CTRAP: Embedding Collapse Trap to Safeguard Large Language Models from Harmful Fine-TuningabstractFine-tuning-as-a-service, while commercially successful for Large Language Model (LLM) providers, exposes models to harmful finetuning attacks. As a widely explored defense paradigm against such attacks, unlearning attempts to remove malicious knowledge from LLMs, thereby essentially preventing them from being used to perform malicious tasks. However, we highlight a critical flaw: the inherent general adaptability of LLMs allows them to easily bypass selective unlearning by rapidly relearning or repurposing their general capabilities for harmful tasks. To address this fundamental limitation, we propose a paradigm shift: instead of selective removal, we advocate for inducing model collapse, effectively forcing the model to "unlearn everything", specifically in response to updates characteristic of malicious adaptation. This collapse directly neutralizes the very general capabilities that attackers exploit, tackling the core issue unaddressed by selective unlearning. We introduce the Collapse Trap (CTRAP) as a practical mechanism to implement this concept conditionally.Embedded during alignment, CTRAP pre-configures the model's reaction to subsequent fine-tuning dynamics. If updates during fine-tuning constitute a persistent attempt to reverse safety alignment, the pre-configured trap triggers a progressive degradation of the model's core language modeling abilities, ultimately rendering it inert and useless for the attacker.Crucially, this collapse mechanism remains dormant during benign fine-tuning, ensuring the model's utility and general capabilities are preserved.1 Biao Yi, Tiansheng Huang, Baolei Zhang, Tong Li 0011, Lihai Nie, Zheli Liu, Li Shen 0008

Pyramid: A Secure, Resource-Efficient, and Pluggable Kubernetes for Multi-TenancyabstractThis work aims to achieve the best of both worlds with two prominent techniques adopted in cloud computing systems: hardware trusted execution environments (TEEs) for data processing security, and Kubernetes (k8s) for efficient container orchestration and resource management for multi-tenancy. A secure, resource-efficient, and pluggable container orchestration system, called Pyramid, is proposed, which incurs minimal intrusive modifications to the commercial k8s. Pyramid puts a separate trusted k8s on top of the original k8s cluster and carefully cooperates between the two layers. The workflow within each layer is maximally preserved without significant changes. The untrusted layer manages resource scheduling across different tenants to improve utilization and passes the resource information to the trusted layer to launch actual computations secured by TEEs, with the help of carefully designed interface and protection mechanisms. Evaluation results show that Pyramid achieves 1.4X higher throughput on the data plane, with comparable control-plane performance to previous work. | 2026 | Practical Poisoning Attacks against Retrieval-Augmented GenerationabstractLarge language models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive natural language processing abilities but face challenges such as hallucination and outdated knowledge. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has emerged as a state-of-the-art approach to mitigate these issues. While RAG enhances LLM outputs, it remains vulnerable to poisoning attacks. Recent studies show that injecting poisoned texts into the knowledge database can compromise RAG systems, but most existing attacks assume that the attacker can insert a sufficient number of poisoned texts per query to outnumber correct-answer texts in retrieval, an assumption that is often unrealistic. To address this limitation, we propose CorruptRAG, a practical poisoning attack against RAG systems in which the attacker injects only a single poisoned text, enhancing both feasibility and stealth. Extensive experiments conducted on multiple large-scale datasets demonstrate that CorruptRAG achieves higher attack success rates than existing baselines. | 2026 | Who Taught the Lie? Responsibility Attribution for Poisoned Knowledge in Retrieval-Augmented GenerationabstractRetrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) integrates external knowledge into large language models to improve response quality. However, recent work has shown that RAG systems are highly vulnerable to poisoning attacks, where malicious texts are inserted into the knowledge database to influence model outputs. While several defenses have been proposed, they are often circumvented by more adaptive or sophisticated attacks. This paper presents RAGOrigin, a black-box responsibility attribution framework designed to identify which texts in the knowledge database are responsible for misleading or incorrect generations. Our method constructs a focused attribution scope tailored to each misgeneration event and assigns a responsibility score to each candidate text by evaluating its retrieval ranking, semantic relevance, and influence on the generated response. The system then isolates poisoned texts using an unsupervised clustering method. We evaluate RAGOrigin across seven datasets and fifteen poisoning attacks, including newly developed adaptive poisoning strategies and multi-attacker scenarios. Our approach outperforms existing baselines in identifying poisoned content and remains robust under dynamic and noisy conditions. These results suggest that RAGOrigin provides a practical and effective solution for tracing the origins of corrupted knowledge in RAG systems. | 2026 | SIsomap: Secure Collaborative Manifold Learning with Reducing Communication CostsabstractSecure manifold learning on datasets distributed among multiple data owners can benefit or even spawn many applications. For example, multiple service providers can jointly fit low-dimensional embeddings of their users' network behavior data to improve the accuracy of anomaly detection while addressing their privacy concerns about the datasets. In this paper, we focus on a classic manifold learning technique, known as isometric mapping (Isomap), and propose SIsomap, the first secure, distributed manifold learning system. We construct SIsomap based on secret sharing techniques and introduce careful optimizations. In particular, we propose two communication-efficient secure building blocks that focus on top-k and all-pairs shortest paths computation, respectively, and reduce secure operations by leveraging the characteristics of Isomap. Experimental results on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that our secure top-k and all-pairs shortest paths protocols are respectively up to 13.6× and 1818.5× faster than the state-of-the-art methods, and SIsomap as a whole is 11.1× to 28.8× faster than the baseline solution. | 2026 | Verifiable and Controllable Data Sharing With Compliance Checking in Cloud ComputingabstractData capsule provides a feasible solution for controllable data sharing, where data owners outsource their data capsules containing encrypted data and compliance-checking policies to the cloud server, and only valid users can run a compliant analysis program to process the decrypted data capsules in the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), without obtaining the raw data. However, existing schemes cannot achieve verifiable accesses and updates, which means that malicious servers may use corrupted/old data capsules to deceive users and TEE. In this paper, we introduce the concept of Verifiable Data Capsule (VDC) for secure and controllable data sharing. Specifically, we first design a lightweight authentication tag, dubbed Locally Verifiable Chameleon Tag (LVCT), which allows the data owner to bind all data capsules to a constant-size tag and enables users to recover the local tags for validating data capsules. On this basis, we present a concrete VDC scheme that utilizes a dual-level authentication structure to realize verifiable data updates, and verifiable state updates triggered by regular access without the aid of the data owner. Furthermore, we propose an efficient trust evaluation protocol to judge the credibility of cloud servers. Finally, both security analysis and performance evaluation demonstrate the practicability of the proposed scheme. | 2026 | BOMAP: A Round-Efficient Construction of Oblivious MapsabstractOblivious map is a cryptographic data structure for programs whose data access patterns exhibit some degree of predictability, which plays a pivot role in constructing high-security searchable encryption schemes that protect both search and access patterns. Typically, oblivious map schemes adopt the combination of an index tree and Oblivious RAM (ORAM) in their construction. However, the round complexity of access operations in these schemes is inherently linked to the height of the index tree, which is logarithmically proportional to the total number of blocks, denoted as$N$. This results in a traditional requirement of$O(\log N)$rounds of interaction per access, which is a significant inefficiency that hampers the practical applicability of oblivious maps. To this end, we design a new fixed-height index tree structure and employ it to construct a new oblivious map scheme, called BOMAP. This scheme features a small number of interaction rounds and does not require the client to store state information beyond the cache. Additionally, BOMAP achieves obliviousness with reduced padding in each access operation. We analyze the theoretical communication size for BOMAP and conclude that BOMAP has obvious advantages when an adaptive height is selected based on$N$(e.g., a 4-level index tree when$N=2^{24}$). Experimental results further demonstrate that the fewer interaction rounds and less padding strategy make BOMAP more efficient than previous oblivious map schemes. | 2026 | SP2Join: Secure and Practical Multi-Table Pairwise Equi-Join Queries Over Encrypted DatabasesabstractPractical equi-join queries over encrypted databases aim to provide clients with flexible query capabilities while safeguarding data confidentiality. So far, the most promising and practical solution is CHT, which is based on Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). However, such schemes can only support two-table equi-join queries, which are rather limited compared to Multi-Table Pairwise Equi-Join (MTPEJ). Furthermore, in terms of efficiency, throughput, and access pattern, the join implemented in TEEs is still problematic compared to a practical and secure scheme. In this work, we focus on this important type of equi-join, which facilitates join across any two tables among multiple tables. Specifically, we propose SP$^{2}$Join in this paper, the first MTPEJ framework that supports secure pairwise equi-join among multi-table by leveraging a novel oblivious pipeline join algorithm in TEEs. To validate our approach, we evaluate SP$^{2}$Join in MySQL using the benchmarks and real datasets, and the results demonstrate that SP$^{2}$Join is superior to the state-of-the-art in terms of secure equi-join. Particularly, our pipeline join query time is only 2.68% of CHT, yet throughput can reach up to 16.56 × of CHT. Even for MTPEJ, it is still 14.95% of CHT when implementing pairwise equi-join among 10 tables, with a time cost of approximately 140.30 ms. Siyi Lv, Zheli Liu, Fuchun Guo, Xiaofeng Chen 0001

