| 2025 | TOSS: Tiering of Serverless Snapshots for Memory-Efficient Serverless ComputingabstractServerless computing is an emerging cloud computing paradigm where users offload functions to serverless platforms that manage their own execution environments. Despite recent advancements on efficient serverless management, we find that cloud providers' solutions lead to unnecessary memory overheads, and significant memory cost by assuming a single tier of memory (DRAM). In this paper, we evaluate previous serverless works and offer insights about enabling memory tiering for serverless. Based on our insights, we introduce Tiering of Serverless Snapshots (TOSS), a heterogeneous memory mechanism that aims to reduce the total memory cost on serverless platforms, while achieving comparable performance to single-tier solutions. We show that TOSS achieves near optimal memory cost for most functions, while offloading on average 92% of the memory to the slow tier. In addition, TOSS achieves$52 \times$lower setup time and up to$4.2 \times$lower invocation time than the state-of-the-art DRAM-only mechanism. | 2025 | SVDE: Serverless Framework for Low-Latency Video Analytic Queries With Hardware DisaggregationabstractVideo analytics applications are gaining popularity among serverless environments. One issue that appears in existing serverless platforms is that they do not fully exploit opportunities to efficiently handle video chunking as they assume that all video chunks display similar computation and communication overheads. Those overheads vary and benefit from fine-grained handling. Scheduling non-uniform chunks is even more challenging when the hardware resources are heterogeneous and the network between the resources is non-uniform. To address these challenges, we propose SVDE, a heterogeneous serverless cloud framework for massive video processing workloads. SVDE employs a trained decision tree regression to efficiently decide where to process each video chunk, by holistically considering the non-uniform chunk sizes, heterogeneity of the node hardware, queuing status of each node, and an unbalanced network. Furthermore, we develop an efficient operator backend that will be open-sourced as part of SVDE.Compared to prior works, SVDE achieves up to 3.2× speedup on ten real-world video workloads due to its holistic scheduling decision-making, while our operator backend outperforms the popular Pytorch JIT backend by 5×. | 2020 | Characterizing and Modeling Non-Volatile Memory SystemsabstractScalable server-grade non-volatile RAM (NVRAM) DIMMs became commercially available with the release of Intel's Optane DIMM. Recent studies on Optane DIMM systems unveil discrepant performance characteristics, compared to what many researchers assumed before the product release. Most of these studies focus on system software design and performance analysis. To thoroughly analyze the source of this discrepancy and facilitate real-NVRAM-aware architecture design, we propose a framework that characterizes and models Optane DIMM's microarchitecture. Our framework consists of a Low-level profilEr for Non-volatile memory Systems (LENS) and a Validated cycle-Accurate NVRAM Simulator (VANS). LENS allows us to comprehensively analyze the performance attributes and reverse engineer NVRAM microarchitectures. Based on LENS characterization, we develop VANS, which models the sophisticated microarchitecture design of Optane DIMM, and is validated by comparing with the detailed performance characteristics of Optane-DIMM-attached Intel servers. VANS adopts a modular design that can be easily modified to extend to other NVRAM architecture designs; it can also be attached to full-system simulators, such as gem51. By using LENS and VANS, we develop two architectural optimizations on top of Optane DIMM, Lazy Cache and Pre-translation, which significantly improve cloud workload performance. | 2019 | MEGA: overcoming traditional problems with OS huge page managementabstractModern computer systems now feature memory banks whose aggregate size ranges from tens to hundreds of GBs. In this context, contemporary workloads can and do often consume vast amounts of main memory. This upsurge in memory consumption routinely results in increased virtual-to-physical address translations, and consequently and more importantly, more translation misses. Both of these aspects collectively do hamper the performance of workload execution. A solution aimed at dramatically reducing the number of address translation misses has been to provide hardware support for pages with bigger sizes, termed huge pages. In this paper, we empirically demonstrate the benefits and drawbacks of using such huge pages. In particular, we show that it is essential for modern OS to refine their software mechanisms to more effectively manage huge pages. Based on our empirical observations, we propose and implement MEGA, a framework for huge page support for the Linux kernel. MEGA deploys basic tracking mechanisms and a novel memory compaction algorithm that jointly provide for the effective management of huge pages. We experimentally evaluate MEGA using an array of both synthetic and real workloads and demonstrate that our framework tackles known problems associated with huge pages including increased page fault latency, memory bloating as well as memory fragmentation, while at the same time it delivers all huge pages benefits.
