| 2026 | WALKSAFE: Risk-aware Graph Random Walk with Bi-GRPO for LLM SafetyabstractLarge language models (LLMs) may generate harmful outputs on malicious inputs. Existing safety methods, including prompt engineering and model editing, rely on hand-crafted templates or target-driven parameter modifications, limiting their generalizability in unseen harmful scenarios. Post-training aims to ensure LLM safety in general domains via supervised fine-tuning (SFT) or reinforcement learning (RL) on diverse malicious inputs. SFT needs annotated refusal samples while RL learns to refuse risk by exploring diverse harmful inputs. However, these methods tend to harshly refuse over any possible risks, sacrificing potentially useful information and degrading model utility. We argue that realistic malicious inputs often mix both harmful and helpful semantics (i.e., entities and relations), and LLMs should identify and remove only harmful relations while preserving useful ones. Thus, the original malicious user inputs can shift into safe queries, to which LLMs can respond safely and helpfully. In this paper, we propose WALKSAFE, a graph-based risk-aware training framework that enables LLMs to identify potential risks of key semantics (entities and relations) in user inputs via graph structure. By filtering harmful relations, LLMs can respond to safe input queries and then generate their corresponding safe and helpful responses. First, we model all entities and relations in the inputs with a graph structure. Second, we adopt a risk-aware random walk on the graph to quantify potential risk under multiple entities and relations. Then, we reconstruct safe queries by filtering harmful relations to promote the LLM to answer safely and helpfully rather than with direct refusals. Finally, we propose Bi-GRPO to post-train LLMs. As vanilla GRPO conducts only the intra-group comparison, Bi-GRPO performs both intra-group and inter-group comparisons between different response groups. The extra inter-group rewards encourage the model to distinguish harmful and safe semantics, and thus prefer safe and helpful responses. Experiments on three LLMs show that our models obtain SOTA results. Shilong Pan, Zhiliang Tian, Wanlong Yu, Zhen Huang 0006, Qingyu Qiu, Zhonghao Sun 0001, Minlie Huang, Dongsheng Li 0001 |

| 2026 | Rethinking the Hidden Risk of Reranking: Achieving Risk-aware Reranking with Information Gain for RAG with LLMsabstractRetrieval-augmented generation (RAG) has become a cornerstone for enhancing large language models (LLMs) with real-time information from the Web, but its performance often heavily depends on the quality of the retrieved documents. Given that RAG systems frequently draw from vast and often noisy Web corpora, ensuring the reliability of retrieved content is paramount. While rerankers improve the factual accuracy of the RAG system by elevating the proportion of ground-truth documents (GD) in high-ranked results, the shifts of document type distributions during reranking remain unclear, hindering the understanding of the reranker's behavior. To bridge this gap, we conduct an empirical study to categorize documents and compare their distribution before and after reranking. We reveal a counterintuitive finding: though rerankers improve the proportion of GD, they also significantly increase the proportion of harmful documents (HD) in top-ranked retrieved documents. It not only narrows the potential context window for ranking the GD higher but also increases the risk of HD misleading the LLMs, potentially leading to the generation and propagation of misinformation across Web platforms. Motivated by this finding, we propose a risk-aware reranking method for RAG with LLMs, which balances the risk and benefit during reranking. Given a query, the RAG framework first retrieves relevant documents. Then, our approach quantifies the potential beneficial and harmful impacts of various documents on the LLMs' generation. To estimate the impacts, we conduct a dual-aspect document impact assessment via information gain, which employs a risk clipping to avoid the numerical fluctuations in the estimation. Finally, we conduct the reranking according to the potential impact of each document, enabling the reranker to significantly reduce the HD proportion. Experiments and analysis across multiple models and datasets, including Wikipedia, web news, and research papers, show the effectiveness of our method. | 2026 | AttriPrompt: Class Attribute-Aware Prompt Tuning for Vision-Language ModelabstractPrompt tuning has proven to be an effective alternative for fine-tuning the pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs) to downstream tasks. Among existing approaches, class-shared prompts learn a unified prompt shared across all classes, while sample-specific prompts generate distinct prompts tailored to each individual sample. However, both approaches often struggle to adequately capture the unique characteristics of underrepresented classes, particularly in imbalanced scenarios where data for tail classes is scarce. To alleviate this issue, we propose an attribute-aware prompt tuning framework that prompts a more balanced understanding for imbalance tasks by explicitly modeling critical class-level attributes. The key intuition is that, from the perspective of class, essential attributes tend to be relatively consistent across classes, regardless of sample sizes. Specifically, we build an attribute pool to learn potential semantic attributes of classes based on VLMs. For each input sample, we generate a unique attribute-aware prompt by selecting the relevant class attributes from the pool through a matching mechanism. This design enables the model to capture essential class semantics and generate informative prompts, even for classes with limited data. Additionally, we introduce a ProAdapter module to facilitate the transfer of foundational knowledge from VLMs while enhancing generalization to underrepresented classes in imbalanced settings. Extensive experiments on standard and imbalance few-shot tasks demonstrate that our model achieves superior performance especially in tail classes. | 2026 | LLM-Driven Adversarial Example Synthesis for Emerging Topic Rumor Detection on Social MediaabstractRumor detection is essential for building a responsible web and internet ecosystem, which has attracted significant attention from the research community. However, emerging topic rumor detection, i.e., identify rumors at the early stages of a topic's emergence where only limited discussions can be observed, still remains a challenge. Technically, this scenario is accompanied by the issues ofdata scarcityon emerging topics and thedata distribution discrepancybetween old topics and emerging new topic. In this paper, we propose a new framework termedLLM-drivenADversarialExampleSynthesis (LADES) for emerging topic rumor detection. LADES utilizes Large Language Models (LLMs) for generating readable and contextually coherent adversarial examples. The generated adversarial examples not only expand the training set to tackle the data scarcity issue, but also act as a bridge to connect the data distribution of old and new topics. To overcome training instability in adversarial example generation, LADES introduces a gradient-free Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling method. This method ensures adversarial examples are readable and contextually coherent by harnessing LLMs, while promoting effective attacks through entropy-based sampling that targets model uncertainty. To mitigate the impact of potential mislabeling in synthetic data, LADES implements a meta-mixed-learning mechanism. This mechanism dynamically adjusts the weights of synthetic adversarial examples, guided by limited labeled data from emerging topics, thereby alleviating the data noise. | 2025 | Zero-resource Hallucination Detection for Text Generation via Graph-based Contextual Knowledge Triples ModelingabstractLLMs obtain remarkable performance but suffer from hallucinations. Most research on detecting hallucination focuses on questions with short and concrete correct answers that are easy to check faithfulness. Hallucination detections for text generation with open-ended answers are more hard. Some researchers use external knowledge to detect hallucinations in generated texts, but external resources for specific scenarios are hard to access. Recent studies on detecting hallucinations in long texts without external resources conduct consistency comparison among multiple sampled outputs. To handle long texts, researchers split long texts into multiple facts and individually compare the consistency of each pair of facts. However, these methods (1) hardly achieve alignment among multiple facts; (2) overlook dependencies between multiple contextual facts. In this paper, we propose a graph-based context-aware (GCA) hallucination detection method for text generations, which aligns facts and considers the dependencies between contextual facts in consistency comparison. Particularly, to align multiple facts, we conduct a triple-oriented response segmentation to extract multiple knowledge triples. To model dependencies among contextual triples (facts), we construct contextual triples into a graph and enhance triples’ interactions via message passing and aggregating via RGCN. To avoid the omission of knowledge triples in long texts, we conduct an LLM-based reverse verification by reconstructing the knowledge triples. Experiments show that our model enhances hallucination detection and excels all baselines. | 2025 | Partial Order-centered Hyperbolic Representation Learning for Few-shot Relation ExtractionabstractPrototype network-based methods have made substantial progress in few-shot relation extraction (FSRE) by enhancing relation prototypes with relation descriptions. However, the distribution of relations and instances in distinct representation spaces isolates the constraints of relations on instances, making relation prototypes biased. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end partial order-centered hyperbolic representation learning (PO-HRL) framework, which imposes the constraints of relations on instances by modeling partial order in hyperbolic space, so as to effectively learn the distribution of instance representations. Specifically, we develop the hyperbolic supervised contrastive learning based on Lorentzian cosine similarity to align representations of relations and instances, and model the partial order by constraining instances to reside within the Lorentzian entailment cone of their respective relation. Experiments on three benchmark datasets show that PO-HRL outperforms the strong baselines, especially in 1-shot settings lacking relation descriptions. | 2025 | Interpreting Object-level Foundation Models via Visual Precision SearchabstractAdvances in multimodal pre-training have propelled object-level foundation models, such as Grounding DINO and Florence-2, in tasks like visual grounding and object detection. However, interpreting these models’ decisions has grown increasingly challenging. Existing interpretable attribution methods for object-level task interpretation have notable limitations: (1) gradient-based methods lack precise localization due to visual-textual fusion in foundation models, and (2) perturbation-based methods produce noisy saliency maps, limiting fine-grained interpretability. To address these, we propose a Visual Precision Search method that generates accurate attribution maps with fewer regions. Our method bypasses internal model parameters to overcome attribution issues from multimodal fusion, dividing inputs into sparse sub-regions and using consistency and collaboration scores to accurately identify critical decision-making regions. We also conducted a theoretical analysis of the boundary guarantees and scope of applicability of our method. Experiments on RefCOCO, MS COCO, and LVIS show our approach enhances object-level task interpretability over SOTA for Grounding DINO and Florence-2 across various evaluation metrics, with faithfulness gains of 23.7%, 31.6%, and 20.1% on MS COCO, LVIS, and RefCOCO for Grounding DINO, and 50.7% and 66.9% on MS COCO and RefCOCO for Florence-2. Additionally, our method can interpret failures in visual grounding and object detection tasks, surpassing existing methods across multiple evaluation metrics. | 2025 | GCML: Gradient Coherence Guided Meta-Learning for Cross-Domain Emerging Topic Rumor DetectionabstractWith the emergence of new topics on social media as sources of rumor propagation, addressing the domain shift between the source and target domain and the target domain samples scarcity remains a crucial task in cross-domain rumor detection.Traditional deep learningbased methods and LLM-based methods are mostly focused on the in-domain condition, thus having poor performance in cross-domain setting.Existing domain adaptation rumor detection approaches ignore the data generalization differences and rely on a large amount of unlabeled target domain samples to achieve domain adaptation, resulting in less effective on emerging topic rumor detection. In this paper, we propose a Gradient Coherence guided Meta-Learning approach (GCML) for emerging topics rumor detection.Firstly, we calculate the task generalization score of each source task (sampled from source domain) from a gradient coherence perspective, and selectively learn more "generalizable" tasks that are more beneficial in adapting to the target domain.Secondly, we leverage meta-learning to alleviate the target domain samples scarcity, which utilizes task generalization scores to re-weight metatest gradients and adaptively updates learning rate.Extensive experimental results on realworld datasets show that our method substantially outperforms SOTA baselines. | 2025 | LTOS: Layout-controllable Text-object Synthesis via Adaptive Cross-attention FusionsabstractControllable text-to-image generation synthesizes visual text and objects in images with certain conditions. However, existing visual text rendering and layout-to-image generation tasks focus on single modality generation or rendering, leaving yet-to-be-bridged gaps between the approaches correspondingly designed for each of the tasks. In this paper, we introduce a unified task called layout-controllable text-object synthesis (LTOS), which merges text rendering and layout-based object generation. We construct a layout-aware text-object synthesis dataset for the LTOS task, containing well-aligned labels visual text, and object information. We also propose a layout-controllable text-object adaptive fusion (TOF) model, which generates images with legible visual text and plausible objects. Specifically, we construct a visual-text rendering to synthesize text and employ an object-layout control module to generate objects while integrating the two modules to harmoniously generate and integrate text and objects in images. To enhance the image-text integration, we propose a self-adaptive cross-attention fusion that forces the image generation to attend more to important text spans. Within such a fusion, we use a self-adaptive learnable factor to learn to control the influence of cross-attention outputs. Experiments show that our model excels the strong baselines and obtain SOTA in LTOS. We release our dataset and codes1. Yu Lai, Zhiliang Tian, Zhen Huang 0006, Zejiang He |

| 2025 | HyperMST: Multi-scale Spatio-Temporal Hypercorrelation Network for POI RecommendationabstractPoint-of-Interest (POI) recommendation has become increasingly important in the trajectory prediction domain. However, most existing approaches focus on a single scale and tend to overemphasize either spatial or temporal aspects. These methods often overlook the temporal dependencies in movement behavior and fail to fully exploit the interplay between spatial and temporal correlations, which limits their overall effectiveness. In this paper, we propose a Multi-scale Spatio-Temporal Hypercorrelation Network (HyperMST) for POI recommendation. HyperMST leverages geographic and historical information through cross-shared Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs), while employing a multi-scale hypergraph attention mechanism to capture dynamic POI correlations across varying temporal scales. Furthermore, the model enhances prediction accuracy by incorporating memory-enhanced embeddings and a spatio-temporal coherence mechanism. Extensive experiments on two real-world public datasets demonstrate that our model significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, establishing a new benchmark in POI recommendation. | 2025 | Hippocampal-like Sequential Editing for Continual Knowledge Updates in Large Language ModelsabstractLarge language models (LLMs) are now pivotal in real-world applications. Model editing has emerged as a promising paradigm for efficiently modifying LLMs without full retraining. However, current editing approaches face significant limitations due to parameter drift, which stems from inconsistencies between newly edited knowledge and the model's existing knowledge. In sequential editing scenarios, cumulative drifts progressively lead to model collapse characterized by general capability degradation and balance between acquiring new knowledge and catastrophic forgetting of existing knowledge. Drawing inspiration from the hippocampal trisynaptic circuit for continual memorizing and forgetting, we propose a Hippocampal-like Sequential Editing (HSE) framework that designs the unlearning of obsolete knowledge, domain-specific knowledge update separation and replay for edited knowledge. Specifically, the HSE framework designs three core mechanisms: (1) Machine unlearning selectively erases outdated knowledge to facilitate integration of new information, (2) Fisher Information Matrix-guided parameter updates prevents cross-domain knowledge interference, and (3) Parameter replay consolidates long-term editing memory through lightweight and global replay of editing data in a parametric form. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that HSE achieves smaller generalization error bounds, more stable convergence and higher computational efficiency. Experimental results validate its effective balance between acquiring new knowledge and mitigating catastrophic forgetting, maintaining or even slightly enhancing general capabilities. In practical applications, experiments confirm its effectiveness in multi-domain hallucination mitigation, healthcare knowledge injecting, and societal bias reduction. | 2025 | Scenario-independent Uncertainty Estimation for LLM-based Question Answering via Factor AnalysisabstractLarge language models (LLMs) demonstrate significant potential in various applications; however, they are susceptible to generating hallucinations, which can lead to the spread of online misinformation. Existing studies address hallucination detection by (1) employing reference-based methods that consult external resources for verification or (2) utilizing reference-free methods that mainly estimate answer uncertainty based on LLM's internal states. However, reference-based methods incur significant costs and can be infeasible for obtaining reliable external references. Besides, existing uncertainty estimation (UE) methods often overlook the impact of scenario backgrounds inherited from the query's lexical resources, leading to noise in UE. In almost all real-world applications, users care about the uncertainty concerning semantics or facts instead of the query's scenario information. Therefore, we argue that mitigating scenario-related noise and focusing on semantic information can yield a more desirable UE. In this paper, we introduce a plug-and-play scenario-independent framework to enhance unsupervised UE in LLMs by removing scenario-related noise and focusing on semantic information. This framework is compatible with most existing UE methods, as it leverages only the existing UE methods' outputs. Specifically, we design a scenario-specific sampling to paraphrase queries, maintaining their common semantics while diversifying the scenario distribution. Subsequently, to