| 2026 | Stinger: A Light-Weight Website Fingerprinting Defense Through Poisoning Packet SequencesabstractWebsite Fingerprinting (WF) attack can be mitigated throughrandom camouflageorpair camouflage.Random camouflageinserts random dummy packets into the traces according to pre-defined rules. It can be compromised easily by machine learning-based WF attacks.Pair camouflageobfuscates the distinguishing features of paired websites by inserting elaborated perturbations into raw traces, thereby misleading the attacker. It is costly in maintaining a perturbation generator for each pair of websites. Based on these insights, we proposeStinger, a novel data poisoning based WF defense, which enables effective defense against WF attacks with low bandwidth overhead and only maintains one generator for all websites.Stingerexploits the idea of poisoning by contaminating the model directly in such a way that the WF attacks only classify based on the inserted poison sequences, thus being low overhead and website independent. We experimentally evaluateStingerusing the DF and AWF datasets. The results show that Stinger improves the successful defending rate by an average of 20.37% and 22.83% while reducing overhead by 85.88% and 81.35%, respectively. | 2026 | Practical Framework for Privacy-Preserving and Byzantine-Robust Federated LearningabstractFederated Learning (FL) allows multiple clients to collaboratively train a model without sharing their private data. However, FL is vulnerable toByzantine attacks, where adversaries manipulate client models to compromise the federated model, andprivacy inference attacks, where adversaries exploit client models to infer private data. Existing defenses against both backdoor and privacy inference attacks introduce significant computational and communication overhead, creating a gap between theory and practice. To address this, we propose ABBR, a practical framework for Byzantine-robust and privacy-preserving FL. We are the first to utilize dimensionality reduction to speed up the private computation of complex filtering rules in privacy-preserving FL. Additionally, we analyze the accuracy loss of vector-wise filtering in low-dimensional space and introduce an adaptive tuning strategy to minimize the impact of malicious models that bypass filtering on the global model. We implement ABBR with state-of-the-art Byzantine-robust aggregation rules and evaluate it on public datasets, showing that it runs significantly faster, has minimal communication overhead, and maintains nearly the same Byzantine-resilience as the baselines. | 2025 | Prompt-Guided Internal States for Hallucination Detection of Large Language ModelsabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities across a variety of tasks in different domains. However, they sometimes generate responses that are logically coherent but factually incorrect or misleading, which is known as LLM hallucinations. Data-driven supervised methods train hallucination detectors by leveraging the internal states of LLMs, but detectors trained on specific domains often struggle to generalize well to other domains. In this paper, we aim to enhance the cross-domain performance of supervised detectors with only in-domain data. We propose a novel framework, prompt-guided internal states for hallucination detection of LLMs, namely PRISM. By utilizing appropriate prompts to guide changes to the structure related to text truthfulness in LLMs’ internal states, we make this structure more salient and consistent across texts from different domains. We integrated our framework with existing hallucination detection methods and conducted experiments on datasets from different domains. The experimental results indicate that our framework significantly enhances the cross-domain generalization of existing hallucination detection methods. | 2025 | RebirthDay Attack: Reviving DNS Cache Poisoning with the Birthday ParadoxabstractDNS cache poisoning is a persistent game of attack and defense, posing an enduring challenge for the DNS community. Significant efforts have been made to uncover, detect, and mitigate vulnerabilities that increase the risk of cache poisoning. However, no work has systematically revisited whether the original cache poisoning attack based on the Birthday Paradox remains effective. In this work, we introduce RebirthDay, a novel DNS cache poisoning attack targeting recursive resolvers and forwarders, reviving the classic DNS Birthday attack that no longer works since 2002. RebirthDay exploits newly uncovered, protocol-compliant vulnerabilities in DNS extension implementations to bypass the query aggregation mechanism intended to prevent DNS Birthday attacks that has not been well understood. We uncovered that 18 out of 22 mainstream DNS software are vulnerable due to weaknesses in the processing of a DNS extension (i.e., ECS option), specifically lacking or incorrectly implemented ECS coherence checks when handling DNS queries and responses, demonstrating the widespread susceptibility to RebirthDay. These flaws could be exploited to circumvent the query aggregation mechanism and launch RebirthDay attacks. Through comprehensive evaluation, we showed that RebirthDay attacks are highly practical and can have significant real-world impact, affecting 16 router vendors, 14 public DNS services, and 365K (15%) open DNS resolvers. We have reported the identified vulnerabilities to affected vendors and discussed mitigation solutions with them. | 2025 | Probe before You Talk: Towards Black-box Defense against Backdoor Unalignment for Large Language ModelsabstractBackdoor unalignment attacks against Large Language Models (LLMs) enable the stealthy compromise of safety alignment using a hidden trigger while evading normal safety auditing. These attacks pose significant threats to the applications of LLMs in the real-world Large Language Model as a Service (LLMaaS) setting, where the deployed model is a fully black-box system that can only interact through text. Furthermore, the sample-dependent nature of the attack target exacerbates the threat. Instead of outputting a fixed label, the backdoored LLM follows the semantics of any malicious command with the hidden trigger, significantly expanding the target space. In this paper, we introduce BEAT, a black-box defense that detects triggered samples during inference to deactivate the backdoor. It is motivated by an intriguing observation (dubbed the **probe concatenate effect**), where concatenated triggered samples significantly reduce the refusal rate of the backdoored LLM towards a malicious probe, while non-triggered samples have little effect. Specifically, BEAT identifies whether an input is triggered by measuring the degree of distortion in the output distribution of the probe before and after concatenation with the input. Our method addresses the challenges of sample-dependent targets from an opposite perspective. It captures the impact of the trigger on the refusal signal (which is sample-independent) instead of sample-specific successful attack behaviors. It overcomes black-box access limitations by using multiple sampling to approximate the output distribution.
Extensive experiments are conducted on various backdoor attacks and LLMs (including the closed-source GPT-3.5-turbo), verifying the effectiveness and efficiency of our defense.
Besides, we also preliminarily verify that BEAT can effectively defend against popular jailbreak attacks, as they can be regarded as "natural backdoors". | 2025 | EP-Detector: Automatic Detection of Error-Prone Operation Anomalies in Android ApplicationsabstractAndroid applications are pervasively adopted and heavily relied on in our daily life, leading to the growing demand for enhanced user experiences, such as ease for operation and robustness. Nevertheless, developers continue to prioritize traditional functionality and performance, overlooking the pivotal role of user experience in real-world scenarios. For example, poorly designed page elements can lead to user confusion, resulting in unexpected outcomes, termed as the error-prone operation anomalies (EPAs). In this work, we undertake the first effort to uncover the underlying essence of the EPA problem. To achieve this objective, we investigated the root causes of EPAs from three dimensions, i.e., subject, object and environment. These causes were identified by multi-stage attribute capturing and precise similarity computation. In this process, the causes are categorized into fine-grained classes, namely confusing behaviours, unsuitable layout, and resource overload. Building upon these insights, we propose a dynamic GUI-based testing tool EP-Detector to facilitate detecting the EPAs in real-world apps. The EP-Detector is equipped with widget-exploration based target navigation and automatic test oracle, enabling it to detect error-prone page elements and simulate events with both comprehensiveness and precision. To systematically study the prevalence and severity of real-world EPAs, we conducted experiments on 53 popular Android apps with EP-Detector. The confirmed results not only validate the high precision and completeness of EP-Detector but also highlight that EPAs are prevalent in current apps, with at least one EPA existing in every two page widgets on average, and 28.3% of them may lead to security and functionality issues or risks. | 2025 | Don't Mess with Bro's Cheese! An Empirical Study of Resource Conflict in Android Multi-windowabstractThe multi-window mode in Android has greatly improved productivity and usability by allowing multiple apps to run concurrently. However, alongside the advantages, such mode also introduces unforeseen risks in both functionality and security. In this work, we present the first systematic study to identify a previously unexplored class of issues, termed Multi-window Resource Conflicts (MRCs). Such conflicts occur when multiple app windows access the same system resource concurrently, potentially leading to crashes, functionality failures or unintended behaviors. To enhance the robustness and security of Android multi-window execution, we conduct a systematic and in-depth empirical study on the MRCs. We begin with a comprehensive root cause analysis, categorizing MRCs into three fundamental types based on their triggering patterns and affected resource states. To enable large-scale detection, we develop MRC-Detector, a static analysis framework that automatically identifies MRC issues in Android apps. Our manual verification confirms its high accuracy and effectiveness. We apply the MRC-Detector to the detection of over 150k real-world apps from F-droid and Google Play, uncovering the prevalence of MRC risks. Additionally, the distribution of MRC issues is analyzed in depth across multiple dimensions, including MRC type, APK size, app source and security classification. We further investigated the recognition and confirmation from developers and received 14 positive responses from vendors and project maintainers. Finally, comprehensive mitigation strategies are discussed. The materials of the study are available at: https://github.com/Huimilia/MRC. | 2025 | Scalable Private k-Nearest Neighbors Search Based on Secret Sharingabstractk-nearest neighbors search (kNN) is a fundamental algorithm widely used in signal and image processing, recommendation systems, and pattern recognition. Due to the sensitivity of data privacy and laws, directly disclosing raw data for kNN search between entities is often unacceptable in many cases. In this paper, we propose a kNN search scheme based on secret sharing techniques. Our scheme preserves the privacy of both the data owner’s datasets and the user’s queries, except that the user learns the query results. We introduce a communication-efficient secure top-k protocol and construct two secure kNN search protocols: a protocol that searches kNN results exactly, and a more efficient approximate protocol that leverages clustering-based preprocessing. For the clustering-based protocol, we also design an efficient cluster retrieval approach and a compact kNN search phase. Experiments on three large real-world datasets containing 1M/10M samples with 96/128 dimensions demonstrate that the proposed kNN search protocols achieve a speedup of 2.77× to 10.67× compared to the state-of-the-art scheme. | 2025 | Traceback of Poisoning Attacks to Retrieval-Augmented GenerationabstractLarge language models (LLMs) integrated with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems improve accuracy by leveraging external knowledge sources. However, recent research has revealed RAG's susceptibility to poisoning attacks, where the attacker injects poisoned texts into the knowledge database, leading to attacker-desired responses. Existing defenses, which predominantly focus on inference-time mitigation, have proven insufficient against sophisticated attacks. In this paper, we introduce RAGForensics, the first traceback system for RAG, designed to identify poisoned texts within the knowledge database that are responsible for the attacks. RAGForensics operates iteratively, first retrieving a subset of texts from the database and then utilizing a specially crafted prompt to guide an LLM in detecting potential poisoning texts. Empirical evaluations across multiple datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of RAGForensics against state-of-the-art poisoning attacks. This work pioneers the traceback of poisoned texts in RAG systems, providing a practical and promising defense mechanism to enhance their security. | 2025 | An Efficient and Collusion-Resistant Key Parameters Predistribution System for Day-Ahead Electricity AuctionsabstractIn recent years, extensive research has been conducted on the design of electricity auctions. However, most existing solutions focus mainly on privacy preservation, efficiency, and bidding strategies, while overlooking the critical issue of key parameters distribution—particularly in day-ahead electricity auctions. At the start of an auction, it is essential to distribute key parameters to all participants in a timely, synchronized, and efficient manner. To address the challenges of fairness, collusion resistance, and efficiency in the pre-distribution of key parameters, we propose an efficient and collusion-resistant key parameters pre-distribution system for day-ahead electricity auctions. As a core component, we design a novel cryptographic primitive, termed identity-based timed-release proxy re-encryption. Based on the truncated q-ABDHE hardness assumption, we instantiate two concrete schemes tailored to different security requirements. The proposed schemes eliminate the need for public key authenticity verification, support efficient privilege revocation, and provide resistance against proxy-bidder collusion attacks. Additionally, the schemes feature user-scale-independent key and ciphertext sizes, leading to significantly improved system efficiency compared to existing approaches. | 2025 | Fratricide! Hijacking in Android Multi-WindowabstractAndroid's multi-window solutions allow several apps to coexist on one screen, providing powerful functionalities and appealing visuals for modern mobile devices. However, this opens the door for potential malware hijacking attacks. In our study, we unveiled Android's insufficient security measures against malware activity in multi-window modes, and identified strategies on how to bypass these measures. We first introduced long-term monitoring methods through background services or malicious sub-window activities, and then designed and implemented 7 multi-window hijacking strategies to achieve multi-window hijacking in the three mainstream multi-window modes. To evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the attacks, we ran the hijacking in different system versions supporting multi-window solutions, and simulated the hijacking on 262 popular apps. All of the apps suffer from at least two types of multi-window hijacking attacks, and more than 65% of them can be attacked by all the 7 multi-window hijacking attacks. Furthermore, we designed and distributed a questionnaire to gather user opinions towards these attacks. 85% of respondents believe that the multi-window hijacking is highly covert and difficult to defend against. Of significance, we received acknowledgement and award fund from development teams of impactful apps. Chenkai Guo, Tianhong Wang 0010, Qianlu Wang, Naipeng Dong, Xiangyang Luo 0001, Zheli Liu |

