2026 Disentangled Instrumentalization Learning for Dialogue Emotion Detection
abstract
Emotion detection is a pivotal research area spanning diverse fields. Despite advancements in existing methods enhancing detection accuracy and robustness through various research perspectives, the complexity of dialogue content and variability in dialogue conditions introduce significant challenges. These challenges often obscure the relationship between utterances and true emotions, leading to spurious correlations. To address these challenges, we proposeDisentangled Instrumentalization Learning (DIL), a disentangled instrumentalization learning model based on instrumental variables. Leveraging pre-extracted topic information from GPT-4 as an observable confounder, we disentangle it to learn the representation of required conditional instrumental variables. Our approach employs prior and posterior networks for covariate distribution inference, optimized via reconstruction techniques. Additionally, we introduce an instrumentalization learning method for conditional variables to effectively represent instrumental variables for emotion detection. We illustrate the variable relationships in our model using a causal Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves a weighted-average F1-score of 69.0% with 69.4% accuracy on IEMOCAP, and a weighted-average F1-score of 67.6% on MELD, showing consistent improvements over strong baseline methods.

2026 Node Injection-Based Adversarial Attack and Defense on Social Bot Detection
abstract
Social platforms such as Twitter are increasingly threatened by automated social bots, which can manipulate public opinion, spread misinformation, and compromise platform integrity. To detect such accounts, various methods have been proposed, with many recent approaches leveraging graph neural networks (GNNs) due to their ability to model relational structures among users. However, these models may be vulnerable to adversarial perturbations that exploit their structural dependencies. To investigate this vulnerability, we propose a targeted black-box node injection attack that deceives detection models by injecting a new bot near a target bot, causing both to evade detection. This attack is specifically designed to exploit GNN-based model behaviors and does not require any access to model parameters or architecture. Given the success of this attack in exposing structural weaknesses, it is essential to develop effective defenses to improve the robustness of detection models. To this end, we introduce a cost-efficient adversarial training method with reweighted supervision, which selectively emphasizes adversarial samples during learning. This approach improves model robustness without increasing computational cost or requiring additional data. The effectiveness of our attack and defense methods is demonstrated through experiential evaluations conducted on six different models. Specifically, we achieve a maximum attack success rate (ASR) of 95.74% and robustness improvement of 95.74% in Cresci-2015 and achieve a maximum ASR of 97.15% and robustness improvement of 56.20% in TwiBot-22. The detection performance of the models fluctuates less than 2% after adversarial training.

2026 RefreshReg: Receptive Field Reshaping and Multi-Layer Consistency Filtering for Point Cloud Registration
abstract
Point cloud registration is a crucial task in the field of 3D processing research, which aims to align two or more point cloud scans into the same coordinate system. A significant factor limiting the performance of point cloud registration is the low proportion of inlier correspondences between two unaligned point clouds. It is particularly pronounced when the overlap between two scenes is low. Based on this observation, we propose a novel point cloud registration framework that enhances the proportion of correct correspondences via two aspects: extracting richer global geometric information for accurate identification of overlapping regions, and rejecting outliers based on spatial feature consistency. During the feature extraction phase, we first encode local geometry utilizing the Point Pair Features and then propose the Dual Graph Convolution module to reshape the receptive field, thereby expanding perception beyond small local areas. In the transformation estimation phase, we design a filtering module based on a multi-layer decoder. We extract point cloud features at different resolutions and select high-confidence point cloud pairs for registration based on the consistency of correspondences. We test the performance of our method on four datasets (3DMatch, ScanNet, KITTI, and MVP-RG). Compared with state-of-the-art approach NMCT, our method achieves improvements of 6% / 38% on KITTI / MVP-RG. Additionally, our filtering approach enhances the operational speed of RANSAC by more than 300%. Code is available at https://github.com/xiwanghuolight/RefreshReg.

2026 Consensus Labeling: Prompt-Guided Clustering Refinement for Weakly Supervised Text-Based Person Re-Identification
abstract
Weakly supervised text-based person re-identification aims to retrieve specific pedestrians based on textual descriptions without identity labels available during training. This task remains challenging due to the inherent cross-modal heterogeneity and lack of identity annotations. There is a common issue of modality gap in vision language models, which in turn affects the performance of downstream tasks such as cross-modal retrieval and multimodal clustering. Specifically, in our research and experiments, we found that there is a problem of inter-modal misalignment between image and text modalities. However, existing methods rely on mutual enhancement strategies between image and text clustering, leading to the accumulation of clustering noise and affecting the final retrieval performance. To address this issue, we propose a Consensus Labelling: Prompt-guided Clustering refinement (CLPC) framework for weakly supervised text-based person re-identification. Specifically, we introduce a textual inversion network to learn a pseudo token that captures visual context, which is then integrated into natural language sentences as personalized textual prompt. To further improve clustering quality, we introduce a Nearest Neighbor-Guided Pseudo Label Mining (NGPM) method, which uses the clusters derived from personalized textual prompts to refine the clustering of image features. Additionally, we design a Dynamic Margin Triplet (DMT) loss, where the margin is adaptively adjusted using a sigmoid-based function to enhance the model’s ability to distinguish hard negative samples. We have also introduce a Normalized Distribution Matching (NDM) loss to minimize the KL divergence between the image-text matching scores and the normalized soft matching scores. The extensive experimental results on three public datasets have demonstrated the superiority of our method. Our code is available at https://github.com/LeviWeiZhi/CLPC.

2026 Next Chain Prediction: A Generative Recommendation Model With Sequence-Chain Attention
abstract
Sequential recommendation is a classic task in the field of recommendation, which aims to predict the next user-preferred item based on their historical interactions. However, in practical scenarios, users' needs are dynamically evolving in a short period and exhibit a chain-like structure. Consequently, recommending only the next single item does not fully meet user demands and limits the potential for increasing business traffic on platforms. To overcome this limitation, we propose a new recommendation paradigm, Next Chain Prediction, which requires the model to predict a chain of items. Due to the advantages of generative recommendation models on user preference representation and scalability, we design a generative recommendation model for next chain prediction. The generative model extracts long-term interests and short-term demands within a unified framework. By designing a Sequence-Chain Attention mechanism, the model performs self-attention learning across dual dimensions. Additionally, we design a generative loss function to balance the hit rate and diversity of the recommended items in the chain. We conduct experiments across three datasets and the experimental results show that our method achieves at least 1.22% improvement in HR@10 across three datasets for recommending multi-item chains. Furthermore, our method improves the diversity of recommended items and also offers the flexibility to adjust the size of predicted chains, maintaining state-of-the-art performance even when limited to predicting a single item.

2025 When Headlines Meet Minds: Empowering News Recommendations with Social Simulator
abstract
Personalized news recommendation aims to deliver content aligned with user interests. However, most existing methods rely on the objective textual content of news, overlooking the subjective social review that reflects how the news is socially perceived. Inspired by social constructionism, we propose Social Review-aware Recommendation (SRec), a novel framework that integrates both objective content and the social review. The latter is constructed through group deliberation modeled by an agent-based social simulator, providing structured representations of collective understandings toward news. In addition, SRec incorporates a reasoning-guided explanation module that produces interpretable rationales by aligning user preferences with the social review of news. Experimental results on the MIND-small and MIND-large datasets demonstrate that SRec improves AUC by at least 2.45% over competitive baselines. Further analysis confirms the value of the social review generated by the simulator, and shows the flexibility of SRec as a lightweight enhancement to existing recommendation systems.

2025 T2TD: Text-3D Generation Model Based on Prior Knowledge Guidance
abstract
In recent years, 3D models have been utilized in many applications, such as auto-drivers, 3D reconstruction, VR, and AR. However, the scarcity of 3D model data does not meet its practical demands. Thus, generating high-quality 3D models efficiently from textual descriptions is a promising but challenging way to solve this problem. In this paper, inspired by the creative mechanisms of human imagination, which concretely supplement the target model from ambiguous descriptions built upon human experiential knowledge, we propose a novel text-3D generation model (T2TD). T2TD aims to generate the target model based on the textual description with the aid of experiential knowledge. Its target creation process simulates the imaginative mechanisms of human beings. In this process, we first introduce the text-3D knowledge graph to preserve the relationship between 3D models and textual semantic information, which provides related shapes like humans' experiential information. Second, we propose an effective causal inference model to select useful feature information from these related shapes, which can remove the unrelated structure information and only retain solely the feature information strongly related to the textual description. Third, we adopt a novel multi-layer transformer structure to progressively fuse this strongly related structure information and textual information, compensating for the lack of structural information, and enhancing the final performance of the 3D generation model. The final experimental results demonstrate that our approach significantly improves 3D model generation quality and outperforms the SOTA methods on the text2shape datasets.

2025 Dynamic Causal Disentanglement Model for Dialogue Emotion Detection
abstract
Emotion detection is a critical technology extensively employed in diverse fields. While the incorporation of commonsense knowledge has proven beneficial for existing emotion detection methods, dialogue-based emotion detection encounters numerous difficulties and challenges due to human agency and the variability of dialogue content. In dialogues, human emotions tend to accumulate in bursts. However, they are often implicitly expressed. This implies that many genuine emotions remain concealed within a plethora of unrelated words and dialogues. In this paper, we propose a Dynamic Causal Disentanglement Model founded on the separation of hidden variables, which effectively decomposes the content of dialogues and investigates the temporal accumulation of emotions, thereby enabling more precise emotion recognition. First, we introduce a novel Causal Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) to establish the correlation between hidden emotional information and other observed elements. Subsequently, our approach utilizes pre-extracted personal states and utterance topics as guiding factors for the distribution of hidden variables, aiming to separate irrelevant ones. Specifically, we propose a Dynamic Causal Disentanglement Model to infer the propagation of utterances and hidden variables, enabling the accumulation of emotion-related information throughout the conversation. To guide this disentanglement process, we leverage the GPT4.0 and LSTM networks to extract utterance topics and personal states as observed information. Finally, we test our approach on popular datasets in dialogue emotion detection and relevant experimental results verified the model's superiority.

2025 SCDL: Sketch Causal Disentangled Learning for Sketch-Based 3D Shape Retrieval
abstract
Sketch-based 3D shape retrieval (SBSR) has been a challenging task for decades, crucially depending on aligning shared semantic attributes between sketches and 3D shapes. Previous efforts mainly aimed at creating a common embedding space to bridge domain gaps. However, sketches’ subjective and abstract nature, known as confounders, potentially reduces learning performance of matching with 3D shapes. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a sketch causal disentangled learning for SBSR, named SCDL, which introduce causal intervention to explicitly disentangle sketches into the inherent shared semantic part, and other unrelated confounders to classification (styles, abstraction levels, etc.) for the first time. Specifically, we construct a structural causal model (SCM) in the sketch branch under the dual variational autoencoder (VAE) architectures to alleviate confounders negative impact through learning the semantic attributes in the latent variable space. Next, we adopt a learning strategy on the separated semantic latent variables to construct a shared semantic embedding space further to make cross-modal features of the same class more similar, alleviating the cross-modality discrepancies effectively and establishing new state-of-the-art on three benchmarks. Comprehensive experiment results, ablation studies, and visualization validate the effectiveness of our approach.

2025 CompCraft: Foreground-Driven Image Synthesis With Customized Layouts
abstract
Recently, advancements in text-to-image synthesis and image customization have drawn significant attention. Among these technologies, foreground-driven image synthesis models aim to create diverse scenes for specific foregrounds, showing broad application prospects. However, existing foreground-driven diffusion models struggle to accurately generate scenes with layouts that align with user intentions. To address these challenges, we propose CompCraft, a training-free framework that enhances layout control and improves overall generation quality in current models. First, CompCraft identifies that the failure of existing methods to achieve effective control arises from the excessive influence of fully denoised foreground information on the generated scene. To address this, we propose a foreground regularization strategy that modifies the foreground-related attention maps, reducing their impact and ensuring better integration of the foreground with the generated scene. Then, we propose a series of inference-time layout guidance strategies to guide the image generation process with the user’s finely customized layouts. These strategies enable current foreground-driven diffusion models with accurate layout control. Finally, we introduce a comprehensive benchmark to evaluate CompCraft. Both quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate that CompCraft can effectively generate high-quality images with precise customized layouts, showcasing its strong capabilities in pratical image synthesis applications.

2025 Bidirectional Mask Selection for Zero-Shot Referring Image Segmentation
abstract
Zero-shot referring image segmentation (RIS) aims to segment a referent mask via a natural language expression, without any training. Although existing research has made some progress, the lack of a training process in zero-shot learning results in insufficient information, leading to poor zero-shot segmentation performance. We propose a Bidirectional Mask Selection (BMS) framework, which is the first work to incorporate the negative masks into zero-shot RIS. Our idea is based on leveraging the negative masks’ semantic context information around target semantic to enhance the understanding of cross-modal fine-grained correlation. Further, we propose a novel mask adaptive fusion strategy to combine the complementary information from positive and negative masks without additional training. In the experiments, BMS has demonstrated outstanding performance on three prominent RIS datasets, and it has surpassed even the most advanced weakly supervised methods on the RefCOCOg datasets. Code will be available athttps://github.com/pcc-99/BMS.

2025 What and Where: Semantic Grasping and Contextual Scanning for Moment Retrieval and Highlight Detection
abstract
The current surge in video content highlights the tasks of moment retrieval (MR) and highlight detection (HD), which involve localizing video segments of events and predicting clip-wise saliency scores based on text queries. The recent methods, while effective, may overlook two aspects: 1) Multimodal features often show weak alignment from frozen encoders, hindering thorough semantic exploration of video clips through fine-grained cross-modal interaction. 2) Due to the absence of significant distinction between adjacent video clips, it is challenging for clip-level context modeling to accurately locate query-relevant content. To mitigate these gaps and inspired by the human routine in understanding visual events, we propose a progressive framework dubbed “what and where” to initially grasp the aligned semantics of each video clip, and then proceed to scan moment-level contextual features temporally to identify events matching the query. In the ‘what’ stage, to enable explicit alignment of modal features and achieve a thorough semantic understanding, we firstly devise the Initial Semantic Projection (ISP) loss to bring closer different modal features with similar semantics. Additionally, we develop a Clip Semantic Mining module to deeply mine the relevance of these identified semantics to the specific query (at both word- and sentence-level). In the ‘where’ stage, to enhance feature distinctiveness, we design a Multi-Context Perception module that models moment-level context. It includes an Event Context (EC) branch and a Chronological Context (CC) branch, focusing on possible query-relevant event moments and temporal moments of various lengths. Finally, extensive experiments validate the state-of-the-art performance of our W2W model on three benchmark datasets without additional pre-training. 2025 Causality-Inspired Unsupervised Domain Adaptation With Target Style Imitation for Medical Image Segmentation
abstract
Deep learning performance may decrease substantially with unseen heterogeneous data. While most unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods seek to address this through image alignment, they often ignore uncertainty style fluctuations within the target domain. When testing image styles vary in both direction and intensity, such models may fail to adapt. Furthermore, existing UDA methods tend to over-reliance on domain-level entire feature alignment, resulting in potentially over-exploiting semantic content-independent cues (e.g., intensity) as shortcut features. To address these limitations, this paper introduces an innovative and model-agnostic Causality-inspired Representation Learning Based on Target Style Imitation method for UDA. Specifically, we propose a novel Target Style Imitation (TSI) data augmentation approach to diversify the training data and align training and unseen target testing image styles. TSI constructs a Gaussian distribution for the target domain style and simulates unseen testing style variations through random sampling. Additionally, inspired by the stable and generalizable causal mechanism, we propose Causality-inspired Representation Learning (CRL) based on TSI method to enforce feature representations to adhere to causal properties (i.e., Separation and Independence) essential for robust UDA, thus fostering the model to focus on the domain-invariant semantic features. Our method surpasses state-of-the-art methods on two cross-modality medical image segmentation datasets.