estimate the contribution of the common semantics, we design a factor analysis (FA) model to disentangle the UE score obtained from the given UE method into a combination of multiple latent factors, which represent the contribution of the common semantics and scenario-related noise. By solving the FA model, we decompose the impact of the most significant factor to approximate the uncertainty caused by the common semantics, thus achieving scenario-independent UE. Extensive experiments and analysis across multiple models and datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. | 2025 | Generalized Semantic Contrastive Learning via Embedding Side Information for Few-Shot Object DetectionabstractThe objective of few-shot object detection (FSOD) is to detect novel objects with few training samples. The core challenge of this task is how to construct a generalized feature space for novel categories with limited data on the basis of the base category space, which could adapt the learned detection model to unknown scenarios. Most existing fine-tuning-based approaches tackle the challenge via pre-training a feature extractor based on the base categories and then fine-tuning the detector through the novel categories. However, limited by insufficient samples for novel categories, two issues still exist: (1) the features of the novel category are easily implicitly represented by the features of the base category, leading to inseparable classifier boundaries, (2) novel categories with fewer data are not enough to fully represent the distribution, where the model fine-tuning is prone to overfitting. To address these issues, we introduce the side information to alleviate the negative influences derived from the feature space and sample viewpoints and formulate a novel generalized feature representation learning method for FSOD. Specifically, we first utilize embedding side information to construct a knowledge matrix to quantify the semantic relationship between the base and novel categories. Then, to strengthen the discrimination between semantically similar categories, we further develop contextual semantic supervised contrastive learning which embeds side information. Furthermore, to prevent overfitting problems caused by sparse samples, a side-information guided region-aware masked module is introduced to augment the diversity of samples, which finds and abandons biased information that discriminates between similar categories via counterfactual explanation, and refines the discriminative representation space further. Finally, we theoretically analyze the generalization bound for introducing our proposed module and demonstrate that our proposed model can effectively reduce the upper bound of the generalization error. Extensive experiments using ResNet and ViT backbones on PASCAL VOC, MS COCO, LVIS V1, FSOD-1 K, and FSVOD-500 benchmarks demonstrate that our model outperforms the previous state-of-the-art methods, significantly improving the ability of FSOD in most shots/splits. | 2025 | Cross-Modal Hashing via Diverse Instances MatchingabstractCross-modal hashing is a highly effective technique for searching relevant data across different modalities, owing to its low storage costs and fast similarity retrieval capability. While significant progress has been achieved in this area, prior investigations predominantly concentrate on a one-to-one feature alignment approach, where a singular feature is derived for similarity retrieval. However, the singular feature in these methods fails to adequately capture the varied multi-instance information inherent in the original data across disparate modalities. Consequently, the conventional one-to-one methodology is plagued by a semantic mismatch issue, as the rigid one-to-one alignment inhibits effective multi-instance matching. To address this issue, we propose a novel Diverse Instances Matching for Cross-modal Hashing (DIMCH), which explores the relevance between multiple instances in different modalities using a multi-instance learning algorithm. Specifically, we design a novel diverse instances learning module to extract a multi-feature set, which enables our model to capture detailed multi-instance semantics. To evaluate the similarity between two multi-feature sets, we adopt the smooth chamfer distance function, which enables our model to incorporate the conventional similarity retrieval structure. Moreover, to sufficiently exploit the supervised information from the semantic label, we adopt the weight cosine triplet loss as the objective function, which incorporates the multilevel similarity among the multi-labels into the training procedure and enables the model to mine the multi-label correlation effectively. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our diverse hashing embedding method achieves state-of-the-art performance in supervised cross-modal hashing retrieval tasks. | 2024 | KC-GenRe: A Knowledge-constrained Generative Re-ranking Method Based on Large Language Models for Knowledge Graph CompletionabstractThe goal of knowledge graph completion (KGC) is to predict missing facts among entities. Previous methods for KGC re-ranking are mostly built on non-generative language models to obtain the probability of each candidate. Recently, generative large language models (LLMs) have shown outstanding performance on several tasks such as information extraction and dialog systems. Leveraging them for KGC re-ranking is beneficial for leveraging the extensive pre-trained knowledge and powerful generative capabilities. However, it may encounter new problems when accomplishing the task, namely mismatch, misordering and omission. To this end, we introduce KC-GenRe, a knowledge-constrained generative re-ranking method based on LLMs for KGC. To overcome the mismatch issue, we formulate the KGC re-ranking task as a candidate identifier sorting generation problem implemented by generative LLMs. To tackle the misordering issue, we develop a knowledge-guided interactive training method that enhances the identification and ranking of candidates. To address the omission issue, we design a knowledge-augmented constrained inference method that enables contextual prompting and controlled generation, so as to obtain valid rankings. Experimental results show that KG-GenRe achieves state-of-the-art performance on four datasets, with gains of up to 6.7% and 7.7% in the MRR and Hits@1 metric compared to previous methods, and 9.0% and 11.1% compared to that without re-ranking. | 2024 | ESC-CoT: Easy-to-Hard Self-Comparative Chain-of-Thought for News Discourse ProfilingabstractNews Discourse Profiling is a discourse task that aims to recognize the semantic role of each sentence in an article. Within this task, the model not only requires comprehending the news content but also needs to analyze the logical relation in a discourse, posing a great challenge to traditional deep learning techniques. Recently, large language model (LLM) technology has demonstrated significant potential for enhancing the task of news discourse profiling. These models, characterized by their vast number of parameters, excel in logical reasoning and contextual understanding, allowing them to grasp the intricate details and relationships within the text. When paired with the effective chain-of-thought (CoT) technique, LLMs have shown impressive performance in many complex reasoning tasks. However, the discourse structure significantly differentiates between news, thus it is difficult to analyze all news with a unified fixed CoT. In this paper, We propose an adaptive CoT technique for the News Discourse Profiling task, namely Easy-to-Hard Self-Comparative Chain-of- Thought (ESC-CoT). ESC-CoT formulates the task as a multiple-iteration process, i.e., ESC-CoT handles the easiest part at the current iteration and gradually transfers to more complex parts, which can reduce the risk of early error propagation. To alleviate error propagation along the reasoning chain, ESC-CoT compares the conflicting results from different CoT processes, analyzing the context and meaning of sentences more deeply, thereby improving LLM's reasoning ability and reducing the possibility of error. Experiment results demonstrate that ESC-CoT substantially surpasses the traditional news discourse profiling methods. Compared with state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods on two benchmark datasets, the ESC-CoT technique shows an improvement of 7.8 and 19.6 on F1 score, respectively. In this paper, a new trajectory coding mechanism, G2Vec, is proposed to solve the existing problems in road network trajectory similarity calculation. Aiming at the nonlinear errors between road network information and real trajectory information, as well as the balance between global and individual information, a multi-scale feature fusion learning mechanism is proposed. GCN is used to extract overall road network features, GGNN is used to extract individual track features, and a learnable residual layer is added for position correction. At the same time, we introduce attention mechanisms to capture temporal and spatial correlations and use LSTM to learn the final representation of the trajectory. The G2Vec is evaluated using two real-world trajectory datasets, and the experimental results demonstrate that G2Vec outperforms all the state-of-the-art methods significantly. | 2024 | Perception of Knowledge Boundary for Large Language Models through Semi-open-ended Question AnsweringabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) are widely used for knowledge-seeking purposes yet suffer from hallucinations. The knowledge boundary of an LLM limits its factual understanding, beyond which it may begin to hallucinate. Investigating the perception of LLMs' knowledge boundary is crucial for detecting hallucinations and LLMs' reliable generation. Current studies perceive LLMs' knowledge boundary on questions with concrete answers (close-ended questions) while paying limited attention to semi-open-ended questions that correspond to many potential answers. Some researchers