| 2024 | A Primer on Near-Field Communications for Next-Generation Multiple AccessabstractMultiple-antenna technologies are advancing toward the development of extremely large aperture arrays and the utilization of extremely high frequencies, driving the progress of next-generation multiple access (NGMA). This evolution is accompanied by the emergence of near-field communications (NFCs), characterized by spherical-wave propagation, which introduces additional range dimensions to the channel and enhances system throughput. In this context, a tutorial-based primer on NFC is presented, emphasizing its applications in multiuser communications and multiple access (MA). The following areas are investigated: 1) the commonly used near-field channel models are reviewed along with their simplifications under various near-field conditions; 2) building upon these models, the information-theoretic capacity limits of NFC-MA are analyzed, including the derivation of the sum-rate capacity and capacity region, and their upper limits for both downlink and uplink scenarios; and 3) a detailed investigation of near-field multiuser beamforming design is presented, offering low-complexity and effective NFC-MA design methodologies in both the spatial and wavenumber (angular) domains. Throughout these investigations, near-field MA is compared with its far-field counterpart to highlight its superiority and flexibility in terms of interference management, thereby laying the groundwork for achieving NGMA. | 2023 | 6G Integrated Sensing and Communication - Sensing Assisted Environmental Reconstruction and CommunicationabstractIntegrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is believed to play a vital role for connected intelligence in 6G. Radio waves can be used to sense surrounding and obtain the environment information. Furthermore, the environmental knowledge provided by sensing improves the accuracy of channel estimation, resulting in better communication throughput. This paper provides a study of sensing assisted environment reconstruction and communication in ISAC scenario. We propose a multi transmission reception points (TRP) sensing architecture based on scatter polygon assumption to improve environment sensing accuracy. Then a polygon trace scheme is introduced to reconstruct communication channel hinging on sensing reconstructed environment. Cm-level sensing accuracy and ns-level communication channel reconstruction can be achieved by 140 GHz indoor measurement campaign validation. | 2023 | Applying Carrier Phase to 5G Positioning with Testbed VerificationabstractWith requests of high accuracy location for indoor industry applications, 5G is studying the technical feasibility of carrier phase positioning to reach centimeter accuracy. In this paper, we propose positioning method, i.e., differential phase difference of arrival (DPDOA), based on the phase measurement. To be specific, a positioning reference unit is introduced to help the calibration of imperfect factors such as initial phase offset, synchronization error and coordinate error between gNBs. Practical field test in an indoor factory is conducted to verify the feasibility of carrier phase positioning. Results show that DPDOA can achieve centimeter level accuracy with over 80% of all the measurements. Peiying Zhu |

| 2023 | Guest Editorial xURLLC in 6G: Next Generation Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency CommunicationsabstractAS ONE of the new communication scenarios in 5th-generation (5G) mobile communication systems, ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) have stringent requirements on latency (around 1 ms) and reliability (up to 99.99999%). Nevertheless, existing 5G URLLC alone cannot fulfill all the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in emerging mission-critical applications like industrial automation, intelligent transportation, telemedicine, Tactile Internet, and Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR). The 6th generation (6G) communication systems need to meet additional requirements on some of the following KPIs in combination with URLLC: high spectrum efficiency (SE)/throughput/energy efficiency (EE)/network availability/security as well as low Age of Information (AoI)/jitter/round-trip delay. These new requirements pose unprecedented challenges in terms of design methodologies and enabling technologies in 6G. To fill the gap between 5G URLLC and the diverse KPI requirements of the neXt generation URLLC (xURLLC), novel methodologies and innovative technologies are much needed. | 2021 | Integrated Sensing and Communication in 6G: the Deterministic Channel Models for THz ImagingabstractIn this paper, the channel modeling for integrated sensing and communication for 6G systems are studied. The channel modeling approaches, requirements, and challenges for communication cases and sensing cases are