2025 MV-CLIP: Multi-View CLIP for Zero-Shot 3D Shape Recognition
abstract
Large-scale pre-trained models have demonstrated impressive performance in vision and language tasks within open-world scenarios. Due to the lack of comparable pre-trained models for 3D shapes, recent methods utilize language-image pre-training to realize zero-shot 3D shape recognition. However, due to the modality gap, pretrained language-image models are not confident enough in the generalization to 3D shape recognition. Consequently, this paper aims to improve the confidence with view selection and hierarchical prompts. Building on the well-established CLIP model, we introduce view selection in the vision side that minimizes entropy to identify the most informative views for 3D shape. On the textual side, hierarchical prompts combined of hand-crafted and GPT-generated prompts are proposed to refine predictions. The first layer prompts several classification candidates with traditional class-level descriptions, while the second layer refines the prediction based on function-level descriptions or further distinctions between the candidates. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed modules for zero-shot 3D shape recognition. Remarkably, without the need for additional training, our proposed method achieves impressive zero-shot 3D classification accuracies of 84.44%, 91.51%, and 66.17% on ModelNet40, ModelNet10, and ShapeNet Core55, respectively. Furthermore, we will make the code publicly available to facilitate reproducibility and further research in this area.

2025 Temporal and Spatial Analysis in Early Sepsis Prediction via Causal Disentanglements
abstract
Sepsis is one of the main causes of death in ICU patients, and accurate and stable early prediction is essential for clinical intervention. Existing methods mostly rely on traditional time series models (e.g., LSTM, Transformer) or clinical scoring criteria (e.g., SOFA, qSOFA), but face two major challenges: 1) spurious correlations in the data affect the robustness of the model; 2) Lack of modeling the underlying causal relationships in the data space. We propose a Serialized Causal Disentanglement Model (SCDM) that decouples latent variables into sepsis-related factors ($u$), other disease-related factors ($v$), and irrelevant confounders ($s$). Based on the MIMIC-IV v2.2 dataset (3,511 positive samples and 17,538 negative samples), SCDM took patient clinical indicators, personal information, and clinical notes as input, and achieved an AUC of 0.765-0.928in the prediction task 48 to 0 hours before the onset of sepsis. The performance is significantly better than the baseline models (e.g., Transformer's 0.662-0.910, MGP-AttTCN's 0.692-0.913). Experiments show that optimizing the time window (5 hours of continuous observation) and variable selection (45 key indicators) can improve the performance of the model. The effectiveness of causal unwinding is verified by the visualization of Grad CAM and t-SNE, key clinical indicators such as platelet count, lactic acid, and respiratory rate are further identified to provide interpretable decision support for doctors. Our study provides a high-precision and interpretable causal disentanglement framework for early prediction of sepsis, which is expected to promote the development of intelligent diagnosis and treatment in the ICU.

2025 Structure Causal Models and LLMs Integration in Medical Visual Question Answering
abstract
Medical Visual Question Answering (MedVQA) aims to answer medical questions according to medical images. However, the complexity of medical data leads to confounders that are difficult to observe, so bias between images and questions is inevitable. Such cross-modal bias makes it challenging to infer medically meaningful answers. In this work, we propose a causal inference framework for the MedVQA task, which effectively eliminates the relative confounding effect between the image and the question to ensure the precision of the question-answering (QA) session. We are the first to introduce a novel causal graph structure that represents the interaction between visual and textual elements, explicitly capturing how different questions influence visual features. During optimization, we apply the mutual information to discover spurious correlations and propose a multi-variable resampling front-door adjustment method to eliminate the relative confounding effect, which aims to align features based on their true causal relevance to the question-answering task. In addition, we also introduce a prompt strategy that combines multiple prompt forms to improve the model's ability to understand complex medical data and answer accurately. Extensive experiments on three MedVQA datasets demonstrate that 1) our method significantly improves the accuracy of MedVQA, and 2) our method achieves true causal correlations in the face of complex medical data.

2025 DSDP: Real-Time Asymmetric Dual-Stream Instance Segmentation Embedding Depth-Predictive Architecture for Enhanced Scene Understanding
abstract
Instance segmentation can help vehicles or robots enhance their understanding of a scene through the pixel-level segmentation of different objects. However, occlusion and boundary blur, especially in cases with similar colors or textures, are still challenges encountered in real-time robust segmentation tasks. To segment a complete instance boundary, the existing 2D approaches fuse local and abstract semantic features derived from the color domain, which leads to homogeneous semantic information, and efficiently separating different objects is difficult in some cases. To address these complicated scenes, inspired by a human prediction processing strategy, where “the brain fills in missing information in advance to help make better decisions”, this study proposes a real-time asymmetric dual-stream instance segmentation algorithm embedding a depth-predictive architecture that provides the covisible depth information of objects. Furthermore, a cross-domain data fusion method and an enhancement-decoupling loss are designed to complement RGB data by utilizing the rich foreground and boundary details of the predicted depth map. In addition, our model can be fine-tuned to integrate it with real depth domain data provided by different input devices. Extensive experiments conducted on the COCO, OCHuman and CityScapes datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. We further deployed our DSDP method on a UAV platform for validation purposes and qualitatively confirmed its validity.

2025 DCDL: Dual Causal Disentangled Learning for Zero-Shot Sketch-Based Image Retrieval
abstract
Zero-shot sketch-based image retrieval (ZS-SBIR) is a challenging task that hinges on overcoming the cross-domain differences between sketches and images. Previous methods primarily address cross-domain differences by creating a common embedding space, improving final retrieval results. However, most previous approaches have overlooked a critical aspect: sketch-based image retrieval task actually requires only the cross-domain invariant information relevant to the retrieval. Irrelevant information (such as posture, expression, background, and specificity) may detract from retrieval accuracy. In addition, most previous methods perform well on traditional SBIR datasets but lack corresponding research on generalization and extensibility in the face of more diverse and complex data. To address these issues, we propose a Dual Causal Disentangled Learning (DCDL) for ZS-SBIR. This approach can mitigate the negative impact of irrelevant features by separating retrieval-relevant features in the latent variable space. Specifically, we constructed a causal disentanglement model using two Variational Autoencoders (VAE), each applied to the sketch and image domains, to obtain disentangled variables with exchangeable attributes. Our framework effectively integrates causal intervention with disentangled representation learning, enabling a clearer separation of cross-domain retrieval-relevant and intra-class irrelevant features, which can be recombined into new reconstructed samples. Concurrently, we designed a Dual Alignment Module (DAM), leveraging the accurate and comprehensive semantic features provided by a text encoder pre-trained on large-scale datasets to supplement semantic associations and align disentangled retrieval-relevant features. The Dual Alignment Module enhances the model's ability to generalize across diverse datasets by effectively aligning retrieval-relevant information from different domains. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on the Sketchy and TU–Berlin datasets. Additionally, more experiments on larger scale dataset QuickDraw, fine-grained datasets, Shoe-V2 and Chair-V2, as well as an inter-dataset further validate the generalization and extensibility of DCDL.

2025 Disentangled Denoising and Counterfactual Balance for Multimodal Recommendation
abstract
Recently, graph convolutional network-based dual-view multimodal recommendation methods have achieved great success. They extract multimodal and behavior features based on item-item and user-item graphs, respectively. However, they still have two- fold limitations. First, the relevance between multimodal semantics and user preferences is ignored, resulting in the propagation and coupling of preference-irrelevant noise. Second, the direct use of uneven factual user-item graphs is suboptimal, as both redundant noisy edges and missing positive interaction edges impair recommendations. To solve the above issues, we propose aDisentAngled deNoising andCounterfactual balancEmethod for multimodal recommendation, dubbed asDANCE. Specifically, for multimodal features, we explicitly disentangle them into preference-relevant and preference-irrelevant representations, to absorb and discard irrelevant noise via the latter. An orthogonal regularization and a contrastive learning task on preference relevance score prediction are proposed as the dual safeguard to prevent preference-relevant representations from encoding irrelevant noise. For behavior feature extraction, we construct a balanced user-item graph by integrating factual and counterfactual graphs. In this process, we pre-train a behavior simulator to build the counterfactual graph with full interactions. Top-$K$sampling is adopted to omit noisy edges and add missing edges in the graph. The final recommendation is performed upon the fused representation of preference-relevant multimodal and behavior representations. Extensive experiments on three public datasets verify the power of our DANCE.

2025 Causal Disentanglement-Based Hidden Markov Model for Cross-Domain Bearing Fault Diagnosis
abstract
In the predictive maintenance of modern industries, accurate fault diagnosis under complex conditions is now a major research focus. Recent research has demonstrated the effectiveness of deep learning in advancing bearing fault diagnosis. However, due to the scarcity of industrial failure data, achieving robust generalization in complex working conditions remains a challenge. To address this, we propose the causal disentanglement-based hidden Markov model (CDHM), which is designed to recognize the underlying causality in bearing vibration signals, capturing essential fault patterns for a more accurate and generalizable fault representation. Compared to signal-processing methods, deep learning approaches bypass the complex signal analysis, yet overlook the significance of signal theories in precise fault diagnosis. Nevertheless, the bearing vibration mechanism sheds light on the fact that the vibration induced by a certain type of fault has a consistent pattern across different system conditions, while the fault-irrelevant vibration such as noise and interference varies. Therefore, the CDHM constructs a time-series structural causal model (SCM), offering a new perspective on the interconnections of bearing vibration signals. Based on the SCM, a hidden Markovian variational autoencoder (VAE) is designed to progressively disentangle the vibration signal into two parts: a fault-relevant representation capturing essential bearing fault characteristics, and a fault-irrelevant representation capturing system and environmental interference. While unsupervised causal disentanglement typically presents optimization challenges, the CDHM benefits from cross-domain fault diagnosis tasks by leveraging the cross-domain consistency of the fault-relevant representation and the domain sensitivity of the fault-irrelevant representation. This design aligns the optimization objectives of causal disentanglement learning and cross-domain transfer learning, enabling mutually reinforcing optimization and ensuring robust generalization across diverse operating conditions. We validate the CDHM through experiments on the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Intelligent Maintenance System (IMS), and Paderborn University (PU) datasets, demonstrating its strong potential for industrial applications.

2024 Graph Disentangled Contrastive Learning with Personalized Transfer for Cross-Domain Recommendation
abstract
Cross-Domain Recommendation (CDR) has been proven to effectively alleviate the data sparsity problem in Recommender System (RS). Recent CDR methods often disentangle user features into domain-invariant and domain-specific features for efficient cross-domain knowledge transfer. Despite showcasing robust performance, three crucial aspects remain unexplored for existing disentangled CDR approaches: i) The significance nuances of the interaction behaviors are ignored in generating disentangled features; ii) The user features are disentangled irrelevant to the individual items to be recommended; iii) The general knowledge transfer overlooks the user's personality when interacting with diverse items. To this end, we propose a Graph Disentangled Contrastive framework for CDR (GDCCDR) with personalized transfer by meta-networks. An adaptive parameter-free filter is proposed to gauge the significance of diverse interactions, thereby facilitating more refined disentangled representations. In sight of the success of Contrastive Learning (CL) in RS, we propose two CL-based constraints for item-aware disentanglement. Proximate CL ensures the coherence of domain-invariant features between domains, while eliminatory CL strives to disentangle features within each domains using mutual information between users and items. Finally, for domain-invariant features, we adopt meta-networks to achieve personalized transfer. Experimental results on four real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of GDCCDR over state-of-the-art methods.

2024 AnyScene: Customized Image Synthesis with Composited Foreground
abstract
Recent advancements in text-to-image technology have significantly advanced the field of image customization. Among various applications, the task of customizing diverse scenes for user-specified composited elements holds great application value but has not been extensively explored. Addressing this gap, we propose AnyScene, a specialized framework designed to create varied scenes from compos-ited foreground using textual prompts. AnyScene addresses the primary challenges inherent in existing methods, particularly scene disharmony due to a lack of foreground semantic understanding and distortion of foreground elements. Specifically, we develop a foreground injection module that guides a pretrained diffusion model to generate cohesive scenes in visual harmony with the provided foreground. To enhance robust generation, we implement a layout control strategy that prevents distortions of foreground elements. Furthermore, an efficient image blending mechanism seam-lessly reintegrates foreground details into the generated scenes, producing outputs with overall visual harmony and precise foreground details. In addition, we propose a new benchmark and a series of quantitative metrics to evaluate this proposed image customization task. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of AnyScene, which confirms its potential in various applications.

2024 CAT-DM: Controllable Accelerated Virtual Try-On with Diffusion Model
abstract
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) dominate the research field in image-based virtual try-on, but have not resolved problems such as unnatural deformation of garments and the blurry generation quality. While the generative quality of diffusion models is impressive, achieving controllability poses a significant challenge when applying it to virtual try-on and multiple denoising iterations limit its potential for real-time applications. In this paper, we propose Controllable Accelerated virtual Try-on with Diffusion Model (CAT-DM). To enhance the controllability, a basic diffusion-based virtual try-on network is designed, which utilizes ControlNet to introduce additional control conditions and improves the feature extraction of garment images. In terms of acceleration, CAT-DM initiates a reverse denoising process with an implicit distribution generated by a pre-trained GAN-based model. Compared with previous try-on methods based on diffusion models, CAT-DM not only retains the pattern and texture details of the in-shop garment but also reduces the sampling steps without compromising generation quality. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of CAT-DM against both GAN-based and diffusion-based methods in producing more real-istic images and accurately reproducing garment patterns.

