2025 Providing an energy efficient UAV BS positioning mechanism to improve wireless connectivity
abstract
As wireless communication continues to advance, the move towards Sixth-Generation (6G) networks has heightened the need for faster data speeds and reliable connections, prompting new approaches to connectivity. In scenarios such as natural disasters, where Ground Base Stations (GBSs) may be compromised, the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has become increasingly important. A promising approach is to deploy low-altitude UAVs equipped with compact Base Stations (BSs) to reestablish essential communication networks and offer temporary coverage. However, identifying the optimal locations for these UAV-BSs presents a complex challenge. This paper proposes an innovative solution using UAVs as base stations (UAV-BSs) and introduces a Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) optimization model to position UAV-BSs based on real-time demand and network conditions. Traditional methods struggle with the complexity of UAV-BS deployment, so a novel algorithm combining the JAYA optimization technique is used. Extensive experiments show this approach maximizes network coverage and connectivity while minimizing UAV-BS power consumption , outperforming other methods in placement accuracy, power usage, packet loss , and latency. The algorithm also adapts to varying network conditions, making it a valuable tool for optimizing UAV-BS locations in dynamic environments.

2024 Low Complexity Broadband Array Processing in Dynamic Scenarios with Jamming
abstract
Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) networks require low-latency communications utilizing a broad spectrum while operating under jamming. In this sense, low complexity antenna array-based broadband jamming mitigation schemes are crucial in order to allow low latency communication and low-cost hardware. In this paper we propose low-complexity algorithms for signal recovery in broadband processing scenario applied to V2X. Numerical simulation of a jamming scenario demonstrate the proposed algorithm achieving the same performance in terms of signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) as the state-of-the-art while taking signiflcantly less time to compute.

2024 Broadband Beamforming via Frequency Invariance Transformation and PARAFAC Decomposition for Jamming Mitigation in V2X Scenarios
abstract
Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication can considerably improve the efficiency and safety of autonomous driving and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADASs). However, V2X communication can be considerably degraded in the presence of cyberattacks, such as radio jamming. Traditionally, beamforming techniques can be applied to increase the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR). This paper evaluates broadband beamforming in the mmWave spectrum against radio jamming in V2X communication. The exploitation of the mm Wave spectrum in 5G-V2X communication has a natural advantage against radio jamming. First, attenuation is stronger in the mmWave spectrum in the range of 40 GHz or higher than in the traditional 5.9 GHz. Second, to generate broadband radio jamming, the radio jammer requires much more complex hardware and energy consumption. Third, by using broadband beamforming, broadband radio jamming can be considerably attenuated, limiting the degradation of the spectrum by the radio jamming. According to our numerical results, gains of close to 30 dB SINR can be achieved. We propose a broad-band beamforming technique based on the canonical polyadic decomposition via generalized eigenvalue decomposition (CPD-GEVD). The CPD-GEVD broadband beamforming outperforms state-of-the-art beamforming algorithms in most V2X scenarios presented in this paper.

2023 Multi-Class Text Classification Based in Oversampling for Highly Imbalanced Dataset
abstract
Automated document classification through machine learning is crucial for handling extensive modern datasets, as manual analysis becomes impractical due to time and cost constraints. Real-world datasets often grapple with issues like class imbalance and high dimensionality, challenging classification algorithms. Our multi-class classification approach encompasses pre-processing, data balancing, feature engineering, and dimensionality reduction. We conducted experiments on seven datasets, including benchmarks and private data, leveraging natural language processing (NLP) techniques like lemmatization and stemming for corpus preparation. To mitigate feature dimensionality, we applied principal component analysis (PCA) and employed oversampling to tackle data imbalance. Finally, we utilized multilayer perceptron neural networks (MLP), support vector machines (SVM), and random forest (RF) models for clas-sification. Our framework achieved high accuracy, ranging from 77 % to 99 %, contingent on the dataset, while also demonstrating strong performance across additional metrics like precision, F1-score, and recall.

