2020 Evaluation of Interventional Planning Software Features for MR-guided Transrectal Prostate Biopsies
abstract
This work presents an interventional planning software to be used in conjunction with a robotic manipulator to perform transrectal MR guided prostate biopsies. The interventional software was designed taking in consideration a generic manipulator used under the two modes of operation: side-firing and end-firing of the biopsy needle. Studies were conducted with urologists using the software to plan virtual biopsies. The results show features of software relevant for operating efficiently under the two modes of operation.

2019 Preliminary Evaluation of Robotic Transrectal Biopsy System on an Interventional Planning Software
abstract
Prostate biopsy is considered as a definitive way for diagnosing prostate malignancies. Urologists are currently moving towards MR-guided prostate biopsies over conventional transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsies for prostate cancer detection. Recently, robotic systems have started to emerge as an assistance tool for urologists to perform MR-guided prostate biopsies. However, these robotic assistance systems are designed for a specific clinical environment and cannot be adapted to modifications or changes applied to the clinical setting and/or workflow. This work presents the preliminary design of a cable-driven manipulator developed to be used in both MR scanners and MR-ultrasound fusion systems. The proposed manipulator design and functionality are evaluated on a simulated virtual environment. The simulation is created on an in-house developed interventional planning software to evaluate the ergonomics and usability. The results show that urologists can benefit from the proposed design of the manipulator and planning software to accurately perform biopsies of targeted areas in the prostate.

2018 Medical Telerobotics and the Remote Ultrasonography Paradigm Over 4G Wireless Networks
abstract
Medical telerobotic systems provide a framework for performing interventional and diagnostic procedures remotely utilizing communication networks. Over the past decade, various systems have demonstrated the feasibility and the significance of telerobotics, some of which have been already adopted in clinical practice. In this study, we elaborate on the potential and discuss associated challenges focusing on the enabling technologies, namely robotic manipulation, telecommunications, and vision systems. A case study of an end-to-end mobile teleechography software platform using the MELODY robotic system is presented, investigating the capability of commercially available 4G (and beyond) wireless networks to communicate clinically lossless medical video for remote diagnosis purposes. Performance analysis demonstrates that medical video transmission approaching the clinical standards of in-hospital examination while conforming to strict delay requirements is achievable.

2018 Optimizing the Detection Performance of Smart Camera Networks Through a Probabilistic Image-Based Model
abstract
Networks of smart cameras, equipped with on-board processing and communication infrastructure, are increasingly being deployed in a variety of different application fields, such as security and surveillance, traffic monitoring, industrial monitoring, and critical infrastructure protection. The task(s) that a network of smart cameras executes in these applications, e.g., activity monitoring and object identification, can be severely degraded due to errors in the detection module. However, in most cases, higher level tasks and decision making processes in smart camera networks (SCNs) assume ideal detection capabilities for the cameras, which is often not the case due to the probabilistic nature of the detection process, especially for low-cost cameras with limited capabilities. Realizing that it is necessary to introduce robustness in the decision process, this paper presents results toward uncertainty-aware SCNs. Specifically, we introduce a flexible uncertainty model that can be used to characterize the detection behavior in a camera network. We also show how to utilize the model to formulate detection-aware optimization algorithms that can be used to reconfigure the network in order to improve the overall detection efficiency and thus increase the effective number of detected targets. We evaluate our proposed model and algorithms using a network of Raspberry-Pi-based smart cameras that reconfigure in order to improve the detection performance based on the position of targets in the area. The experimental results in the laboratory as well as in a human monitoring application and extensive simulation results indicate that the proposed solutions are able to improve the robustness and reliability of SCNs.

2012 Development and initial testing of a prototype concentric tube robot for surgical interventions
abstract
The development and initial testing of a prototype concentric tube robot suitable for surgical applications is presented. The system is endowed with 3 degrees-of-freedom and consists of a three concentric tubes assembly and an actuation module. Design issues are discussed in a general context of concentric tube robots in view of their potential applications in surgery. Among the distinct features of the system is that the actuation module provides a mechanical decoupling between the available motions that effectively facilitates control of the device. Such robotic systems are considered particularly suitable for MR- guided interventions and compatibility issues with the specific imaging modality are discussed. Initial experimental testing of the device is presented which involved tip targeting and steering trials using direct visual feedback for guidance.