2024 Dual-Stage Uncertainty Modeling for Unsupervised Cross-Domain 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
Unsupervised cross-domain 3D model retrieval aims to retrieve unlabeled 3D models (target domain) using labeled 2D images (source domain). Domain adaptation approaches have shown impressive performance for cross-domain 3D model retrieval. However, conventional methods typically represent samples from different domains as deterministic points, overlooking the diversity in sample characteristics and relationships. These approaches lead to challenges in achieving a robust representation of both samples and categories. To address above challenges, we propose a dual-stage uncertainty modeling (DSUM) for unsupervised cross-domain 3D model retrieval, which utilizes Gaussian distribution to effectively model the uncertainty characteristics in both sample and class and obtain the robust and domain-invariant representations. Specifically, in the multi-view uncertainty encoding stage, we discard the conventional pooling operations and utilize the uncertainty modeling among multiple views to fuse the common and specific information of 2D images and 3D models. In the cross-domain feature alignment stage, we adopt the Gaussian distribution of samples belonging to the same category, which can well maintain the sample diversity as well as facilitate to eliminate the domain discrepancy. Our method achieves improvements of 2.61% and 2.65% in terms of FT on two cross-domain datasets, respectively, verifying its superiority through extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments.

2024 Inter- and Intra-Domain Potential User Preferences for Cross-Domain Recommendation
abstract
Data sparsity poses a persistent challenge in Recommender Systems (RS), driving the emergence of Cross-Domain Recommendation (CDR) as a potential remedy. However, most existing CDR methods often struggle to circumvent the transfer of domain-specific information, which are perceived as noise in the target domain. Additionally, they primarily concentrate on inter-domain information transfer, disregarding the comprehensive exploration of data within intra-domains. To address these limitations, we propose SUCCDR (SeparatingUser features withCompound samples), a novel approach that tackles data sparsity by leveraging both cross-domain knowledge transfer and comprehensive intra-domain analysis. Specifically, to ensure the exclusion of noisy domain-specific features during the transfer process, user preferences are separated into domain-invariant and domain-specific features through three efficient constraints. Furthermore, the unobserved items are leveraged to generate compound samples that intelligently merge observed and unobserved potential user-item interaction, utilizing a simple yet efficient attention mechanism to enable a comprehensive and unbiased representation of user preferences. We evaluate the performance of SUCCDR on two real-world datasets, Douban and Amazon, and compare it with state-of-the-art single-domain and cross-domain recommendation methods. The experimental results demonstrate that SUCCDR outperforms existing approaches, highlighting its ability to effectively alleviate data sparsity problem.

2024 Event-Aware Retrospective Learning for Knowledge-Based Image Captioning
abstract
External knowledge has been widely applied in image captioning tasks to enrich the generated sentences. However, existing methods retrieve knowledge by considering only semantic relevance while ignoring whether they are useful for captioning. For example, when querying “person” in external knowledge, the most relevant concepts may be “wearing shirt” or “riding horse” statistically, which are not consistent with image contents and introduce noise to generated sentences. Intuitively, we humans can iteratively correlate visual clues with corresponding knowledge to distinguish useful clues from noise. Therefore, we propose an event-aware retrospective learning network for knowledge-based image captioning, which employs a retrospective validation mechanism on captioning models to align the retrieved knowledge with visual contents. This approach is an event-aware perspective and helps select useful knowledge that corresponds to visual facts. To better align images and knowledge, 1) we design an event-aware retrieval algorithm that clusters word-centered knowledge into triplet-centered knowledge (i.e., from “” to “- edge -”, which provides an event context to facilitate knowledge retrieval and validation. 2) We revisit image contents to retrospectively validate retrieved knowledge by aligning the visual representation between knowledge and image. We summarize the visual characteristics of each knowledge event from the visual genome dataset to help learn which knowledge does not exist in the visual scene and should be discarded. 3) We adopt a dynamic knowledge fusion module that calibrates image and knowledge representations for sentence generation, which includes a knowledge-controlled gate unit that jointly calculates visual and semantic features in event-aware patterns. Compared to current knowledge-based captioning methods, the proposed network retrospectively learns the visual facts by event-aware retrieval and knowledge-image visual alignment, which regularizes the knowledge-incorporated captioning with visual evidence. Extensive experiments on the MS-COCO dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Ablation studies and visualization demonstrate the advantages of each component of the proposed model.

2024 Long Dialogue Emotion Detection Based on Commonsense Knowledge Graph Guidance
abstract
Dialogue emotion detection is always challenging due to human subjectivity and the randomness of dialogue content. In a conversation, the emotion of each person often develops via a cumulative process, which can be influenced by many elements of uncertainty. Much commonsense knowledge influences people's emotions imperceptibly, such as experiential or habitual knowledge. In the process of conversation, this commonsense knowledge information can be used to enrich the semantic information of each utterance and improve the accuracy of emotion recognition. In this paper, we propose a growing graph model for dialogues emotion detection based on retrieval of external knowledge atlas ATOMIC from local and global respectively, which can effectively represent the dialogues as a process variable in a sequence and the correlation among utterances also can be represented by the graph model. In particular, 1) we introduce a common sense knowledge graph for linking the commonsense knowledge retrieved from external knowledge atlas ATOMIC, which can effectively add auxiliary information to improve the performance of each utterance's representation. 2) We propose a novel self-supervised learning method for extracting the latent topic of each dialogue. Based on this design, we also propose an effective optimization mechanism to make the representation (embedding) of latent topic has a better distinction for the next operation. 3) Finally, the cross-attention module is utilized to combine the utterances' features and the latent conversation topic information. The attention mechanism can effectively use topic information to supplement the representation of utterances and improve recognition performance. The model is tested on three popular datasets in dialogue emotion detection and is empirically demonstrated to outperform the state-of-the-art approaches. Meanwhile, to demonstrate the performance of our approach, we also build a long dialogue dataset. The average length of each conversation is over 50 utterances. The final experimental results also demonstrate the superior performance of our approach.

2024 Knowledge-Enhanced Causal Reinforcement Learning Model for Interactive Recommendation
abstract
Owing to its inherently dynamic nature and economical training cost, offline reinforcement learning (RL) is typically employed to implement an interactive recommender system (IRS). A crucial challenge in offline RL-based IRSs is the data sparsity issue, i.e., it is hard to mine user preferences well from the limited number of user-item interactions. In this article, we propose a knowledge-enhanced causal reinforcement learning model (KCRL) to mitigate data sparsity in IRSs. We make technical extensions to the offline RL framework in terms of the reward function and state representation. Specifically, we first propose a group preference-injected causal user model (GCUM) to learn user satisfaction (i.e., reward) estimation. We introduce beneficial group preference information, namely, the group effect, via causal inference to compensate for incomplete user interests extracted from sparse data. Then, we learn the RL recommendation policy with the reward given by the GCUM. We propose a knowledge-enhanced state encoder (KSE) to generate knowledge-enriched user state representations at each time step, which is assisted by a self-constructed user-item knowledge graph. Extensive experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that our model significantly outperforms the baselines.

2024 CDCM: ChatGPT-Aided Diversity-Aware Causal Model for Interactive Recommendation
abstract
In recent years, interactive recommender systems (IRSs) have attracted extensive interest. Existing IRSs are typically implemented with offline reinforcement learning (RL). They are devoted to improving recommendation accuracy by optimizing the extraction of users' inherent preferences. However, there hasn't been much attention on recommendation diversity, which could result in the monotony effect,i.e., categories of recommended items are consistently fixed and unchanging. In this paper, we center on category diversification in IRSs while largely preserving or even boosting recommendation accuracy. To this end, we propose a ChatGPT-aided diversity-aware causal model (CDCM) to enhance the offline RL framework with causal inference and ChatGPT. Specifically, we first propose a diversity-aware causal user model (DCUM) to estimate user satisfaction. This model disentangles the causal effect of users' inherent preferences and the monotony effect to obtain user satisfaction with both accuracy and diversity. Then, DCUM is used to assist the RL agent in recommendation policy learning. A ChatGPT-aided state encoder (CSE) is proposed to provide user state representation for each time step of policy learning. With the help of ChatGPT, CSE incorporates multi-category information in line with users' potential preferences to promote diverse and relevant category recommendations. Extensive experiment results on two real-world datasets validate the superiority of our CDCM regarding both accuracy and diversity.

2024 Privacy-preserving Multi-source Cross-domain Recommendation Based on Knowledge Graph
abstract
The cross-domain recommender systems aim to alleviate the data sparsity problem in the target domain by transferring knowledge from the auxiliary domain. However, existing works ignore the fact that the data sparsity problem may also exist in the single auxiliary domain, and sharing user behavior data is restricted by the privacy policy. In addition, their cross-domain models lack interpretability. To address these concerns, we propose a novel multi-source cross-domain model based on knowledge graph. Specifically, to avoid the insufficiency of single auxiliary domain, we construct a knowledge graph comprehensively leveraging items from multiple auxiliary domains. To avoid the leakage of user privacy when user information is transferred to multiple domains, we construct graph for information transfer between items to effectively avoid the propagation of users’ private information between different domains. We implicitly integrate the user–item interaction by transferring the learned item embeddings. To improve the interpretability of cross-domain knowledge transfer, we propose a knowledge graph-based retrieval and fusion method to transfer knowledge derived from multiple auxiliary domains. An attention-based fusion network is designed to enhance the representation of the targeted user and items with the transferred item embedding. We perform extensive experiments on three real-world datasets, demonstrating that our model outperforms the states of the art.

2023 Progressive Positive Association Framework for Image and Text Retrieval
abstract
With the increasing amount of multimedia data, the demand for fast and accurate access to information is growing. Image and text retrieval learns visual and textual semantic relationships for multimedia data management and content recognition. The main challenge of this task is how to derive image and text similarity based on local associations under huge modal gap. However, the existing methods compute semantic relevance using associations of all fragments (visual regions and textual words), which underestimate the uncertainty of associations and discriminative positive associations leading to cross-modal correspondence ambiguity. To address these issues, we propose a novel Progressive Positive Association Framework (PPAF), which models association uncertainty as a normal distribution and progressively mines direct and potential positive associations according to the characteristics of the association distribution. We design positive association matching, which adaptively fuses multi-step associations for local matching depending on the relevance difference. In addition, we apply KL loss constraint on cross-modal association distribution in order to enhance local semantic alignment. Extended experiments demonstrate the leading performance of PPAF.

2023 Efficient Spatio-Temporal Video Grounding with Semantic-Guided Feature Decomposition
abstract
Spatio-temporal video grounding (STVG) aims to localize the spatio-temporal object tube in a video according to a given text query. Current approaches address the STVG task with end-to-end frameworks while suffering from heavy computational complexity and insufficient spatio-temporal interactions. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel Semantic-Guided Feature Decomposition based Network (SGFDN). A semantic-guided mapping operation is proposed to decompose the 3D spatio-temporal feature into 2D motions and 1D object embedding without losing much object-related semantic information. Thus, the computational complexity in computationally expensive operations such as attention mechanisms can be effectively reduced by replacing the input spatio-temporal feature with the decomposed features. Furthermore, based on this decomposition strategy, a pyramid relevance filtering based attention is proposed to capture the cross-modal interactions at multiple spatio-temporal scales. In addition, a decomposition-based grounding head is proposed to locate the queried objects with less computational complexity. Extensive experiments on two widely-used STVG datasets (VidSTG and HC-STVG) demonstrate that our method enjoys state-of-the-art performance as well as less computational complexity. The code has been available at https://github.com/TJUMMG/SGFDN.

2023 My Brother Helps Me: Node Injection Based Adversarial Attack on Social Bot Detection
abstract
Social platforms such as Twitter are under siege from a multitude of fraudulent users. In response, social bot detection tasks have been developed to identify such fake users. Due to the structure of social networks, the majority of methods are based on the graph neural network(GNN), which is susceptible to attacks. In this study, we propose a node injection-based adversarial attack method designed to deceive bot detection models. Notably, neither the target bot nor the newly injected bot can be detected when a new bot is added around the target bot. This attack operates in a black-box fashion, implying that any information related to the victim model remains unknown. To our knowledge, this is the first study exploring the resilience of bot detection through graph node injection. Furthermore, we develop an attribute recovery module to revert the injected node embedding from the graph embedding space back to the original feature space, enabling the adversary to manipulate node perturbation effectively. We conduct adversarial attacks on four commonly used GNN structures for bot detection on two widely used datasets: Cresci-2015 and TwiBot-22. The attack success rate is over 73% and the rate of newly injected nodes being detected as bots is below 13% on these two datasets.

2023 Instrumental Variable Learning for Chest X-ray Classification
abstract
The chest X-ray (CXR) is commonly employed to diagnose thoracic illnesses, but the challenge of achieving accurate automatic diagnosis through this method persists due to the complex relationship between pathology. In the past few years, numerous approaches based on deep learning have been proposed to address this issue but confounding factors such as image resolution or noise problems often damage model performance. In this paper, we focus on the chest X-ray classification task and proposed an interpretable instrumental variable (IV) learning framework, to eliminate the spurious association and obtain accurate causal representation. Specifically, we first construct a structural causal model (SCM) for our task and learn the confounders and the preliminary representations of IV, we then leverage electronic health record (EHR) as auxiliary information and we fuse the above feature with our transformer-based semantic fusion module, so the IV has the medical semantic. Meanwhile, the reliability of IV is further guaranteed via the constraints of mutual information between related causal variables. Finally, our approach's performance is demonstrated using the MIMIC-CXR, NIH ChestX-ray 14, and CheXpert datasets, and we achieve competitive results.

2023 MRFT: Multiscale Recurrent Fusion Transformer Based Prior Knowledge for Bit-Depth Enhancement
abstract
Bit-depth enhancement (BDE) plays an important role in providing high bit-depth data support for high-dynamic range (HDR) display. Although convolutional neural network (CNN) based BDE methods have achieved top performance, multiscale feature extraction and fusion still suffer from some inherent architectural flaws. Moreover, the training-data-scarce scene has not been effectively explored. To this end, this paper proposes an innovative multiscale recurrent fusion transformer (MRFT) framework, which contains three key components, i.e. multiscale transformer feature encoder, recurrent feature fusion module, and prior knowledge injection. Specifically, the multiscale transformer feature encoder consists of a prior-injected context encoder (PICE) and a multiscale local feature encoder (MLFE). PICE leverages the vanilla self-attention mechanism to extract the global context correlating spatially-distant contents for distinguishing long-distance false contours. MLFE exploits the local self-attention mechanism with varied window sizes to capture different-scale detail features. Then, a hierarchical recurrent decoder (HRD) is proposed as the recurrent feature fusion module to fuse multiscale visual information with global guidance. Via the circular query-key mechanism, global-to-local information is progressively fused. Furthermore, we propose a two-stage alternating optimization strategy for prior knowledge injection. By pre-parameterizing the global auxiliary priors, the training dilemma on the data-scarce domain is significantly alleviated. Extensive analyses on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our MRFT in terms of quantitative measures and aesthetic effects.

