2024 A Blockchain-Empowered Incentive Mechanism for Cross-Silo Federated Learning
abstract
In cross-silo federated learning (FL), organizations cooperatively train a global model with their local datasets. However, some organizations may act as free riders such that they only contribute a small amount of resources but can obtain a high-accuracy global model. Meanwhile, some organizations can be business competitors, and they do not trust each other or any third-party entity. In this work, our goal is to design a framework that motivates efficient cooperation among organizations without the coordination of a central entity. To this end, we propose a blockchain-empowered incentive mechanism framework for cross-silo FL. Under this incentive mechanism framework, we develop a distributed algorithm that enables organizations to achieve social efficiency, individual rationality, and budget balance without private information of the organizations. Our proposed algorithm has a proven convergence guarantee and empirically achieves a higher convergence rate than a benchmark method. Moreover, we propose a transaction minimization algorithm to reduce the number of transactions made among organizations in the blockchain. This algorithm is proven to achieve a performance no worse than twice the minimum value. The experimental results in a testbed show that our proposed framework enables organizations to achieve social efficiency within a relatively short iterative process.

2023 Reliable Robustness Evaluation via Automatically Constructed Attack Ensembles
abstract
Attack Ensemble (AE), which combines multiple attacks together, provides a reliable way to evaluate adversarial robustness. In practice, AEs are often constructed and tuned by human experts, which however tends to be sub-optimal and time-consuming. In this work, we present AutoAE, a conceptually simple approach for automatically constructing AEs. In brief, AutoAE repeatedly adds the attack and its iteration steps to the ensemble that maximizes ensemble improvement per additional iteration consumed. We show theoretically that AutoAE yields AEs provably within a constant factor of the optimal for a given defense. We then use AutoAE to construct two AEs for l∞ and l2 attacks, and apply them without any tuning or adaptation to 45 top adversarial defenses on the RobustBench leaderboard. In all except one cases we achieve equal or better (often the latter) robustness evaluation than existing AEs, and notably, in 29 cases we achieve better robustness evaluation than the best known one. Such performance of AutoAE shows itself as a reliable evaluation protocol for adversarial robustness, which further indicates the huge potential of automatic AE construction. Code is available at https://github.com/LeegerPENG/AutoAE.

2015 Weighted label propagation algorithm for overlapping community detection
abstract
Overlapping community detection algorithm research is one of hot topics in current social network analysis. In this paper, we applied the idea of weighted label propagation to overlapping community detection algorithm design, and propose a weighted label propagation algorithm (WLPA). Moreover, in order to evaluate the performance results of various overlapping community detection algorithms, we put forward a series of evaluation criteria based on error distribution curve of overlapping vertices. The experiment results show that the algorithm has a faster speed and better community detection results, and the evaluation criteria is in line with the inherent characteristics of the social network overlapping community structure.