LUNA: Efficient Backward-Private Dynamic Symmetric Searchable Encryption Scheme With Secure Deletion in Encrypted DatabaseabstractDynamic symmetric searchable encryption (SSE) enables clients to perform searches and updates on an encrypted database outsourced to an untrusted server while preserving the privacy of data and queries. For restricting information leakage, it is very important to limit what the server can learn about the deleted data during searches after the deletion, i.e., to satisfy backward privacy. However, previous backward privacy definitions only considered the logical deletion of keywords in documents while ignoring security risks caused by the actual deletion of documents. Moreover, existing SSE schemes often depend on heavy cryptographic primitives for achieving high-level backward privacy, which greatly degrades the end-to-end performance. To this end, we define a new backward privacy notion named BP-DEL, which restricts the information leakage of the actual deletion. Moreover, we design a hybrid index structure that provides BP-DEL for SSE schemes such that they support deletions securely. Based on the hybrid index, we propose a BP-DEL construction named LUNA and design its protocols with a trusted execution environment (TEE) to maintain the index efficiently. Finally, we implement LUNA in the MySQL database by encapsulating it in UDFs. The experimental results show that LUNA has a performance much better than previous works satisfying BP-DEL. | 2025 | SMPCache: Towards More Efficient SQL Queries in Multi-Party Collaborative Data AnalysisabstractPrivacy-preserving collaborative data analysis is a popular research direction in recent years. Among all such analysis tasks, privacy-preserving SQL queries on multi-party databases are of particular industrial interest. Although the privacy concern can be addressed by many cryptographic tools, such as secure multi-party computation (MPC), the efficiency of executing such SQL queries is far from satisfactory, especially for high-volume databases. In particular, existing MPC-based solutions treat each SQL query as an isolated task and launch it from scratch, in spite of the nature that many SQL queries are done regularly and somewhat overlap in their functionalities. In this work, we are motivated to exploit this nature to improve the efficiency of MPC-based, privacy-preserving SQL queries. We introduce a cache-like optimization mechanism. To ensure a higher cache hit rate and reduce redundant MPC operators, we present a cache structure different from that of plain databases and design a set of cache strategies. Our optimization mechanism, SMPCache, can be built upon secret-sharing-based MPC frameworks, which attract much attention from the industry. To demonstrate the utility of SMPCache, we implement it on Rosetta, an open-source MPC library, and use real-world datasets to launch extensive experiments on some basic SQL operators (e.g., Filter, Order-by, Aggregation, and Inner-Join) and some representative composite SQL queries. To give a data point, we note that SMPCache can achieve most up to 3536× efficiency improvement on the TPC-DS dataset and 562× on the TPC-H dataset at a moderate storage cost. We also apply SMPCache to the basic SQL operators (Filter, Order-by, Group-by, Aggregation, and Inner-join) of the Secrecy framework, achieving up to 127.3× efficiency improvement. | 2025 | EdgeSyn: Privacy-Preserving Data Publishing on Edge Network over Infinite Multimedia Data StreamabstractTo privately publish sensitive multimedia data in an edge network with fog devices, one of the best privacy-preserving solutions is to use differential privacy (DP) mechanisms. However, existing DP data publication mechanisms for the infinite data stream of edge networks mainly focus on publishing data with specific types of data or a set of predetermined queries. This approach is not suitable for multimedia data with numerous features that require a more flexible data publishing mechanism. In this article, we propose EdgeSyn, a novel mechanism for accurately publishing multimedia data over infinite data streams in an edge network. It allocates privacy budgets with a sliding window, adopting data synthesis mechanisms to support dynamic publishing without loss of accuracy. In more detail, EdgeSyn addresses the limitations associated with data types in prior data stream publishing approaches and introduces a privacy budget management strategy that optimally allocates budgets for the implementation of data synthesis mechanisms over an infinite data stream. The experimental results show that EdgeSyn performs well under different privacy budgets and various lengths of active windows. Zhewei Liu, Zhengdao Li, Jingyu Jia, Siyi Lv, Tong Li 0011, Zheli Liu

