2025 PhysCL: Knowledge-Aware Contrastive Learning of Physiological Signal Models for Cuff-Less Blood Pressure Estimation
abstract
Training deep learning models for photoplethysmography(PPG)-based cuff-less blood pressure estimation often requires a substantial amount of labeled data collected through sophisticated medical instruments, posing significant challenges in practical applications. To address this issue, we propose Physiological Knowledge-Aware Contrastive Learning (PhysCL), a novel approach designed to reduce the dependence on labeled PPG data while improving blood pressure estimation accuracy. Specifically, PhysCL tackles the semantic consistency problem in contrastive learning by introducing a knowledge-aware augmentation bank, which generates positive physiological signal pairs using knowledge-based constraints during the contrastive pair generation. Additionally, we propose a contrastive feature reconstruction method to enhance feature diversity and prevent model collapse through feature re-sampling and re-weighting. We evaluate PhysCL on data from 106 subjects across the MIMIC III, MIMIC IV, and UQVS datasets under cross-dataset validation settings, comparing it against state-of-the-art contrastive learning methods and blood pressure estimation models. PhysCL achieves an average mean absolute error of 9.5/5.9 mmHg (systolic/diastolic) across the three datasets, using only 2% labeled data combined with 98% unlabeled data for pre-training and 5 samples for personalization, which represents a 6.2% /4.3% improvement, respectively, over the current best supervised methods. The ablation study provides further convincing evidence that the unlabeled data can be utilized to improve the existing cuff-less blood pressure estimation models and shed light on unsupervised contrastive learning for physiological signals.

2023 Auto-Augmentation Contrastive Learning for Wearable-based Human Activity Recognition
abstract
For low-semantic sensor signals from human activity recognition (HAR), contrastive learning (CL) is essential to implement novel applications or generic models without manual annotation, which is a high-performance self-supervised learning (SSL) method. However, CL relies heavily on data augmentation for pairwise comparisons. Especially for low semantic data in the HAR area, conducting good performance augmentation strategies in pretext tasks still rely on manual attempts lacking generalizability and flexibility. To reduce the augmentation burden, we propose an end-to-end auto-augmentation contrastive learning (AutoCL) method for wearable-based HAR. AutoCL is based on a Siamese network architecture that shares the parameters of the backbone and with a generator embedded to learn auto-augmentation. AutoCL trains the generator based on the representation in the latent space to overcome the disturbances caused by noise and redundant information in raw sensor data. The architecture empirical study indicates the effectiveness of this design. Furthermore, we propose a stop-gradient design and correlation reduction strategy in AutoCL to enhance encoder representation learning. Extensive experiments based on four wide-used HAR datasets demonstrate that the proposed AutoCL method significantly improves recognition accuracy compared with other SOTA methods.

2021 MLCask: Efficient Management of Component Evolution in Collaborative Data Analytics Pipelines
abstract
With the ever-increasing adoption of machine learning for data analytics, maintaining a machine learning pipeline is becoming more complex as both the datasets and trained models evolve with time. In a collaborative environment, the changes and updates due to pipeline evolution often cause cumbersome coordination and maintenance work, raising the costs and making it hard to use. Existing solutions, unfortunately, do not address the version evolution problem, especially in a collaborative environment where non-linear version control semantics are necessary to isolate operations made by different user roles. The lack of version control semantics also incurs unnecessary storage consumption and lowers efficiency due to data duplication and repeated data pre-processing, which are avoidable. In this paper, we identify two main challenges that arise during the deployment of machine learning pipelines, and address them with the design of versioning for an end-to-end analytics system MLCask. The system supports multiple user roles with the ability to perform Git-like branching and merging operations in the context of the machine learning pipelines. We define and accelerate the metric-driven merge operation by pruning the pipeline search tree using reusable history records and pipeline compatibility information. Further, we design and implement the prioritized pipeline search, which gives preference to the pipelines that probably yield better performance. The effectiveness of MLCask is evaluated through an extensive study over several real-world deployment cases. The performance evaluation shows that the proposed merge operation is up to 7.8x faster and saves up to 11.9x storage space than the baseline method that does not utilize history records.

2021 A review of computer graphics approaches to urban modeling from a machine learning perspective
abstract
Urban modeling facilitates the generation of virtual environments for various scenarios about cities. It requires expertise and consideration, and therefore consumes massive time and computation resources. Nevertheless, related tasks sometimes result in dissatisfaction or even failure. These challenges have received significant attention from researchers in the area of computer graphics. Meanwhile, the burgeoning development of artificial intelligence motivates people to exploit machine learning, and hence improves the conventional solutions. In this paper, we present a review of approaches to urban modeling in computer graphics using machine learning in the literature published between 2010 and 2019. This serves as an overview of the current state of research on urban modeling from a machine learning perspective.

2020 The Disruptions of 5G on Data-Driven Technologies and Applications
abstract
With 5G on the verge of being adopted as the next mobile network, there is a need to analyze its impact on the landscape of computing and data management. In this paper, we analyze the impact of 5G on both traditional and emerging technologies and project our view on future research challenges and opportunities. With a predicted increase of 10-100× in bandwidth and 5-10x decrease in latency, 5G is expected to be the main enabler for smart cities, smart IoT and efficient healthcare, where machine learning is conducted at the edge. In this context, we investigate how 5G can help the development of federated learning. Network slicing, another key feature of 5G, allows running multiple isolated networks on the same physical infrastructure. However, security remains the main concern in the context of virtualization, multi-tenancy and high device density. Formal verification of 5G networks can be applied to detect security issues in massive virtualized environments. In summary, 5G will make the world even more densely and closely connected. What we have experienced in 4G connectivity will pale in comparison to the vast amounts of possibilities engendered by 5G.

2018 Estimating SpO2 via Time-Efficient High-Resolution Harmonics Analysis and Maximum Likelihood Tracking
abstract
The accuracy of noninvasive oxygen saturation (SpO2), which is defined by the measurements based on photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals, is intensively affected by motion artifacts (MAs) and low perfusion. This study introduces a novel approach called ESPRIT-MLT to measure SpO2when such interferences are present. In contrast to previous studies, the work focuses on the harmonic model of the PPG signal and the probability model of results from harmonic analysis. The optimized parametric ESPRIT method is applied to improve the accuracy of harmonic power estimation, and the maximum likelihood SpO2tracking (MLT) technique is proposed to track the most probable uncontaminated harmonic of heart rate frequency. We construct an evaluation platform for testing the proposed method via generated signals and subject tests. Compared with the nonparametric periodogram method, the probability of correct harmonics being found is improved by 18.7% or 19.7%, when the signal is contaminated by motion artifacts or affected by low perfusion, respectively. In comparison with the reference methods, the proposed ESPRIT-MLT method exhibits a lower average root mean square error (RMSE) (1.17%) in the simulation using an MA-contaminated PPG signal, and a lower RMSE (2.70%) in the simulation using an extremely low (0.05%) perfusion index. A comprehensive subject test that consists of 4 activities and 20 subjects shows an average RMSE of 0.84% (± 0.44%). Furthermore, the time-efficiency is optimized to be adaptable with wearable devices. Therefore, the proposed method has potential in enhancing the performance of clinical pulse oximetry and wearable SpO2measurement devices for daily use.
