BAMAS: Structuring Budget-Aware Multi-Agent SystemsabstractLarge language model (LLM)-based multi-agent systems have emerged as a powerful paradigm for enabling autonomous agents to solve complex tasks. As these systems scale in complexity, cost becomes an important consideration for practical deployment. However, existing work rarely addresses how to structure multi-agent systems under explicit budget constraints. In this paper, we propose BAMAS, a novel approach for building multi-agent systems with budget awareness. BAMAS first selects an optimal set of LLMs by formulating and solving an Integer Linear Programming problem that balances performance and cost. It then determines how these LLMs should collaborate by leveraging a reinforcement learning-based method to select the interaction topology. Finally, the system is instantiated and executed based on the selected agents and their collaboration topology. We evaluate BAMAS on three representative tasks and compare it with state-of-the-art agent construction methods. Results show that BAMAS achieves comparable performance while reducing cost by up to 86%. Junyu Luo 0002, Xuanzhe Liu, Yiling Lou, Zhenpeng Chen 0001

MegaScale-MoE: Large-Scale Communication-Efficient Training of Mixture-of-Experts Models in ProductionabstractWe present MegaScale-MoE, a production system tailored for the efficient training of large-scale mixture-of-experts (MoE) models. MoE emerges as a promising architecture to scale large language models (LLMs) to unprecedented sizes, thereby enhancing model performance. However, existing MoE training systems experience a degradation in training efficiency, exacerbated by the escalating scale of MoE models and the continuous evolution of hardware. | 2026 | ShadowNPU: System and Algorithm Co-design for NPU-Centric On-Device LLM InferenceabstractRunning LLMs on devices like smartphones has become a key catalyst towards privacy-preserving mobile AI. In state-of-the-art frameworks, the attention operator falls back from the dedicated NPU to the public CPU/GPU due to its sensitivity to quantization. Such a fallback leads to hampered user experience and extra system scheduling complexity. To realize NPU-centric LLM inference, this paper presents shadowNPU, a system-algorithm codesigned sparse attention module with minimal reliance on CPU/GPU by only sparsely computing a very small number of tokens. The key idea is to hide the overhead of estimating the important tokens by offloading it to NPU. On top of this, it further incorporates insightful techniques including NPU compute graph bucketing, head-wise NPU-CPU/GPU pipeline and per-head fine-grained sparsity ratio to achieve high accuracy and efficiency. Compared to design alternatives, shadowNPU achieves the best performance with strictly limited CPU/GPU resource; it requires much less CPU/GPU resource to achieve on-par performance of SoTA frameworks. | 2026 | An Efficient Context Management System for On-Device LLMaaSabstractLarge language models (LLMs) are renovating the mobile AI, catalyzing novel mobile applications such as UI task automation. A new paradigm of mobile AI ecosystem emerges in the LLM era: LLM as a mobile OS service (LLMaaS), where LLM runs as a system service and exposes its functionality (language understanding and generation) to third-party apps. As a giant step towards on-device LLMaaS, this work presents Libra, a system that tackles with challenge in managing persistent LLM contexts (KV cache) under tight memory constraint. Libra manages the LLM contexts based on the fine-grained, chunk-wise, globally-optimized KV cache compression and swapping. Specifically, it integrates three novel techniques: (1) Tolerance-Aware Compression applies different compression rates to each chunk based on their attention scores. (2) Swapping-Recompute Pipeline simultaneously swaps and recomputes the LLM contexts to improve the hardware resource utilization. (3) Chunk Lifecycle Management judiciously determines when and what to evict to reduce the context switching overhead. Through comprehensive experiments on various edge devices, Libra reduces the context switching latency by up to 20 × and on average 9.7 × compared to competitive baselines. | 2026 | Epiphron: Resource-Efficient Distributed Key-Value StorageabstractIn-memory key-value storage necessitates a substantial quantity of computation and storage resources for both performance and scalability, thereby diminishing the resources available for user applications. The emergence of programmable network hardware, including SmartNICs and programmable switches, provides the opportunity to offload operations from server CPUs. We present Epiphron, a novel distributed in-memory key-value store architecture that co-designs with off-path SmartNICs and programmable switches. Facing the limited performance of off-path SmartNICs, Epiphron successfully achieves high resource efficiency while keeping load balancing and fault tolerance by$(i)$hybridizing erasure coding with replication in storage management,$(ii)$accelerating read operations with a new data plane design (conflict detection and RDMA-compatible forwarding) on programmable switches,$(iii)$employing a network protocol extended from one-sided RDMA. We evaluate Epiphron on Barefoot Tofino switches, NVIDIA BlueField-2 SmartNICs, and commodity servers. The experimental results demonstrate that compared to existing solutions, Epiphron improves throughput by up to 2.2× and consumes 47% less memory while completely bypassing server CPUs. | 2026 | Training With Integer-Only Arithmetic: Energy-Efficient Federated Learning With Mobile DSP OffloadingabstractAI is making mobile applications increasingly cooler, but also introduces serious privacy risks due to the extensive user data collection. Federated learning (FL), as a privacy-preserving machine learning paradigm, enables mobile devices to collaboratively learn a shared prediction model while keeping all training data on devices. However, a key obstacle towards practical cross-device FL training is the huge energy consumption, especially for lightweight mobile devices. Prior literature mostly optimizes the convergence speed and network communication cost. In this work, we first perform the experimental analysis of improving FL performance through low-precision training with energy-friendly Digital Signal Processor (DSP) on mobile devices. Then, we demonstrate that directly integrating the state-of-the-art INT8 (8-bit integer) training algorithm and classic FL protocols will significantly degrade the model accuracy. Finally, we propose a novel FL protocol, namelyQ-FedUpdate, incorporates two critical techniques: error-compensated aggregation and pipelined batch quantization. The former can ensure the tiny model updates be accumulated and take effects, and the latter can improve the DSP cache hit rate to reduce the context switching. Extensive experiments show that,Q-FedUpdatecan effectively reduce the on-device energy consumption by 21×, and accelerate the FL convergence by 6.1× with only 2% accuracy loss. | 2026 | RAGCache: Efficient Knowledge Caching for Retrieval-Augmented GenerationabstractRetrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has demonstrated substantial advancements in various natural language processing tasks by integrating the strengths of large language models (LLMs) and external knowledge databases. However, the retrieval step introduces long sequence generation and extra data dependency, resulting in long end-to-end latency. Our analysis benchmarks current RAG systems and reveals that, while the retrieval step poses performance challenges, it also offers optimization opportunities through its retrieval pattern and streaming search behavior. We propose RAGCache, a latency-optimized serving system tailored for RAG. RAGCache leverages the retrieval pattern to organize and cache the intermediate states of retrieved knowledge in a knowledge tree across the GPU and host memory hierarchy, reducing LLM generation time. RAGCache employs dynamic speculative pipelining to exploit the streaming search behavior, overlapping retrieval with LLM generation to minimize end-to-end latency. We implement RAGCache based on vLLM and Faiss, and evaluate it on both open-source and production datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that RAGCache reduces the time to first token (TTFT) by up to 4× and improves the throughput by up to 2.1× compared to vLLM integrated with Faiss. | 2026 | DrWASI: LLM-assisted Differential Testing for WebAssembly System Interface ImplementationsabstractWebAssembly (Wasm) is an emerging binary format that serves as a compilation target for over 40 programming languages. Wasm runtimes provide execution environments that enhance portability by abstracting away operating systems and hardware details. A key component in these runtimes is the WebAssembly System Interface (WASI), which manages interactions with operating systems, like file operations. Considering the critical role of Wasm runtimes, the community has aimed to detect their implementation bugs. However, no work has focused on WASI-specific bugs that can affect the original functionalities of running Wasm binaries and cause unexpected results. To fill the void, we present DrWASI , the first general-purpose differential testing framework for WASI implementations. Our approach uses a large language model to generate seeds and applies variant and environment mutation strategies to expand and enrich the test case corpus. We then perform differential testing across major Wasm runtimes. By leveraging dynamic and static information collected during and after the execution, DrWASI can identify bugs. Our evaluation shows that DrWASI uncovered 33 unique bugs, with all confirmed and 7 fixed by developers. This research represents a pioneering step in exploring a promising yet under-explored area of the Wasm ecosystem, providing valuable insights for stakeholders. | 2025 | Demo: Emulating Space Computing Networks with RHONEabstractThe rapid advancement in satellite technology with the adoption of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) devices and satellite constellation networking has given rise to Space Computing Networks (SCNs). While SCN research is typically conducted on experimental platforms due to high operational costs, the unique challenges of SCNs require special consideration. In this demo, we introduce Rhone, an emulator that bridges these gaps by achieving both satellite- and constellation-level fidelity (the accurate replication of satellite and constellation states, including power, thermal, and network conditions, as well as application performance) while ensuring usability. Rhone adopts a two-phase approach: i) an offline phase builds power, thermal, orbit, network, and computation models using real satellite telemetries and hardware-in-the-loop chip mirroring, and ii) an online phase executes container-based emulation integrated with these models. Evaluation shows Rhone's power and computation model errors under 5% and thermal model errors within 1.3 – 2.5°C. Liying Wang 0011, Qing Li 0028, Shangguang Wang, Xuanzhe Liu, Chenren Xu

Elastic On-Device LLM ServiceabstractOn-device Large Language Models (LLMs) are transforming mobile AI, catalyzing applications like UI automation without privacy concerns. Nowadays the common practice is to deploy a single yet powerful LLM as a general task solver for multiple requests. We identify a key system challenge in this paradigm: current LLMs lack the elasticity to serve requests that have diversified Service-Level Objectives (SLOs) on inference latency. To tackle this, we present ElastiLM, an on-device LLM service that elasticizes both the model and the prompt dimension of a full LLM. It incorporates (1) a one-shot neuron-reordering method, which leverages the intrinsic permutation consistency in transformer models to generate high-quality elasticized sub-models with minimal runtime switching overhead; (2) a dual-head tiny language model, which efficiently and effectively refines the prompt and orchestrates the elastification between model and prompt. We implement such an elastic on-device LLM service on multiple COTS smartphones, and evaluate ElastiLM on both standalone NLP/mobile-agent datasets and end-to-end synthesized traces. On diverse SLOs, ElastiLM outperforms 7 strong baselines in (absolute) accuracy by up to 14.83% and 10.45% on average, with <1% TTFT switching overhead, on-par memory consumption and <100 offline GPU hours. | 2025 | ProvAudit: Enhance High-Level Privacy Inference Through System Provenance DataabstractCompanies such as CrowdStrike now offer cloud-based services for provenance analysis, which collects low-level system events from a customer's device and compiles them onto a centralized platform to detect APT attacks. Despite the effectiveness of such solutions, their privacy implications remain unclear. To assess the privacy implications of system provenance analysis, we employ the Website Fingerprinting (WF) of The Onion Router (Tor) browsers as the real-world attack scenario. In contrast to conventional, network traffic-based WF techniques, we have designed ProvAudit, a fully automated solution that audits the web browsing history of Tor browsers based on system provenance data. We conduct the first systematic case study to demonstrate the feasibility of inferring the websites visited by Tor browsers solely based on the collected system provenance data, particularly system call traces. The evaluation results show that our approach achieves a precision of 0.74 in the open-world scenario, higher than the state-of-the-art robust WF technique. In practice, ProvAudit consumes approximately 23 MB of memory and 4% CPU to audit system provenance data. Our approach is more robust against simple adversarial methods, more accurate, and less expensive than existing solutions. Overall, our case study reveals that provenance data is susceptible to privacy breaches, potentially exposing more high-level information than anticipated. | 2025 | From Earth to Orbit: Launch Sequence Optimization for LEO Mega-ConstellationsabstractThe recent emergence of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) mega-constellations, designed for high-speed broadband connections with low latency, has introduced new deployment challenges. Efficient launch sequence planning is crucial for rapid service rollout, performance enhancement, and service promotion. However, existing research predominantly focuses on the design and performance analysis of fully-deployed constellations and overlooks the evolving process from a partially-deployed constellation to a fully-deployed one. This paper explores the launch sequence optimization problem for mega-constellations, tailored to expedite service delivery and adapt to changing performance demands. To this end, (1) we identify critical network performance metrics for the constellation evolving process and construct a simulation toolchain capable of simulating and evaluating these metrics for any potential partially-deployed constellation. (2) Drawing upon three key observations on network availability, the number of visible satellites, and latency, we propose an algorithm that can construct a launch sequence for an arbitrary mega-constellation topology. Evaluation results show that this algorithm enables the early provision of services and maximizes network performance gains at each launch batch while catering to different user demands. For instance, our algorithm can achieve network performance nearly equivalent to that of Starlink when it initiated its service, without losing redundancy, while using 55% fewer satellites. | 2025 | Efficient and Adaptive Diffusion Model Inference Through Lookup Table on Mobile DevicesabstractDiffusion models have revolutionized image synthesis applications. Many studies focus on using approximate computation such as model quantization to reduce inference costs on mobile devices. However, due to their extensive model parameters and autoregressive inference fashion, the overhead of diffusion models remains high, which is challenging for mobile devices to handle. To reduce the inference overhead of diffusion models on mobile devices, we proposeLUT-Diff, an algorithm-system co-design specifically tailored for mobile device diffusion model inference optimization.LUT-Diffoptimizes using lookup tables and can efficiently generate a series of lookup table candidates for diffusion models without end-to-end training. During inference,LUT-Diffadaptively selects the best inference strategy based on the application/user's latency budget. Additionally,LUT-Diffincludes a parallel inference engine that rapidly completes model inference through CPU-GPU co-scheduling. Extensive experiments demonstrate thatLUT-Diffcan generate images comparable to the original model, with an up to 0.012 MSE in generated images.LUT-Diffcan also achieve up to 9.1× inference acceleration and reduce the inference memory footprint by up to 70.9% compared to baseline methods. Moreover,LUT-Diffcan save at least 3281× the learning cost of lookup tables. Qipeng Wang 0001, Shiqi Jiang 0002, Yifan Yang 0004, Ruiqi Liu 0001, Yuanchun Li 0003, Ting Cao 0003, Xuanzhe Liu

EdgeLLM: Fast On-Device LLM Inference With Speculative DecodingabstractGenerative tasks, such as text generation and question answering, are essential for mobile applications. Given their inherent privacy sensitivity, executing them on devices is demanded. Nowadays, the execution of these generative tasks heavily relies on the Large Language Models (LLMs). However, the scarce device memory severely hinders the scalability of these models. We presentEdgeLLM, an efficient on-device LLM inference system for models whose sizes exceed the device's memory capacity.EdgeLLMis built atop speculative decoding, which delegates most tokens to a smaller, memory-resident (draft) LLM.EdgeLLMintegrates three novel techniques: (1) Instead of generating a fixed width and depth token tree,EdgeLLMproposes compute-efficient branch navigation and verification to pace the progress of different branches according to their accepted probability to prevent the wasteful allocation of computing resources to the wrong branch and to verify them all at once efficiently. (2) It uses a self-adaptive fallback strategy that promptly initiates the verification process when the smaller LLM generates an incorrect token. (3) To not block the generation,EdgeLLMproposes speculatively generating tokens during large LLM verification with the compute-IO pipeline. Through extensive experiments,EdgeLLMexhibits impressive token generation speed which is up to 9.3× faster than existing engines. | 2025 | SatCooper: Enhancing Cooperative Inference Analytics for Satellite Service via Multi-Exit DNNsabstractAs a key technology of intelligent satellite-enabled services in B5G or 6G networks, deploying Deep Neural Networks (DNN) models on satellites has been a notable trend, catering to the daily demand for extensive computing-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks. The computing resources are strategically deployed on satellites where sensor data is generated or collected, facilitating the fine-grained computational inference of DNN-based tasks. However, no prior study has comprehensively explored the crucial inference challenges – e.g., the trade-off between the number of tasks completed and accuracy and partitioning models in multi-exit models – in the resource-constrained space environment. Effective scheduling frameworks cater to various streams of inference tasks are scarce because inference performance may deviate from the ideal situation due to changes in task system status, such as task profiles and network state. To this end, we first formulate a gain-aware in-orbit computing inference problem to strike a proper trade-off between inference latency and the number of tasks completed by dynamically selecting optimal early exit points and model partitioning points. We propose an offline dynamic programming-based algorithm that provides an effective solution when comprehensive system details are to be predicted. We have developed an online learning-based method to schedule inference tasks with uncertain and dynamic system statuses in real-world situations. Our evaluation shows that, compared to baseline methods, the online learning-based algorithm can improve task gain by an average of 87.3% across various tasks. | 2025 | Efficient Fault Tolerance for Stateful Serverless Computing with Asymmetric LoggingabstractServerless computing separates function execution from state management. Simple retry-based fault tolerance might corrupt the shared state with duplicate updates. Existing solutions employ log-based fault tolerance to achieve exactly-once semantics, where every single read or write to the external state is associated with a log for deterministic replay. However, logging is not a free lunch, which introduces considerable overhead to stateful serverless applications. We present Halfmoon, a serverless runtime system for fault-tolerant stateful serverless computing. Our key insight is that it is unnecessary to symmetrically log both reads and writes. Instead, it suffices to log either reads or writes, i.e., asymmetrically. We design two logging protocols that enforce exactly-once semantics while providing log-free reads and writes, which are suitable for read- and write-intensive workloads, respectively. We theoretically prove that the two protocols are log-optimal , i.e., no other protocols can achieve lower logging overhead than our protocols. We provide a criterion for choosing the right protocol for a given workload, and a pauseless switching mechanism to switch protocols for dynamic workloads. We implement a prototype of Halfmoon. Experiments show that Halfmoon achieves 20%–40% lower latency and 1.5–4.0× lower logging overhead than the state-of-the-art solution Boki. Haoyu Feng, Xuanzhe Liu, Xin Jin 0008

