| 2024 | Language Models as Science TutorsabstractNLP has recently made exciting progress toward training language models (LMs) with strong scientific problem-solving skills. However, model development has not focused on real-life use-cases of LMs for science, including applications in education that require processing long scientific documents. To address this, we introduce TutorEval and TutorChat. TutorEval is a diverse question-answering benchmark consisting of questions about long chapters from STEM textbooks, written by experts. TutorEval helps measure real-life usability of LMs as scientific assistants, and it is the first benchmark combining long contexts, free-form generation, and multi-disciplinary scientific knowledge. Moreover, we show that fine-tuning base models with existing dialogue datasets leads to poor performance on TutorEval. Therefore, we create TutorChat, a dataset of 80,000 long synthetic dialogues about textbooks. We use TutorChat to fine-tune Llemma models with 7B and 34B parameters. These LM tutors specialized in math have a 32K-token context window, and they excel at TutorEval while performing strongly on GSM8K and MATH. Our datasets build on open-source materials, and we release our models, data, and evaluations publicly. | 2023 | Online Nonstochastic Model-Free Reinforcement LearningabstractWe investigate robust model-free reinforcement learning algorithms designed for environments that may be dynamic or even adversarial. Traditional state-based policies often struggle to accommodate the challenges imposed by the presence of unmodeled disturbances in such settings. Moreover, optimizing linear state-based policies pose an obstacle for efficient optimization, leading to nonconvex objectives, even in benign environments like linear dynamical systems.
Drawing inspiration from recent advancements in model-based control, we intro- duce a novel class of policies centered on disturbance signals. We define several categories of these signals, which we term pseudo-disturbances, and develop corresponding policy classes based on them. We provide efficient and practical algorithms for optimizing these policies.
Next, we examine the task of online adaptation of reinforcement learning agents in the face of adversarial disturbances. Our methods seamlessly integrate with any black-box model-free approach, yielding provable regret guarantees when dealing with linear dynamics. These regret guarantees unconditionally improve the best-known results for bandit linear control in having no dependence on the state-space dimension. We evaluate our method over various standard RL benchmarks and demonstrate improved robustness. Udaya Ghai, Arushi Gupta, Wenhan Xia, Elad Hazan |

| 2020 | INVITED: Efficient Synthesis of Compact Deep Neural NetworksabstractDeep neural networks (DNNs) have been deployed in myriad machine learning applications. However, advances in their accuracy are often achieved with increasingly complex and deep network architectures. These large, deep models are often unsuitable for real-world applications, due to their massive computational cost, high memory bandwidth, and long latency. For example, autonomous driving requires fast inference based on Internet-of-Things (IoT) edge devices operating under run-time energy and memory storage constraints. In such cases, compact DNNs can facilitate deployment due to their reduced energy consumption, memory requirement, and inference latency. Long short-term memories (LSTMs) are a type of recurrent neural network that have also found widespread use in the context of sequential data modeling. They also face a model size vs. accuracy trade-off. In this paper, we review major approaches for automatically synthesizing compact, yet accurate, DNN/LSTM models suitable for real-world applications. We also outline some challenges and future areas of exploration. Wenhan Xia, Hongxu Yin, Niraj K. Jha |

| 2017 | No-Reference and Robust Image Sharpness Evaluation Based on Multiscale Spatial and Spectral FeaturesabstractThe human visual system exhibits multiscale characteristic when perceiving visual scenes. The hierarchical structures of an image are contained in its scale space representation, in which the image can be portrayed by a series of increasingly smoothed images. Inspired by this, this paper presents a no-reference and robust image sharpness evaluation (RISE) method by learning multiscale features extracted in both the spatial and spectral domains. For an image, the scale space is first built. Then sharpness-aware features are extracted in gradient domain and singular value decomposition domain, respectively. In order to take into account the impact of viewing distance on image quality, the input image is also down-sampled by several times, and the DCT-domain entropies are calculated as quality features. Finally, all features are utilized to learn a support vector regression model for sharpness prediction. Extensive experiments are conducted on four synthetically and two real blurred image databases. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed RISE metric is superior to the relevant state-of-the-art methods for evaluating both synthetic and real blurring. Furthermore, the proposed metric is robust, which means that it has very good generalization ability. Leida Li, Wenhan Xia, Weisi Lin, Yuming Fang 0001, Shiqi Wang 0001 |
