| 2023 | PACO: Parts and Attributes of Common ObjectsabstractObject models are gradually progressing from predicting just category labels to providing detailed descriptions of object instances. This motivates the need for large datasets which go beyond traditional object masks and provide richer annotations such as part masks and attributes. Hence, we introduce PACO: Parts and Attributes of Common Objects. It spans 75 object categories, 456 object-part categories and 55 attributes across image (LVIS) and video (Eg04D) datasets. We provide 641K part masks an-notated across 260K object boxes, with roughly half of them exhaustively annotated with attributes as well. We design evaluation metrics and provide benchmark results for three tasks on the dataset: part mask segmentation, object and part attribute prediction and zero-shot instance detection. Dataset, models, and code are open-sourced at https://github.com/jacebookresearch/paco. | 2023 | Self-Supervised Object Detection from Egocentric VideosabstractUnderstanding the visual world from human perspectives has been a long-standing challenge in computer vision. Egocentric videos exhibit high scene complexity and irregular motion flows compared to typical video understanding tasks. With the egocentric domain in mind, we address the problem of self-supervised, class-agnostic object detection, aiming to locate all objects in a given view, without any annotations or pre-trained weights. Our method, self-supervised object detection from egocentric videos (DEVI), generalizes appearance-based methods to learn features end-to-end that are category-specific and invariant to viewing angle and illumination. Our approach leverages natural human behavior in egocentric perception to sample diverse views of objects for our multi-view and scale-regression losses, and our cluster residual module learns multi-category patches for complex scene understanding. DEVI results in gains up to 4.11% AP50, 0.11% AR1, 1.32% AR10, and 5.03% AR100on recent egocentric datasets, while significantly reducing model complexity. We also demonstrate competitive performance on out-of-domain datasets without additional training or fine-tuning. Peri Akiva, Jing Huang 0020, Kevin J. Liang, Rama Kovvuri, Matt Feiszli, Kristin J. | 2023 | TextStyleBrush: Transfer of Text Aesthetics From a Single ExampleabstractWe present a novel approach for disentangling the content of a text image from all aspects of its appearance. The appearance representation we derive can then be applied to new content, for one-shot transfer of the source style to new content. We learn this disentanglement in a self-supervised manner. Our method processes entire word boxes, without requiring segmentation of text from background, per-character processing, or making assumptions on string lengths. We show results in different text domains which were previously handled by specialized methods, e.g., scene text, handwritten text. To these ends, we make a number of technical contributions: (1) We disentangle the style and content of a textual image into a non-parametric, fixed-dimensional vector. (2) We propose a novel approach inspired by StyleGAN but conditioned over the example style at different resolution and content. (3) We present novel self-supervised training criteria which preserve both source style and target content using a pre-trained font classifier and text recognizer. Finally, (4) we also introduce Imgur5K, a new challenging dataset for handwritten word images. We offer numerous qualitative photo-realistic results of our method. We further show that our method surpasses previous work in quantitative tests on scene text and handwriting datasets, as well as in a user study. | 2021 | A Multiplexed Network for End-to-End, Multilingual OCRabstractRecent advances in OCR have shown that an end-to-end (E2E) training pipeline that includes both detection and recognition leads to the best results. However, many existing methods focus primarily on Latin-alphabet languages, often even only case-insensitive English characters. In this paper, we propose an E2E approach, Multiplexed Multilingual Mask TextSpotter, that performs script identification at the word level and handles different scripts with different recognition heads, all while maintaining a unified loss that simultaneously optimizes script identification and multiple recognition heads. Experiments show that our method outperforms the single-head model with similar number of parameters in end-to-end recognition tasks, and achieves state-of-the-art results on MLT17 and MLT19 joint text detection and script identification benchmarks. We believe that our work is a step towards the end-to-end trainable and scalable multilingual multi-purpose OCR system. Our code and model will be released. | 2017 | Query-Guided Regression Network with Context Policy for Phrase GroundingabstractGiven a textual description of an image, phrase grounding localizes objects in the image referred by query phrases in the description. State-of-the-art methods address the problem by ranking a set of proposals based on the relevance to each query, which are limited by the performance of independent proposal generation systems and ignore useful cues from context in the description. In this paper, we adopt a spatial regression method to break the performance limit, and introduce reinforcement learning techniques to further leverage semantic context information. We propose a novel Query-guided Regression network with Context policy (QRC Net) which jointly learns a Proposal Generation Network (PGN), a Query-guided Regression Network (QRN) and a Context Policy Network (CPN). Experiments show QRC Net provides a significant improvement in accuracy on two popular datasets: Flickr30K Entities and Referit Game, with 14.25% and 17.14% increase over the state-of-the-arts respectively. | 2017 | MSRC: Multimodal Spatial Regression with Semantic Context for Phrase GroundingabstractGiven an image and a natural language query phrase, a grounding system localizes the mentioned objects in the image according to the query's specifications. State-of-the-art methods address the problem by ranking a set of proposal bounding boxes according to the query's semantics, which makes them dependent on the performance of proposal generation systems. Besides, query phrases in one sentence may be semantically related in one sentence and can provide useful cues to ground objects. We propose a novel Multimodal Spatial Regression with semantic Context (MSRC) system which not only predicts the location of ground truth based on proposal bounding boxes, but also refines prediction results by penalizing similarities of different queries coming from same sentences. The advantages of MSRC are twofold: first, it removes the limitation of performance from proposal generation algorithms by using a spatial regression network. Second, MSRC not only encodes the semantics of a query phrase, but also deals with its relation with other queries in the same sentence (i.e., context) by a context refinement network. Experiments show MSRC system provides a significant improvement in accuracy on two popular datasets: Flickr30K Entities and Refer-it Game, with 6.64% and 5.28% increase over the state-of-the-arts respectively. | 2016 | Segment-based models for event detection and recountingabstractWe present a novel approach towards web video classification and recounting that uses video segments to model an event. This approach overcomes the limitations faced by the classical video-level models such as modeling semantics, identifying informative segments in a video and background segment suppression. We posit that segment-based models are able to identify both the frequently-occurring and rarer patterns in an event effectively, despite being trained on only a fraction of the training data. Our framework employs a discriminative approach to optimize our models in distributed and data-driven fashion while maintaining semantic interpretability. We evaluate the effectiveness of our approach on the challenging TRECVID MEDTest 2014 dataset. We demonstrate improvements in recounting and classification, particularly in events characterized by inherent intra-class variations. Rama Kovvuri, Ramakant Nevatia, Cees Snoek |

| 2016 | Tag-based video retrieval by embedding semantic content in a continuous word spaceabstractContent-based event retrieval in unconstrained web videos, based on query tags, is a hard problem due to large intra-class variances, and limited vocabulary and accuracy of the video concept detectors, creating a "semantic query gap". We present a technique to overcome this gap by using continuous word space representations to explicitly compute query and detector concept similarity. This not only allows for fast query-video similarity computation with implicit query expansion, but leads to a compact video representation, which allows implementation of a real-time retrieval system that can fit several thousand videos in a few hundred megabytes of memory. We evaluate the effectiveness of our representation on the challenging NIST MEDTest 2014 dataset. Arnav Agharwal, Rama Kovvuri, Ramakant Nevatia, Cees Snoek |
