| 2026 | RatioSketch: Towards More Accurate Frequency Estimation in Data Streams via a Lightweight Neural NetworkabstractSketch-based solutions are widely used to estimate item frequencies in infinite data streams.Traditional hand-crafted sketches face the bottleneck of further eliminating errors because they cannot fully utilize the data stream distribution.Although recent neural sketches represented by MetaSketch and LegoSketch have improved generalization capabilities, they face bottlenecks such as high computational overhead and parameter sensitivity.Meanwhile, they ignore load information, fail to fully utilize the local information in hand-crafted sketches, and do not focus on the frequent items that are usually more important in data streams. In this paper, we propose RatioSketch, a novel lightweight neural network correction framework that synergizes the advantages of hand-crafted sketches and neural sketches in a ``micro-correction'' paradigm. The key idea is to retain the efficient underlying data structure of the hand-crafted sketch and to build a neural correction layer in its output space. We select multiple representative hand-crafted sketches as use cases to study the correction performance of RatioSketch on them.Extensive experimental evaluations on several real-world datasets show that RatioSketch-corrected sketches achieve consistently higher estimation accuracy than their uncorrected counterparts, as well as outperforming neural baselines such as MetaSketch and LegoSketch under identical memory budgets. | 2026 | PBSketch: Finding Periodic Burst Items in Data StreamsabstractDetecting periodic burst (PB) items in data streams is crucial for applications like rate limiting but remains unexplored. % While combining existing sketch algorithms offers a baseline, it suffers from significant inaccuracy and inefficiency. In this paper, we propose PBSketch, the first dedicated sketch algorithm designed for detecting PB items in real time. Its key techniques mainly include: 1) a two-stage hierarchical structure that efficiently maintains potential burst items and discards those without potential; 2) a fine-grained PB selection mechanism during window processing, coupled with the Window Smoothing Processing optimization to amortize performance overhead and eliminate processing spikes. % We provide its error bounds through rigorous theoretical analysis. Our extensive experiments show that PBSketch outperforms the baseline solution in accuracy and speed. By deploying it on an FPGA platform, the throughput is further significantly improved. Moreover, it effectively optimizes a practical application of rate limiting, clearly improving performance with almost negligible overhead. | 2026 | Gryphon: Scaling Hyperscale Multi-Tenant Gateways Beyond the Petabit-Era via DPU-Augmented Hierarchical Co-OffloadingabstractAt ByteDance, cloud gateway clusters orchestrate petabit-scale aggregate traffic. Traditional ASIC-only gateways fail to meet these escalating demands due to severe on-chip resource constraints and limited programmable flexibility, while pure software solutions or alternatives like disaggregated SmartNICs struggle to match terabit-scale line-rate throughput. To bridge this gap, we present Gryphon, a hyperscale cloud gateway built on a hybrid architecture that integrates DPUs directly into the switching ASIC's forwarding path. This design resolves the fundamental tension between capacity and speed, expanding table scale by up to 1000× and augmenting programmability, while sustaining 1.6 Tbps line-rate throughput at a cost of only ~8 μs in additional average latency. To manage this hardware heterogeneity, we introduce Hierarchical Co-Offloading (HLCO) in the data plane, achieving >99.9% fast path hit rate, while retaining software fallback for complex operations. In the control plane, we develop an abstraction layer (P4Bridge) that decouples hardware specifics from policy configuration. Gryphon has been operating at production scale for over a year, deployed on hundreds of nodes across multiple Availability Zones. We also share production measurements and operational experiences that serve as the first hyperscale-proven guidelines for next-generation DPU-augmented cloud gateways. | 2026 | DP4C: A SoC Architecture for NN-Driven Network Functions With the Intelligent PlaneabstractNeural-network-driven (NN-driven) network functions and their implementation on the data plane are emerging topics due to demonstrated accuracy and high performance. Meanwhile, we argue that deploying NN-driven network functions should satisfy two design goals: the generality to support various NN models, and the flexibility to operate various network functions. Unfortunately, existing work cannot satisfy both goals simultaneously. In this paper, we introduce the concept of the Intelligent Plane for NN-driven network functions, and propose DP4C, a cross-plane SoC architecture that integrates the intelligent, control, and data planes within a single chip. DP4C comprises the programmable NN inference engine that iteratively executes inference to ensure model generality in the intelligent plane, a multi-core RISC-V CPU that parses inference results into diverse network