2018 Normalised fuzzy index for research ranking
abstract
There are great interests of designing research metrics and indices to measure the research impacts in research institutes. Unfortunately, most of those indices ignore critical design issues, e.g. the disparity between domains, the impact of journals or conferences in which papers are published, normalising the range of the index values to certain intervals, and the scalability of using the index to rank different research entities. In this paper, a new normalised fuzzy index, (NFindex), is proposed as a fuzzy-based research impact metric. The proposed index is a scalable index whose values are normalised to the percentage levels. NFindex achieves both inter-discipline normalisation and intra-discipline consistency. The capability of NFindex to achieve the inter-discipline normalisation enables fair comparison between different research domains regardless their nature in terms of influence and contribution to other research areas, e.g. natural science. Therefore, NFindex gives a universal normalised single-number metric that can be used by research institutes to solve the problem of inter-discipline scholar ranking. Moreover, it can help universal ranking of universities and research institutes according to their research capabilities and impacts. The obtained results, on diverse research areas, prove the potential of NFindex in terms of both intra-discipline consistency and inter-discipline normalisation.

2014 Tradeoff Between Reliability and Security in Multiple Access Relay Networks Under Falsified Data Injection Attack
abstract
We consider a multiple access relay network where multiple sources send independent data to a single destination through multiple relays, which may inject falsified data into the network. To detect the malicious relays and discard (erase) data from them, tracing bits are embedded in the information data at each source node. In addition, parity bits are added to correct the errors caused by fading and noise. When the total amount of redundancy, tracing bits plus parity bits, is fixed, an increase in parity bits to increase the reliability requires a decrease in tracing bits, which leads to a less accurate detection of malicious behavior of relays, and vice versa. We investigate the tradeoff between the tracing bits and the parity bits in minimizing the probability of decoding error and maximizing the throughput in multisource, multirelay networks under falsified data injection attacks. The energy and throughput gains provided by the optimal allocation of redundancy and the tradeoff between reliability and security are analyzed.

2008 A novel stability quantification of detected interest points in scale-space
abstract
In local invariant features, the detected interest points using scale-space representations are considered the most robust to many variations in the imaging conditions. The existing approaches extract interest points at scale-space differential singularities. In these approaches, all detected interest points are considered equally robust without taking in consideration the variable sensitivities of these interest points with respect to noise effects. In this paper, we analyze the robustness of detected interest points at scale-space singularities against noise effects. Also, we propose a novel quantitative stability measure of these interest points. The evaluation results show the effectiveness of the proposed stability measure in estimating the robustness of the detected interest points to noise effects.

2006 CSIFT: A SIFT Descriptor with Color Invariant Characteristics
abstract
SIFT has been proven to be the most robust local invariant feature descriptor. SIFT is designed mainly for gray images. However, color provides valuable information in object description and matching tasks. Many objects can be misclassified if their color contents are ignored. This paper addresses this problem and proposes a novel colored local invariant feature descriptor. Instead of using the gray space to represent the input image, the proposed approach builds the SIFT descriptors in a color invariant space. The built Colored SIFT (CSIFT) is more robust than the conventional SIFT with respect to color and photometrical variations. The evaluation results support the potential of the proposed approach.

2006 Image Alignment Using Learning Prior Appearance Model
abstract
A new approach to align an image of a textured object with a given prototype is proposed. Visual appearance of the images, after equalizing their signals, is modeled with a Markov-Gibbs random field with pairwise interaction. Similarity to the prototype is measured by a Gibbs energy of signal cooccurrences in a characteristic subset of pixel pairs derived automatically from the prototype. An object is aligned by an affine transformation maximizing the similarity by using an automatic initialization followed by gradient search. Experiments confirm that our approach aligns complex objects better than popular conventional algorithms.

2005 Robust robotic path planning using level sets
abstract
In this paper, we propose a general and robust robotic path planning framework for both planar and terrain environments using level set methods. The framework is general in the sense that it can be used for both 2D and 3D environments. It generates a collision-free optimum paths for the entire or a portion of the configuration space. The optimum planned path can be controlled to follow the safest, shortest, or hybrid path. We have demonstrated the robustness of the proposed framework by correctly extracting all planned paths of complex maps with several obstacles.

2004 Image content-based active sensor planning for a mobile trinocular active vision system
abstract
In this paper, we present a sensor planning approach for a mobile trinocular active vision system. At the stationary state (i.e., no motion) the sensor planning system calculates the generalized cameras' parameters (i.e., translational distance from the center, zoom, focus and vergence) using deterministic geometric specifications of both the sensors and the objects in their field of view. Some of these geometric parameters are difficult to be predetermined for the mobile system operation. In this paper, a new sensor planning approach, based on processing the content of the captured images, is proposed. The approach uses a combination of a closed-form solution for the translation between the three cameras, the vergence angle of the cameras as well as zoom and focus settings with the results of the correspondences between the acquired images and a predefined target object(s) obtained using the SIFT algorithm. We demonstrate the accuracy of the new approach using practical experiments.
