic flow prediction plays an important role in many spatial-temporal data applications, e.g., traffic management and urban planning. Various deep learning techniques are developed to model the traffic dynamic patterns with different neural network architectures, such as attention mechanism, recurrent neural network. However, two important challenges have yet to be well addressed: (i) Most of these methods solely focus on local spatial dependencies and ignore the global inter-region dependencies in terms of traffic distributions; (ii) It is important to capture channel-aware semantics when performing spatial-temporal information aggregation. To address these challenges, we propose a new traffic prediction framework--Spatial-Temporal Convolutional Graph Attention Network (ST-CGA), to enable the traffic prediction with the modeling of region dependencies, from locally to globally in a comprehensive manner. | 2020 | Joint Modeling of Local and Global Behavior Dynamics for Session-Based RecommendationabstractSession-based recommendation is critical in modern recommender systems, which aims to predict the next interested item given anonymous behavior sequences of users. While prior works have made efforts to addressing the session-based recommendation problem, two significant limitations exist: i) They ignore the fact that items may be correlated with other across different session units; ii) existing solutions are also limited in their assumption of rigidly ordered pattern over intra-session item transition, which may not be true in practice. To address these above limitations, we propose a Local-Global Session-based Recommendation framework–LGSR which generalizes the modeling of behavior dynamics from two perspectives: we first design a cross-session item dependency encoder to learn the inter-session item relation structures from a global perspective. Additionally, a dual-stage attentive aggregation module is developed to capture local item transition dynamics, without the restriction of rigid sequential process for jointly modeling user's current interest and intra-session purpose. With the exploration of both complex intra- and inter-session interest transitional regularities, our LGSR model enables the representation learning of user behavior dynamics via jointly mapping local and global signals into the same latent space. The experimental results on two real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed LGSR framework over state-of-the-art methods. | 2020 | Global Context Enhanced Social Recommendation with Hierarchical Graph Neural NetworksabstractSocial recommendation which aims to leverage social connections among users to enhance the recommendation performance. With the revival of deep learning techniques, many efforts have been devoted to developing various neural network-based social recommender systems, such as attention mechanisms and graph-based message passing frameworks. However, two important challenges have not been well addressed yet: (i) Most of existing social recommendation models fail to fully explore the multi-type user-item interactive behavior as well as the underlying cross-relational inter-dependencies. (ii) While the learned social state vector is able to model pair-wise user dependencies, it still has limited representation capacity in capturing the global social context across users. To tackle these limitations, we propose a new Social Recommendation framework with Hierarchical Graph Neural Networks (SR-HGNN). In particular, we first design a relation-aware reconstructed graph neural network to inject the cross-behavior collaborative semantics into the recommendation framework. | 2020 | Multiplex Behavioral Relation Learning for Recommendation via Memory Augmented Transformer NetworkabstractCapturing users' precise preferences is of great importance in various recommender systems (e.g., e-commerce platforms and online advertising sites), which is the basis of how to present personalized interesting product lists to individual users. In spite of significant progress has been made to consider relations between users and items, most of existing recommendation techniques solely focus on singular type of user-item interactions. However, user-item interactive behavior is often exhibited with multi-type (e.g., page view, add-to-favorite and purchase) and inter-dependent in nature. The overlook of multiplex behavior relations can hardly recognize the multi-modal contextual signals across different types of interactions, which limit the feasibility of current recommendation methods. To tackle the above challenge, this work proposes a Memory-Augmented Transformer Networks (MATN), to enable the recommendation with multiplex behavioral relational information, and joint modeling of type-specific behavioral context and type-wise behavior inter-dependencies, in a fully automatic manner. In our MATN framework, we first develop a transformer-based multi-behavior relation encoder, to make the learned interaction representations be reflective of the cross-type behavior relations. Furthermore, a memory attention network is proposed to supercharge MATN capturing the contextual signals of different types of behavior into the category-specific latent embedding space. Finally, a cross-behavior aggregation component is introduced to