summarized and discussed. In particular, a 3-D metallic test chart is designed as a reference for studying electromagnetic imaging quality. The deterministic channel modeling approaches, i.e., geometrical optics method, physical optics method, and integral equation method, are introduced to simulate the imaging channel of the designed 3-D test chart. And the electromagnetic inverse scattering method is adopted as an imaging tool. The test is experimentally measured by 140 GHz signal with horn antennas in a chamber. The modulation transfer function (MTF) is applied to assess the imaging quality numerically, and the simulated and measured images are compared, which suggests that the imaging by integral equation is in agreement very well with that of measurement for 3-D test chart, and the geometric optics and physical optics methods can only show the characteristics of 2-D optical imaging. | 2021 | Towards 6G wireless communication networks: vision, enabling technologies, and new paradigm shiftsabstractAbstract The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability, and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-air-ground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Clearly, 6G with additional technical requirements beyond those of 5G will enable faster and further communications to the extent that the boundary between physical and cyber worlds disappears. | 2020 | Challenges and Road Ahead for Wireless Networks to Serve Immersive Human Centric ApplicationsabstractTrue immersion into a remote scenery could not be satisfactory without high definition audiovisual senses and haptic perception of the people and objects in the target environments. We envision the future human-centric applications will evolve with four key trends, namely 1) 360° all-around XR with higher resolution; 2) 3D holographic display integrated with XR; 3) interactive haptic communications; 4) integration of multi-sensory communication. In this paper, we discuss example use cases and typical performance requirements on radio access networks for each of the four trends, hoping to shed a light on the future network design and spectrum utilization. | 2019 | Joint ML Time and Frequency Synchronization for Distributed MIMO-Relay BeamformingabstractIn this paper, we investigate maximum likelihood (ML) time delay (TD) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) synchronization in multi-node decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative relaying systems operating over time-varying channels (TVCs). This new synchronization scheme is embedded into a distributed multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-relay beamforming transceiver structure to avoid the drawbacks of multidimensional ML estimation at the destination and to minimize the overhead cost. The new technique can be jointly implemented with any Doppler spread estimator in an iterative scheme using a time-constant channel (TCC) based synchronization method at the initialization step. The resulting TD and CFO estimates along with the channel estimates are then fed into a distributed MIMO-relay beamforming transceiver of K single-antenna nodes, for pre-compensation at each node of the transmitted signals, to ensure constructive maximum ratio combining (MRC) at the destination. Simulation results show significant synchronization accuracy improvement over previous distributed multi-node synchronization techniques assuming TCCs. The latter translates into noticeable gains in terms of useful link-level throughput, more so at higher Doppler or with more relaying nodes. | 2019 | Multi-Node ML Time and Frequency Synchronization for Distributed MIMO-Relay Beamforming Over Time-Varying Flat-Fading ChannelsabstractIn this paper, we investigate maximum likelihood (ML) time delay (TD) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) synchronization in multi-node decode-and-forward cooperative relaying systems operating over time-varying channels. This new synchronization scheme is embedded into a distributed multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-relay beamforming transceiver structure to avoid the drawbacks of multidimensional ML estimation at the destination and to minimize the overhead cost. By accounting for a perfect Doppler spread value, the new synchronization solution delivers accurate TD and CFO estimates. For real-world operation, however, this new technique can be jointly implemented with any Doppler spread estimator in a new iterative scheme using a time-constant channel (TCC)-based synchronization method at the initialization step. | 2019 | User-Centric Base-Station Wireless Access Virtualization for Future 5G NetworksabstractUser-centric wireless access virtualization (WAV) allows each user to be served by a set of carefully selected transmission points (TPs) forming a user-specific virtual base station (uVBS) adapted