2014 Compressive Sensing of Sparse Tensors
abstract
Compressive sensing (CS) has triggered an enormous research activity since its first appearance. CS exploits the signal's sparsity or compressibility in a particular domain and integrates data compression and acquisition, thus allowing exact reconstruction through relatively few nonadaptive linear measurements. While conventional CS theory relies on data representation in the form of vectors, many data types in various applications, such as color imaging, video sequences, and multisensor networks, are intrinsically represented by higher order tensors. Application of CS to higher order data representation is typically performed by conversion of the data to very long vectors that must be measured using very large sampling matrices, thus imposing a huge computational and memory burden. In this paper, we propose generalized tensor compressive sensing (GTCS)-a unified framework for CS of higher order tensors, which preserves the intrinsic structure of tensor data with reduced computational complexity at reconstruction. GTCS offers an efficient means for representation of multidimensional data by providing simultaneous acquisition and compression from all tensor modes. In addition, we propound two reconstruction procedures, a serial method and a parallelizable method. We then compare the performance of the proposed method with Kronecker compressive sensing (KCS) and multiway compressive sensing (MWCS). We demonstrate experimentally that GTCS outperforms KCS and MWCS in terms of both reconstruction accuracy (within a range of compression ratios) and processing speed. The major disadvantage of our methods (and of MWCS as well) is that the compression ratios may be worse than that offered by KCS.

2013 The Minimum Entropy Output of a Quantum Channel Is Locally Additive
abstract
We show that the minimum von Neumann entropy output of a quantum channel is locally additive. Hastings' counterexample for the additivity conjecture makes this result quite surprising. In particular, it indicates that the nonadditivity of the minimum entropy output is a global effect of quantum channels.

2011 Spectrum Management in Multiuser Cognitive Wireless Networks: Optimality and Algorithm
abstract
Spectrum management is used to improve performance in multiuser communication system, e.g., cognitive radio or femtocell networks, where multiuser interference can lead to data rate degradation. We study the nonconvex NP-hard problem of maximizing a weighted sum rate in a multiuser Gaussian interference channel by power control subject to affine power constraints. By exploiting the fact that this problem can be restated as an optimization problem with constraints that are spectral radii of specially crafted nonnegative matrices, we derive necessary and sufficient optimality conditions and propose a global optimization algorithm based on the outer approximation method. Central to our techniques is the use of nonnegative matrix theory, e.g., nonnegative matrix inequalities and the Perron-Frobenius theorem. We also study an inner approximation method and a relaxation method that give insights to special cases. Our techniques and algorithm can be extended to a multiple carrier system model, e.g., OFDM system or receivers with interference suppression capability.

2010 The 1-vertex transfer matrix and accurate estimation of channel capacity
abstract
The notion of a 1-vertex transfer matrix for multidimensional codes is introduced. It is shown that the capacity of such codes, or the topological entropy, can be expressed as the limit of the logarithm of spectral radii of 1-vertex transfer matrices. Storage and computations using the 1-vertex transfer matrix are much smaller than storage and computations needed for the standard transfer matrix. The method is applied to estimate the first 15 digits of the entropy of the 2-D(0, 1)run length limited channel. A large-scale computation of eigenvalues for the(0, 1)run length limited channel in 2-D and 3-D have been carried out. This was done in order to be able to compare the computational cost of the new method with the standard transfer matrix and have rigorous bounds to compare the estimates with. This in turn leads to improvements on the best previous lower and upper bounds for these channels.

2007 Towards generic theory of data compression
abstract
In this paper, we consider an extension and rigorous justification of Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) which is an optimal technique for data compression. We propose and study the generic KLT which is treated as the best weighted linear estimator of a given rank under the condition that the associated covariance matrix is singular. As a result, the generic KLT is constructed in terms of the pseudo-inverse matrices that imply a development of the special technique. In particular, we give a solution of the new low-rank matrix approximation problem that provides a basis for the generic KLT. Theoretical aspects of the generic KLT are carefully studied.

2006 An Algorithm for Missing Value Estimation for DNA Microarray Data
abstract
Gene expression data matrices often contain missing expression values. In this paper, we describe a new algorithm, named improved fixed rank approximation algorithm (IFRAA), for missing values estimations of the large gene expression data matrices. We compare the present algorithm with the two existing and widely used methods for reconstructing missing entries for DNA microarray gene expression data: the Bayesian principal component analysis (BPCA) and the local least squares imputation method (LLS). The three algorithms were applied to four microarray data sets and two synthetic low-rank data matrices. Certain percentages of the elements of these data sets were randomly deleted, and the three algorithms were used to recover them. In conclusion IFRAA appears to be the most reliable and accurate approach for recovering missing DNA microarray gene expression data, or any other noisy data matrices that are effectively low rank

2004 Explicit construction of families of LDPC codes with no 4-cycles
abstract
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are serious contenders to turbo codes in terms of decoding performance. One of the main problems is to give an explicit construction of such codes whose Tanner graphs have known girth. For a prime power q and m/spl ges/2, Lazebnik and Ustimenko construct a q-regular bipartite graph D(m,q) on 2q/sup m/ vertices, which has girth at least 2/spl lceil/m/2/spl rceil/+4. We regard these graphs as Tanner graphs of binary codes LU(m,q). We can determine the dimension and minimum weight of LU(2,q), and show that the weight of its minimum stopping set is at least q+2 for q odd and exactly q+2 for q even. We know that D(2,q) has girth 6 and diameter 4, whereas D(3,q) has girth 8 and diameter 6. We prove that for an odd prime p, LU(3,p) is a [p/sup 3/,k] code with k/spl ges/(p/sup 3/-2p/sup 2/+3p-2)/2. We show that the minimum weight and the weight of the minimum stopping set of LU(3,q) are at least 2q and they are exactly 2q for many LU(3,q) codes. We find some interesting LDPC codes by our partial row construction. We also give simulation results for some of our codes.
