2024 ViLCo-Bench: VIdeo Language COntinual learning Benchmark
abstract
Video language continual learning involves continuously adapting to information from video and text inputs, enhancing a model’s ability to handle new tasks while retaining prior knowledge. This field is a relatively under-explored area, and establishing appropriate datasets is crucial for facilitating communication and research in this field. In this study, we present the first dedicated benchmark, ViLCo-Bench, designed to evaluate continual learning models across a range of video-text tasks. The dataset comprises ten-minute-long videos and corresponding language queries collected from publicly available datasets. Additionally, we introduce a novel memory-efficient framework that incorporates self-supervised learning and mimics long-term and short-term memory effects. This framework addresses challenges including memory complexity from long video clips, natural language complexity from open queries, and text-video misalignment. We posit that ViLCo-Bench, with greater complexity compared to existing continual learning benchmarks, would serve as a critical tool for exploring the video-language domain, extending beyond conventional class-incremental tasks, and addressing complex and limited annotation issues. The curated data, evaluations, and our novel method are available at https://github.com/cruiseresearchgroup/ViLCo.

2022 Monocular Camera-Based Point-Goal Navigation by Learning Depth Channel and Cross-Modality Pyramid Fusion
abstract
For a monocular camera-based navigation system, if we could effectively explore scene geometric cues from RGB images, the geometry information will significantly facilitate the efficiency of the navigation system. Motivated by this, we propose a highly efficient point-goal navigation framework, dubbed Geo-Nav. In a nutshell, our Geo-Nav consists of two parts: a visual perception part and a navigation part. In the visual perception part, we firstly propose a Self-supervised Depth Estimation network (SDE) specially tailored for the monocular camera-based navigation agent. Our SDE learns a mapping from an RGB input image to its corresponding depth image by exploring scene geometric constraints in a self-consistency manner. Then, in order to achieve a representative visual representation from the RGB inputs and learned depth images, we propose a Cross-modality Pyramid Fusion module (CPF). Concretely, our CPF computes a patch-wise cross-modality correlation between different modal features and exploits the correlation to fuse and enhance features at each scale. Thanks to the patch-wise nature of our CPF, we can fuse feature maps at high resolution, allowing our visual network to perceive more image details. In the navigation part, our extracted visual representations are fed to a navigation policy network to learn how to map the visual representations to agent actions effectively. Extensive experiments on a widely-used multiple-room environment Gibson demonstrate that Geo-Nav outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.

2021 Auto-Navigator: Decoupled Neural Architecture Search for Visual Navigation
abstract
Existing visual navigation approaches leverage classification neural networks to extract global features from visual data for navigation. However, these networks are not originally designed for navigation tasks. Thus, the neural architectures might not be suitable to capture scene con-tents. Fortunately, neural architecture search (NAS) brings a hope to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose an Auto-Navigator to customize a specialized network for visual navigation. However, as navigation tasks mainly rely on reinforcement learning (RL) rewards in training, such weak supervision is insufficiently indicative for NAS to optimize visual perception network. Thus, we introduce imitation learning (IL) with optimal paths to optimize navigation policies while selecting an optimal architecture. As Auto-Navigator can obtain a direct supervision in every step, such guidance greatly facilitates architecture search. In particular, we initialize our Auto-Navigator with a learnable distribution over the search space of visual perception architecture, and then optimize the distribution with IL supervision. Afterwards, we employ an RL reward function to fine-tune our Auto-Navigator to improve the generalization ability of our model. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our Auto-Navigator outperforms baseline methods on Gibson and Matterport3D without significantly increasing network parameters.