FaaSPR: Latency-Oriented Placement and Routing Optimization for Serverless Workflow ProcessingabstractWorkflow processing enhances the applicability of serverless computing while retaining the characteristics of fine-grained resource management and elastic scalability. However, current serverless platforms lack targeted optimization of placement and routing strategies for workflow processing, leading to high overheads due to inter-server data transmission, instance cold starts, and function request queuing. We propose FaaSPR, a serverless scheduling system that exploits placement and routing optimizations to minimize workflow processing latency. FaaSPR groups instances with potential data transmission and proportionally distributes groups with heterogeneous instances across multiple servers, taking into account resource constraints and historical placement traces. This method addresses the issues of poor scalability and frequent instance migrations in existing solutions. Utilizing a routing algorithm based on multi-stage linear programming, FaaSPR minimizes cross-server data transmission within and between instance groups while ensuring load balancing among instances. Experiments show that, compared to the state-of-the-art solution FaaSFlow, FaaSPR decreases the average and 99th percentile tail latency by up to 68.03% and 93.46%, respectively. Additionally, reducing workflow processing latency leads to up to 46.18% decrease in resource consumption for FaaS users. Yunshan Jia, Chao Jin 0007, Qing Li 0028, Xuanzhe Liu, Xin Jin 0008

Bias behind the Wheel: Fairness Testing of Autonomous Driving SystemsabstractThis article conducts fairness testing of automated pedestrian detection, a crucial but under-explored issue in autonomous driving systems. We evaluate eight state-of-the-art deep learning-based pedestrian detectors across demographic groups on large-scale real-world datasets. To enable thorough fairness testing, we provide extensive annotations for the datasets, resulting in 8,311 images with 16,070 gender labels, 20,115 age labels, and 3,513 skin tone labels. Our findings reveal significant fairness issues, particularly related to age. The proportion of undetected children is 20.14% higher compared to adults. Furthermore, we explore how various driving scenarios affect the fairness of pedestrian detectors. We find that pedestrian detectors demonstrate significant gender biases during night time, potentially exacerbating the prevalent societal issue of female safety concerns during nighttime out. Moreover, we observe that pedestrian detectors can demonstrate both enhanced fairness and superior performance under specific driving conditions, which challenges the fairness-performance tradeoff theory widely acknowledged in the fairness literature. We publicly release the code, data, and results to support future research on fairness in autonomous driving. Zhenpeng Chen 0001, Jie Zhang 0050, Federica Sarro, Ying Zhang 0012, Xuanzhe Liu

Anatomizing Deep Learning Inference in Web BrowsersabstractWeb applications have increasingly adopted Deep Learning (DL) through in-browser inference , wherein DL inference performs directly within Web browsers. The actual performance of in-browser inference and its impacts on the Quality of Experience ( QoE ) remain unexplored, and urgently require new QoE measurements beyond traditional ones, e.g., mainly focusing on page load time. To bridge this gap, we make the first comprehensive performance measurement of in-browser inference to date. Our approach proposes new metrics to measure in-browser inference: responsiveness, smoothness, and inference accuracy. Our extensive analysis involves 9 representative DL models across Web browsers of 50 popular PC devices and 20 mobile devices. The results reveal that in-browser inference exhibits a substantial latency gap, averaging 16.9 times slower on CPU and 4.9 times slower on GPU compared to native inference on PC devices. The gap on mobile CPU and mobile GPU is 15.8 times and 7.8 times, respectively. Furthermore, we identify contributing factors to such latency gap, including underutilized hardware instruction sets, inherent overhead in the runtime environment, resource contention within the browser, and inefficiencies in software libraries and GPU abstractions. Additionally, in-browser inference imposes significant memory demands, at times exceeding 334.6 times the size of the DL models themselves, partly attributable to suboptimal memory management. We also observe that in-browser inference leads to a significant 67.2% increase in the time it takes for GUI components to render within Web browsers, significantly affecting the overall user QoE of Web applications reliant on this technology. | 2025 | SCOPE: Performance Testing for Serverless ComputingabstractServerless computing is a popular cloud computing paradigm that has found widespread adoption across various online workloads. It allows software engineers to develop cloud applications as a set of functions (called serverless functions ). However, accurately measuring the performance (i.e., end-to-end response latency) of serverless functions is challenging due to the highly dynamic nature of the environment in which they run. To tackle this problem, a potential solution is to apply checks of performance testing techniques to determine how many repetitions of a given serverless function across a range of inputs are needed to cater to the performance fluctuation. However, the available literature lacks performance testing approaches designed explicitly for serverless computing. In this article, we propose the first serverless computing-oriented performance testing (SCOPE) approach. SCOPE takes into account the unique performance characteristics of serverless functions, such as their short execution durations and on-demand triggering. As such, SCOPE is designed as a fine-grained analysis approach. SCOPE incorporates the accuracy check and the consistency check to obtain the accurate and reliable performance of serverless functions. The evaluation shows that SCOPE provides testing results with 97.25% accuracy, 33.83 percentage points higher than the best currently available technique. Moreover, the superiority of SCOPE over the state-of-the-art holds on all functions that we study. | 2025 | GreenFlow: A Carbon-Efficient Scheduler for Deep Learning WorkloadsabstractDeep learning (DL) has become a key component of modern software. Training DL models leads to huge carbon emissions. In data centers, it is important to reduce carbon emissions while completing DL training jobs early. In this article, we propose GreenFlow, a GPU cluster scheduler that reduces the average Job Completion Time (JCT) under a carbon emission budget. We first present performance models for DL training jobs to predict the throughput and energy consumption performance under different configurations. Based on the performance models and the carbon intensity of the grid, GreenFlow dynamically allocates GPUs, and adjusts the GPU-level and job-level configurations of DL training jobs. GreenFlow applies network packing and buddy allocation to job placement, thus avoiding extra carbon incurred by resource fragmentations. Evaluations on a real testbed show that when emitting the same amount of carbon, GreenFlow can improve the average JCT by up to 2.15×, compared to competitive baselines. | 2025 | Cannikin: No Lagger of SLO in Concurrent Multiple LoRA LLM ServingabstractLow-rank adaptation (LoRA) is widely used to efficiently fine-tune large language models (LLMs), leading to multiple models fine-tuned from the same pre-trained LLM. State-of-the-art LLM serving systems colocate these LoRA models on the same GPU instances for concurrent serving, which decreases memory usage and boosts efficiency. However, the unawareness of the SLO requirements of each LoRA service and the interference between requests from different LoRA services can cause significant SLO violations. This paper presents Cannikin, a multi-LoRA inference serving system that optimizes the minimum of the SLO attainments of all LoRA services in the serving system, denoted as lagger-SLO attainment. We obtain insights from the characterization of a real-world multi-LoRA serving trace, which reveals the stable input/output lengths of the most popular LoRA services. This motivates Cannikin to propose an SLO-aware scheduling algorithm that prioritizes requests based on efficient deadline estimation. Cannikin further detects the influence of interference between different LoRA services on SLO violations and eliminates the bias between these services. The evaluation using real-world traces demonstrates that compared to the state-of-the-art multi-LoRA serving systems, Cannikin can handle up to 3.6× higher rates or 2.8× more burstiness while maintaining the SLO attainment of each LoRA service$> $90% . | 2025 | Niagara+: Scheduling Live ML Analytics Across Heterogeneous Device Processors and Edge ServersabstractIntelligent applications rely significantly on the live machine learning pipeline, a couple of deep neural network (DNN) inference services, executed on mobile devices to meet functional requirements while ensuring user data privacy. However, executing these DNN services on resource-constrained mobile devices presents a considerable challenge: low throughput and high energy consumption of inference tasks. To address this issue, we proposeNiagara+, a novel system designed to enhance throughput by jointly scheduling DNN inference services across heterogeneous processors on mobile devices and offloading services to powerful edge servers. To achieve this,Niagara+encounters two critical challenges: unpredictable workload dynamics and high scheduling complexity. To effectively tackle these challenges,Niagara+employs a predictive model to forecast incoming workload patterns and orchestrates service allocation across device heterogeneous processors and edge servers through a combination of two-step offline scheduling optimization and online service dispatching strategies. We implementedNiagara+and conducted comprehensive experiments, demonstrating its superiority over state-of-the-art approaches, reducing DNN service latency by up to 2.6× under high-bandwidth networks and 9.1× under low-bandwidth networks, while consistently meeting stringent inference latency requirements. | 2024 | MAGIS: Memory Optimization via Coordinated Graph Transformation and Scheduling for DNNabstractRecently, memory consumption of Deep Neural Network (DNN) rapidly increases, mainly due to long lifetimes and large shapes of tensors. Graph scheduling has emerged as an effective memory optimization technique, which determines the optimal execution, re-computation, swap-out, and swap-in timings for each operator/tensor. However, it often hurts performance significantly and can only manipulate tensors' lifetimes but not shapes, limiting the optimization space. We find that graph transformation, which can change the tensor shapes and graph structure, creates a new trade-off space between memory and performance. Nevertheless, graph transformation are applied separately so far, with primary focus on optimizing performance and not memory. | 2024 | EVMBT: A Binary Translation Scheme for Upgrading EVM Smart Contracts to WASMabstractEthereum is the first and largest blockchain that supports smart contracts. To enhance scalability and security, one major planned change of Ethereum 2.0 (Eth2) is to upgrade the smart contract interpreter from Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) to WebAssembly (WASM). In the meanwhile, many other popular blockchains have adopted WASM. Since Ethereum hosts millions of smart contracts, it is highly desirable to automatically migrate EVM smart contracts to WASM code to foster the prosperity of the blockchain ecosystem, while inheriting the historical transactions from Ethereum. Unfortunately, it is non-trivial to achieve this purpose due to the challenges in converting the EVM bytecode of smart contracts to WASM bytecode and adapting the generated WASM bytecode to the underlying blockchain environment. In particular, none of the existing tools are adequate for this task because they fail to achieve accurate translation and compatibility with the blockchain environment. In this paper, we propose a novel solution and use Eth2 as the target blockchain to demonstrate its feasibility and performance because Eth2 is highly attractive to both industry and academia. Specifically, we develop EVMBT, a novel EVM2WASM bytecode translation framework that not only ensures the fidelity of translation but also supports plugins to improve smart contracts. Extensive experiments demonstrate that EVMBT can successfully translate real-world smart contracts with high fidelity and low gas overhead. Xiapu Luo, Haoyu Wang 0001, Heming Cui, Xuanzhe Liu

Exploring Real-Time Satellite Computing: From Energy and Thermal PerspectivesabstractSmall satellites (SmallSats) are now widely used in various fields, such as real-time communication and earth observation. These increasingly complex space applications face limited support from conventional radiation-hardened processors onboard. Hence, many SmallSats are designed to utilize high performance commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) computing devices to address this problem but it remains unclear how the unique energy and thermal characteristics of SmallSats impact computing efficiency onboard. This work conducts a systematic and quantitative measurement study of COTS devices’ computing efficiency on two real orbiting SmallSats. The key findings are: 1) inadequate energy management may lead to electricity wastage in sunlit zones and shortages in eclipse zones, impacting onboard computing availability and 2) the weak heat dissipation onboard may compromise COTS computing efficiency by incurring thermal throttling. To address such challenges, we design ProScale, a lightweight application-aware power management and thermal control system to improve computing efficiency under both electrical and thermal energy constraints. | 2024 | LoongServe: Efficiently Serving Long-Context Large Language Models with Elastic Sequence ParallelismabstractThe context window of large language models (LLMs) is rapidly increasing, leading to a huge variance in resource usage between different requests as well as between different phases of the same request. Restricted by static parallelism strategies, existing LLM serving systems cannot efficiently utilize the underlying resources to serve variable-length requests in different phases. To address this problem, we propose a new parallelism paradigm, elastic sequence parallelism (ESP), to elastically adapt to the variance across different requests and phases. Based on ESP, we design and build LoongServe, an LLM serving system that (1) improves computation efficiency by elastically adjusting the degree of parallelism in real-time, (2) improves communication efficiency by reducing key-value cache migration overhead and overlapping partial decoding communication with computation, and (3) improves GPU memory efficiency by reducing key-value cache fragmentation across instances. | 2024 | Towards Energy-efficient Federated Learning via INT8-based Training on Mobile DSPsabstractAI is making the Web an even cooler place, but also introduces serious privacy risks due to the extensive user data collection. Federated learning (FL), as a privacy-preserving machine learning paradigm, enables mobile devices to collaboratively learn a shared prediction model while keeping all training data on devices. However, a key obstacle towards practical cross-device FL training is huge energy consumption, especially for lightweight mobile devices. In this work, we perform the first-of-its-kind analysis of improving FL performance through low-precision training with an energy-friendly Digital Signal Processor (DSP) on mobile devices. We first demonstrate that directly integrating the state-of-the-art INT8 (8-bit integer) training algorithm and classic FL protocols will significantly degrade the model accuracy. Moreover, we observe that there are still unavoidable frequent quantization operations on devices that cause extreme load stress on DSP-enabled INT8 training. To address the above challenges, we present Q-FedUpdate, an FL framework that efficiently preserves model accuracy with ultra-low energy consumption. It maintains a global full-precision model and allows the tiny model updates to be continuously accumulated, instead of being erased by the quantization. Furthermore, it introduces pipelining technology to parallel CPU-based quantization and DSP-enabled training, which reduces the floating-point computation overhead of frequent data quantization. Extensive experiments show that Q-FedUpdate can effectively reduce the on-device energy consumption by 21×, and accelerate the FL convergence by 6.1× with only 2% accuracy loss. | 2024 | Efficient, Scalable, and Sustainable DNN Training on SoC-Clustered Edge ServersabstractIn the realm of industrial edge computing, a novel server architecture known as SoC-Cluster, characterized by its aggregation of numerous mobile systems-on-chips (SoCs), has emerged as a promising solution owing to its enhanced energy efficiency and seamless integration with prevalent mobile applications. Despite its advantages, the utilization of SoC-Cluster servers remains unsatisfactory, primarily attributed to the tidal patterns of user-initiated workloads. To address such inefficiency, we introduceSoCFlow+, a pioneering framework designed to facilitate the co-location of deep learning training tasks on SoC-Cluster servers, thereby optimizing resource utilization.SoCFlow+incorporates three novel techniques tailored to mitigate the inherent limitations of commercial SoC-Cluster servers. First, it employs group-wise parallelism complemented by delayed aggregation, a strategy engineered to enhance the training efficiency and scalability of deep learning models, effectively circumventing network bottlenecks. Second, it integrates a data-parallel mixed-precision training algorithm, optimized to exploit the heterogeneous processing capabilities inherent to mobile SoCs fully. Third,SoCFlow+employs an underclocking-aware workload re-balanacing mechanism to tackle the training performance degradation caused by the thermal control of mobile SoCs. Through rigorous experimental validation,SoCFlow+achieves a convergence speedup ranging from 1.6× to 740× across 32 SoCs, compared to conventional benchmarks. Furthermore, when juxtaposed with commodity GPU servers (e.g., NVIDIA V100) under identical power constraints,SoCFlow+not only exhibits comparable training speed but also achieves a remarkable reduction in energy consumption by a factor of 2.31× to 10.23×, all while preserving convergence accuracy. (2) Heterogeneity negatively impacts popular aggregation algorithms, e.g., the accuracy variance reduction brought byq-FedAvgdrops by 17.5%. (3) Heterogeneity does not worsen the accuracy loss caused by gradient-compression algorithms significantly, but it compromises the convergence time by up to 2.5×. (4) Heterogeneity hinders client-selection algorithms from selecting wanted clients, thus reducing effectiveness. e.g., the accuracy increase brought by the state-of-the-art client-selection algorithm drops by 73.9%. (5) Heterogeneity causes the optimal FL hyper-parameters to drift significantly. More specifically, the heterogeneity-unaware setting favors looser deadline and higher reporting fraction to achieve better training performance. (6) Heterogeneity results in non-trivial failed clients (more than 10%) and leads to participation bias (the top 30% of clients contribute 86% of computations). | 2024 | A Comprehensive Deep Learning Library Benchmark and Optimal Library SelectionabstractDeploying deep learning (DL) on mobile devices has been a notable trend in recent years. To support fast inference of on-device DL, DL libraries play a critical role as algorithms and hardware do. Unfortunately, no prior work ever dives deep into the ecosystem of modern DL libraries and provides quantitative results on their performance. In this paper, we first build a comprehensive benchmark that includes 6 representative DL libraries and 15 diversified DL models. Then we perform extensive experiments on 10 mobile devices, and the results reveal the current landscape of mobile DL libraries. For example, we find that the best-performing DL library is severely fragmented across different models and hardware, and the gap between DL libraries can be rather huge. In fact, the impacts of DL libraries can overwhelm the optimizations from algorithms or hardware, e.g., model quantization and GPU/DSP-based heterogeneous computing. Motivated by the fragmented performance of DL libraries across models and hardware, we propose an effective DL Library selection framework to obtain the optimal library on a new dataset that has been created. We evaluate the DL Library selection algorithm, and the results show that the framework at it can improve the prediction accuracy by about 10% than benchmark approaches on average. | 2024 | DistMind: Efficient Resource Disaggregation for Deep Learning WorkloadsabstractDeep learning (DL) systems suffer from low resource utilization due to 1) monolithic server model that tightly couples compute and memory; and 2) limited sharing between different inference applications, and across inference and training, because of strict service level objectives (SLOs). To address this problem, we present, a disaggregated DL system that enables efficient multiplexing of DL applications with near-optimal resource utilization. decouples compute from host memory, and exposes the abstractions of a GPU pool and a memory pool, each of which can be independently provisioned. The key challenge is to dynamically allocate GPU resources to different applications based on their real-time demands while meeting strict SLOs. We tackle this challenge by exploiting the power of high-speed 100 Gbps networks, and design three-stage pipelining, cache-aware load balancing, and DNN-aware sharding mechanisms based on the characteristics of DL workloads, to achieve millisecond-scale application loading overhead and improve system efficiency. We have implemented a prototype of and integrated it with PyTorch. Experimental results on AWS EC2 show that achieves near 100% resource utilization, and compared with NVIDIA MPS and Ray, improves the throughput by up to 279% and reduces the inference latency by up to 94%. | 2024 | Adonis: Practical and Efficient Control Flow Recovery through OS-level TracesabstractControl flow recovery is critical to promise the software quality, especially for large-scale software in production environment. However, the efficiency of most current control flow recovery techniques is compromised due to their runtime overheads along with deployment and development costs. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel solution, Adonis , which harnesses Operating System (OS) -level traces, such as dynamic library calls and system call traces, to efficiently and safely recover control flows in practice. Adonis operates in two steps: It first identifies the call-sites of trace entries, and then it executes a pairwise symbolic execution to recover valid execution paths. This technique has several advantages. First, Adonis does not require the insertion of any probes into existing applications, thereby minimizing runtime cost . Second, given that OS-level traces are hardware-independent, Adonis can be implemented across various hardware configurations without the need for hardware-specific engineering efforts, thus reducing deployment cost . Third, as Adonis is fully automated and does not depend on manually created logs, it circumvents additional development cost . We conducted an evaluation of Adonis on representative desktop applications and real-world IoT applications. Adonis can faithfully recover the control flow with 86.8% recall and 81.7% precision. Compared to the state-of-the-art log-based approach, Adonis can not only cover all the execution paths recovered but also recover 74.9% of statements that cannot be covered. In addition, the runtime cost of Adonis is 18.3× lower than the instrument-based approach; the analysis time and storage cost (indicative of the deployment cost) of Adonis is 50× smaller and 443× smaller than the hardware-based approach, respectively. To facilitate future replication and extension of this work, we have made the code and data publicly available. Xuanzhe Liu, Chengxu Yang, Ding Li 0001, Shaofei Li, Zhenpeng Chen 0001

