2026 Flowing Backwards: Improving Normalizing Flows via Reverse Representation Alignment
abstract
Normalizing Flows (NFs) are a class of generative models distinguished by a mathematically invertible architecture, where the forward pass transforms data into a latent space for density estimation, and the reverse pass generates new samples from this space. This characteristic creates an intrinsic synergy between representation learning and data generation. However, the generative quality of standard NFs is limited by poor semantic representations from log-likelihood optimization. To remedy this, we propose a novel alignment strategy that creatively leverages the invertibility of NFs: instead of regularizing the forward pass, we align the intermediate features of the generative (reverse) pass with representations from a powerful vision foundation model, demonstrating superior effectiveness over naive alignment. We also introduce a novel training-free, test-time optimization algorithm for classification, which provides a more intrinsic evaluation of the NF's embedded semantic knowledge. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our approach accelerates the training of NFs by over 3.3x, while simultaneously delivering significant improvements in both generative quality and classification accuracy. New state-of-the-art results for NFs are established on ImageNet 64 x 64 and 256 x 256.

2026 Mem-PAL: Towards Memory-based Personalized Dialogue Assistants for Long-term User-Agent Interaction
abstract
With the rise of smart personal devices, service-oriented human-agent interactions have become increasingly prevalent. This trend highlights the need for personalized dialogue assistants that can understand user-specific traits to accurately interpret requirements and tailor responses to individual preferences. However, existing approaches often overlook the complexities of long-term interactions and fail to capture users’ subjective characteristics. To address these gaps, we present PAL-Bench, a new benchmark designed to evaluate the personalization capabilities of service-oriented assistants in long-term user-agent interactions. In the absence of available real-world data, we develop a multi-step LLM-based synthesis pipeline, which is further verified and refined by human annotators. This process yields PAL-Set, the first Chinese dataset comprising multi-session user logs and dialogue histories, which serves as the foundation for PAL-Bench. Furthermore, to improve personalized service-oriented interactions, we propose H2Memory, a hierarchical and heterogeneous memory framework that incorporates retrieval-augmented generation to improve personalized response generation. Comprehensive experiments on both our PAL-Bench and an external dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed memory framework.

2026 Video Echoed in Music: Semantic, Temporal, and Rhythmic Alignment for Video-to-Music Generation
abstract
Video-to-Music generation seeks to generate musically appropriate background music that enhances audiovisual immersion for videos. However, current approaches suffer from two critical limitations: 1) incomplete representation of video details, leading to weak alignment, and 2) inadequate temporal and rhythmic correspondence, particularly in achieving precise beat synchronization. To address the challenges, we propose Video Echoed in Music (VeM), a latent music diffusion that generates high-quality soundtracks with semantic, temporal, and rhythmic alignment for input videos. To capture video details comprehensively, VeM employs a hierarchical video parsing that acts as a music conductor, orchestrating multi-level information across modalities. Modality-specific encoders, coupled with a storyboard-guided cross-attention mechanism (SG-CAtt), integrate semantic cues while maintaining temporal coherence through position and duration encoding. For rhythmic precision, the frame-level transition-beat aligner and adapter (TB-As) dynamically synchronize visual scene transitions with music beats. We further contribute a novel video-music paired dataset sourced from e-commerce advertisements and video-sharing platforms, which imposes stricter transition-beat synchronization requirements. Meanwhile, we introduce novel metrics tailored to the task. Experimental results demonstrate superiority, particularly in semantic relevance and rhythmic precision.

2026 GAN-Based Domain Adaptation for Image-Aware Layout Generation in Advertising Poster Design
abstract
Layout plays a crucial role in graphic design and poster generation. Recently, the application of deep learning models for layout generation has gained significant attention. This paper focuses on using a GAN-based model conditioned on images to generate advertising poster graphic layouts, requiring a dataset of paired product images and layouts. To address this task, we introduce the Content-aware Graphic Layout Dataset (CGL-Dataset), consisting of 60,548 paired inpainted posters with annotations and 121,000 clean product images. The inpainting artifacts introduce a domain gap between the inpainted posters and clean images. To bridge this gap, we design two GAN-based models. The first model, CGL-GAN, uses Gaussian blur on the inpainted regions to generate layouts. The second model combines unsupervised domain adaptation by introducing a GAN with a pixel-level discriminator (PD), abbreviated as PDA-GAN, to generate image-aware layouts based on the visual texture of input images. The PD is connected to shallow-level feature maps and computes the GAN loss for each input-image pixel. Additionally, we propose three novel content-aware metrics to assess the model's ability to capture the intricate relationships between graphic elements and image content. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that PDA-GAN achieves state-of-the-art performance and generates high-quality image-aware layouts.

2025 RHanDS: Refining Malformed Hands for Generated Images with Decoupled Structure and Style Guidance
abstract
Although diffusion models can generate high-quality human images, their applications are limited by the instability in generating hands with correct structures. In this paper, we introduce RHanDS, a conditional diffusion-based framework designed to refine malformed hands by utilizing decoupled structure and style guidance. The hand mesh reconstructed from the malformed hand offers structure guidance for correcting the structure of the hand, while the malformed hand itself provides style guidance for preserving the style of the hand. To alleviate the mutual interference between style and structure guidance, we introduce a two-stage training strategy and build a series of multi-style hand datasets. In the first stage, we use paired hand images for training to ensure stylistic consistency in hand refining. In the second stage, various hand images generated based on human meshes are used for training, enabling the model to gain control over the hand structure. Experimental results demonstrate that RHanDS can effectively refine hand structure while preserving consistency in hand style.

