2020 Preventing DDoS attacks in Path Identifiers-Based Information Centric Networks
abstract
Information Centric Networks (ICNs) have emerged in recent years in order to provide effective mechanisms for content distribution and retrieval. However, these future network architectures are vulnerable to Distributed Denial of Service Attacks (DDoS). In this paper, we propose an effective mechanism to counter these attacks in path identifier-based information centric networks. The proposed mechanism, called GET Message logging based filtering (GMLF), employs Bloom filter based logging to store incoming GET messages such that corresponding content messages are verified, while filtering packets originating from malicious hosts.

2015 Handling System Overload Resulting from DDoS Attacks and Flash Crowd Events
abstract
This paper presents a system that provides mitigation for DDoS attacks as a service, and is capable of handling flash crowd events at the same time. Providing DDoS protection as a service represents an important solution especially for Websites that have limited resources with no infrastructure in place for defense against these attacks. The proposed system is composed of two main components: (i) The distributed CAPTCHA service, which comprises a large number of powerful nodes geographically and suitably distributed in the Internet acting as a large distributed firewall, and (ii) The HTTPredirect module, which is a stateless HTTP server that redirects Web requests destined to the targeted Webserver to one of the CAPTCHA nodes. The CAPTCHA node can then segregate legitimate clients from automated attacks by requiring them to solve a challenge. Upon successful response, legitimate clients (humans) are forwarded through a given CAPTCHA node to the Webserver.

2009 JUST-Google: A Search Engine-Based Defense Against Botnet-Based DDoS Attacks
abstract
Botnet-based distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks represent an emerging and sophisticated threat for today's Internet. Attackers are now able to mimic the behavior of legitimate users to a great extent, making the issue of countering these attacks very challenging. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective scheme that enables an ISP's edge routers to pass a great percentage of legitimate traffic, that is destined to a Web server under DDoS attack within that ISP, while filtering all other traffic. The proposed scheme, called JUST-Google, is based on the fact that Web search engines (especially Googletrade) represent the entrance for today's Web, thus making it in a strategic position to defend against these attacks. The main idea is that Googletrade can assist in identifying human users from bot programs by directing users who want to access a Web site under attack to a group of nodes that will perform authentication in which users are required to solve a reverse Turing test to obtain access to the Web server. Performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme would enable legitimate clients to access a Web site that is under attack with high probability.

2006 Intentional Dropping: A Novel Scheme for SYN Flooding Mitigation
abstract
This paper presents a novel scheme to mitigate the effect of SYN flooding attacks. The scheme, called intentional dropping based filtering, is based on the observation of client's persistence (i.e., client's reaction to packet loss by subsequent retransmissions) which is very widespread as it is built in TCP's connection setup. The main idea is to intentionally drop the first SYN packet of each connection request. Subsequent SYN packet from a request is passed only if it adheres to the TCP's timeout mechanism. Our analysis shows that the proposed scheme reduces attacker's effective attack rate significantly with an acceptable increase in connection establishment latency.

2006 Novel Hybrid Schemes Employing Packet Marking and Logging for IP Traceback
abstract
Tracing DoS attacks that employ source address spoofing is an important and challenging problem. Traditional traceback schemes provide spoofed packets traceback capability either by augmenting the packets with partial path information (i.e., packet marking) or by storing packet digests or signatures at intermediate routers (i.e., packet logging). Such approaches require either a large number of attack packets to be collected by the victim to infer the paths (packet marking) or a significant amount of resources to be reserved at intermediate routers (packet logging). We adopt a hybrid traceback approach in which packet marking and packet logging are integrated in a novel manner, so as to achieve the best of both worlds, that is, to achieve a small number of attack packets to conduct the traceback process and a small amount of resources to be allocated at intermediate routers for packet logging purposes. Based on this notion, two novel traceback schemes are presented. The first scheme, called distributed link-list traceback (DLLT), is based on the idea of preserving the marking information at intermediate routers in such a way that it can be collected using a link list-based approach. The second scheme, called probabilistic pipelined packet marking (PPPM), employs the concept of a "pipeline" for propagating marking information from one marking router to another so that it eventually reaches the destination. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes against various performance metrics through a combination of analytical and simulation studies. Our studies show that the proposed schemes offer a drastic reduction in the number of packets required to conduct the traceback process and a reasonable saving in the storage requirement.

2004 Topology Based Packet Marking
abstract
Recently, several schemes have been proposed for IP traffic source identification for tracing attacks that employ source address spoofing such as denial of service (DoS) attacks. Most of these schemes are based on packet marking (i.e., augmenting IP packets with partial path information). A major challenge to packet marking schemes is the limited space available in the IP header for marking purposes. In this paper, we focus on this issue and propose a topology based encoding schemes supported by real Internet measurements. In particular, we propose an idealized deterministic edge append scheme in which we assume that the IP header can be modified to include the marking option field of fixed size. Also, we propose a deterministic pipelined packet marking scheme that is backward compatible with IPv4 (i.e., no IP header modification). The validity of both schemes depends directly on the statistical information that we extract from large data sets that represent Internet maps. Our studies show that it is possible to encode an entire path using 52 bits