promote the comprehensive collaboration across type-aware interaction behavior representations, and discriminate their inherent contributions in assisting recommendations. | 2020 | Cartoon-Texture Image Decomposition using Orientation Characteristics in Patch RecurrenceabstractCartoon-texture image decomposition is about decomposing an image into the linear sum of two layers: cartoon and texture, where the key challenge is how to resolve the ambiguity between two layers. It is observed that the recurrence of texture patches occurs along multiple orientations, and the recurrence of cartoon patches only occurs along certain orientations. This paper proposes to separate these two layers by exploiting their orientation characteristics of image patch recurrence, i.e., isotropy property of texture patch recurrence versus anisotropy property of cartoon patch recurrence. Together with the sparsity-based regularizations in the image domain, a variational method is then developed in this paper for cartoon-texture decomposition. We focus on object or face detection in poor visibility enhancements caused by bad weathers (haze, rain) and low light conditions. To provide a more thorough examination and fair comparison, we introduce three benchmark sets collected in real-world hazy, rainy, and low-light conditions, respectively, with annotated objects/faces. We launched the UG2+ challenge Track 2 competition in IEEE CVPR 2019, aiming to evoke a comprehensive discussion and exploration about whether and how low-level vision techniques can benefit the high-level automatic visual recognition in various scenarios. To our best knowledge, this is the first and currently largest effort of its kind. Baseline results by cascading existing enhancement and detection models are reported, indicating the highly challenging nature of our new data as well as the large room for further technical innovations. Thanks to a large participation from the research community, we are able to analyze representative team solutions, striving to better identify the strengths and limitations of existing mindsets as well as the future directions. | 2019 | LaSOT: A High-Quality Benchmark for Large-Scale Single Object TrackingabstractIn this paper, we present LaSOT, a high-quality benchmark for Large-scale Single Object Tracking. LaSOT consists of 1,400 sequences with more than 3.5M frames in total. Each frame in these sequences is carefully and manually annotated with a bounding box, making LaSOT the largest, to the best of our knowledge, densely annotated tracking benchmark. The average video length of LaSOT is more than 2,500 frames, and each sequence comprises various challenges deriving from the wild where target objects may disappear and re-appear again in the view. By releasing LaSOT, we expect to provide the community with a large-scale dedicated benchmark with high quality for both the training of deep trackers and the veritable evaluation of tracking algorithms. Moreover, considering the close connections of visual appearance and natural language, we enrich LaSOT by providing additional language specification, aiming at encouraging the exploration of natural linguistic feature for tracking. A thorough experimental evaluation of 35 tracking algorithms on LaSOT is presented with detailed analysis, and the results demonstrate that there is still a big room for improvements. | 2019 | Adaptive GNN for Image Analysis and EditingabstractGraph neural network (GNN) has powerful representation ability, but optimal configurations of GNN are non-trivial to obtain due to diversity of graph structure and cascaded nonlinearities. This paper aims to understand some properties of GNN from a computer vision (CV) perspective. In mathematical analysis, we propose an adaptive GNN model by recursive definition, and derive its relation with two basic operations in CV: filtering and propagation operations. The proposed GNN model is formulated as a label propagation system with guided map, graph Laplacian and node weight. It reveals that 1) the guided map and node weight determine whether a GNN leads to filtering or propagation diffusion, and 2) the kernel of graph Laplacian controls diffusion pattern. In practical verification, we design a new regularization structure with guided feature to produce GNN-based filtering and propagation diffusion to tackle the ill-posed inverse problems of quotient image analysis (QIA), which recovers the reflectance ratio as a signature for image analysis or adjustment. A flexible QIA-GNN framework is constructed to achieve various image-based editing tasks, like face illumination synthesis and low-light image enhancement. Experiments show the effectiveness of the QIA-GNN, and provide new insights of GNN for image analysis and editing. Lingyu Liang, Yong Xu 0007 |