2023 A Hybrid Reverberation Model and Its Application to Joint Speech Dereverberation and Separation
abstract
This article proposes a hybrid reverberation model by integrating two conventional models, namely, the multichannel linear prediction (MCLP) model and the spatial coherence model. The late reverberation is divided into two components. One component is modeled using an MCLP model, and the other is modeled using the spatial coherence model. In contrast with the conventional models, the proposed hybrid model increases modeling capacity, especially in the case of long reverberation time. In order to optimally estimate model parameters, joint speech dereverberation and separation is taken into account. The hybrid reverberation model is then used in conjunction with the multichannel nonnegative matrix factorization (MNMF). The method called Hybrid-FastMNMF is proposed by treating the reverberation component modeled by the spatial coherence model as a noise source and estimating its parameters similarly to speech sources. Furthermore, prior knowledge of the spatial coherence matrix is employed to whiten the observations, resulting in another method called Hybrid-FastMNMF-W. Experimental findings demonstrate the proposed methods' superior performance in terms of joint speech dereverberation and separation, and they further justify the efficiency of the proposed hybrid reverberation model.

2019 Joint DL and UL Channel Estimation for Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems Using Tensor Modeling
abstract
In this paper, we address the problem of joint downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) channel estimation for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Assuming a closed-loop and multifrequency-based channel training framework in which pilot signals received by multiple antenna mobile stations (MSs) are coded and spread in the frequency domain via multiple adjacent subcarriers, we propose two tensor-based semiblind receivers by capitalizing on the multilinear structure and sparse feature of the received signal at the BS equipped with a hybrid analog-digital beamforming (HB) architecture. As a first processing stage, the joint estimation of the compressed DL and UL channel matrices can be obtained in an iterative way by means of an alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm that capitalizes on a parallel factors model for the received signals. Alternatively, for more restricted scenarios, a closed-form solution is also proposed. From the estimated effective channel matrices, the users’ channel parameters such as angles of departure (AoD), angles of arrival (AoA), and path gains are then estimated in a second processing stage by solving independent compressed sensing (CS) problems (one for each MS). In contrast to the classical approach in the literature, in which the DL and UL channel estimation problems are usually considered as two separate problems, our idea is to jointly estimate both the DL and UL channels as a single problem by concentrating most of the processing burden for channel estimation at the BS side. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed receivers achieve a performance close to the classical approach that is applied on DL and UL communication links separately, with the advantage of avoiding complex computations for channel estimation at the MS side as well as dedicated feedback channels for each MS, which are attractive features for massive MIMO systems.

2019 Low Cost Antenna Array Based Drone Tracking Device for Outdoor Environments
abstract
Applications of direction of arrival (DoA) techniques have dramatically increased in various areas ranging from the traditional wireless communication systems and rescue operations to GNSS systems and drone tracking. Particularly, police forces and security companies have drawn their attention to drone tracking devices, in order to provide the safeness of citizens and of clients, respectively. In this paper, we propose a low cost antenna array based drone tracking device for outdoor environments. The proposed solution is divided into hardware and software parts. The hardware part of the proposed device is based on off-the-shelf components such as an omnidirectional antenna array, a 4-channel software defined radio (SDR) platform with carrier frequency ranging from 70 MHz to 6 GHz, a FPGA motherboard, and a laptop. The software part includes algorithms for calibration, model order selection (MOS), and DoA estimation, including specific preprocessing steps and a tensor-based estimator to increase the DoA accuracy. We evaluate the performance of our proposed low cost solution in outdoor scenarios. According to our measurement campaigns, we show that when the array is in the front fire position, i.e., with a DoA ranging from -60° to 60° , the maximum and the average DoA errors are 6° and 1,9°, respectively.

2018 Extended ADDIE Model for improved Distance Learning Courses
abstract
With the widespread use of electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets, distance learning (DL) courses are increasingly being adopted by educational institutions. In order to conceive and execute such courses, different teaching models can be chosen. In this work, we overview the theoretical foundations related to the techniques of development of courses mediated by technologies from the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (ADDIE) model. We propose the extended ADDIE (X-ADDIE) for the elaboration of DL courses. In the proposed X-ADDIE, besides the execution step, a new step is added, defined as pilot experiment. All the X-ADDIE steps are tracked by a project management tool. We evaluate the proposed X-ADDIE model by means of a qualitative approach.

2018 Robust Nonlinear Array Interpolation for Direction of Arrival Estimation of Highly Correlated Signals
abstract
Important signal processing techniques need that the response of the different elements of a sensor array have specific characteristics. For physical systems this often is not achievable as the array elements’ responses are affected by mutual coupling or other effects. In such cases, it is necessary to apply array interpolation to allow the application of ESPRIT, Forward Backward Averaging (FBA), and Spatial Smoothing (SPS). Array interpolation provides a model or transformation between the true and a desired array response. If the true response of the array becomes more distorted with respect to the desired one or the considered region of the field of view of the array increases, nonlinear approaches become necessary. This work presents two novel methods for sector discretization. An Unscented Transform (UT) based method and a principal component analysis (PCA) based method are discussed. Additionally, two novel nonlinear interpolation methods are developed based on the nonlinear regression schemes Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) and Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNNs). These schemes are extended and applied to the array interpolation problem. The performance of the proposed methods is examined using simulated and measured array responses of a physical system used for research on mutual coupling in antenna arrays.