Slark: A Performance Robust Decentralized Inter-Datacenter Deadline-Aware Coflows Scheduling Framework With Local InformationabstractInter-datacenter network applications generate massive coflows for purposes, e.g., backup, synchronization, and analytics, with deadline requirements. Decentralized coflow scheduling frameworks are desirable for their scalability in cross-domain deployment but grappling with the challenge of information agnosticism for lack of cross-domain privileges. Current information-agnostic coflow scheduling methods are incompatible with decentralized frameworks for relying on centralized controllers to continuously monitor and learn from coflow global transmission states to infer global coflow information. Alternative methods propose mechanisms for decentralized global coflow information gathering and synchronization. However, they require dedicated physical hardware or control logic, which could be impractical for incremental deployment. This article proposes Slark, a decentralized deadline-aware coflow scheduling framework, which meets coflows’ soft and hard deadline requirements using only local traffic information. It eschews requiring global coflow transmission states and dedicated hardware or control logic by leveraging multiple software-implemented scheduling agents working independently on each node and integrating such information agnosticism into node-specific bandwidth allocation by modeling it as a robust optimization problem with flow information on the other nodes represented as uncertain parameters. Subsequently, we validate the performance robustness of Slark by investigating how perturbations in the optimal objective function value and the associated optimal solution are affected by uncertain parameters. Finally, we propose a firebug-swarm-optimization-based heuristic algorithm to tackle the non-convexity in our problem. Experimental results demonstrate that Slark can significantly enhance transmission revenue and increase soft and hard deadline guarantee ratios by 10.52% and 7.99% on average. | 2025 | Open Source, Hidden Costs: A Systematic Literature Review on OSS License ManagementabstractIntegrating third-party software components is a common practice in modern software development, offering significant advantages in terms of efficiency and innovation. However, this practice is fraught with risks related to software licensing. A lack of understanding may lead to disputes, which can pose serious legal and operational challenges. To these ends, both academia and industry have conducted various investigations and proposed solutions and tools to deal with these challenges. However, significant limitations still remain. Moreover, the rapid evolution of open-source software (OSS) licenses, as well as the rapidly incorporated generative software engineering techniques, such as large language models for code (CodeLLMs), are placing greater demands on the systematic management of software license risks. To unveil the severe challenges and explore possible future directions, we conduct the first systematic literature review (SLR) on 80 carefully selected OSS license-related papers, classifying existing research into three key categories, i.e., license identification, license risk assessment, and license risk mitigation. Based on these, we discuss challenges in existing solutions, conclude the opportunities to shed light on future research directions and offer practical recommendations for practitioners. We hope this thorough review will help bridge the gaps between academia and industry and accelerate the ecosystem-wide governance of legitimate software risks within the software engineering community. | 2024 | LAN: Learning Adaptive Neighbors for Real-Time Insider Threat DetectionabstractEnterprises and organizations are faced with potential threats from insider employees that may lead to serious consequences. Previous studies on insider threat detection (ITD) mainly focus on detecting abnormal users or abnormal time periods (e.g., a week or a day). However, a user may have hundreds of thousands of activities in the log, and even within a day there may exist thousands of activities for a user, requiring a high investigation budget to verify abnormal users or activities given the detection results. On the other hand, existing works are mainly post-hoc methods rather than real-time detection, which can not report insider threats in time before they cause loss. In this paper, we conduct the first study towards real-time ITD at activity level, and present a fine-grained and efficient framework LAN. Specifically, LAN simultaneously learns the temporal dependencies within an activity sequence and the relationships between activities across sequences with graph structure learning. Moreover, to mitigate the data imbalance problem in ITD, we propose a novel hybrid prediction loss, which integrates self-supervision signals from normal activities and supervision signals from abnormal activities into a unified loss for anomaly detection. We evaluate the performance of LAN on two widely used datasets, i.e., CERT r4.2 and CERT r5.2. Extensive and comparative experiments demonstrate the superiority of LAN, outperforming 9 state-of-the-art baselines by at least 8.43% and 6.35% in AUC for real-time ITD on CERT r4.2 and r5.2, respectively. Moreover, LAN can be also applied to post-hoc ITD, surpassing 8 competitive baselines by at least 7.70% and 4.03% in AUC on two datasets. Finally, the ablation study, parameter analysis, and compatibility analysis evaluate the impact of each module and hyper-parameter in LAN. | 2024 | ABSyn: An Accurate Differentially Private Data Synthesis Scheme With Adaptive Selection and Batch ProcessesabstractIn private data publishing, a promising solution is generating synthetic data that enables any query on the private dataset while satisfying differential privacy. Over the past decade, researchers mainly focused on improving the query accuracy of synthetic data. However, the limitations of existing works restrict them from achieving a better trade-off between accuracy and privacy. In this paper, we propose ABSyn, a novel scheme for differentially private data synthesis. Under the Select-Measure-Generate paradigm, ABSyn has an adaptive mechanism for precisely selecting marginals and follows the batch processes. Our adaptive-batch scheme can provide a well-selected marginal set and the optimal allocation of privacy budget, which makes its synthetic data achieve high accuracy without compromising privacy. We implement an efficient prototype of ABSyn and compare it with existing works by analyzing public datasets. Experimental results show that ABSyn achieves query accuracy on synthetic datasets by a factor of$1.26\times $and efficiency by a factor of$18.60\times $over the state-of-the-art scheme on average. | 2024 | Distributed Differential Privacy via Shuffling Versus Aggregation: A Curious StudyabstractHow to achieve distributed differential privacy (DP) without a trusted central party is of great interest in both theory and practice. Recently, the shuffle model has attracted much attention. Unlike the local DP model in which the users send randomized data directly to the data collector/analyzer, in the shuffle model an intermediate untrusted shuffler is introduced to randomly permute the data, which have already been randomized by the users, before they reach the analyzer. The most appealing aspect is that while shuffling does not explicitly add more noise to the data, it can make privacy better. The privacy amplification effect in consequence means the users need to add less noise to the data than in the local DP model, but can achieve the same level of differential privacy. Thus, protocols in the shuffle model can provide better accuracy than those in the local DP model. What looks interesting to us is that the architecture of the shuffle model is similar to private aggregation, which has been studied for more than a decade. In private aggregation, locally randomized user data are aggregated by an intermediate untrusted aggregator. Thus, our question is whether aggregation also exhibits some sort of privacy amplification effect? And if so, how good is this “aggregation model” in comparison with the shuffle model. We conducted the first comparative study between the two, covering privacy amplification, functionalities, protocol accuracy, and practicality. The results as yet suggest that the new shuffle model does not have obvious advantages over the old aggregation model. On the contrary, protocols in the aggregation model outperform those in the shuffle model, sometimes significantly, in many aspects. As the cornerstone, we propose${\sf FIVE}$, the firstFiltering-plus-Verification algorithm tailored to programmable switches to achieve efficient multiple pattern matching (i.e., the core of DPI). Briefly, the filtering phase introduces a multi-window parallel shift-or algorithm to rapidly screen out all the “suspicious” packet payloads. Meanwhile, the verification phase innovates a level-based state encoding scheme for the Aho–Corasick (AC) algorithm, which substantially increases the number of supported patterns and consequently figures out more “guilty” payloads. We implement the prototype of${\sf NetDPI}$in both software and hardware programmable switches (i.e., BMv2 and Barefoot Tofino2) and make them publicly available. Extensive evaluations indicate that${\sf NetDPI}$provides orders of magnitude improvement in throughput compared to the typical cloud-delivered DPI solutions, and besides${\sf FIVE}$greatly reduces the memory consumption compared to the alternative in-network exact match algorithms under a variety of system settings including different DPI pattern sets and malware-packet percentages. | 2024 | Can Coverage Criteria Guide Failure Discovery for Image Classifiers? An Empirical StudyabstractQuality assurance of deep neural networks (DNNs) is crucial for the deployment of DNN-based software, especially in mission- and safety-critical tasks. Inspired by structural white-box testing in traditional software, many test criteria have been proposed to test DNNs, i.e., to exhibit erroneous behaviors by activating new test units that have not been covered, such as new neurons, values, and decision paths. Many studies have been done to evaluate the effectiveness of DNN test coverage criteria. However, existing empirical studies mainly focused on measuring the effectiveness of DNN test criteria for improving the adversarial robustness of DNNs, while ignoring the correctness property when testing DNNs. To fill in this gap, we conduct a comprehensive study on 11 structural coverage criteria, 6 widely-used image datasets, and 9 popular DNNs. We investigate the effectiveness of DNN coverage criteria over natural inputs from four aspects: (1) the correlation between test coverage and test diversity; (2) the effects of criteria parameters and target DNNs; (3) the effectiveness to prioritize in-distribution natural inputs that lead to erroneous behaviors; and (4) the capability to detect out-of-distribution natural samples. Our findings include: (1) For measuring the diversity, coverage criteria considering the relationship between different neurons are more effective than coverage criteria that treat each neuron independently. For instance, the neuron-path criteria (i.e., SNPC and ANPC) show high correlation with test diversity, which is promising to measure test diversity for DNNs. (2) The hyper-parameters have a big influence on the effectiveness of criteria, especially those relevant to the granularity of test criteria. Meanwhile, the computational complexity is one of the important issues to be considered when designing deep learning test coverage criteria, especially for large-scale models. (3) Test criteria related to data distribution (i.e., LSA and DSA, SNAC, and NBC) can be used to prioritize both in-distribution natural faults and out-of-distribution inputs. Furthermore, for OOD detection, the boundary metrics (i.e., SNAC and NBC) are also effective indicators with lower computational costs and higher detection efficiency compared with LSA and DSA. These findings motivate follow-up research on scalable test coverage criteria that improve the correctness of DNNs. Sihan Xu, Lingling Fan 0003, Xiangrui Cai, Linyu Li 0002, Zheli Liu