| 2019 | Multi-view Rank Pooling for 3D Object Recognition*abstract3D shape recognition via deep learning is drawing more and more attention due to huge industry interests. As 3D deep learning methods emerged, the view-based approaches have gained considerable success in object classification. Most of these methods focus on designing a pooling scheme to aggregate CNN features of multi-view images into a single compact one. However, these view-wise pooling techniques suffer from loss of visual information. To deal with this issue, an adaptive rank pooling layer is introduced in this paper. Unlike max-pooling which only considers the maximum or mean-pooling that treats each element indiscriminately, the proposed pooling layer takes all the elements into account and dynamically adjusts their importances during the training. Experiments conducted on ModelNet40 and ModelNet10 shows both efficiency and accuracy gain when inserting such a layer into a baseline CNN architecture. | 2018 | Exploiting Target Data to Learn Deep Convolutional Networks for Scene-Adapted Human DetectionabstractThe difference between sample distributions of public data sets and specific scenes can be very significant. As a result, the deployment of generic human detectors in real-world scenes most often leads to sub-optimal detection performance. To avoid the labor-intensive task of manual annotations, we propose a semi-supervised approach for training deep convolutional networks on partially labeled data. To exploit a large amount of unlabeled target data, the knowledge learnt from public data sets is transferred to new model training by adapting an auxiliary detector to the target scene. We hypothesize that the components of the auxiliary detector capture essential human characteristics useful for constructing a scene-adapted detector. A selective ensemble algorithm is proposed to select a subset of the components relevant to the target scene for recombination. The resulting model is applied for collecting high-confidence samples from unlabeled target data. Furthermore, a deep convolutional network is trained by progressively labeling and selecting new training samples in a self-paced way. The detailed experimental evaluation verifies the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach in scene-specific human detection. | 2018 | Semi-Supervised Image Classification With Self-Paced Cross-Task NetworksabstractIn a semi-supervised setting, direct training of a deep discriminative model on partially labeled images often suffers from overfitting and poor performance, because only a small number of labeled images are available, and errors in label propagation are, in many cases, inevitable. In this paper, we introduce an auxiliary clustering task to explore the structure of the image data, and judiciously weigh unlabeled data to alleviate the influence of ambiguous data on model training. For this purpose, we propose a cross-task network composed of two streams to jointly learn two tasks: classification and clustering. Based on the model predictions, a large number of pairwise constraints can be generated from unlabeled images, and are fed to the clustering stream. Since pairwise constraints encode weak supervision information, the clustering is tolerant of errors in labeling. Unlabeled images are weighted according to the distances to the clusters discovered, and a better discriminative model is trained on the classification stream associated with a weighted softmax loss. Furthermore, a self-paced learning paradigm is adopted to gradually train our deep model from easy examples to difficult ones. Experimental results on widely used image classification datasets confirm the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach. | 2016 | Sparse Coding for Classification via Discrimination EnsembleabstractDiscriminative sparse coding has emerged as a promising technique in image analysis and recognition, which couples the process of classifier training and the process of dictionary learning for improving the discriminability of sparse codes. Many existing approaches consider only a simple single linear classifier whose discriminative power is rather weak. In this paper, we proposed a discriminative sparse coding method which jointly learns a dictionary for sparse coding and an ensemble classifier for discrimination. The ensemble classifier is composed of a set of linear predictors and constructed via both subsampling on data and subspace projection on sparse codes. The advantages of the proposed method over the existing ones are multi-fold: better discriminability of sparse codes, weaker dependence on peculiarities of training data, and more expressibility of classifier for classification. These advantages are also justified in the experiments, as our method outperformed several recent methods in several recognition tasks. | 2015 | Removing Rain from a Single Image via Discriminative Sparse CodingabstractVisual distortions on images caused by bad weather conditions can have a negative impact on the performance of many outdoor vision systems. One often seen bad weather is rain which causes significant yet complex local intensity fluctuations in images. The paper aims at developing an effective algorithm to remove visual effects of rain from a single rainy image, i.e. separate the rain layer and the de-rained image layer from an rainy image. Built upon a non-linear generative model of rainy image, namely screen blend mode, we proposed a dictionary learning based algorithm for single image de-raining. The basic idea is to sparsely approximate the patches of two layers by very high discriminative codes over a learned dictionary with strong mutual exclusivity property. Such discriminative sparse codes lead to accurate separation of two layers from their non-linear composite. The experiments showed that the proposed method outperformed the existing single image de-raining methods on tested rain images. Yu Luo 0004, Yong Xu 0007, Hui Ji 0002 |