Characterizing and Detecting WebAssembly Runtime BugsabstractWebAssembly (abbreviated WASM) has emerged as a promising language of the Web and also been used for a wide spectrum of software applications such as mobile applications and desktop applications. These applications, named WASM applications, commonly run in WASM runtimes. Bugs in WASM runtimes are frequently reported by developers and cause the crash of WASM applications. However, these bugs have not been well studied. To fill in the knowledge gap, we present a systematic study to characterize and detect bugs in WASM runtimes. We first harvest a dataset of 311 real-world bugs from hundreds of related posts on GitHub. Based on the collected high-quality bug reports, we distill 31 bug categories of WASM runtimes and summarize their common fix strategies. Furthermore, we develop a pattern-based bug detection framework to automatically detect bugs in WASM runtimes. We apply the detection framework to seven popular WASM runtimes and successfully uncover 60 bugs that have never been reported previously, among which 13 have been confirmed and 9 have been fixed by runtime developers. | 2024 | Pyxis: Scheduling Mixed Tasks in Disaggregated DatacentersabstractDisaggregating compute from storage is an emerging trend in cloud computing. Effectively utilizing resources in both compute and storage pool is the key to high performance. The state-of-the-art scheduler provides optimal scheduling decisions for workloads with homogeneous tasks. However, cloud applications often generate a mix of tasks with diverse compute and IO characteristics, resulting in sub-optimal performance for existing solutions. We present Pyxis, a system that provides optimal scheduling decisions for mixed workloads in disaggregated datacenters with theoretical guarantees. Pyxis is capable of maximizing overall throughput while meeting latency SLOs. Pyxis decouples the scheduling of different tasks. Our insight is that the optimal solution has an “all-or-nothing” structure that can be captured by a singleturning pointin the spectrum of tasks. Based on task characteristics, the turning point partitions the tasks either all to storage nodes or all to compute nodes (none to storage nodes). We theoretically prove that the optimal solution has such a structure, and design an online algorithm with sub-second convergence. We implement a prototype of Pyxis. Experiments on CloudLab with various synthetic and application workloads show that Pyxis improves the throughput by 3–21× over the state-of-the-art solution. | 2024 | Aquifer: Transparent Microsecond-Scale Scheduling for vRAN WorkloadsabstractVirtual Radio Access Network (vRAN) is an emerging approach offered by cloud providers to accelerate 5G services deployment. Despite significant microsecond-scale traffic variations, vRAN instances are provisioned based on peak load to meet strict latency requirements, leading to significant resource waste. Conceivably, vRAN can share CPUs with other applications to increase CPU utilization. Yet, existing sharing solutions require modifications to vRAN source code, hindering their deployment on public clouds. We present Aquifer, a microsecond-scale scheduler providing transparent CPU sharing for vRAN workloads. Our key observation is a common producer-consumer task execution pattern in mainstream vRAN implementations. We exploit this pattern to reclaim CPU cores from worker threads only at the boundary of processing different tasks. This guarantees run-to-completion task processing, which is critical for vRAN to achieve low latency and stability. Aquifer intercepts system calls invoked by vRAN at the OS layer to achieve transparent load monitoring and core reallocation. Aquifer employs a set of system-level optimizations on thread state detection, signal transmission and core selection, which reduces the scheduling cycle to 2$\mu s$. Experimental results show that Aquifer reclaims up to 88.31% of wasted CPU resources for two mainstream vRAN implementations, FlexRAN and OAI, without any source code modifications. | 2024 | Battery-Aware Energy Optimization for Satellite Edge ComputingabstractSatellite edge computing can incur dramatically increased energy demand onboard, which is met by satellite batteries during eclipses. Excessive energy usage during regular operations accelerates battery wear. Therefore, it is important and timely to optimize the energy consumption onboard to extend satellite batteries life. This paper investigates battery-aware energy optimization for satellite edge computing under energy harvesting dynamics and wireless environment uncertainty. Inspired by the periodical energy harvesting and satellite-ground connection, we develop a pattern-aware online energy scheduling algorithm within an online convex optimization framework. This learning algorithm achieves theoretical guarantees of no regret and gradually zeroing constraint violations. We further exploit inter-satellites collaboration to extend the average battery life in a whole constellation where satellites have different battery capacity degradation. Trace-driven simulations show that our algorithm can significantly extend the battery life by 1.32× and effectively adapt to the energy harvesting dynamics and wireless environment uncertainty. | 2024 | Adoption of Recurrent Innovations: A Large-Scale Case Study on Mobile App UpdatesabstractModern technology innovations feature a successive and even recurrent procedure. Intervals between old and new generations of technology are shrinking, and the Internet and Web services have facilitated the fast adoption of an innovation even before the convergence of its predecessor. While the adoption and diffusion of innovations have been studied for decades, most theories and analyses focus on single and one-time innovations. Meanwhile, limited work has investigated successive innovations while lacking user-level analysis, possibly due to the unavailability of fine-grained adoption behavior data. In this study, we present the first large-scale analysis of the adoption of recurrent innovations in the context of mobile app updates, investigating how millions of users consume various versions of thousands of apps on their mobile devices. Our analysis reveals novel patterns of crowd and individual adoption behaviors, which suggest the need for new categories of adopters to be added on top of the Rogers model of innovation diffusion. We show that standard machine learning models are able to pick up various sources of signals to predict whether users in these different categories will adopt a new version of an app and how soon they will adopt it. | 2023 | ElasticFlow: An Elastic Serverless Training Platform for Distributed Deep LearningabstractThis paper proposes ElasticFlow, an elastic serverless training platform for distributed deep learning. ElasticFlow provides a serverless interface with two distinct features: (i) users specify only the deep neural network (DNN) model and hyperparameters for a job, but not the number of GPUs; (ii) users specify the deadline for a job, but not the amount of time to occupy GPUs. In contrast to existing server-centric platforms, ElasticFlow provides performance guarantees in terms of meeting deadlines while alleviating tedious, low-level, and manual resource management for deep learning developers. The characteristics of distributed training introduce two challenges. First, the training throughput scales non-linearly with the number of GPUs. Second, the scaling efficiency is affected by worker placement. To address these challenges, we propose Minimum Satisfactory Share to capture the resource usage of training jobs to meet deadlines, and ElasticFlow performs admission control based on it. We develop a greedy algorithm that dynamically allocates resources to admitted jobs based on diminishing returns. We apply buddy allocation to worker placement to eliminate the effect of topology. Evaluation results on a cluster of 128 GPUs show that ElasticFlow increases the number of jobs that can meet their deadlines by 1.46–7.65× compared to existing solutions. | 2023 | Disaggregated RAID Storage in Modern DatacentersabstractRAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) has been widely adopted for decades, as it provides enhanced throughput and redundancy beyond what a single disk can offer. Today, enabled by fast datacenter networks, accessing remote block devices with acceptable overhead (i.e. disaggregated storage) becomes a reality (e.g., for serverless applications). Combining RAID with remote storage can provide the same benefits while creating better fault tolerance and flexibility than its monolithic counterparts. The key challenge of disaggregated RAID is to handle extra network traffic generated by RAID, which can consume a vast amount of NIC bandwidth. We present dRAID, a disaggregated RAID system that achieves near-optimal read and write throughput. dRAID exploits peer-to-peer disaggregated data access to reduce bandwidth consumption in both normal and degraded states. It employs non-blocking multi-stage writes to maximize inter-node parallelism, and applies pipelined I/O processing to maximize inter-device parallelism. We introduce bandwidth-aware reconstruction for better load balancing. We show that dRAID provides up to 3× bandwidth improvement. The results on a lightweight object store show that dRAID brings 1.5×-2.35× throughput improvement on various workloads. | 2023 | Klotski: Efficient and Safe Network Migration of Large Production DatacentersabstractThis paper presents the design, implementation, evaluation, and deployment of Meta's production network migration system. We first introduce the network migration problem for large-scale production datacenter networks (DCNs). A network migration task at Meta touches as many as hundreds of switches and tens of thousands of circuits per datacenter (DC), and involves physical deployment work on site that can last months. We describe real-world migration challenges, covering complex and evolving DCN architectures and operational constraints. We mathematically formalize the problem of generating efficient and safe migration plans, and exploit the inherent symmetry and locality of DCN topologies to prune the search space. We design an ordering-agnostic compact topology representation to eliminate redundant satisfiability checking, and apply the A* algorithm with a domain-specific priority function to find the optimal plan. Evaluation results on a range of production migration cases show that Klotski reduces the time to find optimal migration plans by up to 381× compared to prior solutions. We hope by introducing the problem and sharing our deployment experience, this work can provide a useful context for network migration in the real world and inspire future research. | 2023 | Automated Verification of an In-Production DNS Authoritative EngineabstractThis paper presents DNS-V, a verification framework for our in-production DNS authoritative engine, which is the core of our DNS service. The key idea for automated verification in general is based on the layered verification principle. However, we face the challenge that our in-production DNS authoritative engine lacks modularity, more specifically, as can be seen with unclean interfaces and poor data structure encapsulation. This makes the layered verification hard to apply. To address this challenge, we propose a summarization approach that performs full-path symbolic execution to accumulate all path conditions and computation effects, and then represents a module's behavior in an abstract form as a set of input-effect pairs. In addition, for portability to future iterated versions of our DNS authoritative engine, we identify common dependency library modules that remain stable across different versions, and carefully design their abstractions to make them amenable to automated reasoning. Our framework has been successful in identifying and preventing tens of critical bugs in different versions of our DNS authoritative engine from reaching production, with a porting effort of less than one person-week. | 2023 | Exploring the Generalizability of Spatio-Temporal Traffic Prediction: Meta-Modeling and an Analytic FrameworkabstractThe Spatio-Temporal Traffic Prediction (STTP) problem is a classical problem with plenty of prior research efforts that benefit from traditional statistical learning and recent deep learning approaches. While STTP can refer to many real-world problems, most existing studies focus on quite specific applications, such as the prediction of taxi demand, ridesharing order, traffic speed, and so on. This hinders the STTP research as the approaches designed for different applications are hardly comparable, and thus how an application-driven approach can be generalized to other scenarios is unclear. To fill in this gap, this paper makes three efforts: (i) we propose an analytic framework, called STAnalytic, to qualitatively investigate STTP approaches regarding their design considerations on various spatial and temporal factors, aiming to make different application-driven approaches comparable; (ii) we design a spatio-temporal meta-model, called STMeta, which can flexibly integrate generalizable temporal and spatial knowledge identified by STAnalytic, (iii) we build an STTP benchmark platform including ten real-life datasets with five scenarios to quantitatively measure the generalizability of STTP approaches. In particular, we implement STMeta with different deep learning techniques, and STMeta demonstrates better generalizability than state-of-the-art approaches by achieving lower prediction error on average across all the datasets. | 2023 | Rise of Distributed Deep Learning Training in the Big Model Era: From a Software Engineering PerspectiveabstractDeep learning (DL) has become a key component of modern software. In the “ big model ” era, the rich features of DL-based software (i.e., DL software) substantially rely on powerful DL models, e.g., BERT, GPT-3, and the recently emerging GPT-4, which are trained on the powerful cloud with large datasets. Hence, training effective DL models has become a vital stage in the whole software lifecycle. When training deep learning models, especially those big models, developers need to parallelize and distribute the computation and memory resources amongst multiple devices (e.g., a cluster of GPUs) in the training process, which is known as distributed deep learning training , or distributed training for short. However, the unique challenges that developers encounter in distributed training process have not been studied in the software engineering community. Given the increasingly heavy dependence of current DL-based software on distributed training, this paper aims to fill in the knowledge gap and presents the first comprehensive study on developers’ issues in distributed training. To this end, we focus on popular DL frameworks that support distributed training (including TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, and Horovod) and analyze 1,131 real-world developers’ issues about using these frameworks reported on Stack Overflow and GitHub. We construct a fine-grained taxonomy consisting of 30 categories regarding the fault symptoms and summarize common fix patterns for different symptoms. We find that: (1) many distributed-specific faults and non-distributed-specific faults inherently share the same fault symptoms, making it challenging to debug; (2) most of the fault symptoms have frequent fix patterns; (3) about half of the faults are related to system-level configurations. Based on the results, we suggest actionable implications on research avenues that can potentially facilitate the distributed training to develop DL-based software, such as focusing on the frequent and common fix patterns when designing testing or debugging tools, developing efficient testing and debugging techniques for communication configuration along with the synthesis of network configuration analysis, designing new multi-device checkpoint-and-replay techniques to help reproduction, and designing serverless APIs for cloud platforms. | 2023 | FaaSLight: General Application-level Cold-start Latency Optimization for Function-as-a-Service in Serverless ComputingabstractServerless computing is a popular cloud computing paradigm that frees developers from server management. Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) is the most popular implementation of serverless computing, representing applications as event-driven and stateless functions. However, existing studies report that functions of FaaS applications severely suffer from cold-start latency. In this article, we propose an approach, namely, FaaSLight , to accelerating the cold start for FaaS applications through application-level optimization. We first conduct a measurement study to investigate the possible root cause of the cold-start problem of FaaS. The result shows that application code loading latency is a significant overhead. Therefore, loading only indispensable code from FaaS applications can be an adequate solution. Based on this insight, we identify code related to application functionalities by constructing the function-level call graph and separate other code (i.e., optional code) from FaaS applications. The separated optional code can be loaded on demand to avoid the inaccurate identification of indispensable code causing application failure. In particular, a key principle guiding the design of FaaSLight is inherently general, i.e., platform - and language-agnostic . In practice, FaaSLight can be effectively applied to FaaS applications developed in different programming languages (Python and JavaScript), and can be seamlessly deployed on popular serverless platforms such as AWS Lambda and Google Cloud Functions, without having to modify the underlying OSes or hypervisors, nor introducing any additional manual engineering efforts to developers. The evaluation results on real-world FaaS applications show that FaaSLight can significantly reduce the code loading latency (up to 78.95%, 28.78% on average), thereby reducing the cold-start latency. As a result, the total response latency of functions can be decreased by up to 42.05% (19.21% on average). Compared with the state-of-the-art, FaaSLight achieves a 21.25× improvement in reducing the average total response latency. Mandheling fully explores the advantages of DSP in integer-based numerical calculations using four novel techniques: (1) a CPU-DSP co-scheduling scheme to situationally mitigate the overhead from DSP-unfriendly operators; (2) a self-adaptive rescaling algorithm to reduce the overhead of dynamic rescaling in backward propagation; (3) a batch-splitting algorithm to improve DSP cache efficiency; (4) a DSP compute subgraph-reusing mechanism to eliminate the preparation overhead on DSP. We have fully implemented Mandheling and demonstrated its effectiveness through extensive experiments. | 2022 | Melon: breaking the memory wall for resource-efficient on-device machine learningabstractOn-device learning is a promising technique for emerging privacy-preserving machine learning paradigms. However, through quantitative experiments, we find that commodity mobile devices cannot well support state-of-the-art DNN training with a large enough batch size, due to the limited local memory capacity. To fill the gap, we propose Melon, a memory-friendly on-device learning framework that enables the training tasks with large batch size beyond the physical memory capacity. Melon judiciously retrofits existing memory saving techniques to fit into resource-constrained mobile devices, i.e., recomputation and micro-batch. Melon further incorporates novel techniques to deal with the high memory fragmentation and memory adaptation. We implement and evaluate Melon with various typical DNN models on commodity mobile devices. The results show that Melon can achieve up to 4.33× larger batch size under the same memory budget. Given the same batch size, Melon achieves 1.89× on average (up to 4.01×) higher training throughput, and saves up to 49.43% energy compared to competitive alternatives. | 2022 | Meissa: scalable network testing for programmable data planesabstractEnsuring the correctness of programmable data planes is important. Testing offers comprehensive correctness checking, including detecting both code bugs and non-code bugs. However, scalability is a key challenge for testing production-scale data planes to achieve high coverage. This paper presents Meissa, a scalable network testing system for programmable data planes with full path coverage. The core of Meissa is a domain-specific code summary technique that simplifies the control flow graph of a data plane program for scalable testing without sacrificing coverage. Code summary decomposes a data plane program into individual pipelines, and summarizes each pipeline with a succinct representation. We formally prove that Meissa with code summary achieves 100% path coverage. We use both open-source and production-scale data plane programs to evaluate Meissa. The evaluation shows that (i) Meissa is able to test production-scale data plane programs that cannot be supported by state-of-the-art efforts, and (ii) besides P4 code bugs, Meissa is able to not only identify known non-code bugs, but also detect previously-unknown non-code bugs. We also share in this paper several real cases tested by Meissa in a production programmable data plane. | 2022 | Demystifying "removed reviews" in iOS app storeabstractThe app markets enable users to submit feedback for downloaded apps in the form of star ratings and text reviews, which are meant to be helpful and trustworthy for decision making to both developers and other users. App markets have released strict guidelines/policies for user review submissions. However, there has been growing evidence showing the untrustworthy and poor-quality of app reviews, making the app store review environment a shambles. Therefore, review removal is a common practice, and market maintainers have to remove undesired reviews from the market periodically in a reactive manner. Although some reports and news outlets have mentioned removed reviews, our research community still lacks the comprehensive understanding of the landscape of this kind of reviews. To fill the void, in this paper, we present a large-scale and longitudinal study of removed reviews in iOS App Store. We first collaborate with our industry partner to collect over 30 million removed reviews for 33,665 popular apps over the course of a full year in 2020. This comprehensive dataset enables us to characterize the overall landscape of removed reviews. We next investigate the practical reasons leading to the removal of policy-violating reviews, and summarize several interesting reasons, including fake reviews, offensive reviews, etc. More importantly, most of these mis-behaviors can be reflected on reviews’ basic information including the posters, narrative content, and posting time. It motivates us to design an automated approach to flag the policy-violation reviews, and our experiment result on the labelled benchmark can achieve a good performance (F1=97%). We further make an attempt to apply our approach to the large-scale industry setting, and the result suggests the promising industry usage scenario of our approach. Our approach can act as a gatekeeper to pinpoint policy-violation reviews beforehand, which will be quite effective in improving the maintenance process of app reviews in the industrial setting. | 2022 | A Comprehensive Benchmark of Deep Learning Libraries on Mobile DevicesabstractDeploying deep learning (DL) on mobile devices has been a notable trend in recent years. To support fast inference of on-device DL, DL libraries play a critical role as algorithms and hardware do. Unfortunately, no prior work ever dives deep into the ecosystem of modern DL libs and provides quantitative results on their performance. In this paper, we first build a comprehensive benchmark that includes 6 representative DL libs and 15 diversified DL models. We then perform extensive experiments on 10 mobile devices, which help reveal a complete landscape of the current mobile DL libs ecosystem. For example, we find that the best-performing DL lib is severely fragmented across different models and hardware, and the gap between those DL libs can be rather huge. In fact, the impacts of DL libs can overwhelm the optimizations from algorithms or hardware, e.g., model quantization and GPU/DSP-based heterogeneous computing. Finally, atop the observations, we summarize practical implications to different roles in the DL lib ecosystem. | 2022 | Systematic Analysis of Fine-Grained Mobility Prediction With On-Device Contextual DataabstractUser mobility prediction is widely considered by the research community. Many studies have explored various algorithms to predict where a user is likely to visit based on their contexts and trajectories. Most of existing studies focus on specific targets of predictions. While successful cases are often reported, few discussions have been done on what happens if the prediction targets vary: whether coarser locations are easier to be predicted, and whether predicting the immediate next location on the trajectory is easier than predicting the destination. On the other hand, while spatiotemporal tags and content information are commonly used in current prediction tasks, few have utilized the finer grained, on-device user behavioral data, which are supposed to be more informative and indicative of user intentions. In this paper, we conduct a systematic study on the mobility prediction using a large-scale real-world dataset that contains plentiful contextual information. Based on a series of learning models, including a Markov model, two recurrent neural network models, and a multi-modal learning method, we perform extensive experiments to comprehensively investigate the predictability of different types of granularities of targets and the effectiveness of different types of signals. The results provide insightful knowledge on what can be predicted along with how, which sheds light on the real-world mobility prediction from a relatively general perspective. | 2022 | Characterizing Embedded Web Browsing in Mobile AppsabstractModern mobile OSes support to display Web pages in the native apps, which we call embedded Web pages. In this paper, we conduct, to the best of our knowledge, the first measurement study on browsing embedded Web pages on Android. Our study on 22,521 popular Android apps shows that 57.9% and 73.8% of apps embed Web pages on two popular app markets: Google Play and Wandoujia, respectively. To analyze the embedded Web browsing performance at scale, we design and implement EWProfiler, a tool that can automatically search for embedded Web pages inside apps, trigger page loads, and retrieve performance metrics. Based on 445 embedded Web pages obtained by EWProfiler in 99 popular apps from the two app markets, we investigate the characteristics and performance of embedded Web pages, and find that embedded Web pages significantly impede the app user experience. To optimize the performance of embedded Web browsing, we investigate the effectiveness of three techniques, i.e., separating the browser kernel to a different process, loading pages from local storage, and pre-rendering. We believe that our findings could draw attentions to Web developers, browser vendors, app developers, and mobile OS vendors together towards better performance of embedded Web browsing. | 2022 | The Case for FPGA-Based Edge ComputingabstractEdge Computing has emerged as a new computing paradigm dedicated for mobile performance enhancement and energy efficiency purposes. Specifically, it benefits today’s interactive applications on power-constrained devices by offloading compute-intensive tasks to the edge nodes in close proximity. Meanwhile, FPGA is well known for its excellence in accelerating (domain-specific) compute-intensive tasks such as deep learning algorithms in a high performance and energy-efficient manner due to its hardware-customizable nature. In this paper, we make the first attempt to leverage and combine the advantages of these two, and proposed a new network-assisted computing model, namely FPGA-based edge computing. As a case study, we choose three computer vision (CV)-based mobile interactive applications, and implement their back-end computation engines on FPGA. By deploying such application-customized accelerator modules for computation offloading at the network edge, we experimentally demonstrate that this approach can effectively reduce response time for the applications and energy consumption for the entire system in comparison with traditional CPU-based edge/cloud offloading approach. | 2021 | An Empirical Study on Deployment Faults of Deep Learning Based Mobile ApplicationsabstractDeep learning (DL) is moving its step into a growing number of mobile software applications. These software applications, named as DL based mobile applications (abbreviated as mobile DL apps) integrate DL models trained using large-scale data with DL programs. A DL program encodes the structure of a desirable DL model and the process by which the model is trained using training data. Due to the increasing dependency of current mobile apps on DL, software engineering (SE) for mobile DL apps has become important. However, existing efforts in SE research community mainly focus on the development of DL models and extensively analyze faults in DL programs. In contrast, faults related to the deployment of DL models on mobile devices (named as deployment faults of mobile DL apps) have not been well studied. Since mobile DL apps have been used by billions of end users daily for various purposes including for safety-critical scenarios, characterizing their deployment faults is of enormous importance. To fill in the knowledge gap, this paper presents the first comprehensive study to date on the deployment faults of mobile DL apps. We identify 304 real deployment faults from Stack Overflow and GitHub, two commonly used data sources for studying software faults. Based on the identified faults, we construct a fine-granularity taxonomy consisting of 23 categories regarding to fault symptoms and distill common fix strategies for different fault symptoms. Furthermore, we suggest actionable implications and research avenues that can potentially facilitate the deployment of DL models on mobile devices. | 2021 | Software Services Engineering Manifesto - A Cross-Cutting DeclarationabstractAs we have entered the Internet-of-Things (IoT) era, further blessed with rapid advances in several key technological areas including DevOps, AI/ML, 5G/6G/, neurocomputing, to name a few, it is imperative we think big and aim high. This new venture will require professionals in both software engineering and services computing to collaborate with an unprecedented intensity, and jointly develop the new interdisciplinary field hereby named Software Services Engineering (SSE). In SSE, the ever-deepening system dynamics emerging from both environments and humans in varying contexts are imposing steep challenges to both researchers and practitioners. Humans, both developers and the vast number of end users, are embedded ever closer to IoT environments, and are being afforded ample opportunities to continuously inject inputs during system development and after deployment. In fact, humans are increasingly playing the roles of both sensor and actuator. Traditional requirements engineering researchers are being lured more than ever into exploiting the IoT environments where human users are deeply embedded, to gather contextual information that inevitably introduces lots of ambiguity and uncertainty. Provisioning of highly adaptable and scalable microservices would be key to timely meeting ever-changing human desires and ever-evolving system requirements in the nimblest manner. As such, an ultra-agile and field-programmable development methodology and environment will be imperative to achieving such ultrafine grained microservices provisioning. Such ultra-agility and ultrafine granularity requirements imposed to the services industry obligate company executives to expect extreme manageability assurance to become the centroid of system operations and administration. The ultimate goal in pursuit of such a noble dream will be to provide genuinely individualized and trustworthy service, possibly enabled by AI, but it should be both explainable and ethical. Facing such grand challenges, this declaration samples a subset of burning issues in SSE through observations in seven themes, only meant to be starting points for the SSE community to further investigate. Through our declarations we also call for heightened attention to an assorted array of existing, barely emerging or non-existent services computing and software engineering methods for a concerted effort to research and explore. In this study, we perform a first-of-its-kind measurement study on a leading public edge platform that has been densely deployed in China. Based on this measurement, we quantitatively answer two critical yet unexplored questions. First, from end users' perspective, what is the performance of commodity edge platforms compared to cloud, in terms of the end-to-end network delay, throughput, and the application QoE. Second, from the edge service provider's perspective, how are the edge workloads different from cloud, in terms of their VM subscription, monetary cost, and resource usage. Our study quantitatively reveals the status quo of today's public edge platforms, and provides crucial insights towards developing and operating future edge services. | 2021 | An empirical study on challenges of application development in serverless computingabstractServerless computing is an emerging paradigm for cloud computing, gaining traction in a wide range of applications such as video processing and machine learning. This new paradigm allows developers to focus on the development of the logic of serverless computing based applications (abbreviated as serverless-based applications) in the granularity of function, thereby freeing developers from tedious and error-prone infrastructure management. Meanwhile, it also introduces new challenges on the design, implementation, and deployment of serverless-based applications, and current serverless computing platforms are far away from satisfactory. However, to the best of our knowledge, these challenges have not been well studied. To fill this knowledge gap, this paper presents the first comprehensive study on understanding the challenges in developing serverless-based applications from the developers’ perspective. We mine and analyze 22,731 relevant questions from Stack Overflow (a popular Q&A website for developers), and show the increasing popularity trend and the high difficulty level of serverless computing for developers. Through manual inspection of 619 sampled questions, we construct a taxonomy of challenges that developers encounter, and report a series of findings and actionable implications. Stakeholders including application developers, researchers, and cloud providers can leverage these findings and implications to better understand and further explore the serverless computing paradigm. | 2021 | TaintStream: fine-grained taint tracking for big data platforms through dynamic code translationabstractBig data has become valuable property for enterprises and enabled various intelligent applications. Today, it is common to host data in big data platforms (e.g., Spark), where developers can submit scripts to process the original and intermediate data tables. Meanwhile, it is highly desirable to manage the data to comply with various privacy requirements. To enable flexible and automated privacy policy enforcement, we propose TaintStream, a fine-grained taint tracking framework for Spark-like big data platforms. TaintStream works by automatically injecting taint tracking logic into the data processing scripts, and the injected scripts are dynamically translated to maintain a taint tag for each cell during execution. The dynamic translation rules are carefully designed to guarantee non-interference in the original data operation. By defining different semantics of taint tags, TaintStream can enable various data management applications such as access control, data retention, and user data erasure. Our experiments on a self-crafted benchmarksuite show that TaintStream is able to achieve accurate cell-level taint tracking with a precision of 93.0% and less than 15% overhead. We also demonstrate the usefulness of TaintStream through several real-world use cases of privacy policy enforcement. | 2021 | Demystifying Illegal Mobile Gambling AppsabstractMobile gambling app, as a new type of online gambling service emerging in the mobile era, has become one of the most popular and lucrative underground businesses in the mobile app ecosystem. Since its born, mobile gambling app has received strict regulations from both government authorities and app markets. However, to the best of our knowledge, mobile gambling apps have not been investigated by our research community. In this paper, we take the first step to fill the void. Specifically, we first perform a 5-month dataset collection process to harvest illegal gambling apps in China, where mobile gambling apps are outlawed. We have collected 3,366 unique gambling apps with 5,344 different versions. We then characterize the gambling apps from various perspectives including app distribution channels, network infrastructure, malicious behaviors, abused third-party and payment services. Our work has revealed a number of covert distribution channels, the unique characteristics of gambling apps, and the abused fourth-party payment services. At last, we further propose a “guilt-by-association” expansion method to identify new suspicious gambling services, which help us further identify over 140K suspicious gambling domains and over 57K gambling app candidates. Our study demonstrates the urgency for detecting and regulating illegal gambling apps. Yuhao Gao, Haoyu Wang 0001, Li Li 0029, Xiapu Luo, Guoai Xu, Xuanzhe Liu