Boost Off/On-Manifold Adversarial Robustness for Deep Learning with Latent Representation MixupabstractDeep neural networks excel at solving intuitive tasks that are hard to describe formally, such as classification, but are easily deceived by maliciously crafted samples, leading to misclassification. Recently, it has been observed that the attack-specific robustness of models obtained through adversarial training does not generalize well to novel or unseen attacks. While data augmentation through mixup in the input space has been shown to improve the generalization and robustness of models, there has been limited research progress on mixup in the latent space. Furthermore, almost no research on mixup has considered the robustness of models against emerging on-manifold adversarial attacks. In this paper, we first design a latent-space data augmentation strategy called dual-mode manifold interpolation, which allows for interpolating disentangled representations of source samples in two modes: convex mixing and binary mask mixing, to synthesize semantic samples. We then propose a resilient training framework, LatentRepresentationMixup (LarepMixup), that employs mixed examples and softlabel-based cross-entropy loss to refine the boundary. Experimental investigations on diverse datasets (CIFAR-10, SVHN, ImageNet-Mixed10) demonstrate that our approach delivers competitive performance in training models that are robust to off/on-manifold adversarial example attacks compared to leading mixup training techniques. | 2023 | LiResolver: License Incompatibility Resolution for Open Source SoftwareabstractOpen source software (OSS) licenses regulate the conditions under which OSS can be legally reused, distributed, and modified. However, a common issue arises when incorporating third-party OSS accompanied with licenses, i.e., license incompatibility, which occurs when multiple licenses exist in one project and there are conflicts between them. Despite being problematic, fixing license incompatibility issues requires substantial efforts due to the lack of license understanding and complex package dependency. In this paper, we propose LiResolver, a fine-grained, scalable, and flexible tool to resolve license incompatibility issues for open source software. Specifically, it first understands the semantics of licenses through fine-grained entity extraction and relation extraction. Then, it detects and resolves license incompatibility issues by recommending official licenses in priority. When no official licenses can satisfy the constraints, it generates a custom license as an alternative solution. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of LiResolver, with 4.09% false positive (FP) rate and 0.02% false negative (FN) rate for incompatibility issue localization, and 62.61% of 230 real-world incompatible projects resolved by LiResolver. | 2023 | LiSum: Open Source Software License Summarization with Multi-Task LearningabstractOpen source software (OSS) licenses regulate the conditions under which users can reuse, modify, and distribute the software legally. However, there exist various OSS licenses in the community, written in a formal language, which are typically long and complicated to understand. In this paper, we conducted a 661-participants online survey to investigate the perspectives and practices of developers towards OSS licenses. The user study revealed an indeed need for an automated tool to facilitate license understanding. Motivated by the user study and the fast growth of licenses in the community, we propose the first study towards automated license summarization. Specifically, we released the first high quality text summarization dataset and designed two tasks, i.e., license text summarization (LTS), aiming at generating a relatively short summary for an arbitrary license, and license term classification (LTC), focusing on the attitude inference towards a predefined set of key license terms (e.g., Distribute). Aiming at the two tasks, we present LiSum, a multi-task learning method to help developers overcome the obstacles of understanding OSS licenses. Comprehensive experiments demonstrated that the proposed jointly training objective boosted the performance on both tasks, surpassing state-of-the-art baselines with gains of at least 5 points w.r.t. F1 scores of four summarization metrics and achieving 95.13% micro average F1 score for classification simultaneously. We released all the datasets, the replication package, and the questionnaires for the community. Linyu Li 0002, Sihan Xu, Yang Liu 0003, Xiangrui Cai, Jiarun Wu, Wenli Song, Zheli Liu

Secure Aggregation is Insecure: Category Inference Attack on Federated LearningabstractFederated learning allows a large number of resource-constrained clients to train a globally-shared model together without sharing local data. These clients usually have only a few classes (categories) of data for training, where the data distribution is non-iid (not independent identically distributed). In this article, we put forward the concept ofcategory privacyfor the first time to indicatewhich classes of data a client has, which is an important but ignored privacy goal in the federated learning with non-iid data. Although secure aggregation protocols are designed for federated learning to protect the input privacy of clients, we perform the first systematic study oncategory inference attackand demonstrate that these protocols cannot fully protect category privacy. We design a differential selection strategy and two de-noising approaches to achieve the attack goal successfully. In our evaluation, we apply the attack to non-iid federated learning settings with various datasets. On MNIST, CIFAR-10, AG_news, and DBPedia dataset, our attack achieves$>90\%$accuracy measured in F1-score in most cases. We further consider a possible detection method and propose two strategies to make the attack more inconspicuous. | 2023 | Verifiable and Redactable Blockchains With Fully Editing OperationsabstractBlockchain technology has been highly praised for its immutability, attracting considerable attention in the academic and industrial community. However, since permanent storage in blockchains would result in copyright disputes and harmful information spreads, it is desired to equip blockchains with mutability nowadays for legal and moral duty restrictions. A redactable blockchain is a variation, which enables the editing of block objects without affecting other blocks in the blockchain. Most existing redactable blockchains can only support editing operations such as modification and deletion, rather than insertion. However, insertion is necessary for some scenarios, especially when patching codes are needed for smart contracts and mistaken deletions occur. In addition, we argue that the verifiability of blockchains is also significantly important, especially for the redactable ones, in which one block may have multiple versions. Hence, an efficient mechanism is required to invalidate history versions and incent distributed adoptions of editing operations. In this paper, we propose a verifiable and redactable blockchain with fully editing operations for the first time. One distinguishable property is the simultaneous achievement of fully editability of block objects and verifiability of blockchain state, with acceptable extra cost. Specifically, we construct the redactable blockchain based on a double trapdoor chameleon hash family, enabling computationally efficient and key-exposure resistant block editing. Additionally, we combine trapdoorless universal accumulators and the largest sequence number principle to make the blockchain state verifiable. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive analysis and extensive experiments to demonstrate the security and feasibility of the proposed redactable blockchain. | 2023 | Privacy-Preserving Multi-Granular Federated Neural Architecture Search - A General FrameworkabstractJointly learning from multiple datasets can help building versatile intelligent systems yet may give rise to serious concerns of data privacy and model selection. Specifically, on the one hand, these datasets can be distributed at various local clients, who may not be willing or do not ought to share data with each other. On the other hand, it is unrealistic to choose a model architecture that can well suit the disparate patterns and distributions carried by the various datasets in a priori. Whereas many works in federated learning [1] and neural architecture search [2] have been proposed to address one of the two concerns, very few have attempted the both. To close the gap, in this paper we deliver a framework, termedMulti-Granular Federated Neural Architecture Search(MGFNAS), to enable the automation of model architecture search in a federated and thus privacy-preserved setting. We argue that our MGFNAS framework is general in the sense that it does not impose any restriction on the search space or strategy, such that most existing neural architecture search techniques can be readily implemented in. The main idea of our framework is to search the optimal neural network architecture in two levels of granularity, enabling the neural-operator-basedmicro-levelsearch and the cell-basedmacro-levelsearch. The main challenge of implementing our framework lies in the fact that, due to the decentralized nature, the local architectures searched by multiple clients can differ drastically in order to fit their own datasets, while a general method to form the global model by aggregating the local architectures in both micro and macro levels is missing. To solve the issue, we propose a novel aggregation function, named Network Architecture Probabilistic Aggregation (NAPA). The key idea of our NAPA function is to treat the network architectures as graphs, of which the sub-graph structures being frequently appeared across multiple clients are modeled by probabilistic distributions. At each round, a global model is formed by sampling from those distributions in an exploration-exploitation fashion. Extensive experiments are carried out, and the results substantiate the viability and effectiveness of our proposed framework. Zijie Pan, Weixuan Tang 0004, Jin Li 0002, Yi He 0007, Zheli Liu

