2025 Neural Network-Based Control of Forced-Convection and Thermoelectric Coolers
abstract
Thermoelectric cooling technology holds great promise as a spot-cooling solution for the VLSI circuits. Typically, it is combined with a forced convection cooler, such as a fan to achieve effective thermal management. The optimal driving current for the thermoelectric coolers and fan rotation speed play a crucial role in minimizing cooling power consumption while ensuring safe operating temperatures for the VLSI chip dies. Various software-based optimization frameworks have been proposed to calculate the near-optimal values in real time. Nonetheless, these frameworks suffer from several limitations, including slow runtime, high power consumption, costly optimization software license, and the need for a separate computer to execute the optimization software. This article presents a hardware-friendly neural network (NN)-based optimizer that can learn from the functionality of a software optimizer. In order to train the NN model, a self-supervised learning strategy is employed to generate the desired labeled data. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model successfully meets the thermal constraints across all the tested benchmarks, with an overall system cooling power consumption increase of only 3.6% compared to a software optimizer. Furthermore, the hardware implementation of the proposed model proves to be more than five orders of magnitude faster than the software-based optimizer, consuming a negligible amount of power while occupying a small die area.

2023 A Hardware-Friendly Real-Time Implementation of the Auditory Attention Based on a Novel Spiking Winner-Take-All Network
abstract
In recent decades, the modeling and designing of neuromorphic systems have received considerable attention, leading to the development of electrophysiological devices that can mimic the dynamic behavior of cortical networks. Some features, such as parallel processing, real-time performance, reconfigurability, low production cost, and good accuracy, make field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) an ideal hardware platform for implementing spiking neural networks (SNNs), which has become very popular in the field of neural computing. In this work, we investigated a high-performance FPGA design of the auditory attention (AA) to simulate the on-chip “cocktail party” effect similar to what happens in the brain. In the first step, we introduce a novel spiking winner-take-all (SWTA) network consisting of a hardware-friendly Izhikevich neuron model and explore its biological characteristics and stability. We then use this network as a receptive field in the primary auditory cortex, which is tuned by attention signals. The desired sound frequency will be selected as the target and transmitted to the higher layers of the auditory cortex for further processing, while other frequencies are severely suppressed. Experimental results show that the proposed network accurately follows the dynamic behavior defined in the AA theory and emphasizes the resource consumption after post place and routes on a fully efficient hardware implementation, where less than 4% of the resources were used to implement a network with 1856 neurons.

2019 CMV: Clustered Majority Voting Reliability-Aware Task Scheduling for Multicore Real-Time Systems
abstract
This paper proposes a novel reliability-aware hard real-time task scheduling method for multicore systems along with a quantitative reliability model. The proposed method uses a heuristic clustered replication to maintain the desired reliability threshold with both minimum replication overhead and latency increase. It also minimizes intercore communication overhead of tasks. Both single and multiple soft errors are considered in this method. Simulation results show that the efficiency of our proposed approach improves with larger network-on-chip sizes, higher reliability thresholds, and higher number of tolerating errors. The proposed method achieves near optimal replica overhead (up to$\text{7.3}\%$higher than optimal replica overhead) with up to$\text{2500}\%$time complexity improvement compared to exhaustive exploration. Experimental results also show that the feasibility of the proposed method is higher than the conventional replication method up to$\text{9.3}\%$. All experiments are performed on both synthetic random task graphs and PARSEC real application benchmarks. Obtained task mapping solutions with communication volume reduction and near optimal replica overhead impose negligible latency increase (up to$\text{6.3}\%$) in comparison with the space exploration approach.

2018 A Majority-Based Reliability-Aware Task Mapping in High-Performance Homogenous NoC Architectures
abstract
This article presents a new reliability-aware task mapping approach in a many-core platform at design time for applications with DAG-based task graphs. The main goal is to devise a task mapping which meets a predefined reliability threshold considering a minimized performance degradation. The proposed approach uses a majority-voting replication technique to fulfill error-masking capability. A quantitative reliability model is also proposed for the platform. Our platform is a homogenous many-core architecture with mesh-based interconnection using traditional deterministic XY routing algorithm. Our iterative approach is applicable to an unlimited number of system fault types. All parts of the platform, including cores, links, and routers, are assumed to be prone to failures. We used the MNLP optimization technique to find the optimal mapping of the presented task graph. Experimental results show that our suggested task mappings not only comply with predefined reliability thresholds but also achieve notable time complexity reduction with respect to exhaustive space exploration.