achieve it by judging whether the question is answerable or not. However, this paradigm is not so suitable for semi-open-ended questions, which are usually ``partially answerable questions'' containing both answerable answers and ambiguous (unanswerable) answers. Ambiguous answers are essential for knowledge-seeking, but it may go beyond the knowledge boundary of LLMs. In this paper, we perceive the LLMs' knowledge boundary with semi-open-ended questions by discovering more ambiguous answers. First, we apply an LLM-based approach to construct semi-open-ended questions and obtain answers from a target LLM. Unfortunately, the output probabilities of mainstream black-box LLMs are inaccessible to sample more low-probability ambiguous answers. Therefore, we apply an open-sourced auxiliary model to explore ambiguous answers for the target LLM. We calculate the nearest semantic representation for existing answers to estimate their probabilities, with which we reduce the generation probability of high-probability existing answers to achieve a more effective generation. Finally, we compare the results from the RAG-based evaluation and LLM self-evaluation to categorize four types of ambiguous answers that are beyond the knowledge boundary of the target LLM. Following our method, we construct a dataset to perceive the knowledge boundary for GPT-4. We find that GPT-4 performs poorly on semi-open-ended questions and is often unaware of its knowledge boundary. Besides, our auxiliary model, LLaMA-2-13B, is effective in discovering many ambiguous answers, including correct answers neglected by GPT-4 and delusive wrong answers GPT-4 struggles to identify. | 2024 | Hierarchical Shared Encoder With Task-Specific Transformer Layer Selection for Emotion-Cause Pair ExtractionabstractEmotion Cause Pair Extraction (ECPE) aims to extract emotions and their causes from a document. Powerful emotion and cause extraction abilities have proven essential in achieving accurate ECPE. However, most existing methods employ shared feature learning of emotion extraction and cause extraction, which can harm the abilities of both tasks as they focus on different information (i.e., task-specific features). Moreover, shared feature learning of the two tasks also leads to the label imbalance problem. To address these issues, this paper proposes a multi-task learning framework named Hierarchical Shared Encoder with Task-specific Transformer Layer Selection (HSE-TTLS). The model achieves ECPE via two subtasks: Emotion Extraction (EE) and Emotion Cause Extraction (ECE). The design of two subtasks for ECPE corresponds to the fact that cause clauses are emotion-dependent and significantly alleviates the label imbalance problem. To effectively extract task-specific features for EE and ECE, we employ BERT as the token-level encoder and select task-specific optimal layers for the two subtasks. Focal loss is used as the objective function for EE to further alleviate the label imbalance problem. Extensive experiments on benchmark ECPE corpus demonstrate the effectiveness of HSE-TTLS, which outperforms state-of-the-art baseline methods by at least 1.56% on the F1 score. | 2024 | Reallocating and Evolving General Knowledge for Few-Shot LearningabstractLarge-scale vision-language pre-trained models like CLIP are extensively employed in few-shot tasks due to their robust generalization capabilities. Existing methods usually incorporate additional techniques to acquire knowledge for new tasks building upon the general knowledge in CLIP. However, they do not realize that the task-related knowledge might be implicitly embedded within the general knowledge well-learned. In this paper, we propose a novel framework to reallocate and evolve the general knowledge for specific few-shot tasks (REGK), mimicking the human “Attention Allocation” cognition mechanism. With a learnable mask-tuning selection, REGK focuses on selecting the task-related parameters of CLIP while learning specific few-shot knowledge without altering CLIP underlying framework. Specifically, we initially observe that inheriting the strong knowledge representation capability in CLIP is more advantageous for few-shot learning than its task-solving ability. Subsequently, a two-stage tuning framework is introduced to reallocate and control the mask-tuning on different tasks. It allows model automatically mask-tuning on different few-shot tasks with selective sparsity training. In this way, we achieve reliable transfer of task-related knowledge and effective exploration of new knowledge from limited data to enhance few-shot learning. | 2023 | DaMSTF: Domain Adversarial Learning Enhanced Meta Self-Training for Domain AdaptationabstractSelf-training emerges as an important research line on domain adaptation.By taking the model's prediction as the pseudo labels of the unlabeled data, self-training bootstraps the model with pseudo instances in the target domain. However, the prediction errors of pseudo labels (label noise) challenge the performance of self-training.To address this problem, previous approaches only use reliable pseudo instances, i.e., pseudo instances with high prediction confidence, to retrain the model.Although these strategies effectively reduce the label noise, they are prone to miss the hard examples. In this paper, we propose a new self-training framework for domain adaptation, namely Domain adversarial learning enhanced Self-Training Framework (DaMSTF).Firstly, DaMSTF involves meta-learning to estimate the importance of each pseudo instance, so as to simultaneously reduce the label noise and preserve hard examples.Secondly, we design a meta constructor for constructing the meta validation set, which guarantees the effectiveness of the meta-learning module by improving the quality of the meta validation set.Thirdly, we find that the meta-learning module suffers from the training guidance vanishment and tends to converge to an inferior optimal. To this end, we employ domain adversarial learning as a heuristic neural network initialization method, which can help the meta-learning module converge to a better optimal.Theoretically and experimentally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DaMSTF.On the cross-domain sentiment classification task, DaMSTF improves the performance of BERT with an average of nearly 4%. | 2023 | Rumor Detection Via Assessing the Spreading Propensity of UsersabstractThe explosion of rumors on social media has adversely affected cyber security and our lives, increasing the urgent demand for rumor detection. Existing detection methods focus on exploring signals of deception from textual contents and rumor propagation structures, without fully considering user’s long-term spreading propensity. Sociology and psychology have demonstrated that when a rumor satisfies a user’s inner requirements, he/she has more propensity to spread it. User context, such as historical posts, offers extensive details about propensities for spreading rumors, which has great potential to promote rumor detection. Therefore, we explore a new feature space by extracting the spreading propensity from user context, and combine it with social interaction information to construct a creative detection algorithm. Experiments on three Twitter datasets show that our approach achieves significant improvements compared to strong baselines and displays a superior capacity for detecting rumors at early stages. | 2023 | Meta-Tsallis-Entropy Minimization: A New Self-Training Approach for Domain Adaptation on Text ClassificationabstractText classification is a fundamental task for natural language processing, and adapting text classification models across domains has broad applications. Self-training generates pseudo-examples from the model's predictions and iteratively trains on the pseudo-examples, i.e., minimizes the loss on the source domain and the Gibbs entropy on the target domain. However, Gibbs entropy is sensitive to prediction errors, and thus, self-training tends to fail when the domain shift is large. In this paper, we propose Meta-Tsallis Entropy minimization (MTEM). MTEM uses an instance adaptive Tsallis entropy to replace the Gibbs entropy and a meta-learning algorithm to optimize the instance adaptive Tsallis entropy on the target domain. To reduce the computation cost of MTEM, we propose an approximation technique to approximate the second-order derivation involved in the meta-learning. To efficiently generate pseudo labels, we propose an annealing sampling mechanism for exploring the model's prediction probability. Theoretically, we prove the convergence of the meta-learning algorithm in MTEM and analyze the effectiveness of MTEM in achieving domain adaptation. Experimentally, MTEM improves the adaptation performance of BERT with an average of 4 percent on the benchmark dataset. Menglong Lu, Zhen Huang 0006, Zhiliang Tian, Xuanyu Fei, Dongsheng Li 0001 |