2023 Unsupervised Cross-Media Graph Convolutional Network for 2D Image-Based 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
With the rapid development of 3D construction technology, 3D models have been implemented in many applications. In particular, the fields of virtual and augmented reality have created a considerable demand for rapid access to large sets of 3D models in recent years. An effective method for addressing the demand is to search 3D models based on 2D images because 2D images can be easily captured by smartphones or other lightweight vision sensors. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised cross-media graph convolutional network (UCM-GCN) for 3D model retrieval based on 2D images. Here, we render views from 3D models to construct a graph model based on 3D model structural information. Then, we utilize the 2D image's visual information to bridge the gap between cross-modality data. Then, the proposed UCM-GCN is utilized to update the feature vector of the 2D image and the 3D model. Here, we introduce correlation loss to mitigate the distribution discrepancy across different modalities, which can fully consider the structural and visual similarities between the 2D image and 3D model to embed the final different modalities into the same feature space. To demonstrate the performance of our approach, we conducted a series of experiments on the MI3DOR dataset, which is utilized in SHREC19. We also compared it with other similar methods on the 3D-FUTURE dataset. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over state-of-the-art methods.

2023 CPG3D: Cross-Modal Priors Guided 3D Object Reconstruction
abstract
Three-dimensional reconstruction is a multimedia technology widely used in computer-aided modeling and 3D animation. Nevertheless, it is still hard for reconstruction methods to overcome the 3D geometry missing and the object occlusion in the single-view images. In this article, we propose a novel method (CPG3D) for reconstructing high-quality 3D shapes from a single image under the guidance of prior knowledge. Using the single-view image as the query, prior knowledge is collected from public 3D datasets, which can compensate for missing 3D geometries and assist the 3D reconstruction network to high fidelity results. Our method consists of three parts: 1) Cross-modal 3D shape retrieval module: This part retrieves related 3D shapes based on 2D images. Here, we apply the pre-trained model to guarantee the correlation between the retrieved 3D shape and the input image. 2) Multimodal information fusion module: We propose a multimodal attention mechanism to handle the information fusing of 2D visual and 3D structural information; 3) Three-dimensional reconstruction module: We propose a novel encoder-decoder network for 3D shape reconstruction. Specifically, we employ the skip connection operation to link the target image's visual information with the 3D model's structural information to enhance the prediction of 3D details. During training, we employ two carefully designed loss functions to lead the multimodal learning to obtain proper modal features. On the ShapeNet and Pix3D datasets, the final experimental results reveal that our method notably increases reconstruction quality and outperforms SOTA methods.

2023 Cross-Domain Recommendation Via User-Clustering and Multidimensional Information Fusion
abstract
Recently, recommendation systems have been widely usedin online business scenarios, which can improve the online experience by learning the user or item characteristics to predict the user’s future behavior and to realize precision marketing. However, data sparsity and cold-start problems limit the performance of recommendation systems in some emerging fields. Thus, cross-domain recommendation has been proposed to handle the abovementioned problems. Nonetheless, many cross-domain recommendations only consider modeling a single user’s representation and ignore user-group information (this group has similar behavior and interests). Additionally, most studies are based on matrix factorization for generating embeddings, which results in a weak generalization ability of user latent features. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-domain recommendation model viaUser-Clustering andMultidimensional informationFusion (UCMF) that attempts to enhance user representation learning in a data sparsity scenario for accurate recommendation. In addition, we consider a user’s individual information and cross-domain feature information. A novel multidimensional information fusion is proposed to guarantee the robustness of the user features. In particular, we apply a graph neural network to learn the user-group features, which can effectively save the correlation among users’ information and guarantee feature performance. In other words, the Wasserstein autoencoder is utilized to learn the cross-domain user features, which can guarantee the consistency of user features from different domains. Experiments conducted on real-world datasets empirically demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in cross-domain recommendation.

2023 Self-supervised Image-based 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
Image-based 3D model retrieval aims at organizing unlabeled 3D models according to the relevance to the labeled 2D images. With easy accessibility of 2D images and wide applications of 3D models, image-based 3D model retrieval attracts more and more attentions. However, it is still a challenging problem due to the modality gap between 2D images and 3D models. In spite of the remarkable progress brought by domain adaptation techniques for this research topic, which usually propose to align the global distribution statistics of two domains, these methods are limited in learning discriminative features for target samples due to the lack of label information in target domain. In this article, besides utilizing the label information of 2D image domain and the adversarial domain alignment, we additionally incorporate self-supervision to address cross-domain 3D model retrieval problem. Specifically, we simultaneously optimize the adversarial adaptation for both domains based on visual features and the contrastive learning for unlabeled 3D model domain to help the feature extractor to learn discriminative feature representations. The contrastive learning is used to map view representations of the identical model nearby while view representations of different models far apart. To guarantee adequate and high-quality negative samples for contrastive learning, we design a memory bank to store and update representative view for each 3D model based on entropy minimization principle. Comprehensive experimental results on the public image-based 3D model retrieval datasets, i.e., MI3DOR and MI3DOR-2, have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2022 Cross-Domain 3D Model Retrieval Based On Contrastive Learning And Label Propagation
abstract
In this work, we aim to tackle the task of unsupervised image based 3D model retrieval, where we seek to retrieve unlabeled 3D models that are most visually similar to the 2D query image. Due to the challenging modality gap between 2D images and 3D models, existing mainstream methods adopt domain-adversarial techniques to eliminate the gap, which cannot guarantee category-level alignment that is important for retrieval performance. Recent methods align the class centers of 2D images and 3D models to pay attention to the category-level alignment. However, there still exist two main issues: 1) the category-level alignment is too rough, and 2) the category prediction of unlabeled 3D models is not accurate. To overcome the first problem, we utilize contrastive learning for fine-grained category-level alignment across domains, which pulls both prototypes and samples with the same semantic information closer and pushes those with different semantic information apart. To provide reliable semantic prediction for contrastive learning and also address the second issue, we propose the consistent decision for pseudo labels of 3D models based on both the trained image classifier and label propagation. Experiments are carried out on MI3DOR and MI3DOR-2 datasets, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

2022 Multigranular Visual-Semantic Embedding for Cloth-Changing Person Re-identification
abstract
To date, only a few works have focused on the cloth-changing person Re-identification (ReID) task, but since it is very difficult to extract generalized and robust features for representing people with different clothes, thus, their performances need to be improved. Moreover, visual-semantic information is also often ignored. To solve these issues, in this work, a novel multigranular visual-semantic embedding algorithm (MVSE) is proposed for cloth-changing person ReID, where visual semantic information and human attributes are embedded into the network, and the generalized features of human appearance can be well learned to effectively solve the problem of cloth-changing. Specifically, to fully represent a person with clothing changes, a multigranular feature representation scheme (MGR) is employed to adaptively extract multilevel and multigranular feature information, and then a cloth desensitization network (CDN) is designed to improve the feature robustness for the person with different clothes, where different high-level human attributes are fully utilized. Moreover, to further solve the issue of pose changes and occlusion under different camera perspectives, a partially semantically aligned network (PSA) is proposed to obtain the visual-semantic information that is used to align the human attributes. Most importantly, these three modules are jointly explored in a unified framework. Extensive experimental results on four cloth-changing person ReID datasets demonstrate that the MVSE algorithm can extract highly robust feature representations of cloth-changing persons, and it can outperform state-of-the-art cloth-changing person ReID approaches.

2022 HMTN: Hierarchical Multi-scale Transformer Network for 3D Shape Recognition
abstract
As an important field of multimedia, 3D shape recognition has attracted much research attention in recent years. Various approaches have been proposed, within which the multiview-based methods show their promising performances. In general, an effective 3D shape recognition algorithm should take both the multiview local and global visual information into consideration, and explore the inherent properties of generated 3D descriptors to guarantee the performance of feature alignment in the common space. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel Hierarchical Multi-scale Transformer Network (HMTN) for the 3D shape recognition task. In HMTN, we propose a multi-level regional transformer (MLRT) module for shape descriptor generation. MLRT includes two branches that aim to extract the intra-view local characteristics by modeling region-wise dependencies and give the supervision of multiview global information under different granularities. Specifically, MLRT can comprehensively consider the relations of different regions and focus on the discriminative parts, which improves the effectiveness of the learned descriptors. Finally, we adopt the cross-granularity contrastive learning (CCL) mechanism for shape descriptor alignment in the common space. It can explore and utilize the cross-granularity semantic correlation to guide the descriptor extraction process while performing the instance alignment based on the category information. We evaluate the proposed network on several public benchmarks, and HMTN achieves competitive performance compared with the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods.

2022 Iterative Residual Feature Refinement Network for Bit-Depth Enhancement
abstract
Bit-depth enhancement (BDE) restores high bit-depth (HBD) images from low bit-depth (LBD) ones, which has important applications. Recently, residual-optimized BDE algorithms based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved top performance. However, they fail to use a single model to accurately recover all frequency information encoded by missing significant bits at one time on challenging large bit-depth recovery tasks. In this paper, we redefine BDE residual recovery from the perspective of image frequency characteristics. On this basis, we propose an iterative residual feature optimization strategy, which provides an implicit error correction mechanism and improves training and inference efficiency. Furthermore, we design a simple but effective iterative residual feature refinement network (IRFRN). By linking model complexity with the recovery of different frequency information, IRFRN enables a single model to simultaneously recover the missing low and high frequency information. Extensive experiments indicate that our method achieves the state-of-the-art quantitative and qualitative performance on large bit-depth recovery tasks.

2022 Joint Local Correlation and Global Contextual Information for Unsupervised 3D Model Retrieval and Classification
abstract
Unsupervised 3D model analysis has attracted tremendous attentions with the increasing growth of 3D model data and the extensive human annotations. Many effective methods have been designed to address the 3D model analysis with labeled information, while rare methods devote to unsupervised deep learning due to the difficulty of mining reliable information. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised deep learning method named joint local correlation and global contextual information (LCGC) for 3D model retrieval and classification, which mines the reliable triplet set and uses triplet loss to optimize the deep neural network. Our method proposes two schemes: 1) Local self-correlation information learning, which adopts the intra and inter information to construct the view-level triplet set. 2) Global neighbor contextual information learning, which employs the neighbor contextual information to explore the reliable relations among 3D models and construct the model-level triplet set. The above schemes encourage that the selected triple set can been used to improve the discrimination of learned features. Extensive evaluations on two large-scale datasets, ModelNet40 and ShapeNet55, have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed method.

2022 Residual-Guided Multiscale Fusion Network for Bit-Depth Enhancement
abstract
Bit-depth enhancement (BDE) is a challenging task due to stubborn false contour artifacts and disappeared detailed information. Given the mixture of structural distortions and real edges in low bit-depth (LBD) images, both large and small receptive fields (RFs) are critical for BDE tasks. However, even powerful state-of-the-art CNN-based methods can hardly capture sufficient LBD features under multiple RFs. This paper proposes a residual-guided multiscale fusion network (RMFNet) to explore multiscale features in a residual manner. We find that the shuffling operation provides desired multiscale inputs for effectively distinguishing false contours from real edges without any loss of information. Therefore, we shuffle LBD images to multiple scales and then fully extract residual features under different RFs with corresponding subnets. To facilitate interscale guidance from the global context to the local context, we progressively transfer the encoded residual features between adjacent subnets from top to bottom. We further propose a dual-branch depthwise group fusion (DDGF) module to fully capture inter- and inner correlations of multiscale features with fewer parameters. Finally, extensive experiments show that our algorithm achieves excellent performance improvement both quantitatively and qualitatively, verifying its effectiveness.

2022 Region-Aware Image Captioning via Interaction Learning
abstract
Image captioning is one of the primary goals in computer vision which aims to automatically generate natural descriptions for images. Intuitively, human visual system can notice some stimulating regions at first glance, and then volitionally focus on interesting objects within the region. For example, to generate a free-form sentence about “boy-catch-baseball”, the visual region involving “boy” and “baseball” could be first attended and then guide the salient object discovery for the word-by-word generation. Till now, previous captioning works mainly rely on the object-wise modeling and ignore the rich regional patterns. To mitigate the drawback, this paper proposes the region-aware interaction learning method, which aims to explicitly capture the semantic correlations in the region and object dimensions for the word inference. First, given an image, we extract a set of regions which contain diverse objects and their relations. Second, we present the spatial-GCN interaction refining structure which can establish the connection between regions and objects to effectively capture contextual information. Third, we design the dual-attention interaction inference procedure, which enables attention to be calculated in region and object dimensions jointly for the word generation. Specifically, the guidance mechanism is proposed to selectively emphasize semantic inter-dependencies from region to object attentions. Extensive experiments on the MSCOCO dataset demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method. Additional ablation studies and visualization further validate its effectiveness.

2022 CLN: Cross-Domain Learning Network for 2D Image-Based 3D Shape Retrieval
abstract
Retrieving 3D shapes based on 2D images is a challenging research topic, due to the significant gap between different domains. Recently, various approaches have been proposed to handle this problem. However, the majority of methods target the cross-domain retrieval task as a pure domain adaptation problem, which focuses on the alignment but ignores the visual relevance between the 2D images and their corresponding 3D shapes. To fundamentally decrease the divergence between different domains, we propose a novel cross-domain learning network (CLN) for 2D image-based 3D shape retrieval task. First, we estimate the pose information from the 2D image to guide the view rendering of 3D shapes, which increases the visual correlations of the cross-domain data to eliminate the divergence between them. Second, we introduce a novel joint learning network, considering both the domain-specific characteristics and the cross-domain interactions for data alignment, which further compensates for the gap between different domains by controlling the distance of intra- and inter-classes. After the metric learning process, discriminative descriptors of images and shapes are generated for the cross-domain retrieval task. To prove the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method, we conduct extensive experiments on the MI3DOR, SHREC’13, and SHREC’14 datasets. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method, and significant improvements have been achieved compared with state-of-the-art methods.

2022 Deep Correlated Joint Network for 2-D Image-Based 3-D Model Retrieval
abstract
In this article, we propose a novel deep correlated joint network (DCJN) approach for 2-D image-based 3-D model retrieval. First, the proposed method can jointly learn two distinct deep neural networks, which are trained for individual modalities to learn two deep nonlinear transformations for visual feature extraction from the co-embedding feature space. Second, we propose the global loss function for the DCJN, consisting of a discriminative loss and a correlation loss. The discriminative loss aims to minimize the intraclass distance of the extracted features and maximize the interclass distance of such features to a large margin within each modality, while the correlation loss focuses on mitigating the distribution discrepancy across different modalities. Consequently, the proposed method can realize cross-modality feature extraction guided by the defined global loss function to benefit the similarity measure between 2-D images and 3-D models. For a comparison experiment, we contribute the current largest 2-D image-based 3-D model retrieval dataset. Moreover, the proposed method was further evaluated on three popular benchmarks, including the 3-D Shape Retrieval Contest 2014, 2016, and 2018 benchmarks. The extensive comparison experimental results demonstrate the superiority of this method over the state-of-the-art methods.