2011 Application of passivity-based techniques to the control of structurally flexible gantry robots
abstract
The present work deals with the application of a class of passivity-based control schemes to the flexible gantry robots domain. These controllers, which also include an adaptive version, effectively exploit the passivity property satisfied by a suitably defined input and output for the system in con junction with an approximate model of the payload-dominated dynamics. Simulations as well as hardware implementation on an experimental flexible gantry robot demonstrate the efficacy of the schemes, which combine end-point tracking of prescribed trajectories together with active vibrations suppression.

2010 Angular elevation control of robotic kite systems
abstract
The kite mechanics including some basic aerodynamics is reviewed in order to set up a framework for the development of robotic kite systems. Some historical background is provided together with a brief review of kite applications, which have been numerous and diverse. Robotizing the kite is expected to enhance its capabilities and revive scientific kiting. Towards that direction a methodology for controlling the angular elevation (and the altitude) of a single-line kite by actively adjusting the length of its bridle strings is proposed together with the required implementation hardware. Preliminary simulations and proof-of-concept field testing using a box kite were carried out.

2007 On-line parameter identification and adaptive control of rigid robots using base reaction forces/torques
abstract
The reaction forces at the base of a robotic manipulator contain model parameter information which can be acquired and used towards improving manipulation performance. The on-line extraction of this parameter content and its use towards improving the performance of model-based trajectory tracking controllers is examined. A modified version of a previously proposed nonlinear adaptive control scheme for rigid robots is also considered and the above source of information is used to drive its parameters update law. Simulation studies based on the model of a multilink rigid robot are employed to demonstrate these approaches.

2006 Manipulator for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Guided Interventions: Design, Prototype and Feasibility
abstract
The aim of this work is to develop a seven degree of freedom (DOF) remotely controlled manipulator to perform minimally invasive interventions with real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidance inside clinical cylindrical scanners. Control of the device is based on MR images collected pre-operatively and in real-time during the procedure. A user interface fuses all sensor information for man-in-the-loop control. Stereotactic guidance uses multislice and/or three-dimensional MR images to set a trajectory of insertion. Free-handed (or manual) guidance uses a master/slave control device, which replicates the kinematics structure of the arm, to control its movement. The control software checks any motion of the manipulator whether it is within an allowable volume extracted from MR images. The device control is performed with a host/target computer configuration. The system is connected to the MR scanner to receive the MR images and send the coordinates of the end-effector for dynamic control of the imaged plane. The manipulator compatibility with the MR environment and image-guided maneuvering was tested on a 1.5 Tesla MR scanner

2006 Robotic Manipulators with Remotely-actuated Joints: Implementation using Drive-shafts and U-Joints
abstract
A popular configuration for the actuation of robotic manipulators with articulated joints is to have motors directly attached to the joints. This approach does not involve any transmission elements between the actuators and the joints and it is advantageous in many respects. However, in certain cases this configuration may not be appropriate and manipulators with remotely-actuated joints may be desirable. In this article different alternatives for the implementation of remote actuation would be discussed and a case study would be presented relevant to a robotic arm, which was designed to operate inside a closed cylindrical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner for the performance of image-guided interventions. The transfer of motion to the articulated joints of the arm was implemented using drive shafts and universal joints (u-joints). Experimental testing of the arm highlights issues relevant to remote actuation

2005 A Passivity- Based Control Case Study of Flexible- Link Manipulators
abstract
The robotic control problem is considered from the passivity– based control point of view and a modified version of the computed torque method for rigid robots is briefly reviewed. A control strategy suitable for flexible–link robots manipulating large payloads is also presented, which effectively exploits the passivity property satisfied by a suitably defined set of inputs and outputs for the system in conjunction with an approximate model of the dynamics. Both of the above control schemes are experimentally implemented on a flexible– link, multi-joint arm in order to investigate their characteristics and provide useful insight into the control problem for flexible robots.