functions through its architectural flexibility in the control plane, and the switch fabric in the data plane. To further eliminate the performance bottleneck, we propose (i) the direct register access mechanism coupled with custom instructions to reduce the overhead of cross-plane data migration; and (ii) the multi-core pipelining with adaptive batch-processing for multi-core CPU. DP4C SoC is fabricated using 130 nm technology and has already been deployed in industrial IoT environments. We also design three distinct test cases to evaluate DP4C, fully demonstrating the model generality and operational flexibility. | 2025 | CuckooGraph: A Scalable and Space-Time Efficient Data Structure for Large-Scale Dynamic GraphsabstractGraphs play an increasingly important role in various big data applications. However, existing graph data structures cannot simultaneously address the performance bottlenecks caused by the dynamic updates, large scale, and high query complexity of current graphs. This paper proposes a novel data structure for large-scale dynamic graphs called CuckooGraph. It does not require any prior knowledge of the upcoming graphs, and can adaptively resize to the most memory-efficient form while requiring few memory accesses for very fast graph data processing. The key techniques of CuckooGraph include TRANSFORMATION and DENYLIST. TRANSFORMATION fully utilizes the limited memory by designing related data structures that allow flexible space transformations to smoothly expand/tighten the required space depending on the number of incoming items. DENYLIST efficiently handles item insertion failures and further improves processing speed. Our experimental results show that compared with the most competitive solution Spruce, Cuckoo-Graph achieves about 33× higher insertion throughput while requiring only about 68% of the memory space. | 2025 | Extendible RDMA-Based Remote Memory KV Store with Dynamic Perfect Hashing IndexabstractPerfect hashing is a special hashing function that maps each item to a unique location without collision, which enables the creation of a KV store with small and constant lookup time. Recent dynamic perfect hashing attains high load factor by increasing associativity, which impacts bandwidth and throughput. This paper proposes a novel dynamic perfect hashing index without sacrificing associativity, and uses it to devise an RDMA-based remote memory KV store called CuckooDuo. CuckooDuo simultaneously achieves high load factor, fast speed, minimal bandwidth, and efficient expansion without item movement. We theoretically analyze the properties of CuckooDuo, and implement it in an RDMA-network based testbed. The results show CuckooDuo achieves 1.9~17.6x smaller insertion latency and 9.0~18.5x smaller insertion bandwidth than prior works. | 2025 | UniTE: Decoupling Traffic Engineering from Network Topologies with Unifying FrameworkabstractWith the rapid development of networks, optimizing network utilization has become a crucial task. Consequently, previous research has extensively investigated Traffic Engineering (TE). However, these studies deeply couple TE systems with specific network topologies, resulting in a lack of generalization ability to different network topologies. Therefore, a trained model cannot be deployed to other topologies, causing additional training overhead for network operators. Moreover, these systems struggle to cope with changes in network topology caused by business expansion or network failures. Thus traditional TE systems can bring performance degradation under those scenarios. In this paper, we propose UniTE, a universal TE system. We leverage Graph Attention Network (GAT) and mask matrices to empower the model with the capability to manage traffic in diverse network topologies. To avoid the occurrence of loops along routing paths, we introduce Double Directed Acyclic Graphs (DDAG) to restrict the forwarding nodes for data packets. We train UniTE on various topologies and evaluate its performance. Finally, we assess UniTE's performance under network topology changes induced by network failures, and our method can outperform up to 15.6%. Zeyu Luan, Zhuochen Fan, Qing Li 0006, Yong Jiang 0001 |

| 2025 | WisePIFinder: Efficient and Accurate Detection of Persistent and Infrequent FlowsabstractIn large-scale data stream analytics, accurate identification of Persistent and Infrequent (PI) flows is of great significance for monitoring and protecting against network attacks such as Advanced Persistent Threats (APT). However, existing research focuses mainly on detecting frequent flows or persistent flows, with insufficient studies on the characterization and detection methods for PI flows. Based on the analysis of sufficient APT flows, we propose a method that combines global and local features to effectively characterize PI flows. Further, we propose a novel sketch algorithm called WisePIFinder, which aims to detect PI flows more accurately and efficiently in realtime. The key idea is to continuously filter out non-PI flows while detecting flow persistence, to achieve accurate statistics on PI flows. Experimental results show that WisePIFinder improves the F1 Score by at least 20 % and insertion throughput