DeepRec: On-device Deep Learning for Privacy-Preserving Sequential Recommendation in Mobile CommerceabstractSequential recommendation techniques are considered to be a promising way of providing better user experience in mobile commerce by learning sequential interests within user historical interaction behaviors. However, the recently increasing focus on privacy concerns, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), can significantly affect the deployment of state-of-the-art sequential recommendation techniques, because user behavior data are no longer allowed to be arbitrarily used without the user’s explicit permission. To address the issue, this paper proposes DeepRec, an on-device deep learning framework of mining interaction behaviors for sequential recommendation without sending any raw data or intermediate results out of the device, preserving user privacy maximally. DeepRec constructs a global model using data collected before GDPR and fine-tunes a personal model continuously on individual mobile devices using data collected after GDPR. DeepRec employs the model pruning and embedding sparsity techniques to reduce the computation and network overhead, making the model training process practical on computation-constraint mobile devices. Evaluation results show that DeepRec can achieve comparable recommendation accuracy to existing centralized recommendation approaches with small computation overhead and up to 10x reduction in network overhead. | 2021 | A Longitudinal Study of Removed Apps in iOS App StoreabstractTo improve app quality and nip the potential threats in the bud, modern app markets have released strict guidelines along with app vetting process before app publishing. However, there has been growing evidence showing the ineffectiveness of app vetting, making potentially harmful and policy-violation apps sneak into the market from time to time. Therefore, app removal is a common practice, and market maintainers have to remove undesired apps from the market periodically in a reactive manner. Although a number of reports and news media have mentioned removed apps, our research community still lacks the comprehensive understanding of the landscape of this kind of apps. To fill the void, in this paper, we present a large-scale and longitudinal study of removed apps in iOS app store. We first make great efforts to record daily snapshot of iOS app store continuously in a span of 1.5 years. By comparing each two consecutive snapshots, we have collected the information of over 1 million removed apps with their accurate removed date. This comprehensive dataset enables us to characterize the overall landscape of removed apps. We observe that, although most of the removed apps are low-quality apps (e.g., outdated and abandoned), a number of the removed apps are quite popular. We further investigate the practical reasons leading to the removal of such popular apps, and observe several interesting reasons, including ranking fraud, fake description, and content issues, etc. More importantly, most of these mis-behaviors can be reflected on app meta information including app description, app review, and ASO keywords. It motivates us to design an automated approach to flagging the removed apps. Experiment result suggests that, even without accessing to the bytecode of mobile apps, we can identify the removed apps with good performance (F1=83%). Furthermore, we are able to flag the removed apps in advance as long as their inappropriate behaviors appear in their metadata. We believe our approach can work as a whistle blower that pinpoints policy-violation behaviors timely, which will be quite effective in improving the app maintenance process. | 2021 | A first look at blockchain-based decentralized applicationsabstractSummary With the increasing popularity of blockchain technologies in recent years, blockchain‐based decentralized applications (DApps for short in this paper) have been rapidly developed and widely adopted in many areas, being a hot topic in both academia and industry. Despite of the importance of DApps, we still have quite little understanding of DApps along with its ecosystem. To bridge the knowledge gap, this paper presents the first comprehensive empirical study of blockchain‐based DApps to date, based on an extensive dataset of 995 Ethereum DApps and 29,846,075 transaction logs over them. We make a descriptive analysis of the popularity of DApps, summarize the patterns of how DApps use smart contracts to access the underlying blockchain, and explore the worth‐addressing issues of deploying and operating DApps. Based on the findings, we propose some implications for DApp users to select proper DApps, for DApp developers to improve the efficiency of DApps, and for blockchain vendors to enhance the support of DApps. | 2021 | Operating Systems for Resource-adaptive Intelligent Software: Challenges and OpportunitiesabstractThe past decades witnessed the fast and wide deployment of Internet. The Internet has bred the ubiquitous computing environment that is spanning the cloud, edge, mobile devices, and IoT. Software running over such a ubiquitous computing environment environment is eating the world. A recently emerging trend of Internet-based software systems is “ resource adaptive ,” i.e., software systems should be robust and intelligent enough to the changes of heterogeneous resources, both physical and logical, provided by their running environment. To keep pace of such a trend, we argue that some considerations should be taken into account for the future operating system design and implementation. From the structural perspective, rather than the “monolithic OS” that manages the aggregated resources on the single machine, the OS should be dynamically composed over the distributed resources and flexibly adapt to the resource and environment changes. Meanwhile, the OS should leverage advanced machine/deep learning techniques to derive configurations and policies and automatically learn to tune itself and schedule resources. This article envisions our recent thinking of the new OS abstraction, namely, ServiceOS , for future resource-adaptive intelligent software systems. The idea of ServiceOS is inspired by the delivery model of “ Software-as-a-Service ” that is supported by the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). The key principle of ServiceOS is based on resource disaggregation, resource provisioning as a service, and learning-based resource scheduling and allocation. The major goal of this article is not providing an immediately deployable OS. Instead, we aim to summarize the challenges and potentially promising opportunities and try to provide some practical implications for researchers and practitioners. | 2021 | Emoji-powered Sentiment and Emotion Detection from Software Developers' Communication DataabstractSentiment and emotion detection from textual communication records of developers have various application scenarios in software engineering (SE). However, commonly used off-the-shelf sentiment/emotion detection tools cannot obtain reliable results in SE tasks and misunderstanding of technical knowledge is demonstrated to be the main reason. Then researchers start to create labeled SE-related datasets manually and customize SE-specific methods. However, the scarce labeled data can cover only very limited lexicon and expressions. In this article, we employ emojis as an instrument to address this problem. Different from manual labels that are provided by annotators, emojis are self-reported labels provided by the authors themselves to intentionally convey affective states and thus are suitable indications of sentiment and emotion in texts. Since emojis have been widely adopted in online communication, a large amount of emoji-labeled texts can be easily accessed to help tackle the scarcity of the manually labeled data. Specifically, we leverage Tweets and GitHub posts containing emojis to learn representations of SE-related texts through emoji prediction. By predicting emojis containing in each text, texts that tend to surround the same emoji are represented with similar vectors, which transfers the sentiment knowledge contained in emoji usage to the representations of texts. Then we leverage the sentiment-aware representations as well as manually labeled data to learn the final sentiment/emotion classifier via transfer learning. Compared to existing approaches, our approach can achieve significant improvement on representative benchmark datasets, with an average increase of 0.036 and 0.049 in macro-F1 in sentiment and emotion detection, respectively. Further investigations reveal that the large-scale Tweets make a key contribution to the power of our approach. This finding informs future research not to unilaterally pursue the domain-specific resource but try to transform knowledge from the open domain through ubiquitous signals such as emojis. Finally, we present the open challenges of sentiment and emotion detection in SE through a qualitative analysis of texts misclassified by our approach. | 2020 | Emoji-Powered Representation Learning for Cross-Lingual Sentiment Classification (Extended Abstract)abstractSentiment classification typically relies on a large amount of labeled data. In practice, the availability of labels is highly imbalanced among different languages. To tackle this problem, cross-lingual sentiment classification approaches aim to transfer knowledge learned from one language that has abundant labeled examples (i.e., the source language, usually English) to another language with fewer labels (i.e., the target language). The source and the target languages are usually bridged through off-the-shelf machine translation tools. Through such a channel, cross-language sentiment patterns can be successfully learned from English and transferred into the target languages. This approach, however, often fails to capture sentiment knowledge specific to the target language. In this paper, we employ emojis, which are widely available in many languages, as a new channel to learn both the cross-language and the language-specific sentiment patterns. We propose a novel representation learning method that uses emoji prediction as an instrument to learn respective sentiment-aware representations for each language. The learned representations are then integrated to facilitate cross-lingual sentiment classification. Zhenpeng Chen 0001, Sheng Shen 0001, Ziniu Hu, Qiaozhu Mei, Xuanzhe Liu

