2014 Using Appearance-Based Hand Features for Dynamic RGB-D Gesture Recognition
abstract
Gesture recognition using RGB-D sensors has currently an important role in many fields such as human-computer interfaces, robotics control, and sign language recognition. However, the recognition of hand gestures under natural conditions with low spatial resolution and strong motion blur still remains an open research question. In this paper we propose an online gesture recognition method for multimodal RGB-D data. We extract multiple hand features with the assistance of body and hand masks from RGB and depth frames, and full-body features from the skeleton data. These features are classified by multiple Extreme Learning Machines on the frame level. The classifier outputs are then modeled on the sequence level and fused together to provide the final classification results for the gestures. We apply our method on the ChaLearn 2013 gesture dataset consisting of natural signs with the hand diameters in the images around 20-40 pixels. Our method achieves an 85% recognition accuracy with 20 gesture classes and can perform the recognition in real-time.

2013 Online RGB-D gesture recognition with extreme learning machines
abstract
Gesture recognition is needed in many applications such as human-computer interaction and sign language recognition. The challenges of building an actual recognition system do not lie only in reaching an acceptable recognition accuracy but also with requirements for fast online processing. In this paper, we propose a method for online gesture recognition using RGB-D data from a Kinect sensor. Frame-level features are extracted from RGB frames and the skeletal model obtained from the depth data, and then classified by multiple extreme learning machines. The outputs from the classifiers are aggregated to provide the final classification results for the gestures. We test our method on the ChaLearn multi-modal gesture challenge data. The results of the experiments demonstrate that the method can perform effective multi-class gesture recognition in real-time.

2012 Clustering by Nonnegative Matrix Factorization Using Graph Random Walk
abstract
Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is a promising relaxation technique for clustering analysis. However, conventional NMF methods that directly approximate the pairwise similarities using the least square error often yield mediocre performance for data in curved manifolds because they can capture only the immediate similarities between data samples. Here we propose a new NMF clustering method which replaces the approximated matrix with its smoothed version using random walk. Our method can thus accommodate farther relationships between data samples. Furthermore, we introduce a novel regularization in the proposed objective function in order to improve over spectral clustering. The new learning objective is optimized by a multiplicative Majorization-Minimization algorithm with a scalable implementation for learning the factorizing matrix. Extensive experimental results on real-world datasets show that our method has strong performance in terms of cluster purity.