by at least 60 % compared to the state-of-the-art solution for detecting PI flows. | 2025 | Per-Flow Quantile Estimation Using M4 FrameworkabstractThis paper introduces a novel framework, M4, designed to estimate per-flow quantiles in data streams accurately. M4 is a versatile framework that can be integrated with a wide array of single-flow quantile estimation algorithms, thereby enabling them to perform per-flow estimation. The framework employs a sketch-based approach to provide a space-efficient method for recording and extracting distribution information. M4 incorporates two techniques:MINIMUMandSUM. TheMINIMUMtechnique minimizes the noise on a flow from other flows caused by hash collisions, while theSUMtechnique efficiently categorizes flows based on their sizes and customizes treatment strategies accordingly. We demonstrate the application of M4 on three single-flow quantile estimation algorithms (DDSketch,$t$-digest, and ReqSketch), detailing the specific implementation of theMINIMUMandSUMtechniques. We provide theoretical proof that M4 delivers high accuracy while utilizing limited memory. Additionally, we conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the performance of M4 regarding accuracy and speed. The experimental results indicate that across all three example algorithms, M4 significantly outperforms two comparison frameworks in terms of accuracy for per-flow quantile estimation while maintaining comparable speed. | 2025 | SandwichSketch: A More Accurate Sketch for Frequent Object Mining in Data StreamsabstractFrequent object mining has gained considerable interest in the research community and can be split into frequent item mining and frequent set mining depending on the type of object. While existing sketch-based algorithms have made significant progress in addressing these two tasks concurrently, they also possess notable limitations. They either support only software platforms with low throughput or compromise accuracy for faster processing speed and better hardware compatibility. In this paper, we make a substantial stride towards supporting frequent object mining by designing SandwichSketch, which draws inspiration from sandwich making and proposes two techniques including the double fidelity enhancement and hierarchical hot locking to guarantee high fidelity on both two tasks. We implement SandwichSketch on three platforms (CPU, Redis, and FPGA) and show that it enhances accuracy by$38.4\times$and$5\times$for two tasks on three real-world datasets, respectively. Additionally, it supports a distributed measurement scenario with less than a 0.01% decrease in Average Relative Error (ARE) when the number of nodes increases from 1 to 16. | 2024 | VisionEmbedder: Bit-Level-Compact Key-Value Storage with Constant Lookup, Rapid Updates, and Rare FailureabstractIn key-value storage scenarios where storage space is at a premium, our focus is on a class of solutions that only store the value, which is highly space-efficient. While these solutions have proven their worth in distributed storage, networking, and bioinformatics, they still face two significant issues: one is that their space cost could be further reduced; the other is their are vulnerable to update failures, which can necessitate a complete table reconstruction. To address these issues, we introduce VisionEmbedder, a compact key-value embedder with constant-time lookup, fast dynamic updates, and a near-zero risk of reconstruction. VisionEmbedder cuts down the storage requirement from 2.2L bits to just 1.6L bits per key-value pair with an L-bit value, and it significantly reduces the chance of update failures by a factor of n, where$n$is the number of keys (for instance, 1 million or more). The compromise with VisionEmbedder comes with a minor reduction in query throughput on certain data sizes. The enhancements offered by VisionEmbedder have been theoretically validated and are effective across any dataset. Additionally, we have implemented VisionEmbedder on both FPGA and CPU platforms, with all codes made available as open-source. | 2024 | M4: A Framework for Per-Flow Quantile EstimationabstractThe field of quantile estimation has grown in importance due to its myriad practical applications. Recent research trends have evolved from estimating the quantile for a single data stream to developing data structures that can concurrently estimate quantiles for multiple sub-streams, also known as flows. This paper introduces a novel framework, M4, designed to estimate per-flow quantiles in data streams accurately. M4 is a versatile framework that can be integrated with a wide array of single-flow quantile estimation algorithms, thereby enabling them to perform per-flow estimation. The framework employs a sketch-based approach to provide a space-efficient method for recording and extracting distribution information. M4 incorporates two techniques: MINIMUM and SUM. | 2024 | SteadySketch: A High-Performance Algorithm for Finding Steady Flows in Data StreamsabstractIn this paper, we study steady flows in data streams, which refers to the flows whose arrival rate is always non-zero and around a fixed value for several consecutive time windows. To find steady flows in real time, we propose a novel sketch-based algorithm, SteadySketch, aiming to accurately report steady flows with limited memory. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to define and find steady flows in data streams. The key novelty of SteadySketch is our proposed reborn technique, which reduces the memory requirement by 75%. Our theoretical proofs show that the negative impact of the reborn technique is small. Experimental results show that, compared with the two comparison schemes, SteadySketch improves the Precision Rate (PR) by around 79.5% and 82.8%, and reduces the Average Relative Error (ARE) by around$905.9\times $and$657.9\times $, respectively. Finally, we provide three concrete cases: cache prefetch, Redis and P4 implementation. As we will demonstrate, SteadySketch can effectively improve the cache hit ratio while achieving satisfying performance on both Redis and Tofino switches. | 2024 | BurstBalancer: Do Less, Better Balance for Large-Scale Data Center TrafficabstractLayer-3 load balancing is a key topic in the networking field. It is well acknowledged that flowlet is the most promising solution because of its good trade-off between load balance and packet reordering. However we find its one significant limitation: it makes the forwarding paths of flows unpredictable. To address this limitation this paper presents BurstBalancer a simple yet efficient load balancing system with a sketch named BalanceSketch. Our design philosophy isdoing less changesto keep the forwarding path of most flows fixed which guides the design of BalanceSketch and our balance operations. We have fully implemented BurstBalancer in a small-scale testbed built with Tofino switches and conducted both large-scale event-level (NS-2) and ESL (electronic system level) simulations. Our results show that BurstBalancer achieves 5%$\sim$35% smaller FCT than LetFlow in symmetric topology and up to 30× smaller FCT in asymmetric topology while 58× fewer flows suffer from path changing. Simplex items have frequencies in consecutive p windows that can be approximated by a polynomial of degree at most k, where k = 0, 1, 2. These low-order representable simplex items have a wide range of potential applications. For example, when k = 1, we can leverage these items whose frequency has obvious linear increase or decrease to speed up the running time of a class of machine learning models and detect network attacks such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS), etc. To find k-degree simplex items in real time, we propose a novel sketch, namely X-Sketch, to accurately record simplex items in a compact space. The key idea of X-Sketch is to effectively filter out non-simplex items with less memory overhead, and then monitor the remaining potential simplex items and keep those items with more consecutive windows. We conduct extensive experiments, and the experimental results show that the F1 Score of X-Sketch is on average 68.6%, 57.9%, and 42.2% higher than the baseline solution for k = 0, 1, 2, respectively. Finally, we also provide a case study that applies X-Sketch to "accelerate" the two machine learning models through end-to-end experiments. We have released our source code at GitHub. | 2023 | SteadySketch: Finding Steady Flows in Data StreamsabstractIn this paper, we study steady flows in data streams, which refers to those flows whose arrival rate is always non-zero and around a fixed value for several consecutive time windows. To find steady flows in real time, we propose a novel sketch, SteadySketch, aiming to accurately report steady flows with limited memory. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to define and find steady flows in data streams. The key novelty of SteadySketch is our proposed reborn technique, which reduces the required memory space by 75%. Experimental results show that SteadySketch improves the Precision Rate (PR) by 81.1% and reduces the Average Relative Error (ARE) by 955.3× compared with the strawman solution. Finally, we provide a concrete case: cache prefetch, and prove that SteadySketch can effectively improve the cache hit ratio. | 2023 | OneSketch: A Generic and Accurate Sketch for Data StreamsabstractIn this paper, we propose a generic sketch algorithm capable of achieving more accuracy in the following five tasks: finding top-$k$frequent items, finding heavy hitters, per-item frequency estimation, and heavy changes in the time and spatial dimension. The state-of-the-art (SOTA) sketch solution for multiple measurement tasks is ElasticSketch (ES). However, the accuracy of its frequency estimation has room for improvement. The reason for this is that ES suffers from overestimation errors in the light part, which introduces errors when querying both frequent and infrequent items. To address these problems, we propose a generic sketch, OneSketch, designed to minimize overestimation errors. To achieve the design goal, we propose four key techniques, which embrace hash collisions and minimize possible errors by handling highly recurrent item replacements well. Experimental results show that OneSketch clearly outperforms 12 SOTA schemes. For example, compared with ES, OneSketch achieves more than 10× lower Average