2017 LORAP: Low-Overhead Power and Reliability-Aware Task Mapping Based on Instruction Footprint for Real-Time Applications
abstract
This paper presents a novel power and reliability-aware task mapping approach in many-core platforms for hard realtime applications which is called LORAP. The LORAP contrives a task mapping scenario to meet the predefined reliability threshold ensuring minimum power consumption overhead. It drastically decreases task mapping time complexity and uses slack time of running applications to apply a heuristic DVFS to reduce the power consumption overhead. The quantitative reliability modeling of this paper uses effective failure rate based on instruction footprints of the task which is obtained using a new low complexity AVF calculations algorithm. Proposed novel 4-step iterative approach is applicable to an unlimited number of fault types. All parts of the platform including cores, links, and routers are assumed to be prone to failures. The Mixed Non-Linear Programming (MNLP) optimization technique is used to find the task mapping solution. Results show that LORAP reaches the solution with up to 1005% higher than the exhaustive approach and also it only imposes power consumption up to 18.2% higher than optimal solution.

2015 OPLE: A Heuristic Custom Instruction Selection Algorithm Based on Partitioning and Local Exploration of Application Dataflow Graphs
abstract
In this article, a heuristic custom instruction (CI) selection algorithm is presented. The proposed algorithm, which is called OPLE for “Optimization based on Partitioning and Local Exploration,” uses a combination of greedy and optimal optimization methods. It searches for the near-optimal solution by reducing the search space based on partitioning the identified CI set. The partitioning of the identified set guarantees the success of the algorithm independent of the size of the identified set. First, the algorithm finds the near-optimal CIs from the candidate CIs for each part. Next, the suggested CIs from different parts are combined to determine the final selected CI set. To improve the set of the selected CIs, the solution is evolved by calling the algorithm iteratively. The efficacy of the algorithm is assessed by comparing its performance to those of optimal and nonoptimal methods. A comparative study is performed for a number of benchmarks under different area budgets and I/O constraints. The results reveal higher speedups for the OPLE algorithm, especially for larger identified candidate sets and/or small area budgets compared to those of the nonoptimal solutions. Compared to the nonoptimal techniques, the proposed algorithm provides 30% higher speedup improvement on average. The maximum improvement is 117%. The results also demonstrate that in many cases OPLE is able to find the optimal solution.

2014 Impact of Process Variations on Speedup and Maximum Achievable Frequency of Extensible Processors
abstract
In this article, we investigate the impact of process variations on the speedup and maximum frequency of the extended ISA processor. First, without considering process variations, a custom functional unit (CFU) is designed based on nominal timing parameters, then the timing variations of critical paths of the extensible processor, including the baseline processor and the CFU, are investigated by considering both systematic and random variations. Next, the maximum frequency of the extensible processor and the speed enhancement factor of the extended ISA for different benchmarks are investigated. Results show that timing variation could reduce the speedup of the extensible processor. However, this reduction is highly dependent on the baseline processor and the CFU structures. Additionally, the impact of process variations in the worst-case design approach is studied. Results show that the speedup of the extensible processor is reduced more than in the case when custom instructions (CIs) are selected without considering process variations. To study the impact of each variation type, speedup variations due to random and systematic variations are investigated separately. The study reveals that random variation has a similar effect on the CFU and the baseline processor, while the impact of systematic variation on the baseline processor is greater than the CFU.