2022 Monocular Image-Based 3-D Model Retrieval: A Benchmark
abstract
Monocular image-based 3-D model retrieval aims to search for relevant 3-D models from a dataset given one RGB image captured in the real world, which can significantly benefit several applications, such as self-service checkout, online shopping, etc. To help advance this promising yet challenging research topic, we built a novel dataset and organized the first international contest for monocular image-based 3-D model retrieval. Moreover, we conduct a thorough analysis of the state-of-the-art methods. Existing methods can be classified into supervised and unsupervised methods. The supervised methods can be analyzed based on several important aspects, such as the strategies of domain adaptation, view fusion, loss function, and similarity measure. The unsupervised methods focus on solving this problem with unlabeled data and domain adaptation. Seven popular metrics are employed to evaluate the performance, and accordingly, we provide a thorough analysis and guidance for future work. 2022 I-GCN: Incremental Graph Convolution Network for Conversation Emotion Detection
abstract
Sentiment analysis and emotion detection in conversation are becoming hot topics in regard to several applications. With the development of the social robot, social network, and intelligent voice assistant, emotion detection is attracting more attention as a key component in these research fields. Many approaches have been proposed to handle this problem in recent years. However, these previous approaches focus on either the temporal change information of the conversation or the semantic correlation information of the dialogue but ignore the combination of temporal information and semantic correlation information. In this paper, we propose an incremental graph convolution network (I-GCN) to handle emotion detection in conversation. We first utilize the graph structure to represent conversation at different times, which can represent the semantic correlation information of utterances. Then, we apply the incremental graph structure to imitate the process of dynamic conversation, which can preserve the temporal change information of conversation. Especially, for the first step of the process, we creatively propose utterance-level GCN (U-GCN) and speaker-level GCN (S-GCN) to learn the features of utterances for emotion detection. U-GCN focuses on the correlations among utterances and applies the multi-head attention model to find latent correlation information among utterances, which aims to further enhance the guidance of semantic relevance for feature learning. S-GCN focuses on the correlation between speaker and utterances, which can provide a different angle to guide the feature learning of utterances. In the learning of model parameters, we constantly utilize the new utterances to fine-tune the parameters of GNN for enhancement of the contribution of temporal change information. Detailed evaluations of the proposed method on three published conversation corpuses demonstrate the great effectiveness of our approach over several conventional competitive baselines.

2022 LR-GCN: Latent Relation-Aware Graph Convolutional Network for Conversational Emotion Recognition
abstract
As an intersection of artificial intelligence and human communication analysis, Emotion Recognition in Conversation (ERC) has attracted much research attention in recent years. Existing studies, however, are limited in adequately exploiting latent relations among the constituent utterances. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing a novel approach named Latent Relation-Aware Graph Convolutional Network (LR-GCN), where both speaker dependency of the interlocutors is leveraged and latent correlations among the utterances are captured for ERC. Specifically, we first establish a graph model to incorporate the context information and speaker dependency of the conversation. Afterward, the multi-head attention mechanism is introduced to explore the latent correlations among the utterances and generate a set of all-linked graphs. Here, aiming to simultaneously exploit the original modeled speaker dependency and the explored correlation information, we introduce a dense connection layer to capture more structural information of the generated graphs. Through a multi-branch graph network, we achieve a unified representation of each utterance for final prediction. Detailed evaluations on two benchmark datasets demonstrate LR-GCN outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

2022 Toward Region-Aware Attention Learning for Scene Graph Generation
abstract
Scene graph generation (SGGen) is a challenging task due to a complex visual context of an image. Intuitively, the human visual system can volitionally focus on attended regions by salient stimuli associated with visual cues. For example, to infer the relationship between man and horse, the interaction between human leg and horseback can provide strong visual evidence to predict the predicate ride. Besides, the attended region face can also help to determine the object man. Till now, most of the existing works studied the SGGen by extracting coarse-grained bounding box features while understanding fine-grained visual regions received limited attention. To mitigate the drawback, this article proposes a region-aware attention learning method. The key idea is to explicitly construct the attention space to explore salient regions with the object and predicate inferences. First, we extract a set of regions in an image with the standard detection pipeline. Each region regresses to an object. Second, we propose the object-wise attention graph neural network (GNN), which incorporates attention modules into the graph structure to discover attended regions for object inference. Third, we build the predicate-wise co-attention GNN to jointly highlight subject's and object's attended regions for predicate inference. Particularly, each subject-object pair is connected with one of the latent predicates to construct one triplet. The proposed intra-triplet and inter-triplet learning mechanism can help discover the pair-wise attended regions to infer predicates. Extensive experiments on two popular benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method. Additional ablation studies and visualization further validate its effectiveness.

2021 Triangle-Reward Reinforcement Learning: A Visual-Linguistic Semantic Alignment for Image Captioning
abstract
Image captioning aims to generate a sentence consisting of sequential linguistic words, to describe visual units (i.e., objects, relationships, and attributes) in a given image. Most of existing methods rely on the prevalent supervised learning with cross-entropy (XE) function to transfer visual units into a sequence of linguistic words. However, we argue that the XE objective is not sensitive to visual-linguistic alignment, which cannot discriminately penalize the semantic inconsistency and shrink the context gap. To solve these problems, we propose the Triangle-Reward Reinforcement Learning (TRRL) method. TRRL uses the scene graph (G)---objects as nodes and relationships as edges---to represent images, generated sentences, and ground truth sentences individually, and mutually align them during the training process. Specifically, TRRL formulates the image captioning into cooperative agents, where the first agent aims to extract visual scene graph (Gimg) from image (I) and the second agent translates this graph into sentence (S). To discriminately penalize the visual-linguistic inconsistency, TRRL proposes the novel triangle-reward function: 1) the generated sentence and its corresponding ground truth are decomposed into the linguistic scene graph (Gsen) and ground-truth scene graph (Ggt), respectively; 2) Gimg, Gsen, and Ggt are paired to calculate the semantic similarity scores which are proportionally assigned to reward each agent. Meanwhile, to make the training objective sensitive to context changes, we propose the node-level and triplet-level scoring methods to jointly measure the visual-linguistic graph correlations. Extensive experiments on the MSCOCO dataset demonstrate the superiority of TRRL. Additional ablation studies further validate its effectiveness.

2021 SVHAN: Sequential View Based Hierarchical Attention Network for 3D Shape Recognition
abstract
As an important field of multimedia, 3D shape recognition has attracted much research attention in recent years. A lot of deep learning models have been proposed for effective 3D shape representation. The view-based methods show the superiority due to the comprehensive exploration of the visual characteristics with the help of established 2D CNN architectures. Generally, the current approaches contain the following disadvantages: First, the most majority of methods lack the consideration for sequential information among the multiple views, which can provide descriptive characteristics for shape representation. Second, the incomprehensive exploration for the multi-view correlations directly affects the discrimination of shape descriptors. Finally, roughly aggregating multi-view features leads to the loss of descriptive information, which limits the shape representation effectiveness. To handle these issues, we propose a novel sequential view based hierarchical attention network (SVHAN) for 3D shape recognition. Specifically, we first divide the view sequence into several view blocks. Then, we introduce a novel hierarchical feature aggregation module (HFAM), which hierarchically exploits the view-level, block-level, and shape-level features, the intra- and inter- view-block correlations are also captured to improve the discrimination of learned features. Subsequently, a novel selective fusion module (SFM) is designed for feature aggregation, considering the correlations between different levels and preserving effective information. Finally, discriminative and informative shape descriptors are generated for the recognition task. We validate the effectiveness of our proposed method on two public databases. The experimental results show the superiority of SVHAN against the current state-of-the-art approaches.

2021 Interactive Multimodal Attention Network for Emotion Recognition in Conversation
abstract
In this letter, we propose a novel Interactive Multimodal Attention Network (IMAN) for emotion recognition in conversations. IMAN introduces a cross-modal attention fusion module to capture cross-modal interactions of multimodal information, and employs a conversational modeling module to explore the context information and speaker dependency of the whole conversation. Concretely, the cross-modal attention fusion module captures the cross-modal interactions and complementary information among the pre-extracted unimodal features from textual, visual, acoustic modalities based on the cross-modal attention block. Afterward, the updated features from each modality are fused to concentrate more on the informative modality and achieve a refined feature for each constituent utterance. The conversational modeling module defines three different gated recurrent units (GRUs) with respect to the context information, the speaker dependency, and the emotional state of utterances. In this way, we exploit the speaker dependency and contextual information to obtain the emotional state of utterances for emotion classification. Empirical evaluations on the multimodal benchmark IEMOCAP dataset demonstrate that our IMAN achieves competitive performance compared to the state-of-the-art approaches.

2021 Scene Graph Inference via Multi-Scale Context Modeling
abstract
The scene graph generated for an image structurally represents its object interactions and it substantially aids image scene understanding. To the best of our knowledge, most current works on scene graph generation chiefly focus on pairwise object regions for object and relation inference while ignoring the global visual context outside of these regions. Guided by the intuition that object/relation inference can benefit from the visual context within an image, this paper proposes a multi-scale context modeling method, which can jointly discover and integrate the complementary object-centric and region-centric context for scene graph inference. While both the object-centric and region-centric contexts are separately modeled by their individual modules, a bi-directional message propagation strategy is designed to mutually reinforce the context modeling. A context-fused inference is then proposed to integrate the multi-scale context to guide scene graph inference. Extensive experiments establish that this method can achieve competitive performance compared to the state-of-the-art methods on three benchmarks. Additional ablation studies further validate its effectiveness. Code has been made available at: https://github.com/ningxu1990/MSCM.

2021 DAN: Deep-Attention Network for 3D Shape Recognition
abstract
Due to the wide applications in a rapidly increasing number of different fields, 3D shape recognition has become a hot topic in the computer vision field. Many approaches have been proposed in recent years. However, there remain huge challenges in two aspects: exploring the effective representation of 3D shapes and reducing the redundant complexity of 3D shapes. In this paper, we propose a novel deep-attention network (DAN) for 3D shape representation based on multiview information. More specifically, we introduce the attention mechanism to construct a deep multiattention network that has advantages in two aspects: 1) information selection, in which DAN utilizes the self-attention mechanism to update the feature vector of each view, effectively reducing the redundant information, and 2) information fusion, in which DAN applies attention mechanism that can save more effective information by considering the correlations among views. Meanwhile, deep network structure can fully consider the correlations to continuously fuse effective information. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we conduct experiments on the public 3D shape datasets: ModelNet40, ModelNet10, and ShapeNetCore55. Experimental results and comparison with state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method. Code is released on https://github.com/RiDang/DANN.

2021 Adaptively Clustering-Driven Learning for Visual Relationship Detection
abstract
Visual relationship detection aims to describe the interactions between pairs of objects, such asperson-ride-bikeandbike-next to-cartriplets. In reality, it is often the case that there exist some groups of strongly correlated relationships, while others are weakly related. Intuitively, the common relationships can be roughly categorized into several types such as geometric (e.g., next to), action (e.g., ride), and so on. However, previous studies ignore the relatedness discovery among multiple relationships, which only lie on a unified space to leverage visual features or statistical dependencies into categories. To tackle this problem, we propose an adaptively clustering-driven network for visual relationship detection, which can implicitly divide the unified relationship space into several subspaces with specific characteristics. Particularly, we propose two novel modules to discover the common distribution space and latent relationship association, respectively, which map pairs of object features into translation subspaces to induce the discriminative relationship clustering. Then, a fused inference is designed to integrate the group-induced representations with the language prior to facilitate the predicate inference. Especially, we design the Frobenius-norm regularization to boost the clustering. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed method is the first supervised framework to realizesubject-predicate-objectrelationship-aware clustering for visual relationship detection. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method can achieve competing performances against the state-of-the-art methods on the Visual Genome dataset. Additional ablation studies further validate its effectiveness.

2021 3D Pose Estimation Based on Reinforce Learning for 2D Image-Based 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel characteristic view selection model (CVSM) to address the 2D image-based 3D object retrieval problem. This work includes two key contributions: 1) we propose a novel reinforcement learning model to estimate the 3D pose based on a 2D image; and 2) we render the pose-specific model to generate a representative angle view for retrieval applications. First, we define state, policy, action and reward functions to train an agent with the reinforcement learning framework, by which the agent can effectively reduce the computational cost of the characteristic view selection and directly obtain the 3D model pose. Second, to resolve the problem of computing similarity in the cross-domain between the virtual 3D model view and the real query image, we project them into the skeleton domain, and the skeleton information can effectively bridge the gap between the image and 3D model view for cross-media retrieval. To demonstrate the performance of our approach, we compare with some classic 3D pose estimation methods using the popular Pascal3D dataset. To demonstrate the performance of our approach in model retrieval, we collect a new dataset that includes pairs of 2D images and 3D objects, where 3D objects are based on the ModelNet40 dataset and 2D images are based on the ImageNet dataset, and we experiment with our method using the SHREC 2018 and SHREC 2019 databases. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method.

2021 M-GCN: Multi-Branch Graph Convolution Network for 2D Image-based on 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
2D image based 3D model retrieval is a challenging research topic in the field of 3D model retrieval. The huge gap between two modalities - 2D image and 3D model, extremely constrains the retrieval performance. In order to handle this problem, we propose a novel multi-branch graph convolution network (M-GCN) to address the 2D image based 3D model retrieval problem. First, we compute the similarity between 2D image and 3D model based on visual information to construct one cross-modalities graph model, which can provide the original relationship between image and 3D model. However, this relationship is not accurate because of the difference of modalities. Thus, the multi-head attention mechanism is employed to generate a set of fully connected edge-weighted graphs, which can predict the hidden relationship between 2D image and 3D model to further strengthen the correlation for the embedding generation of nodes. Finally, we apply the max-pooling operation to fuse the multi-graphs information and generate the fusion embeddings of nodes for retrieval. To validate the performance of our method, we evaluated M-GCN on the MI3DOR dataset, Shrec 2018 track and Shrec 2014 track. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over the state-of-the-art methods.

2021 C-GCN: Correlation Based Graph Convolutional Network for Audio-Video Emotion Recognition
abstract
With the development of both hardware and deep neural network technologies, tremendous improvements have been achieved in the performance of automatic emotion recognition (AER) based on the video data. However, AER is still a challenging task due to subtle expression, abstract concept of emotion and the representation of multi-modal information. Most proposed approaches focus on the multi-modal feature learning and fusion strategy, which pay more attention to the characteristic of a single video and ignore the correlation among the videos. To explore this correlation, in this paper, we propose a novel correlation-based graph convolutional network (C-GCN) for AER, which can comprehensively consider the correlation of the intra-class and inter-class videos for feature learning and information fusion. More specifically, we introduce the graph model to represent the correlation among the videos. This correlated information can help to improve the discrimination of node features in the progress of graph convolutional network. Meanwhile, the multi-head attention mechanism is applied to predict the hidden relationship among the videos, which can strengthen the inter-class correlation to improve the performance of classifiers. The C-GCN is evaluated on the AFEW datasets and eNTERFACE 05 dataset. The final experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over the state-of-the-art methods.

