| 2025 | Robust Learning-Based Control for Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With Validation on a Soft RobotabstractExisting modeling and control methods for real-world systems typically deal with uncertainty and nonlinearity on a case-by-case basis. We present a universal and robust control framework for the general class of uncertain nonlinear systems. Our data-driven deep stochastic Koopman operator (DeSKO) model and robust learning control framework guarantee robust stability. DeSKO learns the uncertainty of dynamical systems by inferring a distribution of observables. The inferred distribution is used in our robust and stabilizing closed-loop controller for dynamical systems. We also develop a model predictive control framework with integral action to compensate for run-time parametric uncertainty, such as manipulating unknown objects. Modeling and control experiments in simulation show that our presented framework is more robust and scalable for robotic systems than state-of-the-art controllers using deep Koopman operators and reinforcement learning (RL) methods. We demonstrate that our method resists previously unseen uncertainties, such as external disturbances, at a magnitude of up to five times the maximum control input. Furthermore, we test our DeSKO-based control framework on a real-world soft robotic arm. It shows that our framework outperforms model-based controllers that have full knowledge of the model parameters, and the controller can conduct object pick-and-place tasks without further training. Our approach opens up new possibilities in robustly managing internal or external uncertainty while controlling high-dimensional nonlinear systems in a learning framework. This approach serves as a foundation to greatly simplify high-level control and decision-making for robots. Minghao Han, Kiwan Wong, Jacob Euler-Rolle, Lixian Zhang 0001, Robert K. Katzschmann |

| 2022 | Adaptive Dynamic Sliding Mode Control of Soft Continuum ManipulatorsabstractSoft robots are made of compliant materials and perform tasks that are challenging for rigid robots. However, their continuum nature makes it difficult to develop model-based control strategies. This work presents a robust model-based control scheme for soft continuum robots. Our dynamic model is based on the Euler-Lagrange approach, but it uses a more accurate description of the robot's inertia and does not include oversimplified assumptions. Based on this model, we introduce an adaptive sliding mode control scheme, which is robust against model parameter uncertainties and unknown input disturbances. We perform a series of experiments with a physical soft continuum arm to evaluate the effectiveness of our controller at tracking task-space trajectory under different payloads. The tracking performance of the controller is around 38 % more accurate than that of a state-of-the-art controller, i.e., the inverse dynamics method. Moreover, the proposed model-based control design is flexible and can be generalized to any continuum robotic arm with an arbitrary number of segments. With this control strategy, soft robotic object manipulation can become more accurate while remaining robust to disturbances. | 2021 | SoPrA: Fabrication & Dynamical Modeling of a Scalable Soft Continuum Robotic Arm with Integrated Proprioceptive SensingabstractDue to their inherent compliance, soft robots are more versatile than rigid linked robots when they interact with their environment, such as object manipulation or biomimetic motion, and are considered to be the key element in introducing robots to everyday environments. Although various soft robotic actuators exist, past research has focused primarily on designing and analyzing single components. Limited effort has been made to combine each component to create an overall capable, integrated soft robot. Ideally, the behavior of such a robot can be accurately modeled, and its motion within an environment uses its proprioception, without requiring external sensors. This work presents a design and modeling process for a Soft continuum Proprioceptive Arm (SoPrA) actuated by pneumatics. The integrated design is suitable for an analytical model due to its internal capacitive flex sensor for proprioceptive measurements and its fiber-reinforced fluidic elastomer actuators. The proposed analytical dynamical model accounts for the inertial effects of the actuator’s mass and the material properties, and predicts in real-time the soft robot’s behavior. Our estimation method integrates the analytical model with proprioceptive sensors to calculate external forces, all without relying on an external motion capture system. SoPrA is validated in a series of experiments demonstrating the model’s and sensor’s accuracy in estimation. SoPrA will enable soft arm manipulation including force sensing while operating in obstructed environments that disallows exteroceptive measurements. | 2020 | Novel Design of a Soft Pump Driven by Super-Coiled Polymer Artificial MusclesabstractThe widespread use of fluidic actuation for soft robots creates a high demand for soft pumps and compressors. However, current off-the-shelf pumps are usually rigid, noisy, and cumbersome. As a result, it is hard to integrate most commercial pumps into soft robotic systems, which restricts the autonomy and portability of soft robots. This paper presents the novel design of a soft pump based on bellow structure and super-coiled polymer (SCP) artificial muscles. The pump is flexible, lightweight, modular, scalable, quiet, and low cost. The pumping mechanism and fabrication process of the proposed soft pump is demonstrated. A pump prototype is fabricated to verify the proposed design and characterize its performance. From the characterization results, the pump can reach an output flow rate of up to 54 ml/min and delivers pressure up to 2.63 kPa. The pump has potential applications in untethered soft robots and wearable devices. Yu Alexander Tse, Kiwan Wong, Yang Yang 0031, Michael Yu Wang |