to its environment and quality-of-service (QoS) requirement. In this way, this new concept breaks away from the conventional cell-centric architecture to provide boundaryless communications in future fifth-generation (5G) networks. This fundamental structural 5G evolution and the ultra-dense multi-tier heterogeneous context foreseen in such networks require an inevitable rethinking of efficient scalable TP clustering. As such, this paper proposes three innovative low-cost clustering approaches that enable the user-centric WAV and provide dynamic, adaptive, and overlapping TP clusters while requiring not only negligible overhead cost but also minimum signaling changes at both network and user sides. Contrary to existing clustering techniques, the new ones we propose better leverage the 5G features such as extreme densification and massive connectivity as well as new concepts such as millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum and massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO). The simulations show that they may achieve until 154% and 282% of throughput and coverage gains, respectively. Furthermore, these approaches are flexible enough to be adapted to different network dimensions (i.e., space and time), thereby paving the way for achieving the dramatic performance improvements required by the 5G networks to cope with the upcoming mobile data deluge. | 2018 | ML Time-Delay and CFO Synchronization for MIMO-Relay Beamforming over Time-Varying ChannelsabstractIn this paper, we investigate maximum likelihood (ML) time delay (TD) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) synchronization (i.e., estimation and pre- compensation) in decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative systems operating over time-varying channels (TVCs). The new technique is embedded at each relay node in order to avoid the drawbacks of multidimensional ML estimation at the destination and to minimize the overhead cost. By accounting for a perfect Doppler spread value, the new synchronization solution delivers accurate TD and CFO estimates at each relay. The resulting TD and CFO estimates along with the channel estimates are then exploited by the MIMO relay for precompensation at each node of the distributed transmit beamforming signals to ensure constructive maximum ratio combining (MRC) at the destination. Simulation results show significant synchronization accuracy improvement over previous distributed multi-node synchronization techniques assuming time-constant channels (TCCs). | 2018 | QoS-Based Virtualization of User Equipment in 5G Networks (Invited Paper)abstractThis paper develops an innovative scalable and low-cost QoS-based user equipment (UE) virtualization (UEV) scheme that capitalizes on the massive connectivity and the enhanced resources of the new UE generation in terms of connectivity, computing, battery/power, etc. Exploiting the need/excess duality and the heterogeneity in such resources at the UE plan, we form virtual UEs (VUE)s, dynamically, owing to a carefully-designed time-adjusting scheme for the selection of the proper cooperative UE sets. The new UEV scheme is able to adapt to each target UE (TUE) environment, meet its demands, and scale with its needs, offers a reliable and efficient yet low-cost inter-UE cooperation, reduces the overhead and power consumption with respect to conventional approaches, and substantially reduces the number of communication links and, hence, incurs much less interference. System-level simulation results show that the proposed QoS-based UEV scheme largely outperforms the “dummy UEs” approach. | 2017 | Progressive hybrid greyfield wireless access virtualization: Graph-optimized dynamic utility tradeoffs between cloud, fog, and legacy RANsabstractIn this paper, we develop a new dynamic utility for wireless access virtualization (WAV) optimization embodying highly-dimensional time-varying multi-criteria metrics (i.e., CAPEX and OPEX costs, QoS or QoE, multi-tier and/or multi-RAT HetNets, etc.) that gauge the best deployment and viability scenarios of cloud (C)- and fog (F)-RANs within legacy networks. Exploiting the powerful tool of graph theory, we devise a progressive greyfield WAV strategy that optimizes our dynamic utility through an efficient combination of C- and F-RANs. This strategy is able to readjust very quickly to any changes in existing or new constraints as they evolve or occur in time, respectively. The resulting optimized hybrid RAN deployment outperforms both the greenfield and the pre-planed greyfield “turnkey” WAV strategies. Slim Zaidi, Mourad Azzakhmam, Sofiène Affes, Charles L. | 2017 | 5G: A Tutorial Overview of Standards, Trials, Challenges, Deployment, and PracticeabstractThere is considerable pressure to define the key requirements of 5G, develop 5G standards, and perform technology trials as quickly as possible. Normally, these activities are best done in series but there is a desire to complete these tasks in parallel so that commercial deployments of 5G can begin by 2020. 