| 2024 | Revisiting the Self-Consistency Challenges in Multi-Choice Question Formats for Large Language Model EvaluationabstractMulti-choice questions (MCQ) are a common method for assessing the world knowledge of large language models (LLMs), demonstrated by benchmarks such as MMLU and C-Eval. However, recent findings indicate that even top-tier LLMs, such as ChatGPT and GPT4, might display inconsistencies when faced with slightly varied inputs. This raises concerns about the credibility of MCQ-based evaluations. To address this issue, we introduced three knowledge-equivalent question variants: option position shuffle, option label replacement, and conversion to a True/False format. We rigorously tested a range of LLMs, varying in model size (from 6B to 70B) and types—pretrained language model (PLM), supervised fine-tuning (SFT), and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). Our findings from MMLU and C-Eval revealed that accuracy for individual questions lacks robustness, particularly in smaller models (<30B) and PLMs. Consequently, we advocate that consistent accuracy may serve as a more reliable metric for evaluating and ranking LLMs. Mingzhou Xu, Xiangyu Duan |

| 2023 | A Survey on Zero Pronoun TranslationabstractZero pronouns (ZPs) are frequently omitted in pro-drop languages (e.g.Chinese, Hungarian, and Hindi), but should be recalled in nonpro-drop languages (e.g.English).This phenomenon has been studied extensively in machine translation (MT), as it poses a significant challenge for MT systems due to the difficulty in determining the correct antecedent for the pronoun. This survey paper highlights the major works that have been undertaken in zero pronoun translation (ZPT) after the neural revolution so that researchers can recognize the current state and future directions of this field. We provide an organization of the literature based on evolution, dataset, method, and evaluation. In addition, we compare and analyze competing models and evaluation metrics on different benchmarks. We uncover a number of insightful findings such as: 1) ZPT is in line with the development trend of large language model; 2) data limitation causes learning bias in languages and domains; 3) performance improvements are often reported on single benchmarks, but advanced methods are still far from realworld use; 4) general-purpose metrics are not reliable on nuances and complexities of ZPT, emphasizing the necessity of targeted metrics; 5) apart from commonly-cited errors, ZPs will cause risks of gender bias. | 2021 | Document Graph for Neural Machine TranslationabstractPrevious works have shown that contextual information can improve the performance of neural machine translation (NMT).However, most existing document-level NMT methods only consider a few number of previous sentences. How to make use of the whole document as global contexts is still a challenge. To address this issue, we hypothesize that a document can be represented as a graph that connects relevant contexts regardless of their distances. We employ several types of relations, including adjacency, syntactic dependency, lexical consistency, and coreference, to construct the document graph. Then, we incorporate both source and target graphs into the conventional Transformer architecture with graph convolutional networks.Experiments on various NMT benchmarks, including IWSLT English-French, Chinese-English, WMT English-German and Opensubtitle English-Russian, demonstrate that using document graphs can significantly improve the translation quality.Extensive analysis verifies that the document graph is beneficial for capturing discourse phenomena. | 2019 | Leveraging Local and Global Patterns for Self-Attention NetworksabstractSelf-attention networks have received increasing research attention.By default, the hidden states of each word are hierarchically calculated by attending to all words in the sentence, which assembles global information. However, several studies pointed out that taking all signals into account may lead to overlooking neighboring information (e.g.phrase pattern). To address this argument, we propose a hybrid attention mechanism to dynamically leverage both of the local and global information.Specifically, our approach uses a gating scalar for integrating both sources of the information, which is also convenient for quantifying their contributions.Experiments on various neural machine translation tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The extensive analyses verify that the two types of contexts are complementary to each other, and our method gives highly effective improvements in their integration.