| 2015 | Characterizing dynamic textures with space-time lacunarity analysisabstractThis paper addresses the challenge of reliably capturing the temporal characteristics of local space-time patterns in dynamic texture (DT). A powerful DT descriptor is proposed, which enjoys strong robustness to viewpoint changes, illumination changes, and video deformation. Observing that local DT patterns are spatial-temporally distributed with stationary irregularities, we proposed to characterize the distributions of local binarized DT patterns along both the temporal and the spatial axes via lacunarity analysis. We also observed such irregularities are similar on the DT slices along the same axis but distinct between axes. Thus, the resulting lacunarity based features are averaged along each axis and concatenated as the final DT descriptor. We applied the proposed DT descriptor to DT classification and evaluated its performance on several benchmark datasets. The experimental results have demonstrated the power of the proposed descriptor in comparison with existing ones. Yuping Sun, Yong Xu 0007, Yuhui Quan |

| 2015 | Multiple Facial Image Editing Using Edge-Aware PDE LearningabstractThis paper introduces a novel facial editing tool, called edge-aware mask, to achieve multiple photo-realistic rendering effects in a unified framework. The edge-aware masks facilitate three basic operations for adaptive facial editing, including region selection, edit setting and region blending. Inspired by the state-of-the-art edit propagation and partial differential equation (PDE) learning method, we propose an adaptive PDE model with facial priors for masks generation through edge-aware diffusion. The edge-aware masks can automatically fit the complex region boundary with great accuracy and produce smooth transition between different regions, which significantly improves the visual consistence of face editing and reduce the human intervention. Then, a unified and flexible facial editing framework is constructed, which consists of layer decomposition, edge-aware masks generation, and layer/mask composition. The combinations of multiple facial layers and edge-aware masks can achieve various facial effects simultaneously, including face enhancement, relighting, makeup and face blending etc. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations were performed using different datasets for different facial editing tasks. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and flexibility of our methods, and the comparisons with the previous methods indicate that improved results are obtained using the combination of multiple edge-aware masks. The texture feature is constructed by concatenating the lacunarity-related parameters estimated from the multi-scale local binary patterns of image. Benefiting from the ability of lacunarity analysis to distinguish spatial patterns, our method is able to characterize the spatial distribution of local image structures from multiple scales. | 2013 | Wavelet Domain Multifractal Analysis for Static and Dynamic Texture ClassificationabstractIn this paper, we propose a new texture descriptor for both static and dynamic textures. The new descriptor is built on the wavelet-based spatial-frequency analysis of two complementary wavelet pyramids: standard multiscale and wavelet leader. These wavelet pyramids essentially capture the local texture responses in multiple high-pass channels in a multiscale and multiorientation fashion, in which there exists a strong power-law relationship for natural images. Such a power-law relationship is characterized by the so-called multifractal analysis. In addition, two more techniques, scale normalization and multiorientation image averaging, are introduced to further improve the robustness of the proposed descriptor. Combining these techniques, the proposed descriptor enjoys both high discriminative power and robustness against many environmental changes. We apply the descriptor for classifying both static and dynamic textures. Our method has demonstrated excellent performance in comparison with the state-of-the-art approaches in several public benchmark datasets. Hui Ji 0002, Haibin Ling, Yong Xu 0007 |

| 2012 | Contour-based recognitionabstractContour is an important cue for object recognition. In this paper, built upon the concept of torque in image space, we propose a new contour-related feature to detect and describe local contour information in images. There are two components for our proposed feature: One is a contour patch detector for detecting image patches with interesting information of object contour, which we call the Maximal/Minimal Torque Patch (MTP) detector. The other is a contour patch descriptor for characterizing a contour patch by sampling the torque values, which we call the Multi-scale Torque (MST) descriptor. Experiments for object recognition on the Caltech-101 dataset showed that the proposed contour feature outperforms other contour-related features and is on a par with many other types of features. When combing our descriptor with the complementary SIFT descriptor, impressive recognition results are observed. | 2011 | Dynamic