2014 Demagnetization characteristics of permanent magnet synchronous machines
abstract
This paper presents the calculated demagnetization characteristics of different types of permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) under the influence of demagnetizing MMF contributed by the stator currents (i.e., armature reaction). The demagnetization of NdFeB magnets is quantified in terms of demagnetized magnet volume and loss of magnet remanence using finite element (FE) analysis. The impact of cross-coupled q-axis current and the rotor position are also investigated. The results comparing seven PM machine configurations show that burying the magnets inside the rotor using interior PM (IPM) rotor configurations generally improves the demagnetization performance. In addition, the machine configurations with distributed windings generally provides better demagnetization-withstand capabilities than the configurations with fractional-slot concentrated windings.

2001 Recent advances in power electronics technology for industrial and traction machine drives
abstract
This paper presents a review of the state of the art of power electronics technology in both industrial and traction drive application. Key development trends include the dominance of AC adjustable-speed drives in new applications, with the squirrel-cage induction machine as the preferred machine in most cases. Particularly striking has been the rapid ascendance of the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) as the predominant power switch in both industrial and traction applications ranging from fractional kilowatts to multimegawatts. Key current issues such as industrial drive input power quality and the effects of fast IGBT switching transients on the machines and electromagnetic interference (EMI) production are reviewed. Developments in electric traction for both rail and road vehicles are discussed, including the increasing modularity of new traction inverters in all sizes and the market introduction of new hybrid vehicles using advanced power electronics. The paper concludes with a discussion of expected future trends in power electronics technology that will likely expand the markets for industrial and traction drives during coming years.

1994 Motion control with permanent-magnet AC machines
abstract
Motion control techniques have been developed to exploit the high efficiency and extremely fast dynamic response capabilities of permanent-magnet AC (PMAC) machines. Control techniques are reviewed separately for the two major classes of PMAC machines referred to as trapezoidal (i.e., brushless DC) and sinusoidal machines. While trapezoidal PMAC machine drives are distinguished by their controls simplicity and minimal sensor requirements, sinusoidal PMAC machine drives offer opportunities for extremely smooth torque production and extended high-speed operating ranges. Advanced PMAC machine control topics including sensor elimination techniques and robust servocontrol algorithms are reviewed, concluding with a discussion of PMAC machine drive application trends.>
