| 2025 | Neurons: Emulating the Human Visual Cortex Improves Fidelity and Interpretability in fMRI-to-Video ReconstructionabstractDecoding visual stimuli from neural activity is essential for understanding the human brain. While fMRI methods have successfully reconstructed static images, fMRI-to-video reconstruction faces challenges due to the need for capturing spatiotemporal dynamics like motion and scene transitions. Recent approaches have improved semantic and perceptual alignment but struggle to integrate coarse fMRI data with detailed visual features. Inspired by the hierarchical organization of the visual system, we propose NEURONS, a novel framework that decouples learning into four correlated sub-tasks: key object segmentation, concept recognition, scene description, and blurry video reconstruction. This approach simulates the visual cortex's functional specialization, allowing the model to capture diverse video content. In the inference stage, NEURONS generates robust conditioning signals for a pre-trained text-to-video diffusion model to reconstruct the videos. Extensive experiments demonstrate that NEURONS outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, achieving solid improvements in video consistency (26.6%) and semantic-level accuracy (19.1%). Notably, NEURONS shows a strong functional correlation with the visual cortex, highlighting its potential for brain-computer interfaces and clinical applications. | 2025 | Interpretable Bilingual Multimodal Large Language Model for Diverse Biomedical TasksabstractSeveral medical Multimodal Large Languange Models (MLLMs) have been developed to address tasks involving visual images with textual instructions across various medical modalities, achieving impressive results.
Most current medical generalist models are region-agnostic, treating the entire image as a holistic representation. However, they struggle to identify which specific regions they are focusing on when generating a sentence.
To mimic the behavior of doctors, who typically begin by reviewing the entire image before concentrating on specific regions for a thorough evaluation, we aim to enhance the capability of medical MLLMs in understanding anatomical regions within entire medical scans.
To achieve it, we first formulate \textbf{Region-Centric tasks} and construct a \textbf{large-scale dataset, MedRegInstruct,} to incorporate regional information into training. Combining our collected dataset with other medical multimodal corpora for training, we propose a \textbf{Region-Aware medical MLLM, MedRegA}, which is the first bilingual generalist medical AI system to simultaneously handle image-level and region-level medical vision-language tasks across a broad range of modalities. Our MedRegA not only enables three region-centric tasks, but also achieves the best performance for visual question answering, report generation and medical image classification over 8 modalities, showcasing significant versatility. Experiments demonstrate that our model can not only accomplish powerful performance across various medical vision-language tasks in bilingual settings, but also recognize and detect structures in multimodal medical scans, boosting the interpretability and user interactivity of medical MLLMs. The codes and model will be made publicly available. | 2025 | Grouping-Based Cyclic Scheduling Under Age of Correlated Information ConstraintsabstractThis paper studies an internet of things (IoT) network where a fusion center relies on multi-view and correlated information generated by multiple sources to monitor various regions. Each region possesses hard age of correlated information (AoCI) constraints for information update, and accordingly we propose a scheduling policy to satisfy such needs and minimize the required wireless resources. We first approximate the problem to a dual bin-packing problem. Secondly, efficient scheduling policies are identified when the age constraints possess special mathematical properties, where the number of channels at most required is analyzed. Optimality conditions of the proposed policies are presented. For general constraints, a two-step grouping algorithm for multi-view (TGAM) is proposed to establish scheduling policies. Under TGAM, the constraints are mapped into a combination of the special constraints. To quickly identify an optimized mapping from a vast solution space, TGAM heuristically groups the regions according to their constraints and then searches for the optimal mapping for each group. Numerical results demonstrate that, compared to a derived lower bound, the proposed TGAM requires only 1.07% more channels. Additionally, the number of regions that can be served by TGAM is significantly larger than the state-of-the art algorithm, given the number of channels. | 2025 | MultiEYE: Dataset and Benchmark for OCT-Enhanced Retinal Disease Recognition From Fundus ImagesabstractExisting multi-modal learning methods on fundus and OCT images mostly require both modalities to be available and strictly paired for training and testing, which appears less practical in clinical scenarios. To expand the scope of clinical applications, we formulate a novel setting, "OCT-enhanced disease recognition from fundus images", that allows for the use of unpaired multi-modal data during the training phase, and relies on the widespread fundus photographs for testing. To benchmark this setting, we present the first large multi-modal multi-class dataset for eye disease diagnosis, MultiEYE, and propose an OCT-assisted Conceptual Distillation Approach (OCT-CoDA), which employs semantically rich concepts to extract disease-related knowledge from OCT images and leverages them into the fundus model. Specifically, we regard the image-concept relation as a link to distill useful knowledge from OCT teacher model to fundus student model, which considerably improves the diagnostic performance based on fundus images and formulates the cross-modal knowledge transfer into an explainable process. Through extensive experiments on the multi-disease classification task, our proposed OCT-CoDA demonstrates remarkable results and interpretability, showing great potential for clinical application. | 2023 | Towards Complex Scenarios: Building End-to-End Task-Oriented Dialogue System across Multiple Knowledge BasesabstractWith the success of the sequence-to-sequence model, end-to-end task-oriented dialogue systems (EToDs) have obtained remarkable progress. However, most existing EToDs are limited to single KB settings where dialogues can be supported by a single KB, which is still far from satisfying the requirements of some complex applications (multi-KBs setting). In this work, we first empirically show that the existing single-KB EToDs fail to work on multi-KB settings that require models to reason across various KBs. To solve this issue, we take the first step to consider the multi-KBs scenario in EToDs and introduce a KB-over-KB Heterogeneous Graph Attention Network (KoK-HAN) to facilitate model to reason over multiple KBs. The core module is a triple-connection graph interaction layer that can model different granularity levels of interaction information across different KBs (i.e., intra-KB connection, inter-KB connection and dialogue-KB connection). Experimental results confirm the superiority of our model for multiple KBs reasoning. Libo Qin 0001, Zhouyang Li, Qiying Yu, Lehan Wang, Wanxiang Che |