Renovating road signs for infrastructure-to-vehicle networking: a visible light backscatter communication and networking approachabstractConventional road signs convey very concise and static visual information to human drivers, and bear retroreflective coating for better visibility at night. This paper introduces RetroI2V - a novel infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) communication and networking system that renovates conventional road signs to convey additional and dynamic information to vehicles while keeping intact their original functionality. In particular, RetroI2V exploits the retroreflective coating of road signs and establishes visible light backscattering communication (VLBC), and further coordinates multiple concurrent VLBC sessions among road signs and approaching vehicles. RetroI2V features a suite of novel VLBC designs including late-polarization, complementary optical signaling and polarization-based differential reception which are crucial to avoid flickering and achieve long VLBC range, as well as a decentralized MAC protocol that make practical multiple access in highly mobile and transient I2V settings. Experimental results from our prototyped system show that RetroI2V supports up to 101 m communication range and efficient multiple access at scale. | 2020 | Approximate query service on autonomous IoT camerasabstractElf is a runtime for an energy-constrained camera to continuously summarize video scenes as approximate object counts. Elf's novelty centers on planning the camera's count actions under energy constraint. (1) Elf explores the rich action space spanned by the number of sample image frames and the choice of per-frame object counters; it unifies errors from both sources into one single bounded error. (2) To decide count actions at run time, Elf employs a learning-based planner, jointly optimizing for past and future videos without delaying result materialization. Tested with more than 1,000 hours of videos and under realistic energy constraints, Elf continuously generates object counts within only 11% of the true counts on average. Alongside the counts, Elf presents narrow errors shown to be bounded and up to 3.4X smaller than competitive baselines. | 2020 | MobiPose: real-time multi-person pose estimation on mobile devicesabstractHuman pose estimation is a key technique for many vision-based mobile applications. Yet existing multi-person pose-estimation methods fail to achieve a satisfactory user experience on commodity mobile devices such as smartphones, due to their long model-inference latency. In this paper, we propose MobiPose, a system designed to enable real-time multi-person pose estimation on mobile devices through three novel techniques. First, MobiPose takes a motion-vector-based approach to fast locate the human proposals across consecutive frames by fine-grained tracking of joints of human body, rather than running the expensive human-detection model for every frame. Second, MobiPose designs a mobile-friendly model that uses lightweight multi-stage feature extractions to significantly reduce the latency of pose estimation without compromising the model accuracy. Third, MobiPose leverages the heterogeneous computing resources of both CPU and GPU to execute the pose estimation model for multiple persons in parallel, which further reduces the total latency. We have implemented the MobiPose system on off-the-shelf commercial smartphones and conducted comprehensive experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques. Evaluation results show that MobiPose achieves over 20 frames per second pose estimation with 3 persons per frame, and significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art baseline, with a speedup of up to 4.5X and 2.8X in latency on CPU and GPU, respectively, and an improvement of 5.1% in pose-estimation model accuracy. Furthermore, MobiPose achieves up to 62.5% and 37.9% energy-per-frame saving on average in comparison with the baseline on mobile CPU and GPU, respectively. | 2020 | ARM: Toward Adaptive and Robust Model for Reputation AggregationabstractIn dynamic, open, and service-oriented computing environments, e.g., e-commerce and crowdsourcing, service consumers must choose one of the services or items to complete their tasks. Due to the scale and dynamic characteristics of these environments, service consumers may have little or no experience with the available services. To this end, reputation systems are proposed and have played a crucial role in the success of online service-oriented transactions. In this paper, we study the current reputation systems used in commercial environments. In these rating-based reputation systems, we found they are not only resilient to the changes (time lag) but also vulnerable to unfair ratings. To address the problems in parallel, we propose an adaptive reputation model (ARM). ARM can dynamically adjust its model parameters to adapt the latest changes in a service. To tackle time lag, the proposed model generalizes the fixed sliding window, used in current commercial platforms, into a dynamic sliding window mechanism. Thus, the model can completely mitigate the influence of obsolete ratings. To detect unfair ratings, our model implements a statistical strategy based on hypothesis testing after transforming the ratings in the linear window into residuals. Experiments not only validate the effectiveness of the proposed model but also show that it outperforms the existing reputation system by 45% on average based on five test cases. The results also show that the proposed model can asymptotically converge to the underlying reputation value as ratings begin to accumulate.Note to Practitioners—The reputation models adopted by current commercial platforms, such as Amazon, eBay, and Taobao, not only suffer heavily from unfair rating but also resilient to the changes in services. To address the problems simultaneously, we design and implement a hybrid model that continuously monitors received ratings and aggregates the reputation value in a self-adaptive way. Our model first fits received fair ratings using the Bayesian linear regression approach and captures the distribution of fair ratings; it then filters out unfair ratings leveraging hypothesis testing. Finally, to sensitively respond the dynamic service changes, the dynamic sliding window algorithm in our model shifts the rating collection window into a new one and discards outdated ratings, reputation value is aggregated in the new window to mitigate the influence of obsolete ratings. Extensive experiments are conducted on widely used scenarios to demonstrate the efficiency and the effectiveness of our proposed model. | 2020 | DeepWear: Adaptive Local Offloading for On-Wearable Deep LearningabstractDue to their on-body and ubiquitous nature, wearables can generate a wide range of unique sensor data creating countless opportunities for deep learning tasks. We propose DeepWear, a deep learning (DL) framework for wearable devices to improve the performance and reduce the energy footprint. DeepWear strategically offloads DL tasks from a wearable device to its paired handheld device through local network connectivity such as Bluetooth. Compared to the remote-cloud-based offloading, DeepWear requires no Internet connectivity, consumes less energy, and is robust to privacy breach. DeepWear provides various novel techniques such as context-aware offloading, strategic model partition, and pipelining support to efficiently utilize the processing capacity from nearby paired handhelds. Deployed as a user-space library, DeepWear offers developer-friendly APIs that are as simple as those in traditional DL libraries such as TensorFlow. We have implemented DeepWear on the Android OS and evaluated it on COTS smartphones and smartwatches with real DL models. DeepWear brings up to 5.08× and 23.0× execution speedup, as well as 53.5 and 85.5 percent energy saving compared to wearable-only and handheld-only strategies, respectively. | 2020 | Decentralized Services Computing Paradigm for Blockchain-Based Data Governance: Programmability, Interoperability, and IntelligenceabstractWith the explosion of “big data” in the past decade, exploring and mining the value hidden in the data has already generated a lot of innovative applications, especially the recent advances of AI applications. The data governance, including activities of data creation, sharing, exchange, management, analytics, tracing, and accounting, has drawn a lot of attentions. Services computing establishes the foundation of current data governance, typically in a centralized fashion, e.g., the cloud-based storage services and analytic services. However, the potential values of big data distributed on the Internet are far away from being adequately explored. Considering the infrastructure revolution made by the blockchain, in this position article, we try to rethink a new data governance fashion that is built upon the blockchain-based decentralized services computing paradigm. The core principle is that data owners are able to publish their data as a set of services that can be deployed independently from the application systems where the data were born. Meanwhile, data owners can define service rules/policies where their data should be stored and how the data can be shared, and keep governing the whole lifecycle record of how their data are actually used. Similar to existing services computing paradigm, data users can search, discover, integrate, and analyze the data in a decentralized fashion. With this perspective, we try to discuss some key insights and enumerate several related new technologies and open challenges, in terms of programmability, interoperability, and intelligence. | 2020 | Understanding and Detecting Fragmentation-Induced Compatibility Issues for Android AppsabstractAndroid ecosystem is heavily fragmented. The numerous combinations of different device models and operating system versions make it impossible for Android app developers to exhaustively test their apps, and thus various compatibility issues arise. Unfortunately, little is known on the characteristics of such fragmentation-induced compatibility issues. No mature tools exist to help developers quickly diagnose and fix these issues. To bridge the gap, we conducted an empirical study on 220 real-world compatibility issues collected from five popular open-source Android apps. We further interviewed Android practitioners and conducted an online survey to gain insights from real practices. Via the studies, we characterized compatibility issues, investigated common practices to handle compatibility issues, and disclosed that these issues exhibit common patterns. With these findings, we propose a technique, FicFinder, to automatically detect compatibility issues in Android apps. FicFinder performs static code analysis based on a model that captures Android APIs as well as their associated context by which compatibility issues can be triggered. FicFinder reports actionable debugging information to developers when it detects potential issues. We evaluated FicFinder with 53 large-scale open-source Android apps. The results show that FicFinder can precisely detect compatibility issues in these apps and uncover previously-unknown issues. | 2020 | Roaming Through the Castle Tunnels: An Empirical Analysis of Inter-app Navigation of Android AppsabstractSmartphone applications (a.k.a., apps) have become indispensable in our everyday life and work. In practice, accomplishing a task on smartphones may require the user to navigate among various apps. Unlike Web pages that are inherently interconnected through hyperlinks, apps are usually isolated building blocks, and the lack of direct links between apps has compromised the efficiency of task completion and user experience. In this article, we present the first in-depth empirical study of page-level access behaviors of smartphone users based on a comprehensive dataset collected through an extensive user study. We propose a model to distinguish informational pages and transitional pages , based on which we can extract page-level inter-app navigation. Surprisingly, the transitional pages account for quite substantial time cost and manual actions when navigating from the current informational page to the desirable informational page. We reveal that developing “ tunnels ” between “isolated” apps under specific usage scenarios has a huge potential to reduce the cost of navigation. Our analysis provides some practical implications on how to improve app-navigation experience from both the operating system’s perspective and the developer’s<?brk?> perspective. | 2019 | Software-Defined Infrastructure for Decentralized Data Lifecycle Governance: Principled Design and Open ChallengesabstractExploring and mining the explosive burst of "big data" has already generated a lot of innovative applications, especially the recent advances of AI applications, and thus produced big values to the human society and civilization. However, due to the centralized patterns of data governance activities, including creation, sharing, exchange, management, analytics, tracing, and accounting, the potential values of big data distributed on the Internet are far away from being adequately explored. The recent announcement of data protection policies/laws such as GDPR makes the problem even more challenging. We are now at a moment of truth where the data governance infrastructure should be reconsidered and redesigned. In this paper, we propose a software-defined infrastructure design in a decentralized fashion: data owners are able to implement and deploy their own rules to the application systems where the data are produced for further governance activities. Such a fashion is quite similar to the popular software-defined networking where users are allowed to deploy rules of switches and customize the use. Our principled infrastructure design can radically reform the current data governance activities into a decentralized topology. On the one hand, data can be separated from the application that generates the data, and data owners can have the full rights to decide where their data should be stored and how the data can be shared. On the other hand, data users can search, discover, integrate, and analyze the data from various data sources according to their application requirements and scenarios. As a result, we argue that our infrastructure can establish a new generation of responsive decentralized data governance that can promote the innovation of linking data to better adapt the open environment and diverse user requirements. With this perspective, we briefly discuss some key insights and enumerate several related new technologies and open challenges. | 2019 | A First Look at Instant Service Consumption with Quick Apps on Mobile DevicesabstractMobile app ecosystem has gained giant success in providing services on mobile devices to facilitate almost all aspects in our daily life. However, the whole-package installation and dramatically increasing package size are now preventing users from trying more apps. To address the issue, many lightweight frameworks have emerged, enabling to provide the experience of instant service consumption where apps are of small size and no installation is needed to consuming services provided by the apps. In this paper, we conduct the first empirical study on instant service consumption on mobile devices. We focus on one of the most popular frameworks, quick apps, which are proposed and supported by nine mainstream mobile phone manufacturers in China. Quick apps are implemented with Web-based technologies, and run as native apps without the need of installation. We find that quick apps have much smaller size and only provide a limited set of services compared to their corresponding native apps. Then, we characterize the performance differences between quick apps and native apps in terms of launching time, data drain, and network connections, when the two kinds of apps provide the same services. Our observations reveal that quick apps perform better than native apps thanks to its much smaller size and less functionalities in a single page. Finally, we propose a machine learning based approach to helping developers construct the quick app from an existing native app. Yi Liu 0014, Enze Xu, Yun Ma 0002, Xuanzhe Liu

