| 2025 | From Attention to Activation: Unraveling the Enigmas of Large Language ModelsabstractWe study two strange phenomena in auto-regressive Transformers: (1) the dominance of the first token in attention heads; (2) the occurrence of large outlier activations in the hidden states. We find that popular large language models, such as Llama attend maximally to the first token in 98% of attention heads, a behaviour we attribute to the softmax function. To mitigate this issue, we propose a reformulation of softmax to softmax-1. Furthermore, we identify adaptive optimisers, e.g. Adam, as the primary contributor to the large outlier activations and introduce OrthoAdam, a novel optimiser that utilises orthogonal matrices to transform gradients, to address this issue. Finally, not only do our methods prevent these phenomena from occurring, but additionally, they enable Transformers to sustain their performance when quantised using basic algorithms, something that standard methods are unable to do. In summary, our methods reduce the attention proportion on the first token from 65% to 3.3%, the activation kurtosis in the hidden states from 1657 to 3.1, and perplexity penalty under 4-bit weight quantisation from 3565 to 0.3. | 2025 | Binary Quantization Vision Transformer for Effective Segmentation of Red Tide in Multispectral Remote Sensing ImageryabstractAs a global marine disaster, red tides pose serious threats to marine ecology and the blue economy, making their monitoring crucial for preventing harmful algal blooms (HABs) and protecting the marine environment. In this study, satellite remote sensing was utilized to provide timely, large-scale, and continuous observation capabilities, overcoming the high cost and spatial and temporal limitations of in situ monitoring. However, existing remote sensing-based methods often exhibit coarse segmentation granularity and suffer from high computational complexity. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel bimodal multispectral dynamic offset binary quantization visual transformer (DoBi-SWiP-ViT) that utilizes the ViT for global feature aggregation and parameter quantization for efficient segmentation. With the bimodal Swin-ViT with unified perceptual parsing (UPP) architecture, our model integrates data from multiple spectral bands to achieve fine-grained segmentation of large-scale remote sensing images. Additionally, we introduce a dynamic magnitude offset binary quantization ViT block to reduce the parameter redundancy and improve the computational efficiency. In addition, we validated the performance of our model through extensive comparative experiments on high-resolution imagery datasets of sea surface red tides collected from different satellite platforms. The results show that our proposed DoBi-SWiP-ViT has significantly improved the mean accuracy (mAcc) of the segmentation results. For the two test areas acquired from different satellite platforms, the improvements are 8.78% and 10.18%, respectively. This has demonstrated the superior performance of our model in detecting the red tides from high-resolution visible images, highlighting its effectiveness in capturing complex patterns and subtle features in multispectral imagery. | 2024 | Three Heads Are Better than One: Complementary Experts for Long-Tailed Semi-supervised LearningabstractWe address the challenging problem of Long-Tailed Semi-Supervised Learning (LTSSL) where labeled data exhibit imbalanced class distribution and unlabeled data follow an unknown distribution. Unlike in balanced SSL, the generated pseudo-labels are skewed towards head classes, intensifying the training bias. Such a phenomenon is even amplified as more unlabeled data will be mislabeled as head classes when the class distribution of labeled and unlabeled datasets are mismatched. To solve this problem, we propose a novel method named ComPlementary Experts (CPE). Specifically, we train multiple experts to model various class distributions, each of them yielding high-quality pseudo-labels within one form of class distribution. Besides, we introduce Classwise Batch Normalization for CPE to avoid performance degradation caused by feature distribution mismatch between head and non-head classes. CPE achieves state-of-the-art performances on CIFAR-10-LT, CIFAR-100-LT, and STL-10-LT dataset benchmarks. For instance, on CIFAR-10-LT, CPE improves test accuracy by over >2.22% compared to baselines. Code is available at https://github.com/machengcheng2016/CPE-LTSSL. | 2023 | Understanding and Mitigating Overfitting in Prompt Tuning for Vision-Language ModelsabstractPretrained vision-language models (VLMs) such as CLIP have shown impressive generalization capability in downstream vision tasks with appropriate text prompts. Instead of designing prompts manually, Context Optimization (CoOp) has been recently proposed to learn continuous prompts using task-specific training data. Despite the performance improvements on downstream tasks, several studies have reported that CoOp suffers from the overfitting issue in two aspects: (i) the test accuracy on base classes first improves and then worsens during training; (ii) the test accuracy on novel classes keeps decreasing. However, none of the existing studies can understand and mitigate such overfitting problems. In this study, we first explore the cause of overfitting by analyzing the gradient