| 2023 | A Canonicalization-Enhanced Known Fact-Aware Framework For Open Knowledge Graph Link PredictionabstractOpen knowledge graph (OpenKG) link prediction aims to predict missing factual triples in the form of (head noun phrase, relation phrase, tail noun phrase). Since triples are not canonicalized, previous methods either focus on canonicalizing noun phrases (NPs) to reduce graph sparsity, or utilize textual forms to improve type compatibility. However, they neglect to canonicalize relation phrases (RPs) and triples, making OpenKG maintain high sparsity and impeding the performance. To address the above issues, we propose a Canonicalization-Enhanced Known Fact-Aware (CEKFA) framework that boosts link prediction performance through sparsity reduction of RPs and triples. First, we propose a similarity-driven RP canonicalization method to reduce RPs' sparsity by sharing knowledge of semantically similar ones. Second, to reduce the sparsity of triples, a known fact-aware triple canonicalization method is designed to retrieve relevant known facts from training data. Finally, these two types of canonical information are integrated into a general two-stage re-ranking framework that can be applied to most existing knowledge graph embedding methods. Experiment results on two OpenKG datasets, ReVerb20K and ReVerb45K, show that our approach achieves state-of-the-art results. | 2023 | OLM2: Automatic Optimal Strategy Generating for Large-Scale Model Training with Limited-MemoryabstractThe scale of model parameters and the amount of training data is exponentially increasing. It requires more GPU memory with the exponential increasement of model parameters. Recomputation and swapping are two main memory optimization methods that have been extensively studied, and there are also optimization strategies that combine the two methods. However, most of them are based on heuristic search strategies, which do not explore the complete solution space and can’t guarantee the optimality of the solution results. An optimal search strategy with tensor-level recomputation and swapping is expected in large-scale model training. In this paper, we propose an optimal strategy searching algorithm combining tensor-based recomputation and swapping. Specifically, the memory swapping strategy is reformulated as an optimization problem, which converts the memory constraints into mixed integer programming, to find the optimal memory optimization strategy. By leveraging the advantages of both recomputation and swapping, this approach minimizes computation consumption without exceeding the available memory limitation. Experimental results show that our method exhibits about 60% reduction in memory requirements during the training process. Furthermore, our method can reduce the overall training time beyond the existing algorithms. Compared to Checkmate, our approach achieves about 0.3–0.9% reduction in computation cost per iteration. | 2023 | Incorporating Structured Sentences with Time-enhanced BERT for Fully-inductive Temporal Relation PredictionabstractTemporal relation prediction in incomplete temporal knowledge graphs (TKGs) is a popular temporal knowledge graph completion (TKGC) problem in both transductive and inductive settings. Traditional embedding-based TKGC models (TKGE) rely on structured connections and can only handle a fixed set of entities, i.e., the transductive setting. In the inductive setting where test TKGs contain emerging entities, the latest methods are based on symbolic rules or pre-trained language models (PLMs). However, they suffer from being inflexible and not time-specific, respectively. In this work, we extend the fully-inductive setting, where entities in the training and test sets are totally disjoint, into TKGs and take a further step towards a more flexible and time-sensitive temporal relation prediction approach SST-BERT,incorporating Structured Sentences with Time-enhanced BERT. Our model can obtain the entity history and implicitly learn rules in the semantic space by encoding structured sentences, solving the problem of inflexibility. We propose to use a time masking MLM task to pre-train BERT in a corpus rich in temporal tokens specially generated for TKGs, enhancing the time sensitivity of SST-BERT. To compute the probability of occurrence of a target quadruple, we aggregate all its structured sentences from both temporal and semantic perspectives into a score. Experiments on the transductive datasets and newly generated fully-inductive benchmarks show that SST-BERT successfully improves over state-of-the-art baselines. | 2023 | Meta-Learning Based Knowledge Extrapolation for Temporal Knowledge GraphabstractIn the last few years, the solution to Knowledge Graph (KG) completion via learning embeddings of entities and relations has attracted a surge of interest. Temporal KGs(TKGs) extend traditional Knowledge Graphs (KGs) by associating static triples with timestamps forming quadruples. Different from KGs and TKGs in the transductive setting, constantly emerging entities and relations in incomplete TKGs create demand to predict missing facts with unseen components, which is the extrapolation setting. Traditional temporal knowledge graph embedding (TKGE) methods are limited in the extrapolation setting since they are trained within a fixed set of components. In this paper, we propose a Meta-Learning based Temporal Knowledge Graph Extrapolation (MTKGE) model, which is trained on link prediction tasks sampled from the existing TKGs and tested in the emerging TKGs with unseen entities and relations. Specifically, we meta-train a GNN framework that captures relative position patterns and temporal sequence patterns between relations. The learned embeddings of patterns can be transferred to embed unseen components. Experimental results on two different TKG extrapolation datasets show that MTKGE consistently outperforms both the existing state-of-the-art models for knowledge graph extrapolation and specifically adapted KGE and TKGE baselines. | 2023 | Structure Enhanced Path Reasoning for Knowledge Graph CompletionabstractKnowledge graphs are crucial foundations for building intelligent systems, such as question answering and recommendation. However, their performance is hampered by the incompleteness of KGs, so the knowledge graph completion arises to infer whether a triple of the form (head entity, relation, tail entity) is a missing fact. The path‐based approach that encodes paths from the head entity to the tail entity for reasoning achieves good performance. Previous work suggests that entity type is beneficial for learning path representations. Nevertheless, the semantics of entities are not captured accurately, as many entities are not typed or loosely typed. In addition, previous methods tend to model paths only from the forward direction but fail to capture new path patterns from the reverse direction (i.e., tail entity to head entity). In this paper, we introduce a structure enhanced path reasoning (SPR) framework to address the above‐given problems. First, the model uilizes the structure of entities, i.e., their relational contexts (the relations linked from the given entity), to obtain a reliable path representation that captures correct entity semantics. This information is accessible to all nonisolated entities in all KGs, so that it can compensate the semantics for entities or KGs that have no type available. Second, we leverage the structure of paths to derive their reverse paths, so as to enhance the path representation by additionally encoding the new patterns embedded in them through a dual path encoding method. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods, we design different architectures based on LSTM and Transformer, respectively. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets, WN18RR, and FB15k‐237, show that our approach apparently outperforms state‐of‐the‐art methods on fact prediction task and relation prediction task. Furthermore, extensive experiments illustrate the benefits of enhancing path reasoning by exploiting structure information from entity relational contexts and the dual path encoding method. | 2022 | Social Bot-Aware Graph Neural Network for Early Rumor DetectionabstractEarly rumor detection is a key challenging task to prevent rumors from spreading widely. Sociological research shows that social bots’ behavior in the early stage has become the main reason for rumors’ wide spread. However, current models do not explicitly distinguish genuine users from social bots, and their failure in identifying rumors timely. Therefore, this paper aims at early rumor detection by accounting for social bots’ behavior, and presents a Social Bot-Aware Graph Neural Network, named SBAG. SBAG firstly pre-trains a multi-layer perception network to capture social bot features, and then constructs multiple graph neural networks by embedding the features to model the early propagation of posts, which is further used to detect rumors. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets show that SBAG achieves significant improvements against the baselines and also identifies rumors within 3 hours while maintaining more than 90% accuracy. | 2022 | Adaptive Threshold Selective Self-Attention for Chinese NERabstractRecently, Transformer has achieved great success in Chinese named entity recognition (NER) owing to its good parallelism and ability to model long-range dependencies, which utilizes self-attention to encode context. However, the fully connected way of self-attention may scatter the attention distribution and allow some irrelevant character information to be integrated, leading to entity boundaries being misidentified. In this paper, we propose a data-driven Adaptive Threshold Selective Self-Attention (ATSSA) mechanism that aims to dynamically select the most relevant characters to enhance the Transformer architecture for Chinese NER. In ATSSA, the attention score threshold of each query is automatically generated, and characters with attention score higher than the threshold are selected by the query while others are discarded, so as to address irrelevant attention integration. Experiments on four benchmark Chinese NER datasets show that the proposed ATSSA brings 1.68 average F1 score improvements to the baseline model and achieves state-of-the-art performance. | 2022 | IMCI: Integrate Multi-view Contextual Information for Fact Extraction and VerificationabstractWith the rapid development of automatic fake news detection technology, fact extraction and verification (FEVER) has been attracting more attention. The task aims to extract the most related fact evidences from millions of open-domain Wikipedia documents and then verify the credibility of corresponding claims. Although several strong models have been proposed for the task and they have made great process, we argue that they fail to utilize multi-view contextual information and thus cannot obtain better performance. In this paper, we propose to integrate multi-view contextual information (IMCI) for fact extraction and verification. For each evidence sentence, we define two kinds of context, i.e. intra-document context and inter-document context. Intra-document context consists of the document title and