PIFA: An Intelligent Phase Identification and Frequency Adjustment Framework for Time-Sensitive Mobile ComputingabstractDue to the limited battery capacity of mobile devices, various CPU power governors and dynamic frequency adjustment schemes have been proposed to reduce CPU energy consumption. However, most such schemes are app-oblivious, ignoring an important fact that real-world applications often exhibit multiple execution phases that perform different functionality and may request different amounts of hardware resources. Having a unified app-level frequency setting for different phases of an application may not be energy efficient enough and may even violate the desirable latency performance required by certain phases. Motivated by this observation, in this paper, we present PIFA, which is an intelligent Phase Identification and Frequency Adjustment framework for energy-efficient and time-sensitive mobile computing. PIFA addresses two major challenges of fully automatically identifying different execution phases of an application and efficiently integrating the phase identification results for runtime frequency adjustment. We have fully implemented PIFA on the Android platform. An extensive set of experiments using real-world Android applications from multiple app categories demonstrate that PIFA achieves closely better performance than the desired latency requirement specified for each phase, while dramatically reducing energy consumption (e.g., >30% energy reduction for most apps) and incurring rather small runtime overhead (e.g., <;5% overhead for most apps). | 2019 | SEntiMoji: an emoji-powered learning approach for sentiment analysis in software engineeringabstractSentiment analysis has various application scenarios in software engineering (SE), such as detecting developers' emotions in commit messages and identifying their opinions on Q&A forums. However, commonly used out-of-the-box sentiment analysis tools cannot obtain reliable results on SE tasks and the misunderstanding of technical jargon is demonstrated to be the main reason. Then, researchers have to utilize labeled SE-related texts to customize sentiment analysis for SE tasks via a variety of algorithms. However, the scarce labeled data can cover only very limited expressions and thus cannot guarantee the analysis quality. To address such a problem, we turn to the easily available emoji usage data for help. More specifically, we employ emotional emojis as noisy labels of sentiments and propose a representation learning approach that uses both Tweets and GitHub posts containing emojis to learn sentiment-aware representations for SE-related texts. These emoji-labeled posts can not only supply the technical jargon, but also incorporate more general sentiment patterns shared across domains. They as well as labeled data are used to learn the final sentiment classifier. Compared to the existing sentiment analysis methods used in SE, the proposed approach can achieve significant improvement on representative benchmark datasets. By further contrast experiments, we find that the Tweets make a key contribution to the power of our approach. This finding informs future research not to unilaterally pursue the domain-specific resource, but try to transform knowledge from the open domain through ubiquitous signals such as emojis. | 2019 | Emoji-Powered Representation Learning for Cross-Lingual Sentiment ClassificationabstractSentiment classification typically relies on a large amount of labeled data. In practice, the availability of labels is highly imbalanced among different languages, e.g., more English texts are labeled than texts in any other languages, which creates a considerable inequality in the quality of related information services received by users speaking different languages. This approach, however, often fails to capture sentiment knowledge specific to the target language, and thus compromises the accuracy of the downstream classification task. The proposed method demonstrates state-of-the-art performance on benchmark datasets, which is sustained even when sentiment labels are scarce. | 2019 | Moving Deep Learning into Web Browser: How Far Can We Go?abstractRecently, several JavaScript-based deep learning frameworks have emerged, making it possible to perform deep learning tasks directly in browsers. However, little is known on what and how well we can do with these frameworks for deep learning in browsers. To bridge the knowledge gap, in this paper, we conduct the first empirical study of deep learning in browsers. We survey 7 most popular JavaScript-based deep learning frameworks, investigating to what extent deep learning tasks have been supported in browsers so far. Then we measure the performance of different frameworks when running different deep learning tasks. Finally, we dig out the performance gap between deep learning in browsers and on native platforms by comparing the performance of TensorFlow.js and TensorFlow in Python. | 2019 | A First Look at Deep Learning Apps on SmartphonesabstractTo bridge the knowledge gap between research and practice, we present the first empirical study on 16,500 the most popular Android apps, demystifying how smartphone apps exploit deep learning in the wild. To this end, we build a new static tool that dissects apps and analyzes their deep learning functions. Our study has strong implications for app developers, smartphone vendors, and deep learning R&D. On one hand, our findings paint a promising picture of deep learning for smartphones, showing the prosperity of mobile deep learning frameworks as well as the prosperity of apps building their cores atop deep learning. | 2019 | Programming Situational Mobile Web Applications with Cloud-Mobile Convergence: An Internetware-Oriented ApproachabstractMobile Web applications (a.k.a., Web apps) stand for an important trend for next-generation Internet-based software. Currently popular mobile Web apps need to be adapted to various and ever-changing contexts and personalized user requirements. | 2019 | MUIT: A Domain-Specific Language and its Middleware for Adaptive Mobile Web-Based User Interfaces in WS-BPELabstractIn enterprise organizations, the Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) requirement has become prevalent as employees use their own mobile devices to process the workflow-oriented tasks. Consequently, it calls for approaches that can quickly develop and integrate mobile user interactions into existing business processes, and adapt to various contexts. However, designing, developing, and deploying adaptive and mobile-oriented user interfaces for existing process engines are non-trivial, and require significant systematic efforts. To address this issue, we present a novel middleware-based approach, called MUIT, to developing and deploying the Mobility, User Interactions and Tasks into WS-BPEL engines. MUIT provides a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) that provides some intuitive facilities to support the declarative development of adaptive, mobile-oriented, and Web-based user interfaces in WS-BPEL. The DSL can significantly reduce developers' manual efforts of developing user interactions by preventing arbitrarily mixed code, and its runtime supports satisfactory user experiences. Additionally, MUIT can be seamlessly integrated into WS-BPEL without intrusions of existing process instances. We implement a proof-of-concept prototype by integrating MUIT into the commodity WS-BPEL-based Apusic Platform, and evaluate the performance and usability of MUIT platform. | 2018 | Rethinking Resource Management in Mobile Web: Measurement, Deployment, and RuntimeabstractAfter its birth since early 1990s, the Web has been the major factor that drives the success of the Internet. In the past decade, the access to the Web has undergone a tremendous evolution from PC to mobile devices, i.e., via smartphones, tablet computers, and wearable devices. It is a key challenge to make the future mobile Web more "user friendly", i.e., smooth interactions, fast page load time, reasonable data traffic volume, efficient energy drain, etc. Due to the device diversity and dynamic network connections, a better client-side resource management is quite critical. This paper presents a new perspective of measuring the resource management in a proactive fashion, and identifies various insights that have not been covered by existing efforts. | 2018 | DeepCache: Principled Cache for Mobile Deep VisionabstractWe present DeepCache, a principled cache design for deep learning inference in continuous mobile vision. DeepCache benefits model execution efficiency by exploiting temporal locality in input video streams. It addresses a key challenge raised by mobile vision: the cache must operate under video scene variation, while trading off among cacheability, overhead, and loss in model accuracy. At the input of a model, DeepCache discovers video temporal locality by exploiting the video's internal structure, for which it borrows proven heuristics from video compression; into the model, DeepCache propagates regions of reusable results by exploiting the model's internal structure. Notably, DeepCache eschews applying video heuristics to model internals which are not pixels but high-dimensional, difficult-to-interpret data. Our implementation of DeepCache works with unmodified deep learning models, requires zero developer's manual effort, and is therefore immediately deployable on off-the-shelf mobile devices. Our experiments show that DeepCache saves inference execution time by 18% on average and up to 47%. DeepCache reduces system energy consumption by 20% on average. | 2018 | Listening to Chaotic Whispers: A Deep Learning Framework for News-oriented Stock Trend PredictionabstractStock trend prediction plays a critical role in seeking maximized profit from the stock investment. However, precise trend prediction is very difficult since the highly volatile and non-stationary nature of the stock market. Exploding information on the Internet together with the advancing development of natural language processing and text mining techniques have enabled investors to unveil market trends and volatility from online content. Unfortunately, the quality, trustworthiness, and comprehensiveness of online content related to stock market vary drastically, and a large portion consists of the low-quality news, comments, or even rumors. To address this challenge, we imitate the learning process of human beings facing such chaotic online news, driven by three principles: sequential content dependency, diverse influence, and effective and efficient learning. In this paper, to capture the first two principles, we designed a Hybrid Attention Networks(HAN) to predict the stock trend based on the sequence of recent related news. Moreover, we apply the self-paced learning mechanism to imitate the third principle. Extensive experiments on real-world stock market data demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework. A further simulation illustrates that a straightforward trading strategy based on our proposed framework can significantly increase the annualized return. | 2018 | Through a Gender Lens: Learning Usage Patterns of Emojis from Large-Scale Android UsersabstractBased on a large data set of emoji using behavior collected from smartphone users over the world, this paper investigates gender-specific usage of emojis. We present various interesting findings that evidence a considerable difference in emoji usage by female and male users. Such a difference is significant not just in a statistical sense; it is sufficient for a machine learning algorithm to accurately infer the gender of a user purely based on the emojis used in their messages. In real world scenarios where gender inference is a necessity, models based on emojis have unique advantages over existing models that are based on textual or contextual information. | 2018 | Aladdin: Automating Release of Deep-Link APIs on AndroidabstractCompared to the Web where each web page has a global URL for external access, a specific 'page' inside a mobile app cannot be easily accessed unless the user performs several steps from the landing page of this app. Recently, the concept of 'deep link' is expected to be a promising solution and has been advocated by major service providers to enable targeting and opening a specific page of an app externally with an accessible uniform resource identifier. In this paper, we present a large-scale empirical study to investigate how deep links are really adopted, over 25,000 Android apps. To our surprise, we find that deep links have quite low coverage, e.g., more than 70% and 90% of the apps do not have deep links on app stores Wandoujia and Google Play, respectively. One underlying reason is the mandatory and non-trivial manual efforts of app developers to provide APIs for deep links. We then propose the Aladdin approach along with its supporting tool to help developers practically automate the release of deep-link APIs to access locations inside their apps. Aladdin includes a novel cooperative framework by synthesizing the static analysis and the dynamic analysis while minimally engaging developers» inputs and configurations, without requiring any coding efforts or additional deployment efforts. | 2018 | A Tale of Two Fashions: An Empirical Study on the Performance of Native Apps and Web Apps on Androidabstractprevalent smartphones have become the major entrance to accessing services on the Internet. On smartphones, users can have two options as the clients, i.e., native apps and Web apps. There have been several debates about native apps and Web apps. However, major service providers such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook provide both native apps and Web apps to end-users. Essentially, the performance differences between these two types of apps haven't been addressed. Indeed, the performance differences make non-trivial impacts on apps development, deployment, and distribution. In this article, we conduct a measurement study on the performance of native apps and Web apps on Android smartphones. Specifically, we want to explore given the same functionalities, do Web apps always perform poorly compared to native apps. We select 328 services from some popular providers, covering various domains such as e-commerce, map, social networking, and entertainment. With HTTP-level trace analysis, we demystify the workflows on how native apps and Web apps deliver services on mobile devices, respectively. Then, we characterize the performance differences between native apps and Web apps with the metrics including the number of requests, response time, data drain, and energy consumption. We find that the performance of Web apps is better than native apps in more than 31 percent cases. Our derived knowledge can suggest some recommendations to improve the performance for mobile apps. | 2017 | Holiday syndrome: A measurement study of mobile social network use during holidaysabstractBusinesses are interested in marketing over the mobile social network (MSN) during holiday seasons to expand their holiday sales. Understanding the “holiday syndrome” - how people behave during holidays - over the MSN is important to create a successful marketing campaign that delights customers. In this paper, we conduct an empirical measurement study of WeChat Moments (the most popular social network of the mobile messaging app WeChat in China) during the holiday season of Chinese Spring Festival (with 137 million users involved and 329 thousand applications crawled), and present a comprehensive view of the MSN's impact on the social ties among users, user interests, as well as users' migration patterns before, during, and after the holiday. Our research findings suggest that the MSN is predominantly used during holiday seasons for holiday-atmosphere building and experience sharing. It is revealed that there exist strong correlations between the timing and popular topics, and between holiday migration and regional distribution. Our results hold the promise of helping businesses to promote their marketing information dissemination to targeted groups of customers, at the right region, with appealing words, during the holiday season. | 2017 | Towards Release Strategy Optimization for Apps in Google PlayabstractIn the appstore-centric ecosystem, app developers have an urgent requirement to optimize their release strategy to maximize user adoption of their apps. To address this problem, we introduce an approach to assisting developers to select the proper release opportunity based on the purpose of the update and current condition of the app. Before that, we propose the update interval to characterize release patterns of apps, and find significance of the updates through empirical analysis. We mined the release-history data of 17,820 apps from 33 categories in Google Play, over a period of 105 days. With 41,028 releases identified from these apps, we reveal important characteristics of update intervals and how these factors can influence update effects. We suggest developers to synthetically consider app ranking, rating trend, and update purpose in addition to the timing of releasing an app version. | 2017 | AgileRabbit: A Feedback-Driven Offloading Middleware for Smartwatch AppsabstractWith the rapid development of wearable devices such as smartwatches, we are brought to a new era of wearable computing. Due to limited computational capability, storage, and battery capacity, wearable devices can hardly execute computation-intensive tasks. The mainstream approach to overcoming these limitations is computation offloading, i.e., offloading the tasks to mobile devices or the remote cloud servers. However, computation offloading cannot improve performance or save power consumption under all conditions. For example, offloading may not be worth in the case of very poor network conditions. To address the issue, in this paper, we propose AgileRabbit, a feedback-driven middleware of computation offloading for smartwatch apps. We design an offloading decision algorithm using the feedback data with a given objective i.e., minimizing the task completion time, or minimizing the total power consumption of smartwatches and mobile devices. With the assistance of AgileRabbit, computation-intensive tasks in smartwatch apps can be well scheduled and assigned to the proper computation node. We implement a speech recognition application on Android Wear platform and deploy it on AgileRabbit to validate the effectiveness of our approach. Evaluation results show that AgileRabbit can significantly improve the performance and save power consumption while incurring small overheads. | 2017 | Enabling accurate and efficient modeling-based CPU power estimation for smartphonesabstractCPU is one of the most significant sources of power consumption on smartphones. Power modeling is a key technique and important tool for power estimation and management, both of which are critical for providing good QoS for smartphones. However, we find that existing CPU power models for smartphones are ill-suited for modern multicore CPUs: they can give high estimation errors (up to 34%) and high estimation accuracy variation (more than 30%) for different types of workloads on mainstream multicore smartphones. The cause is that the existing approaches do not appropriately consider the effects of CPU idle power states on smartphones CPU power modeling. Based on our extensive measurement experiments, we develop a new CPU power modeling approach that carefully considers the effects of CPU idle power states. We present the detailed design of our power modeling approach, and a prototype CPU power estimation system on commercial multicore smartphones. | 2017 | AppHolmes: Detecting and Characterizing App Collusion among Third-Party Android MarketsabstractBackground activities on smartphones are essential to today's "always-on" mobile device experience. Yet, there lacks a clear understanding of the cooperative behaviors among background activities as well as a quantification of the consequences. In this paper, we present the first in-depth study of app collusion, in which one app surreptitiously launches others in the background without user's awareness. To enable the study, we develop AppHolmes, a static analysis tool for detecting app collusion by examining the app binaries. By analyzing 10,000 apps from top third-party app markets, we found that i) covert, cooperative behaviors in background app launch are surprisingly pervasive, ii) most collusion is caused by shared services, libraries, or common interest among apps, and iii) collusion has serious impact on performance, efficiency, and security. Overall, our work presents a strong implication on future mobile system design. Mengwei Xu 0001, Yun Ma 0002, Xuanzhe Liu, Felix Xiaozhu Lin, Yunxin Liu 0001