2025 Do not Abstain! Identify and Solve the Uncertainty
abstract
Despite the widespread application of Large Language Models (LLMs) across various domains, they frequently exhibit overconfidence when encountering uncertain scenarios, yet existing solutions primarily rely on evasive responses (e.g., “I don’t know”) overlooks the opportunity of identifying and addressing the uncertainty to generate more satisfactory responses. To systematically investigate and improve LLMs’ ability of recognizing and addressing the source of uncertainty, we introduce ConfuseBench, a benchmark mainly focus on three types of uncertainty: document scarcity, limited capability, and query ambiguity. Experiments with ConfuseBench reveal that current LLMs struggle to accurately identify the root cause of uncertainty and solve it. They prefer to attribute uncertainty to query ambiguity while overlooking capability limitations, especially for those weaker models. To tackle this challenge, we first generate context-aware inquiries that highlight the confusing aspect of the original query. Then we judge the source of uncertainty based on the uniqueness of the inquiry’s answer. Further we use an on-policy training method, InteractDPO to generate better inquiries. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our approach.

2025 PosterMaker: Towards High-Quality Product Poster Generation with Accurate Text Rendering
abstract
Product posters, which integrate subject, scene, and text, are crucial promotional tools for attracting customers. Creating such posters using modern image generation methods is valuable, while the main challenge lies in accurately rendering text, especially for complex writing systems like Chinese, which contains over 10,000 individual characters. In this work, we identify the key to precise text rendering as constructing a character-discriminative visual feature as a control signal. Based on this insight, we propose a robust character-wise representation as control and we develop TextRenderNet, which achieves a high text rendering accuracy of over 90%. Another challenge in poster generation is maintaining the fidelity of user-specific products. We address this by introducing SceneGenNet, an inpainting-based model, and propose subject fidelity feedback learning to further enhance fidelity. Based on TextRenderNet and SceneGenNet, we present PosterMaker, an end-to-end generation framework. To optimize PosterMaker efficiently, we implement a two-stage training strategy that decouples text rendering and background generation learning. Experimental results show that PosterMaker outperforms existing baselines by a remarkable margin, which demonstrates its effectiveness.

2025 VC4VG: Optimizing Video Captions for Text-to-Video Generation
abstract
Recent advances in text-to-video (T2V) generation highlight the critical role of highquality video-text pairs in training models capable of producing coherent and instructionaligned videos. However, strategies for optimizing video captions specifically for T2V training remain underexplored. In this paper, we introduce VC4VG (Video Captioning for Video Generation), a comprehensive caption optimization framework tailored to the needs of T2V models. We begin by analyzing caption content from a T2V perspective, decomposing the essential elements required for video reconstruction into multiple dimensions, and proposing a principled caption design methodology. To support evaluation, we construct VC4VG-Bench, a new benchmark featuring fine-grained, multi-dimensional, and necessity-graded metrics aligned with T2Vspecific requirements.Extensive T2V finetuning experiments demonstrate a strong correlation between improved caption quality and video generation performance, validating the effectiveness of our approach. We release all benchmark tools and code 1 to support further research.

2025 Minimal Impact ControlNet: Advancing Multi-ControlNet Integration
abstract
With the advancement of diffusion models, there is a growing demand for high-quality, controllable image generation, particularly through methods that utilize one or multiple control signals based on ControlNet. However, in current ControlNet training, each control is designed to influence all areas of an image, which can lead to conflicts when different control signals are expected to manage different parts of the image in practical applications. This issue is especially pronounced with edge-type control conditions, where regions lacking boundary information often represent low-frequency signals, referred to as silent control signals. When combining multiple ControlNets, these silent control signals can suppress the generation of textures in related areas, resulting in suboptimal outcomes. To address this problem, we propose Minimal Impact ControlNet. Our approach mitigates conflicts through three key strategies: constructing a balanced dataset, combining and injecting feature signals in a balanced manner, and addressing the asymmetry in the score function’s Jacobian matrix induced by ControlNet. These improvements enhance the compatibility of control signals, allowing for freer and more harmonious generation in areas with silent control signals.

2025 Differentiable Solver Search for Fast Diffusion Sampling
abstract
Diffusion models have demonstrated remarkable generation quality but at the cost of numerous function evaluations. Recently, advanced ODE-based solvers have been developed to mitigate the substantial computational demands of reverse-diffusion solving under limited sampling steps. However, these solvers, heavily inspired by Adams-like multistep methods, rely solely on t-related Lagrange interpolation. We show that t-related Lagrange interpolation is suboptimal for diffusion model and reveal a compact search space comprised of time steps and solver coefficients. Building on our analysis, we propose a novel differentiable solver search algorithm to identify more optimal solver. Equipped with the searched solver, rectified-flow models, e.g., SiT-XL/2 and FlowDCN-XL/2, achieve FID scores of 2.40 and 2.35, respectively, on ImageNet-$256\times256$ with only 10 steps. Meanwhile, DDPM model, DiT-XL/2, reaches a FID score of 2.33 with only 10 steps. Notably, our searched solver outperforms traditional solvers by a significant margin. Moreover, our searched solver demonstrates generality across various model architectures, resolutions, and model sizes.

