| 2025 | Masked Scene Modeling: Narrowing the Gap Between Supervised and Self-Supervised Learning in 3D Scene UnderstandingabstractSelf-Supervised learning has transformed 2D computer vision by enabling models trained on large, unannotated datasets to provide versatile off-the-shelf features that perform similarly to models trained with labels. However, in 3D scene understanding, self-supervised methods are typically only used as a weight initialization step for task-specific fine-tuning, limiting their utility for general-purpose feature extraction. This paper addresses this shortcoming by proposing a robust evaluation protocol specifically designed to assess the quality of self-supervised features for 3D scene understanding. Our protocol uses multi-resolution feature sampling of hierarchical models to create rich point-level representations that capture the semantic capabilities of the model and, hence, are suitable for evaluation with linear probing and nearest-neighbor methods. Furthermore, we introduce the first self-supervised model that performs similarly to supervised models when only off-the-shelf features are used in a linear probing setup. In particular, our model is trained natively in 3D with a novel self-supervised approach based on a Masked Scene Modeling objective, which reconstructs deep features of masked patches in a bottom-up manner and is specifically tailored to hierarchical 3D models. Our experiments not only demonstrate that our method achieves competitive performance to supervised models, but also surpasses existing self-supervised approaches by a large margin. | 2025 | Vision-Based Human Awareness Estimation for Enhanced Safety and Efficiency of AMRs in Industrial WarehousesabstractEnsuring human safety is of paramount importance in warehouse environments that feature mixed traffic of human workers and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). Current approaches often treat humans as generic dynamic obstacles, leading to conservative AMR behaviors like slowing down or detouring, even when workers are fully aware and capable of safely sharing space. This paper presents a real-time vision-based method to estimate human awareness of an AMR using a single RGB camera. We integrate state-of-the-art 3D human pose lifting with head orientation estimation to ascertain a human’s position relative to the AMR and their viewing cone, thereby determining if the human is aware of the AMR. The entire pipeline is validated using synthetically generated data within NVIDIA Isaac Sim, a robust physics-accurate robotics simulation environment. Experimental results confirm that our system reliably detects human positions and their attention in real time, enabling AMRs to safely adapt their motion based on human awareness. This enhancement is crucial for improving both safety and operational efficiency in industrial and factory automation settings. | 2025 | Marching Neurons: Accurate Surface Extraction for Neural Implicit ShapesabstractAccurate surface geometry representation is crucial in 3D visual computing. Explicit representations, such as polygonal meshes, and implicit representations, like signed distance functions, each have distinct advantages, making efficient conversions between them increasingly important. Conventional surface extraction methods for implicit representations, such as the widely used Marching Cubes algorithm, rely on spatial decomposition and sampling, leading to inaccuracies due to fixed and limited resolution. We introduce a novel approach for analytically extracting surfaces from neural implicit functions. Our method operates natively in parallel and can navigate large neural architectures. By leveraging the fact that each neuron partitions the domain, we develop a depth-first traversal strategy to efficiently track the encoded surface. The resulting meshes faithfully capture the full geometric information from the network without ad-hoc spatial discretization, achieving unprecedented accuracy across diverse shapes and network architectures while maintaining competitive speed. | 2024 | Energy Efficiency Optimization and Preventive Maintenance of HVAC Systems Using Machine LearningabstractHVAC systems are characterized by rigid and complex internal behaviour that limits the options for efficiency optimization. KI4HVACs project aims to apply machine learning to improve office building HVAC operation and maintenance efficiency. Reinforcement learning is used for energy use optimization and supervised learning for preventive maintenance. The models are wrapped into an MPC based and a decision tree algorithm for preventive maintenance. The system uses the TRNSYS18 simulation environment that matches an actual office building with multiple zones. Aleksey Bratukhin, Christian Stippel, David Sengl, Markus Kobelrausch, Thilo Sauter |

| 2024 | Through-Wall Imaging Based On WiFi Channel State InformationabstractThis work presents a seminal approach for synthesizing images from WiFi Channel State Information (CSI) in through-wall scenarios. Leveraging the strengths of WiFi, such as cost-effectiveness, illumination invariance, and wall-penetrating capabilities, our approach enables visual monitoring of indoor environments beyond room boundaries and without the need for cameras. More generally, it improves the interpretability of WiFi CSI by unlocking the option to perform image-based downstream tasks, e.g., visual activity recognition. In order to achieve this crossmodal translation from WiFi CSI to images, we rely on a multimodal Variational Autoencoder (VAE) adapted to our problem specifics. We extensively evaluate our proposed methodology through an ablation study on architecture configuration and a quantitative/qualitative assessment of reconstructed images. Our results demonstrate the viability of our method and highlight its potential for practical applications. Julian Strohmayer, Rafael Sterzinger, Christian Stippel, Martin Kampel |

| 2023 | Forecasting Critical Overloads based on Heterogeneous Smart Grid SimulationabstractClimate change mitigation poses a great challenge for our society. The need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions facilitates the expansion of renewable energy sources and electromobility. This transition is an already ongoing process, and with the worldwide increasing energy consumption, we face the need for automatic control and monitoring of the future electrical grid. To ensure a calculable and stable Low Voltage grid we need reliable load forecasting in order to avoid critical overloads and potential financial losses. This paper presents a novel concept for forecasting critical overloads based on an LSTM recurrent neural network. Our algorithm was tested using a one-year simulation of a rural Low Voltage grid section containing a grid-friendly energy community. Our results show the successful detection of 29 overloads within 12 simulated weeks. We reach a recall of 100% and a precision of 85%. Furthermore, we proved the ability of our LSTM to forecast two weeks with an MAE of 12.41 kW for the month of July. When optimizing the weather forecast data, we can lower this to 6.89 kW.
