2023 VTQAGen: BART-based Generative Model For Visual Text Question Answering
abstract
Visual Text Question Answering (VTQA) is a challenging task that requires answering questions pertaining to visual content by combining image understanding and language comprehension. The main objective is to develop models that can accurately provide relevant answers based on complementary information from both images and text, as well as the semantic meaning of the question. Despite ongoing efforts, the VTQA task presents several challenges, including multimedia alignment, multi-step cross-media reasoning, and handling open-ended questions. This paper introduces a novel generative framework called VTQAGen, which leverages a Multi- modal Attention Layer to combine image-text pairs and question inputs, as well as a BART-based model for reasoning and entity extraction from both images and text. The framework incorporates a step-based ensemble method to enhance model performance and generalization ability. VTQAGen utilizes an encoder-decoder generative model based on BART. Faster R-CNN is employed to extract visual regions of interest, while BART's encoder is modified to handle multi-modal interaction. The decoder stage utilizes the shift-predict approach and introduces step-based logits fusion to improve stability and accuracy. In the experiments, the proposed VTQAGen demonstrates superior performance on the testing set, securing second place in the ACM Multimedia Visual Text Question Answer Challenge.

2023 An extensive benchmark study on biomedical text generation and mining with ChatGPT
abstract
MOTIVATION: In recent years, the development of natural language process (NLP) technologies and deep learning hardware has led to significant improvement in large language models (LLMs). The ChatGPT, the state-of-the-art LLM built on GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, shows excellent capabilities in general language understanding and reasoning. Researchers also tested the GPTs on a variety of NLP-related tasks and benchmarks and got excellent results. With exciting performance on daily chat, researchers began to explore the capacity of ChatGPT on expertise that requires professional education for human and we are interested in the biomedical domain. RESULTS: To evaluate the performance of ChatGPT on biomedical-related tasks, this article presents a comprehensive benchmark study on the use of ChatGPT for biomedical corpus, including article abstracts, clinical trials description, biomedical questions, and so on. Typical NLP tasks like named entity recognization, relation extraction, sentence similarity, question and answering, and document classification are included. Overall, ChatGPT got a BLURB score of 58.50 while the state-of-the-art model had a score of 84.30. Through a series of experiments, we demonstrated the effectiveness and versatility of ChatGPT in biomedical text understanding, reasoning and generation, and the limitation of ChatGPT build on GPT-3.5. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: All the datasets are available from BLURB benchmark https://microsoft.github.io/BLURB/index.html. The prompts are described in the article.

2020 Multimodal Deep Learning for Social Media Popularity Prediction With Attention Mechanism
abstract
Social media popularity estimation refers to predict the post's popularity using multimodal contents. The prediction performance heavily relies on the feature extraction part and fully leveraging multimodal heterogeneous data is of a great challenge in the practical settings. Despite remarkable progress have been made, most of the previous attempts are restrained from the essentially limited property of the employed single modality. Inspired by the recent success of multimodal learning, we propose a novel multimodal deep learning framework for the popularity prediction task, which aims to leverage the complementary knowledge from different modalities. Moreover, an attention mechanism is introduced in our framework, with the goal to assign large weights to specified modalities during the training and inference phases. To empirically investigate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach, we conduct extensive experiments on the 2020 SMP challenge. The obtained results show that the proposed framework outperforms related approaches.