2021 Universal Cross-Domain 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
Recent advances in 3D modeling technologies such as 3D scanning, reconstruction and printing produce an explosive increasing of 3D models, consequently 3D model management becomes urgent to facilitate related applications such as CAD, VR/AR and autonomous driving. However, we usually lack the labels of the recently emerging 3D models and even have no prior knowledge toward the label set relationship between new datasets and existing labeled datasets, which makes the management challenging. In this paper, a universal cross-domain 3D model retrieval framework is proposed for utilizing the labeled 2D images or 3D models to manage unlabeled 3D models with no prior knowledge about label sets. Specifically, a sample-level weighting mechanism is adopted to automatically detect the samples from the common label set for both domains. Then, both the domain-level and class-level alignments are performed for domain adaptation. Finally, the adapted features are used for 3D model retrieval. We conduct experiments on the cross-domain 3D model retrieval dataset NTU-PSB (PSB-NTU) and image-based 3D model retrieval dataset MI3DOR, and the results validate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed method.

2021 MMFN: Multimodal Information Fusion Networks for 3D Model Classification and Retrieval
abstract
In recent years, research into 3D shape recognition in the field of multimedia and computer vision has attracted wide attention. With the rapid development of deep learning, various deep models have achieved state-of-the-art performance based on different representations. There are many modalities for representing a 3D model, such as point cloud, multiview, and panorama view. Deep learning models based on these different modalities have different concerns, and all of them have achieved high performance for 3D shape recognition. However, all of these methods ignore the multimodality information in conditions where the same 3D model is represented by different modalities. Thus, we can obtain a better descriptor by guiding the training to consider these multiple representations. In this article, we propose MMFN, a novel multimodal fusion network for 3D shape recognition that employs correlations between the different modalities to generate a fused descriptor, which is more robust. In particular, we design two novel loss functions to help the model learn the correlation information during training. The first is correlation loss, which focuses on the correlations among different descriptors generated from different structures. This approach reduces the training time and improves the robustness of the fused descriptor of the 3D model. The second is instance loss, which preserves the independence of each modality and utilizes feature differentiation to guide model learning during the training process. More specifically, we use the weighted fusion method, which applies statistical methods to obtain robust descriptors that maximize the advantages of the information from the different modalities. We evaluated the proposed method on the ModelNet40 and ShapeNetCore55 datasets for 3D shape classification and retrieval tasks. The experimental results and comparisons with state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the superiority of our approach.

2021 PGNet: Progressive Feature Guide Learning Network for Three-dimensional Shape Recognition
abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) shape recognition is a popular topic and has potential application value in the field of computer vision. With the recent proliferation of deep learning, various deep learning models have achieved state-of-the-art performance. Among them, multiview-based 3D shape representation has received increased attention in recent years, and related approaches have shown significant improvement in 3D shape recognition. However, these methods focus on feature learning based on the design of the network and ignore the correlation among views. In this article, we propose a novel progressive feature guide learning network (PGNet) that focuses on the correlation among multiple views and integrates multiple modalities for 3D shape recognition. In particular, we propose two information fusion schemes from visual and feature aspects. The visual fusion scheme focuses on the view level and employs the soft-attention model to define the weights of views for visual information fusion. The feature fusion scheme focuses on the feature dimension information and employs the quantified feature as the mask to further optimize the feature. These two schemes jointly construct a PGNet for 3D shape representation. The classic ModelNet40 and ShapeNetCore55 datasets are applied to demonstrate the performance of our approach. The corresponding experiment also demonstrates the superiority of our approach.

2021 Image Captioning with multi-level similarity-guided semantic matching
abstract
Image Captioning is a cross-modal task that needs to automatically generate coherent natural sentences to describe the image contents. Due to the large gap between vision and language modalities, most of the existing methods have the problem of inaccurate semantic matching between images and generated captions. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a novel multi-level similarity-guided semantic matching method for image captioning, which can fuse local and global semantic similarities to learn the latent semantic correlation between images and generated captions. Specifically, we extract the semantic units containing fine-grained semantic information of images and generated captions, respectively. Based on the comparison of the semantic units, we design a local semantic similarity evaluation mechanism. Meanwhile, we employ the CIDEr score to characterize the global semantic similarity. The local and global two-level similarities are finally fused using the reinforcement learning theory, to guide the model optimization to obtain better semantic matching. The quantitative and qualitative experiments on large-scale MSCOCO dataset illustrate the superiority of the proposed method, which can achieve fine-grained semantic matching of images and generated captions.

2021 MV-LFN: Multi-view based local information fusion network for 3D shape recognition
abstract
3D shape recognition is a challenging task due to the difficulty of representing the complex structure of 3D shapes. Recently, the view-based approaches that utilize the multiple views rendered from the shape for visual information extraction and feature aggregation to generate a global shape descriptor , achieved promising performance. However, the view-based approaches commonly ignore the exploration and utilization of local information in the multiple views, which influences the effectiveness of generated features. In this paper, we design a novel Multi-view based Local Information Fusion Network (MV-LFN) for the 3D shape recognition task. The local correlation attention mechanism (LCAM) is introduced to exploit the local correlations in the feature maps for generating a more effective view descriptor. Then, we hierarchically aggregate the multi-view feature maps to generate a shape super matrix (SSM). The local information is effectively extracted and maintained during the multi-view aggregation process, and the discrimination of shape descriptors is significantly improved. We conduct comparative experiments on the ModelNet and ShapeNetCore55 databases. The experimental performances effectively validate the superiority of MV-LFN.

2020 Consistent Domain Structure Learning and Domain Alignment for 2D Image-Based 3D Objects Retrieval
abstract
2D image-based 3D objects retrieval is a new topic for 3D objects retrieval which can be used to manage 3D data with 2D images. The goal is to search some related 3D objects when given a 2D image. The task is challenging due to the large domain gap between 2D images and 3D objects. Therefore, it is essential to consider domain adaptation problems to reduce domain discrepancy. However, most of the existing domain adaptation methods only utilize the semantic information from the source domain to predict labels in the target domain and neglect the intrinsic structure of the target domain. In this paper, we propose a domain alignment framework with consistent domain structure learning to reduce the large gap between 2D images and 3D objects. The domain structure learning module makes use of both the semantic information from the source domain and the intrinsic structure of the target domain, which provides more reliable predicted labels to the domain alignment module to better align the conditional distribution. We conducted experiments on two public datasets, MI3DOR and MI3DOR-2, and the experimental results demonstrate the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

2020 Hierarchical Instance Feature Alignment for 2D Image-Based 3D Shape Retrieval
abstract
2D image-based 3D shape retrieval has become a hot research topic since its wide industrial applications and academic significance. However, existing view-based 3D shape retrieval methods are restricted by two settings, 1) learn the common-class features while neglecting the instance visual characteristics, 2) narrow the global domain variations while ignoring the local semantic variations in each category. To overcome these problems, we propose a novel hierarchical instance feature alignment (HIFA) method for this task. HIFA consists of two modules, cross-modal instance feature learning and hierarchical instance feature alignment. Specifically, we first use CNN to extract both 2D image and multi-view features. Then, we maximize the mutual information between the input data and the high-level feature to preserve as much as visual characteristics of an individual instance. To mix up the features in two domains, we enforce feature alignment considering both global domain and local semantic levels. By narrowing the global domain variations we impose the identical large norm restriction on both 2D and 3D feature-norm expectations to facilitate more transferable possibility. By narrowing the local variations we propose to minimize the distance between two centroids of the same class from different domains to obtain semantic consistency. Extensive experiments on two popular and novel datasets, MI3DOR and MI3DOR-2, validate the superiority of HIFA for 2D image-based 3D shape retrieval task.

2020 Multi-graph Convolutional Network for Unsupervised 3D Shape Retrieval
abstract
3D shape retrieval has attracted much research attention due to its wide applications in the fields of computer vision and multimedia. Various approaches have been proposed in recent years for learning 3D shape descriptor from different modalities. The existing works contain the following disadvantages: 1) the vast majority methods rely on the large scale of training data with clear category information; 2) many approaches focus on the fusion of multi-modal information but ignore the guidance of correlations among different modalities for shape representation learning; 3) many methods pay attention to the structural feature learning of 3D shape but ignore the guidance of structural similarity between every two shapes. To solve these problems, we propose a novel multi-graph network (MGN) for unsupervised 3D shape retrieval, which utilizes the correlations among modalities and structural similarity between two models to guide the shape representation learning process without category information. More specifically, we propose two novel loss functions: auto-correlation loss and cross-correlation loss. The auto-correlation loss utilizes information from different modalities to increase the discrimination of shape descriptor. The cross-correlation loss utilizes the structural similarity between two models to strengthen the intra-class similarity and increase the inter-class distinction. Finally, an effective similarity measurement is designed for the shape retrieval task. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we conduct experiments on the ModelNet dataset. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, and significant improvements have been achieved compared with state-of-the-art methods.

2020 Emotion-Based End-to-End Matching Between Image and Music in Valence-Arousal Space
abstract
Both images and music can convey rich semantics and are widely used to induce specific emotions. Matching images and music with similar emotions might help to make emotion perceptions more vivid and stronger. Existing emotion-based image and music matching methods either employ limited categorical emotion states which cannot well reflect the complexity and subtlety of emotions, or train the matching model using an impractical multi-stage pipeline. In this paper, we study end-to-end matching between image and music based on emotions in the continuous valence-arousal (VA) space. First, we construct a large-scale dataset, termed Image-Music-Emotion-Matching-Net (IMEMNet), with over 140K image-music pairs. Second, we propose cross-modal deep continuous metric learning (CDCML) to learn a shared latent embedding space which preserves the cross-modal similarity relationship in the continuous matching space. Finally, we refine the embedding space by further preserving the single-modal emotion relationship in the VA spaces of both images and music. The metric learning in the embedding space and task regression in the label space are jointly optimized for both cross-modal matching and single-modal VA prediction. The extensive experiments conducted on IMEMNet demonstrate the superiority of CDCML for emotion-based image and music matching as compared to the state-of-the-art approaches.

2020 Semantic Consistency Guided Instance Feature Alignment for 2D Image-Based 3D Shape Retrieval
abstract
2D image-based 3D shape retrieval (2D-to-3D) investigates the problem of matching the relevant 3D shapes from gallery dataset when given a query image. Recently, adversarial training and environmental style transfer learning have been successful applied to this task and achieved state-of-the-art performance. However, there still exist two problems. First, previous works only concentrate on the connection between the label and representation, where the unique visual characteristics of each instance are paid less attention. Second, the confused features or the transformed images can only cheat the discriminator but can not guarantee the semantic consistency. In another words, features of 2D desk may be mapped nearby the features of 3D chair. In this paper, we propose a novel semantic consistency guided instance feature alignment network (SC-IFA) to address these limitations. SC-IFA mainly consists of two parts, instance visual feature extraction and cross-domain instance feature adaptation. For the first module, unlike previous methods, which merely employ 2D CNN to extract the feature, we additionally maximize the mutual information between the input and feature to enhance the capability of feature representation for each instance. For the second module, we first introduce the margin disparity discrepancy model to mix up the cross-domain features in an adversarial training way. Then, we design two feature translators to transform the feature from one domain to another domain, and impose the translation loss and correlation loss on the transformed features to preserve the semantic consistency. Extensive experimental results on two benchmarks, MI3DOR and MI3DOR-2, verify SC-IFA is superior to the state-of-the-art methods.

2020 Pairwise View Weighted Graph Network for View-based 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
View-based 3D model retrieval has become an important task in both computer vision and machine learning domains. Although deep learning methods have achieved excellent performances on view-based 3D model retrieval, the intrinsic correlation and the degree of view discrimination among multiple views in a 3D model have not been effectively exploited. To obtain a more efficient feature descriptor for 3D model retrieval, in this work, we propose the pairwise view weighted graph network (abbreviated PVWGN) for view-based 3D model retrieval where non-local graph layers are embedded into the network architecture to automatically mine the intrinsic relationship among multiple views of a 3D model. Furthermore, the view weighted layer is employed in the PVWGN to adaptively assign the weight to each view according to its aggregation information. In addition, the pairwise discrimination loss function is designed to improve the feature discrimination of the 3D model. Most importantly, these three issues are integrated into a unified framework. Extensive experimental results on the ModelNet40 and ModelNet10 3D model retrieval datasets show that PVWGN can outperform all state-of-the-art methods on the 3D model retrieval task with mAPs of 93.2% and 96.2%, respectively.

2020 Joint Heterogeneous Feature Learning and Distribution Alignment for 2D Image-Based 3D Object Retrieval
abstract
2D image-based 3D object retrieval is a novel but challenging task for 3D object retrieval. In this paper, we propose a 2D image-based 3D object retrieval method via joint heterogeneous feature learning and distribution alignment. Specifically, we propose to learn a mapping function in the Grassmann manifold to reduce the divergence of heterogeneous features of 2D images and 3D objects. We further employ the data distribution alignment method to adaptively integrate both marginal and conditional distributions. We embed both terms into the objective function to learn a domain-invariant classifier based on structural risk minimization. The output domain-invariant features of 2D images and 3D objects can be utilized for 2D image-based 3D object retrieval. Since there is lack of large-scale dataset for the evaluation of this task, we build two new datasets, MI3DOR and MI3DOR-2. We compare the proposed method against the representative methods for domain adaption and explore the influence of different components of the objective functions and key parameter. Comparison experiments show the superiority of this method.