all the other sentences from the same document. Inter-document context consists of all other evidences which may come from different documents. Then we integrate the multi-view contextual information to encode the evidence sentences to handle the task. Our experimental results on FEVER 1.0 shared task show that our IMCI framework makes great progress on both fact extraction and verification, and achieves state-of-the-art performance with a winning FEVER score of 73.96% and label accuracy of 77.25% on the online blind test set. | 2022 | R2F: A General Retrieval, Reading and Fusion Framework for Document-level Natural Language InferenceabstractDocument-level natural language inference (DOCNLI) is a new challenging task in natural language processing, aiming at judging the entailment relationship between a pair of hypothesis and premise documents.Current datasets and baselines largely follow sentence-level settings, but fail to address the issues raised by longer documents. In this paper, we establish a general solution, named Retrieval, Reading and Fusion (R 2 F) framework, and a new setting, by analyzing the main challenges of DOCNLI: interpretability, long-range dependency, and cross-sentence inference. The basic idea of the framework is to simplify documentlevel task into a set of sentence-level tasks, and improve both performance and interpretability with the power of evidence. For each hypothesis sentence, the framework retrieves evidence sentences from the premise, and reads to estimate its credibility. Then the sentencelevel results are fused to judge the relationship between the documents. For the setting, we contribute complementary evidence and entailment label annotation on hypothesis sentences, for interpretability study. Our experimental results show that R 2 F framework can obtain state-of-the-art performance and is robust for diverse evidence retrieval methods. Moreover, it can give more interpretable prediction results. Our model and code are released at https://github.com/phoenixsecularbird/R2F. | 2022 | CNA: A Dataset for Parsing Discourse Structure on Chinese News ArticlesabstractDiscourse structure analysis has shown to be useful for many artificial intelligence (AI) tasks such as text sum-marization and text categorization. However, for the Chinese news domain, the discourse structure analysis system is still immature due to the limitation of the lack of expert-annotated datasets. In this paper, we present CNA, a Chinese news corpus containing 1155 news articles annotated by human experts, which covers four domains and four news media sources. Next, we implement several text classification methods as baselines. Experimental results demonstrate that document-level method can achieve a better performance, and we further propose a document-level neural network model with multiple sentence features which achieves the state-of-the-art performance. In the end, we analyze the content type distribution of each sentence in CNA and the prediction errors of our model that occurred on the test set. | 2022 | An Emotion Evolution Network for Emotion Recognition in ConversationabstractEmotion recognition in conversation (ERC) aims to detect the emotion in a conversation, which has drawn increasing interests due to its widely applications. Current methodologies mainly endeavor to capture a good representation of conversation context. However, we argue that the conversation context are not always consistent with the emotion evolution. This incongruity can greatly restrict the recognition performance. To address aforementioned challenges, in this paper, we propose an emotion evolution network for emotion recognition in conversation (E2Net). Specifically, a speaker-aware modeling methodology is firstly constructed to fuse the utterance from conversations. We employ the gated recurrent unit (GRU) encodes the utterance sequentially. For encoding the interaction between speakers, a listener state is introduced to aid in analyzing conversation context. Then, a Transformer-based method is proposed to capture the emotion evolution accompanying with the emotion transformation matrix. To demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed method, extensive experiments are conducted on four REC datasets and the experimental results suggest that our method is effective and outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods on multiple datasets. | 2022 | Early-Learning regularized Contrastive Learning for Cross-Modal Retrieval with Noisy LabelsabstractCross modal retrieval receives intensive attention for flexible queries between different modalities. However, in practice it is challenging to retrieve cross modal content with noisy labels. The latest research on machine learning shows that a model tends to fit cleanly labeled data at early learning stage and then memorize the data with noisy labels. Although the clustering strategy in cross modal retrieval can be utilized for alleviating outliers, the networks will rapidly overfit after clean data is fitted well and the noisy labels begin to force the cluster center drift. Motivated by these fundamental phenomena, we propose an Early Learning regularized Contrastive Learning method for Cross Modal Retrieval with Noisy Labels (ELRCMR). In the solution, we propose to project the multi-modal data to a shared feature space by contrastive learning, in which early learning regularization is employed to prevent the memorization of noisy labels when training the model, and the dynamic weight balance strategy is employed to alleviate clustering drift. We evaluated the method with extensive experiments, and the result shows the proposed method could solve the cluster drift in conventional solutions and achieve promising performance on widely used benchmark datasets. | 2022 | SIFTER: A Framework for Robust Rumor DetectionabstractWith the development of online social media, the fabrication and dissemination of rumors are much easier than before. As a result, automatic rumor detection becomes more urgent for internet governors, and has received great interest from the AI community. Even though many initial successes have been achieved in terms of detection accuracy and timeliness, existing rumor detection methods are still not robust due to thefrequent domain shiftproblem and theinconsistent propagationproblem.Frequent domain shiftrefers that rumors’ topic changes frequently on online social media, so the trained model may expire quickly in real applications.Inconsistent propagationis another practical challenge, referring to the fact that the spread of rumors is often accompanied by misleading comments. Therefore, a vulnerable model may output inconsistent predictions for the same instance. In this paper, we propose a new framework to improve the robustness of existing rumor detection methods, named SIFTER (SubjectiveInFormaTionEnhancedReinforcement learning). To address thefrequent domain shift, SIFTER employs multi-task learning to introduce external knowledge that can explicitly describe rumors, and thus makes models more adaptive across domains. In particular, SIFTER involves a multi-task learning module to capture subjective information, which is found to be discriminative in rumors’ propagations. To address theinconsistent propagation, SIFTER employs reinforcement learning to realize a new training schema tailed for rumor detection, namely sequential training, which can reduce the attendance of noisy comments in the feature extraction process. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets, Twitter and Weibo, validate the effectiveness of SIFTER. After migrating existing methods to SIFTER, their accuracy score is improved up to 9.4% in cross-domain inference, and their reverse ratio decreases by nearly 4% in continuous prediction. | 2021 | T-Mask: An Active and Accurate Dialogue State Tracking with Token Mask PredictionabstractRecent dialogue state tracking (DST) usually treats utterance, system action and ontology equally to estimate the slot types and values. In this way, the expression of slot in utterance is restricted. As the main way to directly express user semantics, utterance should receive further attention and its proportion in semantic expression should be dynamic according to the content. It’s common to recognize the different importance of information in all the DST models. However, most of them pay little attention to the position of slot in utterance. In fact, position and semantics are related due to human grammatical habits and expression habits. Therefore, we propose T-Mask1, a model to actively and accurately learn the token mask position of slot, and we further utilize the learned position information to influence the semantic expression of utterance. We verify the effectiveness of our model on DSTC2 and WoZ2.0. On WoZ2.0, we achieve 90.84 joint goal accuracy and 97.6 turn request accuracy, which is better than most existing models. | 2021 | SEED: A Cross-Layer Semantic Enhanced SLU Model With Role Context Differentiated FusionabstractThe mainstream SLU models, such as SDEN, take the joint training way of slot filling and intent detection because of their correlation and add contextual information to improve the model performance by the contextual vector. Although these models have proved effective, it also brings challenges for slot filling. The slot filling decoder is fed with the deep-layer semantic encoding without alignment information, which will affect the performance of slot filling. The alignment information of the history utterances is attenuated in the context vector because of the repeated fusion process, which is not conducive to the performance improvement of slot filling. In order to solve the above problems, we proposed a novel cross layer semantic enhanced SLU model with role context differentiated fusion, which contains two important improvements: 1) the word embedding information of the current utterance is introduced into the slot filling decoder to strengthen the alignment information based on the mutual attention mechanism; 2) the utterances of different roles are fused in different ways to reserve the alignment information of history utterances in the contextual vector. A large number of experiments were carried out on the standard dataset from SDEN, named KVRET*, and the results verify the effectiveness of our new model. Our model can increase the F1 score of slot filling by more than 7.5% than the existing models. Dongsong Zhang, Shezheng Song, Zhen Huang 0006, Yuxing Peng 0001 |