2013 Reliability-aware cross-layer custom instruction screening
abstract
Bias Temperature Instability (BTI) and process variation introduce remarkable unpredictability to Custom Instructions (CIs) manufactured at nano-scale technology. Moreover, shrinking the feature size to nanometer levels makes soft error another critical issue of CIs. To tackle these factors, we propose a reliability-aware cross-layer CI screening method. By adding an intermediate phase between the CI generation and CI selection phases, this method enables designers to prune the outputs of the generation phase in order to guarantee that synthesized CIs meet the required reliability constraints. For this purpose, a holistic framework is developed to analyze the combined effects of the BTI and process variation as well as the soft error on the CIs by making a link between circuit-level and system-level information. Based on this information collected from different layers of abstraction, the screening method prunes those CIs which cannot meet the reliability constraints. Experiments illustrate that BTI-unaware CI selection techniques may not meet the desired lifetime because of BTI-induced delay shift of CIs. Moreover, according to the results, a remarkable percentage of CIs is vulnerable to soft error and should not be fed into CI selection phase.

2012 An architecture-level approach for mitigating the impact of process variations on extensible processors
abstract
In this paper, we present an architecture-level approach to mitigate the impact of process variations on extended instruction set architectures (ISAs). The proposed architecture adds one extra cycle to execute custom instructions (CIs) that violate the maximum allowed propagation delay due to the process variations. Using this method, the parametric yield of manufactured chips will greatly improve. The cost is an increase in the cycle latency of some of the CIs, and hence, a slight performance degradation for the extensible processor architectures. To minimize the performance penalty of the proposed approach, we introduce a new merit function for selecting the CIs during the selection phase of the ISA extension design flow. To evaluate the efficacy of the new selection method, we compare the extended ISAs obtained by this method with those selected based on the worst-case delay. Simulation results reveal that a speedup improvement of about 18% may be obtained by the proposed selection method. Also, by using the proposed merit function, the proposed architecture can improve the speedup about 20.7%.

2012 Power constraint testing for multi-clock domain SoCs using concurrent hybrid BIST
abstract
This paper presents a novel approach for selecting optimal pseudo random and deterministic test patterns and minimizing test time for multi-clock domain SoCs based on a hybrid BIST architecture for each core. For test scheduling, a concurrent method considering peak power upper bound is used. A test scheduling graph is presented for modeling concurrent hybrid BIST test scheduling. Furthermore, a heuristic is proposed for selecting cores to be tested concurrently and the order of applying sequence of test patterns to each core. Experimental results show that the proposed heuristics for both selecting groups of cores to be tested concurrently during the SoC test process, and determining the amount of deterministic and pseudo random test patterns for each core, give us an optimized method for multi clock domain SoC testing compared with the existing methods.

2012 Soft Error Analysis on Communication Channels in On-Chip Communication Networks
abstract
Increase in the number of transistors has resulted in more vulnerability of digital systems to soft-errors. For a long time, designers have used the worst case scenarios in their designs to alleviate such disturbances, but due to the overall increase in cost in relation with system performance, manufacturing based on worst case scenarios for transient faults is no longer a viable option. Meanwhile, demand for higher performance systems, multi-core processors, and Networks on Chip (NoC) communication structures are affecting design methodologies, and must be considered while dealing with soft errors. Demand for more flexible and high performance systems have made such communication infrastructures so complex that a perfect error free communication is hard to come by. This paper proposes a method to evaluate the reliability of communication infrastructures in a Multi-Processor System on Chip (MPSoC). In this method, we evaluate vulnerability of communication systems based on data flow vulnerability in the network. The experimental results show estimated values for silence data corruption (SDC) of MPSoC's communication infrastructures under various routing algorithms and traffic loads.

2012 An efficient reliability simulation flow for evaluating the hot carrier injection effect in CMOS VLSI circuits
abstract
Hot carrier injection (HCI) effect is one of the major reliability concerns in VLSI circuits. This paper presents a scalable reliability simulation flow, including a logic cell characterization method and an efficient full chip simulation method, to analyze the HCI-induced transistor aging with a fast run time and high accuracy. The transistor-level HCI effect is modeled based on the Reaction-Diffusion (R-D) framework. The gate-level HCI impact characterization method combines HSpice simulation and piecewise linear curve fitting. The proposed characterization method reveals that the HCI effect on some transistors is much more significant than the others according to the logic cell structure. Additionally, during the circuit simulation, pertinent transitions are identified and all cells in the circuit are classified into two groups: critical and non-critical. The proposed method reduces the simulation time while maintaining high accuracy by applying fine granularity simulation time steps to the critical cells and coarse granularity ones to the non-critical cells in the circuit.