2024 Synchronized Video Storytelling: Generating Video Narrations with Structured Storyline
abstract
Video storytelling is engaging multimedia content that utilizes video and its accompanying narration to share a story and attract the audience, where a key challenge is creating narrations for recorded visual scenes. Previous studies on dense video captioning and video story generation have made some progress. However, in practical applications, we typically require synchronized narrations for ongoing visual scenes. In this work, we introduce a new task of Synchronized Video Storytelling, which aims to generate synchronous and informative narrations for videos. These narrations, associated with each video clip, should relate to the visual content, integrate relevant knowledge, and have an appropriate word count corresponding to the clip’s duration. Specifically, a structured storyline is beneficial to guide the generation process, ensuring coherence and integrity. To support the exploration of this task, we introduce a new benchmark dataset E-SyncVidStory with rich annotations. Since existing Multimodal LLMs are not effective in addressing this task in one-shot or few-shot settings, we propose a framework named VideoNarrator that can generate a storyline for input videos and simultaneously generate narrations with the guidance of the generated or predefined storyline. We further introduce a set of evaluation metrics to thoroughly assess the generation. Both automatic and human evaluations validate the effectiveness of our approach. Our dataset, codes, and evaluations will be released.

2024 Enhancing Taobao Display Advertising with Multimodal Representations: Challenges, Approaches and Insights
abstract
Despite the recognized potential of multimodal data to improve model accuracy, many large-scale industrial recommendation systems, including Taobao display advertising system, predominantly depend on sparse ID features in their models. In this work, we explore approaches to leverage multimodal data to enhance the recommendation accuracy. We start from identifying the key challenges in adopting multimodal data in a manner that is both effective and cost-efficient for industrial systems. To address these challenges, we introduce a two-phase framework, including: 1) the pre-training of multimodal representations to capture semantic similarity, and 2) the integration of these representations with existing ID-based models. Furthermore, we detail the architecture of our production system, which is designed to facilitate the deployment of multimodal representations. Since the integration of multimodal representations in mid-2023, we have observed significant performance improvements in Taobao display advertising system. We believe that the insights we have gathered will serve as a valuable resource for practitioners seeking to leverage multimodal data in their systems.

2024 Edit As You Wish: Video Caption Editing with Multi-grained User Control
abstract
Automatically narrating videos in natural language complying with user requests, i.e. Controllable Video Captioning task, can help people manage massive videos with desired intentions. However, existing works suffer from two shortcomings: 1) the control signal is single-grained which can not satisfy diverse user intentions; 2) the video description is generated in a single round which can not be further edited to meet dynamic needs. In this paper, we propose a novel Video Caption Editing (VCE) task to automatically revise an existing video description guided by multi-grained user requests. Inspired by human writing-revision habits, we design the user command as a pivotal triplet {operation, position, attribute} to cover diverse user needs from coarse-grained to fine-grained. To facilitate the VCE task, we automatically construct an open-domain benchmark dataset named VATEX-EDIT and manually collect an e-commerce dataset called EMMAD-EDIT. We further propose a specialized small-scale model (i.e., OPA) compared with two generalist Large Multi-modal Models to perform an exhaustive analysis of the novel task. For evaluation, we adopt comprehensive metrics considering caption fluency, command-caption consistency, and video-caption alignment. Experiments reveal the task challenges of fine-grained multi-modal semantics understanding and processing. Our datasets, codes, and evaluation tools are available at https://github.com/yaolinli/VCE.

2024 Exploring DCN-like architecture for fast image generation with arbitrary resolution
abstract
Arbitrary-resolution image generation still remains a challenging task in AIGC, as it requires handling varying resolutions and aspect ratios while maintaining high visual quality. Existing transformer-based diffusion methods suffer from quadratic computation cost and limited resolution extrapolation capabilities, making them less effective for this task. In this paper, we propose FlowDCN, a purely convolution-based generative model with linear time and memory complexity, that can efficiently generate high-quality images at arbitrary resolutions. Equipped with a new design of learnable group-wise deformable convolution block, our FlowDCN yields higher flexibility and capability to handle different resolutions with a single model. FlowDCN achieves the state-of-the-art 4.30 sFID on $256\times256$ ImageNet Benchmark and comparable resolution extrapolation results, surpassing transformer-based counterparts in terms of convergence speed (only $\frac{1}{5}$ images), visual quality, parameters ($8\%$ reduction) and FLOPs ($20\%$ reduction). We believe FlowDCN offers a promising solution to scalable and flexible image synthesis.

2023 Video Object of Interest Segmentation
abstract
In this work, we present a new computer vision task named video object of interest segmentation (VOIS). Given a video and a target image of interest, our objective is to simultaneously segment and track all objects in the video that are relevant to the target image. This problem combines the traditional video object segmentation task with an additional image indicating the content that users are concerned with. Since no existing dataset is perfectly suitable for this new task, we specifically construct a large-scale dataset called LiveVideos, which contains 2418 pairs of target images and live videos with instance-level annotations. In addition, we propose a transformer-based method for this task. We revisit Swin Transformer and design a dual-path structure to fuse video and image features. Then, a transformer decoder is employed to generate object proposals for segmentation and tracking from the fused features. Extensive experiments on LiveVideos dataset show the superiority of our proposed method.