2020 Sequential Saliency Guided Deep Neural Network for Joint Mitosis Identification and Localization in Time-Lapse Phase Contrast Microscopy Images
abstract
The analysis of cell mitotic behavior plays important role in many biomedical research and medical diagnostic applications. To improve the accuracy of mitosis detection in automated analysis systems, this paper proposes the sequential saliency guided deep neural network (SSG-DNN) to jointly identify and localize mitotic events in time-lapse phase contrast microscopy images. It consists of three key modules. First, the module of visual context learning extracts static visual feature and dynamic visual transition within individual volumetric cell regions. Secondly, with these information, the module of sequential saliency modeling aims to discover the saliency distribution over all successive frames in each volumetric region. Finally, the module of sequence structure modeling can leverage both visual context and saliency distribution for mitosis identification and localization. SSG-DNN can jointly realize visual feature learning and sequential structure modeling in the end-to-end framework. Moreover, the proposed method is independent of complicated preconditioning methods for mitotic candidate extraction and can be applied for mitosis detection in one-shot manner. To our knowledge, it is the first weakly supervised work to realize joint mitosis identification and localization only with sequence-wise labels. In our experiments, we evaluate its performances of both tasks on the popular C3H10 dataset and a novel and large-scale dataset, C2C12-16, which contains much more mitotic events and is more challenging owing to diverse cell culture conditions. Experimental results can demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

2020 Multi-Level Policy and Reward-Based Deep Reinforcement Learning Framework for Image Captioning
abstract
Image captioning is one of the most challenging tasks in AI because it requires an understanding of both complex visuals and natural language. Because image captioning is essentially a sequential prediction task, recent advances in image captioning have used reinforcement learning (RL) to better explore the dynamics of word-by-word generation. However, the existing RL-based image captioning methods rely primarily on a single policy network and reward function-an approach that is not well matched to the multi-level (word and sentence) and multi-modal (vision and language) nature of the task. To solve this problem, we propose a novel multi-level policy and reward RL framework for image captioning that can be easily integrated with RNN-based captioning models, language metrics, or visual-semantic functions for optimization. Specifically, the proposed framework includes two modules: 1) a multi-level policy network that jointly updates the word- and sentence-level policies for word generation; and 2) a multi-level reward function that collaboratively leverages both a vision-language reward and a language-language reward to guide the policy. Furthermore, we propose a guidance term to bridge the policy and the reward for RL optimization. The extensive experiments on the MSCOCO and Flickr30k datasets and the analyses show that the proposed framework achieves competitive performances on a variety of evaluation metrics. In addition, we conduct ablation studies on multiple variants of the proposed framework and explore several representative image captioning models and metrics for the word-level policy network and the language-language reward function to evaluate the generalization ability of the proposed framework.

2020 Multi-View Saliency Guided Deep Neural Network for 3-D Object Retrieval and Classification
abstract
In this paper, we propose the multi-view saliency guided deep neural network (MVSG-DNN) for 3D object retrieval and classification. This method mainly consists of three key modules. First, the module of model projection rendering is employed to capture the multiple views of one 3D object. Second, the module of visual context learning applies the basic Convolutional Neural Networks for visual feature extraction of individual views and then employs the saliency LSTM to adaptively select the representative views based on multi-view context. Finally, with these information, the module of multi-view representation learning can generate the compile 3D object descriptors with the designed classification LSTM for 3D object retrieval and classification. The proposed MVSG-DNN has two main contributions: 1) It can jointly realize the selection of representative views and the similarity measure by fully exploiting multi-view context; 2) It can discover the discriminative structure of multi-view sequence without constraints of specific camera settings. Consequently, it can support flexible 3D object retrieval and classification for real applications by avoiding the required camera settings. Extensive comparison experiments on ModelNet10, ModelNet40, and ShapeNetCore55 demonstrate the superiority of MVSG-DNN against the state-of-art methods.

2020 HGAN: Holistic Generative Adversarial Networks for Two-dimensional Image-based Three-dimensional Object Retrieval
abstract
In this article, we propose a novel method to address the two-dimensional (2D) image-based 3D object retrieval problem. First, we extract a set of virtual views to represent each 3D object. Then, a soft-attention model is utilized to find the weight of each view to select one characteristic view for each 3D object. Second, we propose a novel Holistic Generative Adversarial Network (HGAN) to solve the cross-domain feature representation problem and make the feature space of virtual characteristic view more inclined to the feature space of the real picture. This will effectively mitigate the distribution discrepancies across the 2D image domains and 3D object domains. Finally, we utilize the generative model of the HGAN to obtain the “virtual real image” of each 3D object and make the characteristic view of the 3D object and real picture possess the same feature space for retrieval. To demonstrate the performance of our approach, We established a new dataset that includes pairs of 2D images and 3D objects, where the 3D objects are based on the ModelNet40 dataset. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over the state-of-the-art methods.

2020 Multi-View Graph Matching for 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
3D model retrieval has been widely utilized in numerous domains, such as computer-aided design, digital entertainment, and virtual reality. Recently, many graph-based methods have been proposed to address this task by using multi-view information of 3D models. However, these methods are always constrained by many-to-many graph matching for the similarity measure between pairwise models. In this article, we propose a multi-view graph matching method (MVGM) for 3D model retrieval. The proposed method can decompose the complicated multi-view graph-based similarity measure into multiple single-view graph-based similarity measures and fusion. First, we present the method for single-view graph generation, and we further propose the novel method for the similarity measure in a single-view graph by leveraging both node-wise context and model-wise context. Then, we propose multi-view fusion with diffusion, which can collaboratively integrate multiple single-view similarities w.r.t. different viewpoints and adaptively learn their weights, to compute the multi-view similarity between pairwise models. In this way, the proposed method can avoid the difficulty in the definition and computation of the traditional high-order graph. Moreover, this method is unsupervised and does not require a large-scale 3D dataset for model learning. We conduct evaluations on four popular and challenging datasets. The extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed method compared against the state of the art. In particular, this unsupervised method can achieve competitive performances against the most recent supervised and deep learning method.

2019 Characteristic Views Extraction Modal Based-on Deep Reinforcement Learning for 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
In this paper, we propose an effective framework for view-based 3D model retrieval based on reinforcement learning, which aims to extract the most important views from the view set of 3D models for model representation. Since the choice of the representative views can be treated as a Markov decision process (MDP), we model the view extraction as a progressive process through deep reinforcement learning. First, the visual tool developed by OpenGL is utilized to extract 12 rendered pictures in order from a 3D model. Second, these 12 views are fed into the network as a view-based sequence, and then we utilize characteristic views extraction model to extract the most informative views of the 3D model. Finally, a similarity measure between 3D models is performed to complete the last step pf the model retrieval problem. In the experiment section, the classic ModelNet40 is utilized to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Extensive experiments and corresponding experimental results have demonstrated the superiority of our approach.

2019 MMJN: Multi-Modal Joint Networks for 3D Shape Recognition
abstract
3D shape recognition has attracted wide research attention in the field of multimedia and computer vision. With the recent advance of deep learning, various deep models with different representations have achieved the state-of-the-art performances. Among them, many modalities are proposed to represent 3D model, such as point cloud, multi-view, and PANORAMA-view. Based on these representations, many corresponding deep models have shown significant performances on 3D shape recognition. However, few work to considers utilizing the fusion information of multi-modal for 3D shape recognition. Since these different modalities represent the same 3D model, they should guide each other to get a better feature representation. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-modal joint network (MMJN) for 3D shape recognition, which can consider the correlation between two different modalities to extract the robust feature vector. More specifically, we propose a novel correlation loss which can utilize the correlation between different features extracted by different modality networks to increase the robustness of the feature representation. Finally, we utilize the late fusion method to fuse the multi-modal information for 3D model representation and recognition. Here, we define the weight of different modalities features based on the statistic method and utilize the advantages of different modalities to generate more robust feature. We evaluated the proposed method on the ModelNet40 dataset for 3D shape classification and retrieval tasks. Experimental results and comparisons with the state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the superiority of our approach.

2019 Dual-level Embedding Alignment Network for 2D Image-Based 3D Object Retrieval
abstract
Recent advances in 3D modeling software and 3D capture devices contribute to the availability of large-scale 3D objects. However, manually labelled large-scale 3D object dataset is still too expensive to build in practice. An intuitive idea is to transfer the knowledge from label-rich 2D images (source domain) to unlabelled 3D objects (target domain) to facilitate 3D big data management. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised dual-level embedding alignment (DLEA) network for a new task, 2D image-based 3D object retrieval. It mainly consists of two modules, visual feature learning and cross-domain feature adaptation, for jointly optimizing. The first module transforms individual 3D object into a set of multi-view images and utilizes 2D CNNs to extract visual features of both multi-view image sets and the source 2D images. For multi-view fusion by reducing the distribution divergence between both domains, we propose a cross-domain view-wise attention mechanism to adaptively compute the weights of individual views and aggregate them into a compact descriptor to narrow the gap between source and target domains. With the visual representation of both domains, the module of cross-domain feature adaptation aims to enforce the domain-level and class-level embedding alignment of cross-domain feature spaces. For domain-level embedding alignment, we train a discriminator to align the global distribution statistics of both spaces. For class-level embedding alignment, we map the features in the same class but from different domains nearby through aligning the centroid of each class from both domains. To our knowledge, this is the first unsupervised work to jointly realize cross-domain feature learning and distribution alignment in an end-to-end manner for this new task. Moreover, we constructed two new datasets, MI3DOR and MI3DOR-2, to advocate the research on this topic. Extensive comparison experiments can demonstrate the superiority of DLEA against the state-of-art methods.

2019 3D Object Retrieval Based on Multi-View Latent Variable Model
abstract
View-based 3D object retrieval, in which multiple views are used for representation and retrieval, has attracted increasing attention due to its great flexibility. In this paper, we propose a discriminative multi-view latent variable model (MVLVM) for this task. Specifically, we design MVLVM to have an undirected graph structure in which the view set of a given 3D object is treated as the observations from which to discover the latent visual and spatial contexts. Then, we detail the learning and inference process of MVLVM for view-based 3D object retrieval. The proposed MVLVM has the following beneficial features: 1) it jointly learns visual and spatial contexts for 3D object modelling and 2) it avoids the difficulty of representative view extraction for model representation. Consequently, it can support flexible 3D model retrieval for real applications by avoiding camera array constraints, which severely constrain traditional methods. We report extensive experiments conducted on single-modal datasets (the NTU and ITI datasets) and a multi-modal dataset (MVRED-RGB and MVRED-Depth). These comparative experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

2019 Hyper-Clique Graph Matching and Applications
abstract
This paper proposes a method for hyper-clique graph (HCG) generation, which can be considered an extension of classical graphs and hyper-graphs in which the node is replaced with the clique (a set of neighboring nodes in a specific feature space) and the hyper-edge linking multiple nodes is replaced with the hyper-edge linking multiple cliques. In addition, we propose the HCG matching method by preserving global and local structures. Specifically, we embed the clique relations of arbitrary orders in a high-order similarity tensor in a recursive manner. Then, we formulate the objective function of HCG matching with respect to two latent variables: the latent clique structure information in the original graph and the similarity measure of clique sets from pairwise HCGs. Since the objective function is not jointly convex with respect to both latent variables, we decompose it into two consecutive measurements for optimization: 1) a clique-to-clique similarity measurement by preserving local unary and pairwise correspondences and 2) a graph-to-graph similarity measurement by preserving global clique-to-clique correspondence. We suitably adopt the affinity-preserving reweighted random walks to optimize the objective function. We extensively evaluate the HCG matching performance on multiple applications: 1) we evaluate the robustness of HCG with respect to the deformation noise, the number of outliers, and the edge density on synthetic data and explore the effects of both the clique order and hyper-edge order on performance; 2) we explore HCG matching for feature point matching on multiple image data sets (CMU house sequence, Caltech+MSRC, and Car+Motor); and 3) we explore HCG matching for multi-view object retrieval, which is a much more challenging task since multi-view objects contain significant variations of illumination, viewpoint, and so on, using popular data sets (MV-RED and NTU). A comparison against the state-of-the-art methods demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed method.

2019 Dual-Stream Recurrent Neural Network for Video Captioning
abstract
Recent progress in using recurrent neural networks (RNNs) for video description has attracted an increasing interest, due to its capability to encode a sequence of frames for caption generation. While existing methods have studied various features (e.g., CNN, 3D CNN, and semantic attributes) for visual encoding, the representation and fusion of heterogeneous information from multi-modal spaces have not fully explored. Consider that different modalities are often asynchronous, frame-level multi-modal fusion (e.g., concatenation and linear fusion) will negatively influence each modality. In this paper, we propose a dual-stream RNN (DS-RNN) framework to jointly discover and integrate the hidden states of both visual and semantic streams for video caption generation. First, an encoding RNN is used for each stream to flexibly exploit the hidden states of respective modality. Specifically, we proposed an attentive multi-grained encoder module to enhance the local feature learning with global semantics feature. Then, a dual-stream decoder is deployed to integrate the asynchronous yet complementary sequential hidden states from both streams for caption generation. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets, namely, MSVD, MSR-VTT, and MPII-MD, show that DS-RNN achieves competitive performance against the state-of-the-art. Additional ablation studies were conducted on various variants of the proposed DS-RNN.

2019 Multi-Domain and Multi-Task Learning for Human Action Recognition
abstract
Domain-invariant (view-invariant & modalityinvariant) feature representation is essential for human action recognition. Moreover, given a discriminative visual representation, it is critical to discover the latent correlations among multiple actions in order to facilitate action modeling. To address these problems, we propose a multi-domain & multi-task learning (MDMTL) method to (1) extract domain-invariant information for multi-view and multi-modal action representation and (2) explore the relatedness among multiple action categories. Specifically, we present a sparse transfer learning-based method to co-embed multi-domain (multi-view & multi-modality) data into a single common space for discriminative feature learning. Additionally, visual feature learning is incorporated into the multitask learning framework, with the Frobenius-norm regularization term and the sparse constraint term, for joint task modeling and task relatedness-induced feature learning. To the best of our knowledge, MDMTL is the first supervised framework to jointly realize domain-invariant feature learning and task modeling for multi-domain action recognition. Experiments conducted on the INRIA Xmas Motion Acquisition Sequences (IXMAS) dataset, the MSR Daily Activity 3D (DailyActivity3D) dataset, and the Multi-modal & Multi-view & Interactive (M2I) dataset, which is the most recent and largest multi-view and multi-model action recognition dataset, demonstrate the superiority of MDMTL over the state-of-the-art approaches.

2019 Multi-modal Correlated Network for emotion recognition in speech
abstract
With the growing demand of automatic emotion recognition system, emotion recognition is becoming more and more crucial for human–computer interaction (HCI) research. Recently, there is a continuous improvement in the performance of automatic emotion recognition due to the development of both hardware and deep learning methods. However, because of the abstract concept and multiple expressions of emotion, automatic emotion recognition is still a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-modal Correlated Network for emotion recognition aiming at exploiting the information from both audio and visual channels to achieve more robust and accurate detection. In the proposed method, the audio signals and visual signals are first preprocessed for the feature extraction. After preprocessing, we obtain the Mel-spectrograms, which can be treated as images, and the representative frames from visual segments. Then the Mel-spectrograms are fed to the convolutional neural network (CNN) to get the audio features and the representative frames are fed to the CNN and LSTM to get features. Specially, we employ the triplet loss to increase the differentiation of inter-class. Meanwhile, we propose a novel correlated loss to reduce the differentiation of intra-class. Finally, we apply the feature fusion method to fuse the audio and visual feature for emotion recognition classification. The experimental result on AEFW dataset demonstrates the correlation information of multiple modals is crucial for automatic emotion recognition and the proposed method can achieve the state-of-the-art performance on the classification task .