2012 Architectural vulnerability aware checkpoint placement in a multicore processor
abstract
As the system complexity increases, the failure probability increases substantially. Therefore, the system requires techniques for supporting fault tolerance. Checkpointing technique is widely used to reduce the execution time of long-running programs in presence of failures and enhancing the reliability of such systems. Several methods were studied thus far in order to determine the checkpointing interval which optimizes system performance. The crucial parameter in all of these solutions is system failure model which is primarily assumed as exponential or Weibull distributions. But, these models are not perfectly accurate since they fail to model the effect of soft errors. In this paper, we introduce a more realistic failure model based on the processors AVF. In addition, we propose three checkpoint placement methods with constant and variable intervals that determine suitable checkpoint places for the proposed failure model. Our experimental results show that our method, which is implementable on any multicore system, can find the suitable points in which checkpoints should be taken.

2011 Securing Embedded Processors against Power Analysis Based Side Channel Attacks Using Reconfigurable Architecture
abstract
Power analysis based side channel attacks are significant security risk in embedded applications. Reconfigurable architecture has already been proposed as a security improvement method for run time monitoring systems or implementing critical parts of cryptographic applications. Here we propose reconfigurable architecture as a hardware countermeasure against power analysis based side channel attacks. We augment an embedded processor with a reconfigurable functional unit (RFU). By random execution of custom instructions on the RFU we mask power analysis based side channel attacks. Moreover we devised an automatic design flow to generate RFU and its configuration bits from cryptographic algorithms' source code. Obfuscation of base processor power traces as our primary goal is complied with RFUs covering in average about 30% of object code. We also report the power traces for our secure processor and the overall timing and area overhead. The correlation coefficient is calculated for AES and SHA cryptographic algorithms and experimental results show our method produces power traces close to random traces. Our approach is completely generic and can be used for any cryptographic application. Compared to previous methods, our work costs no runtime overhead and an average of 27% area overhead.

2009 A cost-error optimized architecture for 9/7 lifting based Discrete Wavelet Transform with balanced pipeline stages
abstract
Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is increasingly recognized in image/video compression standards, as indicated by its use in JPEG2000. The lifting scheme algorithm is an alternative DWT implementation that has a lower computational complexity. In this paper, a new high performance lifting-based architecture is presented for the 9/7 DWT engine. The proposed architecture has a balanced pipeline and improves both the computational error and hardware complexity for any given working frequency. In the proposed architecture, the constant coefficients are modified by introducing new variables to the conventional lifting structure to minimize hardware cost and computational error, imposed by quantization of coefficients. Simulation results indicate a quality improvement of up to 15 dB when compared to an architecture using the standard coefficients that has the same hardware cost and working frequency. Similarly, the hardware cost is reduced by about 20% when both architectures deliver the same PSNR when operating at the same frequency.

2008 Scalable Architecture for on-Chip Neural Network Training using Swarm Intelligence
abstract
This paper presents a novel architecture for on-chip neural network training using particle swarm optimization (PSO). PSO is an evolutionary optimization algorithm with a growing field of applications which has been recently used to train neural networks. The architecture exploits PSO algorithm to evolve network weights as well as a method called layer partitioning to implement neural networks. In the proposed method, a neural network is partitioned into groups of neurons and the groups are sequentially mapped to available functional units. Thus, the architecture is reconfigurable for training and implementing different multilayer feedforward neural networks without the need for modifying the architecture. The implementation is intended for real-time applications regarding hardware cost and speed. The results show that the proposed system provides a trade-off between resource requirements and speed.

2008 A Novel GA-Based High-Level Synthesis Technique to Enhance RT-Level Concurrent Testing
abstract
This paper presents an efficient high-level synthesis (HLS) approach to improve RT-level concurrent testing. The proposed method used for both fault detection and fault location. At first the available resources are used in their dead intervals to test active resources for fault detection, and then some changes are applied to the RT-level controller to locate the faults. The fault detection step is based on a genetic algorithm (GA) search technique. This genetic algorithm is applied to the design after high level synthesis process to explore the test map. The proposed method has been evaluated based on dependability enhancement and area/latency overhead imposed to different benchmarks after applying our algorithm. The dependability has been considered in terms of fault coverage. The experimental result shows that applying our algorithm, the associated area overhead and performance penalty are negligible while the online fault coverage improvement is considerable.