2023 Deep Task-specific Bottom Representation Network for Multi-Task Recommendation
abstract
Neural-based multi-task learning (MTL) has gained significant improvement, and it has been successfully applied to recommendation system (RS). Recent deep MTL methods for RS (e.g. MMoE, PLE) focus on designing soft gating-based parameter-sharing networks that implicitly learn a generalized representation for each task. However, MTL methods may suffer from performance degeneration when dealing with conflicting tasks, as negative transfer effects can occur on the task-shared bottom representation. This can result in a reduced capacity for MTL methods to capture task-specific characteristics, ultimately impeding their effectiveness and hindering the ability to generalize well on all tasks. In this paper, we focus on the bottom representation learning of MTL in RS and propose the Deep Task-specific Bottom Representation Network (DTRN) to alleviate the negative transfer problem. DTRN obtains task-specific bottom representation explicitly by making each task have its own representation learning network in the bottom representation modeling stage. Specifically, it extracts the user's interests from multiple types of behavior sequences for each task through the parameter-efficient hypernetwork. To further obtain the dedicated representation for each task, DTRN refines the representation of each feature by employing a SENet-like network for each task. The two proposed modules can achieve the purpose of getting task-specific bottom representation to relieve tasks' mutual interference. Moreover, the proposed DTRN is flexible to combine with existing MTL methods. Experiments on one public dataset and one industrial dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DTRN.

2023 CF-Font: Content Fusion for Few-Shot Font Generation
abstract
Content and style disentanglement is an effective way to achieve few-shot font generation. It allows to transfer the style of the font image in a source domain to the style defined with a few reference images in a target domain. However, the content feature extracted using a representative font might not be optimal. In light of this, we propose a content fusion module (CFM) to project the content feature into a linear space defined by the content features of basis fonts, which can take the variation of content features caused by different fonts into consideration. Our method also allows to optimize the style representation vector of reference images through a lightweight iterative style-vector refinement (ISR) strategy. Moreover, we treat the 1D projection of a character image as a probability distribution and leverage the distance between two distributions as the reconstruction loss (namely projected character loss, PCL). Compared to L2 or L1 reconstruction loss, the distribution distance pays more attention to the global shape of characters. We have evaluated our method on a dataset of 300 fonts with 6.5k characters each. Experimental results verify that our method outperforms existing state-of-the-art few-shot font generation methods by a large margin. 2023 Unsupervised Domain Adaption with Pixel-Level Discriminator for Image-Aware Layout Generation
abstract
Layout is essential for graphic design and poster generation. Recently, applying deep learning models to generate layouts has attracted increasing attention. This paper focuses on using the GAN-based model conditioned on image contents to generate advertising poster graphic layouts, which requires an advertising poster layout dataset with paired product images and graphic layouts. However, the paired images and layouts in the existing dataset are collected by inpainting and annotating posters, respectively. There exists a domain gap between inpainted posters (source domain data) and clean product images (target domain data). Therefore, this paper combines unsupervised domain adaption techniques to design a GAN with a novel pixel-level discriminator (PD), called PDA-GAN, to generate graphic layouts according to image contents. The PD is connected to the shallow level feature map and computes the GAN loss for each input-image pixel. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that PDAGAN can achieve state-of-the-art performances and generate high-quality image-aware graphic layouts for advertising posters.

2023 Hierarchical Masked 3D Diffusion Model for Video Outpainting
abstract
Video outpainting aims to complete missing areas at the edges of video frames adequately. Compared to image outpainting, it presents an additional challenge as the model should maintain the temporal consistency of the filled area. In this paper, we introduce a masked 3D diffusion model for video outpainting. We use the technique of mask modeling to train the 3D diffusion model. This allows us to use multiple guide frames to connect the results of multiple video clip inferences, thus ensuring temporal consistency and reducing jitter between adjacent frames. Meanwhile, we extract the global frames of the video as prompts and guide the model to obtain information other than the current video clip using cross-attention. We also introduce a hybrid coarse-to-fine inference pipeline to alleviate the artifact accumulation problem. The existing coarse-to-fine pipeline only uses the infilling strategy, which brings degradation because the time interval of the sparse frames is too large. Our pipeline benefits from bidirectional learning of the mask modeling and thus can employ a hybrid strategy of infilling and interpolation when generating sparse frames. Experiments show that our method achieves state-of-art results in video outpainting tasks.

2023 TextPainter: Multimodal Text Image Generation with Visual-harmony and Text-comprehension for Poster Design
abstract
Text design is one of the most critical procedures in poster design, as it relies heavily on the creativity and expertise of humans to design text images considering the visual harmony and text-semantic. This study introduces TextPainter, a novel multimodal approach that leverages contextual visual information and corresponding text semantics to generate text images. Specifically, TextPainter takes the global-local background image as a hint of style and guides the text image generation with visual harmony. Furthermore, we leverage the language model and introduce a text comprehension module to achieve both sentence-level and word-level style variations. Besides, we construct the PosterT80K dataset, consisting of about 80K posters annotated with sentence-level bounding boxes and text contents. We hope this dataset will pave the way for further research on multimodal text image generation. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments demonstrate that TextPainter can generate visually-and-semantically-harmonious text images for posters.

2023 AutoPoster: A Highly Automatic and Content-aware Design System for Advertising Poster Generation
abstract
Advertising posters, a form of information presentation, combine visual and linguistic modalities. Creating a poster involves multiple steps and necessitates design experience and creativity. This paper introduces AutoPoster, a highly automatic and content-aware system for generating advertising posters. With only product images and titles as inputs, AutoPoster can automatically produce posters of varying sizes through four key stages: image cleaning and retargeting, layout generation, tagline generation, and style attribute prediction. To ensure visual harmony of posters, two content-aware models are incorporated for layout and tagline generation. Moreover, we propose a novel multi-task Style Attribute Predictor (SAP) to jointly predict visual style attributes. Meanwhile, to our knowledge, we propose the first poster generation dataset that includes visual attribute annotations for over 76k posters. Qualitative and quantitative outcomes from user studies and experiments substantiate the efficacy of our system and the aesthetic superiority of the generated posters compared to other poster generation methods.