5G will not be an incremental improvement over its predecessors; it aims to be a revolutionary leap forward in terms of data rates, latency, massive connectivity, network reliability, and energy efficiency. These capabilities are targeted at realizing high-speed connectivity, the Internet of Things, augmented virtual reality, the tactile internet, and so on. The requirements of 5G are expected to be met by new spectrum in the microwave bands (3.3-4.2 GHz), and utilizing large bandwidths available in mm-wave bands, increasing spatial degrees of freedom via large antenna arrays and 3-D MIMO, network densification, and new waveforms that provide scalability and flexibility to meet the varying demands of 5G services. Unlike the one size fits all 4G core networks, the 5G core network must be flexible and adaptable and is expected to simultaneously provide optimized support for the diverse 5G use case categories. In this paper, we provide an overview of 5G research, standardization trials, and deployment challenges. Due to the enormous scope of 5G systems, it is necessary to provide some direction in a tutorial article, and in this overview, the focus is largely user centric, rather than device centric. In addition to surveying the state of play in the area, we identify leading technologies, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses, and outline the key challenges ahead, with research test beds delivering promising performance but pre-commercial trials lagging behind the desired 5G targets. | 2017 | Guest Editorial Deployment Issues and Performance Challenges for 5G, Part IabstractThere are rapid developments towards the deployment of 5G and hardly a day goes by without the release of a major announcement concerning 5G. Many of these developments are happening in parallel as there is a race against time for 5G deployment. Various test beds have been established, laboratory trials and proof of concept trials of individual building blocks of 5G are already underway or have been completed, large scale system trials are also happening or are planned and standardisation efforts in the ITU, 3GPP, IEEE, etc. are also in progress. In the case of ITU/3GPP, the standards are expected to be completed by 2019. Many candidate bands for 5G in the centimetric and mm wave range were identified by the World Radio Conference (WRC) 2015 and are expected to be finalized by WRC 2019, while coexistence studies of 5G and existing systems in the new candidate bands are underway. | 2015 | Enabling technologies for 5G air-interface with emphasis on spectral efficiency in the presence of very large number of linksabstractThe spectral efficiency enhancement for 5G air interface represents a technical challenge. In addition to the higher capacity requirement, 5G system will also address massive connectivity demand for 5G applications, such as IoT. A straightforward re-design of OFDM based LTE by using different radio parameter set cannot meet the challenges from the diverse 5G usage scenarios. In this paper, we present 5G radio access technologies by exploiting inter-block non-orthogonality and Intra-block non-orthogonality. The interblock non-orthogonality is achieved by block filtering of OFDM sub-block, and the Intra-block non-orthogonality is achieved by Sparse Code Multiple Access based on optimized sequence design. Such a framework can unify the large numbers of radio links for very diverse services and also provides increased spectral efficiency. In particular, when combined with emerging polar codes, we can further increase the spectral efficiency for smaller packets and support excessive number of connection links. Several design details for this novel air-interface will be presented. Wen Tong, Jianglei Ma, Peiying Zhu |

| 2015 | Dummy users; Network-aware cooperative terminals in wireless access networksabstractCooperation among network nodes at one side and terminal nodes on the other side are the two main enablers of radio access virtualization to establish scalable and dynamically adjustable data pipes to the users in the 5G mobile networks. User cooperation requires careful design to address cooperation incentive, battery life, user discovery, security and privacy. Dummy user, a network-aware terminal, can facilitate the implementation of user cooperation and leverage its benefits. Dummy users can offer a low cost alternative for the enhancement of the network performance to address persistent or temporary demand such as a hotspot created by an outdoor festival. Proper deployment of dummy users provides fairness and ubiquity of the network while enabling many advanced transmission and reception schemes that require more accurate channel state knowledge at the network.