2008 Reliability in Application Specific Mesh-Based NoC Architectures
abstract
Networks on chips (NoCs) provide a mechanism for handling complex communications in the next generation of integrated circuits. At the same time, lower yield in nano-technology, makes self repair communication channels a necessity in design of digital systems. This paper proposes a reliable NoC architecture based on specific application mapped onto an NoC. This architecture is capable of recovering from permanent switch failures via replacing them by neighboring switches. This method has hardware and power consumption overhead, but significantly improves reliability and has a very little effect on the performance of the system. We suggest a reliability analysis method based on the combinatorial reliability models and use it to evaluate our proposed fault-tolerant NoC architecture.

The main contribution of this paper is utilizing bio- inspired evolutionary algorithm for reliability oriented high level synthesis. In this paper genetic algorithm is used to schedule a data-flow graph considering latency and resource allocation considering resource constraints and area overhead. Then a co-evolutionary strategy merges the results of these solutions to find the RT level design of the circuit which satisfies both performance and area constraints. To satisfy the user- defined reliability, another genetic algorithm is developed to insert some hardware redundancies to the resulted data-path. Experimental results show using the proposed approach results in an acceptable reliability with a considerable area reduction in comparison with TMR.

2007 Improving Robustness of Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) Services Related to Soft-Errors
abstract
Nowadays, more critical applications that have stringent real-time constraint are placed and run in an environment with real-time operating system (RTOS). The provided services of RTOSs are subject to faults that affect both functional and timing of Tasks which are running based on RTOS. In this paper, we try to evaluate and analyze robustness of services due to soft-errors in two proposed architecture of RTOS which are (SW-RTOS and HW/SW- RTOS). According to experimental result we finally propose an architecture which provides more robust services in term of soft-error. Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) users desire predictable response time at an affordable cost, due to this demand Hardware/Software Real-Time Operating Systems (HW/SW-RTOS) appeared. This paper analyzes the impact of soft-errors in real-time systems running applications under purely Software RTOS versus HW/SW-RTOS. The proposed model is used to evaluate robustness of services like scheduling, synchronization time management and memory management and inter process communication in Software based RTOS and HW/SW-RTOS. Experimental results show HW/SW-RTOS provide more robust services in term of soft-err or against purely software based RTOS.

2007 On-Chip Verification of NoCs Using Assertion Processors
abstract
NoC verification has become an increasingly difficult task due to the growing complexity of these systems. In this paper, we propose a methodology based on assertions for on-chip verification of NoCs. We have a local assertion processor (LAP) in each core to manage the outputs of assertions inside it. To route assertions' outputs toward this processor, we offer a boundary scan chain mechanism. Moreover, after detecting error, each LAP dispatches a packet called error packet to a global assertion processor (GAP) which receives error packets from all cores and performs necessary actions regarding to errors and their severities. Finally, in order to evaluate our method, we apply it on an NoC structure and show the experimental results.

The main approach of this paper is utilizing bio-inspired evolutionary strategies for high level test synthesis. In this paper a genetic algorithm (GA) is implemented to schedule a data-flow graph considering latency. Hardware/Software partitioning is one of the most important issues of codesign of embedded systems, since the costs and delays of the final results of a design will strongly depend on partitioning. We present an algorithm based on Particle Swarm Optimization to perform the hardware/software partitioning of a given task graph for minimum cost subject to timing constraint. By novel evolving strategy, we enhance the efficiency and result's quality of our partitioning algorithm in an acceptable run-time. Also, we compare our results with those of Genetic Algorithm on different task graphs. Experimental results show the algorithm's effectiveness in achieving the optimal solution of the HW/SW partitioning problem even in large task graphs.

abstract
Improving testability during the early stages of High-Level Synthesis (HLS) reduces test hardware overheads, test costs, design iterations, and also improves fault coverage. In this paper, we present a novel register allocation algorithm which is based on weighted graph coloring, targeting testability improvement.