ShuffleDog: Characterizing and Adapting User-Perceived Latency of Android AppsabstractNumerous complains have been made by Android users who severely suffer from the sluggish response when interacting with their devices. However, very few studies have been conducted to understand the user-perceived latency or mitigate the UI-lagging problem. In this paper, we conduct the first systematic measurement study to quantify the user-perceived latency using typical interaction-intensive Android apps in running with and without background workloads. We reveal the insufficiency of Android system in ensuring the performance of foreground apps and therefore design a new system to address the insufficiency accordingly. We develop a lightweight tracker to accurately identify all delay-critical threads that contribute to the slow response of user interactions. We then build a resource manager that can efficiently schedule various system resources including CPU, I/O, and GPU, for optimizing the performance of these threads. We implement the proposed system on commercial smartphones and conduct comprehensive experiments to evaluate our implementation. Evaluation results show that our system is able to significantly reduce the user-perceived latency of foreground apps in running with aggressive background workloads, up to 10x, while incurring negligible system overhead of less than 3.1 percent CPU and 7 MB memory. | 2017 | ReWAP: Reducing Redundant Transfers for Mobile Web Browsing via App-Specific Resource PackagingabstractRedundant transfer of resources is a critical issue for compromising the performance of mobile Web applications (a.k.a., apps) in terms of data traffic, load time, and even energy consumption. Evidence demonstrates that the current cache mechanisms are far from satisfactory. With lessons learned from how native apps manage their resources, in this article, we present the ReWAP approach to fundamentally reducing redundant transfers by restructuring the resource loading of mobile Web apps. ReWAP is based on an efficient resource-packaging mechanism where stable resources are encapsulated and maintained into a package, and such a package shall be loaded always from the local storage and updated by explicitly refreshing. By retrieving and analyzing the update of resources, ReWAP maintains resource packages that can accurately identify which resources can be loaded from the local storage for a considerably long period. ReWAP also provides a wrapper for mobile Web apps to enable loading and updating resource packages in the local storage as well as loading resources from resource packages. ReWAP can be easily and seamlessly deployed into existing mobile Web architectures with minimal modifications, and is transparent to end-users. We evaluate ReWAP based on continuous 15day access traces of 50 mobile Web apps randomly chosen from Alexa top 500 ranking list. Compared to the original mobile Web apps with cache enabled, ReWAP can significantly reduce the data traffic, with the median saving up to 51 percent. In addition, ReWAP can incur only very minor runtime overhead of the client-side browsers and thus does not compromise user experiences. | 2017 | SWAROVsky: Optimizing Resource Loading for Mobile Web BrowsingabstractImperfect Web resource loading prevents mobile Web browsing from providing satisfactory user experience. In this article, we design and implement the SWAROVsky system to address three main issues of current inefficient Web resource loading: (1) on-demand and thus slow loading of sub-resources of webpages; (2) duplicated loading of resources with different URLs but the same content; and (3) redundant loading of the same resource due to improper cache configurations. SWAROVsky employs a dual-proxy architecture that comprises a remote cloud-side proxy and a local proxy on mobile devices. The remote proxy proactively loads webpages from their original Web servers and maintains a resource loading graph for every single webpage. Based on the graph, the remote proxy is capable of deciding which resources are “really” needed for the webpage and their loading orders, and thus can synchronize these needed resources with the local proxy of a client efficiently and timely. The local proxy also runs an intelligent and light-weight algorithm to identify resources with different URLs but the same content, and thus can avoid duplicated downloading of the same content via network. Our system can be used with existing Web browsers and Web servers, and does not break the normal semantics of a webpage. Evaluations with 50 websites show that on average our system can reduce the page load time by 43.1 percent and the network data transmission by 57.6 percent, while imposing marginal system overhead. | 2017 | Deriving User Preferences of Mobile Apps from Their Management ActivitiesabstractApp marketplaces host millions of mobile apps that are downloaded billions of times. Investigating how people manage mobile apps in their everyday lives creates a unique opportunity to understand the behavior and preferences of mobile device users, infer the quality of apps, and improve user experience. Existing literature provides very limited knowledge about app management activities, due to the lack of app usage data at scale. This article takes the initiative to analyze a very large app management log collected through a leading Android app marketplace. The dataset covers 5 months of detailed downloading, updating, and uninstallation activities, which involve 17 million anonymized users and 1 million apps. We present a surprising finding that the metrics commonly used to rank apps in app stores do not truly reflect the users’ real attitudes. We then identify behavioral patterns from the app management activities that more accurately indicate user preferences of an app even when no explicit rating is available. A systematic statistical analysis is designed to evaluate machine learning models that are trained to predict user preferences using these behavioral patterns, which features an inverse probability weighting method to correct the selection biases in the training process. | 2016 | Learning from the ubiquitous language: an empirical analysis of emoji usage of smartphone usersabstractEmojis have been widely used to simplify emotional expression and enrich user experience. As an interesting practice of ubiquitous computing, emojis are adopted by Internet users from many different countries, on many devices (particularly popular on smartphones), and in many applications. The "ubiquitous" usage of emojis enables us to study and compare user behaviors and preferences across countries and cultures. We present an analysis on how smartphone users use emojis based on a very large data set collected from a popular emoji keyboard. The data set contains a complete month of emoji usage of 3.88 million active users from 212 countries and regions. We demonstrate that the categories and frequencies of emojis used by these users provide rich signals for the identification and the understanding of cultural differences of smartphone users. Users from different countries present significantly different preferences on emojis, which complies with the well-known Hofstede's cultural dimensions model. | 2016 | PRADA: prioritizing android devices for apps by mining large-scale usage dataabstractSelecting and prioritizing major device models are critical for mobile app developers to select testbeds and optimize resources such as marketing and quality-assurance resources. The heavily fragmented distribution of Android devices makes it challenging to select a few major device models out of thousands of models available on the market. Currently app developers usually rely on some reported or estimated general market share of device models. However, these estimates can be quite inaccurate, and more problematically, can be irrelevant to the particular app under consideration. To address this issue, we propose PRADA, the first approach to prioritizing Android device models for individual apps, based on mining large-scale usage data. PRADA adapts the concept of operational profiling (popularly used in software reliability engineering) for mobile apps -- the usage of an app on a specific device model reflects the importance of that device model for the app. PRADA includes a collaborative filtering technique to predict the usage of an app on different device models, even if the app is entirely new (without its actual usage in the market yet), based on the usage data of a large collection of apps. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of PRADA over two popular app categories, i.e., Game and Media, covering over 3.86 million users and 14,000 device models collected through a leading Android management app in China. | 2016 | User-Specific Rating Prediction for Mobile Applications via Weight-Based Matrix FactorizationabstractWith the dramatic growth of mobile application (app) markets, users can find various apps with any functionalities they desire in these markets. However, the huge amounts of apps make it quite a challenge for users to discover good apps efficiently. Previous studies recommend apps by considering all apps equal without capturing the specific interests of each individual user. To address this problem, we propose a model called Weight-based Matrix Factorization (WMF), which can capture user-specific interests and give a more accurate prediction on these apps. WMF views each user as a document and each app as a word, and calculates the weight of each app for target users. The weights are calculated by employing term frequency inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) algorithm, which are then introduced into matrix factorization to predict app ratings. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on a real-world datasets with 5057 users and 4496 apps. The experimental results show that WMF achieves a convincing performance and surpasses other existing prediction models. Jingke Meng, Zibin Zheng, Guanhong Tao 0001, Xuanzhe Liu

Demystifying the Imperfect Client-Side Cache Performance of Mobile Web BrowsingabstractThe web browser is one of the most significant applications on mobile devices such as smartphones. However, the user experience of mobile web browsing is undesirable because of the slow resource loading. To improve the performance of web resource loading, client-side cache has been adopted as a key mechanism. However, the existing passive measurement studies cannot comprehensively characterize the “client-side” cache performance of mobile web browsing. For example, most of these studies mainly focus on client-side implementations but not server-side configurations, suffer from biased user behaviors, and fail to study “miscached” resources. To address these issues, in this article, we present a proactive approach to making a comprehensive measurement study on client-side cache performance. The key idea of our approach is to proactively crawl resources from hundreds of websites periodically with a fine-grained time interval. Thus, we are able to uncover the resource update history and cache configurations at the server side, and analyze the cache performance in various time granularities. Based on our collected data, we build a new cache analysis model and study the upper bound of how high percentage of resources could potentially be cached and how effectively the caching works in practice. We report detailed analysis results of different websites and various types of web resources, and identify the problems caused by unsatisfactory cache performance. In particular, we identify two major problems - Redundant Transfer and Miscached Resource, which lead to unsatisfactory cache performance. We investigate three main root causes: Same Content, Heuristic Expiration, and Conservative Expiration Time, and discuss what mobile web developers can do to mitigate those problems. | 2015 | Carpet: Automating Collaborative Web-Based Process across Multiple Devices by Capture-and-ReplayabstractModern mobile devices like smartphones and tablet computers are equipped with browsers like Apple Safari, Mozilla Fire Fox and Google Chrome. People begin to pay more time on mobile devices than on desktop PCs. Though most popular websites have been optimized for mobile browsing, some web applications, particularly those legacy web-based processes, e.g., Office Automation applications, still keep the same PC-version. Users are possibly influenced by poor browsing experiences and low work efficiency due to limited screen estate and touch-centric interaction pattern. To enable collaborative process on multiple devices, a browser-level and process-oriented capture-and-replay might be an option. However, the changes of web contents and structures, diverse user interaction patterns and performance make cross-device capture-and-replay challenging. This paper presents Carpet, a non-intrusive, low-overhead and intuitive cross-device capture-and-replay system. Unlike previous capture-and-replay efforts that mainly focus on reporting bugs, Carpet is designed for automating web-based processes across multiple devices. Carpet is built atop standard browser kernels without modifying original browsers. Carpet can capture all user interactions and data on a web application, and replay consistently on various devices. We demonstrate Carpet on some typical web applications, including web game, online office, e-commerce, etc. Our initial experiences suggest that Carpet is surprisingly effective in automating the web-based process. | 2015 | Characterizing RESTful Web Services Usage on Smartphones: A Tale of Native Apps and Web AppsabstractThe burst of Web-based Restful services brings us a number of facilities in our life and work. We are used to take smartphones to access these Web services, like location-based services, weather search, mapping, social networking, et al. On smartphones, we have two options of service consumers, a.k.a, Native apps and Web apps. Despite the platform-independence, Web apps are claimed to provide the same features and comparable user experiences with native apps. However, one fact is that more and more people prefer native apps rather than Web apps. In this paper, we make an empirical study on characterizing the performance disparity of native apps and Web apps. Given the same functionalities provided by the same service providers, we explore the Restful Web services that are used by native apps and Web apps. With HTTP-level trace analysis, we demystify the workflows on how native apps and Web apps use Web services and summarize different service usage patterns from architectural style perspective. Then we characterize the performance differences between native apps and Web apps on realizing Restful Web services including GET, DELETE, PUT & POST, in terms of number of network connections, response time, and data drain, given the same functional features. Our observations reveal that Web apps do not always perform worse than native apps using Restful Web services under the same context. We further propose some implications to improve both native apps and Web apps on smartphones. Yi Liu 0014, Xuanzhe Liu, Yun Ma 0002, Yunxin Liu 0001, Zibin Zheng, Gang Huang 0001, M. Brian Blake

Mash Droid: An Approach to Mobile-Oriented Dynamic Services Discovery and Composition by In-App SearchabstractThe popularity of smartphones and tablet computers in recent years makes mobile apps burst. Mobile apps have become the main consumers of the Internet-based services. Compared to traditional applications in the desktop computing era, mobile devices with their apps bring new opportunities and challenges to service computing community, in various aspects like service publication, discovery, interaction, composition, et al. In this paper, we propose a novel data-driven, content-based mobile apps composition approach, called Mash Droid, by leveraging a novel In-App Search mechanism, i.e., Discovering relevant services for the data and content in apps. Rather than existing techniques that usually integrate fixed Web services, our approach relies on the dynamic service discovery and flexible data exchange between several apps. The unique feature of our approach is enabling the data communication channel between apps by the content index services provided by a leading Android appstore, Wandoujia, which now has over 1,000,000 apps and 200 million users. We employ the In-App Search mechanism to define a Restful-style app model and resource-oriented app description model. Based on the models, we design a framework for dynamically discovering relevant apps that could be composed with current app's contexts. We implement a prototype to demonstrate our approach. | 2015 | Characterizing Smartphone Usage Patterns from Millions of Android Usersabstracthe prevalence of smart devices has promoted the popular- ity of mobile applications (a.k.a. apps) in recent years. A number of interesting and important questions remain unan- swered, such as why a user likes/dislikes an app, how an app becomes popular or eventually perishes, how a user selects apps to install and interacts with them, how frequently an app is used and how much traffic it generates, etc. This paper presents an empirical analysis of app usage behaviors collected from millions of users of Wandoujia, a leading An- droid app marketplace in China. The dataset covers two types of user behaviors of using over 0.2 million Android apps, including (1) app management activities (i.e., installa- tion, updating, and uninstallation) of over 0.8 million unique users and (2) app network traffic from over 2 million unique users. We explore multiple aspects of such behavior data and present interesting patterns of app usage. | 2015 | DelayDroid: Reducing Tail-Time Energy by Refactoring Android AppsabstractMobile devices with 3G/4G networking often waste energy in the so-called "tail time" during which the radio is kept on even though no communication is occurring. Prior work has proposed policies to reduce this energy waste by batching network requests. However, this work is challenging to apply in practice due to a lack of mechanisms. In response, we have developed DelayDroid, a framework that allows a developer to add the needed policy to existing, unmodified Android applications (apps) with no human effort. This allows such prior work (as well as our own policies) to be readily deployed and evaluated. The DelayDroid compile-time uses static analysis and bytecode refactoring to identify method calls that send network requests and modify such calls to detour them to the DelayDroid run-time. The run-time then applies a policy to batch them, avoiding the tail time energy waste. DelayDroid also includes a cross-app communication mechanism that supports policies that optimize across multiple apps running together, and we propose a policy that does so. We evaluated the correctness and universality of the DelayDroid mechanisms on 14 popular Android apps chosen from the Google App Store. To evaluate our proposed policy, we studied three DelayDroid-enabled apps (weather forecasting, email client, and news client) running together, finding that the DelayDroid mechanisms combined with our policy can reduce 3G/4G tail time energy waste by 36%. | 2015 | Model-Based Automated Navigation and Composition of Complex Service MashupsabstractService computing promotes a large number of web-delivered services, including web services, APIs and data feeds. Composing data, functionalities and even UI from these web-delivered services into a single web application, usually called service mashup, becomes a popular web development paradigm. The web-delivered services can be modeled as mashup components, while the development of mashup actually yields a set of inter-connected mashup components. The growing popularity of mashup components enriches functionality and user experiences, while the possible connections among components are complex and difficult to mashup developers, who might be non-professional programmers or even end-users, as actions over one component may have potential impacts on another. This paper proposes a novel approach for recommending developers in terms of navigation and completion of mashup components with a large-scale components repository. From data-driven perspective, we model the relationships between mashup components by a generic layered-graph model. Developers are allowed to select some initial components as starting point, while a graph-based algorithm recommends how to navigate to potentially relevant mashup components and complete the relevant mashup application. We experimentally demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach for rapid mashup construction. Gang Huang 0001, Yun Ma 0002, Xuanzhe Liu, Yuchong Luo, M. Brian Blake