LiDetector: License Incompatibility Detection for Open Source SoftwareabstractOpen-source software (OSS) licenses dictate the conditions, which should be followed to reuse, distribute, and modify software. Apart from widely-used licenses such as the MIT License, developers are also allowed to customize their own licenses (called custom license), whose descriptions are more flexible. The presence of such various licenses imposes challenges to understand licenses and their compatibility. To avoid financial and legal risks, it is essential to ensure license compatibility when integrating third-party packages or reusing code accompanied with licenses. In this work, we propose LiDetector , an effective tool that extracts and interprets OSS licenses (including both official licenses and custom licenses), and detects license incompatibility among these licenses. Specifically, LiDetector introduces a learning-based method to automatically identify meaningful license terms from an arbitrary license, and employs Probabilistic Context-Free Grammar (PCFG) to infer rights and obligations for incompatibility detection. Experiments demonstrate that LiDetector outperforms existing methods with 93.28% precision for term identification, and 91.09% accuracy for right and obligation inference, and can effectively detect incompatibility with 10.06% FP rate and 2.56% FN rate. Furthermore, with LiDetector , our large-scale empirical study on 1,846 projects reveals that 72.91% of the projects are suffering from license incompatibility, including popular ones such as the MIT License and the Apache License. We highlighted lessons learned from perspectives of different stakeholders and made all related data and the replication package publicly available to facilitate follow-up research. | 2023 | QoS-Aware Diversified Service SelectionabstractIn QoS-aware service selection, merely considering the prediction accuracy of QoS is prone to redundant results, which hinders practical service composition and also undermines user's preference for rich service attributes. To address the problem, a novel diversity-aware graph-based QoS prediction model—DSSN (Diversified Service Selection Network) is proposed in this work. DSSN alleviates selection redundancy through enhancing the selection diversity besides QoS prediction accuracy. To improve the model performance, techniques like high-order message propagation and multi-task structure are integrated into the graph based neural network model. And to enhance the service diversity, a service distance based attention mechanism is designed to embed the users in the model, so that users are connected to services with diverse attributes. We evaluate DSSN on a public dataset via extensive comparison experiments with both diversity-aware and non-diversified service selection models. In the comparison experiments, the DSSN: 1) clearly outperforms the state-of-the-art diversity-aware models in both accuracy and diversity; 2) achieves concrete diversity improvement at the cost of an acceptable decrease in the QoS prediction compared to non-diversified baselines. The results demonstrate that DSSN is more suitable for diversity-aware service selection with ambiguous user requirements than traditional QoS-centric selection scenarios. | 2022 | Eurus: Towards an Efficient Searchable Symmetric Encryption With Size Pattern ProtectionabstractTo achieve efficiently search and update on outsourced encrypted data, dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE) was proposed by just leaking some well-defined leakages. Though small, many recent works show that an attacker can exploit these leakages to undermine the security of existing DSSE schemes. In particular, an attacker can exploit even seemingly harmless size pattern to perform severe attacks. Many exiting schemes resort to oblivious RAM (ORAM) to hide search/access pattern; however, even such powerful cryptographic primitive cannot protect size pattern leakage. In this article, we first show that size pattern can lead to more information leakages, which is not well studied or protected by existing schemes. We then extend the existing privacy notion for DSSE to capture the size pattern leakage, achieving a strong forward and backward privacy definition. Following the definition, we propose a new DSSE scheme Eurus. Eurus can eliminate search/access pattern by relying on a multi-server ORAM scheme, meanwhile reducing size pattern with reasonable efficiency. We show that Eurus can reduce leakage significantly with better efficiency, compared with state-of-the-art leakage reduction schemes. | 2022 | EncodeORE: Reducing Leakage and Preserving Practicality in Order-Revealing EncryptionabstractOrder-preserving encryption (OPE) is a cryptographic primitive that preserves the order of plaintexts. In the past few years, many OPE schemes were proposed to solve the problem of executing range queries in encrypted databases. However, OPE leaks some certain information (for example, the order of ciphertext), so it is vulnerable to many attacks. Subsequently, order-revealing encryption (ORE) was proposed by Bonehet al.(Eurocrypt 2015) as a generalization of order-preserving encryption. It breaks through the limitation of the numeric order of OPE plaintext. It implements ciphertext comparison for any specific form of plaintext through a publicly computable comparison function. In this article, we aim to design a new ORE scheme which reduces the leakages and preserves the practicality in terms of ciphertext length and encryption time. We first propose the hybrid model namedHybridORE. Then, we propose an improved scheme namedEncodeOREwhich achieves acceptable security and appropriate ciphertext length. They both explore the encode strategy of encoding plaintext into different parts and apply suitable ORE algorithms to each part according to its security characteristics to reduce leakages. Compared with the typical CLWW scheme (FSE 2016) and Lewi-Wu (CCS 2016) in large domain, they have fewer leakages. The experiment shows that the proposedEncodeOREis very practical. | 2022 | Blockchain-Based Secure Deduplication and Shared Auditing in Decentralized StorageabstractData deduplication and public auditing are significant for providing secure and efficient network storage services. However, the existing data deduplication schemes supporting auditing not only cannot effectively alleviate the threats of the single point of failure and duplicate-faking attack, but also have to bear the massive waste of computation and storage resources caused by metadata redundancy and repetitive audit tasks. In this article, we propose a blockchain-based secure deduplication and shared auditing scheme in decentralized storage. Specifically, our scheme utilizes a novel deduplication protocol based on the double-server storage model to achieve efficient space-saving while protecting data users from losing data under a single point of failure and duplicate-faking attack. Besides, it sharply reduces the computation and storage costs of metadata by introducing a lightweight authenticator generation algorithm and update protocol. On this basis, our scheme further adopts a blockchain-based two-way shared auditing mechanism to achieve decentralized public auditing without the third-party auditor, in which the audit authenticators and results of outsourced data are shared among its users to avoid repetitive audit tasks. Security and performance analysis indicates the practicability of our scheme. Guohua Tian, Yunhan Hu, Jianghong Wei, Zheli Liu, Xinyi Huang 0001, Xiaofeng Chen 0001, Willy Susilo

Secure Partial Aggregation: Making Federated Learning More Robust for Industry 4.0 ApplicationsabstractBig data, due to its promotion for industrial intelligence, has become the cornerstone of the Industry 4.0 era.Federated learning, proposed by Google, can effectively integrate data from different devices and different domains to train models under the premise of privacy preservation. Unfortunately, this new training paradigm faces security risks both on the client side and server side. This article proposes a new federated learning scheme to defend from client-side malicious uploads (e.g., backdoor attacks). In addition, we use cryptography techniques to prevent server-side privacy attacks (e.g., membership inference). Thesecure partial aggregationprotocol we designed improves the privacy and robustness of federated learning. The experiments show that models can achieve high accuracy of over 90% with a proper upload proportion, while the accuracy of the backdoor attack decreased from 99.5% to 0% with the best result. Meanwhile, we prove that our protocol can disable privacy attacks. Jiqiang Gao, Baolei Zhang, Xiaojie Guo 0004, Thar Baker, Min Li 0045, Zheli Liu