To mitigate this problem of insufficient labeled medical data, in this work, we propose a novel semi-supervised framework for medical image classification. For unlabeled data, we apply the consistency-based strategy to produce high-quality pseudo label, which encourages model to output the same predictions under different perturbations. In addition, we present a novel mixed sample data augmentation CamMix to effectively exploit the relation between samples, mixing pairs of input data and labels according to the class activation map mask. We have evaluated our proposed method on two public medical image datasets, interstitial lung disease dataset and ISIC 2018 skin lesion analysis dataset. The results demonstrate superior performance of our method over other existing methods on the two datasets. | 2021 | A Neural Ranker for Open-Domain Question Answering via Sentence-Level Jump EncodingabstractOpen-domain question answering extract the answer for a question from a large scale corpus, which typically employs ranker to filter irrelevant paragraphs. As traditional retrieval approaches based on statistical characteristics, neural ranking model has gradually become a popular choice for filtering as its capacity of semantic features extraction. But massive corpus request high performance for filtering efficiency. Thus, acceleration of textual encoding by neural model is worthy of attention and there are many achievements on various of perspectives. Inspired by reading habit of human, this paper presents a novel neural ranker on sentence-level jump encoding which can better skip those irrelevant sentences than existing neural models. When people browsing text with questions, they tend to find the key sentence based on heuristic information of question and current reading. And our sentence-level jump encoder works in a similar way which can effectively and accurately locate key sentences for question. We evaluate our neural ranker on long paragraph setting of Quasar-T dataset, our method achieves significant improvements on both ranking acceleration and ranking accuracy, as well as surpass other question answering baselines on the whole question answering results. | 2020 | Argumentation Mining on Essays at Multi ScalesabstractArgumentation mining on essays is a new challenging task in natural language processing, which aims to identify the types and locations of argumentation components. Recent research mainly models the task as a sequence tagging problem and deal with all the argumentation components at word level. However, this task is not scale-independent. Some types of argumentation components which serve as core opinions on essays or paragraphs, are at essay level or paragraph level. Sequence tagging method conducts reasoning by local context words, and fails to effectively mine these components. To this end, we propose a multi-scale argumentation mining model, where we respectively mine different types of argumentation components at corresponding levels. Besides, an effective coarse-to-fine argumentation fusion mechanism is proposed to further improve the performance. We conduct a serial of experiments on the Persuasive Essay dataset (PE2.0). Experimental results indicate that our model outperforms existing models on mining all types of argumentation components. Zhen Huang 0006, Yong Dou |

| 2020 | RAD: Reinforced Attention Decoder Model On Question GenerationabstractQuestion Generation (QG) aims to construct questions from given text automatically. Recently, QG has received widely concerned. The mainstream method is still based on the fixed sequence generation model of Seq2Seq model, and few people consider the influence of generation order in the result. In this paper, we present a novel Reinforced Attention Decoder Neural Network for the QA-SRL task. First, our model draws on the idea of the reinforcement learning algorithm with baseline, which is using the accuracy of each slot and sentence as the reward, updating the Policy Network to predict the optimal generation order. Second, we apply the Attention mechanism on the baseline to get more relevant information about the entire sentence. Addition experiments explore that distilling knowledge from RAD (the teacher) model to guide RAD-Reborn model (the student) training can achieve better performance. | 2020 | A Distributed Computing Framework Based on Variance Reduction Method to Accelerate Training Machine Learning ModelsabstractTo support large-scale intelligent applications, distributed machine learning based on JointCloud is an intuitive solution scheme. | 2019 | Read + Verify: Machine Reading Comprehension with Unanswerable QuestionsabstractMachine reading comprehension with unanswerable questions aims to abstain from answering when no answer can be inferred. In addition to extract answers, previous works usually predict an additional “no-answer” probability to detect unanswerable cases. However, they fail to validate the answerability of the question by verifying the legitimacy of the predicted answer. To address this problem, we propose a novel read-then-verify system, which not only utilizes a neural reader to extract candidate answers and produce no-answer probabilities, but also leverages an answer verifier to decide whether the predicted answer is entailed by the input snippets. Moreover, we introduce two auxiliary losses to help the reader better handle answer extraction as well as no-answer detection, and investigate three different architectures for the answer verifier. Our experiments on the SQuAD 2.0 dataset show that our system obtains a score of 74.2 F1 on test set, achieving state-of-the-art results at the time of submission (Aug. 28th, 2018). | 2019 | Retrieve, Read, Rerank: Towards End-to-End Multi-Document Reading ComprehensionabstractThis paper considers the reading comprehension task in which multiple documents are given as input.Prior work has shown that a pipeline of retriever, reader, and reranker can improve the overall performance. However, the pipeline system is inefficient since the input is re-encoded within each module, and is unable to leverage upstream components to help downstream training. In this work, we present RE 3 QA, a unified question answering model that combines context retrieving, reading comprehension, and answer reranking to predict the final answer.Unlike previous pipelined approaches, RE 3 QA shares contextualized text representation across different components, and is carefully designed to use high-quality upstream outputs (e.g., retrieved context or candidate answers) for directly supervising downstream modules (e.g., the reader or the reranker). As a result, the whole network can be trained end-to-end to avoid the context inconsistency problem.Experiments show that our model outperforms the pipelined baseline and achieves state-ofthe-art results on two versions of TriviaQA and two variants of SQuAD. | 2019 | TFPN: Twin Feature Pyramid Networks for Object DetectionabstractFPN (Feature Pyramid Networks) is one of the most popular object detection networks, which can improve small object detection by enhancing shallow features. However, limited attention has been paid to the improvement of large object detection via deeper feature enhancement. One existing approach merges the feature maps of different layers into a new feature map for object detection, but can lead to increased noise and loss of information. The other approach adds a bottom-up structure after the feature pyramid of FPN, which superimposes the information from shallow layers into the deep feature map but weakens the strength of FPN in detecting small objects. To address these challenges, this paper proposes TFPN (Twin Feature Pyramid Networks), which consists of (1) FPN+, a bottom-up structure that improves large object detection; (2) TPS, a Twin Pyramid Structure that improves medium object detection; and (3) innovative integration of these two with FPN, which can significantly improve the detection accuracy of large and medium objects while maintaining the advantage of FPN in small object detection. Extensive experiments using the MSCOCO object detection datasets and the BDD100K automatic driving dataset demonstrate that TFPN significantly improves over existing models, achieving up to 2.2 improvement in detection accuracy (e.g., 36.3 for FPN vs. 38.5 for TFPN on COCO Val-17). | 2019 | A Skewness-Aware Matrix Factorization Approach for Mesh-Structured Cloud ServicesabstractOnline cloud services need to fulfill clients' requests scalably and fast. State-of-the-art cloud services are increasingly deployed as a distributed service mesh. Service to service communication is frequent in the mesh. Unfortunately, problematic events may occur between any pair of nodes in the mesh, therefore, it is vital to maximize the network visibility. A state-of-the-art approach is to model pairwise RTTs based on a latent factor model represented as a low-rank matrix factorization. A latent factor corresponds to a rank-1 component in the factorization model, and is shared by all node pairs. However, different node pairs usually experience a skewed set of hidden factors, which should be fully considered in the model. In this paper, we propose a skewness-aware matrix factorization method named SMF. We decompose the matrix factorization into basic units of rank-one latent factors, and progressively combine rank-one factors for different node pairs. We present a unifying framework to automatically and adaptively select the rank-one factors for each node pair, which not only preserves the low rankness of the matrix model, but also adapts to skewed network