| 2025 | OmnixR: Evaluating Omni-modality Language Models on Reasoning across ModalitiesabstractWe introduce \textbf{OmnixR}, an evaluation suite designed to benchmark state-of-the-art Omni-modality Language Models (OLMs), such as GPT-4o and Gemini.
Evaluating OLMs, which integrate multiple modalities such as text, vision, and audio, presents unique challenges.
Particularly, the user message might often consist of multiple modalities, such that OLMs have to establish holistic understanding and reasoning across modalities to accomplish the task.
Existing benchmarks are limited to single-modality or dual-modality tasks (e.g., image+text or video+text), overlooking comprehensive multi-modal assessments of model reasoning.
To address this, OmnixR offers two evaluation variants: (1) OmnixR-synth: a synthetic dataset generated automatically by translating text into multiple modalities—audio, images, video, and hybrids Omnify!. (2) OmnixR-real: a real-world dataset, manually curated and annotated by experts, for evaluating cross-modal reasoning in natural settings.
OmnixR presents a unique evaluation towards assessing OLMs over a diverse mix of modalities, such as a question that involves video, audio, and text, providing a rigorous cross-modal reasoning testbed than any existing benchmarks.
Our experiments find that all state-of-the-art OLMs struggles with OmnixR questions that require integrating information from multiple modalities to answer.
Further analysis highlight differences in reasoning behavior and underscoring the challenges of omni-modal AI alignment. Lichang Chen, Hexiang Hu, Yandong Li, Pranav Shyam, Tianyi Zhou 0001, Heng Huang 0001, Ming-Hsuan Yang 0001, Boqing Gong |

| 2022 | GLIDE: Towards Photorealistic Image Generation and Editing with Text-Guided Diffusion ModelsabstractDiffusion models have recently been shown to generate high-quality synthetic images, especially when paired with a guidance technique to trade off diversity for fidelity. We explore diffusion models for the problem of text-conditional image synthesis and compare two different guidance strategies: CLIP guidance and classifier-free guidance. We find that the latter is preferred by human evaluators for both photorealism and caption similarity, and often produces photorealistic samples. Samples from a 3.5 billion parameter text-conditional diffusion model using classifier-free guidance are favored by human evaluators to those from DALL-E, even when the latter uses expensive CLIP reranking. Additionally, we find that our models can be fine-tuned to perform image inpainting, enabling powerful text-driven image editing. We train a smaller model on a filtered dataset and release the code and weights at https://github.com/openai/glide-text2im. | 2020 | Language Models are Few-Shot LearnersabstractWe demonstrate that scaling up language models greatly improves task-agnostic, few-shot performance, sometimes even becoming competitive with prior state-of-the-art fine-tuning approaches. Specifically, we train GPT-3, an autoregressive language model with 175 billion parameters, 10x more than any previous non-sparse language model, and test its performance in the few-shot setting. For all tasks, GPT-3 is applied without any gradient updates or fine-tuning, with tasks and few-shot demonstrations specified purely via text interaction with the model. GPT-3 achieves strong performance on many NLP datasets, including translation, question-answering, and cloze tasks. We also identify some datasets where GPT-3's few-shot learning still struggles, as well as some datasets where GPT-3 faces methodological issues related to training on large web corpora. Tom B. | 2019 | Model-Based Active ExplorationabstractEfficient exploration is an unsolved problem in Reinforcement Learning which is usually addressed by reactively rewarding the agent for fortuitously encountering novel situations. This paper introduces an efficient active exploration algorithm, Model-Based Active eXploration (MAX), which uses an ensemble of forward models to plan to observe novel events. This is carried out by optimizing agent behaviour with respect to a measure of novelty derived from the Bayesian perspective of exploration, which is estimated using the disagreement between the futures predicted by the ensemble members. We show empirically that in semi-random discrete environments where directed exploration is critical to make progress, MAX is at least an order of magnitude more efficient than strong baselines. MAX scales to high-dimensional continuous environments where it builds task-agnostic models that can be used for any downstream task. Pranav Shyam, Wojciech Jaskowski, Faustino Gomez |

| 2017 | Attentive Recurrent ComparatorsabstractRapid learning requires flexible representations to quickly adopt to new evidence. We develop a novel class of models called Attentive Recurrent Comparators (ARCs) that form representations of objects by cycling through them and making observations. Using the representations extracted by ARCs, we develop a way of approximating a dynamic representation space and use it for one-shot learning. In the task of one-shot classification on the Omniglot dataset, we achieve the state of the art performance with an error rate of 1.5\%. This represents the first super-human result achieved for this task with a generic model that uses only pixel information. Pranav Shyam, Ambedkar Dukkipati |