2023 Visual Captioning at Will: Describing Images and Videos Guided by a Few Stylized Sentences
abstract
Stylized visual captioning aims to generate image or video descriptions with specific styles, making them more attractive and emotionally appropriate. One major challenge with this task is the lack of paired stylized captions for visual content, so most existing works focus on unsupervised methods that do not rely on parallel datasets. However, these approaches still require training with sufficient examples that have style labels, and the generated captions are limited to predefined styles. To address these limitations, we explore the problem of Few-Shot Stylized Visual Captioning, which aims to generate captions in any desired style, using only a few examples as guidance during inference, without requiring further training. We propose a framework called FS-StyleCap for this task, which utilizes a conditional encoder-decoder language model and a visual projection module. Our two-step training scheme proceeds as follows: first, we train a style extractor to generate style representations on an unlabeled text-only corpus. Then, we freeze the extractor and enable our decoder to generate stylized descriptions based on the extracted style vector and projected visual content vectors. During inference, our model can generate desired stylized captions by deriving the style representation from user-supplied examples. Our automatic evaluation results for few-shot sentimental visual captioning outperform state-of-the-art approaches and are comparable to models that are fully trained on labeled style corpora. Human evaluations further confirm our model's ability to handle multiple styles.

2022 Structure-Aware Motion Transfer with Deformable Anchor Model
abstract
Given a source image and a driving video depicting the same object type, the motion transfer task aims to generate a video by learning the motion from the driving video while preserving the appearance from the source image. In this paper, we propose a novel structure-aware motion modeling approach, the deformable anchor model (DAM), which can automatically discover the motion structure of arbitrary objects without leveraging their prior structure information. Specifically, inspired by the known deformable part model (DPM), our DAM introduces two types of anchors or key-points: i) a number of motion anchors that capture both appearance and motion information from the source image and driving video; ii) a latent root anchor, which is linked to the motion anchors to facilitate better learning of the representations of the object structure information. More-over, DAM can be further extended to a hierarchical version through the introduction of additional latent anchors to model more complicated structures. By regularizing motion anchors with latent anchor(s), DAM enforces the corre-spondences between them to ensure the structural information is well captured and preserved. Moreover, DAM can be learned effectively in an unsupervised manner. We validate our proposed DAM for motion transfer on different bench-mark datasets. Extensive experiments clearly demonstrate that DAM achieves superior performance relative to existing state-of-the-art methods.

2022 Learning Pixel-Level Distinctions for Video Highlight Detection
abstract
The goal of video highlight detection is to select the most attractive segments from a long video to depict the most interesting parts of the video. Existing methods typically focus on modeling relationship between different video segments in order to learning a model that can assign highlight scores to these segments; however, these approaches do not explicitly consider the contextual dependency within individual segments. To this end, we propose to learn pixel-level distinctions to improve the video highlight detection. This pixel-level distinction indicates whether or not each pixel in one video belongs to an interesting section. The advantages of modeling such fine-level distinctions are two-fold. First, it allows us to exploit the temporal and spatial relations of the content in one video, since the distinction of a pixel in one frame is highly dependent on both the content before this frame and the content around this pixel in this frame. Second, learning the pixel-level distinction also gives a good explanation to the video highlight task regarding what contents in a highlight segment will be attractive to people. We design an encoder-decoder network to estimate the pixel-level distinction, in which we leverage the 3D convolutional neural networks to exploit the temporal context information, and further take advantage of the visual saliency to model the spatial distinction. State-of-the-art performance on three public benchmarks clearly validates the effectiveness of our framework for video highlight detection.

2022 CapOnImage: Context-driven Dense-Captioning on Image
abstract
Existing image captioning systems are dedicated to generating narrative captions for images, which are spatially detached from the image in presentation. However, texts can also be used as decorations on the image to highlight the key points and increase the attractiveness of images. In this work, we introduce a new task called captioning on image (CapOn-Image) 1 , which aims to generate dense captions at different locations of the image based on contextual information. For this new task, we introduce a large-scale benchmark called CapOn-Image2M, which contains 2.1 million product images, each with an average of 4.8 spatially localized captions. To fully exploit the surrounding visual context to generate the most suitable caption for each location, we propose a multimodal pre-training model with multi-level pretraining tasks that progressively learn the correspondence between texts and image locations from easy to hard.To avoid generating redundant captions for nearby locations, we further enhance the location embedding with neighbor locations .Compared with other image captioning model variants, our model achieves the best results in both captioning accuracy and diversity aspects.

2022 Composition-aware Graphic Layout GAN for Visual-Textual Presentation Designs
abstract
In this paper, we study the graphic layout generation problem of producing high-quality visual-textual presentation designs for given images. We note that image compositions, which contain not only global semantics but also spatial information, would largely affect layout results. Hence, we propose a deep generative model, dubbed as composition-aware graphic layout GAN (CGL-GAN), to synthesize layouts based on the global and spatial visual contents of input images. To obtain training images from images that already contain manually designed graphic layout data, previous work suggests masking design elements (e.g., texts and embellishments) as model inputs, which inevitably leaves hint of the ground truth. We study the misalignment between the training inputs (with hint masks) and test inputs (without masks), and design a novel domain alignment module (DAM) to narrow this gap. For training, we built a large-scale layout dataset which consists of 60,548 advertising posters with annotated layout information. To evaluate the generated layouts, we propose three novel metrics according to aesthetic intuitions. Through both quantitative and qualitative evaluations, we demonstrate that the proposed model can synthesize high-quality graphic layouts according to image compositions. The data and code will be available at https://github.com/minzhouGithub/CGL-GAN.

