| 2024 | AutoDDL: Automatic Distributed Deep Learning With Near-Optimal Bandwidth CostabstractRecent advances in deep learning are driven by the growing scale of computation, data, and models. However, efficiently training large-scale models on distributed systems requires an intricate combination of data, operator, and pipeline parallelism, which exerts heavy burden on machine learning practitioners. To this end, we propose AutoDDL, a distributed training framework that automatically explores and exploits new parallelization schemes with near-optimal bandwidth cost. AutoDDL facilitates the description and implementation of different schemes by utilizing OneFlow'sSplit,Broadcast, andPartial Sum(SBP) abstraction. AutoDDL is equipped with an analytical performance model combined with a customized Coordinate Descent algorithm, which significantly reduces the scheme searching overhead. We conduct evaluations on Multi-Node-Single-GPU and Multi-Node-Multi-GPU machines using different models, including VGG and Transformer. Compared to the expert-optimized implementations, AutoDDL reduces the end-to-end training time by up to 31.1% and 10% for Transformer and up to 17.7% and 71.5% for VGG on the two parallel systems, respectively. | 2023 | SimplePIM: A Software Framework for Productive and Efficient Processing-in-MemoryabstractData movement between memory and processors is a major bottleneck in modern computing systems. The processing-in-memory (PIM) paradigm aims to alleviate this bottleneck by performing computation inside memory chips. Real PIM hardware (e.g., the UPMEM system) is now available and has demonstrated potential in many applications. However, programming such real PIM hardware remains a challenge for many programmers. This paper presents a new software framework, SimplePIM, to aid programming real PIM systems. The framework processes arrays of arbitrary elements on a PIM device by calling iterator functions from the host and provides primitives for communication among PIM cores and between PIM and the host system. We implement SimplePIM for the UPMEM PIM system and evaluate it on six major applications. Our results show that SimplePIM enables 66.5% to 83.1% reduction in lines of code in PIM programs. The resulting code leads to higher performance (between 10% and 37% speedup) than hand-optimized code in three applications and provides comparable performance in three others. | 2023 | Research on Cyber Attacks and Defensive Measures of Power Communication NetworkabstractWith the wide application of information and communication technologies, a great number of cyber vulnerabilities threaten the security and stability of the power system. Therefore, this article analyzed the intrusion paths, the invasion mechanisms, and the possible consequences of most potential attacks in power communication networks (PCNs); a method for classifying and evaluating defense measures considering security indexes is also proposed. First, the typical structure and hierarchy of PCNs are sorted out. Second, we study the potential cyber attacks that may occur against PCNs and classify them into hot-spot attacks and nonhot-spot attacks based on academic research and statistical analysis of historical cyber attacks. Then, the potential target devices, propagation paths, and possible consequences to PCNs are analyzed in detail for different cyber attacks. Third, a security index system to assess the resistibility, recognizability, and recoverability of different defense measures is proposed. Based on the capability of different measures against cyber attacks, the defensive measures are classified into resistibility enhancement measures, recognizability enhancement measures, and recoverability enhancement measures. Accordingly, the mechanisms of different defense measures are analyzed. After that, the effectiveness of each defense measure is evaluated based on the degree of correlation between the defense measure and the security indexes. | 2021 | Meta-Learning Reliable Priors in the Function SpaceabstractMeta-Learning promises to enable more data-efficient inference by harnessing previous experience from related learning tasks. While existing meta-learning methods help us to improve the accuracy of our predictions in face of data scarcity, they fail to supply reliable uncertainty estimates, often being grossly overconfident in their predictions. Addressing these shortcomings, we introduce a novel meta-learning framework, called F-PACOH, that treats meta-learned priors as stochastic processes and performs meta-level regularization directly in the function space. This allows us to directly steer the probabilistic predictions of the meta-learner towards high epistemic uncertainty in regions of insufficient meta-training data and, thus, obtain well-calibrated uncertainty estimates. Finally, we showcase how our approach can be integrated with sequential decision making, where reliable uncertainty quantification is imperative. In our benchmark study on meta-learning for Bayesian Optimization (BO), F-PACOH significantly outperforms all other meta-learners and standard baselines. Even in a challenging lifelong BO setting, where optimization tasks arrive one at a time and the meta-learner needs to build up informative prior knowledge incrementally, our proposed method demonstrates strong positive transfer.