2017 Bayesian information criterion for multidimensional sinusoidal order selection
abstract
Detecting the sinusoidal order is a prerequisite step for parametric multidimensional sinusoidal frequency estimation methods, whose applications range from radar and wireless communications to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Although the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) has been commonly applied for model order selection, its application to sinusoidal order estimation is recent. By means of estimation of Fisher information matrix, we extend the 1-D BIC to multidimensional case for multidimensional sinusoidal order selection. The multidimensional BIC is shown in simulations to outperform the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of probability of correct detection.

2017 ESPRIT-Hilbert-Based Audio Tampering Detection With SVM Classifier for Forensic Analysis via Electrical Network Frequency
abstract
Audio authentication is a critical task in multimedia forensics demanding robust methods to detect and identify tampered audio recordings. In this paper, a new technique to detect adulterations in audio recordings is proposed by exploiting abnormal variations in the electrical network frequency (ENF) signal eventually embedded in a questioned audio recording. These abnormal variations are caused by abrupt phase discontinuities due to insertions and suppressions of audio snippets during the tampering task. First, we propose an ESPRIT-Hilbert ENF estimator in conjunction with an outlier detector based on the sample kurtosis of the estimated ENF. Next, we use the computed kurtosis as an input for a support vector machine classifier to indicate the presence of tampering. The proposed scheme, herein designated as SPHINS, significantly outperforms related previous tampering detection approaches in the conducted tests. We validate our results using the Carioca 1 corpus with 100 unedited authorized audio recordings of phone calls.

2016 Motivating attendee's participation in distance learning via an automatic messaging plugin for the moodle platform
abstract
Technological advances in information and communications systems are enabling access to education for millions of students, regardless of their geographical location. In this sense, distance learning schools take advantage of technological tools, such as course management systems (CMS) and their plugins. This work proposes a plugin for the e-learning platform Moodle that automatically sends e-mail messages to the students in order to motivate them to take part in the distance learning courses and, consequently, to reduce the dropout rates. This plugin has been tested in courses promoted by the General Coordination of Distance Education (CGEAD) of the Brazilian National School of Public Administration (ENAP). Based on data from its operation within the real ENAP distance learning environment, the proposed plugin is particularly successful to tackle the enrollment locking cases that compose the student dropout rate and also to motivate course enrolled students to access the virtual learning system more frequently.

2015 Unscented Transformation based array interpolation
abstract
It is impossible to enforce exact responses for each sensor involved in an antenna array. Important signal processing techniques such as Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance (ESPRIT), Forward Backward Average (FBA) and Spatial Smoothing (SPS) rely on sensor arrays with Vandermonde or centro-hermitian responses. To achieve such responses array interpolation is often necessary. In this work a novel way of performing array interpolation while minimizing the transformation error using the Unscented Transformation (UT) is presented. The UT provides a different method for mapping interpolated regions and also exhibits a new insight into array interpolation and its current limitations. A set of numerical simulations presents promising results for array interpolation employing the UT.

2014 Sensor Localization via Diversely Polarized Antennas
abstract
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are currently employed in a vast number of different applications ranging from home automation and health care to military systems. Although their application may vary greatly, WSNs share a common set of characteristics such as a limited energy supply and simple hardware. A common issue related with the application of WSNs is sensor localization, for some types of applications it is important that the sensors know the relative or absolute position of other sensors in the network, such as surveillance of monitoring networks. If sensors are randomly placed they may resort a wide range of methods such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) or received signal strength indicators (RSSI). In this work we present an alternative to relative sensor localization by employed a crossed dipole antenna in the reception and a known polarization in the transmission. The accuracy of the proposed methods is measured trough numerical simulations and results are presented.

2014 Fourth-order tensor method for blind spatial signature estimation
abstract
In this paper, we consider a wireless communication scenario where M sources simultaneously transmit towards a base station equipped with an array of K sensors. A new method is proposed to solve the spatial signature estimation problem without resorting to training sequences and without knowledge of sources' covariance structure. By assuming that the sources' amplitudes vary between successive time blocks, a fourth-order tensor decomposition of the multimode spatio-temporal data covariance is proposed, from which an iterative algorithm is formulated to estimate sources' spatial signatures. A distinguishing feature of the proposed tensor method is its efficiency in treating the case where the sources' covariance matrix is non-diagonal and unknown, which generally happens when working with sample data covariances computed from a reduced number of snapshots.