2022 Dual-Level Decoupled Transformer for Video Captioning
abstract
Video captioning aims to understand the spatio-temporal semantic concept of the video and generate descriptive sentences. The de-facto approach to this task dictates a text generator to learn from offline-extracted motion or appearance features from pre-trained vision models. However, these methods may suffer from the so-called "couple" drawbacks on both video spatio-temporal representation and sentence generation. For the former, "couple" means learning spatio-temporal representation in a single model(3DCNN), resulting the problems named disconnection in task/pre-train domain and hard for end-to-end training. As for the latter, "couple" means treating the generation of visual semantic and syntax-related words equally. To this end, we present D2 - a dual-level decoupled transformer pipeline to solve the above drawbacks: (i) for video spatio-temporal representation, we decouple the process of it into "first-spatial-then-temporal" paradigm, releasing the potential of using dedicated model(e.g. image-text pre-training) to connect the pre-training and downstream tasks, and makes the entire model end-to-end trainable. (ii) for sentence generation, we propose Syntax-Aware Decoder to dynamically measure the contribution of visual semantic and syntax-related words. Extensive experiments on three widely-used benchmarks (MSVD, MSR-VTT and VATEX) have shown great potential of the proposed D2 and surpassed the previous methods by a large margin in the task of video captioning.

2022 Geometry Aligned Variational Transformer for Image-conditioned Layout Generation
abstract
Layout generation is a novel task in computer vision, which combines the challenges in both object localization and aesthetic appraisal, widely used in advertisements, posters and slides design. An accurate and pleasant layout should consider both the intra-domain relationship within layout elements and the inter-domain relationship between layout elements and image. However, most previous methods simply focus on image-content-agnostic layout generation, without leveraging the complex visual information from the image. To this end, we explore a novel paradigm entitled image-conditioned layout generation, which aims to add text overlays to an image in a semantically coherent manner. Specifically, we propose an Image-Conditioned Variational Transformer (ICVT) that autoregressively generates various layouts in an image. First, self-attention mechanism is adopted to model the contextual relationship within layout elements, while cross-attention mechanism is used to fuse the visual information of conditional images. Subsequently, we take them as building blocks of conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE), which demonstrates appealing diversity. Second, in order to alleviate the gap between layout elements domain and visual domain, we design a Geometry Alignment module, in which the geometric information of the image is aligned with the layout representation. In addition, we construct a large-scale advertisement poster layout designing dataset with delicate layout and saliency map annotations. Experimental results show that our model can adaptively generate layouts in the non-intrusive area of the image, resulting in a harmonious layout design.

2022 Estimation of Reliable Proposal Quality for Temporal Action Detection
abstract
Temporal action detection (TAD) aims to locate and recognize the actions in an untrimmed video. Anchor-free methods have made remarkable progress which mainly formulate TAD into two tasks: classification and localization using two separate branches. This paper reveals the temporal misalignment between the two tasks hindering further progress. To address this, we propose a new method that gives insights into moment and region perspectives simultaneously to align the two tasks by acquiring reliable proposal quality. For the moment perspective, Boundary Evaluate Module (BEM) is designed which focuses on local appearance and motion evolvement to estimate boundary quality and adopts a multi-scale manner to deal with varied action durations. For the region perspective, we introduce Region Evaluate Module (REM) which uses a new and efficient sampling method for proposal feature representation containing more contextual information compared with point feature to refine category score and proposal boundary. The proposed B oundary Evaluate Module and R egion E valuate M odule (BREM) are generic, and they can be easily integrated with other anchor-free TAD methods to achieve superior performance. In our experiments, BREM is combined with two different frameworks and improves the performance on THUMOS14 by 3.6% and 1.0% respectively, reaching a new state-of-the-art (63.6% average mAP). Meanwhile, a competitive result of 36.2% average mAP is achieved on ActivityNet-1.3 with the consistent improvement of BREM. The codes are released at \urlhttps://github.com/Junshan233/BREM.

2022 Self-Supervised Text Erasing with Controllable Image Synthesis
abstract
Recent efforts on text erasing have shown promising results. However, existing methods require rich yet costly label annotations to obtain robust models, which limits their use for practical applications. To this end, we study an unsupervised scenario by proposing a novel Self-supervised Text Erasing (STE) framework that jointly learns to synthesize training images with erasure ground-truth and accurately erase texts in the real world. We first design a style-aware image synthesis function to generate synthetic images with diverse styled texts based on two synthetic mechanisms. To bridge the text style gap between the synthetic and real-world data, a policy network is constructed to control the synthetic mechanisms by picking style parameters with the guidance of two specifically designed rewards. The synthetic training images with ground-truth are then fed to train a coarse-to-fine erasing network. To produce better erasing outputs, a triplet erasure loss is designed to enforce the refinement stage to recover background textures. Moreover, we provide a new dataset (called PosterErase), which contains 60K high-resolution posters and is more challenging for the erasing task. The proposed method has been extensively evaluated with both PosterErase and the widely-used SCUT-Enstext dataset. Notably, on PosterErase, our method achieves 5.07 in terms of FID, with a relative improvement of 20.9% over existing supervised baselines.

