2025 Objectifying the Subjective: Cognitive Biases in Topic Interpretations
abstract
Abstract Interpretation of topics is crucial for their downstream applications. State-of-the-art evaluation measures of topic quality such as coherence and word intrusion do not measure how much a topic facilitates the exploration of a corpus. To design evaluation measures grounded on a task, and a population of users, we do user studies to understand how users interpret topics. We propose constructs of topic quality and ask users to assess them in the context of a topic and provide rationale behind evaluations. We use reflexive thematic analysis to identify themes of topic interpretations from rationales. Users interpret topics based on availability and representativeness heuristics rather than probability. We propose a theory of topic interpretation based on the anchoring-and-adjustment heuristic: users anchor on salient words and make semantic adjustments to arrive at an interpretation. Topic interpretation can be viewed as making a judgment under uncertainty by an ecologically rational user, and hence cognitive biases aware user models and evaluation frameworks are needed.

2020 R-VGAE: Relational-variational Graph Autoencoder for Unsupervised Prerequisite Chain Learning
abstract
The task of concept prerequisite chain learning is to automatically determine the existence of prerequisite relationships among concept pairs. In this paper, we frame learning prerequisite relationships among concepts as an unsupervised task with no access to labeled concept pairs during training. We propose a model called the Relational-variational Graph AutoEncoder (R-VGAE) to predict concept relations within a graph consisting of concept and resource nodes. Results show that our unsupervised approach outperforms graph-based semi-supervised methods and other baseline methods by up to 9.77% and 10.47% in terms of prerequisite relation prediction accuracy and F1 score. Our method is notably the first graph-based model that attempts to make use of deep learning representations for the task of unsupervised prerequisite learning. We also expand an existing corpus which totals 1, 717 English Natural Language Processing (NLP)-related lecture slide files and manual concept pair annotations over 322 topics.

2017 WikiLDA: Towards More Effective Knowledge Acquisition in Topic Models using Wikipedia
abstract
Towards the goal of enhancing interpretability of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topics, we propose WikiLDA, an enhancement to LDA using Wikipedia concepts. In WikiLDA, initially, for each document in a corpus we "sprinkle" (append) its most relevant Wikipedia concepts. We then use Generalized Pólya Urn (GPU) to incorporate word-word, word-concept, and concept-concept semantic relatedness into the generative process of LDA. As the most probable concepts from inferred topics can be referred on Wikipedia, the topics are likely to become more interpretable and hence more usable in acquiring domain knowledge from humans for various text mining tasks (e.g. eliciting topic labels for text classification). Empirical results show that a projection of documents by WikiLDA in a semantically enriched and coherent topic space leads to improved performance in text classification like tasks, especially in domains where the classes are hard to separate.

2014 Topic labeled text classification: a weakly supervised approach
abstract
Supervised text classifiers require extensive human expertise and labeling efforts. In this paper, we propose a weakly supervised text classification algorithm based on the labeling of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topics. Our algorithm is based on the generative property of LDA. In our algorithm, we ask an annotator to assign one or more class labels to each topic, based on its most probable words. We classify a document based on its posterior topic proportions and the class labels of the topics. We also enhance our approach by incorporating domain knowledge in the form of labeled words. We evaluate our approach on four real world text classification datasets. The results show that our approach is more accurate in comparison to semi-supervised techniques from previous work. A central contribution of this work is an approach that delivers effectiveness comparable to the state-of-the-art supervised techniques in hard-to-classify domains, with very low overheads in terms of manual knowledge engineering.

2013 Document classification by topic labeling
abstract
In this paper, we propose Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) [1] based document classification algorithm which does not require any labeled dataset. In our algorithm, we construct a topic model using LDA, assign one topic to one of the class labels, aggregate all the same class label topics into a single topic using the aggregation property of the Dirichlet distribution and then automatically assign a class label to each unlabeled document depending on its "closeness" to one of the aggregated topics.