Absolute Error on finding top-$k$frequent items and heavy hitters, as well as 48.3% and 38.4% higher F1 Scores on two heavy changes under 200 KB memory, respectively. | 2023 | On the Evolutionary of Bloom Filter False Positives - An Information Theoretical Approach to Optimizing Bloom Filter ParametersabstractThe fundamental issue of how to calculate the false positive probability of widely used Bloom Filters (BF), from which the conventional wisdom is to derive the optimal value of$k$, remains elusive. Since Bloom gave the false positive formula in 1970, in 2008, Boseet al. pointed out that Bloomˆs formula is flawed; and in 2010, Christensenet al. pointed out that Bose's formula is also flawed and gave another formula. Although Christensen's formula is perfectly accurate, it is time-consuming and impossible to calculate the optimal value of$k$. Based on the following observation: for a BF with$m$bits and$n$elements, if and only if its entropy is the largest, its false positive probability is the smallest, we propose the first approach to calculating the optimal$k$without any false positive formula. Furthermore, we propose a new and more accurate upper bound for the false positive probability. When the size of a Bloom Filter becomes infinitely large, our upper bound turns equal to the lower bound, which becomes Bloomˆs formula and deepens our understanding towards it. Besides, we derive the bounds of correct rate of Counting Bloom Filters (CBFs) by applying our proposed formulas about BFs to them. | 2023 | HoppingSketch: More Accurate Temporal Membership Query and Frequency QueryabstractNowadays, research on temporal membership queries is indispensable. Generally, temporal membership queries exist in two modalities: fixed windows and sliding windows, the latter having obvious advantages. The first sketch that implements temporal membership queries is the persistent Bloom filter (PBF). PBF has two shortcomings: it does not support sliding windows nor frequency queries. Here, we propose HoppingSketch to promote the original PBF. It is the first sketch that implements temporal membership queries for sliding windows. HoppingSketch is a general and efficient data stream processing framework, able to implement different tasks thanks to different atomic sketches. When the atomic sketches are Bloom filters and we apply them to PBF, HoppingSketch can achieve significantly higher temporal membership query accuracy than the original PBF. When the atomic sketches are sketches of Count-Min, Conservative Update, and Count, HoppingSketch can achieve more accurate frequency query than by applying PBF on the corresponding sketches. Our experimental results demonstrate the advantages of HoppingSketch compared with the state-of-the-art. Zhuochen Fan, Siyuan Dong, Fangyi Liu, Tong Yang 0003, Steve Uhlig, Bin Cui 0001 |

| 2023 | PISketch: Finding Persistent and Infrequent FlowsabstractFinding persistent and low-active activity periods is very helpful in practice, for example to detect intrusion activities. Most of the literature focuses on finding persistent flows or frequent flows. No previous work is able to find persistent and infrequent flows. In this paper, we propose a novel sketch data structure, PISketch, to find persistent and infrequent flows in real time. The key idea of PISketch is to define a weight and its Reward and Penalty System for each flow to combine and balance the information of both persistency and infrequency, and to keep high-weighted flows in a limited space through a strategy. We implement PISketch on P4, FPGA, and CPU platforms, and compare the performance of PISketch with two strawman solutions (On-Off + CM sketch, and PIE + CM sketch), in terms of finding persistent and infrequent flows. Our experimental results demonstrate the advantage of PISketch, by comparing it to two strawman solutions: 1) The F1 Score of PISketch is around 22.1% and 57.6% higher than two strawman solutions, respectively; 2) The Average Relative Error (ARE) of PISketch is around 820.9 (up to 1188.8) and 126.2 (up to 265.6) times lower than two strawman solutions, respectively; 3) The insertion throughput of PISketch is around 1.23 and 16.5 times higher than two strawman solutions, respectively. Moreover, we implement two concrete cases of PISketch through end-to-end experiments. All of our codes are available at GitHub. | 2022 | PeriodicSketch: Finding Periodic Items in Data StreamsabstractIn this paper, we study periodic items in data streams, which refer to those items arriving with a fixed interval. All existing works involving mining periodic patterns does not fit for data stream scenarios. To find periodic items in real time, we propose a novel sketch, PeriodicSketch, aiming to accurately record top-$K$periodic items. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to find periodic items in data streams. Any interval may occur many times, and we use frequency to denote the number of an interval occurred. To pick out periodic items with high frequency, we propose a key technique called Guaranteed Soft Uniform (GSU) replacement strategy. Our theoretical proofs show that when replacement is successful, it is more likely that the new item has a higher frequency than the current smallest frequency; and GSU can ensure that our items in the sketch will approach the true periodic items closer and closer. And as soon as we get all the periodic items, the state would not change worse with high probability. We conduct extensive experiments, and the experimental results show that the Average Absolute Error (AAE) of our sketch using 1/10 memory is around 737 times (up to 2019 times) lower than the baseline solution. Finally, we provide a concrete case: Cache prefetch, which proves that PeriodicSketch can significantly improve the Cache hit ratio. | 2022 | BurstBalancer: Do Less, Better Balance for Large-scale Data Center TrafficabstractLayer-3 load balancing is a key topic in the networking field. It is well acknowledged that flowlet is the most promising solution because of its good trade-off between load balance and packet reordering. However, we find its one significant limitation: it makes the forwarding paths of flows unpredictable. To address this limitation, this paper presents BurstBalancer, a simple yet efficient load balancing system with a sketch, named BalanceSketch. Our design philosophy is doing less changes to keep the forwarding path of most flows fixed, which guides the design of BalanceSketch and balance operations. We have fully implemented BurstBalancer in a small-scale testbed built with Tofino switches, and conducted large-scale NS-2 simulations. Our results show that BurstBalancer achieves 5%∼35% smaller FCT than LetFlow in symmetric topology and up to 30× smaller FCT in asymmetric topology, while 58× fewer flows suffer from path changing. | 2022 | SHE: A Generic Framework for Data Stream Mining over Sliding Windowsabstract1Data stream mining over a sliding window is a fundamental problem in many applications, such as financial data trackers, intrusion detection and QoS. To meet the demand for high throughput of high speed data streams, sliding window algorithms turn to hardware platforms including FPGA/ASIC and programmable switches. These hardware platforms have three constraints for algorithms running on, which are 1) small memory usage 2) single stage memory access and 3) limited concurrent memory access. Algorithms perfectly fit in with these constraints will enable a highest utilization of these hardware platforms. However, no existing sliding window algorithm is specifically designed for hardware platforms. In this paper, we propose the Sliding Hardware Estimator (SHE), which is a generic framework that extends existing fixed window algorithms to sliding windows on hardware platforms. The key idea of SHE is that, during insertions we approximately delete out-dated information with little time and space overhead, while during queries we design sophisticated techniques to minimize error. We have fully implemented our SHE on FPGA, achieving a throughput of 544 Mips. We apply SHE to four typical data stream mining tasks. Experimental results show that, when compared with the state-of-the-art which cannot be implemented in hardware, SHE reduces the error by up to 100 times in membership queries. | 2022 | Work-in-Progress: A Novel Clock Synchronization System for Large-Scale ClustersabstractClock synchronization is essential in real-time applications of large-scale clusters. State-of-the-art Huygens clock synchronization reduces synchronization errors through offset probing loop correction between data center servers. However, Huygens does not offer a solution for large-scale clusters. In this paper, we propose a novel and scalable CAT-Sync clock synchronization system for large-scale clusters, which includes three key techniques: optimal probe topology Construction, probing channel Assignment, and Time-slice synchronization. In CAT-Sync, the workload of each host is the same and will not increase with the expansion of the cluster size. Our CAT-Sync system achieves a stable clock synchronization accuracy within 2 microseconds on 60 virtual machines, and the average clock offset for the entire synchronization process is improved by about 44.8% compared to Huygens. | 2022 | Beyond Video Surveillance: Exploiting Sleep-Talk of Apps to See Smartphone's IDabstractVideo cameras have been widely deployed at city-scale for security surveillance. However, under poor light condition and limited video resolution, it is often impossible to determine the identity of a pedestrian by using computer vision alone. Motivated by the fast and continuous penetration of smartphones, in this paper, we explore the feasibility of augmenting video cameras to ‘see’ the identities of smartphones (e.g., MAC addresses, cellular IDs, or even phone numbers) carried by pedestrians. We develop IDCam–a system that integrates a video camera with a smart antenna array, which leverages spatial-domain sensing of smartphone’s sleep-talk (i.e., the packets transmitted by apps while the phone’s screen is off) to match the angles of smartphone’s packets and pedestrians in the video, enabling passive identity linking without the cooperation of target. Experiment results show that IDCam accurately links visual and wireless identities in a complex deployment environment with tens of pedestrians and intensive multipath signal propagation.
