| 2024 | A Novel Wireless Power Transfer System for Long-Term and Real-Time Monitoring of Subsurface CO2 StorageabstractThe data and power transfer systems for long term underground CO2 sequestration monitoring are normally based on wire-line cable, which will lead to a potential leakage path way through the casing and cement annulus in high-temperature, high-pressure, and hash underground environments. In this paper, a novel wireless power transfer system has been developed for real-time underground CO2 monitoring. The system includes an array of toroidal transceivers winding around the highly conductive casing string for wireless power transfer to deep subsurface. This design helps to maintain well integrity and reduce potential leakage by eliminating the need to perforate the casing or an umbilical in the cement annulus. The metal casing’s amplification effect significantly enhances the wireless power transfer efficiency, which provides a highly conductive power/electric current’s pathway instead of omnidirectional wireless radiation loss in the subsurface. Toroidal transceiver’s design has been optimized to improve the received signal, and our results show significant improvements in wireless power transfer efficiency. Using the optimized design, we can receive 1 to 10 % power transfer efficiency at 800 meters deep using only one toroidal transceiver with 1A current as input. Compared with other wireless antenna designs, such as the helix coil antenna, our system has shown 26,000 times power transfer efficiency improvement. In the end, a lab-scale power transfer system is built, and our experimental measurements support the simulation results. Chenpei Huang, David R. Jackson, Miao Pan, Jiefu Chen, Xiaonan Shan |

| 2018 | Accelerated Computation of Triaxial Induction Tool Response for Arbitrarily Deviated Wells in Planar-Stratified Transversely Isotropic FormationsabstractIn this letter, a new formulation for calculating an induction logging tool response in a multilayered transversely isotropic (also called uniaxial anisotropic) dipping formation is proposed. Using transmission line theory, only five independent integrals are necessary to form all the components of the dyadic Green's function in order to calculate the tool response, resulting in a more succinct and efficient formulation. The fast Hankel transform (FHT) is then employed to calculate these spectral integrals efficiently. In special cases, such as horizontal and vertical wells where the direct FHT fails, alternative approaches are proposed. A singularity extraction is implemented to handle the divergent integrals for a horizontal well, whereas the double-exponential integration rule is implemented for a vertical well. In order to speed up the computation, the spectral transmission line currents and voltages are precalculated and then stored in memory, and parallel computing using OpenMP is employed. Numerical examples demonstrate a speedup factor of more than two orders of magnitude compared with other reported results based solely on the FHT. Dawei Li 0005, Donald R. Wilton, David R. | 2012 | Leaky-Wave AntennasabstractThis paper gives a basic review and a summary of recent developments for leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). An LWA uses a guiding structure that supports wave propagation along the length of the structure, with the wave radiating or “leaking” continuously along the structure. Such antennas may be uniform, quasi-uniform, or periodic. After reviewing the basic physics and operating principles, a summary of some recent advances for these types of structures is given. Recent advances include structures that can scan to endfire, structures that can scan through broadside, structures that are conformal to surfaces, and structures that incorporate power recycling or include active elements. Some of these novel structures are inspired by recent advances in the metamaterials area. David R. Jackson, Christophe Caloz, Tatsuo Itoh |

| 2011 | The Fundamental Physics of Directive Beaming at Microwave and Optical Frequencies and the Role of Leaky WavesabstractThis review paper summarizes various aspects of directive beaming and explains these aspects in terms of leaky waves. Directive beaming occurs in antenna design where a narrow beam is obtainable by using fairly simple planar structures excited by a single source. These structures include Fabry-Pérot cavity structures as well as metamaterial structures made from artificial low-permittivity media. Directive beaming also occurs in the optical area where it has been observed that highly directive beams can be produced from small apertures in a metal film when an appropriate periodic patterning is placed on the film. One aspect that these phenomena all have in common is that they are due to the excitation of one or more weakly attenuated leaky waves, the radiation from which forms the directive beam. This is established in each case by examining the role of the leaky waves in determining the near-field on the aperture of the structure and the far-field radiation pattern of the structure. David R.