texture classification using dynamic fractal analysisabstractIn this paper, we developed a novel tool called dynamic fractal analysis for dynamic texture (DT) classification, which not only provides a rich description of DT but also has strong robustness to environmental changes. The resulting dynamic fractal spectrum (DFS) for DT sequences consists of two components: One is the volumetric dynamic fractal spectrum component (V-DFS) that captures the stochastic self-similarities of DT sequences as 3D volume datasets; the other is the multi-slice dynamic fractal spectrum component (S-DFS) that encodes fractal structures of DT sequences on 2D slices along different views of the 3D volume. Various types of measures of DT sequences are collected in our approach to analyze DT sequences from different perspectives. The experimental evaluation is conducted on three widely used benchmark datasets. In all the experiments, our method demonstrated excellent performance in comparison with state-of-the-art approaches. | 2010 | A new texture descriptor using multifractal analysis in multi-orientation wavelet pyramidabstractBased on multifractal analysis in wavelet pyramids of texture images, a new texture descriptor is proposed in this paper that implicitly combines information from both spatial and frequency domains. Beyond the traditional wavelet transform, a multi-oriented wavelet leader pyramid is used in our approach that robustly encodes the multi-scale information of texture edgels. Moreover, the resulting texture model shows empirically a strong power law relationship for nature textures, which can be characterized well by multifractal analysis. Combined with a statistics on affine invariant local patches, our proposed texture descriptor is robust to scale and rotation changes, more general geometrical transforms and illumination variations. In addition, the proposed texture descriptor is computationally efficient since it does not require many expensive processing steps, e.g., texton generation and cross-bin comparisons, which are often used by existing methods. As an application, the proposed descriptor is applied to texture classification and the experimental results on several public texture datasets verified the accuracy and efficiency of our descriptor. | 2009 | Combining powerful local and global statistics for texture descriptionabstractA texture descriptor is proposed, which combines local highly discriminative features with the global statistics of fractal geometry to achieve high descriptive power, but also invariance to geometric and illumination transformations. As local measurements SIFT features are estimated densely at multiple window sizes and discretized. On each of the discretized measurements the fractal dimension is computed to obtain the so-called multifractal spectrum, which is invariant to geometric transformations and illumination changes. Finally to achieve robustness to scale changes, a multi-scale representation of the multifractal spectrum is developed using a framelet system, that is, a redundant tight wavelet frame system. Experiments on classification demonstrate that the descriptor outperforms existing methods on the UIUC as well as the UMD high-resolution dataset. | 2009 | Integrating local feature and global statistics for texture analysisabstractA main challenge for texture analysis is to construct a compact texture descriptor which is not only highly discriminative to intra-class textures, but also robust to inter-class variations, geometric and photometric changes. In this paper, a new texture descriptor is developed by integrating the local affine-invariant texture features and the global viewpoint-invariant statistics. Based on the pixel clustering using two state-ofart robust local texture descriptors (i.e. SIFT and SPIN), the proposed texture descriptor enables impressive invariance to a wide range of environmental changes (e.g. view changes, illumination changes, surface distortions) by characterizing the spatial distribution of pixel sets using multi-fractal analysis. Experiments on some real datasets (publicly available) showed that the proposed texture descriptor achieved better performance than some state-of-art techniques in texture retrieval and texture classification while the computation cost is significantly reduced. | 2006 | A Projective Invariant for TexturesabstractImage texture analysis has received a lot of attention in the past years. Researchers have developed many texture signatures based on texture measurements, for the purpose of uniquely characterizing the texture. Existing texture signatures, in general, are not invariant to 3D transforms such as view-point changes and non-rigid deformations of the texture surface, which is a serious limitation for many applications. In this paper, we introduce a new texture signature, called the multifractal spectrum (MFS). It provides an efficient framework combining global spatial invariance and local robust measurements. The MFS is invariant under the bi-Lipschitz map, which includes view-point changes and non-rigid deformations of the texture surface, as well as local affine illumination changes. Experiments demonstrate that the MFS captures the essential structure of textures with quite low dimension. Yong Xu 0007, Hui Ji 0002, Cornelia Fermüller |