Mitigating the Backdoor Attack by Federated Filters for Industrial IoT ApplicationsabstractThe federated learning provides an effective solution to train collaborative models over a large scale of participated Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications with the help of a global server, building an intelligent life. However, the federated learning is vulnerable to the backdoor attack from strong malicious participants. The backdoor attack is inconspicuous and may result in devastating consequences. To resist the attack on IIoT applications, we propose the federated backdoor filter defense that can identify backdoor inputs and restore the data to availability by theblur-label-flippingstrategy. We build multiple filters with eXplainable AI models on the server and send them to clients randomly, preventing advanced attackers from evading the defense. Our backdoor filters show significant backdoor recognition with the accuracy up to 99%. After the implementation of the blur-label-flipping strategy, victim's local model on suspicious backdoor samples can achieve the accuracy up to 88%. | 2022 | Differentially Private Byzantine-Robust Federated LearningabstractFederated learning is a collaborative machine learning framework where a global model is trained by different organizations under the privacy restrictions. Promising as it is, privacy and robustness issues emerge when an adversary attempts to infer the private information from the exchanged parameters or compromise the global model. Various protocols have been proposed to counter the security risks, however, it becomes challenging when one wants to make federated learning protocols robust against Byzantine adversaries while preserving the privacy of the individual participant. In this article, we propose a differentially private Byzantine-robust federated learning scheme (DPBFL) with high computation and communication efficiency. The proposed scheme is effective in preventing adversarial attacks launched by the Byzantine participants and achieves differential privacy through a novel aggregation protocol in the shuffle model. The theoretical analysis indicates that the proposed scheme converges to the approximate optimal solution with the learning error dependent on the differential privacy budget and the number of Byzantine participants. Experimental results on MNIST, FashionMNIST and CIFAR10 demonstrate that the proposed scheme is effective and efficient. Xiaoqian Sun, Yuduo Wu, Zheli Liu, Xiaofeng Chen 0001, Changyu Dong

Frequency-Hiding Order-Preserving Encryption with Small Client StorageabstractThe range query on encrypted databases is usually implemented using the order-preserving encryption (OPE) technique which preserves the order of plaintexts. Since the frequency leakage of plaintexts makes OPE vulnerable to frequency-analyzing attacks, some frequency-hiding order-preserving encryption (FH-OPE) schemes are proposed. However, existing FH-OPE schemes require either the large client storage of size O ( n ) or O (log n ) rounds of interactions for each query, where n is the total number of plaintexts. To this end, we propose a FH-OPE scheme that achieves the small client storage without additional client-server interactions. In detail, our scheme achieves O ( N ) client storage and 1 interaction per query, where N is the number of distinct plaintexts and N ≤ n . Especially, our scheme has a remarkable performance when N ≪ n . Moreover, we design a new coding tree for producing the order-preserving encoding which indicates the order of each ciphertext in the database. The coding strategy of our coding tree ensures that encodings update in the low frequency when inserting new ciphertexts. Experimental results show that the single round interaction and low-frequency encoding updates make our scheme more efficient than previous FH-OPE schemes. | 2021 | Searchable Symmetric Encryption with Forward Search PrivacyabstractSearchable symmetric encryption (SSE) has been widely applied in the encrypted database for queries in practice. Although SSE is powerful and feature-rich, it is always plagued by information leaks. Some recent attacks point out that forward privacy which disallows leakage from update operations, now becomes a basic requirement for any newly designed SSE schemes. However, the subsequent search operations can still leak a significant amount of information. To further strengthen security, we extend the definition of forward privacy and propose the notion of “forward search privacy”. Intuitively, it requires search operations over newly added documents do not leak any information about past queries. The enhanced security notion poses new challenges to the design of SSE. We address the challenges by developing the hidden pointer technique (HPT) and propose a new SSE scheme called Khons, which satisfies our security notion (with the original forward privacy notion) and is also efficient. We implemented Khons and our experiment results on large dataset (wikipedia) show that it is more efficient than existing SSE schemes with forward privacy. | 2021 | NPMML: A Framework for Non-Interactive Privacy-Preserving Multi-Party Machine LearningabstractIn the recent decade, deep learning techniques have been widely adopted for founding artificial Intelligent applications, which led to successes in many data analysis tasks, such as risk assessment, medical predictions, and face recognition. Since the effectiveness of deep learning is directly proportional to the amount of data available, a large-scale collection of massive data is essential. Considering privacy and security concerns often prevent data owners from contributing sensitive data for training, researchers proposed several techniques to provide privacy guarantees of data in machine learning systems that contains multiple parties. However, all these works incurred frequent interactions between data owners during training, such that they came at a high communicational cost for data owners. To this end, in this article, we propose a new server-aid framework called non-interactive privacy-preserving multi-party machine learning (NPMML), which supports secure machine learning tasks without the participation of data owners. The NPMML framework significantly reduces data owners’ communicational overheads in multi-party machine learning. Moreover, we design a concrete construction for multi-layer neural networks based on NPMML. Finally, we evaluate the performance of NPMML by prototype implementation. The experimental result demonstrates that NPMML is communicational-efficient for data owners. Tong Li 0011, Jin Li 0002, Xiaofeng Chen 0001, Zheli Liu, Wenjing Lou, Y. Thomas Hou 0001

VeriFL: Communication-Efficient and Fast Verifiable Aggregation for Federated LearningabstractFederated learning (FL) enables a large number of clients to collaboratively train a global model through sharing their gradients in each synchronized epoch of local training. However, a centralized server used to aggregate these gradients can be compromised and forge the result in order to violate privacy or launch other attacks, which incurs the need to verify the integrity of aggregation. In this work, we explore how to design communication-efficient and fast verifiable aggregation in FL. We propose VeriFL, a verifiable aggregation protocol, with O(N) (dimension-independent) communication and O(N+ d) computation for verification in each epoch, where N is the number of clients and d is the dimension of gradient vectors. Since d can be large in some real-world FL applications (e.g., 100K), our dimension-independent communication is especially desirable for clients with limited bandwidth and high-dimensional gradients. In addition, the proposed protocol can be used in the FL setting where secure aggregation is needed or there is a subset of clients dropping out of protocol execution. Experimental results indicate that our protocol is efficient in these settings. Xiaojie Guo 0004, Zheli Liu, Jin Li 0002, Jiqiang Gao, Boyu Hou, Changyu Dong, Thar Baker

Reinforcement Learning Based Advertising Strategy Using Crowdsensing Vehicular DataabstractAs an effective tool, roadside digital billboard advertising is widely used to attract potential customers (e.g., drivers and passengers passing by the billboards) to obtain commercial profit for the advertiser, i.e., the attracted customers' payment. The commercial profit depends on the number of attracted customers, hence the advertiser needs to adopt an effective advertising strategy to determine the advertisement switching policy for each digital billboard to attract as many potential customers as possible. Whether a customer could be attracted is influenced by numerous factors, such as the probability that the customer could see the billboard and the degree of his/her interests in the advertisement. Besides, cooperation and competition among all digital billboards will also affect the commercial profit. Taking the above factors into consideration, we formulate the dynamic advertising problem to maximize the commercial profit for the advertiser. To address the problem, we first extract potential customers' implicit information by using the vehicular data collected by Mobile CrowdSensing (MCS), such as their vehicular trajectories and their preferences. With this information, we then propose an advertising strategy based on multi-agent deep reinforcement learning. By using the proposed advertising strategy, the advertiser could determine the advertising policy for each digital billboard and maximize the commercial profit. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets have been conducted to verify that our proposed advertising strategy could achieve the superior commercial profit compared with the state-of-the-art strategies. | 2021 | Oblivious Transfer for Privacy-Preserving in VANET's Feature MatchingabstractIn the feature matching of some Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) technologies, users' privacy disclosure issue has seriously threatened personal safety and caused considerable economic loss. In this paper, we proposed Oblivious Transfer (OT) protocol and Private Set Intersection (PSI) protocol to protect the users' privacy in the situation of VANET's feature matching. In our schema, an efficient k-out-of- n OT protocol is constructed. Then, this OT protocol is adopted to give a PSI protocol with equality test. Based on the PSI protocol, the two parties of VANET can obtain the intersection of their characteristic sets and any information outside such intersection is unavailable. Accordingly, internal attacker fails to get any useful information from the two parties in the feature matching, and the two parties cannot obtain extra data of each other. Moreover, to reduce the computational cost of the OT protocol, the non-communicative algebraic structure-group ring Zq[Sm] is employed. | 2020 | ADA: Adaptive Deep Log Anomaly DetectorabstractLarge private and government networks are often subjected to attacks like data extrusion and service disruption. Existing anomaly detection systems use offline supervised learning and employ experts for labeling. Hence they cannot detect anomalies in real-time. Even though unsupervised algorithms are increasingly used nowadays, they cannot readily adapt to newer threats. Moreover, many such systems also suffer from high cost of storage and require extensive computational resources. In this paper, we propose ADA: Adaptive Deep Log Anomaly Detector, an unsupervised online deep neural network framework that leverages LSTM networks and regularly adapts to newer log patterns to ensure accurate anomaly detection. In ADA, an adaptive model selection strategy is designed to choose pareto-optimal configurations and thereby utilize resources efficiently. Further, a dynamic threshold algorithm is proposed to dictate the optimal threshold based on recently detected events to improve the detection accuracy. We also use the predictions to guide storage of abnormal data and effectively reduce the overall storage cost. We compare ADA with state-of-the-art approaches through leveraging the Los Alamos National Laboratory cyber security dataset and show that ADA accurately detects anomalies with high F1-score ~95% and it is 97 times faster than existing approaches and incurs very low storage cost. | 2020 | An activity theory model for dynamic evolution of attack graph based on improved least square genetic algorithmabstractMost of the risk assessments of the attack graph are static and have a fixed assessment scenario, which limit the real-time nature of the situation assessment. This paper presents an activity theory model to analyse the contradictions in the attack behaviour. In order to assess the maximum probability path of an attacker and dynamically remain in control for the overall situation, a definition of attacker's benefit (loss/gain) value calculated by contradictory vector is proposed. The attacker's budget is applied as an unbiased amount in the least square genetic algorithm, optimises the fitness function of the genetic algorithm. Experimental results reveal that the improved least square genetic algorithm with unbiased estimator effectuate higher gains owing to the high fit degree of fitness function. With the coming evidence, the maximum probability attack paths get a more accurate and dynamic risk assessment of the situation. Chundong Wang 0002, Zheli Liu