2018 Cross-Domain 3D Model Retrieval via Visual Domain Adaption
abstract
Recent advances in 3D capturing devices and 3D modeling software have led to extensive and diverse 3D datasets, which usually have different distributions. Cross-domain 3D model retrieval is becoming an important but challenging task. However, existing works mainly focus on 3D model retrieval in a closed dataset, which seriously constrain their implementation for real applications. To address this problem, we propose a novel crossdomain 3D model retrieval method by visual domain adaptation. This method can inherit the advantage of deep learning to learn multi-view visual features in the data-driven manner for 3D model representation. Moreover, it can reduce the domain divergence by exploiting both domainshared and domain-specific features of different domains. Consequently, it can augment the discrimination of visual descriptors for cross-domain similarity measure. Extensive experiments on two popular datasets, under three designed cross-domain scenarios, demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing against the state-of-the-art methods. Especially, the proposed method can significantly outperform the most recent method for cross-domain 3D model retrieval and the champion of Shrec’16 Large-Scale 3D Shape Retrieval from ShapeNet Core55.

2018 Multi-Level Policy and Reward Reinforcement Learning for Image Captioning
abstract
Image captioning is one of the most challenging hallmark of AI, due to its complexity in visual and natural language understanding. As it is essentially a sequential prediction task, recent advances in image captioning use Reinforcement Learning (RL) to better explore the dynamics of word-by-word generation. However, existing RL-based image captioning methods mainly rely on a single policy network and reward function that does not well fit the multi-level (word and sentence) and multi-modal (vision and language) nature of the task. To this end, we propose a novel multi-level policy and reward RL framework for image captioning. It contains two modules: 1) Multi-Level Policy Network that can adaptively fuse the word-level policy and the sentence-level policy for the word generation; and 2) Multi-Level Reward Function that collaboratively leverages both vision-language reward and language-language reward to guide the policy. Further, we propose a guidance term to bridge the policy and the reward for RL optimization. Extensive experiments and analysis on MSCOCO and Flickr30k show that the proposed framework can achieve competing performances with respect to different evaluation metrics.

2018 Attention-in-Attention Networks for Surveillance Video Understanding in Internet of Things
abstract
In this paper, we propose an approach to generate the comprehensive video interpretation for the surveillance video understanding in Internet of Things. The key problem of many visual learning tasks is to adaptively select and fuse diverse and complimentary features for video representation. We design the attention-in-attention (AIA) network to hierarchically explore the attention fusion in an end-to-end manner, and demonstrate the value of this model on the multievent recognition and video captioning challenges. Particularly, it consists of multiple encoder attention modules (EAMs) and a fusion attention module (FAM). Each EAM aims to highlight the space-specific features by selecting the most salient visual features or semantic attributes and averages them into one attentive feature. The FAM can suppress or enhance the activation of multispace attentive features and adaptively co-embed them for comprehensive video representation. Then, one long short-term memory unit decodes the video representations to generate multiple event labels or video captions. This architecture is capable of: 1) adaptively learning the salient space-specific feature representation and 2) co-embedding multispace attentive features into one space for feature fusion. Experiments conducted on the surveillance video dataset (concurrent event dataset) and the popular video captioning datasets (Microsoft Research Video Description Corpus and MSR-Video to Text). It shows that the proposed AIA can achieve competitive performances against the state of the arts.

2018 View-Based 3-D Model Retrieval: A Benchmark
abstract
View-based 3-D model retrieval is one of the most important techniques in numerous applications of computer vision. While many methods have been proposed in recent years, to the best of our knowledge, there is no benchmark to evaluate the state-of-the-art methods. To tackle this problem, we systematically investigate and evaluate the related methods by: 1) proposing a clique graph-based method and 2) reimplementing six representative methods. Moreover, we concurrently evaluate both hand-crafted visual features and deep features on four popular datasets (NTU60, NTU216, PSB, and ETH) and one challenging real-world multiview model dataset (MV-RED) prepared by our group with various evaluation criteria to understand how these algorithms perform. By quantitatively analyzing the performances, we discover the graph matching-based method with deep features, especially the clique graph matching algorithm with convolutional neural networks features, can usually outperform the others. We further discuss the future research directions in this field.

2017 Hierarchical Clustering Multi-Task Learning for Joint Human Action Grouping and Recognition
abstract
This paper proposes a hierarchical clustering multi-task learning (HC-MTL) method for joint human action grouping and recognition. Specifically, we formulate the objective function into the group-wise least square loss regularized by low rank and sparsity with respect to two latent variables, model parameters and grouping information, for joint optimization. To handle this non-convex optimization, we decompose it into two sub-tasks, multi-task learning and task relatedness discovery. First, we convert this non-convex objective function into the convex formulation by fixing the latent grouping information. This new objective function focuses on multi-task learning by strengthening the shared-action relationship and action-specific feature learning. Second, we leverage the learned model parameters for the task relatedness measure and clustering. In this way, HC-MTL can attain both optimal action models and group discovery by alternating iteratively. The proposed method is validated on three kinds of challenging datasets, including six realistic action datasets (Hollywood2, YouTube, UCF Sports, UCF50, HMDB51 & UCF101), two constrained datasets (KTH & TJU), and two multi-view datasets (MV-TJU & IXMAS). The extensive experimental results show that: 1) HC-MTL can produce competing performances to the state of the arts for action recognition and grouping; 2) HC-MTL can overcome the difficulty in heuristic action grouping simply based on human knowledge; 3) HC-MTL can avoid the possible inconsistency between the subjective action grouping depending on human knowledge and objective action grouping based on the feature subspace distributions of multiple actions. Comparison with the popular clustered multi-task learning further reveals that the discovered latent relatedness by HC-MTL aids inducing the group-wise multi-task learning and boosts the performance. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first work that breaks the assumption that all actions are either independent for individual learning or correlated for joint modeling and proposes HC-MTL for automated, joint action grouping and modeling.

2017 Modeling Temporal Information of Mitotic for Mitotic Event Detection
abstract
Due to the enormous potential and influence that stem cells may have in regenerative medicine, there has been a rapidly growing interest in developing tools to analyze and characterize the behaviors of these cells in vitro. Among these behaviors, mitosis, or cell division, is very important because stem cells proliferate and renew themselves through mitosis. However, current automated systems for mitosis detection often require traditional computer vision technology and machine learning methods; automated mitosis detection and recognition are difficult to achieve and mainly rely on manual annotation. In this paper, we proposed an effective method to capture video-wide temporal information for automated mitosis detection and recognition, which is a nondestructive imaging modality, thereby allowing continuous monitoring of cells in culture. In this approach, we postulate that a function capable of ordering the frames of a video temporally well captures the evolution of the appearance within the video. We learn such ranking functions per video via a ranking machine and use the parameters of these functions as a new video representation. Here, we utilized the CNN model (VGG-16) and some classic low-level feature extraction methods (HOG, SIFT, and GIST) to extract low-level features for each frame. The proposed method is easy to interpret and implement, fast to compute and effective in recognizing mitosis events. In a comparison experiment, our approach significantly outperformed previous approaches in terms of both detection accuracy and computational efficiency. The data that we validate the proposed method with includes C3H10 mesenchymal and C2C12 myoblastic stem cell populations. Our approach achieves an F-score of 95.8 percent on the C2C12 dataset and an F-score of 95.3 percent on the C3H10 dataset. The results on both datasets outperform traditional mitosis recognition methods based on probability models. These experiments all demonstrate the significance of our approach.

2017 Benchmarking a Multimodal and Multiview and Interactive Dataset for Human Action Recognition
abstract
Human action recognition is an active research area in both computer vision and machine learning communities. In the past decades, the machine learning problem has evolved from conventional single-view learning problem, to cross-view learning, cross-domain learning and multitask learning, where a large number of algorithms have been proposed in the literature. Despite having large number of action recognition datasets, most of them are designed for a subset of the four learning problems, where the comparisons between algorithms can further limited by variances within datasets, experimental configurations, and other factors. To the best of our knowledge, there exists no dataset that allows concurrent analysis on the four learning problems. In this paper, we introduce a novel multimodal and multiview and interactive (M2I) dataset, which is designed for the evaluation of human action recognition methods under all four scenarios. This dataset consists of 1760 action samples from 22 action categories, including nine person-person interactive actions and 13 person-object interactive actions. We systematically benchmark state-of-the-art approaches on M2I dataset on all four learning problems. Overall, we evaluated 13 approaches with nine popular feature and descriptor combinations. Our comprehensive analysis demonstrates that M2I dataset is challenging due to significant intraclass and view variations, and multiple similar action categories, as well as provides solid foundation for the evaluation of existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

2017 Multi-Grained Random Fields for Mitosis Identification in Time-Lapse Phase Contrast Microscopy Image Sequences
abstract
This paper proposes a multi-grained random fields (MGRFs) model for mitosis identification. To deal with the difficulty in hidden state discovery and sequential structure modeling in mitosis sequences only containing gradual visual pattern changes, we design the graphical structure to transform individual sequence into a set of coarse-to-fine grained sequencesconveying diverse temporal dynamics. Furthermore, we propose the corresponding probabilistic model for joint temporal learning and feature learning. To deal with the non-convex formulation of MGRF, we decomposemodel training into two sub-tasks, layer-wise sequential learning of both temporal dynamics and visual feature and new layer generation by graph-based sequential grouping, and optimize the model by alternating between them iteratively. The proposed method is validated on very challenging mitosis data set of C3H10T1/2 and C2C12 stem cells. Extensive comparison experiments demonstrate its superiority to the state of the arts.

2016 Multi-Modal Clique-Graph Matching for View-Based 3D Model Retrieval
abstract
Multi-view matching is an important but a challenging task in view-based 3D model retrieval. To address this challenge, we propose an original multi-modal clique graph (MCG) matching method in this paper. We systematically present a method for MCG generation that is composed of cliques, which consist of neighbor nodes in multi-modal feature space and hyper-edges that link pairwise cliques. Moreover, we propose an image set-based clique/edgewise similarity measure to address the issue of the set-to-set distance measure, which is the core problem in MCG matching. The proposed MCG provides the following benefits: 1) preserves the local and global attributes of a graph with the designed structure; 2) eliminates redundant and noisy information by strengthening inliers while suppressing outliers; and 3) avoids the difficulty of defining high-order attributes and solving hyper-graph matching. We validate the MCG-based 3D model retrieval using three popular single-modal data sets and one novel multi-modal data set. Extensive experiments show the superiority of the proposed method through comparisons. Moreover, we contribute a novel real-world 3D object data set, the multi-view RGB-D object data set. To the best of our knowledge, it is the largest real-world 3D object data set containing multi-modal and multi-view information.

2015 Clique-graph matching by preserving global & local structure
abstract
This paper originally proposes the clique-graph and further presents a clique-graph matching method by preserving global and local structures. Especially, we formulate the objective function of clique-graph matching with respective to two latent variables, the clique information in the original graph and the pairwise clique correspondence constrained by the one-to-one matching. Since the objective function is not jointly convex to both latent variables, we decompose it into two consecutive steps for optimization: 1) clique-to-clique similarity measure by preserving local unary and pairwise correspondences; 2) graph-to-graph similarity measure by preserving global clique-to-clique correspondence. Extensive experiments on the synthetic data and real images show that the proposed method can outperform representative methods especially when both noise and outliers exist.

2015 Multi-modal & Multi-view & Interactive Benchmark Dataset for Human Action Recognition
abstract
Human action recognition is one of the most active research areas in both computer vision and machine learning communities. Several methods for human action recognition have been proposed in the literature and promising results have been achieved on the popular datasets. However, the comparison of existing methods is often limited given the different datasets, experimental settings, feature representations, and so on. In particularly, there are no human action dataset that allow concurrent analysis on three popular scenarios, namely single view, cross view, and cross domain. In this paper, we introduce a Multi-modal & Multi-view & Interactive (M2I) dataset, which is designed for the evaluation of the performances of human action recognition under multi-view scenario. This dataset consists of 1760 action samples, including 9 person-person interaction actions and 13 person-object interaction actions. Moreover, we respectively evaluate three representative methods for the single-view, cross-view, and cross domain human action recognition on this dataset with the proposed evaluation protocol. It is experimentally demonstrated that this dataset is extremely challenging due to large intraclass variation, multiple similar actions, significant view difference. This benchmark can provide solid basis for the evaluation of this task and will benefit advancing related computer vision and machine learning research topics.

2015 Semantic-Based Location Recommendation With Multimodal Venue Semantics
abstract
In recent years, we have witnessed a flourishing of location -based social networks. A well-formed representation of location knowledge is desired to cater to the need of location sensing, browsing, navigation and querying. In this paper, we aim to study the semantics of point-of-interest (POI) by exploiting the abundant heterogeneous user generated content (UGC) from different social networks. Our idea is to explore the text descriptions, photos, user check-in patterns, and venue context for location semantic similarity measurement. We argue that the venue semantics play an important role in user check-in behavior. Based on this argument, a unified POI recommendation algorithm is proposed by incorporating venue semantics as a regularizer. In addition to deriving user preference based on user-venue check-in information, we place special emphasis on location semantic similarity. Finally, we conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation of location semantic similarity and location recommendation over a real world dataset collected from Foursquare and Instagram. Experimental results show that the UGC information can well characterize the venue semantics, which help to improve the recommendation performance.

2014 Multi-view action recognition by cross-domain learning
abstract
This paper proposes a novel multi-view human action recognition method by discovering and sharing common knowledge among different video sets captured in multiple viewpoints. To our knowledge, we are the first to treat a specific view as target domain and the others as source domains and consequently formulate the multi-view action recognition into the cross-domain learning framework. First, the classic bag-of-visual word framework is implemented for visual feature extraction in individual viewpoints. Then, we propose a cross-domain learning method with block-wise weighted kernel function matrix to highlight the saliency components and consequently augment the discriminative ability of the model. Extensive experiments are implemented on IXMAS, the popular multi-view action dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can consistently outperform the state of the arts.

2012 Multiple Person Tracking by Spatiotemporal Tracklet Association
abstract
In the field of video surveillance, multiple object tracking is a challenging problem in the real application. In this paper, we propose a multiple object tracking method by spatiotemporal tracklet association. Firstly, reliable tracklets, the fragments of the entire trajectory of individual object movement, are generated by frame-wise association between object localization results in the neighbor frames. To avoid the negative influence of occlusion on reliable tracklet generation, part-based similarity computation is performed. Secondly, the produced tracklets are associated considering both spatial and temporal constrains to output the entire trajectory for individual person. Especially, we formulate the task of spatiotemporal multiple tracklet matching into a Maximum A Posterior (MAP) problem in the form of Markov Chain with spatiotemporal context constraints. The experiment on PETS 2012 dataset demonstrates the superiority of the proposed method.