2022 CreaGAN: An Automatic Creative Generation Framework for Display Advertising
abstract
Creatives are an effective form of delivering product information on the E-commerce platform. Designing an exquisite creative is a time-consuming but crucial task for sellers. In order to accelerate the process, we propose an automatic creative generation framework, named CreaGAN, to make the design procedure easier, faster, and more accurate. Given a well-designed creative for one product, our method can generalize to other product materials by utilizing existing design elements (e.g., background material). The framework consists of two major parts: aesthetics-aware placement and creative inpainting model. The placement model aims to generate plausible locations for new products by considering aesthetic principles. And the inpainting model focus on filling the mismatched regions through contextual information. We conduct experiments on both the public dataset and the real-world creative dataset. Quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate that our method outperforms current state-of-the-art methods and obtains more reasonable and aesthetic visualization results.

On an e-commerce platform, virtual try-on not only improves consumers' shopping experience but also attracts more consumers. However, the existing public virtual try-on dataset can't be generalized to Taobao fashion items because of low resolution, racial differences, and small dataset size. In this work, we build a large-scale and high-resolution virtual try-on dataset for Taobao e-commerce. Based on the dataset, we propose a virtual try-on system to generate high-resolution and attractive virtual try-on images without time-consuming image preprocessing. 2021 Efficient Optimal Selection for Composited Advertising Creatives with Tree Structure
abstract
Ad creatives are one of the prominent mediums for online e-commerce advertisements. Ad creatives with enjoyable visual appearance may increase the click-through rate (CTR) of products. Ad creatives are typically handcrafted by advertisers and then delivered to the advertising platforms for advertisement. In recent years, advertising platforms are capable of instantly compositing ad creatives with arbitrarily designated elements of each ingredient, so advertisers are only required to provide basic materials. While facilitating the advertisers, a great number of potential ad creatives can be composited, making it difficult to accurately estimate CTR for them given limited real-time feedback. To this end, we propose an Adaptive and Efficient ad creative Selection (AES) framework based on a tree structure. The tree structure on compositing ingredients enables dynamic programming for efficient ad creative selection on the basis of CTR. Due to limited feedback, the CTR estimator is usually of high variance. Exploration techniques based on Thompson sampling are widely used for reducing variances of the CTR estimator, alleviating feedback sparsity. Based on the tree structure, Thompson sampling is adapted with dynamic programming, leading to efficient exploration for potential ad creatives with the largest CTR. We finally evaluate the proposed algorithm on the synthetic dataset and the real-world dataset. The results show that our approach can outperform competing baselines in terms of convergence rate and overall CTR.

However, existing methods rarely transfer motion to objects other than human body or human face, and even fewer apply motion transfer in practical scenarios. In this work, we apply motion transfer on the Taobao product images in real e-commerce scenario to generate creative animations, which are more attractive than static images and they will bring more benefits. 2021 Automated Creative Optimization for E-Commerce Advertising
abstract
Advertising creatives are ubiquitous in E-commerce advertisements and aesthetic creatives may improve the click-through rate (CTR) of the products. Nowadays smart advertisement platforms provide the function of compositing creatives based on source materials provided by advertisers. Since a great number of creatives can be generated, it is difficult to accurately predict their CTR given a limited amount of feedback. Factorization machine (FM), which models inner product interaction between features, can be applied for the CTR prediction of creatives. However, interactions between creative elements may be more complex than the inner product, and the FM-estimated CTR may be of high variance due to limited feedback. To address these two issues, we propose an Automated Creative Optimization (AutoCO) framework to model complex interaction between creative elements and to balance between exploration and exploitation. Specifically, motivated by AutoML, we propose one-shot search algorithms for searching effective interaction functions between elements. We then develop stochastic variational inference to estimate the posterior distribution of parameters based on the reparameterization trick, and apply Thompson Sampling for efficiently exploring potentially better creatives. We evaluate the proposed method with both a synthetic dataset and two public datasets. The experimental results show our method can outperform competing baselines with respect to cumulative regret. The online A/B test shows our method leads to a 7% increase in CTR compared to the baseline.

2021 A Hybrid Bandit Model with Visual Priors for Creative Ranking in Display Advertising
abstract
Creative plays a great important role in e-commerce for exhibiting products. Sellers usually create multiple creatives for comprehensive demonstrations, thus it is crucial to display the most appealing design to maximize the Click-Through Rate (CTR). For this purpose, modern recommender systems dynamically rank creatives when a product is proposed for a user. However, this task suffers more cold-start problem than conventional products recommendation since the user-click data is more scarce and creatives potentially change more frequently. In this paper, we propose a hybrid bandit model with visual priors which first makes predictions with a visual evaluation, and then naturally evolves to focus on the specialities through the hybrid bandit model. Our contributions are three-fold: 1) We present a visual-aware ranking model (called VAM) that incorporates a list-wise ranking loss for ordering the creatives according to the visual appearance. 2) Regarding visual evaluation as a prior, the hybrid bandit model (called HBM) is proposed to evolve consistently to make better posteriori estimations by taking more observations into consideration for online scenarios. 3) A first large-scale creative dataset, CreativeRanking1, is constructed, which contains over 1.7M creatives of 500k products as well as their real impression and click data. Extensive experiments have also been conducted on both our dataset and public Mushroom dataset, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2018 Image Matters: Visually Modeling User Behaviors Using Advanced Model Server
abstract
In Taobao, the largest e-commerce platform in China, billions of items are provided and typically displayed with their images. For better user experience and business effectiveness, Click Through Rate (CTR) prediction in online advertising system exploits abundant user historical behaviors to identify whether a user is interested in a candidate ad. Enhancing behavior representations with user behavior images will help understand user's visual preference and improve the accuracy of CTR prediction greatly. So we propose to model user preference jointly with user behavior ID features and behavior images. However, training with user behavior images brings tens to hundreds of images in one sample, giving rise to a great challenge in both communication and computation. To handle these challenges, we propose a novel and efficient distributed machine learning paradigm called Advanced Model Server (AMS). With the well-known Parameter Server (PS) framework, each server node handles a separate part of parameters and updates them independently. AMS goes beyond this and is designed to be capable of learning a unified image descriptor model shared by all server nodes which embeds large images into low dimensional high level features before transmitting images to worker nodes. AMS thus dramatically reduces the communication load and enables the arduous joint training process. Based on AMS, the methods of effectively combining the images and ID features are carefully studied, and then we propose a Deep Image CTR Model. Our approach is shown to achieve significant improvements in both online and offline evaluations, and has been deployed in Taobao display advertising system serving the main traffic.