| 2023 | Age of Information Guaranteed Scheduling for Asynchronous Status Updates in Collaborative PerceptionabstractWe consider collaborative perception (CP) systems where a fusion center monitors various regions by multiple sources. The center has different age of information (AoI) constraints for different regions. Multi-view sensing data for a region generated by sources can be fused by the center for a reliable representation of the region. To ensure accurate perception, differences between generation time of asynchronous status updates for CP fusion should not exceed a certain threshold. An algorithm named scheduling for CP with asynchronous status updates (SCPA) is proposed to minimize the number of required channels and subject to AoI constraints with asynchronous status updates. SCPA first identifies a set of sources that can satisfy the constraints with minimum updating rates. It then chooses scheduling intervals and offsets for the sources such that the number of required channels is optimized. According to numerical results, the number of channels required by SCPA can reach only 12% more than a derived lower bound. Lehan Wang, Jingzhou Sun, Yuxuan Sun 0001, Sheng Zhou 0001, Zhisheng Niu |

| 2023 | Modularized Pre-Training for End-to-End Task-Oriented DialogueabstractPre-training forend-to-endtask-orienteddialoguesystems (EToDs) is a challenging task due to its unique knowledge base query (accuracy) need and lack of sufficient training data (fluency). In this paper, we try to mitigate the above challenges by introducing a modularized pre-training framework for EToDs, which achieves to effectively improve both accuracy and fluency of EToDs through a pre-training paradigm. The core insight is a modular design by decomposing EToDs into ageneration (fluency)module and aknowledge-retriever (accuracy)module, which allows us to optimize each module by pre-training these two sub-modules with different well-designed pre-training tasks, respectively. In addition, such a modularized paradigm enables us to make full use of large amounts of KB-free dialogue corpus for the pre-traininggenerationmodule, which can alleviate the insufficient training problem. Furthermore, we introduce a newconsistency-guideddata augmentation (CGDA) strategy to cope with the data scarcity problem to better pre-train theknowledge-retrievermodule. Finally, we fine-tune the pre-trainedgenerationmodule andknowledge-retrievermodule jointly. Experimental results on three datasets show that our model achieve superior performance in terms of both fluency and accuracy. To our knowledge, this is the first work to explore modularized pre-training methods for EToDs. Libo Qin 0001, Xiao Xu 0005, Lehan Wang, Yue Zhang 0004, Wanxiang Che |

| 2021 | Age-Optimal Scheduling for Heterogeneous Traffic With Timely Throughput ConstraintsabstractWe consider a base station supporting two types of traffics, i.e., status update traffic and timely throughput traffic. The goal is to improve the information freshness of status update traffic while satisfying timely throughput constraints. Age of Information (AoI) is adopted as a metric for information freshness. We first propose an age-aware policy that makes scheduling decisions based on the current value of AoI directly. Given timely throughput constraint, an upper bound of the weighted average AoI under this policy is provided. To evaluate policy performance, it is important to obtain the minimum weighted average AoI achievable given timely throughput constraint. A low complexity method is proposed to estimate a lower bound of this value. Furthermore, inspired by the estimation procedure, we design an age-oblivious policy that does not rely on the current AoI to make scheduling decisions. Surprisingly, simulation results show that the weighted average AoI of the age-oblivious policy is comparable to that of the age-aware policy, and both are close to the lower bound.