2014 A signal adaptive array interpolation approach with reduced transformation bias for DOA estimation of highly correlated signals
abstract
Sensor arrays with Vandermonde or centro-hermitian responses cannot always be constructed. However, such array response structure can be achieved by means of a mapping which transforms the real array response to an array response with the desired properties by applying array interpolation algorithms. In this work a low-complexity, multi-sector, signal adaptive array interpolation approach that achieves low transformation bias in the presence of highly correlated signals is presented. Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance (ESPRIT) algorithm with Forward Backward Average (FBA) and Spatial Smoothing (SPS) as well as model order estimation is applied after array interpolation in conjunction with the Vandermonde Invariance Transformation (VIT) to obtain precise high resolution estimates in closed form. A set of numerical simulations show that the proposed approach provides precise estimates for arbitrary array responses in highly correlated signal signal environments.

2013 Using MIMO Techniques to Enhance Communication Among Static and Mobile Nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks
abstract
Wireless sensor networks are evolving to hybridnetworks in which static and mobile sensor nodes cooperate in order to address challenging requirements imposed by new emerging applications. However, due to the ad hoc nature of the network and especially to resources constraints of the sensor nodes, this cooperation is not trivial, requiring a number of retransmissions thus wasting precious resources. In this paper the use of cooperative multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques is proposed to overcome transmission problems, ensuring a reliable and more efficient communication link with less retransmissions. Extensive simulation experiments support the proposal, and the results highlight the benefits in using MIMO to deliver messages from static to mobile nodes in wireless sensor networks.

2013 Core consistency diagnostic aided by reconstruction error for accurate enumeration of the number of components in parafac models
abstract
Recently, the CORe CONsistency DIAgnostic (CORCONDIA) has attractedmore and more attention as an effective tool for determining the number of components in parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) or Tucker 3 models. In CORCONDIA, a proper user-defined threshold is required to ensure reliable performance. The optimal threshold increases with the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which results in significant probability of over-enumeration of the number of components for high SNRs under fixed threshold settings. We propose to first use a threshold interval to obtain lower and upper bounds of the estimates. The estimate takes the upper bound as its initial value and is then refined based on a sequence of hypothesis tests by exploiting the reconstruction error of the PARAFAC decomposition. The proposed scheme provides accurate detection for both low and high SNRs at almost no extra computational cost.

2011 Subspace based multi-dimensional model order selection in colored noise scenarios
abstract
Frequently, R-dimensional subspace-based methods are used to estimate the parameters in multidimensional harmonic retrieval problems in a variety of signal processing applications. Since the measured data is multi-dimensional, traditional approaches require stacking the dimensions into one highly structured matrix. Recently, we have proposed eigenvalue based multi-dimensional model order selection schemes, which exploit the multidimensional structure of the data in order to achieve a higher probability of correct detection. However, our proposed multi-dimensional schemes are restricted to white noise scenarios. In this paper, we show how the Higher Order Singular Value Decomposition (HOSVD) of the measurement tensor enables us to improve the model order estimation of the estimation error (ESTER) scheme in colored noise scenarios. By using the matrix based ESTER, only one set of eigenvectors is taken into account, while by using the R-dimensional ESTER we obtain R sets of n-mode eigenvectors of the measurement tensor that are jointly used to improve significantly the accuracy of the estimated model order.

2011 Widely linear SIMO filtering for hypercomplex numbers
abstract
The starting point of any derivation is a suitable representation of the given model. Hypercomplex numbers sometimes provide a more compact representation and more insight into a problem's structure than the reals or the complex numbers. Hence, efficient filters are needed for hypercomplex numbers as well. As there is a large zoo of different hypercomplex numbers obeying different algebras it is cumbersome to do derivations for each of them individually. Hence, our contribution is to show how to abstract the concept of hypercomplex numbers and their algebras. We give an insight into the questions how the algebra works in general. Furthermore, we propose two extensions of the concept of widely linear filters for hypercomplex numbers. The first widely linear filter abstraction presumes several properties of the algebra, but can be computed directly in the respective hypercomplex domain. The second abstract solution of widely linear filters does all calculations in the real domain. The latter imposes much less restrictions on the algebra than the first one which leads to a more generic type of widely linear filters.