latency distributions. Over real-world RTT data sets, SMF significantly improves the relative error by a factor of 0.2 x to 10 x, converges fast and stably, and compactly captures fine-grained local and global network latency structures. | 2018 | Attention-Guided Answer Distillation for Machine Reading ComprehensionabstractDespite that current reading comprehension systems have achieved significant advancements, their promising performances are often obtained at the cost of making an ensemble of numerous models. Besides, existing approaches are also vulnerable to adversarial attacks. This paper tackles these problems by leveraging knowledge distillation, which aims to transfer knowledge from an ensemble model to a single model. We first demonstrate that vanilla knowledge distillation applied to answer span prediction is effective for reading comprehension systems. We then propose two novel approaches that not only penalize the prediction on confusing answers but also guide the training with alignment information distilled from the ensemble. Experiments show that our best student model has only a slight drop of 0.4% F1 on the SQuAD test set compared to the ensemble teacher, while running 12x faster during inference. | 2018 | Multi-LCNN: A Hybrid Neural Network Based on Integrated Time-Frequency Characteristics for Acoustic Scene ClassificationabstractAcoustic scene classification (ASC) is an important task in audio signal processing and can be useful in many real-world applications. Recently, several deep neural network models have been proposed for ASC, such as LSTMs based on temporal analysis and CNNs based on frequency spectrum, as well as hybrid models of LSTM and CNN to further improve classification performance. However, existing hybrid models fail to properly preserve the temporal information when transferring data between different models. In this work, we first analyze the cause of such temporal information loss. We then propose Multi-LCNN, a new hybrid model with two important mechanisms: (1) a LCNN architecture to effectively preserve temporal information; and (2) a multi-channel feature fusion mechanism (MCFF) that combines enhanced temporal information and frequency spectrogram information to learn highly integrated and discriminative features for ASC. Second, a new optimization approach, called dynamic-critical reinforcement learning, is introduced to extend the standard supervised method. It always encourages to predict a more acceptable answer so as to address the convergence suppression problem occurred in traditional reinforcement learning algorithms. | 2018 | DSDR: Dynamic Semantic Discard Reader for Open-Domain Question AnsweringabstractOpen-domain question answering (QA) is an important problem in natural language processing. A QA system usually consists of an information retrieve (IR) model for finding the relevant passages that may have answers and a read comprehension (RC) model for generating answers from the selected passages. The state-of-the-art RC model uses all the passages for feature extraction when matching semantic information of text pairs. In this paper, however, we argue that the texts of passages often have different importance for specific questions and some even provide negative information that might affect the correctness of final prediction. To address this problem, we design dynamic semantic discard reader (DSDR), a deep model that tries to drop negative information irrelevant to the questions. The result of our experiment shows that DSDR outperforms existing methods in the exact-match and F1 scores on open-domain QA datasets. Zhen Huang 0006, Ludan Tan, Yang Liu 0259 |

| 2018 | Learning Environmental Sounds with Multi-scale Convolutional Neural NetworkabstractDeep learning has dramatically improved the performance of sounds recognition. However, learning acoustic models directly from the raw waveform is still challenging. Current waveform-based models generally use time-domain convolutional layers to extract features. The features extracted by single size filters are insufficient for building discriminative representation of audios. In this paper, we propose multi-scale convolution operation, which can get better audio representation by improving the frequency resolution and learning filters cross all frequency area. For leveraging the waveform-based features and spectrogram-based features in a single model, we introduce two-phase method to fuse the different features. Finally, we propose a novel end-to-end network called WaveMsNet based on the multi-scale convolution operation and two-phase method. | 2017 | SDF-NN: A Deep Neural Network with Semantic Dropping and Fusion for Natural Language InferenceabstractNatural language inference (NLI) is an important task in natural language processing (NLP), and recently, several deep neural network based models have been proposed for NLI. In this work, we first make two important observations regarding NLI: (1) the existence of extra/interfering semantics and its negative impact on the correctness of final inference; and (2) the unbalanced importance of local inference results and the need to combine all local results for aggregation. Motivated by these two observations, we have designed SDF-NN, a new NLI model with two novel components: (1) a Semantic Dropping Network (SDN) to automatically discard some of the interfering semantics; and (2) a Semantic Fusion Alignment (SFA) method to effectively fuse all local inference results. Our model has achieved 88.2% accuracy on the SNLI corpus, which is currently the best performing single model. Ludan Tan, Qin Lv, Yuxing Peng 0001, Xiang Zhao 0002, Zhen Huang 0006 |

| 2016 | Pegasus: a distributed and load-balancing fingerprint identification systemabstractFingerprint has been widely used in a variety of biometric identification systems in the past several years due to its uniqueness and immutability. With the rapid development of fingerprint identification techniques, many fingerprint identification systems are in urgent need to deal with large-scale fingerprint storage and high concurrent recognition queries, which bring huge challenges to the system. In this circumstance, we design and implement a distributed and load-balancing fingerprint identification system named Pegasus, which includes a distributed feature extraction subsystem and a distributed feature storage subsystem. The feature extraction procedure combines the Hadoop Image Processing Interface (HIPI) library to enhance its overall processing speed; the feature storage subsystem optimizes MongoDB’s default load balance strategy to improve the efficiency and robustness of Pegasus. Experiments and simulations are carried out, and results show that Pegasus can reduce the time cost by 70% during the feature extraction procedure. Pegasus also balances the difference of access load among front-end mongos nodes to less than 5%. Additionally, Pegasus reduces over 40% of data migration among back-end data shards to obtain a more reasonable data distribution based on the operation load (insertion, deletion, update, and query) of each shard. | 2013 | OPTAS: Optimal Data Placement in MapReduceabstractThe data placement strategy greatly affects the efficiency of MapReduce. The current strategy only takes the map phase into account to optimize the map time. But the ignored shuffle phase may increase the total running time significantly in many jobs. We propose a new data placement strategy, named OPTAS, which optimizes both the map and shuffle phases to reduce their total time. However, the huge search space makes it difficult to find out an optimal data placement instance (DPI) rapidly. To address this problem, an algorithm is proposed which can prune most of the search space and find out an optimal result quickly. The search space firstly is segmented in ascending order according to the potential map time. Within each segment, we propose an efficient method to construct a local optimal DPI with the minimal total time of both the map and shuffle phases. To find the global optimal DPI, we scan the local optimal DPIs in order. We have proven that the global optimal DPI can be found as the first local optimal DPI whose total time stops decreasing, thus further pruning the search space. In practice, we find that at most fourteen local optimal DPIs are scanned in tens of thousands of segments with the pruning strategy. Extensive experiments with real trace data verify not only the theoretic analysis of our pruning strategy and construction method but also the optimality of OPTAS. The best improvements obtained in our experiments can be over 40% compared with the existing strategy used by MapReduce. Yongrui Qin, Zhen Huang 0006, Yuxing Peng 0001, Dongsheng Li 0001, Huiba Li |

| 2011 | Reducing Repair Traffic in P2P Backup Systems: Exact Regenerating Codes on Hierarchical CodesabstractPeer to peer backup systems store data on “unreliable” peers that can leave the system at any moment. In this case, the only way to assure durability of the data is to add redundancy using either replication or erasure codes. Erasure codes are able to provide the same reliability as replication requiring much less storage space. Erasure coding breaks the data into blocks that are encoded and then stored on different nodes. However, when storage nodes permanently abandon the system, new redundant blocks must be created, which is referred to as repair. For “classical” erasure codes, generating a new block requires the transmission of k blocks over the network, resulting in a high repair traffic. Recently, two new classes of erasure codes, Regenerating Codes and Hierarchical Codes, have been proposed that significantly reduce the repair traffic. Regenerating Codes reduce the amount of data uploaded by each peer involved in the repair, while Hierarchical Codes reduce the number of nodes participating in the repair. In this article we propose to combine these two codes to devise a new class of erasure codes called ER-Hierarchical Codes that combine the advantages of both. Zhen Huang 0006, Ernst W.