flow. Comparative experiments reveal that CoOp favors generalizable and spurious features in the early and later training stages, respectively, leading to the non-overfitting and overfitting phenomena. Given those observations, we propose Subspace Prompt Tuning (Sub PT) to project the gradients in back-propagation onto the low-rank subspace spanned by the early-stage gradient flow eigenvectors during the entire training process and successfully eliminate the overfitting problem. In addition, we equip CoOp with a Novel Feature Learner (NFL) to enhance the generalization ability of the learned prompts onto novel categories beyond the training set, needless of image training data. Extensive experiments on 11 classification datasets demonstrate that Sub PT+NFL consistently boost the performance of CoOp and outperform the state-of-the-art CoCoOp approach. Experiments on more challenging vision downstream tasks, including open-vocabulary object detection and zero-shot semantic segmentation, also verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. | 2022 | A Multimodal Method for Chinese Spelling CorrectionabstractChinese spelling check (CSC) is a task that is both challenging and important, with wide applications in many fields. This paper proposes a multimodal approach to CSC problems, which takes comprehensive consideration of three aspects of knowledge for detecting and correcting Chinese spelling errors, namely, glyph, pinyin and semantic. Our method uses vision transformer, GRU+CNN, and Bert to extract the glyph, pinyin and semantic characteristics respectively, and averages the three embeddings to generate the final multimodal representation, which is fed into a transformer to check and correct possible errors. Our method is trained and tested on standard SIGHAN data sets, and the precision, recall and F1 scores on both character-level and sentence-level show that our method has gained significant improvement over BERT. | 2021 | Towards Effective Adversarial Attack Against 3D Point Cloud ClassificationabstractIn the domain of 3D point cloud classification, deep learning based classifiers have made significant progress, while they have been also proven to be vulnerable on the adversarial at-tack at the same time. Some recent works employ the attack methods that devised for image classification such as projected gradient descent (PGD) to attack the 3D classifiers, but their performances seem quite limited when faced with statistical operations including point cloud denoising and point cloud upsampling. In this paper, we propose ‘SmoothAttack’, a new attack that can craft adversarial point clouds robust to statistical operations. SmoothAttack can be easily applied in both global constraint and pointwise constraint. Besides, we analyze the directions of perturbations onto the point cloud during the iteration process, where SmoothAttack can some-how stabilize the direction and make full use of the adversarial budgets. Experiments validate that our ‘SmoothAttack’ can raise the attack success rates against statistical defenses up to 98% for untargeted attack and 91% for targeted attack on ModelNet40 database when fooling the classifiers Point-Net and DGCNN. | 2018 | Synthesizing cloth wrinkles by CNN-based geometry image superresolutionabstractAbstract We propose a novel deep learning‐based method, called mesh superresolution, to enrich low‐resolution (LR) cloth meshes with wrinkles. A pair of low and high‐resolution (HR) meshes are simulated, with the simulation of the HR mesh tracks with that of the LR mesh. The frame data are converted into geometry images and used as a training data set. A residual network, called SR residual network, is employed to train an image synthesizer that superresolves an LR image into an HR one. Once the HR image is converted back to an HR mesh, it is abundant in wrinkles compared with its coarse counterpart. The synthesizing is very efficient and is 24× faster than a full HR simulation. We demonstrate the performances of mesh superresolution with various simulation scenes. Juntao Ye, Liguo Jiang, Chengcheng Ma, Zhanglin Cheng, Xiaopeng Zhang 0001 |

| 2016 | Scene classification of high resolution remote sensing images using convolutional neural networksabstractScene classification of high resolution remote sensing images plays an important role for a wide range of applications. While significant efforts have been made in developing various methods for scene classification, most of them are based on handcrafted or shallow learning-based features. In this paper, we investigate the use of deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for scene classification. To this end, we first adopt two simple and effective strategies to extract CNN features: (1) using pre-trained CNN models as universal feature extractors, and (2) domain-specifically fine-tuning pre-trained CNN models on our scene classification dataset. Then, scene classification is carried out by using simple classifiers such as linear support vector machine (SVM). In our work, three off-the-shelf CNN models including AlexNet [1], VGGNet [2], and GoogleNet [3] are investigated. Comprehensive evaluations on a publicly available 21 classes land use dataset and comparisons with several state-of-the-art approaches demonstrate that deep CNN features are effective for scene classification of high resolution remote sensing images.