Data-Driven Composition for Service-Oriented Situational Web ApplicationsabstractThe convergence of Services Computing and Web 2.0 gains a large space of opportunities to compose “situational” web applications from web-delivered services. However, the large number of services and the complexity of composition constraints make manual composition difficult to application developers, who might be non-professional programmers or even end-users. This paper presents a systematic data-driven approach to assisting situational application development. We first propose a technique to extract useful information from multiple sources to abstract service capabilities with a set tags. This supports intuitive expression of user's desired composition goals by simple queries, without having to know underlying technical details. A planning technique then exploits composition solutions which can constitute the desired goals, even with some potential new interesting composition opportunities. A browser-based tool facilitates visual and iterative refinement of composition solutions, to finally come up with the satisfying outputs. | 2014 | A Graph-Based Approach to Assisting Creation of Mobile Web ApplicationsabstractWeb applications have played an important role in mobile computing since they are developed by standard web technology, easy to achieve portability and always up to date. As a widely adopted development fashion, mashup integrates data, computation and UI elements from multiple web-delivered services into a single web application, which is a promising way to develop applications for mobile devices. However, developing mobile web applications by mashup has faced two challenges: on one hand, the growing popularity of web-delivered services, especially those equipped with mobile features like LBS, increases the difficulty of finding proper services and connections between services to create situational applications, on the other hand, mobile computing yields for agile development and fast iteration to meet users everchanging requirements, imposing more burden on developers. This paper presents a graph-based approach to helping mobile developers create mobile web applications. Based on this graph model, algorithms by synthesizing different recommendation patterns are designed to assist mashup completion, such as finding the missing components, connections between them, or potentially relevant options. | 2014 | Characterizing cache usage for mobile web applicationsabstractWeb application is a key app on mobile devices. However, the performance of mobile Web applications is known to be poor. Resource loading is a key factor influencing Web applications performance. Cache is an effective mechanism to accelerate resource loading by enabling to access resources directly from local storage. In this paper, we make a quantitative study to characterize how mobile Web applications leverage cache to improve its performance. The results show that mobile Web cache is not so efficient. On one hand, redundant transfers are always there to waste data traffic and energy consumption no matter the client support is perfect or not. On the other hand, changed resources are not replaced from cache in time, leading to incorrect functions. Yun Ma 0002, Xuanzhe Liu

How Does Web Service API Evolution Affect Clients?abstractLike traditional local APIs, web service APIs (web APIs for short) evolve, bringing new and improved functionality as well as incompatibilities. Client programs have to be modified according to these changes in order to use the new APIs. Unlike client programs of a local API, which could continue to use the old API, clients of a web API often do not have the option not to upgrade, since the old version of the API may not be provided as a service anymore. Therefore, migrating clients of web APIs is a more critical task. Research has been done in the evolution of local APIs and different approaches have been proposed to support the migration of client applications. However, in practice, we seldom observe that web API providers release automated tools or services to assist the migration of client applications. In this paper, we report an empirical study on web API evolution to address this issue. We analyzed the evolution of five popular web APIs, in total 256 hanged API elements, and carefully compared our results with existing empirical study on API evolution. Our findings are threefold: 1) We summarize the API changes into 16 change patterns, which provide grounded supports for future research, 2) We identify 6 completely new challenges in migrating web API clients, which do not exist in the migration of local API clients, 3) We also identify several unique characteristics in web API evolution. | 2013 | AppMobiCloud: improving mobile web applications by mobile-cloud convergenceabstractBenefitting from advanced web technologies like JavaScript, CSS3 and HTML5, current web applications can provide ever richer functionalities and user experiences, on both PC and mobile devices like tablet computers and smartphones. Furthermore, they can perform complex computations which are usually resource-intensive and consuming, e.g., data analytic application and augmented reality games. Mobile devices might suffer from their limited computing capabilities and resources. As mobile devices now are gaining access through excellent connectivity with much more powerful cloud-side services, and offloading can be a potential solution. This paper presents the design and implementation of the AppMobiCloud system for improving mobile web applications by leveraging the mobile-cloud convergence. At development time, AppMobiCloud employs a combination of profiling and points-to analysis. This facilitates application developers to find the computation-intensive code fragments, and specifies whether they can be offloaded with some constraints. At runtime, AppMobiCloud migrates the chosen JavaScript code fragments from the mobile devices for remote execution. It synchronizes client-side application runtime context and constructs the "cloned" context at server, executing the codes there and re-integrating the result back to the mobile device. We evaluate our approach on three well-known JavaScript benchmarks, Dromaeo, V8 and Kraken, and a typical computation-intensive AI game. The evaluation demonstrates that our work can reduce JavaScript application's execution time and energy consumption respectively on mobile devices up to 98% and 83%. | 2012 | Refactoring android Java code for on-demand computation offloadingabstractComputation offloading is a promising way to improve the performance as well as reducing the battery power consumption of a smartphone application by executing some parts of the application on a remote server. Supporting such capability is not easy for smartphone application developers due to (1) correctness: some code, e.g., that for GPS, gravity, and other sensors, can run only on the smartphone so that developers have to identify which parts of the application cannot be offloaded; (2) effectiveness: the reduced execution time must be greater than the network delay caused by computation offloading so that developers need to calculate which parts are worth offloading; (3) adaptability: smartphone applications often face changes of user requirements and runtime environments so that developers need to implement the adaptation on offloading. More importantly, considering the large number of today's smartphone applications, solutions applicable for legacy applications will be much more valuable. In this paper, we present a tool, named DPartner, that automatically refactors Android applications to be the ones with computation offloading capability. For a given Android application, DPartner first analyzes its bytecode for discovering the parts worth offloading, then rewrites the bytecode to implement a special program structure supporting on-demand offloading, and finally generates two artifacts to be deployed onto an Android phone and the server, respectively. We evaluated DPartner on three real-world Android applications, demonstrating the reduction of execution time by 46%-97% and battery power consumption by 27%-83%. | 2011 | Tuning Adaptive Computations for Performance Improvement of Autonomic Middleware in PaaS CloudabstractIn a cloud platform belonging to the PaaS (Platform as a Service) category, autonomic middleware have become the fundamental part of a cloud node. An autonomic middleware can perform adaptive computations for self-management of the system. However, these adaptive computations consume resources such as CPU and memory, and can interfere with each other and also with normal business functions of the system due to resource competition, especially when the system is under heavy load. As a result, the adaptive computations should be tuned from the perspective of resource management. In this position paper, we propose an approach to tuning the autonomic levels and thus controlling the resource costs of the adaptive computations in an autonomic middleware of PaaS cloud, so as to guarantee the system's performance when resources are competed. | 2011 | Composing Data-Driven Service Mashups with Tag-Based Semantic AnnotationsabstractSpurred by Web 2.0 paradigm, there emerge large numbers of service mashups by composing readily accessible data and services. Mashups usually address solving situational problems and require quick and iterative development lifecyle. In this paper, we propose an approach to composing data driven mashups, based on tag-based semantics. The core principle is deriving semantic annotations from popular tags, and associating them with programmatic inputs and outputs data. Tag-based semantics promise a quick and simple comprehension of data capabilities. Mashup developers including end-users can intuitively search desired services with tags, and combine several services by means of data flows. Our approach takes a planning technique to retrieving the potentially relevant composition opportunities. With our graphical composition user interfaces, developers can iteratively modify, adjust and refine their mashups to be more satisfying. Xuanzhe Liu, Qi Zhao 0005, Gang Huang 0001, Hong Mei 0001

| 2010 | Integrating Resource Consumption and Allocation for Infrastructure Resources on-DemandabstractInfrastructure resources on-demand requires resource provision (e.g., CPU and memory) to be both sufficient and necessary, which is the most important issue and a challenge in Cloud Computing. Platform as a service (PaaS) encapsulates a layer of software that includes middleware, and even development environment, and provides them as a service for building and deploying cloud applications. In PaaS, the issue of on-demand infrastructure resource management becomes more challenging due to the thousands of cloud applications that share and compete for resources simultaneously. The fundamental solution is to integrate and coordinate the resource consumption and allocation management of a cloud application. The difficulties of such a solution in PaaS are essentially how to maximize the resource utilization of an application, and how to allocate resources to guarantee adequate resource provision for the system. In this paper, we propose an approach to managing infrastructure resources in PaaS by leveraging two adaptive control loops: the resource consumption optimization loop and the resource allocation loop. The optimization loop improves the resource utilization of a cloud application via management functions provided by the corresponding middleware layers of PaaS. The allocation loop provides or reclaims appropriate amounts of resources to/from the application system while guaranteeing its performance. The two loops are integrated to run consecutively and repeatedly to provide infrastructure resources on-demand by first trying to improve resource utilization, and then allocating more resources when necessary. We implement a framework, SmartRod, to investigate our approach. The experiment on SmartRod proves its effectiveness on infrastructure resource management. | 2010 | Mashing-Up Rich User Interfaces for Human-Interaction in WS-BPELabstractServices computing paradigm together with Web services have significantly promoted the automation of business process in enterprise. Prevalent service composition technologies, such as WS-BPEL and WSCI, provide promising means to deal with machine-to-machine communication. Traditionally, in the phase of business process modeling, there usually require some human-involved tasks. Recent new technologies such as BPEL4People and Human Task begin to consider involving human interaction in business process. However, such approaches still have some limitations. On one hand, they exactly require some extensions of current BPEL standards. As a result, the existing business processes have to be rewritten and redeployed. On the other hand, they yet lack of the development and deployment supports of flexible and reusable user interfaces in business process. In this paper, we address these issues by enabling human interaction in business process with rich web applications. Our approach models human tasks as services, and can be seamlessly integrated to current BPEL without any modifications to existing engine and processes. We further support building human task presentations from service-oriented rich user interfaces. During the process execution, the corresponding task stakeholders can select, configure and compose these reusable and rich UI components according to their own application context. | 2010 | iMashup: assisting end-user programming for the service-oriented webabstractThe Web is currently moving towards a platform with rich services. A notable trend is that end-users create mashups composing services with short, iterative development life cycles as well as updating with evolving needs. However, the large number of services and the high complexity of composition constraints make manual composition extremely difficult. Addressing this issue, we have developed an approach to assisting the end-users to build mashups in a simple and fast fashion. A tag-based model provides end-users a quick and intuitive insight of services. End-users simply describe their desired goals with tags. Interacting with a service repository, our approach employs a planning approach to suggest services that end-users might want to involve in the final outputs, including some additional interesting or relevant ones to induce more potential composition opportunities. End-users are allowed to iteratively modify, adjust or refine their goals. We have implemented our approach with a tool called iMashup. | 2010 | A Browser-Based Middleware for Service-Oriented Rich ClientabstractAlong with the proliferation of web-delivered services and the wide adoption of popular Web technologies, it has been an emerging development style that composes service-oriented applications with rich user experiences in the web browser. Currently, these service-oriented rich client (SoRC) applications are usually tightly coupled with specific requirements and scenarios, without the solutions of common problems for development, deployment and operation. It leads to the fact that SoRC applications are exactly done in an ad-hoc manner. In this paper, we propose a new type of middleware, which is embedded in web browsers and encapsulates reusable solutions for common problems. This browser-embedded middleware consists of a container managing component instances, a set of communication mechanisms coordinating both browser-server and inter-browser interactions. Different SoRC applications can be constructed more easily based on the middleware. In the case study, we construct a mashup environment, called iMashup, with the middleware and compare it with some popular environments. The comparison shows that iMashup provides composition capabilities with less implementation efforts, occupies much lower memory consumption and achieves more scalability. | 2009 | Discovering Homogeneous Web Service Community in the User-Centric Web EnvironmentabstractThe Web has undergone a tremendous change toward a highly user-centric environment. Millions of users can participate and collaborate for their own interests and benefits. Services Computing paradigm together with the proliferation of Web services have created great potential opportunities for the users, also known as service consumers, to produce value-added services by means of service discovery and composition. In this paper, we propose an efficient approach to facilitating the service consumer on discovering Web services. First, we analyze the service discovery requirements from the service consumer's perspective and outline a conceptual model of homogeneous Web service communities. The homogeneous service community contains two types of discovery: the search of similar operations and that of composible operations. Second, we describe a similarity measurement model for Web services by leveraging the metadata from WSDL, and design a graph-based algorithm to support both of the two discovery types. Finally, adopting the popular atom feeds, we design a prototype to facilitate the consumers to discover while subscribing Web services in an easy-of-use manner. With the experimental evaluation and prototype demonstration, our approach not only alleviates the consumers from time-consuming discovery tasks but also lowers their entry barrier in the user-centric Web environment. | 2008 | A User-Oriented Approach to Automated Service CompositionabstractIn the past a few years, the Web has undergone a tremendous change towards a highly user-centric environment. Millions of users can participate and collaborate for their own interests and benefits. Service oriented computing and Web services have created great potential opportunities for the users to build their own applications. Then, it is a pressing issue that, the users can compose services without too complex tasks and efforts. In this paper, we introduce a user-oriented approach which aims to simplify service composition. We leverage the plentiful information residing in service tags, both from service descriptions (such as WSDL) and the annotations tagged by users. Employing some mining algorithms, a direct acyclic graph is built up to represent potential composition opportunities. With a simple and intuitive search, it allows users to explore the space of potentially composable services and achieve service composition in a heuristic manner. We have developed a composition advisor to provide recommendations guiding and assisting the users. It also lets the users discover and make use of services without having to understand too many details of individual candidate services. To enable the users to accomplish service composition in a more interactive access channel, we finally provide a user-friendly prototype based on Web browsers. It undoubtedly reduces the complexity and lowers the entry barrier for the users, and makes them better play their role in the service-oriented Web environment. | 2007 | Towards End User Service CompositionabstractThe popularity of service oriented computing (SOC) brings a large number of distributed, well-encapsulated and reusable services all over Internet, and makes it possible to create value-added services by means of service composition. Current composition styles are too professional to those end users when building their own applications. Actually, the end user would prefer rapidly discovering the best-of-breed services to assemble as well as visually personalizing the presentation to enjoy rich experiences. We propose an end user service composition approach for reducing the composition complexity and difficulty from the end user perspective. In our approach, similar candidate services are aggregated together as a unified resource, whose wide QoS spectrum can be easily manipulated by the end users to satisfy their requirements. Then they can personalize the services and, the composition occurs only at the presentation layer. The main contributions of the approach are: (i) enabling the end users to personalize the composite application with more powerful presentation; (ii) supporting the end users to dynamically customize the service composition in terms of QoS; (iii) alleviating the end users from the time-consuming task of selecting service to compose.