NewMCOS: Towards a Practical Multi-Cloud Oblivious Storage SchemeabstractEncryption alone is not enough to protect data privacy, because access pattern leaks some sensitive information. Oblivious RAM (ORAM), the solution to this problem, is still far from practical deployment for heavy storage and communication/computation overhead. To reduce them, an insightful idea was proposed to utilize non-colluding clouds to shift client computation and client-cloud communication to the clouds. The proposed multi-cloud ORAM achieved O(1) client-cloud bandwidth cost and removed most of client computation. In this paper, we exploit “disconnected ORAMoperation” and design “two-layerencryption” to further reduce these overheads. Experiments show that our proposed scheme, NewMCOS, significantly reduces evict cache size from GB/MB to KB level with about 2-3 times lower response time and 20 percent savings in bandwidth for clouds, compared to other schemes. Theoretically speaking, we reduce evict cache size from O(√N) to O(ZK), where N is the number of real data blocks, K is the number of clouds (2 <; K <; <; √N ), and Z is the number of real blocks uploaded from the client for eviction. By employing “lazy eviction operation”, the write frequency is reduced by O(Z), the shuffling bandwidth cost is reduced by Ω(Z log Z). Meanwhile, NewMCOS is proved to be secure. | 2020 | ThinORAM: Towards Practical Oblivious Data Access in Fog Computing EnvironmentabstractOblivious RAM (ORAM) is important for applications that require hiding of access patterns. However, most of existing implementations of ORAM are very expensive, which are infeasible to be deployed in lightweight devices, like the terminal equipment for Internet of Things (IoT). Our proposed scheme removes complicated computations in the client side and requires only O(1) communication cost with a reasonable response time. We further show how to securely deploy ThinORAM in the fog computing environment to achieve oblivious data access with minimum client cost. There are only two parties that are involved in this framework, including the content owner and the recipient. The content owner encrypts the original image with a key set which is composed by a selection method according to the additional message. Thus, the image can be encrypted and embedded at the same time. Additional message can be extracted given that the recipient side could perform decryption strategy by exploiting spatial correlation; then, original image can be recovered without any loss. Compare with other current information hiding mechanism, the proposed approach provides higher embedding capacity and is also able to perfectly reconstruct the original image as well as the embedded message. Rate distortion of the proposed method outperforms the previously published ones. Zhi Wang 0014, Zheli Liu, Min Li 0045

Secure Deduplication System with Active Key Update and Its Application in IoTabstractThe rich cloud services in the Internet of Things create certain needs for edge computing, in which devices should be able to handle storage tasks securely, reliably, and efficiently. When processing the storage requests from edge devices, each cloud server is supposed to eliminate duplicate copies of repeating data to reduce the amount of storage space and save on bandwidth. To protect data confidentiality while supporting deduplication, some convergent-encryption-based techniques have been proposed to encrypt the data before uploading. However, all these works cannot meet two requirements while preventing brute-force attacks: (i) power-constrained edge nodes should update encryption keys efficiently when an edge node is abandoned; and (ii) the access privacy of edge nodes should be guaranteed. In this article, we propose a novel encryption scheme for secure chunk-level deduplication. Based on this scheme, we present two constructions of the secure deduplication system that support an efficient key update protocol. The key update protocol does not involve any edge node in computational tasks, so that the deduplication system can adopt an active key update strategy. Moreover, one of our constructions, which is called advance construction, can provide access privacy assurances for edge nodes. The security analysis is given in terms of the proposed threat model. The experimental analysis demonstrates that the proposed deduplication system is practical. Jin Li 0002, Tong Li 0011, Zheli Liu, Xiaofeng Chen 0001

GMM and CNN Hybrid Method for Short Utterance Speaker RecognitionabstractDuring the last few years, the speaker recognition technique has been widely attractive for its extensive application in many fields, such as speech communications, domestics services, and smart terminals. As a critical method, the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) makes it possible to achieve the recognition capability that is close to the hearing ability of human in a long speech. However, the GMM is failing to recognize a short utterance speaker with a high accuracy. Aiming at solving this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel model to enhance the recognition accuracy of the short utterance speaker recognition system. Different from traditional models based on the GMM, we design a method to train a convolutional neural network to process spectrograms, which can describe speakers better. Thus, the recognition system gains the considerable accuracy as well as the reasonable convergence speed. The experiment results show that our model can help to decrease the equal error rate of the recognition from 4.9% to 2.5%. Zheli Liu, Zhendong Wu, Tong Li 0011, Jin Li 0002, Chao Shen 0001

Key-Aggregate Searchable Encryption (KASE) for Group Data Sharing via Cloud StorageabstractThe capability of selectively sharing encrypted data with different users via public cloud storage may greatly ease security concerns over inadvertent data leaks in the cloud. A key challenge to designing such encryption schemes lies in the efficient management of encryption keys. The desired flexibility of sharing any group of selected documents with any group of users demands different encryption keys to be used for different documents. However, this also implies the necessity of securely distributing to users a large number of keys for both encryption and search, and those users will have to securely store the received keys, and submit an equally large number of keyword trapdoors to the cloud in order to perform search over the shared data. The implied need for secure communication, storage, and complexity clearly renders the approach impractical. In this paper, we address this practical problem, which is largely neglected in the literature, by proposing the novel concept of key-aggregate searchable encryption and instantiating the concept through a concrete KASE scheme, in which a data owner only needs to distribute a single key to a user for sharing a large number of documents, and the user only needs to submit a single trapdoor to the cloud for querying the shared documents. The security analysis and performance evaluation both confirm that our proposed schemes are provably secure and practically efficient. Baojiang Cui, Zheli Liu, Lingyu Wang 0001

| 2014 | Enabling efficient and secure data sharing in cloud computingabstractSUMMARY With the rapid development of cloud computing, more and more data are being centralized into remote cloud server for sharing, which raises a challenge on how to keep them both private and accessible. Although searchable encryption provides an efficient solution to support keyword‐based search directly on encrypted data, considering its application in file sharing, existing work depends on key sharing among authorized users, which inevitably causes the risks of key exposure and abuse. In this paper, aiming at enabling efficient and secure data sharing in cloud computing, we provide a generic construction for this purpose. The proposed construction is full‐featured: (i) It enables authorized users to perform keyword‐based search directly on encrypted data without sharing the unique secret key; and (ii) it provides two‐layered access control to limit unauthorized user's access to the shared data. On the basis of the proposed generic construction, we utilize the existing techniques on identity‐based broadcast encryption and public key searchable encryption to instantiate a concrete construction. | 2013 | Cycle-walking revisited: consistency, security, and efficiencyabstractABSTRACT Cycle‐walking is a method that makes sure ciphertext falls in the acceptable range through encrypting plaintext repeatedly with some underlying cipher. This technology provides a general way to construct cryptographic schemes for various interesting applications, including enhancing existing system security without the change of original structure, encrypting multimedia data with the preservation of scalability, generating credit card numbers for Web transaction, and so on, which have a common feature that ciphertext is required to satisfy certain restrictions in order to allow some operations directly imposed on encrypted data. Nevertheless, as far as we know, there exists little work making rigorous analysis on cycle‐walking, especially its undeterministic efficiency, which may limit the application of schemes constructed by such technology or even lead it to unpracticality. In this paper, aiming at filling some gaps about cycle‐walking and helping cryptographic theory “catch up” with its application, we present the rigorous analysis on cycle‐walking's properties including consistency, security, and efficiency. On consistency, we show that cycle‐walking will necessarily arrive back with finite iteration rounds and its decryption reverses encryption. On security, we show that cycle‐walking would not degrade the security of underlying ciphers. On efficiency, instead of using “nondeterministic” to describe cycle‐walking's performance in previous work, we make precise analysis and provide the answer to “how long is the duration of cycle‐walking's encrypting process.” Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