2018 Semantic Human Matting
abstract
Human matting, high quality extraction of humans from natural images, is crucial for a wide variety of applications. Since the matting problem is severely under-constrained, most previous methods require user interactions to take user designated trimaps or scribbles as constraints. This user-in-the-loop nature makes them difficult to be applied to large scale data or time-sensitive scenarios. In this paper, instead of using explicit user input constraints, we employ implicit semantic constraints learned from data and propose an automatic human matting algorithm Semantic Human Matting(SHM). SHM is the first algorithm that learns to jointly fit both semantic information and high quality details with deep networks. In practice, simultaneously learning both coarse semantics and fine details is challenging. We propose a novel fusion strategy which naturally gives a probabilistic estimation of the alpha matte. We also construct a very large dataset with high quality annotations consisting of 35,513 unique foregrounds to facilitate the learning and evaluation of human matting. Extensive experiments on this dataset and plenty of real images show that SHM achieves comparable results with state-of-the-art interactive matting methods.

2014 Product Sparse Coding
abstract
Sparse coding is a widely involved technique in computer vision. However, the expensive computational cost can hamper its applications, typically when the codebook size must be limited due to concerns on running time. In this paper, we study a special case of sparse coding in which the codebook is a Cartesian product of two subcodebooks. We present algorithms to decompose this sparse coding problem into smaller subproblems, which can be separately solved. Our solution, named as Product Sparse Coding (PSC), reduces the time complexity from O(K) to O(√K) in the codebook size K. In practice, this can be 20-100× faster than standard sparse coding. In experiments we demonstrate the efficiency and quality of this method on the applications of image classification and image retrieval.

2014 Optimized Product Quantization
abstract
Product quantization (PQ) is an effective vector quantization method. A product quantizer can generate an exponentially large codebook at very low memory/time cost. The essence of PQ is to decompose the high-dimensional vector space into the Cartesian product of subspaces and then quantize these subspaces separately. The optimal space decomposition is important for the PQ performance, but still remains an unaddressed issue. In this paper, we optimize PQ by minimizing quantization distortions w.r.t the space decomposition and the quantization codebooks. We present two novel solutions to this challenging optimization problem. The first solution iteratively solves two simpler sub-problems. The second solution is based on a Gaussian assumption and provides theoretical analysis of the optimality. We evaluate our optimized product quantizers in three applications: (i) compact encoding for exhaustive ranking [1], (ii) building inverted multi-indexing for non-exhaustive search [2], and (iii) compacting image representations for image retrieval [3]. In all applications our optimized product quantizers outperform existing solutions.

2013 Sparse-Coded Features for Image Retrieval
abstract
The bag-of-features(BOF) image representation [7] is popular in largescale image retrieval. With BOF, the memory to store the inverted index file and the search complexity are both approximately linearly increased with the number of images. To address the retrieval efficiency and the memory constraint problem, besides some improvement work based on BOF, there come alternative approaches which aggregate local descriptors in one image into a single vector using Fisher Vector [6] or Vector of Local Aggregated Descriptor (VLAD) [1]. It has been shown in [1] that with as few as 16 bytes to represent an image, the retrieval performance is still comparable to that of the BOF representation. In this paper, we illustrate that Fisher Vector, VLAD and BOF can be uniformly derived in two steps: i Encoding – separately map each local descriptor into a code, and ii Pooling – aggregate all codes from one image into a single vector. Motivated by the success of these two-step approaches, we propose to use sparse coding(SC) framework to aggregate local feature for image retrieval. SC framework is firstly introduced by [10] for the task of image classification. It is a classical two-step approach: Step 1: Encoding. 2013 Optimized Product Quantization for Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search
abstract
Product quantization is an effective vector quantization approach to compactly encode high-dimensional vectors for fast approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) search. The essence of product quantization is to decompose the original high-dimensional space into the Cartesian product of a finite number of low-dimensional subspaces that are then quantized separately. Optimal space decomposition is important for the performance of ANN search, but still remains unaddressed. In this paper, we optimize product quantization by minimizing quantization distortions w.r.t. the space decomposition and the quantization codebooks. We present two novel methods for optimization: a non-parametric method that alternatively solves two smaller sub-problems, and a parametric method that is guaranteed to achieve the optimal solution if the input data follows some Gaussian distribution. We show by experiments that our optimized approach substantially improves the accuracy of product quantization for ANN search.
